Cuidado Thursday, February 26, 2009: Mari has yet another bad day

Well, okay, she has, like, ONE good minute. Here we go:

Granny is still telling the story of Snow White. Here comes the evil queen to the dwarves’ house with the poisoned apple. Chomp, and Snow White falls into coma-like slumber.

Back at another fantasyland, Televisa, Amador is on the phone with Stef dishing about the upcoming baptism of Mari’s baby. JM is sure to be holding down the front row, Amador speculates.

Rocio and Vicente are in the church, thinking wedding thoughts. Out front, the crowd (mostly extras who have come for the free eats), including Ana Julia are gathering and Mari visits with everyone. Mari introduces Adriento Ana Julia. Who will be godfather? The padre says he’s not allowed to be, and Damien gets the honor. Cande says she’s going to be grandma, so somebody younger should be godmother. Mari says Rocio is the Tia, so she picks Ana Julia. We know she will rue the day.

Rocio says even though we weren’t invited, we’re here. Mari says you know I’m happy you’re here, just I didn’t want JM to come. Too late! We see him coming up the aisle. Mari goes gulp.

Stef asks Amador what’s up with Mari lately. Amador asks why haven’t you and your tia come to see the play? What a yawn! says Stef. Not the play, she hastens to add, but having to look at Mari for two hours straight, but hey, maybe she’ll come for a few laughs. Amador says it’s a drama. With Mari in it? says Stef. How can I keep a straight face?

It’s time for the baptism. JM is hovering by the front pews. The padre asks Mari and the pardrinos to come up to the font. Lots of people come up – Cande, Elsa, Olga , Adrien, Becky, I’m losing count. (This doesn’t mean the pews are empty, though – the place is packed with people Mari never greets or high-fives or anything.) Mari tells Rocio to come up too. JM walks up after her and stations himself behind Mari. He helps her hold the candle during the ceremony and she looks ticked.

At Casa Velarde Stef is having some orange juice while talking to Ceci who is about to leave. Stef hints that maybe there is something going on with Mari today then says she doesn’t know anything. She tells Ceci that the judge won’t like Ceci going to look for Mari. Ceci says he knows I go to visit her. She leaves and Martirio, who was standing gloomily by tells Stef she better do something or Mari will be moving in. Stef says she doesn’t know what to do.

The padre baptizes the baby “Juan Miguel”. JM doesn’t look surprised – did he ever hear the baby’s name before? Everyone at the altar makes the sign of the cross on the baby’s forehead, and then it’s time for Mari to do it. JM starts to do it and their hands bump, and Mari pulls back. Finally they both do it at once. JM gives the baby a tender kiss and then walks off to the church door, even though the ceremony isn’t over. He looks wistfully back, then leaves. Outside he stops and thinks about the baptism and has tears in his eyes.

The extras stream out of the church and outside Mari rants to the padre about JM’s having been here. The padre says you can’t hide the truth from the child. Mari says she doesn’t want JM ruining MiniJM’s childhood. The padre says now’s the time to tell her about his visit to the authorities. He found out that MiniJM is registered there, and that JM did it by bringing in his marriage certificate. Mari is horrified. The padre says the child’s name is now officially Juan Miguel San Roman Velarde. She says didn’t you tell them the baby was born at the hacienda? The padre says JM got there before I did, Mari says no way is the baby going to have San Ramon or Velarde in his name. Ana Julia listens.

Somehow Mari has three bruises on her arm, yesterday it was only one.

Stef tells the judge that Ceci’s gone to look for Mari and the baby. He’s bummed. Stef says when Ceci persuades Mari to come live with them, all her low-class friends will be hanging around too. She says that Ceci told her the judge has accepted Mari. He says no, I’m not as rough on Mari as I was, but that’s not the same thing as accepting her. Stef says Ceci says you’re almost to the point of going with her to see Mari. The judge pops out of his seat and says Basta!

Stef says you shouldn’t accept someone in this house who offends you. You should forbid Ceci to bring her here to live.

Mari snatches the baby out of Rocio’s arms and Rocio says why? Mari says it’s not you, it’s that your JM’s sister and can you believe he went to the authorities and registered himself as the father? Rocio says I know - I went as a witness. Mari asks where is JM? and thrusts the baby into Rocio’s arms and off she runs down the street in her little white dress and high heels to look for JM.

He’s at the office, seeing a patient out. Mari bursts in and tells him off for registering the child without her consent. He says it’s his child and will bear his name and she’s a Velarde and that’s that. She threatens to get a lawyer. He says you can change the Velarde part if you want, but not the San Ramon part. He says he’s ready to share responsibility for the baby, but Mari starts in on him, saying that child is all she has in the world and he wants to take it away. Are you that cruel? she asks him.

JM says let’s not fight. We have such a great love that it will not die. (If you thought that was purple prose, wait and see what’s next!) This love dwells in my bosom and you know it courses through your veins. It’s so powerful and yet here we are face to face, arguing, when we should be caressing one another, kissing one another. Isn’t that true? She looks down, he comes closer and …..

BESO!

He says let’s talk about our true feelings and think calmly and find the right solution. True, there are things that separate us, but can’t we can’t we forget all that? We have such a grand amor and we have to recognize that. It’s been with me from the first day and is only growing more intense all the time. Be my beloved wife again, my wife that I will never stop loving. The theme song kicks in. Mari studies him, but doesn’t say anything.

Onelia is visiting Isa. She is startled that their juice glasses don’t match – she must think she’s practically slumming. They have a plan they to get rid of Blanca apparently by working on her nerves. Isa wants to learn all about Blanca’s split personality problems.

Mari fiddles with her cuticles and JM proposes again. Mari flashes back to Blanca saying how fragile she (Blanca) is and how strong and brave Mari is. JM says let’s live and love together with our child. Mari flashes back to Blanca saying she’ll give up JM if Mari loves him. JM says come home to me. We’ll have Mayita and our son. Mari flashes back to Blanca saying that Mayita loves her (Blanca).

Mari says there’s another woman waiting in your house, or have you lost your memory too?

The judge says he has been gentler with Ceci because he’s always been in love with her because she’s so sweet and understanding. Stef simpy-smiles and says she’s sweet, but she’s stronger than you and me put together. The judge says you aren’t convincing me. The baby has created new feelings, new situations. Stef says you like being a grandfather! Pretty soon you’ll be all gaga over the baby. The judge says no way.

Onelia tells Isa the only problem is that Blanca would recognize her (Onelia). Isa says don’t worry, everything is completely planned out. She says she’s going to help Onelia put Blanca in jail or out into the street. She reminds Onelia not to forget Stef’s needs. Onelia says don’t worry, our plan is going to benefit her.

JM says I didn’t forget. There are ways to settle things without hurting anybody. (This I gotta hear - he must be one helluva shrink to bring that off without crushing the very crushable Blanca.) Mari says I’m not interested. Marry her and forget me, she says sadly. She goes to leave and he takes her arm. Let me go she says softly. Please. JM says for our child. Mari says no, I don’t want to see you ever again. JM lets go her arm – his thumb was right where the bruise was (she’s down to one bruise for this scene). Mari leaves.

JM returns to an empty living room. You’d think he’d be in weepy mode, but no. Like Omar, rejection brings out the optimist in him. She loves me! he thinks. She was ready to accept, but she was afraid. He grins. She loves me! I know she loves me!

Mayita heads up the stairs to the attic. Granny tells a true story that happened long ago she says about a girl who got polio and was paralyzed from the waist down. Granny gives a PSA about all babies needing vaccinations. She tells about disabled people who achieve great things, and this girl was one. She found she could swim and excelled at it and ended up swimming the channel. She wanted to enter a competition, but the judges said she couldn’t because she was disabled.

JM thoughtbubbles that Blanca is the only obstacle and she said she’d understand. Here comes Blanca trotting in. She’s all wound up and excited and says she has something to tell him. He says he has something to tell her too. Who’ll go first? she says. You go first! She happily sits on the couch and turns her face up to listen. JM hesitates.

JM says you look so happy, what happened? Blanca says she was so afraid about marrying him because of maybe Mari and him still loving each other, but she’d been to see Mari and now everything is okay.

Mari is in her bedroom and Ana Julia is asking her what’s wrong. AJ says she overheard about JM. Mari explains about her marriage and about how JM won’t leave her alone now. AJ says do you still love him? Mari says I don’t want to talk about it right now. AJ says when you’re ready, I’m here for you to unburden yourself whenever you want.

Blanca gushes about her visit to Mari. She tells JM how honest she was, how cute the baby was, how wonderful Mari was. She hopes that one day she’ll have that kind of confidence and JM will love her as he loved Mari. She tells him that Mari says she did not intend to return to him. Blanca is thrilled.

More PSA from Granny. The disabled girl gets to enter, she wins and the crowd goes wild. Moral: disabled people are capable of great things. Granny seems to have forgotten about Snow White, who was disabled by that apple, but maybe she’s just letting her sleep for now.

Cande comes in and tells Mari the guests are still there. Mari says she would be bad company. Cande guesses that she talked to JM and Mari says they fought. She asks to be left alone for now. Cande says she’ll explain to the guests – she leaves and Mari flops on her bed face-down.

Blanca says I didn’t want to be seen as the person who kept you away from Mari. She notices his serious expression and says Did you still have hopes? She forgets that question and says I wanted to know that even if I didn’t exist, you and Mari had no future. (I just noticed she’s not squeaking as usual.) JM says no reason to keep on about it.- it’s very clear. He smiles and says he’s glad to see her so happy.

She pops up and, swaying coquettishly like a child, says JM? I think we’ve never kissed. JM looks like uh-oh.

Avances: Onelia tells Rocio that Blanca is stepping out at night, all dolled up. Omar loses control and passionately kisses Ivette on the neck. She says she’s sure Mari can’t turn him on like that, and he comes to himself and shouts at her to leave. JM tells Rocio that Mari wants him to marry Blanca. Mari tells AJ that she still loves JM.

Comments:
Good Morning Maggie...how can anyone with a single hormone left resist Juan Miguel? Whew, purple prose and all, I would have been a goner at the first lean-in.

Glad to hear Blanca isn't squeaking quite as much. I hate that voice. There was character on Heridas de Amor (played by Ingrid Martz, another blonde) who got nicknamed "Squeaky" because of her high voice. I don't think any of us realize her actual name to this day.

Enjoyed your observation that Juan Miguel seems to be encouraged by rejection just like Omar. They do say testosterone gives confidence! Thanks for a great recap. Think I'll skip watching the tape....ultimos capitulos can't come too soon!

Hi, JudyB, we're only halfway through, unfortunately. Dull, despite JM. Marichuy has only three emotions/expressions: high dudgeon and blank stare, and occasionally smiling. I'm just settling on the opinion that she's just not that great an actress. Allison Llozz is much more compelling.

On the good side, however, I am enjoying MEPS! Hope it's a keeper.

I didn't watch this, so thanks for the recap, Maggie. I'm keeping track of the goings on sporadically.

Who is Ana Maria, or whatever her name is?

And will someone please explain how there is an evil alliance between Stef and Amador against Marichuy when Amador actually likes and needs Marichuy for his theater success? This just makes no sense.

Thank you Maggie for the wonderful recap. I needed subtitles and your notes to understand everything MC was shouting and mumbling last night. Will that girl ever take actual diction lessons?

Nina -- Ana Julia is the new make-up artist/personal theater attendant for MC (Olga's replacement). I also am bewildered about Steffie and Amador's friendship.

Jody :)

I knew it! Knew that the kiss between Juanmi and Mari would be shortlived. Grrr....

Who is Damien???

Didn't MC ask Ana Julia to be godmother, which I found odd since she just met this lady. Then she called Rocio up to be Madrina, isn't that godmother? Yes, that AJ is up to no good. She wants to be the star of the play and will probably try to harm Mari in some way so she can take over the role. Sumpin' ain't right there!

I don't get the Amador/Stef connection either. MC is his bread and butter now, the great actress!

Could Onelia show anymore of her breasts last night? What's up with that show of cleavage? How is Isa paying for her apartment? Does she have a job??

I, for one, cannot stand Blanca and the whole story. I hit mute as soon as Blanca starts that whiny voice. I also "click" when Stefi is on.

I find it so funny that these two dudes, JM and Omar, are "engaged" to ladies that they have not shared an intimate moment with, even a little smooch. Has anyone ever seen JM and Blanca kiss, Omar and MC? What about when JM was with Stefi (I wasn't watching then), did they ever lock lips? Weird!

That baby was adorable, wasn't he, when he was getting the oil poured over his forehead, he just giggled. What a doll.

Maggie, great recap of a hot episode. To quote the wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz, I'm melting, I'm melting. JM was on fire last night. Period.

The christening scene could not have been more perfect. The beautiful cooing baby locking his finger into JM's hair was priceless.

Could Onelia been any more distainful of Isa's apartment? She looked as though she was going to be attached by cockroaches at any moment. Of course if she had been distainful of Isa herself, that we could understand :)

Could Steffi be any more vile or transparent? Blech.

Speaking of witches, is Ana Julia a good witch or a bad witch? Her expression at viewing the Mari/Padre Anselmo exchange wasn't caring or sympathetic but calculating and analytical. Doesn't bode well. Diana in MA

I believe the Steffi/Amador /Isa connection was born out of wanting to separate JM and Mari permanently. When Steffi and Amador found out Mari was pregnant, they wanted to keep the news from JM. Further, they were going to kill and abduct the baby. If everything had worked according to plan (which it didn't thankfully), Amador could have his actress and Steffi could step in and be with JM.

Despite the fact their plans werre derailed, Amador did get his actress (at least for now). Actually, the baby helped his case as from day 1, he tried to instill fear in her that if JM found out about the baby, he would try to take him away.

And, in spite of everything, Steffi is still laboring under the delusion that she will have JM. Diana in MA

Diana, I definitely think AJ is going to be a bad witch. Something is not quite right with her character. What happened to Olga, I thought she was MC's assistant or is she maybe now the baby's nanny?

Hi JudyB! I’m glad you’re stopping by time to time.

Violet – Damien is actually Adrien. I keep goofing up on that name. I went back and fixed it – thanks for the heads-up. Also, I agree with you about Onelia’s décolletage. She was really showing her assets when she was visiting Isa.

NinaK – you and I have opposite views of the Maita/Allisson comparison. I think that Guapos was a fast-paced show, full of humor, and that Cuidado is slow-paced and, if it weren’t for Cande, pure drama. Allisson did a terrific job for a 16-year-old, but Maita is a phenomenal actress without whom this show would fall flat on its face, though there are many other good performers in it.

I was thinking about Mari’s whole baptism adventure and it occurs to me that if we behaved as she did, there would be a lot of tsk-tsking and eye rolling. She ignores the church full of extras, throws a fit in front of the guests, snatches the baby away from Rocio, runs off down the street, then completely blows off the party so that she can be moody in her room. Of course in this show everyone honors her because hey, she’s the protagonista.

Oh, okay, Maggie. Adrien. That's what I thought his name was, but since I am a newbie, I thought I was wrong and his name was really Damien! By the way, has Purdita become a full-fledged nun yet?

I thought it odd that Mari just picked the godparents on the spur of the moment. When I baptized my kids in the Catholic Church, the godparents had to go meet the priest beforehand and make sure they were good, practicing Catholics, and they even had to have a note from their parish priest stating that was the case. I guess times have changed!

I love Mayita. She is the best young actress on any show I've seen. I love her rapport with JM. So sweet.

Maggie: thanks for the recap. I could just imagine myself with a man who expressed his love the way that Juanmi did to Mari. So, of course she throws it back in his face and runs out of the room. What a dunce. By now some good manners should have rubbed off on her. I guess I'm ranting because I wanted to see more hugs and kisses.

Great recap Maggie. it's now official, I am only watching this show because of that beautiful baby and the fantastic recaps. Do you guys realize how many people have either stopped watching or watch periodically? Are these writers new? Most of my friends have given up on it already. It has gotten so weird even our obsession with JM and MC is not carrying it anymore. It is a shame, they have something great and are messing it up.

Thanks for the recap Maggie. I'll have to go and look at my DVR and watch JM talk to MC. At least they had uno beso.

Violet I think MC's selection of godparents probably reflects the poor writing in this show. Though I'm not Catholic being a godparent is still pretty serious.

Anon 1:31pm - I feel your pain regarding the show. I think the messing up occurred when they (let's say it together) extended to show. Unless the writers have a very good plan, extending the show can really mess it up. Consider FELS and even LFMB.

Well, it’s still the second-rated Spanish language show in the nation and it was wildly popular in Mexico, I read. They sure have the budget and the fine actors and the direction seems good. But the writers are asleep at the switch – there’s just not enough material here. It’s a pity, because they have so much they could work with, for instance creating backstories for the characters who just seem to exist floating in time with no histories to anchor them.

Maggie, you have really hit the nail on the head--it's the writing that's the real problem. Dull dull dull. I just can't muster much interest in these talking heads. Not even to practice Spanish.

I think the Spanish is much easier to understand on MEPS for some reason.

NinaK – I’m in these telenovelas for the Spanish lesson, but the main make or break for me is the acting. If the actors are good, I enjoy the show. The ones I’ve bailed on in the past I gave up on not due to the story lines, but due to the actors.

Maggie, thank you. I loved your recap. And I am in complete agreement about the actors. If I am attracted to them, I stick around even if what they are doing is st-o-o-o-pid. This show has suffered from many missed opportunities, such as the back stories you mentioned.

I wasn't sure about the Ana Julia/Rocío madrina thing. It looked as if MC hadn't given this momentous event any forethought and on the spur of the moment picked her best frenemy Ana Julia, then, once inside the church, she picked Rocío. Did I miss something here? Being the complete luddite that I am, I don't have recording equipment, so if I miss something, there's no going back. And youTube is too hard for me to watch, so I really rely on all you guys to fill in the blanks for me.

When it began, I thought the show was promising. But like everyone else, I got bored and tune in intermittantly.

At the beginning, I liked the mayita/Abuela Marianna scenes because they reflected Mayita's worries and escapes. Now that they are fairy tales and PSAs, I find them annoying as they break up what little momentum the script has.

There are so many opportunities for dramatic conflict (for example Omar and JM, Mari and both, Mari and Amador, Steffi and mari, Cecilia/Mari/Patricip/Steffi). But nothing seems to happen segment after segment.

Wasn't AnaJulia one of Milagro's competitors on GUAPOS? For awhile, she replaced Mili with the main galan --whose name I dont remember.
NJ Sue

Ana Julia is probably being set up to be similar to the Eve Harrington character in "All About Eve." Eve/AJ start off as naive women who completely adore Margo/MC and then things change.

I don't know if AJ was in Guapos (didn't watch it) but she was Karen in Fieras (with Edith Gonzalez).

AJ was Pilar in Guapos. I am interested to see how her character develops. I still faithfully watch every night, mostly to look at JM and Amador. I am hoping things will pick up soon.
Mauni in Wa

Thanks for the fabulous recap Maggie.

Re: the Amadork/Stef allianace - Amadork wants to keep Mari under his thumb, so he’s working with Estafa to make sure she doesn’t have anybody else to turn to, like JM, Omar, or Ceci. It’s typical abusive husband behavior.

Re: Omar and Mari kissing: they have, but it was more of a peck on the lips back at the hacienda, when he was still trying to talk her into marrying him. Not sure there has been much kissing since. I agree that it’s silly that both of these men are trying to marry women they have so little chemistry with, regardless of how much Omar thinks he loves Mari.

Re: the baby’s madrina – yes, it does mean godmother. It looks like Mari originally wanted Cande, but she decided to pass the baton when PA pointed out it should be young people (it is the job of the godparents to keep the Catholic upbringing if both parents should die and as Violet pointed out, it is a far more involved process than they depicted. PA didn’t even check if AJ was Catholic!). Elsa suggested aunt Rocio, but Mari said she wasn’t there (‘cause Mari didn’t invite her) so she picked AJ as a last-minute substitute (considering how much people agonize over picking godparents, this was just weird). Once in the church, Mari saw Rocio was indeed there and figured it was only logical to ask her to be the madrina, and AJ stepped down. In Adrian’s case, at least PA knows him to be a practicing Catholic and Mari has known him for years. She originally wanted PA, but he pointed out that a)he couldn't christen and be godfather and b)it should be someone younger.

Haven’t decided if AJ’s good or evil. Michelle Vieth has that effect on me – never know until well into her appearance which way she’ll go. Oh, and I’m pretty sure both AJ and Olga are assisting Mari these days. Olga handles clothes and AJ handles makeup.

Violet – Purita is still a novice. It takes a while to become a full-fledged nun and even longer for priests.

I do agree that Mari’s being a complete idiot. She’s actually picking Blanca’s happiness over her own kid’s (not to mention her own). Yes, it is possible to be a single parent and it is a far better choice that living with parents that hate each other, but this is not the case. JM and Mari could actually be happy together and provide stability to the kid. Besides, even if she decided to remain an actress, I suspect JM would be less prone to jealousy if he knew that Mari was always coming home to him. Just saying....

I think they writers should have made Omar the godfather. He has a strong connection to little JM and what jealousy there would be between JM and Omar, JM's rival is now his baby's godfather.

Violet

Thanks Margarita Chila. I am twice a godmother and it's a BIG deal. So I was surprised at how cavalier Mari was to have left this undecided until the last minute.

I remember Michelle Vieth as a Fiera turned repentant so I'm not sure either. She's acting genuinely caring and friendly. I don't get the backstabbing vibe from this performance, but time will tell.

And yes, my nuns went through two distinct phases before their investiture. The postulates were young and girlish and still getting used to the idea. They wore white habits. After a year of this, they entered the novitiate and wore black but without the elaborate wimple of the full-fledged nuns, their habits were slightly shorter, above the ankle. And then, if they could stick it out for the full term, they became lifers and wore the whole nine yards. I sometimes went over to the convent after school to help clean the altar and I saw them without their habits on. What a shock! I can't believe I'm saying all this, but it was a time when girls wore white gloves to church. I got mine at the Woolworth's.

Are the pretty pastel colored habits common in Mexico? I've seen them in several telenovelas?
