LQNPA 5/30/12 # 111: While the Cat’s Away, Poor Goose is Cooked!
La Que No Podía Amar Capitulo 111, 5/30/12
While the Cat’s Away, Poor Goose is Cooked!
Rogelio and Ana Paula are in Tuxtla, making preparations and tests for Rogelio’s spinal operation - if they can manage to get a loan or insurance coverage for it, that is. Cynthia and Gustavo have been left in charge of the hacienda, and Gustavo is putting his foot down about Cynthia staying there to take responsibility even though she desperately wanted to run off to Tuxtla to help with Mercedes’ wedding instead. Goose is not in a good mood these days - his ditzy, irresponsible wife is becoming too big a handful. María has found out the true nature of Cynthia’s relationship with Efraín, but Cynthia managed to convince her to guard the secret for now. Efraín has been very aggressive toward Cynthia, but she convinced him that they can’t just run away like he’s insisting because she’s not leaving her inheritance behind. Poor Margarito is forbidden by uppity Tía to play with the farm hands anymore since he is now the patroncito. Ana Paula finds out directly from Vainessa’s mother, that she (Elsa) in fact caused her father’s death by denying him his heart pills when he had his attack. Later, Vainy denied knowing that she had any idea what her mother did. Two-faced Vainy is playing the repentant sister claiming that learning what her mother did has opened her eyes. She is attempting to get on Ana Paula’s good side, offering to take Ana Paula to visit her fathers ashes, and even offering to loan the money Rogelio needs for his operation and for the hacienda.
Refrito: Cynthia’s grade school speech to the ganaderos and Ana Paula arguing with Vainy about a loan to Rogelio. Rogelio returns to the table, and Vainy pushes really hard with the loan idea and sucking up to AP. Rogelio observes with Vainessa and Ana Paula talking like that - it looks like you two are great friends.
Nuevo: At the restaurant table Vainy is still trying to score points by offering to loan Ana Paula and Rogelio the money they need to borrow. It looks like über-naive AP has been at least partially suckered by Vain’s hoodwink-my-sister campaign, thinking that Vainy is willing to work together to reconcile as was their father’s dying wish. Vainy even offers to take AP to visit her, um, their father’s remains. Rogelio, however, appears quite skeptical. He apparently does not trust Vainy on this point, and neither does Viewerville. We know she has already sworn to make Rogelio and AP miserable or die trying, and if anyone is motivated by venganza (revenge), Vainy is.
Back at the hacienda, Tía, who wouldn’t let Margaro pay fútbol with the ranch hands, is making a poor substitute, and then complaining about her weak heart. Fortunately Miguel (who, as Tío, qualifies as an acceptable playmate) shows up to take over and starts showing off soccer moves every young man aspires to master. Margaro comments to Miguel that his aunt is a little odd. Miguel concurs.
Vocabulario:
trato - deal, dealings, treatment, personal relationship, interaction
convivencia - living together, coexistence
agotado - exhausted, worn-out
¡no te pases de lista conmigo! - don’t try to outsmart/pull a fast one on me! [Efraín to Cynthia in ep #110]
pasarse de listo - be too clever for one’s own good or to try to pull a fast one
tomar a la ligera - to take lightly/carelessly/without due care
tomar en serio - to take seriously
en juego - in play; at stake
hablar de dientes para afuera - to pay lip service
de dientes para afuera - insincerely
echar(le) ganas - to make an effort
todo lo contrario - quite the opposite/reverse
a partir de manaña - from tomorrow on (or starting tomorrow)
pueblo chico, inferno grande - the smaller the town, the bigger the scandal. Apparently this was also the name of a Mexican telenovela broadcast in 1997 and staring Juan Soler - translated more literally as “Little Town, Big Hell”
cuidarse - to take care of yourself. Commonly used in telenovelas as a euphemism for using birth control.
Here was a good one that I understood exactly what Goose meant in context, but it took me a while to figure out how to express it accurately and naturally in English:
Tú no terminas de entender que esto es algo que no puedas tomar a la ligera.
You aren’t coming to understand that this is something that you can’t take lightly.
Labels: no-podia
"Goose’s face is a portrait of disappointed frustration."
What a great line to sum up poor Guscake's life right now. It really sucks to be Gus.
Ooooh, BTW, I know it was a typo type error:
"Goose tells Mercedes he’s dying to have a niece or nephew! It’s Mercedes fondest hope to have a child by Esteban."
But wow, I think that would be the end of the Mersnotty- Ernesto wedding plans! LOL!
Vanesa, hmmm. I do wonder how they will resolve her place in this morality tale.
Does anyone know if that was Ana Brenda Contreras singing? It appeared she was lip syncing, but I assumed that was because of sound/recording issues.
Sara, yes, it was Ana Brenda singing.
It was her second song for this novela
Alegria
All these novelas are morality tales, it is one of the things that fascinates me about them. Although sometimes the morality is a little weird.
For this line:
"You aren’t coming to understand that this is something that you can’t take lightly."
I would say "You don't understand..." or even "You don't realize..." even though he didn't say "No te das cuenta..." The way it's written is awkward English.
Rogelio is beginning to grow on me and I swore at the start of this novela I would never like the douchebag.
There is one other name error: AP and Vain's father was Federico, not Fernando.
With regard to Goosetavo and contraception: I'm predicting Sinthia will let Efrain knock her up and try to pass the baby off as a gosling. She won't like being pregnant, either. She'll be more entitled and lazy than ever.
That her father raised her to be so entitled really puzzles me. Was that specifically so she would eventually treat Maria like basura? Which still makes very little sense. I also doubt that he treated his wife like a queen.
Learned helplessness is just as pathetic as affected helplessness. The Goose is cooked on this and I hope he rats her out to Rogelio. Even Vainessa learned to run a business, after all.
I hope they show Margarito looking at the pavos reales; I love those birds. I'll bet he never even saw pictures of them before this.
While Vainessa might deserve the taunts, Tia MentiRosa really doesn't see where any line is drawn.
@ Alegria what do you mean that was the second song Ana sang in the novela? What was the first one?
Pink Angel
Alegria
Better video of the same song here and an answer from Nora Salinas (no relation I'm sure).
Does anyone else think that Ana Brenda looks like a younger version of Elizabeth Alvarez?
Vanessa's lips - what the hell! Where did those things come from?
No, UA, I don't think Ana Brenda looks like a young Elizabeth Álvarez. Sorry.
So goes Hilda and so goes the romance with Bruno.
We were just talking about young Elizabeth on the Abismo thread. Lupe from UFCS looks like a young Elizabeth to me.
Hi Sue455: The sentence in Spanish uses "Tú no terminas de (en?) entender..", "terminar en entender" would be translated as "to end up (or wind up) understanding". It's the negative form that is awkward in English, because we would never say "You don't end up understanding" or "You aren't ending up understanding" in English. That's why I changed it to "You aren't coming to understand". Of course, the more natural modern English thing to say would be something like - "You don't get that this isn't something you can just blow off." Still awkward.
Who knows why Iván Montero raised Cynthia to be a lazy queen. It seems like he didn't otherwise treat her well at all - neglected, unappreciated, under-educated. That doesn't seem consistent with spoiled princesa. Cynthia's spoiled lazy princesa persona seems to be more related to her personally compensating for having been horribly neglected rather than anyone telling her she deserved to be a Montero queen.
I had to make a cheat sheet reference Ernesto and Esteban! Too many men with "E" names. At least I can separate Efrain.
It was nice that Rogelio, Ana Paula and Margarito got away from the hacienda for a while. I can see how Mexico City would be amazing for them, I bet they never saw so many people together in one place.
Count me in as not feeling sorry for Gustavo as he realizes what a horrible person Cinthia is. That's why you get for marrying on a whim to be close to your married ex.
I saw Ana Brenda in the musical play "Aladino" a few years ago, she played the Jazmin role for the tour on the states so that's the part I saw her in, although I think she played a different role during the shows in Mexico City. I posted this video of her singing during Teresa but some might not have seen it then, she has a nice voice.

If my dictionary fails (and it includes quite a few "adverbial phrases" as it calls them), I go search in the Word Reference Forum forum.wordreference.com . Actually, just doing a Google search on a phrase often brings up the links for the phrase in that forum. There are lots of discussions of idiomatic phrases, and many of them are specifically Mexican.
The dictionary I use the most is the Word Magic Spanish-English Reference Dictionary app on my iPad. It covers a huge number of cases and phrases, and it's only when a phrase is elaborate that I end up searching with Google.
Jarocha
Jarocha
a poco - (you) don't say, really?, no kidding! Example from last night: A poco estás celoso? - Don't tell me you are jealous? <- good translation in the captions.
a lo mejor - maybe, perhaps, probably, like as not, but it also indicates the speaker is hoping for this better outcome. Example from Consuelo last night: a lo mejor a usted le hace más caso que a mí - maybe he'll pay more attention to you than me. <- also the caption translation. Note that in this case Consuelo is hoping that Ulises will pay more attention to Mercedes. FWIW this phrase always uses the indicative, even though it is an expression of chance/hope.
Speaking of Vainy's lips, I was getting quite annoyed when she kept placing her hand over her mouth during her scene with Cinthia. Maybe they were swelled from injections or something I don't know. But it was irritating to say the least.
So all heck will break loose at the church wedding announcement. I wonder who's holding the gun per the previews.
UA, thanks for posting those videos. The one from FELS was so much fun--it was wonderful to see Jorge at the end where he was dancing around and flirting. Rohell is so intense and gloomy that it's nice to see a happy, sparkling Jorge shakin' his groove thang.
To me, Ana Brenda has a longer face than Elizabeth Alvarez, with a more square jawline. Elizabeth's face seems more heart shaped and her eyes are tilted up at the corners. Some photos look more similar than others.
Seeing Patricia Reyes Spindola dancing in her feather boa and pink tennies cheered up my day.
La Paloma
As to the different times on the schedule--Univision is announcing a futbol match this evening, beginning at 8:50. So, no LQNPA--but I'll be at the ready just in case they are wrong (as they sometimes are).
Since someone else brought up Elizabeth Alvarez--I saw her on El Gordo and La Flaca with Diego Olivera and the other galan promoting Amorcito Corazon (banished to the afternoon...when only nannies are watching...BTW, is there a snarky term or abbreviation that everyone recognizes to mean being offended?)
In Amorcito, she is still single and ulucky in love. Gordo asked Elizabeth how Jorge felt about the mouth open kisses (and something about the tongues…in jest) with Diego Olivera. They both declared that they were very professional about it, but wanted it to seem they were real and the characters really cared about each other.
Funny, no one asked Elizabeth how *she* felt about Jorge and Ana Brenda’s kisses.
So Gustavito is finally abriendo los ojos. He also doesn't hold back from calling Cin on her resistance to any work--at all. Besides flinging hair and flouncing out, I do catch her ruffling her hair. Does this mean she's going the same way Elsa La Vaca went? We know Vainessa isn't crazy--her hair is straight and she never touches it.
Anita
Every one in a while Vainy will touch that lanky bit that doesn't seem to stay with the rest of the 'do. Sin's hair is as wild and insane as she is becoming. I hadn't thought of it/noticed. Thanks for giving me a giggle. :)
Audrey- would you be willing to e-mail me? I want to pick your brain about vocab.
I haven't decided whether Vainessa is irredeemable or not. I do know that the Tia definitely is.
Hilda dodged a cannon ball IMHO.
I loved your description of "Cynthia’s grade school speech to the ganaderos." As for Cynthia, I'm almost positive that she will become pregnant and may not even know who the father is.
BTW, I don't think there will be any episode of LQNPA shown tonight (Thursday). The avances talked about "el viernes," and according to today's Washington Post, there's a futbol match on Univision starting at 8:50 EDT.
Audrey, great recap. I wish I didn't ff through the end when Ana Brenda sang. If I knew it were her, I would have watched it. I'm too lazy to undo my recording setup to go back and watch.
The quick transformation of AP loving Rog has me dizzy. It makes no sense to me how she all of a sudden has changed gears and is in love with him and wants to marry in the church.
Is Amorcito relegated to daytime because of its production cost vs. the prime time ones? I don't see a mansion in it.
BTW, I agree with you about Ana Paula's sudden transformation re Rogelio. It just seems too extreme. Then again, this is a telenovela! :-)
I don't think that made sense :-/
UA I wish I understood the decision to put Amorcito on in the afternoon. It strikes me as a good show. IMHO Univision is not doing Refugio any favors having it on for two hours. I don't think it helped UFCS either. Why not have four TNs in the line up? Disclaimer: I've caught bits and pieces of Refugio and it still hasn't grabbed me. The first episode of Amorcito interested me enough to want to watch it and I hope there are enough people here at Caray that we might have at least a weekly discussion post similar to the telemumdo ones.
Yep, it looks like no show tonight, so Kat will have a well deserved break.
But remember - she fell in love with Goostavito in 24 hours and knew he was her "true love", so I guess when the girl makes up her mind, she's all in!
I don't know how much of this time frame was messed up by JS' illness or what was left as written. This seems to be about the right time frame from the night he left Del Fuerte for the estudios the first time to a full reconciliation.
Since they had to sort of "do it" around Jorge's convalesence--AP's pregnancy, wishy-washiness, snake bite, miscarriage, etc.--the period where she joined Rogelio to be at the hospital with him had to be shortened. They would have had plenty of time for Rogelio to woo her again.
I'd love to hear some of the behind the scenes chatter on how they did re-write those episodes.
Anita
Anon, I'd love to hear an explanation for those bare-midriff outfits. They made no sense on Ximena in FELS because Gabriela was the type who would have used her riding crop on any daughter who would dress that way, but at least those looked nice on her. Sinthia's just look ridiculous.
---
I don't mean this to sound ugly to Ms. Gonzalez but she was so, so, so mis-cast/mis-costumed for this. The further we go into the story the more ridiculous she seems to me. She is too old for this role.
I agree with anon 6:30, while it does seem sudden for Cupcake to fall for Rohell (especially after he's been SUCH a douche) I think it's been brewing in her for a long, long time. He was starting to win her over before Bruno planted Goose's things in his desk, and later on he was really working on her too, and I think it was working. She just felt conflicted because of the baby-daddy thing, etc. But when finally things all fall into place for her, she jumps in with both feet. (Though I still would have preferred for it to take a little longer for her to be wooed by the old turd.) But still! That's what beanies are for! LOL.
The youtube channel of Univision seems to have a handful of LQNPA which is a shame because they are in excellent quality.
Well, we're going without our fix tonight! Fútbol and no LQNPA - boo hoo!
And thanks for the heads-up about tonight...looks like I get a night off...whatever will I do with myself?
I would like to propose some kind of contest for homemade chokers a la Cinthia...they have to be wide, they have to be too loose to fit the neck of the model, and they have to have something dangling from them. Certainly someone out there is talented enough to come up with something even more horrific than the costume department!
I really don't know, I don't have a vast mental file of Televisa actresses. I just can't put my finger on what keeps me from buying into Susana Gonzalez as Sin.
I suspect I am the only one with this opinion.
OOO!! A Contest!
...they have to be wide, they have to be too loose to fit the neck of the model, and they have to have something dangling from them.
She's got one choker...I refer to it mentally as "The Vineyard." It's green and I swear it's got grapes dangling off it.
Don't forget if you decide to enter the contest: The dangly stuff has to be applied in the most haphazard way possible.
Nightmare on Hell-Fuerte for Goose - good one Jardinera LOL!
Sara - I complained about Susana Gonzales being miscast for the part a while ago (too obviously old, too skinny, and too intelligent looking), although I admit that she's doing an amazing job of it lately.
I wanted an actress that actually looked more slothful and baby-face spoiled. I hadn't been able to "cast" one myself either! Maybe Marlene Favela - she has a perpetual baby face. Jessica Coch (32) could pull it off. She even dated José Ron for a while LOL! And she does a pretty good job of looking evilly dumb.
But they're all young people compared to me!
*the petulant daughter of privilege *the immature adolescent (clothing) *the yearning-for-love and/or sex spinster(Effer affair)
*the insecure, needy child
*the part-time prisoner of the hacienda
*all underlaid with incipient mental issues or illness
La Paloma
I remember the comments "too old, too skinny and too intelligent looking." I just never can remember who says what (see my opening statement.)
I've never seen either of those actresses act...but their faces seem right.
Adriana Fonesca crossed my mind, too.
An issue, though is the fact that I do think we are watching Sin descend into if not madness, something resembling it and I would think it's hard to cast for someone who starts as petulant and spoiled but becomes hard and borderline nuts. If you cast for the former, it may not look right for the latter.
Gawd I'm rambling.
I barely remember Ximena's costuming in FELS (I only watched the DVD.) I do remember the few times I caught it as it was airing, I thought Susana Zabaleta's character looked ridiculous, too. Wasn't she another one with a bared midriff?
I don't think anyone has expressed a liking to Vanessa. I could be wrong.
Someone younger with the typical spoiled brat of privilege would be Altair Jarabo, who is the same age as Ana Brenda. However, that would mean that Rogelio would have to be cast with someone the same age as Jose Ron. I don't see that working well.
When I stopped watching, Cupcake was wearing ridiculous dresses. I'm glad that they've got her wearing jeans and simple tops now. She looks fabulous. I wish I looked as good in something so simple.
Anita: I think you are right about the timing and Ana switching gears so suddenly. I'm sure Jorge Salinas' illness threw some things off and they just wanted to get back on track ASAP.
As I conceded earlier, I'm sure it was very difficult to cast for this role as the character changes so much over the run of the show.
Definitely, as the Cynthia character unfolds (and unravels), Susana Gonzalez is doing an amazing job. I'm very tired of her costuming, but I'm loving her acting. She is really bringing this tortured character alive!
I think Susana Gonzalez is great but yes, sometimes she looks a little too old for this part. But yet, her age fits well with Jorge Salinas's Rogelio, and if they were to cast a much younger actress for her, I agree with whomever said they'd probably have to go with someone younger for Rogelio, and that would NOT suit me at all! LOL. But anyway, I'm just going with the flow with Sin. She's wonderful at acting snobby and freaky and I'm enjoying her performance.
On the other hand, they didn't want to cast anyone too glamorous (Fedora [Jessica Mass] in Corazon Apasionado--who also bares her bellybutton) or too cute (Matilde [Grettell Valdez] from CME & now in Amorcito Corazon). It had to be someone who could remind viewers that she grew up a bit of a neglected tomboy, perhaps yearning to be really feminine, but with only her depressed mother and Maria for role models.
I think the way LaPaloma described the Sinthia character is perfect and it would be hard to play someone so multi-dimensional, so I have to hand it to SG for making her seem that real. At least she wears boots and not 5" platform spikes to go riding!
Anita
And since Anita mentioned it: Amorcito Corazon is a cute show.
I think we can agree that Rogelio is meant to be about 37 with Sinthia being 33; Ana Paula is probably meant to be 23 or 4.
Obviously the producer felt that Jorge Salinas was the best actor to play Rogelio and everything followed from there. The only actor I can think of who is 37 right now would have been Sebastian Rulli (based on his performance in Teresa).
