La Que No Podia Amar Lunes 6/25/12 Capitulo 128: Some Deer in the Headlights

That which has passed

Squire Miguel foolishly tells Sir Gustavo about Lord Rogelio's revenge; he hastens to the manor for the confrontation.  Her Ladyship follows, but is intercepted by Lady Chatterley.  As the violins give us the sound of flying Furies, Lord Rogelio gloats over his revenge over Sir Gustavo because Lady Ana Paula loves him instead of his younger rival. Sir Gustavo repeats that he was there to be sure that Her Ladyship would not be hurt.

That which we now see

Outside:   The Furies continue to fly as Lady Chatterley proves she is not one in her continued fight with Lady Ana Paula, who gets away from her and runs inside. When she turns around and sees Squire Miguel and Lord Esteban approaching, she throws a rock at them shouting “Get away from my house!” before following Her Ladyship. Considering that Lord Esteban is her husband's best friend and colleague, this is more than a little foolish. The two men look at each other and Lord Esteban shrugs.

Study:   As the confrontation continues Lady Ana Paula enters to end it before anyone does anything fatal. Lady Chatterley follows and maintains her shrewish demeanor.

Gustavo:    I've been trying to make you understand what's been happening since I came to your home but no! Your pride and bitterness will not let you see anything –
Ana Paula:    Gustavo, ya, please calm down.
Rogelio:    You are here to defend Paula because you still love her. (Sinthia enters during that statement)
Sinthia (as the Furies crash-land and advance on them):    I had to hear that, Rogelio. How is it possible that you are defending this –
Gustavo:    I was telling your brother to his face what a disgrace he is.
Sinthia:    What happened?
Rogelio:    He knows very well. But don't worry. (goes to her side) All is the same between you and me, Sinthia. I can't let him hurt Paula out of revenge.
Sinthia:    What revenge? I want to know. Rogelio, why did you say to Gustavo that he still loves Paula?
Ana Paula:    Ya, please, everyone calm down. (Behind her Rogelio makes a gesture of frustration with all this nonsense; she barely sees this as she glances back before facing Sinthia) Sinthia, you heard what Gustavo said. Please don't interfere in this. [meter]
Sinthia:    I will because I want to know what he said to Gustavo and what he said in front of my brother. You would do the same.
Ana Paula:    I said nothing.
Sinthia (continuing to shout):    You did! Don't pretend you didn't. What do you want? Do you want to get back together with him? Do you want to return to him? (tries to grab her hand) Now that my brother has thrown you away, what do you want? To set him against Rogelio to kill him? What do you want?
Gustavo (grabbing Sinthia's arm):  This is not going to end. Let's go, Sinthia. (she breaks free, but he turns her toward the door) Let's go. (they exit)
Rogelio:    Once you're out of here you come back to look for Gustavo again.

He looks at her with a smug smile that does not seem genuine.

Outside Montero Manor:   Squire Miguel turns to enter the manor, but Lord Esteban stops him just before Sir Gustavo and Lady Chatterley exit. Upon hearing that his sister is in the study, Squire Miguel goes inside. Lord Esteban is then told by Lady Chatterley to leave them alone.

Study:   Her Ladyship faces a new accusation that she is pursuing Sir Gustavo and she tells His Lordship one more time that she loves him. However, he persists and she tells him that all her love could end up in the trash. Squire Miguel comes to his sister's defense and Lord Rogelio tells him to go to hell. Squire Miguel tells him to do whatever he wants to him and departs with his sister. As they exit His Lordship looks as though he could barely endure more.

Ana Paula:   You don't have the right to say this to me.
Rogelio: This morning I put you out of the manor and you come running back to look for this jerk. So much for you saying you love me.
Ana Paula:    That is not how this is, Rogelio.
Rogelio:    I will not permit you to interfere with my sister's marriage, least of all now that she is pregnant.
Ana Paula (starting to cry):    I don't want to do that! First because I am incapable of breaking up a marriage and second because despite everything I love you.
Rogelio:    This jerk is still in love with you.
Ana Paula:    Rogelio, please stop saying that he would leave Sinthia and her baby.
Rogelio:    Are you saying I should trust him, or what's with you?
Ana Paula:    Can't you see that you can trust me? What are you saying? Thanks to your revenge you will be in pain because all the love I felt for you is now in the trash. (Miguel enters)
Miguel:    What you are doing to my sister isn't fair.
Rogelio:    Let's not stand on ceremony. What you have to say you can discuss with her.
Ana Paula:    Miguel, let's go. It isn't worth it to talk to someone who isn't responding to words.
Miguel (looking directly at Rogelio):   You are a disgrace, a wretch, and you will pay for everything you've done.
Rogelio:    Go to hell!
Miguel:    You want to inflict pain on me, do it. (they exit)

Alone, His Lordship looks relieved at the end of the confrontation but ill at ease at its meaning.

Lady Chatterley's Bedchamber:  Dark music underscores a confrontation that has been waiting too long.

Sinthia:    Then what, Gustavo?
Gustavo:    Here we're going to be able to talk uninterrupted. Calm down.
Sinthia:    Well, then tell me the truth. Paula sought you out, don't deny that! Why? To get back together with you?
Gustavo:    Of course not! And if you argue with your brother about what he's done to Ana, it's not the act of a man.
Sinthia:    No? What did he do?
Gustavo:    His infatuation was a deception. It was just revenge for what happened with us before.
Sinthia (with a bratty look):    That is the least this bitch deserves.
Gustavo:    No, Sinthia. Ana doesn't deserve this. The one who came here is me and the one who confronted him from the first was me.
Sinthia:    But it's that she –
Gustavo:    You don't understand me. I have the greatest share of the guilt for everything that's happened. I was indignant that your brother took it out on her and not me.
Sinthia:    How can you keep defending her? In truth, you are the fiancé she wronged.

She knows not all the facts but is not likely to care about them.

Kitchen:   Maria slices cactus while talking to Sir Hugo, who tells her what he saw and heard when Her Ladyship and Squire Miguel departed. He departs to his work, disturbed by all this as Knave Skelator enters. Maria tells him what happened and asks him to help. He has a sick expression of perceived advantage and exits wordlessly. She looks uneasy at this exchange. This does not bode well.

Lady Chatterley's Bedchamber:   We have more of her insecurity.

Sinthia:    Can I trust that you are in love with me?
Gustavo:    We made a deal about that and you know it. I will be married to you for at least a year.
Sinthia:    Is the fact that we're having a baby not changing your mind?
Gustavo:    You know very well that we're not in the best position to start a family.
Sinthia:    Well, there is no going back. We are going to be parents.
Gustavo:    Yes, I know. But after our baby is born we'll see how things are between the two of us. For now I am at your side as your husband and you can be sure I won't look to be with Ana. Out of respect for you and our child.

She sheds her usual crocodile tears. She still does not believe him.

Ulisses' Shop:   Our least-favored couple fight again about his non-relationship with Lady Chio. Ulisses simply wants this all to end. [As do all of us.]

Inn, Shared Quarters:   Knave Skelator arrives and speaks alone with her. He tells her that he and Vainessa will continue to do business with Lord Rogelio. She pleads with him to help as she can ill tolerate living in a pigsty [pocilga] and how can her niece fall so low from having a wealthy husband to having to look for work that will not pay for the same manner of accomodation. This woman has no shame and it appears that Skelator is less than willing to assist as he looks about the room and kicks aside Master Margaro's cot. She goes on about how Vainessa will attempt to recapture His Lordship and begs Skelator to tell her of the happenings at the manor. He departs without replying or even saying farewell, displaying that he cares not a whit.

Night.

Study:   Sir Hugo hands over some documents and reports to Lord Rogelio that he had conveyed Her Ladyship, Master Magaro, and Tia MentiRosa to the house designated for them but that Her Ladyship did not want it. His Lordship flies into a rage, lashing the desk with his riding crop, shouting about the safety of a woman and child alone and demanding that Sir Hugo return to the town and find out where they had gone. Sir Hugo, patient as ever, assents and exits.

Inn, Shared Quarters:   Lady Ana Paula tells Tia MentiRosa that she considers reconciliation impossible and that they are not to go back to the manor. Furthermore, that they now must both find work. Tia MentiRosa is horrified at the prospect, claiming her illness. Lady Ana Paula simply informs her that while she is ill she is not incapacitated and they will have to find her work that does not involve physical labor. Tia MentiRosa is horrified that her niece will accept no assistance from her estranged Lord, but to Her Ladyship this is about dignity.

La Fonda:   Some foolishness with Ulisses and Macaria communicating through Maid Consuelo, but the worst is that Macaria now knows that the Monteros are separated because she had seen Her Ladyship at the inn and because La Fonda prepares the meals for it.

Inn, Shared Quarters:  Tia MentiRosa plays the invalid again, asking who will look after Master Margaro. Lady Ana Paula tells her that something will be worked out. He will be in school most of the day, but afterward he might go to Squire Miguel's workshop. There will be no escape from toil for Tia MentiRosa.

Study:   Maria enquires as to what actually happened.

Rogelio:    That imbecile Hugo went to find out where Paula now lives. I'm sure it's at Lola's inn.
Maria:    God willing she hasn't left the town. Because I was told she saw you and you fought again.
Rogelio:    Yes because she was sure I would harm that slug, Gustavo. [babosa]
Maria (sighing):    Ay, why? Now what happened?
Rogelio:    Nothing. The fool tried to play the hero. And I told him it was for revenge on them.
Maria:    Vengeance? (sits down) Why did you say that?
Rogelio:    He came to defend her because he still wants her. Because she is my wife by her own free will and loves me and now she will hate me for what I said to him. (Sinthia barges in without knocking)
Sinthia:   Rogelio, we have to talk.
Rogelio:    I don't want to talk to you.
Sinthia:    But I want to. (leaning over the desk) You are an imbecile. You are trying to break up my marriage.
Rogelio:    What are you talking about?
Sinthia:    What did you think you were doing when you threw Paula out of here?
Rogelio:    The right thing.
Sinthia (sarcastically):    Yes. You gave her back her freedom to come running back to the arms of my husband. Don't you know that?
Rogelio:    Paula doesn't love Gustavo now.
Sinthia:    Are you sure?
Rogelio:    Yes. She has demonstrated such.
Sinthia:    No. You don't know what she's done.
Rogelio:    Stop bothering me with foolishness. What really happened? You know what's wrong with you? You don't feel woman enough to hold onto your husband.
Maria (shocked):    Rogelio!
Rogelio:    It's the truth.
Sinthia:    How can you say this?
Rogelio:    How else does this look? Please your husband and stop bothering me.  [complacer]
Sinthia:    You are insufferable, Rogelio but remember that if I lose my husband it will be because he went back to the woman you love! And then you will feel the same as I do. (exits. Maria starts after her)
Rogelio:    Maria, leave her alone. (Maria stops) Leave her because it bothers me to fight with you.
Maria:    Rogelio, I can't stand watching you be so cruel to the people you supposedly love. Paula, Sinthia. Where will you end up? (exits, closing the door. Hugo enters from the outside)
Hugo:    Boss, Ulisses called. He says your wife is at Lola's inn. Do you wish me to find her?
Rogelio:    Get out. Get out. (Hugo complies; Rogelio takes a deep breath)

Inn, Shared Quarters:   Margarito is already abed -- though no one is aware he is still awake -- as Lady Ana Paula bids goodnight to her brother and his future bride, whom she will see at the clinic when she has time off from her paid work. They depart. Once the door closes Tia MentiRosa begins her millionth tirade about living in poverty. Lady Ana Paula points out that this is comparable to how she and her brother lived after their mother's death. She tells her in no uncertain terms that she is not to approach His Lordship for anything. She is accepting child support for Master Margaro but nothing else and Tia MentiRosa is not to even think about withdrawing that money.

Study:   Lord Rogelio is uncharacteristically drinking away his pain, emptying the brandy snifter and pouring more as he looks at the torn wedding photo of Lady Ana Paula. “You can't go back to Gustavo because you are my life,” he says to the photo. He thinks of the restaurant and the mariachi serenade of several weeks ago, then begins to sing the song as her voice echoes in his mind. Finally he says “I can't have you at my side. It wouldn't be fair to you.” as he downs the last of the brandy.

Inn, Shared Quarters:   As her singing underscores the scene, Lady Ana Paula prays to the Virgen to take care of them in these difficult times and to help His Lordship get the sick bitterness out of his heart so he can be happy. As she blows out the candle she discovers that Tia MentiRosa talks in her sleep. She is asking Helena about rings and how much they cost.

Full moon, cockcrow, then sunrise.

Study:  Maria brings coffee, obviously knowing that Lord Rogelio must have passed out at his desk the night before because he is wearing the very same clothes. Her manner is very maternal, even raising his hand to her face as Knave Skelator arrives. He asks her to leave them alone, she exits, and Skelator takes the seat on the other side of the desk.

Bruno:    Rogelio, are you sure sending Paula away was the best?
Rogelio:    Yes, I'm sure. (puts his hat on)
Bruno:    I don't know what happened, but if you want to prevent a legal action against you, well, you could divorce Paula.
Rogelio:    No. I would not ask for anything like that.
Bruno:    Well, I can imagine you're furious. First you make her leave, and second, her living under these conditions –
Rogelio:    What conditions?
Bruno:    She is at the inn. Pity. In a cramped room with two beds and your son on a cot. [cuartucho, catre]

A deep breath from His Lordship, accompanied by dark notes from the wind section.

La Fonda:  Maid Consuelo resigns to go back to the manor to help her godmother. Ulisses tells her not to end her education. They both tell her they love her very much. “At last you agree on something!” she says before kissing them goodbye. She departs with both of them watching her. However, when they turn and face each other, they immediately do the about face and walk in opposite directions.

Inn, Shared Quarters:   Tia MentiRosa writes something in her journal. The door opens behind her and Lord Rogelio enters. She gets up with a start. [We would also; how did he enter that building and get to what we assume is the first or second floor?]

Rosaura:    Damn, it annoys me that anyone can just enter my room (turns around) Don Rogelio!
Rogelio:    Where is Paula?
Rosaura:    She went out very early this morning to look for work because... we need to find a way to support –
Rogelio:    Yes, spare me the story. Where is she looking for work?
Rosaura:    I don't know. She didn't tell me.
Rogelio:    Very well. (prepares to exit)
Rosaura (grabbing the arm of the chair):   No, no, wait, wait, please. I'm very worried. Here in those passages people are talking about you two. What is the overlord's wife doing here?
Rogelio:    What people say is unimportant to me.
Rosaura:    But why not? You're the most important man in the region. Besides, although you don't believe it, we almost have no money. (feigns tears) My niece is looking  –  she's a fool but she's looking to volunteer in the free clinic in her free time.
Rogelio:    You don't say.
Rosaura:    Yes, you heard me correctly. Don Rogelio, I'm sick and running out of my medicines. You don't know how expensive they are.
Rogelio:    I will consider taking care of it. Send me the list. I will take charge of the bill.

She looks very disappointed as he exits. We know he was not fooled.

Clinic:  Lady Sneerwell enters in tears. Dr Ernesto stops his work to attend. Apparently she is not yet expecting. He assures her they had not been trying very long and that he will take her to a good gynecologist in Tuxtla.

Kitchen:  Sir Gustavo tells Maria that he prefers to take his breakfast there because he doesn't like dining alone in the formal dining room or on the terrace.  Lady Chatterley is currently indisposed. As she pours his coffee she enquires whether he will pursue Lady Ana Paula now that she is separated from His Lordship. The creepy pensive music begins. He tells her that what he felt or didn't feel for her is apart from his current responsibilities and that he will keep his promise to Lady Chatterley. It's a small town and he won't be able to avoid running into his former love.  He excuses himself because he has lost his appetite and exits.

Clinic:  Lord Rogelio arrives demanding to speak to them about Lady Ana Paula, only to be told that she has not been there. He then informs Ernesto that if he hires her he will remove his support from the clinic.  He does not want Her Ladyship to encounter Sir Gustavo.  This confounds Ernesto and Lady Daniela as well as us.

Outside Montero Manor:   Screechy music as Lady Chatterley exits the manor house and the lusty foreman approaches.

Efrain:    What's wrong, my queen? You look rather abandoned.
Sinthia:    I'm sorry, but I have a lot of problems here and I have to tend to them.
Efrain:    What else do you have to tend to but me? (Vainessa comes out of the house, unseen by Sinthia, then stops dead near the pillar to listen)
Sinthia:    Efrain, don't look to me right now –
Efrain (closing in):       Before you go, I've been thinking, well, that I want my son to be named after me. (Vainessa has clearly heard this and is incredulous. The violins go staccato, in horror-film mode.)
Sinthia:    What are you saying?
Efrain:    It's my baby, isn't it? I'm eager to meet little Efrain. (touches her abdomen as the unseen Vainessa goes into shock) Well, we'll see each other. (walks off. Vainessa waits until he's out of hearing, then approaches)
Vainessa:    Is it true what I just heard?
Sinthia:  What?
Vainessa:    The baby isn't Gustavo's; it's Efrain's!

A deer is caught in the headlights.

La Fonda, indoors:   Sir Hugo brings His Lordship inside, then exits at his master's order to begin searching for Lady Ana Paula. His Lordship is determined not to go home without finding Her Ladyship, who comes out to wait on him. The music is the lower strings and muted – though audible – percussion.

Ana Paula:    Good day. May I bring you the menu, sir? (He looks up with a mildly shocked expression)
Rogelio:    So you're working here. I can't believe you're doing this.
Ana Paula:    Why not? I'm not doing anything bad. I need money, I have a job, nothing more.
Rogelio:    Paula, you don't have to do this. I can maintain you.
Ana Paula:    You have never understood what I do and don't look for. I don't need you to maintain me.
Rogelio:    At least take the house I bought for you and my son.
Ana Paula:    Of course not! Understand that Margarito and I aren't interested in your money or a house. What we want is to be near you.
Rogelio:    You know that will not happen.
Ana Paula:    Yes, of course. You rejected me for this stupid revenge. Therefore, you don't have the right to reclaim anything about me. So are you going to order something to eat or  –  better –  leave? I just want you to remember that you may have taken revenge on me but Margarito is your son and has nothing to do with anything that happened between us. If God willing you don't want him out of your life you will make it up to him and above all, Rogelio, I hope he still loves you.

Outside Montero Manor: Vainessa is taking this more calmly than we anticipated and the percussion takes over momentarily.

Vainessa:    Why did you never tell me, Sinthia? Because it's the truth.
Sinthia:    No, how can you believe it? It's one of Efrain's idiocies.
Vainessa:    This is not the first time I've seen you together. When we were in Tuxtla, I noticed he was around you many times. Of course. Now I understand why Gustavo hates him. (violins in)
Sinthia:    Well, yes, yes. Yes, it's true. But Gustavo knows nothing, please. (Vainessa begins shaking her head in disbelief) Vanessa, you can't tell anyone, please, please.
Vainessa:    Of course. Sinthia, I'm supposed to be your best friend. Why did you not tell me before? It hurts that you don't trust me.
Sinthia:    Well, what was I going to say? What would have been your reaction to me having a relationship with someone like him? Eh? Tell me. (leads her inside) We have to talk.

La Fonda:  The stag caught in the headlights avoids the glare.

Rogelio:    Precisely because I love my son you can't go on living like this, deprived, in a pension –
Ana Paula:    Margarito is living as a Montero. With pride and with dignity. He's not interested in living in a big house far away from you. He's very annoyed with you and that should worry you.
Rogelio:    I'm worried, Paula. You have to accept the house. I understand you, but it's for my son.
Ana Paula:    As I told you, I am not going to live on your money. Much less on that of your son. What you give is for Margarito. For myself I will work and I will help Ernesto in the clinic.
Rogelio:    You will not work in that clinic. Ernesto has been told.
Ana Paula:    How can you do this to me? What nerve you have to corner me like this!
Rogelio:    If you do what you say, you will have to face the consequences. What's more, I am ordering that you will not work here.
Ana Paula:    Do what you want. Therefore I will sell candy in the street or go far away. I have no fear of work with dignity. I prefer that to Montero money. (exits. Rocio enters)
Rogelio:    Where is Macaria?
Chio:    She went out, but I don't know where.

He scowls.

Clinic:  Dr Ernesto and Lady Daniela discuss the problem and the unfairness of Lord Rogelio's edict and the need for Lady Ana Paula's help. Lady Daniela speculates that this edict may extend to all other businesses in the town.

Ulisses' Shop:  He has a sign outside the door indicating the need for help. Tia MentiRosa enters to enquire. Since Consuelo went back to Montero Manor Ulisses requires an intermediary through which to communicate with Macaria. He will pay the minimum wage. Tia MentiRosa being who she is negotiates for more. He tells her she can start immediately and that they will go in the storeroom to open boxes, but she begs off all heavy work. She manages that maneuver and excuses herself to check on Margarito. Ulisses removes the sign.

Lady Chatterley's Bedchamber:  She enters with Vainessa. They close the door.

Sinthia:    Here we can talk without being overheard. Sit down here. (leads her to the chest at the foot of the bed)
Vainessa:    Sinthia, whom do you have to worry about? You're with me, not that guy. He is very indiscreet. Nobody will hear you.
Sinthia:    It's not just that. He's also very stubborn. [aferrado] You know what I'm afraid of? That he is in love with me and that the baby is his and he will try to
Vainessa:    No, no, no, I can't believe this.
Sinthia:    He doesn't understand that there is nothing between us. He's so stubborn that he says when the baby is born he will demand a DNA test to find out who is the father.
Vainessa:    That's what comes from fooling around with this kind of people. (Sinthia starts to turn away, but Vainessa gets her attention) No, no, I understand you couldn't be locked up alone here and meeting nobody, but this is too much.
Sinthia:    No, no, you don't know understand, you don't know what it's like being locked up here. Rogelio never let me out to meet anybody. Always locked up, always locked up. You don't know understand –
Vainessa:    Yes, yes! But you have to think of better things. You have gotten pregnant on purpose, you fight with Gustavo. You should end it or you will lose him.
Sinthia:    You just don't understand these things and Gustavo can't know, please. At least now that Paula isn't here I have an opportunity to win Gustavo's love. What will happen to us?

Vainessa looks pensive but doubtful.

Ulisses' Shop:  Lord Rogelio enters and forbids him to hire his wife. Ulisses tries to explain his situation and that it was his wife who hired her for the business she now exclusively owns, but His Lordship doesn't wish to hear the stupid details. He is to follow the order or lose the rental of the properties. Ulisses asks about Tia MentiRosa. His Lordship is surprised that she is even enquiring about work, but allows it. However, Lady Ana Paula is not to work there. He departs, leaving Ulisses in a state of confusion.

Clinic:  Squire Miguel is incredulous and outraged. He decides that it would be best if his aunt and sister return to Tuxtla and he will help as he can, but Lady Daniela reminds him about keeping Margarito close to his father. Squire Miguel then has other bad news. His court case will go back to the beginning because he there is a new judge. The outcome of this is unpredictable.  [juez]

La Fonda:  Sir Gustavo and Lord Esteban arrive and are surprised to see Lady Ana Paula working there. She explains about the situation with the clinic. Lord Esteban offers assistance and Sir Gustavo is proud that she is standing on her own.

Parlour:  Consuelo polishes the table while Maria takes a call from Ulisses. Vainessa is passing by and stops when she hears “I didn't know.” When Maria ends the call she informs Consuelo that Lady Ana Paula took the position she vacated. Vainessa listens.  A rising note from the orchestra.

La Fonda:  Lord Esteban has engaged the assistance of Lady Chio. Lady Ana Paula brings them a bowl of nuts or something similar as they finish their coffee. Lord Esteban pays and she tells him the tip is excessive. Sir Gustavo tells her to accept it. Just on the nearby sidewalk and unseen by them arrive Lord Rogelio and Sir Hugo.  Percussion and violins have a their say.

This episode was edited to remove some of the musical punctuation, such as the ones ending Rogelio's scenes. Not that it saves a lot of time for more ads.

Muchas gracias, UA, for your splendidly written and delightful recap. I loved your asides: "Ulises simply wants all this to end. [As do all of us}" and, re the avances, "Lady Chatterley attempts suicide. We wish for her success." Amen!

I'm really surprised that Maria still trusts Bruno. She's usually more savvy, even when it comes to Cinthia. And Rogelio has told Maria that he doesn't trust Bruno, so why should she be turning to him?

I enjoyed the scene between Tia MentiRosa and Ulises. I guess he's trying to replace Macaria with someone else who's even more of a gossip and a whiner.

Though, as you said, UA, we all wish Cinthia success in her attempt at ending it all, I doubt that she'll succeed. Alas.

I don't think Maria knows much about why Rogelio doesn't trust Bruno. She has never witnessed his dodgy behavior around Ana Paula nor has she overheard any of the incriminating conversations between Bruno and Tia MentiRosa.

Or she does know and is doing as Rogelio would have told her: Pretend nothing has changed.

Of course it's too soon for Sinthia to die; everybody else has to find out about Efrain first!

hahaha loved ur last line.

I actually really enjoyed this epi, think because there were some twist in the plots and things were actually happening. totally didn't see AP working at the fonda, and rogelio's face was priceless.

even though I hate all that la tia says or does, i also liked the scene between her and ulises. esp ulises, he had this confused look the whole time.

during their down time, estaban & gus can make their own good guy superhero tag team. when I see them together, I can totally see them saving old ladies & young damsels.

thanks for the recap!

Thanks for your classy recap, I greatly look forward to it. I have no close captions so the recaps are really helpful.
What I am wondering is if Rohell had such noble motives in feigning this revenge on her, saying in the last episode that he really hoped that she found happiness with another man, why is he now ruining her chance for employment all over town. This is one of those writing inconsistencies I think. So much for setting her free.

LOVED it, UA! Especially the last line about Sin having success! LOL.

Yeah, Rohell is so conflicted right now. He says to himself that he wants to set Cupcake free, that she's "better off" without him, but when it comes right down to it, it's the same old same old. Saying and doing are two different things. Like if some nice gentleman came into town and took an interest in Cupcake, Rohell would spontaneously combust with rage. He's totally full of hot air.

He can tell himself that his rationale for "forbidding" Cupcake these jobs is to prevent her from being around Goose, for the sake of Sin. But this is manure. nothing really has changed. He wants Cupcake around (living under his control, in his house) so he can stay connected to her. She's not going for this and he's really frustrated because she simply doesn't understand! She's supposed to be connected with him forever, waiting for him forever, while he stews in his own bitter juice at the Hacienda, wallowing in self-pity! But no, instead Cupcake has this crazy idea that Rohell is done with her and she should get on with her life. How did she get that crazy idea? Oh right, that's what he told her—he kicked her out and told her he didn't love her anymore! LOL.

I find this whole thing so hilarious, because Rohell's plans have completely backfired and he's all flustered. Many times during this episode I found myself yelling at Rohell, "Serves you right, douchebag!" "How do you like THAT, jerk!" LOL

Many thanks, Urban Anthropologist, for an excellent recap. I have been away for 10 days and some stuff really did change on LQNPA.

AP has moved out of the Hacienda and into the Shop-n-Flop, Margaro may have just cut the Ogre off, and the Toxia Tia talks in her sleep. Sin is going to suicide (attempt),Vanesa figures out that Efrain is probable baker of Sin's bisquit-in-the-oven and Ulisses might get his goose cooked if he keeps hanging around Tia Mentirosa. This all has the feeling of some fine filler, doesn't it? I wonder by just how many epis LQNPA was extended?

Thanks again, Urban Anthropologist, for offering us your always lucid Victorian-style take on the dark and Gothick happenings in Sweltering Chiapas. Things certainly didn't lighten up in my absence.

Finally—A question for the group— Somebody in yesterday's comments referenced the great kerfuffle that happened in Mexico, along about this point in the plot, when the writers served up something that the fans DID NOT LIKE and the echoes of this happening were heard all the way up here in the good ole USA. Anybody else remember the events of which I am speaking? Didn't Ana Bertha get involved in calming the fans down?

Elna June

elna june, I know exactly what the big kerfuffle is about. I was trying to "keep up" with the episodes as they aired in Mexico. (I didn't totally keep up with everything and did miss several episodes along the way.)

Anyway, my guess is that this particular manure will hit the fan in several weeks or a month? (I don't want to get too specific.) It'll be in a while, anyway. When it happens, I (and probably others) will tell you exactly what it was. My guess is that a lot of us who have followed LQNPA will probably be saying, "Hey, wait a minute . . . " as well (having the same reaction that was had in Mexico when the show first aired).

Elvira- totally with you on your comment (the first one). I was snickering at Rogel to, especially when AP comes around the corner at the restaurant. And she finally used the word estupido! Ok, it was about his venganza but it's a start. The idiot.

Can't the cows stampede over everyone? Or would Esteban and Gus put their capes on and save them? Love the image of them as superheroes.

Maybe that should be added to the storyline list. A Great Mexican Hero novela. Believe it or not I'm walking on air... (like Cinthia is trying to do).

Kelly

Hi UA! That was a fun episode, and I really enjoyed your recap. Maria warned Rohell that he didn't understand what he started, and now we've got Sin freaking that the Goose is running after AP and Rohell trying to keep AP from any gainful employment not to mention volunteering. How he thinks AP will ever tolerate being under his thumb after he supposedly had his revenge AND kicked her out - the man doesn't think!

FYI, Tía called the room a pocilga = pigsty.

UA, this was amazing. Yet another excellent, detailed laden recap. It's so evident the care and attention you give to all of the details. Your commentary is always spot on and a few of my favorites include: "Lady Chatterley follows and maintains her shrewish demeanor" and "Sinthia (as the Furies crash-land and advance on them". Your conversation translations are so helpful!

I missed the second half of this. So Vain knows the truth? As telling the truth would be of no benefit to her, she will likely keep the secret.

So now Rogelio will put an end to Ana's livlihood. You throw her out but yet want her to depend on you to survive. She's repeatedly told you she doesn't want your money, yet you continue to throw it at her. Basta.

I'm trying to hang in there but the only thing keeping me is the wonderful recaps and great comments.

Diana

UA, thanks so much for the meticulous recap. Your work including the vocabulary is appreciated. That last line was a doozy! LOL!

I too wondered how Rohell got to the upper floor when visiting AP's room. An elevator seems highly unlikely.

I don't look forward to the possibility of Mikey facing the threat of jail time again.

Though Rohell says he doesn't care what people say, I hope AP ends up selling candy to passerbys. Then I hope someone like Abel (with an extremely diapproving look to Rohell) comments how he purchased sweets from Cupcake while she trolled the streets.

Thanks, Audrey. That word always stumps me, often due to pronunciation. I will correct the lead post and here's hoping that retyping it will make it sink in.

Bruno now sees Rosaura as a liability. I'm willing to bet that he will try to off her as soon as she threatens him again.

If banishing Ana Paula has served any useful purpose, it was to expose Sinthia's mental illness. Whether her suicide attempt is real or not, her crazy will show.

Barbara wrote: "Then I hope someone like Abel (with an extremely diapproving look to Rohell) comments how he purchased sweets from Cupcake while she trolled the streets."

LOL! I'd LOVE to see that! Rohell really needs to have his nose rubbed in it.

I think we're all wondering whether this all is a "noble" gesture to let AP find a better partner (as he claimed to María last night), or Rohell's bizarre revenge part 2. Like folks mentioned this weekend, it seems to be a sick mix of both! It seems more like he is punishing himself by "letting her go", yet he still has to punish the people around him as well out of pure orneriness, including her and Margarito.

Rohell isn't able to let her go. He can't let go of his control over her life, and he certainly can't let her go if he thinks that Goose will benefit. So much for "noble gestures" LOL! I was really enjoying the way she kept stumping him! Also her challenging him on caring what she was doing for her livelihood since he KICKED HER OUT! No, Rohell, you wouldn't tolerate her seeing someone else either - give me a break!

How did Rohell get up to the second floor? = Hugo, his personal man-elevator.

Aferrado = obstinate, stubborn, headstrong. I had to look that one up too. Now for our Effer, eferrado, would be appropriate LOL!

Aferrar(se) = also means to seize, grasp, clutch. Appropriate for out miss Cynthia, no?

Rohell is delusional and in denial. I agree with you, Audrey, I think in some way he is punishing himself, and wow, is he wallowing in self-pity here!

I don't think that he did any of this as an attempt to get revenge on Cupcake. I believe that he "forgave" her for the Goose thing (the same way she "forgave" him for the Vain mistress thing) (BUT I HAVEN'T FORGIVEN HIM!!!!) *ahem*. Had not this whole depression thing got started, he wouldn't have kicked her out and cooked up the bogus "revenge" story.

Part of his problem is that he's impulsive and doesn't think things through, especially when he's running high on emotion. Maria has pointed this out to him before. He kicked out Cupcake but didn't think through how that would develop. He thought she'd obediently go live in his house in town, and then he'd get to visit her regularly, and he'd still be connected to her.

I have said many times that ever since she came to the Hacienda to be his nurse, she has brightened his days. That's still true. When he thought to "give her up," he never wanted to "give up" her brightening his bleak, dreary, douchebaggery-filled days. He just figured he'd get up in the morning, and be able to look forward to darkening her doorstep in San Gabriel, then go home and feel sad (but noble) because after all, he "gave her up."

He's such a moron! It's actually quite delicious to see how unhappy he is at the unanticipated outcome of HIS actions. Cupcake is moving on, and is determined that he is going to have as little as possible to do with her "new" life. Take that, douchebag! LOL

We can't look for logic in what Rogelio is doing with regard to her -- he is depressed. He may be able to function in his work but in his personal life he's losing it. Under the heading of "in vino veritas" he admits when he is drunk that Ana Paula is his life -- or what gives meaning to it.

When he told Sinthia she was afraid of not being woman enough to hold onto a man he wasn't just talking about sex; he was talking about character defect and immaturity. No man as hard-working as himself or Gustavo could stand to be with anyone like her for any length of time. She's lazy, selfish, and pathologically jealous. She loves no one and gives to no one. She is the polar opposite of Ana Paula who loves, cares for, helps, and doesn't go out of her way to see evil in others.

I can't wait for Rogelio to find out about Efrain, but that's probably going to take another couple weeks.

Audrey, thanks again. And the verb definitely describes our Sin.

When Rohell told Sinthia the problem was that she didn't think she was woman enough to hold on to Goose, boy did he hit the nail on the head! She was so insulted by it. But lady, it's the truth! If she could see that, she could change. But she's blind so she's stuck blaming everyone else and the world for the hell her life has turned out to be - most of which she herself created.

UA wonderful recap as always. Agree with all of you about Rohell being a douche bag, but I wonder what it is going to take, to snap him out of this. It's almost like an anvil is awaiting or something.I can't stand what he is doing to AP.

I lol'd when Tia was talking in her sleep about money. Guess she dreams about it too.

I did like when Uli and Macaria were saying bye to Consuelo and they started to smile at each other as if nothing was wrong, and then walked off in opposite directions. lol

Sinthia did make her own problems. Here's what she should have done: A few years before the beginning of the story she should have asked Vainessa for a loan so she could go to Europe in search of a Prince Charming in one of the major cities. She could have promised to pay her back after claiming her inheritance. You'd think she would have been smart enough to think of that.

Poor Maria, who will feel a lot of unnecessary guilt for all this.

Count the number of episodes in which Rohell is loving and sweet and the number in which he is cruel, vindictive, and controlling. Even if he were to become a saint in tonight's episode all the way to the finale, based on the way he has behaved most of the time, he is the archetype of an anti-hero.

Urban: Great detailed recap and vocab, too.

Hasn't Tia been taking money from her niece and nephew and anyone else who will give her a handout all through this novela. Shouldn't she have something to show for her machinations? This woman has too many bad habits and a screechy voice.

What does Rogelio expect. He kicks his wife to the curb and resents the fact that she has any independence left. Paula - move to another town. End of story.

Pasofino, I've been wondering about how much money Rosaura has spent and how much she has stashed, perhaps under another name.

We know she worked for Fed back when Ana Paula was conceived. We know she took a sizable payoff from Elsa la Vaca to leave Fed alone. What happened to that money? Is there a safe deposit box full of jewelry somewhere?

Then there was the money paid to Ana Paula upon hire and the increased (doubled?) monthly allowance she received after the wedding. She made that bank account available to Tia MentiRosa. Where is that money now? Rogelio was paying the bills on the house in Tuxtla before Tia invaded the hacienda, so we know she wasn't paying any rent or utility bills.

AP's monthly allowance stopped -- at her own request -- when Rogelio revealed that there was no working capital for the ranch. When Tia MentiRosa complained she told her to stuff it.

I have never believed Tia MentiRosa's cries of poverty throughout the story. I have since week 2 or 3 been sure that there was enough money to pay the four months' rent owed to Maximo when MentiRosa tried to pimp out Ana Paula to that repulsive slime bucket. Or why have we been calling her Tia MentiRosa?

Urban: You are right and funny. Somewhere, sometime, that money has to be found. Paula and Miguel are now aware of some of her behavior, but, they are going to be shocked when it all hits the fan.

Not surprised by Rohell's behavior. He simply hasn't changed his stripes.

We seemed to have been placed back at the beginning of this novela when Rohell was attracted to Ana Paula because she stood up to him and refused to take his crap. In that regard, nothing has changed. Only difference is that this time his actions and his actions alone have caused him to again try to regain his control of Ana Paula even though he has forced her from Montero Manor. Guess I'm saying "what has love got to do with it." It is the old rubber band thing that men do. Get close and then boomerang away at the first sliver of perceived rejection.

What hell will Tia Rosa present to our favorite fonda/fondue couple. Macaria might look pretty good after dealing with Tia Rosa for a few minutes.

As usual, great recap.

Thanks for the recap UA.

Tia Mentirosa's favorite shriek: WORK, OMIGOD, NOT WORK, I CAN'T W-O-R-K!!!

My prediction: Ulisses and Macaria will find Tia MentiRosa so irritating they will reconcile rather than keep her employed there.

UA, I love your prediction re Ulises and Macaria!!

The best reason to keep watching this is see Tia get her comeuppance. That'll be a good day.

Is there anything keeping Ap in this town that I suddenly can't remember the name of? I know she wanted Margarito to be near his father, but if the father is being a butthead and keeping her from making a living, why can't she move to Tuxtla? Somewhere that said butthead doesn't own anything. It makes me want Bruno to win, just for a little while, so Rogelio can see what it's like to not be rich and not have the power to lord over everyone. It'd do him good in the long run.

Kelly

Before Tia MentiRosa meets her Karmageddon I want Ana Paula to confront her. She needs to find out what a conniving greedy b1tch this woman is. The only thing I can't come up with a prediction for is whether she will learn the truth by hearing it from someone else, overhearing it somehow, or forcing a confession.

UA - terrific recap. Thanks for all the dialogue and music coverage.

"I find this whole thing so hilarious, because Rohell's plans have completely backfired and he's all flustered." Elvira, Amen! I couldn't stop laughing at Rogelio. He's dying inside and AP's going forward like the Unsinkable Molly Brown.

I was PO'ed at Rogelio for yelling at Hugo. Then I remembered the writers haven’t found a reason for Hugo to go shirtless in a long time, then I got super-PO'ed.

Loved the recap UA. I preferred this over the actual episode which is really dark and gloomy. So Rog the caveman is trying to keep AP from working. He really needs to wake up to the 21st century lol.

I loved that she didn't back down and wouldn't take the house or money.

In a way, Rog's stupid behavior has opened the door for Gus and AP to possibly rekindle their relationship.

In the previws, Gus busts the mean girls attacking AP. Should be interesting.

I feel that Cupcake is destined to be with the old turd, even though he's being odious at the moment. As someone else has noted, I don't think she loves Goose anymore.

The writers of this show jerk us back and forth between Goose and Rohell, but I don't think Cupcake is undecided anymore. She made her decision a while ago, when she chose Rohell for good and told him she loved him. (And this right after he had Vain as the mistress! Now way would most of us taken him back so quickly after that bit of douchebaggery!) She also swore in front of God in the chapel that she loved him. I think she means it for real and it'll take a lot for her to return to Goose.

Cupcake knows Rohell and his ways and wants him anyway. Go figure.

This is not a spoiler, just my thoughts. That Rohell is doing this idiocy "for her sake" I think makes it more likely that he'll be forgiven and get Cupcake back. (Plus, the dude is severely depressed. Not that it makes what he's doing any less odious.)

He really needs to straighten out soon, for Margarito's sake. One thing that always stuck in the back of my mind when I first saw this was that Cupcake and Rohell have to be together at the end, because Margarito will not understand it otherwise. The kid has been through the wringer already, he deserves to live with both parents, in harmony. No one will be "mom" to him other than Cupcake, and mom and dad should live together, dammit, for the kid's sake. (No spoilers, I'm just sharing my thoughts about this phase of the storyline.)

Thanks, first, for all the wonderful recaps and comments over the last couple of weeks. I've been reading everything but you all got so deep into the weeds, there wasn't anything left for me to say.

Here's my one little insignificant comment.

I think Rogelio thought up the Revenge Story on the spur of the moment. Ana Paula wouldn't leave him on her own, regardless of how nasty he was behaving. She made it clear she loved him and was going to stay by his side--even after he forbid her to come into the despacho and his bedroom and didn't want to see her at meals or telling her that things had changed and he didn't love her anymore didn't work. She knew him too well. The Revenge Story was the one she didn't see coming and didn't know how to handle.

I agree with all the other comments regarding his behind the scene desire for her to find happiness with someone *whole* as another way to punish himself and wallow in his self-imposed pity party.

When AP showed some spunk and was prepared to make it on her own, his pride was hurt. Now everything is backfiring on him. Yeah, the look on his face when he saw AP in the Fonda was priceless.

I want to see the New and Improved Ana Paula tangling with the Old and Tired Same 'Ole Same 'Ole Rogelio for awhile before they get back together again.

Can't wait for tonight. Was Sin serious or is this another ploy for Goose's sympathy (it wouldn't work for me, if I were Goose), but he's so naive, he's going to insist she see a specialist, which she will probably wriggle out of.
Anita

Margarito might be a little annoying to us at times but he is a sweet and loving child who deserves two parents who love him... and each other.

There is no doubt that Rogelio loves Ana Paula, but depression often expresses itself this way in men. A close friend of mine is on the outs with her favored brother for this very reason. However, her brother is a narcissist as well, which makes any hope of reconciliation impossible.

Rogelio is not a narcissist. The real Rogelio is the man who had the chapel fixed up for Ana Paula and who filled the terrace with white roses for her. He is also the man who provided the bulk of the funding for the free clinic. That is who he was all the time before the accident and that's who he wants to be. His current behavior is hurting him just as much as it's hurting everyone else. Whether he will ever get out of the wheelchair or not he needs to be that man again.

Only Ana Paula can make him do that with some help from Maria and Margarito. Who still needs to tell somebody how Tia MentiRosa caused his accident.

Great recap. And it is true, because it is one of my favorite episodes so far. Don't know why, but it reminded me old pink novelas. And we know, that LQNPA is not that kind.
It was really funny to watch him drunk. Poor Rogelio, something went wrong, because it was such a great plan. Lol. He adores her, that is why he wants to take care of her. But no way it possible when she thinks that he hates her. And she is right. So Rogelio, you lost the game. He needs to admit, that he still loves her and she will fogive him. Her love for him is much more bigger, than he deserves for now.
No way she will return to Goose. She turned the page. I know, that Goose is dreaming of that, Sin and Rogelio are afraid of that, but no way. I trust in Paula's feelings.
Alegria

Anita, you're right, I think Rohell cooked up the "revenge" thing on the fly, because she wasn't going for the same old tired douchebaggery. He upped the ante and she went for it. But he upped the ante too much, because as far as she's concerned, he's done with her. So she's gotta move on, right? Even though her heart is broken, a girl's gotta do what she's gotta do.

Alegria, you're right, Cupcake loves Rohell for real. She serenaded him, dammit! She's in too deep. He's given her so many reasons to give up on him, but she hasn't. She's put up with far more than most women would. Though if he does push it too far, for too long, she'll extract herself from him, for her own mental health (and who could blame her?). But as I've noted many times during this novela, Rohell is usually poised to fold like a cheap deck of cards for her. He's sobbing in his booze over her now. He can't hold out much longer, can he?

UA, I also agree that Rohell is capable of being a better man, and definitely isn't a narcissist. He's a pain in the neck, he's a bitter old turd at times, but at the core he wants to be better. Depression can really mess a person up, and he's been suffering from that, in some form, for a really long time. Not that this excuses every tidbit of douchebaggery that he's done. But his life has been so bleak for a long time. When he finally gets himself together and realizes that he needs to embrace what he has (which is a helluva lot), then he can start to improve and be a better man for real.

UA, thanks for another excellent view of the suffering at Montero Manor.

I really want AP to see the true Tia character and actions. Possibly even choke Tia with a golden neck chain.

Audrey described Hugo as Rohell's "man elevator." Since Hugo has had an excellent view of AP and Rohell up close and personal, maybe he could act independently and just dump Rohell on his black-clad butt in the middle of the road, halfway between the village and the hacienda. That might give Rohell some needed time to consider what he's done to AP and Margarito.

Although I believe in AP's love for Rohell, I'm suffering a bit of RDF (Rohell Douchebag Fatigue) right now.

La Paloma

The great irony is that the revenge was an idea of AP. In 108 episode after the first night together AP said, that she is afraid of this. I think, when she said, that this night made her the happiest woman in the world, he remembered about her main fears.

RDF (Rohell Douchebag Fatigue), hahahha love that!

I agree with the other comments hoping that AP finds out about la tia & really sticks it to her before the anvil hits, ahhhhhh those thoughts make me smile

agree niecie! why yell at poor hugo, all he does is work work work for him & he's super loyal
jlk

Urban: Wonderful the way you captured the chaos of those first scenes! You gave me a real chuckle with your description of the previews:

"Lady Chatterley attempts suicide. We wish for her success." LOLOL!!

I thought that deserved a little gallows humor.

ITA Urban, Rohell is not a narcissist. Narcissists are not that self destructive. He does get a bit of pleasure over other peoples pain, though. He also seems to get some sick satisfaction over his own pain. He is very complex.
ITA Alegria, AP can't be in love with Gus any more, that ship has sailed.
I have to say the comments are so interesting.
Now see, I think that Tia has no money because she secretly gambles.

Anon at 7:20--I'm certain you are right. I do remember something about that in their reconciliation and her fear of his pulling a stunt like he did on Vanessa and he swore he wouldn't do it.

So he had some basis for what he did, but I still think he thought of it on the fly when the other methods didn't work.
Anita

Can someone pls tell me the singer of, and also the song that sings when Paula kisses Montero?

Thanks
