Chapter
193: Little Boy Lost
Valverde
House, Study: Dimitrio Mendoza had suspected that his old friend
Pretty Boy Argüelles was The Scorpion. Facing that this was fact
was a different kettle of fish.
“How
do you know this?”
“He
himself confessed to Nadia.”
“Adolfo.
Adolfo killed Mónica.”
“And
Refugio. And many other people.”
Dimitrio
took one second more to take this in. He silently left the house.
Valverde
House, Bedroom: Pretty Boy Argüelles begged his bride to
forgive him. He talked about his own pain when he heard that his
sister was dead because of Pedro Medina and what it had done to his
life. He cried far more than he ever had before.
“I
need you. I need you to forgive me. You would do it. Every year I
was away from you killed me. I was alone. I lost feeling for life.
I beg you not to leave me. You are the only one who can save me.”
Josefina
knew he was lost forever. “No. Don't make me feel guilty for your
decisions, Adolfo.”
“Forgive
me. I beg you. Don't leave me. Let's go. Help me. Help me escape
from the authorities. Let's go away from here. Listen. We can have
our dreams. We can have it all.”
“Adolfo,
those dreams would end in a nightmare. I can't... I can't marry you,
Adolfo. I had believed you had changed. The dear Adolfo who had
brought me roses all those days, who won me with words and beautiful
things. Now I know all that is all a lie.”
“It
was the only sincerity in my life. You are the dream of my life.
The woman I love above all things.”
“If
that is true, show me by doing the right thing. Paying for your
crimes.”
“I
can't do that!” he shouted through his tears. “Understand me,
please!”
“Don't
come near me!” she shouted as she stepped away. “Don't touch me,
Adolfo. Your hands are drenched in blood.”
“I
can't go to prison, Josefina. Not for you or anyone.”
They
stared at each other.
Solares
Apartment: Police chief José Luis Álvarez was visiting
Esmeralda, who was minding the Almonte children. His cell phone
rang. He checked the ID screen.
“Hello?
I'll be right there.” He ended the call.
“What
happened?”
“The
wedding was cancelled. In the meantime, don't leave the house. Stay
here and watch the children. I'll send guards to watch the house.”
“What's
happening?”
“I
know who The Scorpion is. I'm going to get him.” He ran out
without another word.
Mendoza
Apartment: Dimitrio had gone home. He had removed his uniform
jacket and was sitting on the couch, looking at the photo of himself
and his dead fiancée, Mónica Rentería.
He thought back to her
funeral. Adolfo had been there conveying condolences. He had looked
him in the eye. They had embraced. Adolfo's act had taken him for
the worst ride of his life. He got up and loaded his pistol. He
tucked it into the back of his trousers. His cell phone rang. “What
do you want? You know who the Scorpion is? I'll be there.” He
ended the call and ran out, pulling out his shirttail to cover the
gun.
Valverde
House, Bedroom: Adolfo would not give up so easily.
“Josefina,
run away with me. Please do not abandon me. I beg you, save me.
Save me. Save me. For God's sake put yourself in my place. Come
with me where we can start a new life together. With our children.
Where I won't need a gun. I know you can help me. Please help me.”
“Adolfo,
understand this. You can't escape who you are. Nobody can escape
from themselves. Nobody. This life you are offering me, this role
doesn't exist.” He collapsed on the couch at these words. “There
is noplace in the world where you can find peace, Adolfo.”
“Yes,
with you there is!”
“That
is not true!”
“Listen
to me,” he begged.
“Adolfo,
do you really believe I would have a killer as the father of my
children? No. Adolfo, you have to surrender to the authorities.”
“I
can't endure prison, Josefina.”
“Even
if I ask you to? In the name of the love you say you have for me?
Turn yourself in! Kill The Scorpion! Do it.”
“The
only one who can kill The Scorpion is you. Your love. Tell me you
will marry me. Tell me you will have me at your side. Say you will
not abandon me, please. If you do this, I'm prepared to spend the
rest of my life in prison with you as my wife. Tell me.”
Josefina
was in as much pain as he was. “No, Adolfo. No. No! I cannot
marry you.”
She
walked over to the nightstand and picked up the phone.
“What
are you doing?”
“Calling
the police.”
He
crossed the room in two steps. He took the phone and threw it across
the room, then he pushed her back onto the bed.
“No!
Adolfo, no!” she screamed. He pulled back in horror at what he
might have done. He looked in the full length mirror for a moment in
disgust, then left the room, closing the door behind him. Josefina
cried as she tried to catch her breath.
Valverde
House, Parlour: Nadia and Victor remained in the parlour with
their daughter. Neither wanted to talk about what was happening.
But Adolfo forced the issue when he came in.
“Why
are you crying, Uncle?” Victoria asked. She went over to him.
“Victoria,”
said Victor in a warning tone. But the child seemed not to hear her
father.
Adolfo
knelt to be face to face with his niece. He held her in front of him
and managed to smile for her.
“Victoria,
don't ever forget that I love you. We may not see each other for a
long time, but I'll always take care of you.”
“What
long time? What are you saying? Where are you going?” she asked,
starting to cry.
“Are
you trying to escape?” asked Victor.
“Please
don't do this,” said Nadia. “I beg you. Turn yourself in.”
Adolfo
picked up his niece and stepped closer to her mother. “I can't. I
only hope to finally have peace. I love you, sis.” He hugged her
with his free arm. She hugged him back.
“I
love you,” she said.
“Forgive
me,” he said.
He
kissed Victoria and put her down on her feet. Then he walked past
Victor and out of the house. He walked up to his car and saw that
the tires had been flattened. That's when Pedro Medina pulled up.
He grinned like a mad scientist in a bad movie.
“I
hope with this you will realize that you are permanently in my world,
Fofito,” said Pedro. “You are a criminal equal to me. What's
with you, idiot? You try to show two faces of a coin but that's
impossible, idiot. Adolfo is dead. You were the first victim of The
Scorpion. Now get into the back seat. We'll go far away together.
They'll never find us. You and I are invincible, Fofito. I am
Pedro Medina and you, imbecile, are my balls. If you want to escape
you have no other option. Now stop crying and get in the car.”
Adolfo
got into the back seat of Pedro's car. The driver pulled away just
as the police siren was heard. The two police cars rounded the
corner and stopped, discharging several officers.
Peralta
House: Macario returned alone. He told Dominga he had looked
everywhere for Kevin.
“You
better find him, Macario. Our son left. Our boy left and it's all
your fault.”
“Forgive
me – “ Macario was afraid of Dominga's anger and the guilt she
would make him feel.
“I
don't want to hear these words until you come back with him. Do you
hear me?” He hung his head in embarrassment. “How unfair you've
been. Bring back my son!”
“Kevin
isn't your son!”
She
slapped him hard.
“He
may not be my son, but the boy has won my heart. He needs a family
and I want to give it to him! If you don't want him to be part of
this family, the one who has to leave is you! Listen well, Macario.
You don't come back into this house without Kevin. You will find our
son!”
“Very
well,” he murmured as he turned to leave.
Valverde
House: Nadia sat on the parlour couch with Victoria on her lap.
She knew in that moment she had seen her brother for the last time.
Monserrat and Alejandro came in.
“Nadia,
how is Josefina?” Monserrat asked.
“Uncle
Adolfo left and he's not going to marry Aunt Josefina,” said
Victoria. She began to cry.
“Love,
why don't you play for a little while in the garden with Manuela?”
asked Monserrat.
“You're
going to talk about grown-up stuff?”
“Yes,
my love.”
“OK.”
Manuela came to take Victoria outside. The adults waited until they
were out of earshot.
“Dimitrio
knows what's happened,” Monserrat said, quietly.
“He's
going to kill him. If he doesn't turn himself in, he will kill him,
Victor!” said Nadia.
Victor
held his wife as she began crying again.
The
ladies went upstairs and knocked on Josefina's bedroom door. She had
just ended a phone call and she was dumbfounded for a moment.
“Josefina,
it's Monserrat. Nadia is with me. Open up and let us in.”
Josefina
opened the door.
“Pedro
Medina has just called. He's setting a trap for Dimitrio and Adolfo.
We can't let anything happen to them; we have to do something.”
They
all went downstairs.
Abandoned
Warehouse: Pretty Boy Argüelles paced. Pedro Medina sat in his
rocking chair, smoking a cigar. One of his thugs rocked the chair so
his boss wouldn't have to. It was impossible to tell what he was
thinking as he watched his boss. Freud would have loved watching
this. He would have enjoyed seeing a man being rocked in a chair by
someone else as he sucked on his adult pacifier. Except that nothing
pacified Pedro Medina. He enjoyed taunting Pretty Boy Argüelles.
He almost laughed as he said, “Calm down, Fofito. They'll be here
in less than five minutes. I don't know why you're so nervous.”
Outside
the gate surrounding the warehouse complex, Dimitrio pulled up and
got out of his car. José Luis arrived right behind him.
“Dimitrio!
Why didn't you call out the Navy?”
“This
is between Adolfo and me,” he said. “Pedro Medina will also be
here.”
“That
guy knows I'm after Refugio's killer. For that I want The Scorpion
taken alive and thrown in prison.”
They
ran through a few ruined walls and arches. José Luis was catching
up to Dimitrio, yelling at him to slow down and remain calm. “Calm
down. Don't proceed yet.”
A
helicopter appeared overhead. They looked up for a second. Both
realized that the copter belonged to Medina. Dimitrio hit José
Luis in the back of the head, knocking him out cold on the pavement.
“I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!” he said. He headed inside the
warehouse.
The
copter had landed. Pedro, The Scorpion, and the two goons were on
their way to board it.
“We're
going to escape and we have to step on it,” Pedro said. “The
police and the Navy are after us. We're saving The Scorpion.” He
touched Adolfo. “Believe me. Together we will be invincible.”
The
Scorpion lagged behind the others and looked behind him. The two
thugs were dressed in black. Adolfo was the only one in white. He
made an easy target.
“Adolfo!
Adolfo!” Dimitrio called out. He was following with his pistol in
hand. Pedro boarded the copter.
Adolfo
stopped and turned around when he reached the plane. He looked for a
brief moment at his former friend. Dimitrio shot twice, but wasn't
close enough to hit. Pretty Boy Argüelles tried to board the
copter, but Pedro kicked him out as it began its ascent.
“Now
you will know the true meaning of treason,” said Pedro. Adolfo
fell to the ground as Pedro sneered at him. The copter ascended.
He
scrambled to his feet and drew his pistol. He and Dimitrio stared at
each other over the barrels of their weapons.
Alejandro,
Monserrat, and Josefina arrived at the scene. Josefina was still in
her bridal gown and jewels. Alejandro told the women to wait for him
by the car while he looked for Dimitrio and Adolfo. However,
Josefina would not wait and followed him into the abandoned
buildings. Monserrat followed her when she refused to listen to her
warning.
“Put
down the pistol! Put it down!” Dimitrio shouted.
Adolfo
looked up, then threw the pistol down. Dimitrio tossed his aside,
then charged him for a fight. He knocked him down and punched his
face twice. They got to their feet and punched and kicked each other
until their faces were bloodied. Pretty Boy knocked Dimitrio to the
ground and landed two more punches before running for his weapon.
Dimitrio crawled toward his, got up, and began chasing him.
Alejandro
and the ladies found José Luis lying on the ground. He felt a
pulse, said that the police chief was alive, and Josefina ran into
the complex. Alejandro told Monserrat to stay with José Luis while
he went in after Josefina. A shot rang out. Dimitrio shouted “Don't
move!”
The
former friends stared down the barrels of their weapons once again.
The showdown at the OK Corral couldn't have been more tense.
“I'm
sorry, Dimitrio,” said Adolfo. “But you didn't listen to me. I
won't go to prison.”
“It
was you, you bastard. It was you who killed Mónica. All this time
it was you! How could you do this? How could you look me in the
face after everything that happened?”
“You
can't know. Do you think it was easy for me to kill my friend's
fiancée?”
“Friend?
You lied! You looked me in the face all this time! You lived in my
home! You came to her funeral. You embraced me. Friend?”
“Believe
me, I didn't want to hurt her. But there was nothing else I could
do. She followed me. One of my men fired. There was an open door
and she came in. She realized it was me. It was my life or hers. I
didn't want to kill her, I swear.”
“But
she is dead. So am I. And all the others as well.”
“I'm
sorry, but I can't have you following me all my life. It's going to
be over here. The last death of The Scorpion.”
Josefina
arrived and shouted “No, Adolfo! Don't do it!”
He
turned to her and said, “Forgive me, Josefina. Forgive me.”
He
then lowered the gun, pulled it behind his back, and removed the
magazine. He raised the empty weapon quickly and aimed it at
Dimitrio. Dimitrio shot once in the heart. Adolfo swayed slightly
without lowering his armed hand. Josefina cried out “No!!!!”
Dimitrio shot again, this bullet landing lower down.
“No!
No!” Josefina cried out. She began running toward him as he began
to fall. “No, Adolfito, no!”
As she knelt by his side he said
“After all that, I always loved you” with his last breath.
“Don't
leave me,” she begged. But it was too late. He closed his pretty
green eyes for the last time. Josefina leaned over his body. She
cried.
José
Luis, Alejandro, and Monserrat arrived at that moment. Monserrat
went to Dimitrio and asked “Are you alright?”
He
did not answer. He walked over to Pretty Boy's dead body and
said to Josefina “I'm sorry I ruined your wedding.” He then
walked away.
“Josefina,
I'm so sorry,” Monserrat said.
Josefina
cried. “Oh, dear friend. Adolfo wanted this. You know? He
looked for it to end this way. Why did I know this would be the only
way it had to happen, for him to save himself? How I wanted to do
something for him! My love, you asked me so long ago. How could I
have known you had become The Scorpion?” The tears fell like rain.
“When you were crying in my arms it was because you had lost your
soul.”
She
kissed his forehead. Faust was dead and the devil had won.
Valverde
House, Parlour: Nadia and Victoria cried.
“Don't
cry, love,” Nadia told her daughter. “Your uncle is
going on a long trip.”
“Will
we see him again?” asked the child.
“Now,
you're too little to understand a lot of things, but your uncle has
made a lot of mistakes.”
“Was
that why Aunt Finita isn't going to marry Uncle Adolfo? I won't talk
to her because I can't forgive her. I'm mad at her.”
“Love,
it's much more complicated than that. Your uncle did something very
bad and we couldn't help him.”
“Where
is he going on this trip?”
“To
a place where he can pay for what he's done. He has to take
responsibility for his mistakes.”
“In
prison?”
“Yes,
my love. In prison.”
Nadia
hugged her daughter and both continued crying. Victor watched,
feeling helpless. Finally he knelt to talk to Victoria.
“Daughter,
your mother is right. We're not going to abandon your uncle. We'll
be allowed to visit him soon. I know he will be very happy to see
you.”
“What
did he do that was so bad he's going to prison?”
“He
hurt a lot of people and he needs to pay his debt to society,”
Nadia said. She hugged Victoria just as Victor's cell phone rang.
He stood up, looked at the screen, and answered.
“What
happened?” He listened and ended the call in three seconds without
saying anything else.
“My
love, who called?”
“Alejandro.”
“What
happened?”
“He's
on his way back.”
“And
my brother?” she asked. He took her hand. “No! Victor, no!”
She
sank back onto the couch repeating herself. Victor embraced her.
Bus
Stop: Kevin got on the bus and the doors closed. Macario
arrived just before the driver prepared to pull away from the curb.
He knocked on the glass doors until they opened. Kevin came down the
steps, asking him what he was doing there. “I'm only in your way,
after all,” he said. Macario admitted he was wrong. He had
accused him of a crime he didn't commit. Kevin called him out on his
attitude. Since he had arrived in Aguazul, Macario had wanted him to
leave. But Macario didn't let him go. He told him he was his son
and his place was with him. Macario echoed Dominga's attitude to him
about coming home to them.
They finally embraced.
Warehouse
Grounds: There was nothing more that anyone could do. José
Luis tried to help Josefina to her feet. A police siren was heard in
the distance. She cried, hoping that Adolfo's soul would rest in
peace.
“With
every act of The Scorpion his soul was slowly dying,” she said. “Of
pain and regret.”
“Pedro
Medina set him on this path,” said Alejandro. “That wretch
destroyed his life.”
“And
mine,” said Josefina. “This morning everything was taken away.”
“Josefina,
let's get out of here,” said Monserrat, gently. She helped her up.
Her hands were stained with Adolfo's blood. She and Alejandro helped
her out. José Luis lingered long enough to look down at the body.
Mendoza
Apartment: Dimitrio was alone in his living room, staring into
nothing. There was a knock. He opened the door and Rosario came in
and embraced him.
“Son,
son. I was so worried when you called.”
“I
killed him. Adolfo was The Scorpion. Adolfo killed Mónica.”
“I
heard about it. Alejandro told me everything.” She directed him
to the couch and they sat.
“There
had to have been something else I could have done. I fell like such
an imbecile. He came to her funeral. He embraced me as though we
were friends. He killed Refugio. He had a child who needed his
father. He destroyed their lives.”
Rosario
put her hand on his shoulder. “Don't torment yourself, Dimitrio.
You did the right thing. You had to do it.”
“I
so wanted to kill him. And the worst was that when I did it I felt
like I was dying.”
“Because
you are not a criminal. You were nothing like him.”
“I
killed Adolfo on the day of his wedding to Josefina.”
“Now
Josefina needs you more than ever. Don't abandon her, Dimitrio.
Tell her what you told me. I'm sure she'll understand your reasons.”
“I
can't tell Josefina and Nadia. They will hate me.”
“They
won't hate you.”
“Of
course they will. Because I intended this. I knew what was
happening. They will have the right to hate me. I swore I would
catch the Scorpion when I found Mónica dead on the floor.”
Rosario
said no more. She stroked his hair and his shoulder as though he
were her own son. He said nothing, but was grateful.
Peralta
House: Macario and Kevin came home. Dominga was happy, calling
him “son.” Dominga begged Kevin never to do this again. She
even told him to come to her if his father ever became that stupid
again. That was a guarantee they'd be close.
Valverde
House: Monserrat took Victoria to Esmeralda's apartment so she
could be with her children.
Josefina walked in with blood stains on
her wedding dress. She was in tears. She knelt on the floor saying
“Nadia, forgive me. I couldn't do anything to stop it.”
“My
brother. My dear brother,” Nadia said. She and Nadia embraced and
both cried.
Victor watched them silently. For that moment he was
grateful that Nadia couldn't see her brother's blood.
Solares
House: José Luis arrived to tell Esmeralda what happened.
“Let's
just say that The Scorpion won't hurt anyone else.”
“Good.
I want to look into the face of the man that killed my husband.”
“Why?”
“Please,
José Luis, don't you understand? I want to tell him to his face
that thanks to him Angel will have to go on without his father. I
need to look him in the eye and see who is The Scorpion.”
“Esmeralda,
The Scorpion is dead. And believe me, that guy died sorry for
everything he did.”
“Please,
José Luis, that doesn't matter to me. I don't believe in his
remorse. Did he know who Mónica was when he killed her? More, who
was Refugio and me? Or my son, or anyone?”
He
looked away for a moment. “He knew, Esmeralda.”
“I
don't understand.”
“The
Scorpion knew what would hurt Dimitrio, you, everyone. He knew
perfectly well.”
“No.
Who was The Scorpion? Who?”
“Nadia's
brother. Adolfo Argüelles.”
“No,
no! How perverse! No, no!” She paced around, looking in all
directions. She couldn't quite believe it. “No. Adolfo was here!
He embraced me! He consoled me!” She looked as though she would
scream. “How disgusting! Just a few days before Refugio had been
holding me!”
Valverde
House: Josefina tried to explain her feelings to Nadia. It was
not easy for either of them. She lamented her innocence and how good
she had thought Adolfo was.
“Adolfo
loved you, Josefina. You were the love of his life. I am sure of
this.”
“I
want to remember him as the man who loved me. Who made me see heaven
with his words. I felt like the most beautiful and important woman
when he held me in his arms. Now when I look back and see the times
he kissed me I realize he was a killer.”
“No,
no. Josefina, when my brother was with you he was Adolfo. The man
who fought for my happiness and that of my daughter. Neither you nor
I knew The Scorpion. Adolfo loved us and I'm sure he lived his life
trying to protect us.”
The
doorbell rang and Victor brought Father Anselmo into the room. The
old priest kissed Nadia and said “I can imagine how you feel, but
I'm here to bring a little peace to your souls.”
“You
knew, Father. That's why you wouldn't marry us in the church.”
“Yes,
daughter. Yes. Adolfo finally found the peace he needed so much.
You don't know about the times he came to me broken and crying.
Regretting his actions and looking for a way out of the torment he
lived in.”
Almonte
House: Dimitrio had come back with Rosario. He was in his
mother's room. He sat on the floor with his back to the sofa, facing
his mother's bed.
“Please,
don't keep thinking about this. You did what you had to do to stop
that killer. I knew Adolfo took the wrong path. When he began
working for Pedro Medina it was logical to suspect so. He told me it
was Maria who killed Sandro Narváez in this very house. Your sister
was desperate so I called Pedro for help. He sent Adolfo to clean up
the crime scene.”
“Why
didn't you tell me?” Dimitrio asked.
“Out
of fear, Dimitrio. Adolfo threatened me with a pistol. He broke
into my bedroom trying to get Benjamin Almonte's will from me.
Adolfo was one of Pedro's men. I had to take that into account. You
know that, Dimitrio.”
“It
can't be. He deceived us all. To my face.” Gracie nodded in
acknowledgment of his words. “He even stayed in my home. I can't
believe I missed something that obvious all that time.”
“I
know. But you can't keep tormenting yourself like this. You never
listen to me. I know lots of things hurt you, love. I am proud of
you because you are the person you are partly thanks to me.” He
looked up at her.
He stared in suspicion. “In contrast, your
friend never listened to his mother and Pedro ended his life.”
Dimitrio
said nothing. He was trying to swallow this bullshit.
Valverde
House: Father Anselmo told the ladies about how Pretty Boy had
almost once killed him. Nadia hugged herself as she listened.
“I
was The Scorpion's first victim, daughters.”
“My
brother tried to kill you, Father?”
“Yes,
daughter, yes. Your brother, enslaved by Pedro Medina, was ordered
to kill me but he couldn't do it. I couldn't see in that moment how
he could be made to be a killer. But, disgracefully, Ezekiel arrived
and kidnapped me. I was drugged for a long time. He used all the
weapons he had; above all, Adolfo. And finally when he let me come
back to Aguazul it was too late to save him. Adolfo had been
transformed into The Scorpion. There was nothing I or anyone else
could do. His hands were soaked in blood.”
Almonte
House: Alejandro and Monserrat returned with the three children.
Rosario told them that Dimitrio was in the house. Lauro and Victoria
went to her side.
“Where
is he?” asked Monserrat.
“He's
in with your mother.”
Monserrat
handed Romina to Rosario and went to her mother's room. Alejandro
stayed in the living room with his mother and the kids.
Gracie
was sitting on the couch. Dimitrio was still sitting on the floor.
“Come
here, love,” she said to her daughter. “Your brother needs a lot
of help and I think you also need a hug.”
Monserrat
sat at her mother's feet near her tormented brother. Gracie pulled
her as close as she could. “I want you to know that I love you
with all my soul. I love you to my last breath.”
“I
don't want to lose you, Mother,” said Dimitrio.
“Neither
do I,” said Monserrat. “I don't want you to die, Mother.”
“It
will be alright,” Gracie said. “You know what? I've always
believed in miracles. God is just and he has great love for us. You
need me right now as your mother.”
She
kissed their foreheads. Dimitrio stared away. He may or may not
have realized the true meaning of her words.
Dear
Friends,
Here
is where I say goodbye to Aguazul. It's a pretty little town with
lots of sunshine. Citizens aren't too bright by comparison, though.
A perfect place for evil narcos to hide.
Pretty
Boy Argüelles is dead. I think
these days they call this Suicide By Cop. Things are finally
happening to put Pedro Medina where he belongs. In the slammer or in
Hell, it won't matter which; Aguazul will get relief soon. Somebody
is on Pedro Medina's tail.
I've
been called back to the mean streets up north. If you ever need my
help again, just whistle. You know how, don't you? Just put your
lips together and blow.

Another one bites the dust. I had other ideas for the titles to this last capitulo of mine for this series, but I chose this one because there were three lost boys here:
ReplyDeleteAdolfo. Wish I'd called him Pretty Boy Arguelles in the first place. He had no way back.
Dimitrio. Lost in his plan for revenge and emotionally devastated when he got it. It'll be tough, but I think he'll make it eventually.
Kevin. Emotionally ignored by Macario, who has to have had something wrong with him to do that. At least he has Dominga.
How sad for Dimitrio, he killed the man he was after and he still can't find peace.
ReplyDeleteUrban, thank you for such an outstanding recap of this dramatic episode.
ReplyDeleteMacario sure deserved the slap. That whole subplot was almost comic relief with all that went down in Aguazul.
Wow! Pedro continues to ratchet up his vileness and disdain for everyone with each episode. Couldn't believe it when he kicked Adolfo out to his doom.
I liked Dimitio's reaction to having killed Adolfo when he said that he himself felt like he was dying when he shot Adolfo. It was realistic. There was no celebrating.
Well, all I can wonder is if Dimitrio was angry that Adolfo had deceived him, how is he going to feel when he finds out how his own mother has deceived him especially after she wheedled him into saying that he did not want to lose her. When Graciela said to Montse that she needed one of her hugs, it was absolutely sickening.
From the avances it looks like Pedro will be providing a lot of action from here to the end. Damsel in distress?
Jarifa
Oh, oh ... Graciela believes in miracles! Could we be in for the wonderful treat of her miraculous recovery soon? (Mere speculation)
ReplyDeleteFabulous recap, Urban, with an excellent array of screen shots. A smooth and cool recount of some heartbreaking action.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that Padre Anselmo brought a degree of closure for PBN and Finita. Dimitrio looked totally depleted. He has done a stellar acting job here, as did Adolfo.
Loved the farewell note from Dashiell Hammett. And I was pleased that knothead Macario was able to catch his son before the bus left town. Dominga's slap was quite satisfying.
Urban, this is your Aqua Azul masterpiece. Your most powerful work you saved for the very end. The still shots were beautiful and so perfect, but none as perfect as my fave couple, Bogey and Bacall. It was beautiful, Urban. I SO hope that you will get to write in this style again. You have found yet another writing voice.
ReplyDeleteGaudencia...planning and refining her ultimate con, but the truth simply has to come out. It has to and I can't wait to see how it plays out.
Fatima
My my my, so many guns around town and so few brains!
ReplyDeleteUrban A, thank you for this excellent recap and for all your well-crafted recaps. You went above and beyond tonight with your screen caps and pictures. I have really enjoyed your film noir-themed recaps, one of my favorite genres. Pretty Boy Arguelles is the perfect name for Fofito. Your title is great, very appropriate.
You really captured Pedro when you said "He grinned like a mad scientist in a bad movie." Yes!!! Uni deleted Pedro's comment about Fofito being his balls. I was wondering what he said. Thank you.
Kudos to Dominga. I love how she gets right to the point (unlike every other telenovela character), when she told Macario not to return without Kevin.
Graciela and a miracle? Bah!
You obviously spent a lot of time and effort on this recap and it is much appreciated.
Urban, this was masterful. There were so many heartbreaking scenes but none more than Josefina begging Nadia to forgive her for not be able to prevent Adolfo's death. I often wondered if Josefina really was in love with Adolfo. Indeed she was.
ReplyDeleteSo Gracie is expecting a "miracle"? When the truth comes out about her fakery it will be a miracle if either Montse or Dimitrio ever forgives her. I can't escape the feeling that Gracie is in league with Pedro somehow. I still think she and Pedro may be siblings. Two peas from a very rotten pod.
I was laughing so hard when Pedro said that Adolfo is his second balls,it seems that he got the Second Castracion,Ay Pobre Diablo:) It was sad seeing Adolfo die and to see Dim completely devastated. The Esme scene was painful too.I hated the Graciela scene she is such a w(b)itch ,i wish lighting would hit her in her bulby head, she sure is Sick In The Head but not by a tumour, its something else, its her Apathy!
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved the potential of the grounds where Pedro was hiding and where all of the action took place.
Sure, it's a fixer upper but properties like that do not come on the market that often.
I wonder who has the listing?
Urban:
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this very stellar recap. I too liked the film noir recapping style you did here. I hope you have another opportunity to use it again.
I really think Addled really did love Fina. Besides Nadia and Victoria I think he really loved Fina the most. He always thought she would be able to save him but in the end she couldn't. Addled death was suicide by cop so to speak. I can see why Dimi hurt so badly after wards. These two guys had been friends since they were little, but by the Grace of Dios, Dimi could have turned out like him, but took the high road.
Esme's scene with JL was very painful, as was Nadia's and Fina's later. I cried along with them.
I too loved that slap Domi gave Mac, it's about time. I like what Kevin told Mac too. Good for him. Domi has turned into a great Mama I have to say.
Thanks again Urban for the all sparkling, recaps you gave us week after week during this long TN.
You're all welcome. I truly wish that Televisa would do a noirish novela someday. I'd love to see Jorge Salinas in a trench coat and fedora driving an 1950s car. Not to mention Silvia Navarro in 1950s evening gowns and jewels.
ReplyDeleteIt occurred to me after I shut down the computer last night that the Navy should provide a shrink for Dimitrio to help him get through this. We haven't yet seen his current commanding officer but there should be acknowledgment of the unusual nature of this situation.
How was the omission of Pedro's line done? Was the footage cut or just the word blipped out?
Yeah Urban,i wonder where Dimitrios superior/ The Admiral is ., And who the hell is now the Governor and The Mayor of Aguazul? Ezequel is dead and Pedro is a fugitive so there must be some replacement for them.It pains me they are not doing anything to help with the situation:(
ReplyDeleteUrban, the scene was there, they just cut the word "testículos."
ReplyDeleteJarifa
An absolute classic Urban. You outdid yourself with the imagery and descriptions. A masterpiece to send us out with. Thanks for all your wonderful efforts, going to miss Dashiell.
ReplyDeleteI didn't really feel for Adolfo anymore. He had become more and more delusional in his thinking that somehow he could just walk away and never deal with the murders he committed. No wonder he always felt for Maria, there was a lot of her in him as well.
I loved Fina's response to him.
So now his story is ended, and ironically he has destroyed several more lives, especially Fina and Dimitrio. I see no "walk into the sunset" with these two, but I hope Rosario's advice to talk to her and they could help each other is listened to. Adolfo deceived them both, but they did care for him and it makes his betrayal all the worse.
Loved the first person Dim needed and called was Rosario. And how perfect that Gaudy takes the credit and coerces her children further to claim they need her. Let the emotional blackmail continue. Won't be pretty when they discover her betrayal.
Daisynjay
I guess Pedro got castrated yet again but this time it was not by a car accident but because of censorship, poor Pedro i feel for him. How cruel it be that you lose your testicles the first time in an accident and later losing them due to censors,it is a crime against his non-existant humanity!
ReplyDeleteOk, Urban, you had me at "Freud would have loved watching this. He would have enjoyed seeing a man being rocked in a chair by someone else as he sucked on his adult pacifier."
ReplyDeleteThank you for your faithful and quality recapping.
Loved your last pictures and Dashiell's letter.
I didn't even watch the episode, no time, your recap was better, I'm certain.
This was a powerful episode, and you provided the perfect recap for it, Urban. You also included some fab screen shots.
ReplyDeleteI hope Dim follows Rosie's advice and goes to see Fina, just like she was there for him after Monica was killed. There is no way that she hates him, and she was also deceived and betrayed by Adolfo.
Loved the slap Domi gave Mac, and how fierce she was about calling Kevin her son.
ReplyDeleteI also thought it very telling that Dimitrio called Rosario for help. Despite her losing so many years of motherhood she is far better at it than his own mother.
I'm also wondering whether it would have made any difference had Pretty Boy ever found out he was employed by a eunuch. Would he have killed Pedro much earlier? Of course, that would have killed at least 50 capitulos.
Urban, this was breathtakingly lovely. Beautifully recounted and detailed to perfection. Your screen shots were excellent and told a story in and of themselves. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication all these many months.
ReplyDelete"He grinned like a mad scientist in a bad movie"; “One of his thugs rocked the chair so his boss wouldn't have to” (extremely unsettling) “He would have enjoyed seeing a man being rocked in a chair by someone else as he sucked on his adult pacifier. Except that nothing pacified Pedro Medina” were all extraordinary.
Eli your "How sad for Dimitrio, he killed the man he was after and he still can't find peace" reflected the pain and anguish Dimitrio will now have to live with.
The actors were sensational last night. All. Adolfo left us knowing he would be in a better place.
"Kevin isn't your son!” Oh Macario, what an oxygen waster (credit to whomever coined that). Dominga, you did not hit Macario hard enough. It would take a far harder blow to knock any sense into his non-functioning brain. Dolt. Agree Sylvia, at least one character here (Dominga) is unafraid to tell it like it is.
Xintperuvian, I, like you “often wondered if Josefina really was in love with Adolfo. And “Indeed she was”. So unbearably sad.
Will comment more later - late for a meeting.
Diana
Urban
ReplyDeleteYour recap was absolutely fabulous. I have so much to comment and not enough time. My previous comment was lost by google.
I'll check back in later.
"The actors were sensational last night."
ReplyDeleteI had to fly this morning, but wanted to also note this as well. Diana you said it simply and perfectly. I love when the "secondary" characters in a TN just shine and the actors are strong, their stories often less predictable and interesting than the supposed main characters. I thought it fitting, and wonderful, that the main threesome of Monse, Ale and JL were there mainly as support.
The car, on the other hand, well it just had to have it's moment---I'm sorry, in the midst of this tragic telling we get to enjoy the speed, clean lines and comfy interior of Ale's truck. Spare me, but it did make me smile for two seconds before the awfulness that ensued.
Daisynjay
I agree that it WAS telling that Dimitrio called Rosario. I was glad that he did it instead of sitting there by himself. How wonderful that in the midst of his pain, he (a man, no less) thought to call a wonderful woman to give him support and strength. That was a beautiful scene. As painful as so many scenes were last night, the acting was absolutely first rate; absolutely first rate.
ReplyDeleteI cried when little Victoria said good bye to Adolfo and I especially cried during the final scenes when we lost Adolfo.
Honestly, it was a jarring jolt to go from those poignant scenes to Gaudencia and her further manipulation of her children. Dimitrio's face tells me that he is still not 100% buying what Gaudencia is selling.
Looks like they are saving the truth about who Gaudencia really is as a human being until the very end.
I am so glad that things are wrapping up day by day and not in the final two hours. At least they have given us that much.
I wonder what roles the Adolfo actor will get now. He has come a long way from his role in CME. He does look beautiful in that sleek, slick black hair and a white suit. I still think, though, that Juan Soler is THE MAN when it comes to wearing suits, but Adolfo comes in a close second.
Was it my imagination, but did they deliberately do a close up of the Texas license plates on The Tundra last night?! Every time I get a gander at the truck's interior, I get more and more interested in that truck!
Fatima
By the way,my comment about being a man and calling for help was not meant to be disparaging in any way. It's just that I haven't known too many men to call and ask for support at a time when they need it most. So, I was happy to see that Dimi had called Rosario. This is now the second time that he has deliberately gone to her for help and support (Monica's funeral being the first public display of his feelings).
ReplyDeleteDaisynjay, I see we were thinking the same thing about The Tundra!!
Fatima
Urban, thank you so much for your hard work and dedication to this very, very long novela. I appreciate you and also every other recapper who has put so much into LQLVMR.
ReplyDeleteThis has got to be the saddest novela I have ever watched, as well as the best acted.
Ferdinando did such a superb job portraying a young man who gets caught up in a bad situation which slowly poisons him and takes him beyond redemption. Pretty much everything he did was believable. At first I thought he had another gun behind his back in the final scene and was really shocked to see that he took the clip out of his gun. How sad. How inevitable was his ending. How well written. Wow, just wow.
UA...Thanks for a wonderful finale to your always excellent recapping. I appreciate the time and effort that you devote to each and every recap.
ReplyDeleteFatima..I agree with you that many men do not reach out fir help when they need it. Rosario is an earth mother. She is open and willing to nurture anyone who needs her embrace and love and wisdom. She gives so generously and unselfishly of herself , so I am sure that she will always be surrounded by loved ones.
Hmmmm...while I am on the topic of mothers, .are we now sure that Grrrrrr is faking it until she makes her children love her ??? Love me..dammit !!!!! I saw a quote yesterday that made me instantly think of our dear gracious Grrr. "Be the kind of woman who when your feet hit the floor in the A.M., the devil says, "Crap, she's up !"
Pobrecito Adolfo, we all knew that white coat and Fina's lovely white gown were going to be covered in blood. Live by the sword; die by the sword. We all make decisions that firm our fates, and Fofo just kept making one bad decision after the other. Some people are their own worst enemies...Including people in real life and many of these characters.
P.s. Please writers, No Zombiemaria popping up. We have all suffered enough at this point . I am enjoying picturing her in hades toasting marshmallows while Uncle Pervje combs her hair.
There honestly have been times in this tale when I thought that it will end with Pedro morphing into Satan himself before finally being consumed in flames. This would need to happen before the eyes of Alejandro, Monserrat, and Jose Luis so that none of them could doubt that Pedro ended up where he belongs and they could get back to living well.
ReplyDeleteI also wonder whether it would be better for Pedro to die at the end rather than end up in prison. That would be for the others' sake so they wouldn't have to look over their shoulders for the rest of their lives.
Thank you for such an awesome recap!
ReplyDeleteWho would have thought at the beginning of this TN that Adolfo and Dimitrio would become the characters I find the most interesting and care about the most? I'm heartbroken for them both. I really can't see Dim and Fina getting back together now. Sometimes there is just too much baggage to surmount.
Urban,
ReplyDeleteBeautifully written as always.
I still cannot believe all the hours you dedicate to recapping, although it is most evident.
I especially like what you said about Dimitrio getting counseling. This should be routinely provided by the upper echelon.
Another theme of misunderstanding continues: Dimitrio does not realize that Fina still loves him, and now he thinks she hates him.
I hope these two beautiful, sensitive people are reunited in a deep true love that will carry them into a fulfilling future on this earth.
Dim is unaware of Fina's conversation with Adolfo before he headed out to his death. I was horrified but also glad that Fina could see a touch of Adolfo's
self centered, physical cruelty which led him to commit his senseless crimes.
Fina emphasized that she did not want the father of her children to be a killer. I hope that she does not see Dimitrio in that light.
She missed the first part of their encounter where Dim tried to work it out with fisticuffs.
I was glad that she saw Adolfo about to shoot Dimitrio, and glad that A. heeded her warning.
I like the image of Jorge Salinas as you described. He has a very special macho charisma.
Thanks to all for entertaining and insightful comments.
Urban,
ReplyDeleteThis was lost in the above:
Recapper Extraordinaire, and with those screen shots you have recorded a permanent visual summary of the novela.
Graciela commented that she believes in miracles. Could it be that she is soon to be miraculously cured
of her paralysis?
Carvivlie: I agree that Adolfo and Dimitrio have been mesmerizing. They have both taken fateful journies, Adolfo's finally at an end.
ReplyDeleteFloridia, I had thought that there might be a chance for Fina and Adolfo. I was sad that Dimitrio ended up being the one to kill Adolfo. I suspect this may be something neither Dimitrio nor Fina can get past. While I wish it were love that would unite them, their unbearable grief may be the catalyst that at long last binds them.
Diana
Geez, I meant there might have been a chance for Fina and Dimitrio.
ReplyDeleteDiana
Urban Anthropologist, thank you so much for this recap (as well as all your previous ones). Love the screen caps! Great shots of raw emotion.
ReplyDelete"Pretty Boy Argüelles paced. Pedro Medina sat in his rocking chair, smoking a cigar. One of his thugs rocked the chair so his boss wouldn't have to. It was impossible to tell what he was thinking as he watched his boss. Freud would have loved watching this. He would have enjoyed seeing a man being rocked in a chair by someone else as he sucked on his adult pacifier. Except that nothing pacified Pedro Medina." Urban, you verbally captured that scene splendidly! When I saw that scene last night I almost fell over! Speaking of characters needing a psychiatrist - Pedro would need a team of the best of the best. The writers could possibly write a thriller based on his back story. Just imagine what his childhood was like to get him to this point. *Shudder*
"Pobrecito Adolfo, we all knew that white coat and Fina's lovely white gown were going to be covered in blood. Live by the sword; die by the sword. We all make decisions that firm our fates, and Fofo just kept making one bad decision after the other. Some people are their own worst enemies...Including people in real life and many of these characters. " Susanlynn, very well said. I couldn't agree more.
Not much time for any additional comments from me.
More drama tonight I guess.
Caryn
Oh, I forgot! I am stopping by the "Gracie is faking it" table to have a shot of tequila with you. I need a shot after what Gracie said last night about miracles. Ugh!
ReplyDeleteCaryn
I sometimes have gotten unnerved about the forced endings in some TN's--trying to give drama and angst and then make everything all right at the end.
ReplyDeleteIf there is one thing I can take away from all the hours of watching this show, and now down to it's final days, this is NOT going to be TN where the plots are all wrapped up in a pretty pink ribbon and everyone is coupled up and smiling at the end. Seems everyone in this show as somehow experienced being to their own hell and back...this may be more a story of survival and moving on than any happy endings. Perhaps depressing, but as pointed out, so much more realistic.
I'm just a bit worried on how the last two remaining baddies will end their stories and who they hurt in going down.
Daisynjay
so many tears I cried last night! adolfo begging Fina, adolfo getting his wish and dying, Fina understanding his dilemma while holding his lifeless body, Fina dropping to her knees in front of Nadia with Adolfo's blood on her dress... oh my! more tears to come i'm sure.
ReplyDeleteam I the only one that noticed that when Dimi was first in his mother's room he was facing her in her bed but when Montse came in, Gaudy was on the couch next to Dimi who didn't look like he had moved? how did she get from the bed to the couch? did Dimi move her and sit back down on the floor in the same place? with everything on his mind and heart, what would be the point of that? suspicious I say...
thanks for the recap! whoever was doing the English closed captioning last night wasn't keeping up with the actors as they spoke, so some of the weight of what was being said was lost. i can't have sloppy CC during ultimos capitulos! but I knew I could come here and get what I missed.
-obsessed
Obsessed:
ReplyDeleteSo glad to see you back! Good catch on the movement of Guady. I didn't even notice, she floored me when she was talking about miracles!
What I want to know is, why didn't Dimi call her out about having the will of Benny? I know he asked her why she never mentioned that Fofito had pulled a gun on her to get said will. Or did I miss something somewhere?
obsessed, I noticed that about Graciela too. I just assumed it was bad continuity on the set.
ReplyDeleteDaisynjay, about Pedro's last days, I fear for the children the most. I hope he ends up in Hades instead of la cárcel. A living Pedro is still a threat.
I hope Dimi and Finita can communicate honestly and realize one of their common bonds is that they were both horribly duped by Adolfo.
When Dimi said last night he thought that Fina would hate him after what he'd done, the first thought that came to my mind was there is a thin line between love and hate. I really don't think Fina will hate Dimi, she saw what happened. The only thing I didn't like that Dimi said was when he told Fina, and it seemed sarcastic to me, Sorry I ruined your wedding, and then he left! It would have been enough for him to tell her he was sorry.
ReplyDeleteDimitrio doesn't seem to have had a chance to process all this yet. Something may occur to him yet about the will and Gracie could probably get away with saying that she found it in the chapel where Maria had hidden it.
ReplyDeleteWhat did bother me was: How did Gracie get from her bed to the sofa, especially when we didn't see the wheelchair anywhere to the right of the sofa when Monserrat entered the room? It would not seem logical for Dimitrio to get up, help her into the chair, wheel her to the sofa, help her out of the chair, and sit back on the floor. It would have made more sense for him to get up and sit on the side of the bed.
No way would she have taken the risk of deliberately slipping out of bed and crawling to the sofa. Since she probably hasn't slapped too many people lately she wouldn't have the upper body strength to do that. Televisa needs to realize that people look for stuff like that.
Of all our villains, I think Adolfo (who was more of a gray character) caused the most permanent damage with the combination of his murders and his betrayals of his friends and family. Fina, Nadia, Victoria, Dim, and Esme (and Angel). All of them received severe and forever lasting wounds to their souls and hearts as a result of Adolfo's actions. It played out over and again last night.
ReplyDeleteI just assumed Dim brought Gracie over to the couch off-screen (likely at her insistence) and then went back to his previous sad position on the floor.
ReplyDeleteMads- I also hated the sarcastic way Dim said that to Fina. That was probably the only sour note in the episode for me. I don't know why the writers did it.
UA: Thanks for the great recap. Really appreciate the crucial scenes’ dialogue translations. I don’t have to say adiós to you since you’re also recapping MCET.
ReplyDeleteCount me in. Gracie is faking it. Here’s what convinced me:
“I don't want to lose you, Mother,” said Dimitrio.
“Neither do I,” said Monserrat. “I don't want you to die, Mother.”
“It will be alright,” Gracie said. “You know what? I've always believed in miracles. God is just and he has great love for us. You need me right now as your mother.”
She’s finally got what she schemed for—her children’s love back.
Does she know that Dimitrio called Rosario for comfort?
How long has Monica been dead?
Nanette
True, but I think Nadia will eventually get over it. She knew her brother was a sucker for easy money and no real work and will realize that Pedro was too clever by half in how he exploited that.
ReplyDeleteI agree strongly with an earlier comment that a living Pedro is an ongoing threat no matter where he is. He has made numerous promises he never kept. He makes all these people turn against each other. Like a latter-day mad Roman emperor putting them all in an arena with delusions and weapons.
Adolfo was one of the dimmest bulbs in the chandelier. Pedro deluded him further with dreams of more money in a faraway place. He then deliberately kicked Adolfo out of the copter knowing that Dimitrio would kill him and live with that for the rest of his life... or until the day he could delude Dimitrio into doing something to hurt Monserrat, Alejandro, or their children, which would be even more sadistic.
I know this would be unlikely, but I'd love to see Pedro fall into the hands of a group of mad scientists who would do experiments on him.
Urban - Excellent recap. Some of my favorite lines:
ReplyDeleteShe [Dominga] even told him [Kevin] to come to her if his father ever became that stupid again. That was a guarantee they'd be close. - lol
Things are finally happening to put Pedro Medina where he belongs. In the slammer or in Hell, it won't matter which; Aguazul will get relief soon.
I don't think I've ever seen a TN where an evildoer finds redemption in prison and comes out a reformed man, though surely it must happen in Mexican prisons as it does for some in U.S. prisons. Adolfo was weak, but perhaps he had more guts than he knew to remake himself in prison.
I’m guessing Macario, who is normally a good man, is acting like a nitwit with Kevin because he feels guilty about the boy growing up without his support all those years, even though he didn't know the boy existed. Maybe in Macario's warped logic if the boy is not really his or is a shiftless thief, he doesn't have to feel so guilty. Loved when Dominga told Mac, that if anybody's leaving it will be him. Glad her thwack! brought Mac back to his senses.
Urban - Another favorite:
ReplyDeleteVictor watched them [Nadia and Fina] silently. For that moment he was grateful that Nadia couldn't see her brother’s blood.
I might begin writing my fanovela soon,it would include 3 Special People( I wont reveal them yet!) and it would be based on revenge, repentance and might also deal with loneliness. I am not a very good script writer but it doesnt hurt to try,i might begin writing when Robo ends and while Hasta El Fin Del Mundo is airing.I think around 60/70 episodes could be enough:)
ReplyDeleteUA--You have done such an outstanding job recapping this novela. For that reason alone, I am sad to see this story end.
ReplyDelete"He thought back to her funeral. Adolfo had been there conveying condolences. He had looked him in the eye. They had embraced. Adolfo's act had taken him for the worst ride of his life. He got up and loaded his pistol. He tucked it into the back of his trousers. His cell phone rang. “What do you want? You know who the Scorpion is? I'll be there.” He ended the call and ran out, pulling out his shirttail to cover the gun."
That paragraph illustrates what I love about your writing style in this one.Crisp, clean sentences. Staccato beat. Moving the story along rapidly. Just enough. And just perfect.
You have turned yourself inside out, week after week, giving us pictures, detailed resumés, and lots of your own reactions and speculations regarding the story.
Thank you for the generosity of your time and talent. You have gifted us all.
Maricruz
ReplyDeleteWhen I heard Graciela say the word milagro, please know that I was toasting you! You were the first to recognize she was faking it!
Well done!
"The only thing I didn't like that Dimi said was when he told Fina, and it seemed sarcastic to me, Sorry I ruined your wedding, and then he left! It would have been enough for him to tell her he was sorry." Mads and Vivi, I'm with you. This line was all wrong for the circumstances. It reminded me of one of Arnold's lines from The Terminator movies: "I'll be back", "Have a nice day", Hasta La Vista, Baby."
ReplyDeleteNobody seemed to notice that Adolfo's gun was not loaded. When he pulled the clip out he kept it in his other hand, it should have fallen on the ground next to his body. Will the writers leave that detail behind or will Dim have even more anguish when he finds out he shot an essentially unarmed man?
Did anyone else think it was bizarre when Ale, Fina and Montse found JL on the ground and when they discovered he was simply unconscious they all just ran away and left him there?
It seemed no one noted the clip on the ground, but I was wondering if perhaps JL may have noticed since he was the one who looked to stay behind while the police came. I don't think it served a purpose to say anything...if anyone understands revenge and hurt, it would be him, and I don't think he would want to put Dim in the light of someone who shot an unarmed man. The Fool looked to be armed, enough.
ReplyDeleteAs for the parting words to Fina, I took it that was almost a knee-jerk reaction to the fact that he felt Fina dumped him to be with Adolfo even though he, Dim, still wanted her. Failed to remember that those two have been dancing around that for months and never really did TALK about it. He was betrayed by his best friend, and not knowing what really went down with The Fool and Fina, it was a but of a dig that she had chosen the murderer over him. Not cool, but in the heat of his thought processes, I get where his mind was at. That may be why later he was so remorseful to Rosario, realizing he screwed up and she won't want to deal with him.
Daisynjay
Did anyone else think it was bizarre when Ale, Fina and Montse found JL on the ground and when they discovered he was simply unconscious they all just ran away and left him there?
ReplyDeletexlnt, geez I've got my fingers crossed that JL doesn't take note that they just left him there unconscious. It could start him up again about how insensitive the golden couple has been to his feelings. :D
Seriously, I'm glad JL is still with us.
Urban---Fatima said that this was a Aqua Azul masterpiece. Daisynjay
ReplyDeletecalled your recap detailed to perfection. Floridia stated that you were a recapper extraordinaire
All three are right on so I will just second those and add that your many hours of recapping are deeply appreciated. THANK YOU.
The Scorpion is no more. The three
ladies filled with grief all for different reasons played their parts exceptionally well last night. However, in my opinion I feel that Margarita Magana the actress that is playing Esmeralda
hit it out of the park. Oscar potential for sure. That girl can really bring it on.
A side note---Most everyone is calling Adolfo's death murder by cop because he took the clip out of his gun. But---the gun most certainly would have been cocked and ready to fire, so even if he took the clip out [which he did] there would still have been one bullet left in the chamber and so he would have had one shot available if he chose to use it.
An interesting point was that after Adolfo had been shot and lay on the ground dying, no one noticed that the clip was not in the gun. Interesting that two police officers were there as well
as Alejandro but no one noticed.
Oxnard Huero---A fixer upper but great property. Who has the listing? You made me laugh. For the last couple of days I have been listening to some female Latin Pop cd's and dvd's. They are so good that they make me want to move to Mexico. Maybe we could go half and half on the property.
Question---Why did Pedro throw Adolfo out of the helicopter? Was
it because he didn't need the Scorpion hit man anymore or was it because he didn't trust him because Adolfo had said that he wanted out?
Oh yes---Little Victoria did a fine job last night also.
the gringo
That is the oddest bromance I've ever encountered, that of Pedro and Adolfo.
ReplyDelete" You are my testiculos". Seriously, dude?
That sentiment is quite similar to that of this famous song.
Just substitute you are my testiculos for wind beneath my wings.
"Wind Beneath My Wings"
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
It must have been cold there in my shadow,
to never have sunlight on your face.
You were content to let me shine, that's your way.
You always walked a step behind.
So I was the one with all the glory,
while you were the one with all the strength.
A beautiful face without a name for so long.
A beautiful smile to hide the pain.
Did you ever know that you're my hero,
and everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
'cause you are the wind beneath my wings.
It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
but I've got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it.
I would be nothing without you.
Did you ever know that you're my hero?
You're everything I wish I could be.
I could fly higher than an eagle,
'cause you are the wind beneath my wings.
Did I ever tell you you're my hero?
You're everything, everything I wish I could be.
Oh, and I, I could fly higher than an eagle,
'cause you are the wind beneath my wings,
'cause you are the wind beneath my wings.
Oh, the wind beneath my wings.
You, you, you, you are the wind beneath my wings.
Fly, fly, fly away. You let me fly so high.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.
Fly, fly, fly high against the sky,
so high I almost touch the sky.
Thank you, thank you,
thank God for you, the wind beneath my wings.
I'm sure once the body is moved, JL will find the clip underneath Adolfo and know that Adolfo's last act was honorable. JL knew better than anyone that Adolfo wanted to die, after his speech at Refugio's grave.
ReplyDeletegringo, a small correction, UA and Madelaine called Adolfo's death suicide by cop. There is a difference and I hope it is one that Dim can be made to see.
ReplyDeleteGringo- It was never Pedro's plan to take Adolfo with him on the helicopter. He WANTED Adolfo to die at the hands of his friends/family and/or kill them (increasing his personal hell). That's why Pedro made all those calls to folks letting them know exactly where Adolfo was.
ReplyDeleteWhen the trio encountered JL on the ground, Ale checked him and told them to stay behind. Then Josefina ran off and he ran after her, but he told Montse to stay with Jose Luis, which she didn't, of course. Ale didn't mean to just run off and just leave JL alone on the ground.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recap. Since it's the last week I'll try to comment on the remaining episodes.
ReplyDeletePoor Adolfito. He was a troubled soul. He tried to be good but El Alacran was his ultimate demise. I too was a little perplexed by Dim's indifference towards Fina: "Sorry I ruined your wedding" and then walking away. I guess he had to do what he had to do, but he set out to get revenge.
Nanette, I think Monica has been dead for at least two years. She died before Fabiola did and a whole year passed after Fabiola's death so I'd guess at least a year and a half to two years is the likely answer.
Honestly I believe that the fact that Montse and Dim are so nice to Gracie is going to come back and bite them. I think they're going to soon realize who their mother truly is.
I gotta feel bad for Esme. Her reaction to finding out the identity of El Alacran was probably the most accurate. While everyone else seemed sad and disappointed, she was rightfully disgusted.

I don't think JL was left alone. Montse stayed with him and then you could see them both together standing, in the distance behind Fina, when she is trying to get the boys to stop.
ReplyDeleteCarvivilie- I saw the scene the way you did. Monse and JL caught up to the others after he woke up, but she stayed with him till then.
ReplyDeleteTF: thanks.
ReplyDeleteCapt'n Sylvia---suicide by cop. Correction acknowledged but he still had one bullet if he chose to use it, he didn't so yes, he wanted to end it all and check out for good.
ReplyDeletethe gringo
To all of you who thought that Dim's remark to Fina about ruining her wedding was rude, sarcastic or inappropriate, I didn't take it that way at all.
ReplyDelete1. Dim was wrapped up in his anger to get revenge and he was first on the scene to stop Adolfo and made sure that JL did not interfere. That was his total mindset.
2. He had no knowledge of the conversation between Adolfo and Fina where she made the decision to stop the wedding For all Dim knew, the wedding was to go on as scheduled, and he was the one who stopped it.
3. When he say Fina devastated, he thought she was in that condition primarily because the wedding did not take place.
4. We learned that he was not happy after getting his revenge,
and part of that was seeing Fina so disconsolate. He was truly feeling sorry for her, and for a long time, he thought she liked Adolfo when she hadn't yet formed an attachment.
5. I categorize Dim's remark more along the lines of the title,
Lost Boy. In the heat of the moment, the remark came off as awkward as if from a teenager, but I believe it was sincere. It was the best he could do at the moment before he fled to his house to reflect, and I don't think any sarcasm whatsoever was intended.
He thought of Fina's feelings first.
Glad to hear Monse stayed with JL till he regained consciousness. I was baking a cake while watching and missed some things.
ReplyDeleteInteresting that they never showed Fina and Adolfo in bed. I guess Viewerville is to believe that they were waiting for marriage.
I was never clear on whether Fina and Pretty Boy A ever got it on. It's not like she was a virgin, but...
ReplyDeleteI also agree that Dimitrio's remark to Josefina wasn't meant to be sarcastic. I think it was more for himself in that he felt like a prize idiot for not having seen through Adolfo before.
The one thing that concerns me now is the ugly possibility that Pedro has a contingency plan against his capture. As in: In the event of my death or capture, kill____________ .
Thanks for all your most excellent Monday recaps, UA. You have really gone all out with your effort to bring us these informative, creative, and unique recaps. Believe me, I recognize and appreciate the hard work and valuable time you spent bringing us such consistent and polished excellence. My only disappointment was that you never felt the urge to refer to María as Lady María during your Edith Wharton (I only am aware of her because of you) phase.
ReplyDeleteFlorida,
I enjoyed Dimitrio's "Sorry I ruined your wedding." It was sooo Dimitrio. I also think that he was being sincere and meant absolutely no malice. I even wondered if he might have ad libbed the line expecting a retake of the scene and they decided to leave it in.
Gringo,
I also noticed that Adolfo did not eject the bullet that remained in the chamber. Very observant and knowledgeable of you. Now, surely you must be anticipating this question from me... was this murder or self-defense?
Carlos
I would call it self-defense because Dimitrio had no idea that Adolfo's gun was missing the magazine.
ReplyDeleteTo someone else's point, JL stayed behind when Alejandro and Monserrat escorted Josefina out of there. He must have found the magazine after picking up the pistol and seeing it was missing. The weight difference alone would have necessitated that.
Maria would not have qualified as a lady due to being the daughter of the foreman.
UA,
ReplyDelete"Maria would not have qualified as a lady due to being the daughter of the foreman."
and yet in your very first recap you referred to Guadencia as "La Condesa Graciela de Mendoza", a rather lofty title for the daughter of a seamstress wouldn't you say?
As for Dimitrio, although I'm sympathetic, I'm going to accuse him of first degree murder since he went with the expressed purpose of killing Adolfo... premeditated murder.
Carlos
Re: the Private Lives of Fina and Adolfo. We have no knowledge of intimacy; we can assume in this day and age, it could have happened.
ReplyDeleteOn the contrary, we witnessed
Dim's private acts and even heard about them in some detail until the padre decided it was TMI.
Last night, however, Fina was repulsed when thinking that she had been "kissing" a murderer. She did not use the words, "making love." I prefer to think of her as an untouched, old fashioned girl.
It's strange that she went away to find herself and to some degree became more sophisticated, but in a major way, she fell subject to a master con man. As she told Dimitrio, she could not read everyone's soul, but she could read his. This should help in the healing.
Carlos,
ReplyDeleteHe went to apprehend a criminal and tried to work it out with fisticuffs first. Later it became self defense.
If you are still there, you missed my comment the other day that I was through with Adolfo as soon as he pulled the trigger on Maria. I thought you would agree with that.
Florida,
ReplyDelete"He went to apprehend a criminal and tried to work it out with fisticuffs first."
I'm pretty sure that earlier he had said (possibly even to Adolfo) that he had no intention of arresting El Alecrán but intended to kill him... but I said I was sympathetic.
"...I was through with Adolfo as soon as he pulled the trigger on Maria."
Yup... me too.
Carlos
Urban, I just got caught up with your wonderful film noir recap, and I can honestly say I'm going to miss them. I haven't had a chance to read everyone else's comments, will do a little later, since it will be a busy week for me preparing my four kids to go back to school Monday. But I just wanted to express my gratitude before we move on to tonight's episode.
ReplyDeleteLast night's episode left me feeling very sad. I cried when Adolfo was killed, and again when Fina arrived to cry over him. So much loss for all of our characters, all linked to one evil man, Pedro. I hope his anvil is huge!!!
Well, I'm off to read all your comments. Take care!
Maricruz
Urban A,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for writing this marvelous recap. I so appreciate it, as well as every other recap you have shared with us these past 9 months. Your unique Noir-style gets me every time. Sorry I am late to the party. I just finished reading the recap, but don't have time to read the comments.
Very sad to see Addie die, but I truly believe it was the only way to stop him from killing anyone else. The way he got angry at Fina when she was calling the police was quite frightening. Addie was two people. The pretty boy with the beautiful lashes, that was in love with a fantasy life that was to never be. But he was also a stone-faced assassin. He was a trained killer with a chip on his shoulder. He refused to pay for his crimes.
I am sure this has been discussed, but I have to bring up that last scene with Gracie, Montse and Dimi. I found it so interesting that Gracie brought up the fact that God is great and miracles do happen. In other words, she's going to miraculously recover from her "brain tumor" and live. After all, Montse said she didn't want her mother to die. I wonder how long Gracie will wait to "recover"?
Thanks again Urban!
back to work...hasta pronto!
Urban,
ReplyDeleteI forgot to thank you for the Becall/Bogart picture, and that awesome movie line. So sad to hear of her death. Also of Robin Williams' passing. May they both RIP.
Saludos a Todos :-)
ReplyDeleteI haven't commented actively, but have read the fabulous recaps whenever I missed a capitulo (or couldn't keep up with the dialogue). All of you recappers have outdone yourselves--each time I came to the blog, each recap would reinforce my understanding.
I agree that Esmeralda's reaction to El Alacran's identity was the best of them all--genuine emotion and disgust. "Que asco!" Margarita really is an outstanding actress. I can't stop re-watching that scene! -->https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hOF0qionzA (30:00--31:35)
I'm glad there's a Gaudencia-is-Faking table. When Rosario caught her in that lie last week (?), I wasn't sure where the plot was going with that, or what Gaudy was planning. Dos mezcalitos, por favor.
Como la gran final se acerca, and Pedro continues to incite our hatred, I can only hope that JOSEFINA is the one to kill him. Eso seria dulce...
Urban Anthropologist:
ReplyDeleteI think this may have been your finest recap.
You did a wonderful job at capturing the action and the pathos of the capitulo.
Your commitment to giving your best in recapping always shines through. Your dedication is greatly appreciated.
Elna June
Poor Josephina! But honestly, HOW did Adolfo expect to live a happy life with his best friend's ex wife AFTER he made Dimitrio Monica's widower before he was able to be her husband? Just how? When I think of how Dimitrio wept over his beautiful Capitana's death, I find it hard to 100% sympathise with Adolfo. He should have just turned himself in.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad Macario got slapped by Dominga, about flipping time someone did that! Everytime he said or did something very silly, I wished I could jump into my T.V and slap his face! That will learn him LOL
