ReplyDeleteThis weekend’s summaries for our leisurely stroll through Kara Para Ask (AKA Black Money Love or Amor de Contrabando), will cover episodes 50-52:
Friday. Episode 50. Babachita
Saturday Episode 51. Dondi
Sunday Episode 52 Babachita
Babachita
"KPA"/OT
ReplyDeleteBabachita: It would be nice if Univision would start airing Brazilian Telenovelas again.
Steve, I’ve never watched a Brazilian telenovela, but they are probably good. Right now many viewers don’t have access to the Univision channels due to a dispute with YouTubeTV. They need to fix that first. But a Brazilian TN would be refreshing for a change.
DeleteBabachita
Brazilian novelas
ReplyDeleteIf you want to try one, Babachita, I thought Avenida Brasil was great. It was on Telemundo years ago. I think it might be available on Vix or maybe Peacock.
Brazilian novelas
DeleteI found this on Vix Gratis. It does look good. I’m a little overwhelmed with stories right now, but will definitely watch it before long.
Thank you! I think of you with Turkish and Mexican stories. I know you mentioned the Korean Dr Che. You are very multicultural!
Babachita
OT
ReplyDeleteI wish they would show South Korean novelas instead of Turkish ones. Brazilian novelas would be a good choice too, but I subscribe to Globo so I get to watch them as they are broadcast.

Episode 50 #1
[This was the same restaurant with Elif and Omer from Episode 49; there is some overlap due to different translations, etc.]
Omer meets Elif at a white restaurant by the sea with blue tables, chairs and trim.
They both greet each other cordially. Omer is in a really good mood, but Elif seems subdued. He tells her she looks beautiful. She looks back very seriously and says nothing.
Omer: Are you hungry?
Elif: Not really.
Omer: How can you not be hungry. We came here to a five-star breakfast.
Omer goes on to say their breakfast is not tasteless like those in Rome, but a full and tasty breakfast. He is very excited and calls the waitress over.
Omer: So, how are you doing?
Elif: Why did you call me, Omer?
Omer: Whoa, looks like Signorina got up from the wrong side of the bed.
He waits for a response and then his expression is more serious as he says he will stop the small talk.
Omer: Elif, I know you’ve been expecting an answer. You asked me if I’d forgiven you. (He smiles at her.) I’ve forgiven you, my love. Our elders would say forgiveness gives rise to pride. [This would be pride in a good sense, as he can be proud of forgiving her.].
Omer continues: I didn’t understand it then, but they were right. I learned unconditional love from you. You’ve taught me all of this. You’ve broken the stone shield around my heart. Your eyes, your beautiful lips, your voice when it trembles when you get angry, your blushing when you get shy, all of this changed me. It’s made me a different Omer. You’re a part of me now. I tremble with each of your breaths. You know what I really want? Just to spend time with you. A stolen moment here or there. You taught me to love freely, to talk about my feelings, you’ve always been brave since the beginning of it all. You still are. Call it nature or nurture, but we were brought up by fathers who didn’t stroke their sons’ heads or give them love, but this love changes everything. [I think by “sons” Omer means children. However, it seems like Ahmed Denizer was affectionate to his daughters. He had no sons.]
(Omer continues): You’re making this boy into a man.
Omer grins but can’t get Elif to respond. She just sits there with a serious expression.
Omer: You’re the kind of woman who makes a guy like me into a poet. I know it’s not just your beautiful eyes. Signorina, whoever you are, I love you, even with all our lies and mistakes. This love of mine gets stronger by the day
FLASHBACK: Hulya tells Elif there is a man at the door asking for her.
Elif: Did he give his name?
Hulya: I tried, but he insisted it was really important.
Elif goes to the door to find Sami!!!
Sami: I’m sorry to bother you this late.
Elif: Has something happened? Is Omer OK?
Sami (with an odd expression): Nothing like that. Omer is fine. He’s not aware that I’m here at all.
Elif: Is there a problem?
Sami: Yes, unfortunately. The problem is the relationship you have with Omer.
Back to the restaurant:
Elif: I don’t love you any more. That’s it. It’s over for me.
Omer can’t believe what she just said, after he opened his heart to her. He smiles, hoping she doesn’t mean it.
Omer: And, what’s this now?
Omer starts to look serious.
Omer: Is this a joke, Elif? Look, I’m not laughing.
Elif: No, it’s not a joke. I mean that’s it. It’s as I say. I’m sorry.

ReplyDeleteEpisode 50 #2
Elif gets up and asks for the bathroom, which is one floor down.
The waitress brings the eggs, telling Omer that his girlfriend is really beautiful and that God will protect them both from bad energy. He thanks her.
In the restroom, Elif is crying and looking at herself in the mirror. She tries to wipe away the tears, but they are followed by more.
Meeting with Husseyn, Tayyar, and Ali:
Husseyn: What kind of person are you that you can’t understand anything? That’s my brother. I can’t allow something like this.
Tayyar: I don’t remember that I asked for permission, Husseyn. I told you what has to be done. There’s no need to be obstinate.
Husseyn: There is. I’m his chief and I can stop him whenever I want to. I left him calm and that’s what counts.
Alif: You think it’s that easy, do you? I would almost believe you if I didn’t know Omer. Your dumb brother will not stop until he finishes what he started and not you or anyone else can stop him.
Husseyn: Watch your tongue, Ali!
Ali: Husseyn, Omer is getting too close. He’s on our trail. He just shouted at me yesterday. He told me what kind of cop I have become due to the file. It means his eyes are on me.
Husseyn: Yeah, my brother’s been angry with you from the beginning. He had his suspicions about you from when the file was opened. What have I done? Did I sell you? No I told him this man is honorable. I can put my trust in him and then what did Omer do? He sat down. Did I hold him down?
Ali: Yes, you did.
Husseyn (grabs Ali and shakes him: Did you try and sell my brother out because of your fear?
Tayyar: Go slowly. Take it easy. (Husseyn and Ali separate and adjust their coats.). Why are you getting into such a rage? We’ve tried to save not only ourselves, but to try hard to protect you, you know, Husseyn. If your brother gets to me, it means that he’ll reach you as well. The only way to stop him is to stop the police support behind him. All will give up, and no one will get hurt. Everyone can continue their lives.
Husseyn: What will happen then? What will happen to Omer then? This is his whole life. He’s given his entire life to rid the world of evil. What are you saying now? If you take my brother’s job away from him and that will make you feel better? How can I do this, Tayyar? I shot him once. Don’t ask me to shoot him again. You got away with it once. Don’t ask for me again because if you are asking that I shoot my brother one more time, you might as well shoot me in the head.
Back at the restaurant, Omer is still sitting and Elif comes back from the bathroom. She sits down.
Omer, taking her hand: Elif, will you please tell me what happened. He stares longingly at her. She withdraws her hand from his.
Elif: Goodbye, Omer.
Elif gets up to leave, but Omer stops her.
Omer: What do you mean goodbye? These are your last words?
Elif nods and walks off. Omer looks very frustrated as he watches her leave.
Mert is waiting at a gas station while Nilufer is in the restroom. He finally goes in to find her, but another woman is the only one there, she is annoyed: Oh my goodness.
Mert: I’m sorry, Ma’am. I’m looking for my girlfriend.
Woman: This is vacant. There’s no one except for me.
Mert looks in a stall and sees an open window.
Nilufer and Fatih on a couch.
Fatih: What answer are you looking for? Ask and I’ll give it to you.
Nilufer: I don’t know Fatih, I’m really mixed up.
Fatih: Don’t listen to your head. Follow your heart. (Fatih places Nilufer’s hand on his heart.). Look my heart beats just for you. I love you very much. Marry me. Take me.

ReplyDeleteEpisode 50 #3
Just then, Nevin comes in telling Fatih that the witnesses are here.
He welcomes them, then tells Nevin he and Nilufer are still talking. She tells Fatih they should go into the garden and talk while walking in a relaxed way there. He agrees.
Husseyn, Ali and Tayyar are still talking after Husseyn leaves the meeting.
Ali to Hussseyn: Don’t get emotional. He’ll get over it. We’ll get him (Omer) another job.
Husseyn, yelling: What? Emotional? He’s my brother. Man, I’m not in. You can do whatever you want to do, do it now.
Husseyn walks off, but Tayyar calls after him.
Tayyar: Look Husseyn, I have disregarded the things you told me about your past , but you have to pull yourself together now. Get your head right. Control yourself.
Husseyn: I raised him, Tayyar. I lay on the floor so that the stones would not touch his feet. I worked long nights in order for him to get an education. . Since he’s been out of the city I haven’t been able to shut an eye at night. And now you tell me to get over my brother who is like a son to me. I can’t. I’d rather die. I won’t do it, Tayyar.
Tayyar: You don’t have another option, Husseyn. You have to give up on that issue. Omer will kill you if he finds out that you killed his fiancée. He won’t care that you’re his brother. Do you understand what I’m telling you, do you?
FLASHBACK to Sibel begging Husseyn for her life.
Sibel: I’ve made mistakes, you have made mistakes as well. Please can we help each other? I beg you to think of me and Omer. We love each other. How can you do this? How can you tear us apart?
Husseyn, with his wild-eyed diamond-fueled expression, looks at her, as she pleads for her life.
Back at the meeting:
Husseyn: No, I don’t even want to think of the day. Don’t remind me of that day.
Husseyn drives off.
Ali to Tayyar: So, what did he say?
Tayyar: Nothing, his brain’s not really working. Look, Ali, if this guy does something, I’m going to wash my hands of what happens to both of you.
Tayyar walks off, leaving Ali looking very concerned.
Fatih and Nilufer in the garden.
Fatih: Won’t you talk? You’re afraid. This is because I hurt you, right? (She nods.) You’re afraid of me. I did this to you.
Fatih is very affected by this.
Fatih: May Allah punish me. These hands will be broken. (He is trying to break his hand. This gets Nilufer’ attention as she begs him not to do it.)
Back to Elif walking, being followed by Omer. He finally goes up and grabs her arm.
Elif: Omer, please just leave me alone.
Omer: Let’s talk. You can’t go like this.
Elif: There’s nothing to talk about. Just leave me.
Omer: Just explain what happened.
Elif continues to say that It’s over and nothing is left.
Omer: It’s Metin’s work. He made you do this, right? .
Elif: What does Metin have to do with this? Omer, just leave me!
Omer: I’m sure it’s him. Is he the one threatening you? Or is there something else I need to know?
Elif: There’s nothing else.
Omer, holding her chin up: Listen Elif look in my eyes and tell me.
Elif: Shakes him off: Go away. I don’t have to explain anything to you.
Omer: Elif, don’t you see what you’re giving up? Don’t give up on us and walk away. Elif, don’t do it, please.
Elif: Enough, Omer, I don’t want to talk anymore.
Elif walks away.

Omer: It’s not over yet.
Elif: It is over.
He follows her as she walks away. He catches up and handcuffs her to him.
Omer: You can’t order me around, Signorina. This is what you want. (He takes the handcuff key out.)
Elif: Give that to me.
He throws it into the water, leaving Elif speechless. [Her expression is priceless as she watches the key disappear.]
Elif: Omer! What did you do? What are you doing?
Omer: I’m taking you prisoner and I’m not going to set you free before I get what I want. Tell me what changed last night at midnight.
Elif, struggles against the handcuff: Are you aware you’re acting like an idiot?
Omer: Smiles, holds their arms up, Come with me. Let’s go.
Nilufer and Fatih
Nilufer is bandaging his hand wound.
Fatih: You love me but you were afraid. You’re right. I am a mad man.
Nilufer: It’s true. I am afraid and I get angry mostly because I don’t know who you are.
Fatih: I’m Fatih, the man you’re in love with. The man who is prepared to die to have you as his wife.
Nilufer: Knowing someone is not like this. Will you get married to someone you don’t know, Fatih? You know everything about me, my past, my family. What do I know about you? Only that you love me. There is nothing else besides that.
Fatih: How can we become lovers if we don’t know ourselves?
Nilufer: Becoming lovers is one thing but loving someone deeply is something entirely different. I mean the ceremony and all that goes with it. I’m not so familiar with all these things.
Fatih: We’ll have the same one day. I’ll take you from your house in a really beautiful wedding dress. Right now, it’s more meaningful to me much more meaningful.
Nilufer: It’s just me and your mother. What kind of family are you? What kind of man is your father to force you to do all these bad things? I actually don’t know anything about you. My father always said marriage is the union of families and now you expect me to have a bond with a family that are all strangers to me? You say that I become quiet because I’m fearful, but would I be near you if I was fearful?
Fatih: You are right. I will explain everything, however what you’re going to hear is not a nice story at all. My childhood wasn’t a Disneyland one. It’s not the kind of life you were used to. Tell me, do you still want to hear about it?
She nods yes.
Elif and Omer continue walking along the coast. She complains that the handcuffs hurt.
Omer: Well then listen to me.
Elif: Oh goodness, do I need to tell you how I want to be treated?
Omer: Look, it’s simple. You’ll be free as soon as you explain everything. What changed after last night? You didn’t arrive last night and you made up stories in the morning.
Elif: You say my feelings are not true?
Omer: Because you are in love with me, mi amore.
Elif: It’s a pity you think too much of yourself. The demon of sin makes you arrogant. It’ll be good to change this attitude of yours.
She walks on, dragging him along.

Omer: Yeah, sure I’ll change my attitude, no problem, but I’m not going to leave you, so you can take that thought and throw it away and don’t think about pulling the wool over my eyes. Elif, look in my eyes and just speak the truth. Tell me that you don’t love me.
Elif: There you go again, talking like a high school student. It bores me, this childishness of yours.
Omer: I can’t give up. I can’t. We’ll stay like this if we have to. Looks like you’re going to have to get used to being my prisoner then, let’s go.
They walk off cuffed hand in hand.
Elif: Omer, can we find a “keyer” and make him open these cuffs?
Omer: A keyer can’t open this, that’s one. Keyer is not the right word for a locksmith, that’s two. And don’t tell anyone, you’ll really embarrass yourself, so make a note, that’s three.
Elif: Whatever, just get rid of this now.
Omer: (after Elif pulls) Don’t pull, you’ll hurt yourself. Now keep calm. Slow, slow.
Elif: OK, you want to talk.
Omer: Good, that’s good. Relax.
Elif (mimics his 1-2-3 speech): One, watch your language around me, second, you cannot order me around, third, if you want to talk to me, we’ll get rid of these cuffs because I’m not going to talk to you while I’ve got this on my arm. Make a note of that as well.
She walks on, dragging him with her.
[This is fun, watching them banter back and forth. She gives as good as he does. They are such a great match.]
Back in Fatih’s garden:
Fatih: Well, we stayed with my mother at Adana for a time when my father died. I was in first class at primary school. One day we were playing in front of the house and a man came along. “Remember the score if 5 to 6,: the kids say. The man stops in front of Fatih, (it’s Tayyar).
Tayyar: Are you Fatih, kid?
Fatih: A man cold as ice. He forced himself to smile. He asked for my mom. I told him where she was. She was at home and we went inside. He talked to my mom in the next room. Then he called me, and that was that. The next moment we were in Istanbul.
Back to Elif and Omer walking together, still cuffed. Omer says since she isn’t used to driving while cuffed, they will take his car. Elif says that must be one of the ways he charms girls. Omer says exactly, he’s charmed so many girls like this after his time at the police academy.
Elif: OK, crafty officer, how are we going to get into the car like this?
Omer: OK, I’ll get into the car first, and you’ll come after me.
Elif: So, how will you put your long legs to the other side?
Omer: Don’t worry, I’ll show you. Just relax, OK?
He opens the car, gets in, and they very awkwardly get in. She has to start the car on her side. They struggle to put their seatbelts on.

Fatih and Nilufer:
He first made us live in a slum. We then moved here. I grew up here. My mom still lives here. My uncle used to come and check on us every 6 months. He cared for us. I was grateful. I loved him a lot, and I wanted to be near him. I just wanted him to love me. I wanted him to treat my mother well. I wanted him to visit us more. But, that was just a dream. (Fatih starts to shake here.). He never even caressed my hair.
Nilufer: Just a second, I’m, confused. I thought you told me your dad’s dead and now you’re telling me he’s alive?
Fatih: My father is alive. The man who I thought was my father is my uncle. Don’t be shocked. It’s life. I found out when I was eight in a really bad way and it didn’t get better then. I treat him as if I don’t know he’s my father. I do his dirty jobs. I wait for his compassion. I watch my stupid brother’s wonderful life from a distance. That’s it.
Nilufer: But why didn’t this man take you into his house, your mother and you? Was he married, was that the reason?
Fatih: I hope it wasn’t because of that. This man who is my father, he raped my mother. It’s like a Brazilian telenovela.
Nilufer: What kind of man is he? Who is this man? Tell me his name.
Fatih: Forget his name, Nilufer. He has done only one good thing for me up until today. He introduced me to you.
Ali and Tayyar talking by phone as they return in their cars to their offices.
Tayyar: Are you in the same situation (about Omer)?
Ali: No, I don’t care about Omer at all.
Tayyar: Then I’ll totally forget about Husseyn’s crying. I know how to make him change his mind. If his own arm is gangrene, he’ll cut it off himself. He’s had to think about all this before he changes his ways.
Ali: How will you convince him he needs to change? He really seems determined.
Tayyar: I don’t think about the solution to an issue after the thing has happened, as you do, Ali. I always think ten steps ahead. I think of all the possibilities to prevent a thing before it happens. Let me speak in a language you understand, Ali. I tie my donkey to a safe place then he can’t escape as much as he tries. While I tell you, we’ll be done.
Husseyn driving his car angrily. He stops and yells. He must be thinking that he won’t be able to protect Omer after that conversation.
Nilufer and Fatih in the garden:
I also have a share in my dad’s fortune. I won’t leave it to that bonehead of a brother of mine. I have a trip to Rome coming up. Everything will change when I get back, I swear. My dad will go to prison, and I’ll take from him what I deserve bit by bit. I’ll create a new life with you and my mother. Only if you want it to be that way. I’ll understand if you say no after all that you’ve heard.
Omer is driving, still handcuffed to Elif.
Omer: You don’t look like a person who changes her mind all day, but I guess it’s like that in Italy. Isn’t that the way the Italians live, saying things that are not important? You can learn from me, you know. You talked about unconditional love, even I didn’t understand anything about it. Elif, you know what’s most painful about this? When I start to open up about myself to give this relationship a chance. There always seems to be a lie in the picture like now. The biggest obstacles in our relationship are these lies and these secrets.
FLASHBACK to Elif and Sami:
Elif: I’m sorry, Mr. Sami. I don’t think I know what you mean.
Sami: Omer has to remain alone. I’m sorry, this relationship is not real.
Elif: Mr. Sami, I’m not going to discuss my relationship with anybody else.
Sami: I forbade Omer to have a relationship with you at all and he failed to mention it to you?
Elif: No.

Episode 50 #7
Sami: Are you aware of the reason I did this? It’s because I love Omer. He’s like my child and I’m like a father to him. He was a young academy student when I first met him. His father was killed without reason in front of his shop. That day he decided to become a cop. He was sad, but he was stable and very clever. Avery promising young man. But now it looks like you’re trying to destroy his plans and wipe out his future.
Elif: This makes no sense. [I tend to agree with Elif about this!] Why would I do something like that?
Sami: So, you’re aware that we’re busy with the operation to catch the gang, right? We’ll get rid of these men once and for all. I’ll keep my promise to you, you will not go to jail, then you’ll focus on your own life, but I’m afraid it won’t end there. You see, your father wasted money on these men. That’s made you are target for them, and, unfortunately, Omer has also become a target.
Elif: What my father did is irrelevant here.
Sami: Look, I know Omer very well. He loves you very much. He may want you to be his wife. Our job is very difficult, especially in the private sector. If a person is a policeman, his family is also responsible to uphold that position. This is the main problem. You’ll be together and people will gossip about you. Yours is a family business. As far as I understand there are many problems. Omer will be accountable for these. As a result, he will not come into consideration for promotion. Omer is a clever guy. He’ll obviously know why. He’ll resign instead of giving up, and then he’s not doing to job of his dreams anymore. His love for you will begin to die. He’ll see you as the biggest obstacle in his life and he will start to resent you. Now, unfortunately, I’ve seen it happen before. I’m not here to fight, I’m just telling you what I know.
Elif: Mr. Sami, you are a very successful fortune teller and a great psychologist and an awesome cop on top of all of that.
Sami: Elif, you’ve only got two options. Either you’re going to be with Omer and his operation will end and then Omer will be unhappy because of the unsuccessful undertaking. You’ll go to jail, of course and darkness will descend on your life and on the life of your company and your sisters are separated. I heard that your sisters don’t have their feet flat on the ground. They need you, and if you don’t have money then, what will they do without you? I’m sure they’ll leave. What do you think will happen when you come out of prison after years. You won’t have any friends, and you’ll have no place to stay. What will you do about it when your life has turned upside down?
Elif: Do you mean that I must choose between Omer and my family, right?
Sami: My concern is for Omer more than your family. You are the greatest hurdle in his path to success. It’s you or his job, I’m afraid. A tough choice, but in love sometimes there are sacrifices.
Sami walks away. (He never was in the house; all this took place at the front door.)
Back to the present, handcuffed to Omer who is driving.
Elif if looking out the window, thinking hard.
The phone rings, Omer has to get Elif to hold the phone while he inserts the earphone awkwardly with the handcuffs on.
Omer: Hello.
Caller: Officer, I’m Halil’s wife.
Omer: Yes Ma’am.
Caller: I have something on my mind regarding my husband.
Omer: Stay there and I’ll come right away.
Elif: Omer, where are we going like this?
Omer: There’s some progress regarding Taner’s murder case. We need to go urgently.
Elif: We go to work dressed like this? Just take these off. I need to go to work as well.
Omer: Sorry, Signorina, looks like we’re spending some time together. Looks like there’s no escaping me.

Back at Nevin and Fatih’s house:
Imam: I’m sorry, Nevin, this is not my only job. I need to get to the mosque.
Nevin: Just ten more minutes. [This might be irrelevant, but I can understand her better than earlier, even without her tongue.]
Fatih: Are you leaving?
Imam: I guess you’re not sure yet. Think carefully and then you call me.
Nilufer: I’m sorry we made you wait this long, but I’m ready. We can start right away.
Smiles all around.
Fatih: Are you sure? Are you really going to be my wife?
Nilufer: I prefer spouse.
Fatih: We can say it in Arabic as well, it doesn’t matter.
Nilufer: Is a wedding dress to be worn for the ceremony?
Fatih: There is no wedding dress, but we have a white veil.
Nevin smiles as they go in the house but then notices Fatih’s bloody hand.
Fatih: It’s nothing. Come.
Omer and Elif arrive at Halil’s home. They discuss getting out of the car while cuffed. Omer tells her it’s really easy if she will help. They get out through the driver’s door this time. They look longingly at one another.
Omer: Don’t talk to the woman inside. Don’t ask any questions. Just don’t say anything.
Elif: Look here, don’t tell me what to do. You’re going to be fine with everything that I do from now on.
Omer: So, what have we got to talk about, Signorina? I’m the one who decides the rules here.
Elif: Come on then, hurry up, don’t talk.
They arrive at a glass door reinforced by metal. The glass is broken. Omer knocks.
Wife: You’re fast, officer.
Omer: Ma’am, what you have to say will be important for our case.
She looks askance at the handcuffed Elif.
Omer: You can talk, it’s ok. She’s not a stranger.
Wife: If I tell you something, he won’t get hurt? Halil is in jail. The things I’m going to tell you are for his benefit.
Omer: Please don’t be anxious., ma’am. You really can trust us. I promise. I think you’re going to be a lot of help to. Us. Please don’t hide anything. (He looks at Elif while he says this.) Honesty is all we ask.
Wife: The rich businessman you sent me the picture of.
Omer: You mean Tayyar Dundar?
Wife: I saw him on television after that on the news. He has a foundation or something. He also has a hospital. I suddenly understood. Halil used to work at his hospital. At the large one.
Omer looks at Elif.
Religious wedding of Fatih and Nilufer.
Imam: What do you want as a base price? To Nilufer.
Nilufer: I don’t know anything.
Fatih: It will never happen but just so that you feel secure, he asks whether you want gold, a house, or money.
Nilufer: Is it something like a bride price?
Fatih: Not exactly but similar.
Nilufer: What should I say?
One of the witnesses says she is really beautiful and that she should ask for gold the equivalent of her weight.
Nilufer: We’ll make a loss then. I don’t know what to ask for. My prospective husband didn’t buy me a diamond ring, so maybe that’s what I want.
Imam: Are you sure about this?
Nilufer: I’m sure. I already have his heart. I have what I wanted. The rest is not important.
They look at each other and Nevin smiles at the couple.
Imam: Miss Nilufer, do you accept Mr. Fatih who is the son of Bulent to be your husband, to have and to hold through sickness and health for as long as you both shall live?
Nilufer: Yes
Imam asks this three times.
Then he asks Fatih the same for Nilufer, daughter of Ahmed.
After Fatih answers yes three times, the Imam asks the witnesses: Are you witness to this event? Yes, we are.
Imam: Allah will bless it.
They raise their hands, and the episode is finished.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Babachita, for another excellent recap. Big happenings in this episode and you captured it all. Explanations and backstory. The handcuff scene is one of my favorites. Nice to see a religious wedding. The imam asked Nilu about “mehir”. That’s supposed to give some financial security to the bride in case the marriage ends. Nilu had no idea. Besides social class, it's interesting to see differences between traditional and modern, village life and city life, and the religious and the secular, in dizis.

ReplyDeleteBabachita, I decided to look for the English subtitles of this episode on the Dailymotion that Dondi suggested for Bahar (BTW for those that watched it, I'm all caught up to the current episode in that. 3rd season is a disappointment so far). I ended up with the English dubbing! Omer's voice is definitely off-putting so I'll go back to the Spanish YouTube version when I watch it this weekend. I preferred Dailymotion because there are no commercials (usually.). I'll get back with more observations later.

Arda wants a do over with Pelin. He introduces himself to her. He says let’s start over as friends. She thinks it’s silly, but she buys into it.
Huseyin goes to Ali’s office and he’s angry—tell me that you dissuaded Tayyar! Ali says that Tayyar is right, Omer has become a real pain. Omer calls Ali [he’s driving and still handcuffed to Elif]—I have to tell you something important. Taner had a cellmate, Halil, the man we think killed him. He was working at Tayyar’s hospital. He was there for 5 or 6 months.
Ali is alarmed. Are you sure? Omer is sure, Halil’s wife said so. Ali tries to minimize this fact. Maybe he never even met Tayyar. Nothing will come of this. Omer wants to present this to the DA. Ali tells Omer not to do it. They need more evidence first. Huseyin asks, what did Omer say? Ali tells him and adds, your brother doesn’t waste time. You were going to keep an eye on him. You said you would stop him. Huseyin is distressed.
Pelin comes back to her desk. She opens a drawer and finds a yellow rose with a note: I want everything to start over from the beginning. Let’s fix it. Come with me to the cinema tonight. The popcorn is on me if you come. The tears will be yours if you don’t come.
Omer calls Pelo to ask for handcuff keys. Pelo walks out without giving Arda an answer. He gripes that he fell in love with the most stubborn girl. She walks back into the room and says, I heard that! Something like stubborn? Arda stammers it was something about Chief Ali.
Elif disputes Omer’s theory. Thousands of people work for Tayyar Amca. He has hospitals all over the country. Omer replies, it’s a good thing you’re not a cop. Your analytical skills are weak and you’re naïve. Elif snarks, oh, you’re so right, my analytical skills are weak and you’re so clever. Do you see what you’ve done to us? This is a disgrace. Omer holds their cuffed arms up. Oh, so it’s not a problem when people do things like this in Europe or America, but it’s a disgrace when we do it. Elif says he's being absurd.
The DA’s car arrives at the courthouse and he sees Omer, Elif and the handcuffs. He asks Omer if there is a problem. Omer replies, there was a slight argument, but we’ll solve it. Pelo arrives with the key. Omer tells Elif to stay outside with Pelo and he goes into the courthouse. Pelo asks her what happened. Elif is too exasperated to speak.
The DA asks Omer if he found anything on the boat where the girl was found. It belongs to an American businessman, Omer replies, he hasn’t been in Turkey in 6 months. DA asks, and the captain and crew? They had no idea, Omer answers, they only come once a week for maintenance. DA speculates that maybe someone else kidnapped the woman. Have you talked to her?
Omer says the woman is frightened. The issue is delicate. Tayyar learned the woman had a relationship with Taner. He left her in the middle of the sea to die and then he sent a guy to kill Taner while he was in prison. These are just allegations, the DA says, we need evidence. This is a serious claim. Omer continues, Savcım, we learned that Halil Kaplan was working at Tayyar’s hospital. A colleague is checking the hospital archives for the record. With your permission, we can interrogate Tayyar.
The DA asks, what does your chief say? Omer doesn’t answer and the DA understands that the chief is against it. He reiterates that they need strong evidence to accuse such a powerful man. This is not enough for questioning. Omer reluctantly replies, you’re right. I’m sorry. I’ll come back with stronger evidence.

Elif asks Pelin if she thinks the same as Omer about Tayyar. Is it possible? Pelo answers, it’s too early to say. I don’t know what the result of the interrogation will be. Right now, it’s an assumption. Elif changes the subject to Arda. Pelo smiles. My life has suddenly changed. Earthquakes in my mind and heart. Aftershocks happen one after the other. Elif says she understands. Pelo asks about Elif. She can’t talk because Omer comes.
Omer asks Pelo to search the hospital archives for info on Halil. She says she’ll handle it with Arda. She leaves.
Omer tells Elif he’ll drop her at work and they can talk on the way. Elif replies that she’s behind in her work now. She will have Levent come, and they will work from her home. Omer is instantly jealous. Very nice… I see Levent Bey is becoming more and more a part of your life, he says.
Ali and Tayyar meet. Is there good news, Tayyar asks, what have you done with Huseyin? There’s no change, Ali replies, the real problem is Omer. He found the connection with Halil. He won’t let go. If Halil talks it will lead to you. What should we do?
Fatih drops Nilufer off. He really doesn’t want her to go. He wants to take her to their house. She says it’s okay, she will wait forever for him. He gives her a necklace with an amulet to wear. Keep me with you, he says, I’ll feel like I’m with you if you wear this. I’ll buy the ring you wanted. But no diamond in this world is as precious as this amulet. I keep the same one around my neck. I hope it will protect you and our love. I’ll never feel alone if you don’t take this off.
Mert catches Nilu walking back to the house. She tries to explain. If I said I wanted to be alone, you wouldn’t have let me. He interrupts her—don’t lie in vain. I waited for you so we could go in together, so my father would not suspect anything, he says. She asks, why are you doing me this favor? He doesn’t answer.
Elmer rides in silence until Omer pulls the car over. What are you doing, she exclaims. Time to talk, he replies. She gets out of the car and starts walking. Omer gets out and follows. She walks to the water. Omer starts, okay I know I hurt you. There were times I spoke bitterly. If you want to take it out on me, okay, I surrender. But hasn’t this lasted long enough? What’s the matter?
Elif says, I’m not upset about anything. You came and expected a reply, and I gave it to you, Omer answers, what should I think? Was the old Elif the lie or the current one? Elif begs, please let me go. Omer says, I’ll take you home. Let’s get back in the car. No need, Elif replies, I’ll walk. Omer leaves her by the shore. She turns and watches him go. He catches her looking then drives off.
Nilufer and Mert enter the grounds and Tayyar greets them, how was school today.? Mert lies and says we went for a walk after class. Nilu adds, yes, that’s why we are a little late. Tayyar is okay with that. He says dinner is ready, but he won’t be joining them. He needs to go out.
Ali calls Huseyin. There’s something wrong and it’s serious. Omer went to the DA. We need to do something. Huseyin pushes back, if you try to do something to my brother, try to get him out of the police force, I will not let that happen. I’ll fight you. I swore to protect him.
Fatih meets Tayyar. Tayyar notices his bandaged hand. It’s just a little accident. Tayyar asks where were you all day? Fatih says he was organizing the Rome issues. Tayyar thought that was all done but Fatih says he was reviewing things, talking to new staff. Seeing that I don’t have another chance to make a mistake, I need to clear the old blood out and start working with the fresh blood. Okay, Tayyar replies, but don’t act before I tell you to.

Tayyar gives Fatih a syringe. It’s over for Halil, this is for him. Fatih alarmed, he’s sure that Halil won’t talk. Tayyar doesn’t want to take the chance. Humans can’t be trusted. Whatever you do, finish this. I’ll wait for the good news.
Elif replays the words Omer said to her at breakfast: Signorina, whatever you are, whoever you are, I have loved you with all your mistakes and lies. I love you more each morning. Asli and Bahar walk in on Elif. The doorbell rings. It’s Levent. Bahar is shaken up. A basic greeting is exchanged between them. Asli introduces herself to Levent. She holds out her hand, don’t be nervous. I’m doing fine and I won’t cause any trouble. Welcome. They shake.
Elif explains that they are working on the men’s collection. Asli is interested in this and wants to stick around. Nothing Levent can say except okay. Elif asks Hulya to make tea for everyone. They head off to the study. Bitter Bahar stays behind.
A very cheerful Huseyin brings glasses to the table in the yard. He calls for Melike to bring the meze. Omer enters the yard. Huseyin rushes to Omer and gives him a big hug. My brother, I would be sacrificed for you, how I have missed you. Did you start drinking early, Omer replies with a smile. Don’t be shocked, Huseyin answers, or I’ll hit you instead. Do I have to be drunk to hug my brother? Omer says, there’s something about you, we’ll see. Huseyin jokes that his mood is lifted, it happens every 40 years. Come drink with me. If you have other plans, cancel them.
Melike brings the meze and starts complaining. Huseyin answers, try not to complain, Melike, I know that’s very hard for you… but maybe… you can do that for us. Melike pouts at the putdown and storms off. Omer looks concerned by this exchange. Huseyin notices. Don’t look like that, we are 40 years old, we love each other this way.
The neighbors Ferhat and Tufo come over. Tufo has brought his saz. Huseyin says that Ferhat wanted to come to thank his kirve (Omer). Let’s have fun together. Are you ready? I really needed this brother, Omer replies, this is like medicine. What are brothers for, Huseyin answers, they are for taking away the boredom and sadness, if nothing else.
Arda nervously waits at the movies with a large popcorn. And here comes Pelo. He says he wasn’t sure if she liked popcorn, but he got the large size with extra salt. Amazing, Pelo replies, we just met but I guess you read my mind. The movie starts and Arda tries to sneak his arm around Pelo. She responds, I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be so close to someone I just met.
Rakı is poured and the drinking has started. Tufo plays the saz. Huseyin and Ferhat start singing. Omer complements the singing. He wants to make a request. Huseyin says he’ll sing until the morning if Omer wants. [Burak Tamdoğan (Huseyin) really does have a great voice.] Omer’s choice: Değmen Benim Gamlı Yaslı Gönlüme/Don’t Touch My Sorrowful and Mourning Heart. Lots of versions, and I prefer the ones with the saz accompaniment, but this is Cem Adrian, and it has English translation.

Huseyin gets a call from an unknown number and gets up to take it before he sings. It’s Tayyar. Huseyn has nothing more to say to Tayyar. Tayyar says he has a gift for him that he forgot to give. He plays a voice recording of Huseyin: “why was Sibel there? You send me to kill my brother’s fiancée? Omer was here, he went to the scene. Do you think he can sleep peacefully without finding the killer? You don’t know Omer yet. He’s one of the best police officers in the country.” Tayyar wants to meet Huseyin at the same place, same time in the morning. Huseyin is devastated.

Huseyin heads back to the table and sings. The sadness of the song comes through for him, too. We see Elif trying to concentrate on her work with Levent. Bahar serves tea. I think Asli is asleep on the couch. Omer gets teary at the table. Pelo gets teary at the movies. Nilufer is in her room she kisses the amulet Fatih gave her. The crooked guard slips into Halil’s room and administers the fatal injection. The song continues over the departing of the guests and the clearing of the table. Huseyin is left alone with his sorrowful heart.
Arda drops Pelin off at home. He thanks her, it was a beautiful night. Yes, Pelo says, and the movie was nice too. Awkward pause. Arda asks for an invite in for coffee and maybe some walnut cake. Pelo says she baked one yesterday. He’s ready to head in. Pelo stops him. I don’t invite just anyone in. I’m not certain what we are yet. Sorry, good night Arda. I had a good time. He asks, when will it be certain? What are we then? She answers, we’ll see. He thinks this is nonsense. She reminds him that this is his nonsense.
Huseyin stands in the doorway of Omer’s bedroom and watches him sleep. He walks in and covers him with the blanket. He sits on the bed for a moment and runs his hand over the blanket. Overcome with emotion he hurries out of the room, and he sinks to the floor and cries.
Huseyin meets with Tayyar and throws the pouch of diamonds at his feet. Take it! Take it! You won’t touch my brother or get close to my family. Then, I will ignore your dirt, I will forget the things I know. Is it a deal Tayyar Dundar?
There are some things that can’t be bought, Huseyin Efendi, Tayyar replies, this is one of them. If my issue were the diamond, I wouldn’t have given them to you. He kicks the pouch back in Huseyin’s direction. Here, take them. You’ve become so rebellious. Think… if you help me, all your brother loses is being a cop. But he won’t have to lose his brother. Maybe Omer will prefer to give up his job not to find out that the woman he loved was killed by his brother. Your brother is very clever. He knows that the first pain can be recovered from, but the second can’t.
Tayyar tucks the pouch into Huseyin’s pocket and tells him this is his salary. I pay in advance. You’ll continue to help me for as long as I want. You’re lucky, Huseyin. You’ll be very rich. Do what Chief Ali tells you to do. Take your brother off my back. Don’t even think about not doing this.
Huseyin is ready to pull his gun and shoot Tayyar as he walks away, but Tayyar’s men appear and draw their guns first. Tayyar turns and cautions Huseyin, I tried to clean your record for you and you’re trying to stain them with blood. Allah, Allah…
Arda comes and knocks on Omer’s bedroom window. Omer reaches for his gun on the nightstand before realizing who it is. Arda tells him we have to go. Halil died in prison. Omer is stunned. Melike hears the voices and wakes up. She goes to the window. She calls out to Omer—where are you going at this time of night? Omer asks her to wake up Huseyin, maybe he’ll want to come. Melike says she’d wake him if she could find him. He’s not here.
Omer is surprised. Where would he go this time of night? She has no idea. The last she knew they were outside drinking. I thought that maybe he went to the station, she says. Did he have a night shift? Allah korusun… maybe something happened to him? Arda speculates that maybe he heard what happened and went to the prison before them. Omer thinks that’s possible. He’ll keep Melike informed.
And we are out.
