ReplyDeleteVery late to this Univision party. Thanks, Babachita and Kat for your terrific comments. I have a bad feeling about Tilsim's illness. The appendicitis diagnosis from one of you matched my own. Sorry, I'm now on page 2 and can't remember who said what. Having a burst appendix might sour Tilsim on Daddy Dearest.
So, the plan was for Karsu to somehow be blamed for the trashing of the secondhand store. But it appeared to me that only the smashed glass happened. Karsu and Atilla arrived before they had a chance to do any damage inside, except for cleaning up broken glass. And Karsu and Atilla said they'd do that. What a ghastly human Reha is!
Atilla's plan to burn down his business sounds good. But I don't see how that helps Karsu at all.
I've seen the actor playing Karsu's sister (did they say her name?) in another dizi. But finding actors in the Turkish ones is hard. In the regular ones in Spanish, you type in the person's name and get names of shows they've appeared in. But searching cast lists for dizis seems to only show up as Wikis or whatever for the first 3 or 4 cast members. And, even if you manage to note the actor's name, when you google it, you might get Turkish names for shows the person has appeared in. And those aren't the titles used by the dubbed in Spanish ones we see here. Sigh.
Atilla is adorable. I don't think there's a path for Karsu to end up with him, but who knows. Reha's sister's crush could prove very interesting.
Karsu
ReplyDeleteNovelera, I looked up Seda Turkmen, who plays Lale. She played a character named Dilek Oknaz in Family Secrets (Yargi). I don’t recall the character by name, but she also looks familiar to me, and we saw Family Secrets in the last couple of years.
I haven’t watched all of tonight’s episode yet, so no comments yet.

A.MAR Capítulo 18 Parte 1 Notes from the Couch. . . the "in no particular order" version
ReplyDeleteEstrella refuses to "betray" Erika. Fabián asks what she is planning on doing with her feelings. She makes it clear that in a few months she will pay off her family's debt and then she will be gone and he will forget her. As she leaves, he shouts that will never happen. At home, Estrella has a lot to think about.
At the designer's jewelry store, Marina finds out from the designer herself that the mermaid pendant was made more than 20 years ago. Marina says it was made for a ten year old girl at the time and is soon disappointed to find out that the store has no records of the purchase. She explains that she was probably that girl and she was trying to find out about her past. Nevertheless, the designer does have a framed drawing of a mermaid that the woman who wanted the pendant paid her with. She remembers there was something about TWO pendants inscribed with "always together." She gives Marina the drawing to keep. Marina has a lot to process.
Brisa is upset when she finds out that there are no openings available at the civil registry to get married in the short term. She tries to threaten the worker but Meche tells her she needs to tread softly. Later, there is a cancellation at the civil registry the next week and Brisa excitedly tells Gabriel the good news.
His reaction is not like hers. He asks how can they get married in only one week's time He wants her to slow down because they need to talk seriously. She doesn't understand. He tells her that he cares for her a great deal BUT he can no longer pretend to feel something for her that he doesn't. He wants to put a stop to the wedding plans before he ends up hurting her. She suggests that they could postpone the wedding. He says no; his feelings are not going to change. Marrying her would be a mistake. He wants to make sure she understands that. She fights back blaming it all on Marina. He insists that he never cheated on her with Marina. He adds that he thinks that Brisa only wanted to marry him to get out of her difficult home situation and having to fish. She calls him a liar and a coward and on her way out, she slaps him good and hard. She next finds Marina in the restaurant where she works and screams at her for being a novio-stealer. Thanks to her, Gabriel cancelled their wedding. Brisa adds if only Gabriel had never rescued her, everything would be fine. She slaps Marina good and hard. That gets even the diners' attention. Brisa runs out.
Rosalba comes to Meche for "advice". What to do with a lover that cheated on her and then ended up marrying he other woman leaving her humiliated? Meche is sorry for her experience. Rosalba says that is why she wanted to talk to her since she knew that Ulises did the same thing to her. Meche says it has been hard but she has managed to move on. Rosalba offers her company anytime she feel alone. She hugs Meche and leaves. She later tells Porfirio who she visited. He doesn't like her taking risks like that. She tells him she is doing what she is doing because she hates Meche. She wants to make her think she is her friend and when she has her where she has let down her guard, she will destroy her life!!!
A.MAR Parte 2
ReplyDeletePerla goes to visit with Pascual. (WHY??? when she knows how he feels about her. I have no idea) She brings supplies so they can cook something together and get to know each other better. We find out that he met Valentín in another town and when his mother died they became like brothers. Valentín became his defender when people made fun out of him. Perla thinks that is very special. He became like a brother to him. He feeds her some delicious food and only asks if he can hold her hand. She agrees. Valentín comes in. She leaves. Pascual is (too) happy.
Erika thinks about her confrontations with Fabián and Estrella. She makes up her mind to not allow Estrella to get what she wants and to fight like her mother told her to. She has a momentary tantrum and then calls Sergio. He is shocked and interested about what she has to tell him: Estrella is the mother of his daughter. Sergio tells Juanjo that he wonders if she was the waitress that ended up pregnant. Juanjo reminds him that if the child is his, his problems with his father are over.Sergio says his father also wanted him also to get married and form a home of his own and this woman would probably not be interested.Juanjo disagrees. He won her heart before.
Gabriel has Brisa's ring and is thinking about what to do with it, Marina brings Iker home and Gabriel up to date abut the pendant. He tells her that he could not find the property on the island registered to anybody. He apologizes for not coming with them. Marina understands.
Gonzalo visits Meche who is back at work at her ceviche stand. He tells her she is more beautiful than ever and he would like them to get to know each other better. She thinks they are too old for that. He understands what it is to lose a loved one but thinks it is good to try to find love again. He leaves and Meche looks at her wedding ring still on her finger.
Azul tells her mother that she is not interested in meeting her father who treated her so badly and then . . . DING! DONG! It isn't the Land Shark! It is SERGIO. Estrella is shocked to see him and asks how he knew she was at her mother's house. He says he is there to verify two things. Is he Azul's father and if he is he needs for Estrella to prove it. Estrella tells him she doesn't have to prove anything to him. He had abandoned her years ago. He offers her any money she might need. She wants nothing from him. She ripped up the check he gave her years ago. She raised Azul on her own.Azul comes out not realizing that Sergio is there. Azul sees Sergio and is confused. Estrella sends her to her room but she overhears everything. Sergio makes it clear he is there to help them. Estrella sees him just as arrogant as ever thinking that his check book can solve everything. He blames Estrella for not informing him he was a father. She reminds him that he didn't want his child so she as supported Azul on her own. She is not going to take anything from him. She guides him out of the door. He tells her to call him when she calms down. Azul comes out in tears because she heard everything. Outside, as Erika watches from a corner, Azul, in tears, runs after her father saying she is the one who called him. She doesn't want anything to do with him or his money. He says he is only there to help them out and wanted to meet her. She admits that she wanted his number because she wanted to find out about her father. She asks: Why didn't he want her to be born? Why didn't he want to be her father? He explains that ten years earlier he was very young and he didn't feel ready to be her father. She knows she doesn't want a father like him. She runs back to Estrella. It looks like he wipes tears from his eyes. (Is it real emotion? or did he have something in his eye? I am voting for the second choice)
Karsu
ReplyDeleteNovelera, it was me with the appendicitis possibility. I have a brother that nearly died from a burst appendix, and our mother was an RN! She felt really guilty not taking his complaining seriously.
The plan for the business was to hurt the bottom line as the owner can barely afford Karsu as an employee in the first place.
Now on to tonight's episode. We had a bad storm blow in that knocked out our cable so I had to watch the last 15 minutes on my phone. Tilsim is better. She borrowed the maids phone and called Karsu who is at work. She apologizes profusely to her boss that she keeps asking for personal time, but he lets her go. The only customer all day was Karsu's sister. We get a replay of that scene. Turns out their cousin is who told irmak where she worked.
Atilla is definitely a superhero wannabe. The neighbor stiffs a delivery driver so he tips the guy himself, then borrows the outfit and goes to the neighbors, punches him in the face and tells him he better leave a 5 star review on his delivery or he'll be back. It was also humorous when Karsu asks about his book and he pretty much gives an autobiography of himself for the plot. He better get his bookish henchman to start writing the story for him as Karsu wants to read it, lol.
Irmak's suegra doesn't look much older than her son. She complains if irmak doesn't procreate soon her son won't be around for graduation or weddings of their child. I can't remember the husband's name, adyan or something , looks as old as his mother. They should have found a younger actor for that role. I just cannot understand how Irmak fell in love with this old man! Irmak told her cousin she feels she will never conceive until she resolved her issues with Mom and sister.
In the last scene it appears Deniz is having some repressed memories surface. Wonder if they are phasing out his stepdad. Haven't seen or heard from him in a while.

ReplyDeleteJarifa, your superb translations were greatly needed tonight. I got the gist of the Gabriel/Brisa "discussion" but thanks to you, all the pieces are now in place. I also appreciated your relating all of Sergio, Estrella's and Azul's conversations.
I'm very surprised (and relieved) Gabriel told Brisa the truth, as hard as it was for him. He was right about her wanting to escape a life where she was (gasp) expected to work! Not surprising she lashed out and reacted like the spoiled brat we've known she is all along. I really didn't have sympathy for her as she is so petulant, determined to have her way no matter the cost.
Two pendants! The mystery deepens...
"DING! DONG! It isn't the Land Shark!" had me laughing out loud. Just great...
I'm unsure what Perla's visit was supposed to accomplish. Was she hoping to make Valentin jealous and/or is she trying to befriend Pascual? Whatever that creamy concoction was, she was savoring every bite!
The young actress portraying Azul is excellent. You could tell Sergio was impressed with her but then who wouldn't be? Yeah, I vote crocodile tears although his acting was pretty impressive.
Jarifa, thank you, thank you! I'm away for a few days but hope to catch Monday's episode and look forward to reading your recap of tomorrow's episode that I will miss.
Diana
A.MAR
ReplyDeleteThanks, Diana. Glad you enjoyed LAND SHARK . What an episode! It was a breath of fresh air in novela land to have Gabriel tell Brisa the truth in relatively short order.
Since I am more awake this morning LOL, I need to add that the jewelry designer said that she made two pendants engraved with “always together” because the woman said she wanted them for her daughters. Marina has a sister out there. Hmmm, that makes me want to look at my list of characters.
That whole Perla situation with Pascual and Valentín is just weird. I always knew that Rosalba was a special kind of crazy but her twisted wanting to befriend Meche and then ruin her life was so far beyond the pale, what can I say?

ReplyDeleteKat in SC, Novelera, Jarifa, UA, Darcy & Co.,: I see we're still in the Mess Around & Find Out Tour of this Telenovela.
A.Mar
ReplyDeleteThanks Juanita. I'm still watching, mostly for the Gabriel and Marina story. He can wear those wife beater tshirts every episode and it would be fine with me. Has the actor been in other shows, I'll have to seek him out. He made total sense with what he told Brisa. She doesn't deserve him.
Erika seemed a bit sad when Azul was talking to Sergio. Of course she was in the background eavesdropping.
Just a quick comment to let you know I'm still watching.
A.Mar
DeleteOops, I meant Jarifa. Need to give credit where credit's due.
Karsu
ReplyDeleteAwoke to find all the great comments today! You guys rock! I am so glad to be watching with you.
(Kat, how on earth can you do all this recapping? When I recapped I was part of a team and had only one night a week to do. It was fun, but one night was a big plenty. You are amazing!)
The pizza guy bit was great. Our Atilla truly is a superhero. I loved how he hung back when he’d led Filiz to the now pounded rude neighbor, saying it all scared him. Ha! And the bit where he tells Karsu what kind of story he’s writing, and she gets all dreamy-eyed about how it would all work out to have a romantic ending. Oh, and did you see the cat trying to get in the glass door while Karsu was talking to Attila? In the next shot it wasn’t there.
Filiz taking over the HOA meeting was so well written. The past leader doesn’t stand a chance. And then Filiz’s sister giving her a thumbs-up and Filiz looking so smug. Fun!
I wonder why we repeated the scene between Karsu and her sister.
Isn’t the suegra, Adnan’s mother, just awful? Imek is so ethereally beautiful. And speaking of beauty, what about little Deniz’s eyelashes?
Finally Tilsin got some hugs!
A.MAR
ReplyDeleteKat, Pedro Moreno (Gabriel) sure is a cutie!
Karsu
ReplyDeleteMaggie, the only reason I see for the repeated scene between the sisters is because the "friend" who told Irmak where Karsu works was identified in this episode as their cousin. Did you get a feel if the cousin has been seeing Irmak all along? I couldn't quite tell.
I dislike Reha intensely, but I do see that he cares about his children in his own way, especially the girls. He even makes an attempt with Deniz. He is the father who always worked as Mom ran the household and the kids were on their best behavior when Daddy is home so he has no concept of what is involved. In fact he says if he gets custody he'll put a Nanny in charge of them and wash his hands of the actual childcare.
I never watched TV much. When I decided to learn Spanish 2 1/2 years ago I found Telenovelas and I'm making up for lost time. Reading CC's satisfies my preferred hobby...reading. Then I get to write with the recaps, another fun creative outlet. The way we are talking about Karsu works well I think.
Karsu
ReplyDeleteI agree with Maggie that Kat’s recapping ability is remarkable. I’m glad she’s watching this one!
Atilla is so much fun to watch!!! His expression gave forewarning that he would intervene with the delivery guy. An Equalizer for the Corner of Heaven!
It was funny recently when he nearly lost track of which Atilla he was, slicking his hair back!
Filiz is quite a force! She managed that meeting masterfully. Perhaps if she gains some power and control, she won’t be so focused on looking young. I noticed the pictures from her wedding and early married life show her looking naturally middle-aged. She now looks younger, having learned a painful lesson from Adnan’s leaving with Irmak.
Irmak seems so sad. She feels she doesn't deserve compassion, but it’s clear she hasn’t made a bed of roses. I wonder if the sisters will ever become close again. Karsu is so damaged right now that she has no compassion left. I notice Atilla counseled her to be less judgmental previously. Maybe he will guide her toward compassion. That would be ironic considering his other occupation. Are his “hits” considered justified in his mind? So far, I’m with him, especially delivery guy!
Türkiye seems to have tons of stray cats and dogs. They are valued by the population. One city (Istanbul?) recently tried rounding them up, and the people were furious, wanting their beloved street animals left alone. So, very often they appear in scenes unplanned. I find this fascinating. I guess people bond with particular animals, feeding them. I wonder if the animals are all well-behaved and rabies free. ?

ReplyDeleteThanks for the pat on my back. I'm glad to have found this site. I also noticed when Atilla was slicking his hair back, then remembered, oops I'm the disheveled guy now.
I thought Lale, when describing this interesting guy she met to Reha said he had black hair. I guess the gel he uses could darken it. She is definitely smitten with a guy she's only met for a business meeting.
Karsu
ReplyDeleteKat – when the awful suegra asked Imak about the cousin, whom she’d never seen before, Imak said she sees her but this is the first time she’s come to the house.
Wait, whut? You’ve been learning Spanish only 2 ½ years? I’ve been looking at these telenovelas I don’t know how long and while I’m very adept at reading the captions (my hearing isn’t great), I haven’t made any serious effort to study grammar. Mostly I just look up words. The end result is that I’m a flop at speaking, and heaven knows here in LA Spanish-speakers are everywhere. In fact, one of my closest friends is from Mexico. Recently my gardener hired a sweet helper who speaks no English. Lots of merriment when I struggled to talk to him. He was kind and corrected me a lot and we had a lot of laughs. But really, I should be fluent for heaven’s sake. That’s what happens when you only read and don’t speak. And when you don’t study up on grammar.
Babachita – I agree, Imak seems deeply sad. Also, wow, that’s really interesting about the cats and dogs! Thank you for the education!

ReplyDeleteI was backing my car out the other day and wanted to say to my Mexican friend “no quiero atropellarte” but I couldn’t get it out. I got as far as no quiero and then I struggled ato, apo, atro.. like a kid trying to say spaghetti. So yesterday, my friend (and college roomie) came to visit. Her native language is English, but she used to teach in a bi-lingual classroom, so she’s fluent in Spanish. I told her about not being able to speak Spanish really and told her my sad story about struggling with this word. She didn’t know the word! Today I sent her a list of must-have vocabulary for watching telenovelas with the observation that I didn’t know what use a lot of these would be of for a suburban lady of a certain age, which is me. She tells me she didn’t know a few of the words! See what kind of education we’re getting? I tell people I have the vocabulary to put a hit out on someone or to have a torrid love affair! Here’s my list:
Apuñar
Sobornar
Empujar (por la ventana/las escaleras)
Cachetear
Golpear
Engañar
Mentir
Acabar con alguien
Defraudar
Disparar
Pudrir en la cárcel
Vengarse

ReplyDeleteWhere else could we accumulate such interesting words, Maggie? I love your list! You’re right! Many of these words wouldn’t be used everyday!!! We are getting graduate level violent words! Bound to be useful someday!
Babachita
OT
ReplyDeleteMaggie, I've been using the Duolingo app for 827 days now. Speaking is part of the lesson so that helps. I have cheated on Karsu if I watch it a day late. I use the English captions. My daughter in law grew up in Puerto Rico, but was born in Colombia. I decided I needed to learn her language for when the consuegros visit. Such a neat word. But then she had a falling out with them right after I started learning Spanish. My church is half Hispanic and one of the choir members is Mexican. I ask her help at times, and she was stumped on a phrase that was used in Papas por Convenecia. marrana parada. We narrowed it down to being an uncouth person I think.
I'm not watching too many of the violent shows, not my style. Karsu isn't too much at this point. The very first suggested Tan I watched by my daughter in law's sister in law ( I get along with her very well) was La Hija del Mariachi. That had a lot of fighting in it. I may revisit that one some day. The music was great and I knew very little Spanish at the time.
Tan =TN. I got autocorrected.

ReplyDeleteFermin dies. Enrique gets some letters that he left behind. In it he discovers that Francisco and his mother were lovers. She got pregnant by him, had a botched abortion on Francisco's demand and died as a result. So now Enrique is after Francisco.
Omar is forgiven by Elena when he explains everything that happened and why he withheld the truth, Roberto wanted it kept quiet while the investigation was ongoing.
Some guy named Diego I think, recorded the conversation between him and Francisco 20 years ago with a cell phone sticking out of his suit jacket pocket. Were smartphones a thing 20 years ago? Francisco sends a guy to get the flashdrive from Luci's place, as she has gone to him in rage about killing her parents. Fortunately Luci realizes she is being tailed and calls Natalia to go and retrieve it. She gets it and Francisco's guy wrestles it from her. Then Victoria arrives on the scene with gun drawn. Bad guy grabs Natalia though and holds a gun to her head. He's not a really bad guy, he then lets her go and takes off on his motorcycle. Victoria is thinking about shooting him but smart Natalia has downloaded the info to the cloud so they don't need it. I'm still not sure who sent Luci the flashdrive.
Adrian does give his statement but says that Alex was not with him. Meanwhile Alex and her dad arrive at the station for her to turn herself in. They run into Daniel and his parents who are leaving the station. Elena is very cruel to Alex. I think they follow her inside. When Adrian sees her ( he is in the fiscal furias office handcuffed calling his mom when he sees Alex he tells her you weren't with me. Daniel then lets everyone know, yes she was, I've remembered everything.
Enrique goes to Francisco. He pulls his gun on him.

ReplyDeleteI feel like an unfaithful spouse (married twice but never guilty of that) spending time here on Uni as I've been a solid Telemundo watcher for many years. Oh, the good old days before NBC bought them. They had three TNs in primetime in ascending levels of sex/violence. The 8PM was usually a comedy. But Karsu has me hooked.
Babachita, the one I'd like to know where I saw her before is not Reha's sister but Karsu's sister. I spent at least 20 minutes trying to find her real name to get one of those Wikis with all her roles listed. As I mentioned before, that still might not work since the title would be in Turkish.
I also got the feeling that maybe Ipek and Irmak had been friends all along. Maybe they're going with both of them being older than Karsu and thus friends when the whole "run off with your stepdaddy" happened.
Yep, Reha doesn't really want to be a single parent. He just wants Karsu back, not because he loves her. But he wants that homemaker/mother installed so either (1) he doesn't lose face with his cronies or (2) it's easier to bed other women when she's taking care of the kids.
I suspect a point is being made about Filiz's obsession with looking younger having come about because of Adnan leaving with his stepdaughter.
I can't help but feel sorry for the woman Filiz is outmaneuvering. But, yes, she ran that meeting like a corporate CEO.
And, every time they say her name on the show, I can't help but think they're saying the Spanish for happy: feliz.
I want to also add some kudos for the amazing Kat, doing TN recaps after a couple of years of studying Spanish! You rock!
Karsu
DeleteSorry I got the wrong character. It looks like Meric Aral plays Irmak. The only dizi I could find that I’ve seen with her was in Mujer (Kadin) playing Masal. She was in about 3/4 of the story, but I don’t remember her.

ReplyDeleteAs long as we're discussing Spanish, I'd like to chime in. I've been a fan of language acquisition for many, many years. I began with two years of Latin in high school and then two years of French. I loved Latin, but two years was all they offered.
I went dormant for a long time, probably spending time raising a child and always with a full-time job. I developed a passion for opera. At the San Francisco Opera you could be a standing attendee for, IIRC, $6. I stood for dozens of them at the back of the Dress Circle and even saw Plácido Domingo once. I took 2 years of Italian, but discovered the opera lyrics were in kind of dated language.
Then I had a Brazilian boyfriend for a while. Studied Portuguese for a year at the local Junior College. The relationship didn't last, but I went to Brazil for a month and had the time of my life.
As I've mentioned, I took a job with a construction company. These businesses all have a huge number of people from Mexico. I decided to enroll in the Adult School classes for Spanish. Boy did I luck out! The high school's Adult School has a family of AMAZING teachers. I moved through Beginning, Low Intermediate, High Intermediate with the son, and, finally, Advanced Conversation and Literature with the mother. Since the pandemic, we're on Zoom, but it works. I've been in the Advanced class for more than 20 years. I still don't quite consider myself fluent. If you've read up on language acquisition, you learn that it is best acquired when you're very young.
Oh, and I couldn't resist a quarter of German, since my great, great grandfather emigrated from there to Ohio. I hit the wall with German. My brain wouldn't accept verbs where part of it is near the front of the sentence and the rest of it at the end! But, just like all the other languages, I sound fluent because I have a mockingbird's ability to mimic the sounds of languages. This can get me into trouble as the person I address assumes I'm more fluent than I am.
I will say that I can carry on a decent conversation with a native Spanish speaker fairly well, and I seek out opportunities to do so. General conversation is fine, but I can stumble if the topic becomes more esoteric and I can't think of the right phrase, or at least not in time.

ReplyDeleteSergio Gets Around
Sergio is on the phone in his car telling Juanjo that he struck out with Estrella. While Juanjo tells him that Sergio himself taught him that EVERYONE has a price, Sergio backs up into Fabián's truck. Fabián is irate that he crashed into his truck while talking on his phone and that he wants his insurance to handle things. Fabián doesn't have time for that. Sergio just smirks. He needs to get his truck fixed ASAP but may have to go through the insurance coverage anyway. He calls Sergio arrogant and a jerk. He tells Estrella about the incident and when he mentions the culprit's name she admits that Sergio is Azul's father. He came to see her because he found out somehow about the money she owed to the union and after Azul called him, he thought she might be trying to black mail him. The problem is that Azul is very upset after their first meeting. He asks how she being such a wonderful woman ever ended up with a loser like Sergio. She says love is blind . . . and she was young. He suggests that maybe true love happens when one is more mature. She makes it clear ONE MORE TIME that she cannot have a relationship with him because it would hurt Erika. He tells her that he will wait for her no matter how long it takes because he loves her. Later in a café, Sergio looks at a photo of Estrella, smiles and thinks about how her life is going to change sooner than she thinks if Azul turns out to be his and she is his wife.
Erika has faith in the future and Sergio
Erika tells Teresita that she wishes she could slap Estrella like Brisa did Marina but that her problem will be solved shortly. Estrella's ex is in town. Being a millionaire, she is sure he will pay off Estrella's debt and she will go back to Mexico City.
Mystery
Estrella tells Perla that she cannot understand how Sergio knew about her debt with the union.
Brisa on her sympathy tour
Brisa is on her sympathy tour getting all the sympathy she can. Her mother tells her that you can't force love. It isn't Marina's fault . It is Gabriel's. Meche goes to see Gabriel and blames him for breaking Brisa's heart. He says he was only being honest. Brisa only saw marriage with him as a way out of her problems at home and having to go fish. Meche brings up Marina noting that she had something to do with his decision.. She makes it clear that he wasn't fair to her daughter by letting things go as far as he did when he must have known how he felt earlier. It is all his fault. She warns him if he hurts Brisa again, he will have to deal with her. She is capable of doing anything where her daughters are concerned.

ReplyDeleteRosalba's revenge continues
Perla visits her father's grave. She brings flowers and tells him how very much she misses him and how her mother still hurts because of his betrayal. It has been so tough but she forgives him for everything. She spies Rosalba in the cemetery and hides behind a grace stone to see what she is up to. Rosalba has brought flowers to her father's grave. She tells Ulises that he is the only man that she ever truly loved. She suddenly goes into a rage and shreds the flowers she has brought and the others telling him that everything would have been different if he had chosen her. Perla concludes that Rosalba was her father's lover. Later in town, Perla accompanied by by Pascual and Valentín, confronts Rosalba. She asks her if she was with her father when he had his heart attack. Rosalba takes off running and Perla and her posse chases her down and surround her. Rosalba denies being in a hotel with her father. Perla says she heard her at the cemetery and she demands that she admit that she was her father's lover. She threatens her with going to the police. Rosalba says she is sorry that she has to hurt Meche with what she is going to say but yes! she was Ulises' lover. She becomes dramatic as she says they were lovers for years and years! Perla tries to attack her accusing her of letting her father die. Pascual and Valentín separate the women. Rosalba puts the frosting on the cake of her performance by adding that she and Ulises were very very much in love and he was planning on leaving Meche for her and leaving that town. Perla insists she is lying. Rosalba adds that is why he took that loan from the union. It was to be sued to leave town. Also, the money is now all gone. Rosalba used it to pay off her own debt. The money was for her and not for Meche or her daughters. Ulises was the love of her life.

Erika tells Yazmín she isn't pulling her weight in the deal they had where she was to assist her in winning Fabián back. Yazmín is desperate for her drugs and Erika teases her with them. She informs her that she will be upholding her part of the deal and finally throws the pills on the floor for her to scramble and collect. After witnessing the exchange, Rosalba steals some of the pills from Erika's handbag knowing she can use them for something.
Gabriel comes clean with Marina
Gabriel tells Marina that he broke up with Brisa. He wasn't in love with her. It was not Brisa's fault or Marina's. It was his fault. BTW, he is falling in love with another woman. He needs to work on himself right now. Marina thanks him for having saved her and tells him he is a great guy and a fantastic father. She is there for him if he needs anything.
Estrella comes clean with Erika
When Erika demands that Estrella tells her that she feels nothing for Fabián, Estrella has to admit to Erika that she wasn't totally honest with her. She made a mistake and got confused about what she was feeling for Fabián. At the start, she didn't even get along with Fabián. Then she had feelings she didn't know how to manage. That is why she is apologizing to her. Erika tells her to keep her apologies. They only make her feel more stupid. Estrella is planning on paying off the family's debt and then going back to Mexico City. Erika says they are no longer friends.

ReplyDeleteMeche is an interesting character. I didn't expect her to go off on Gabriel like that after the advice she had given Brisa. I looked up the actress Ana Martin. Did you know she is 80 years old in real life? Her low set ears and high forehead give her an elfin appearance.
Not enough beach scenes in this episode! I can't commit to watching this at the aired time while it is daylight out and 8p.m. is the cooler part of the day here in the south. I leave my house too early in the morning to get much outside stuff done so my garden needs me in the evenings.

ReplyDeleteLately I'm getting little to no feedback on the show so I'll keep this short. I'll answer questions if anyone has any though.
Enrique doesn't kill Francisco with the gun. Francisco decides to be the sacrificial lamb and goes to the police department with Enrique saying he's the one that unilaterally tried to save his grandson from going to jail. Enrique of course is going to spin it as a plus in his campaign.
Karina is through with Enrique and when he comes to see her to tell her how everything is unraveling and she is implicated so she should worry she has a kitchen knife and threatens to use it on him if he doesn't leave. In her favor, the only thing she cares about is rebuilding Gaby's trust.
Enrique whispers to Adrian to stick to the script, grandpa is shouldering the blame.
Alex gives her statement and is arrested. Her sweet dad supports her throughout the ordeal.
Francisco is giving his untrue statement to the police when Roberto comes in with a warrant for his arrest because of the CC case. Theft and murder. Francisco has one of his spells and searches for his pills. He falls to the floor and the police (Victoria ) do CPR on him without much luck. A medic is summoned. Enrique hears the commotion and smiles as he holds Francisco pill bottle in his hand. Sweet revenge.
Memo goes ballistic at home when the police come to arrest him.
Looks like Chofis will be. Okay.

ReplyDeleteKat in SC: I smiled watching Francisco kicking the bucket LOL.
Karina needs to get her Karma anvil sooner or later!
Memo getting arrested: Good riddance!
Karsu
ReplyDeleteAnother terrific episode!
The Filiz actress just knocks me out. I loved watching her face in the scene where she was listening while Karsu explained to the kids about how difficult her mom was growing up – wonderfully done. And also the scene where she reacts to Karsu arriving at the HOA party. And wow, Karsu looked amazing.
Atilla’s reaction to the fellow flirting at the party was great too. We could see for a moment the other Atilla as he focused in on what was happening over by the hors d’oeuvres. What a laser look! And then after he fake tripped and spilled wine on the guy’s sweater, the wink from little Deniz – love it.
And our henchmen! Nattily dressed to go do some arson. Fashionable guys! But their interaction is the most fun – I loved the book review the number two guy was trying to give. I thought his name was Cedvet, but they spelled it differently in the captions, I don’t remember how.

ReplyDeleteNovelera – wow, you brought up a fascinating topic – language learning! I have thoughts! But right now I have chores. Stay tuned!
Karsu #22
ReplyDeleteMaggie the family discussion was enlightening for Feliz, but I think Karsu also was given something to think about when Feliz said not everyone has a family. I bet Feliz also did not have a great family life. On the topic of affection I can relate. My grandmother was Norwegian but not overly affectionate. My mother likewise. I don't remember many hugs between us. Sadly they both died when I was barely 21. I made a concerted effort to raise my children differently. I know they loved us but PDAs (public displays of affection) were not the norm.
Reha trying to tag along on Lale's GNO because he was so bored babysitting his kids all the time was funny. I guess Hande is out of the picture.
I got a time snippet tonight. Karsu has been there 2 months now.
I laughed when Karsu hopes she isn't like Feliz when she is older, i.e. sticking her nose in things all the time. I'm with Feliz on this one. Tilsim should be told dad did not enroll her in the school she wants to attend. Tilsim thinking she won't need a career because she will be married stung. I like how Feliz came in cracking the whip.
I also like cevdet. His latest foray into literature is crime and punishment, though he admits he has skipped some parts as it is a really long book. He's getting new words like irrevocable to use in his dialogue. So they are assassins but they do it to fight injustice. Ah the irony....

ReplyDeleteLife happens and I was away a few days, and am two episodes behind on all three telenovelas, so will catch up over the weekend. I’ve read the comments for the two nights I watched and thank everyone for the recapping and comments. I’m surprised at how much I’m enjoying Karsu as it started out so depressing. And still enjoying our beach scenes in A.Mar. Good to see more being revealed in Juegos, it seems to be winding down as bad guys are arrested, Adrian is doing the right thing thing and more is being discovered. Still a lot of mysteries to uncover.

ReplyDeleteThank you for the summary, Kat. Keeping up with three stories is tough for me. I can’t imagine how you can recap so much!
I felt sad and anxious with this episode. Things are finally falling in place, but there are still enough episodes for some surprises. I keep wondering who Berta is so terrified of. Maybe just the power of the possible new president, but it feels like more. But, we don’t have any more surprise characters, do we?
The scene where Kike is holding on to Francisco’s pills was chilling. Kike seems to be succeeding against all odds. I wonder if Mariana and/or Memo will have a role in bringing Kike down. Memo actually being Kike’s son suggests not.
The one who fascinates me is Ines. She is a powerful successor to her father and knows all the tricks and where skeletons lie.
I’m sad for Alexandra, but she has good paternal support. She must feel relief that she has finally told the truth. I keep hoping Daniel will come around. His father has compassion, Elena not yet.
This show never fails to provide twists and turns. I think the red yarn puzzle in the credits is perfect!

ReplyDeleteAfter I published my previous comment, I got to thinking some way out thoughts about Ines. I recall that in Latin America, it’s not unusual for a wife to succeed their husband in office. I think Isabela Perón is an example from Argentina. Then I remembered House of Cards, both the British and American versions. So, maybe Ines inherits Francisco’s empire, bumps off Kike, and ends up president. She has been building power. And it would be sweet revenge for Memo, Karina, etc!

DeleteI want Ines to have an anvil. She killed Leo and has been a terrible mother and sister. Sure hope she ends up in jail.
Juegos
DeleteI agree, Kat, Ines definitely earns an anvil, maybe worse than jail. I just got to thinking who might emerge from this with power and maybe she has been pulling the strings for awhile. Who scares Berta? Someone would have to take her down for it to have a telenovela ending. Fiscal Furia and Luci would get my vote. Hmmm. Maybe Karina would help them. She knows all the dirt. Then Gaby would have a happy ending with cooperative parents.

ReplyDeleteBack to the topic of language learning. What I’m thinking about is the concept that children learn language more easily.
I got my master’s in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) in 2004. We had classes in language learning theory. The year is worth noting because there are all kinds of theories, and their proponents passionately boo each other’s theories. It’s yeasty. So the whole topic is always in flux and who knows where it stands now.
At any rate when I was studying the predominant theory was Norm Chomsky’s Universal Language theory, which maintains that humans are born with a framework to hang a grammar on. This would be unique to the human species. Look at Koko the signing gorilla who learned words but didn’t seem to use any sort of syntax.
About children learning more easily: Actually what they were believing is that children seem to do so well for many reasons. For one thing, they have nothing else to do except be sponges. No mortgage, no wondering what to cook for dinner, no responsibilities. Also, they aren’t embarrassed about their efforts – they aren’t worried about making mistakes. They will repeat and repeat ad nauseum and love doing it. They have tremendous help and support from the adults around them. They are surrounded by the language they’re learning and hear it all day.
The idea at that time was that the best time for language learning is early to late teens. First, it was theorized that the universal grammar may fade some over time, but it would still be strong at that age. And teens have an added advantage that they can analyze language. You can explain parts of speech and tenses to them. So their natural abilities, paired with their ability to analyze and boosted by that being the time of life when brains are like nuclear reactors makes them language-learning whizzes.
What they can actually test is how people are able to differentiate between very tiny differences in pronunciation. It seems that ability is at its greatest in infancy and it slowly fades. That means that if you learn after, say, age 12 or more, you’re very likely to have an accent.
Karsu
ReplyDeleteKat – I loved your comments about physical affection in families. My family were WASPS with Scottish and Irish background, though the most recent immigrant was just one great-grandfather. Mostly they’d been here a long time.
There was almost zero hugging once we were teens. In fact, I remember my very warm-hearted mother being taken aback when it started to be popular for friends to hug. She didn’t like it when her friends closed in for a hug.
Watching the telenovelas I was astonished at seeing all the hugging and hearing all the I love you’s. I wondered if it was just telenovela fantasy, so I asked my Mexican friends. Oh yes, that’s the way it is, they said. One told me her teenage son was always mortified when she’d hug him in front of his friends – ha! I love seeing all that affection.
My parents grew up in Texas/Oklahoma/New Mexico and loved Mexicans. My father commented that they were much nicer people than the Americans. He noted that when they visited Mexico he hardly heard children crying. The children are always on a lap, he said, with admiration. But he himself wasn’t a lap kind of father. He was very formal.

ReplyDeleteKat, I have always liked Ana Martín and think she is giving a certain nuance to her role of Meche. She has such an expressive face and in particular her eyes. All, in all, I am enjoying this novela because it is so traditional and is pretty predictable. It is easy watching.
JUEGOS
ReplyDeleteKat, thank you for your very fine summaries this week. I just finished my weekly binge watch and enjoyed all of the episodes so much.
Loved:
Enrique basically using the title of the novela telling Inés it all was a “juego de amor y poder.”
Francisco needing his heart meds and Enrique playing with them in their bottle in a waiting room.
Memo getting arrested and squealing like a piglet thinking he was going to be able to escape all blame per usual.
Juegos
ReplyDeleteJarifa, ooh I missed that line Enrique used on Ines. As late as this show is I'm sometimes half asleep when I watch. If I weren't recapping your way binge watching would be more enjoyable. I think there are only a few more weeks left.
Did you understand why Memo was in the campaign trail with Ines? Was it just a way to keep him out of Enrique's way? I guess Memo never messed with the pills in the earlier episodes. It was just a fact finding mission for Enrique to keep tabs on him.

ReplyDeleteKat in SC: I should note that Ana Belena will be the main evil Antagonist in this upcoming Telenovela. I'm going to be excited seeing how far her character will be upping the ante against the Protagonists Fernando Colunga & Livia Brito.
Juegos
ReplyDeleteKat, this is my interpretation: Enrique was tired of babysitting Memo because he couldn’t trust him not to be a dangerous goof. Sick of him and more than happy to annoy Inés, he sent him to assist her and burden her woth his presence.

ReplyDeleteJarifa, thank you for your excellent recap of Friday's episode!
I hope to watch it tomorrow and will have your recap open and reread it as I watch.
I'm really looking forward to seeing Gabriel tell Marina "BTW, he is falling in love with another woman". The promise of their romance is one of the huge draws of this show for me.
Meche was right in her assessment of Brisa and Gabriel's romance but I liked that she stood up for her daughter as she should have. Gabriel should have told Brisa sooner but at least he spoke up now.
Jarifa, looking forward to watching tonight's show. Thank you for all you do to relate everything so clearly and thoroughly.
