Our dear Elna June has the night off. I like to think of her poolside, sipping Tequila Sunrises with sympathetic friends and practicing her flex and point technique ...
The old:
Padre Lupe won’t budge. The only one who can reveal the name of Gael’s father is “that woman”.
Thanks to Florencia’s expert Wheedle, Simper and Whine technique, Guido agrees to be her beard for a few more days in Casa Harango. The Eurotrash Landucci clan won’t be going anywhere for a while.
Lolita and Elisa (who is still dressed for the Baton Twirling Event in the Junior Miss Chile Pepper Pageant) greet the head(case) of the family with more warmth than he deserves.
Carmina, who was conspicuously absent from the “Free Augusto” Conga Line is now nowhere to be seen in the “Welcome Home Augusto” receiving line. Augusto confronts the rotten citrus in her room. He wants to see those “family jewels” she was supposedly going to sell to raise money for his bail. Reluctantly, she pulls out the small coffer from its hiding place ...
Tonight:
What is the Orange one doing with Estefanía’s jewels? Didn’t she tell him her sister had taken them all when she left with Rosendo?
Carmina babbles that Steffie left the jewels with her because she expected Rosendo would buy her new ones. Augusto treats her absurd lie with the contempt it deserves. When he stalks out of the room, her face contorts with self-pity and she throws the little chest across the room,: “¡Para lo que me han servido!” (For all the good they’ve done me!)
(You think Augusto will beg Ramona’s forgiveness for his bass-ackwards accusation of theft earlier? Oh yeah. What have you been smoking?)
Paloma returns from her coffee date with Enrique and fends off Ramona’s questions. Enrique is a good guy but Paloma only has eyes for Gael. Besides, Enrique has his own amor imposible. Who? Paloma’s not saying.
LOTS OF FOLKS COME CALLING TONIGHT:
When a chastened Begoña comes knocking on their hotel room door, the doc and his son and daughter refuse her unexpected invitation to come back home. When she leaves, obviously hurt, Doc T reams out Enrique and Sabrina for clinging childishly to their grievances. Don’t they realize how hard it was for their mother to ask them back? Are they waiting for her to get on her knees and beg? As for his own choice to live apart, that is a different matter...
Maru stops by don Lucio’s to ask after Damián’s recovery. Lucio ends up inviting Maru to join him for supper. And she accepts. (This makes me nervous. Two nice people hanging out make a bigger target than either one alone.)
Are You My Father?
Paloma is thrilled to see Gael on her doorstep. Unfortunately, he’s there to see Grandma. Bummer. Paloma is sent out of earshot and then Gael peppers Ramona with questions about Ingrid. Does Ramona know who his father was? No she doesn’t, she says, and in her firm but not unkind way, tells him not to pick fights with Lupe about this.
Paloma wants to know what the conversation was about. Ramona’s not saying.
PAJAMA PARTY
Casa Castigo
Elisa has finally changed out of the pageant costume though has wisely left her fake eyelashes in place (you never know). She remembers accepting Damián’s proposal as if it were only yesterday. (Um. Maybe it was only yesterday.) She kisses the photo of Steffie and Blanca, kisses the love amulet, and tucks both precious relics in a drawer:
“Ay, Damián, te voy a querer toda la vida.”
A tear streams prettily down her face. (I think she must have a no-snot crying clause in her contract. Very prudent, I say.)
Hacienda Harango
Damián, now in his jammies, hobbles around the bedroom obviously looking for something. Florencia, in robe and nightgown, ever-helpful, ever-present and ever-so-annoying, offers to help. He’s looking for the amulet? What’s so important about it? He had it for so many years? Ah well.
She kisses him on the mouth and wishes him goodnight. Why did she do that? he asks. Habit, she answers. Damián thinks she should find Enrique and kiss him. And he’s not reproaching her; he’s just thinks she’s barking up the wrong tree. Flor is undeterred.
Casa Tovar
It’s morning now but Begoña answers the door in robe and nightgown. The kids are back – they didn’t use their keys because they wanted their mother’s permission to come home. Begoña smiles with real warmth. The smile fades momentarily when she realizes that Edmundo isn’t with them. But she keeps it together.
AND THE NEW DAY BEGINS
Hacienda Harango
Alfonsina sits before her mirror and applies her warpaint. Toña knocks, enters meekly and delivers a message: Don Augusto is here to see her. “Why did you let that man in my house?" fumes Alfie. "He nearly killed my son!” (Well yeah, if you want to get technical about it.)
She storms into the office and orders him to leave. He won’t go until they have talked. He wants to negotiate for Elisa’s land. But why did Alfonsina offer the money to get him out of jail in the first place? What use does she have for the land?
Alfie tells him the real price Elisa paid for his Get out of Jail at a Jacked-up Bail card – she agreed to give up Damián. Apparently:
Su amor de hija fue más fuerte que su amor por Damián – y francamente, no entiendo porque tú siempre la has tratado con la punta del pie. (Her love for her father was stronger than her love for Damián – and frankly I don’t get it because you always treated her like dirt).
How can Alfie be sure Elisa will keep her word and stay away from her son? Alfie turns her dead black eyes on him: “She’s terrified you’ll try to hurt him again.”
"Perdóname", replies Augusto, abashed but also satisfied. (The Black Widow seems to have accomplished what he was unable to do – separate definitively Dam Stupid from Miss Junior Chile Peppers.) “I never meant to hurt your son.”
Casa Castigo
Elisa wears another Junior Miss pageant costume. She is not yet crying. She is still insisting that Lolita screen her calls – she’s not home to Damián. But the call that comes now is from Dam’s dam, that is Alfonsina, with a not so friendly warning. She knows that Augusto is free so Elisa better not try to pull a fast one on her (tomar el pelo). If their agreement is breached, Augusto goes back to the pokey!
Her message delivered, she hangs up abruptly.
La Iglesia
Gael apologizes to Padre Lupe for his angry words of the day before. Apology accepted with grace and affection, of course.
Gael heads off to work but is stopped at the foot of the church stairs by Kenia. When he tells her he has had no luck in his search for his father, she tells him not to give up. They’ll figure it out together. (Although she knows, right? She’s such a convincing liar, I get confused.)
They hug. At that precise moment, Augusto walks up. “You make an attractive couple” he remarks and then continues on his way.
Gael realizes that Augusto doesn’t know that he Kenia is his half-sister and he picks up on Augusto’s jealousy.
Hacienda Harango
Alfie smarms over Guido and offers to take him on a tour of the Pro Ce. Guido’s anxious to see baby bro at work.
Pettish Paolo languishes in bed, the only audience for his bare chest his none too sympathetic niece. He’s too depressed to care about Guido and Alfie. Hah! Flor gets it! He’s in love! Is it Elisa? No? Then who? He's not saying.
She smirks. For the first time in his life, Paolo is in love. And he’s suffering ...
Casa Castigo
... While the citric source of his affliction offers a cheery orange greeting to Augusto, now back home and grouchy as hell after seeing Gael and Kenia together. She leans in to kiss him and he recoils.
“Are you still upset about Estefanía’s jewels?” she asks coyly. She insists it’s really not a big deal. Maybe not, he agrees. But he has suddenly come to realize she’s not the person he thought she was. And it’s not just one thing, it’s a lot of things – like Paolo Landucci ...
Carmina kicks into high dudgeon mythomania mode: “I suppose Elisa filled your head with her lies”, she begins.
“No” says Augusto. “She didn’t say anything”.
Here Elisa enters. Now Augusto wants the story.
Elisa speaks: “A few days ago, I came out of my room and saw my aunt and Paolo kissing.”
Carmina’s mouth hangs open. She turns from Elisa to Augusto and protests:
¡Pero eso no es cierto! (But that’s not true!)
Oh man. The zest is gone, the juice has been squeezed. It’s all pulp and pits for you, OrangeHo. Because Elisa has a witness – Kenia, Gael’s sister!
Gael’s sister?
Yes, Augusto, there is a Santa Claus! Kenia and Gael are brother and sister. O frabjous day! Callou! Callay!
“No, no”, the Orange one continues to protest. Paolo was forcing himself on her. She wasn’t kissing him. (True. But do we care?)
Augusto has left the building. We catch the mean little smile on Junior Miss Chile Pepper’s face.
Hacienda Harango
Braulio slips past security (that is, his wife) and gains access to Damián. Dam stupid is stunned (stunned!) to hear that his mother has cancelled all the work that was to be done on Elisa’s lands.
La Ermita
Augusto sits alone in the cantina and downs a shot (or three) of tequila.
La Procesadora
Since Guido finds the Pro Ce so interesting and since his business in the DF is circling the drain and since Paolo has found his calling here and since Flor is going to end up marrying Damián ... (“La vida da muchas vueltas” (I’m a manipulative bitch who gets people to do what I want them to, sooner or later)) ...
...How would he like a job here?
Guido agrees to give it some thought.
La Ermita
A sad old guy and his horse. A lovely young woman emerging from a modest pink house. The old guy – and now we see it’s Augie – walks up and kisses Kenia (yes, it is she) mwa! smack on the lips. She seems surprised, maybe even shocked. But she recovers quickly: “¿Quieres pasar?” (Wanna come in?) she asks. But he is already shambling back to his horse. “Perdon” he says over his shoulder. Kenia smiles to herself.
La Iglesia
Apparently no one has had the heart to tell Ingrid that the casting is complete for the production of “Yentl” in Mérida. (Or at least that is the only explanation I have for her sidelocks.) Bueno, como sea ...
Ingrid comes calling on Padre Lupe. He tries to turn her away and refuses to hear her confession. He’s furious that she told Gael that knowing the identity of his father would get her and Gael killed. Ingrid insists that Padre’s own sister, Alfonsina, really did threaten her life.
Now Lupe comes as close to thundering as he can: “¡Mientes, mujer! ¡Mientes!” (You’re lying, woman, you’re lying!) “My sister may have many faults, but she’d never do something like that!)
But it’s true, insists Ingrid. And the threats go years back, back to the time of her pregnancy. That’s why she had to abandon Gael and leave town.
Then why didn’t she go to Rosendo? asks Lupe. “¡Contéstame!” (Answer me!)
“Because” confesses Ingrid, “Alfonsina gave me a lot of money to leave.” Now she regrets what she did and she is really, truly, cross-my-heart-and-hope-to-die earnest about wanting to recover her son. But Lupe can’t tell anyone he saw her because Alfie would kill her if she found out she was still in La Ermita.
Oh ick. Now she’s kissing his hand and begging for his help. (The sad part is he doesn’t believe the truth – that his sister is a monster – but may be buying into the lie – that Ingrid really feels something for Gael.)
Casa Castigo
When Augusto comes home, the Orange Harpy and Junior Miss Chile Pepper are engaged in a heated discussion of moral philosophy.
At Orangina’s prodding, Elisa acknowledges that Paolo was indeed forcing himself on the tía. That’s all the Orange one needed. She affects The Voice, the one with the irritating tremolo that warns us she is shoveling as fast as she can. And she tries to shift the blame to Elisa. Paolo was there to see Elisa and somehow ended up forcing himself on her.
For the second time tonight, Augusto tells her flatly: “I don’t believe you”. It’s not that Elisa and Kenia know. It’s that everyone knows. Her affair with Paolo is common knowledge.
“Whoever told you that is lying” maintains the mistress of mendacity. But it’s no use. Augusto is ready to give her her freedom so she can do whatever she likes with her life.
Carmina’s face goes all pouty and her lips begin to quiver.
A deep breath. Lie back and let yourself float in the cool waters of the cenote ...
Avances: Damián and Elisa defend their love (for five minutes). Elmer Fudd gets out his shotgun.
"Oh man. The zest is gone, the juice has been squeezed. It’s all pulp and pits for you, OrangeHo. Because Elisa has a witness – Kenia, Gael’s sister!
ReplyDeleteGael’s sister?
Yes, Augusto, there is a Santa Claus! Kenia and Gael are brother and sister. O frabjous day! Callou! Callay!"

This. All this! Inspired! Of course there are ton of other gems in this recap, but I will leave them for others to claim.
Little Miss Junior Chili Peppers is perfect!
What a wonderful treat to wake up to a Novela Maven recap.
I see things are still frustrating in La Ermita. At least Braulio got to Dam Stupid.
OT OMG:
ReplyDeleteA coffee table book about the Televisa Studios.
Thanks NM, this was hysterical and inspired. Last night had some better moments to enjoy than the night before. But there was also some major Ewwwww moments:
ReplyDelete-- Anything and everything to do with II. I had the hardest time sitting through that scene. Just wanted to take those tendrils and pull as hard as possible till her brain started oozing... well you get my drift. Don't even care she was spilling about Alfi. Knowing why she's really doing that makes me nauseous.
-- Asshat planting one on Kenia. So I guess we're going there and Kenia liked it. Kudos to one of our few smart thinking characters--how fast did Gael pick up on Asshat feelings for 'sis? Didn't seem too "aghast" either which was funny.
Fun items:
-- Paolo sad scene. He can stay as sad as he wants if we get those languishing in bed scenes on a regular basis.
-- Guido may be sticking around for good. I'm down with that. He's a bit of a cutie. Maybe Alfi will get some and stop being so bitter.
-- Can't believe I'm saying this, but the kiddies coming home to Be-gon. Is it me, or did the actress really look different as she came to see the clan? Softer somehow and less "strained" looking. Was rather interesting to see that subtle change-nice job by the actress.
--Asshat actually using the brain he was given at birth. The only time I've actually enjoyed watching this guy (except for the kiss.)
-- Lucio and Maru sitting in a tree....
-- Gael. I know I'm pathetic. But I enjoy his scenes so much no matter who he's playing off of.
So I'm betting that tonight we get the Dam blow off. Hopefully if he gets all pithy and neck-strainy with Elisa, Gael will just club him one. I'm fine with that.
EJ-- if you're checking in, have one of those cocktails for me. Off to work.
NovelaMaven: Finally able to read a recap and fortune shined on me as it was yours. The sunshine and snark was spectacular: "Elisa (who is still dressed for the Baton Twirling Event in the Junior Miss Chile Pepper Pageant)", "head(case)"and the conga line references were amazing. What a wonderful summary!
ReplyDeleteAgain, I haven't been able to read the recaps and am sure this has likely been noted recently, but I am seeing and sensing a slightly edgier, cooler Elisa. Loved she outed Orangina and Paolo - I like seeing her feisty and unafraid. Now, if she had just stood up to Alfonsina. But give the devil her due: "(Her love for her father was stronger than her love for Damián – and frankly I don’t get it because you always treated her like dirt" was spot on and unfortunately seems to be true.
Begoña was a sympathetic character last night. Daisy, ITA that there was a dramatic character shift. I think the actress is fabulous. The question is - was it just a momentary lapse?
I can't tell Kenia's truths from lies...
Thanks again. This was just great.
Diana
Lucio and Maru- As you said NM, this is indeed disconcerting. I'm sure Maru knows about all sorts of happenings at the Pro Ce. If she and Lucio put their heads together and compare notes they will end up with a huge target on their backs.
ReplyDeleteNovela Maven, what a treat to find a prize winning recap from you. I loved every since word. You wit has been missed.
ReplyDeleteRosemary Primera
Delightful recap, NM! It was clever all the way through, but I have to admit my favorite line was "Elisa is not yet crying."
ReplyDeleteNovelaMaven - Thank you for the recap. I'll watch my recording later , over breakkie.
ReplyDeleteSara - I saw something in TIME about that Telerisa book, too. Looks interesting.
NovelaMaven- This recap was absoulutely wonderful. Sara mentioned two of my favorite lines.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the blinders are falling from Augie's eyes when it comes to Carmeany. Let's hope he starts to become enlightened about other things too.
Alfie was dead on right about Elisa loving Augie (for no good reason) more than she loves Dam. Maybe that's the point of the writers letting Elisa give in to Alfie's damands so easily. The thing she wants the most in this world is her father's love. How sad.
But Augie deciding that it was more in his interest to go along with Alfie's plan, since it means Dam and Elisa will be separated, shows that he loves his pride more than he loves his daughter. He isn't able to follow through and make the same kind of sacrifice for his daughter as she has made for him. He should at least tell Elisa why he wants her separated from Dam (his false belief about their sibling status). However, I think he would still be dead set against them, even if he didn't believe they were siblings.
Great stuff. "Casa Castigo" por supuesto!
ReplyDeleteI think that BeGoneYa is having a momentary lapse. Leopards (of the human kind) don't change their spots until and unless they want to. Unlike Rogelio of LQNPA I don't think she wants to.
Elisa is going to lose her lands. She must have cashed the checque, so there is no turning back.
She also needs to turn Orangina's room inside out to find that envelope.
Lol Doris- Time magazine was my source, too!
ReplyDeleteExcellent, Novela, Thank you, thank you!
ReplyDeleteSara: I may be heading to the bookstore at lunch and see if a copy of said book just might be available for perusing. My, my, that cover.
ReplyDeleteThanks NovelaMaven, I love your recaps. This is a real treat. I have mixed emotions about my favorite lines which begin with:
ReplyDelete"Gael’s sister? Yes, Augusto, there is a Santa Claus!"
Hilarious, but then this lead to... The Kiss.
I guess I knew it was coming but for me it was all wrong. Bad timing. Bad venue. Bad kiss. Why not a sweet peck on the forehead? Instead it was clumsy, loutish, and brutish without proper predicate. All in all a setback for his supporters. It may be paper bag time.
I suppose it could have been worse. A gentle tentative sensuous well thought out kiss on the lips might have been even more disgusting. I'm afraid that will not be his last embarrassment for us. More Tequila, ladies? No more Tequila for you, Augusto.
I know that as an Augusto backer I shouldn't cast stones, but it looks to me that Guido is beginning to look a bit disheveled.
Would someone please hide that shotgun?
Carlos
Carlos, if by disheveled you mean, hot and shirtless, I say give us more of that...
ReplyDeleteYes, Carlos, THE KISS, was, “ clumsy, loutish, and brutish without proper predicate.” Ugh. Make my tequila a double please. I’m pleased with our friends at Caray though, no End Zone celebrations at the expense of our table, at least so far!
ReplyDeleteThis is not the day to advance a theory in support of Augusto, but oh well, here I go! Could it be that Augusto is very reluctant to tell Elisa the true reason that he doesn’t approve of the pairing is because he knows that the news that he isn’t her father and that her mother really was the ramera that almost everyone thinks she is, would be HEARTBREAKING? Could he possibly be trying to protect her from a terrible truth. He has said that he burned the (fake) DNA tests so the truth wouldn’t get out! Oh well, I gave it a try!
NovelaMaven, I don’t think I’ve had the pleasure of one of your recaps.....outstanding! “ I particularly liked, “She (Carmina) affects, The Voice, the one with the irritating tremolo that warns us she is shoveling as fast as she can.” So well said and so true!
Daisy, the Ruiz book isn't out yet. It's being released the 31st of July.
ReplyDeleteO frabjous day! Callou! Callay! NM wrote a recap! Hooray! Hooray!
ReplyDeleteThis was one of many gems: "I think she must have a no-snot crying clause in her contract. Very prudent, I say.)"
La Paloma
Recapper, you made me laugh! Everything you wrote was right on the mark!!
ReplyDeleteAssgusto. Good grief. What a selfish, self centered man. What a stupid man. Nothing he really does is for his daughter; nothing.
That kiss that ugly man planted on Kenia was a bit much and not in a positive direction, either. I like Kenia, but there is something about her that bears watching. She has seen too much of her mother's shenanigans to not have learned a thing or two about manipulation. Whatever does she see in a penniless, selfish, ugly, abusive man?
Redemption Hill is nowhere in sight for this abusive, stupid man.
Thanks Blue - didn't notice that release date. Darn, was looking forward to an "educational" lunch break.
ReplyDelete"it looks to me that Guido is beginning to look a bit disheveled."
There's disheveled ewww, and then there's disheveled awwww, if you know what I mean. Guido falls in that latter category methinks.
Wow what a treat having you as a guest recapper today, NovelaMaven!
ReplyDeleteWhen that snark was flying by me so fast it was making my head spin, I had to scroll down to see who was subbing today. And no wonder! Who but the queen of snark herself.
Loved the junior miss chile pepper bits and the Alf and Ass bits! It was great!
So many interesting comments and so many generous words this morning -- thank you so much, fellow Passion Pitters!
ReplyDeleteSara, my sister in snark, your praise goes straight to my head. And I agree, Lucio and Maru know too much for their own good. Oy vey.
DaisynJay, definitely major Ewww moments. I'm also loving Mark Tacher in this role. (You may remember that I winced every time he came on screen in Triunfo but now I realize it was the part, not the actor.
Diana, So nice to see you around again. I too was impressed by NN's Begoña last night. The character finally became interesting to me and even sympathetic.
Does Elisa really love Augusto more than Dam? I wonder. Maybe it's her sense of filial duty that is stronger than her sense of entitlement to personal happiness.
Rosemary Primera, Aw shucks. Your comment brings me back to the old Clon days. (BTW, did you notice that Mauricio Ochmann is coming back in a remake of "La Perla Negra" called "Rosa Diamante"?)
Novela Maven! So nice to have you back! I think I recognized your quick wit before I saw your name at the bottom! :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite laugh out loud section:
Apparently no one has had the heart to tell Ingrid that the casting is complete for the production of “Yentl” in Mérida.
And the "Miss Habernero Chilli Peppers" outfit. PERFECT!
You've always had that ability to directly translate the EXACT line that I didn't quite catch. In this case, the direct hit from Alphie about Elisa's love for Assgusto being stronger than her love for Dam Stupid and Assgusto treating Elisa like dirt.
My one comment to add is that Alfie must, on some level, respect Elisa for standing up for her father, despite his poor treatment of her, and for making a sacrifice for her father. And her comment about Elisa sticking to her word because she's afraid of what Asgusto would do to Damian also shows that Alfie knows Elisa has Damian's best interests at heart. If Elisa were the gold digging ho Alfie says she is, nothing would have pried her away from Dam's fortune.
Katy
Carlos, I agree with you. I find Guido to be very attractive, but his hair has been looking too greasy lately.
ReplyDeleteBlue Lass, I love your preference for minimalism and restraint. I'm afraid I did run off at the mouth this time though I kind of like the small, subversive zingers myself.
ReplyDeleteHi Doris, Enjoy the show and the recap!
Vivi, Thanks so much! About Augusto's mania to keep E & D apart -- remember that he still believes Steffie cheated on him with Rosendo. So even if Elisa is Augie's own daughter, Dam is the son of the man who destroyed his happiness. Or so he thinks.
Let's give him some credit too. He may not want any connection to the familia Arango but he isn't personally vindictive towards Damián the way Alfie is towards Elisa. (Well, attempted homicide aside...)
Urban, I hope Begoña's change is lasting. Yes, real people are amazingly resistant to change; but personal epiphanies are the stuff of art -- and also of shlocky novelas. So maybe ...
I had the impression that Elisa put up her lands as collateral for the loan. So if she pays Alfonsina promptly, she will be able to keep them. Did I get that wrong?
Emilia, Thanks so much. And I appreciated your kind welcome back to the CarayCaray fold the other day.
Carlos, Thank you! I enjoyed your aesthetic analyis of The Kiss. Yes, it was definitely Hobbesian. (Oh wait, that would be nasty, brutish and short. Well, that works too.)
As for Guido's disheveled look, perhaps he's having his hair done at Sabrina's estética. Ni modo. He's still cute as a button.
Sandy, ¡Mucho gusto! Y gracias. I kind of like your benefit of the doubt Augusto thinking. It makes sense with his hiding the results that Carmina went to so much trouble to fake.
La Paloma, amiga, I am at this moment chortling in my joy at your comment. Thank you!
Anon 10:39, oh my yes, Kenia does bear watching. So glad you liked the recap.
Audrey, You are too kind. But I really think it was the presence of the demon woman Alfonsina that was making your head spin!
Katy, Thank you! And I think you're on the money about Alfie's regard for Elisa. No love lost, clearly, but she knows a formidable opponent when she sees one.
ReplyDeleteAh, NM, let's face it. We were cringing at pretty much everyone in Triunfo after awhile.
ReplyDeleteThe more I think about it, the more I think Guido is suffering from the same problem as our dear Paloma--too much product in a hostile environment. Plus the casual clothes-- he THOUGHT he was only on a brief little va-ca with Flo to check on Dam. Hopefully, he has his more dapper looking outfits sent over if he takes the job from Alfi. ( Please, lord, no plaids bought at the local mart.)
"Ah, NM, let's face it. We were cringing at pretty much everyone in Triunfo after awhile."
ReplyDeletehahaha. So true, Daisy.
As for Guido's fashion crisis -- if he agrees to work for Alfie, he'll have a lot more than plaid shirts to worry about. (O ye telenovela gods, spare this nice man from the Black Widow!)
Ni hablar, Daisy! Guido in the requisite plaid shirt would really put me off my feed.
ReplyDeleteNovela Maven, thank you for giving EJ a much needed break so she could dip her dainty digits in the cement cenote. It is wonderful to be able to enjoy your humor again.
ReplyDeleteYay! Guido stay in town please please please? But don't turn into a bad guy, OK?
Perhaps my favorite line is one of your humblest: "She is not yet crying." This, to me, sums up Miss Junior Chili Peppers perfectly. Elisa is either crying, or not yet crying. Hey, I just read Blue Lass's comment to the same effect. Blue Lass...Hermana!!
daisynjay, I agree that Begona looked somehow sweeter last night. Good acting! Diana, I think she must be a wonderful actress because she really seems to maintain her own character amongst all the other stupendous actors.
NM, thanks so much for your spectacularly hilarious recap. I also think that if Elisa pays the debt she will get her lands back.
NM: Being relatively new to this game, I do not know if I have ever read one of your recaps. This one was impressive. The tone was great; especially “Miss Chile Pepper”, “conga line”, “frabjous” and much more.
ReplyDeleteOkay. Now about THE KISS. First, I am not at Assgusto’s table. He is an abuser and has slapped L’il Miss Chiles around too much for me. (although, it seems that charchetas(?) are expected and celebrated in TN’s) anyway.. back to the point. Ladies out there, speaking as what I am – an old man – I totally understand and sympathise with an unhappy, lonely, sexually confused clutz trying to express his confused feelings in an admittedly unattractive and messy display. Give the guy a break! And my kudos to the actor for doing a good job playing it this way. Now, a good question is if kenia is playing some kind of game, and why. If she is, I cannot figure it.
In the same “defend-a –poor-guy” line, I am also liking Enrique. He went to school, he submitted to a rotten job, he went for it with flo, he stood up for his father, he went back to his mom on his father’s request. He’s a good guy – maybe not a good shirtless guy. I would put him with Paloma any day, although I don’t think we are going there.
Mod Ant
Mod Ant, welcome!! Thank you for commenting. I know Carlos and the others will welcome you for a visit at their table even though you don't want to sit there. I hope you going to join us at the Tequila Sunrise table; we are also buying pitchers of cerveza for those who don't care for tequila. Pretty soon the cantina will be overflowing with us.
ReplyDeleteI admire your sticking up for the poor guys. They need help right now.
And yes, isn't Novela Maven a treasure? Her recaps are delightfully delicious from the title to the last sentence.
"unhappy, lonely, sexually confused clutz"
ReplyDeleteMod Ant, WELCOME! And you totally nailed Assgusto. Drinks on the house for you!
Mod Ant, sounds like you have been watching our Passion Pit from the beginning. Welcome.....thanks for chiming in! I think the Augusto actor is doing a wonderful job too, even his horse was playing the part, he looked tired, confused, old and defiantly had flabby abs! On the kiss, good or bad technique, Kenia is a minor and Augusto knows that! The next time he hits bottom, he needs to go down to the cenote and swim around a bit, the gals down there don’t like him, but they would give him a sympathetic ear!!!!
ReplyDeleteIs Kenia playing a game? I’ve been asking that myself. Most of us want to like her, but personally, I can’t get a complete handle on her, she seems to be working several angles. As usual, (!) I’m hoping for the best!
Again, welcome Mod Ant and all the anons who are sharing your thoughts with us!
All the murders/deaths on this show have been "accidents":
ReplyDeleteEstefenia & Rosendo=car crash
Blanca=in the wrong place at the wrong time
Paloma's Mom=???
Alfie doesn't want to get her hands dirty so she turns to Gabino.
Gabino doesn't want to get his hands dirty so he turns to Horacio.
It seems to me that while Alfie may not be capable of outright murder, she sets into motion a chain of events which can run amok with fatal results. Same thing with Carmeana and Gabino. Are any of these characters capable of murder in cold blood?
Katy
I believe Kenia genuinely has a thing for Augusto. For some reason she had an immediate attraction to him and it has been pointedly remarked by more than one character that she tends to be attracted to older men. Maybe she is playing a game of sorts, but I think her feelings for Augusto are genuine.
ReplyDeleteSo Augusto has now had *three* women attracted to him, for completely unfathomable reasons. I'm afraid my beanie's just not big enough.
ReplyDeleteNovela Maven:
ReplyDeleteMs. Maven takes her bow to the sound of thunderous applause—and the rattling of many a fake pearl...
Thank you for this perfect recap. You are the best. I so appreciate having a rest-break last night.
Some of my favorites follow:
'Thanks to Florencia’s expert Wheedle, Simper and Whine technique, Guido agrees to be her beard for a few more days in Casa Harango.'
Big snort. It is too sad when I am starting to like this persistent whiner as a better choice for Damian than our protagonista.
'Carmina, who was conspicuously absent from the “Free Augusto” Conga Line is now nowhere to be seen in the “Welcome Home Augusto” receiving line.'
Great picture, Maven. I find myself, for only this one time, in sympathy with the rotten citrus (does anything smell worse than a moldy orange?) in not welcoming 'Gusto Catfood with open arms.
'“Ay, Damián, te voy a querer toda la vida.” A tear streams prettily down her face. (I think she must have a no-snot crying clause in her contract. Very prudent, I say.)'
Another gem, NM. First of all, how would Damian know that she feels this way. She has just abandoned him days after he was groin shot by her bad dad, so she could get bail money for her bad dad, who neither likes nor trusts her. That sounds like a bad country western song.
The great lines are too many for me to list. It is so great to have you back, Novela Maven. Thanks again for this recap.
Elna June
Sylvia, I agree with you, Kenia genuinely likes Augusto. Even Kenia’s madre, (talk about a ovum [sperm] donor) saw that! I’m just not sure about the money part of it all!
ReplyDeleteSylvia:
ReplyDeleteOnly a true friend could call any part of me dainty. Hahahaha.
I agree. Kenia has a real thing for Augusto. And Blue, like you I find it unfathomable. 'Gusto Catfood is still catfood to me.
Carlos, I have an emergency shipment of plain brown paper bags on the way over to your table. I think you folks should be commended for your compassionate and hopeful attitudes.
EJ
Sandy:
ReplyDeleteYou found a perfect way to refer to ING, "talk about a ovum [sperm] donor". That is just about all she gave Kenia.
EJ
I loved the recap! I LOL'ed at all the citrus references and the Yentl casting. I usually record the novela and watch it during the day, but my kids are now on summer vacation and it's harder to watch with them around...they're a bit too young for Elisa's Miss Junior Chilli Pepper costumes. And shirtless men.
ReplyDeleteAlfie hit the nail on the head with Augusto...Elisa would do anything for her father, despite all the hell he's put her through. Kind of glad I didn't see Cat Food kissing Kenia...I can't make heads or tails of Kenia.
Cap'n Sylvia, As always, thanks for your comment -- as delicious as the soft flesh of a perfectly ripened avocado.
ReplyDeleteElna June -- anyone seeing your avatar is aware of the daintiness of your distal digits. And anyone who has read your fabulous recaps and equally insightful comments is aware of the delicacy of your mind. Thank you for you kind words.
Mod Ant, Let me chime in on welcoming you to the blog. Thank you for your generous comment. I do like your take on Augusto.
By the way, I'm liking Enrique more and more these days too. It seems as if the whole Tovar family is undergoing an emotional growth spurt. Is it too much to hope that it's contagious? (Arangos, Castañons, Landuccis -- heads up!)
Aw thanks, Jenbeizaie. If I had young kids at home, I wouldn't want them watching this either. Televisa has a patent on a weird combo of prudery and porn -- or so it has always seemed to me.
ReplyDeleteI love that we have no idea at any moment what Kenia will do next or what her motives are.
ReplyDeleteHere's what I see is genuine:
-She wants to be near her brother and be loved by him.
-She is drawn to Augie, despite his lack of money or youth.
-She is disgusted with her mother. I'm not going to say hate, because despite what a rotten mother Ingrid is, I still think that Kenia loves her, but won't admit it.
-She has a bubbly, can-do attitude about most things. No sitting around and wringing her hands for this girl. She goes after what she wants.
This is where it gets confusing:
-Kenia loves money and possessions, like her car, and she's not above a scam/blackmail to get it.
-Despite wanting to get close to and help her brother, she lies to him about knowing who his dad is.
-She did NOT agree to a deal with Ingrid to help her get close to Gael, yet she has not unmasked Ingrid completely to Gael.
-She's not above scamming her mother for money, in order to help her brother or Augie.
-She tries to put her brother's love life in order (telling Paloma to fight for him), to ensure his happiness (since she knows Elisa loves Dam).
-She is not above lying to a priest, and seems to feel no guilt about it.
-If you're friend with Gael, then you're her friend (hence reaching out to Elisa and Paloma).
Vivi, when did Kenia learn that Rosendo is Gael's dad? I don't doubt that she knows but I just don't recall how she knows.
ReplyDeleteCarlos
Carlos- I think she figured it out when Alfie paid off Ingrid to leave town. But you're right Carlos that the two of them haven't really had explicit conversations about Rosendo. It could be that Kenia doesn’t feel like she can with 100% certainty say that Rosendo was his father. But she could tell what she knows about who paid Ingrid to leave town recently. Gael would be smart enough to put the pieces of the puzzle together (even if the HUGE clue of the blood type has gone right over his head).
ReplyDeleteCould she have concluded that because Gael and Damian have the same rare blood type?
ReplyDeleteThanks for this great recap NM. It's so nice to see your work! Others have mentioned my favorites but I must say this was a delight. I also really enjoyed your take on why Elisa sacrificed her happiness for her father. Family loyalty however, misguided is typically a powerful motivator in TNs.
ReplyDeleteSupporters of Elisa's Dad, Lo siento mucho. The kiss was que asco to me and breached all types of decorum. Have another round on me.
I think Vivi has got it right--she and Irritating had the long discussions on Alfi buying her off and trying to get rid of her, so it may have been easy to deduce that Rosendo must be baby-daddy. I don't ever recall his actual name being mentioned between them.
ReplyDeleteThe rare blood type issue is perhaps going over everyone's head because they can't fathom that Rosendo could be involved with yet another woman, and this one had a spawn ( a cute spawn, but nonetheless...) The whole emphasis has always been Steffie and Rosendo. Plus, Gael probably feels it had to be someone either long gone that no one remembers in town since he's never had a clue about it, or maybe someone rather unsavory that was hushed up. The fact no one will tell him still just feeds into that.
Boy I would love a twist where Gael was Rosendo's natural son, and it turns out that Alfi got knocked up by someone else and Dam isn't Rosendo's. Ok, I've been watching too many TN's.
NM!!! awesome awesome recap!! loved the humor all over it!
ReplyDeletetwo of my favs are?
little miss chilli pepper references;
(You think Augusto will beg Ramona’s forgiveness for his bass-ackwards accusation of theft earlier? Oh yeah. What have you been smoking?)
"He nearly killed my son!” (Well yeah, if you want to get technical about it.)
but really, all over entertaining! loved your take on the Gael and Kenya are sisters news spilled to Augusto... Xmas in june for the guy!!
sorry have not been able to comment on the comments, busy taking care of daughter after she had day surgery this morning... hopefully everything will continue going well so i can do my recap tonight... either real-time typing away during watching the ep or taping the show... hopefully the 2nd one...
thanks again!
Vivi:
ReplyDeleteWhat an excellent analysis of Kenia's character. She is a mixed bag and that is a fact. I think you have her nailed—she is ING's daughter and has learned to be without conscience about manipulating and lying to get what she wants or needs in the moment and she is also completing sincere about caring for Gael and wanting him to be happy. I'll bet she proves to be a fierce ally, but perhaps not a stalwart one. You miss nothing, Vivi.
EJ
Karen, thank you! Yeah, the Kenia/Augusto thing's not pretty to watch. (Maybe it wouldn't be quite so icky if the producers hadn't chosen to have the actor wearing a dead muskrat on his head. Do they give awards for worst hair-do's in a novela? They should. They could call them the Frizzies.)
ReplyDeletedaisynjay, early on in the novela, Alfie complained about how much she had to endure just to get pregnant and how her pregnancy endangered her life -- all to GIVE A SON to the ungrateful Rosendo. If Rosendo's not Dam's father, I'd look for some narcissistic fertility doctor who was treating rich women in the 1980's. :D
On Monday's show, Ingrid joked (?) to Kenia that if she snared Damián, then the two of them would be in a position to grab the entire Arango estate. In contrast, by Ingrid's engratiating herself to Gael, she would at best be aiming for only 50% of the family fortune.
The only way Gael is the ticket to half of the Arango inheritance is if Rosendo is his father. This conversation (and earlier ones) would make no sense unless Kenia were fully aware of that fact.
But like Vivi and Carlos, I can't recall WHEN she found out but it's clear that she KNOWS.
Marta, I hope all is going well with your daughter's surgery and recovery.
ReplyDeleteJust say the word and one of us can throw out bullet points for Wednesday.
Thanks for the generous words! So glad you liked the recap.
Ditto Marta. I hope all is well with your daughter.
ReplyDeleteSending good vibes your way, Marta.
ReplyDeleteMarta, you are having a tough time of it lately. How many balls are you juggling right now? I hope things go well for your daughter, that's the most important thing of all.

AMEN!!!! I just spent an hour yelling at the tv!
Gah! Not on for another two hours here, but the previews are not positive. (Not that I expected them to be.)
ReplyDeleteMake sure you only throw pillows and soft things. You wouldn't want to destroy your TV. Just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteMy TV is a piece of crap, still there is the hassle of having to buy a new one, the cost...
ReplyDeleteOK, I'll be careful. Thanks for the heads up amiga. I just poured myself a glass of wine so I should be plenty mellow by the time I dive into the Passion Pit.
Passion pit is right for tonight's ep.
ReplyDeleteWhich I just posted for Marta. Read it and weep folks.
