Weekend Discussion: The Healers

Despite all the medical misinformation we get in novelas, we do get some good doctors who fight for their patients' well-being.  Herewith are examples:

Ignacio Lopez Tarso and Jacqueline Andere as father and daughter cardiologists in Angeles Blancos:
Fernando Colunga in Abrazame Muy Fuerte

Fabian Robles in Soy Tu Duena:

Alejandro Avila in La Que No Podia Amar

Aaron Diaz and Ana Brenda Contreras in Teresa:

Tonio Mauri in Teresa:

Jorge Salinas in La Esposa Virgen:

David Ostrosky in En Nombre del Amor (while making a house call)

Alexis Ayala in Abismo de Pasion:

Braulio Castillo (hijo) in Aurora:

Refael Novoa in Corazon Abierto:

Scarlet Ortiz and Jorge Poza in Rafaela:

No scrubs or lab coats for Fernando Colunga in Amor Real:

or for Ernesto LaGuardia in Alborada:

No scrub or white lab coat pictures found for the following, but they are worth mentioning:

Rafael del Villar in Duelo de Pasiones
Cesar Evora in Triunfo del Amor
Otto Sirgo in La Esposa Virgen
the doc who always patched up the Reyes brothers in Fuego en la Sangre*

We now also include the spiritual healers we adore.  If only real priests all were like the ones in our stories.

Diego Olivera in Triunfo del Amor:

Cesar Evora in El Privilegio de Amar:

Salvador Sanchez in Mi Pecado:

Rene Casados in Abismo de Pasion (with all the grey he got as Padre Tadeo in FELS):

Arturo Peniche in En Nombre del Amor:

later as obispo in the same story:

Hugo Macias Macotela in Pasion and En Nombre del Amor:

the late Julio Monterde in Corazon Salvaje (1993):

Jorge Cao in Zorro la Espada y la Rosa:

Sadly, I couldn't find any vestment photos of
Gustavo Rojo in Triunfo del Amor
Roberto D'Amico who was the bishop in Fuego en la Sangre and the Cardinal in Triunfo del Amor
Saul Lizaso in Gitanas

*This actor also played Pablo Montero's commanding officer in Duelo de Pasiones.

What does this show?  We need more female doctors!

  1. Thank You for putting that up Urban Anthropologist. Glad to see that pic of Sinthia sanwiched between Ernesto and Gustavo.

We need some pics of the females now since you did the guys and the healers.

  2. Thanks UA!! was Hugo Macias also the priest in Cuando me enamoro? i might be wrong there

  3. Yes he was, Marta. He is or will also be in Refugio.

I'll do a female photo gallery some other week. Since most of our readers are female it will probably be one with beautiful dresses. I'm building a file of wedding photos which would be a subset of that. Not that the guys will be disappointed, as most of said dresses will either show plenty of cleavage or be very tight.

  4. BTW, Marta, I just checked Hugo Macias' resume again and he was in My Mexican Shivah as a rabbi!

  5. Great pics UA!

I think the lead in Rafaela was a doctor but I don't know if you got that novela in the US last year.

  6. Hugo Macias in Cuando probably would not qualify in this list as he was not much of a "Healer" there. Too busy gossiping. But, I bet his niece, Dr. Tatas, will be in the female one (wearing yellow).

As a relative newbie to tn's I love seeing some of our (somewhat) current friends (Efrain, Rogelio, Padre Chisme, Ana Paula, Beltbuckle)in past roles.

Thanks for the White Coat parade, UA!

  7. Rafael Novoa played Dr. Andrés Guerra in Corazón Abierto. This terrific Columbian remake of Grey's Anatomy was shown twice in the US - on Telemundo I think. This was the show that got hubby and me hooked on watching telenovelas, in spite of the exotic Columbian accents. We enjoyed it even more than the original!

    Rafeal Novoa in Corazón Abierto

BTW, the Columbian producer/creator of that TN was the original creator of Betty La Fea, which morphed into hundreds of versions including the Mexican La Fea Más Bella and the US Ugly Betty series.

  8. Oh, and thanks for leaving out Dr. He-who-shall-not-be-named!!!

  9. Arturo Peniche showed up in Cuando Me Enamoro as Bishop Juan Cristóbal. This was his character from En Nombre De Amor where he was Padre Juan Cristóbal. Pretty cute - it involved flashbacks from the original TN as the bishop told his personal story to Renata and Jero as they sought to stop their annulment proceedings.

  10. Audrey,, gracias. I just added Rafael Novoa. Since I didn't see that novela, I wonder if he was the Patrick Dempsey character (not that that would be a surprise).

I deliberately left out all the ones with flexible ethics, to put it politely.

What I find frustrating when doing the searches is how many irrelevant results happen, especially if you need to use the word "telenovela" in the search.

  11. I like the doctor picture of Rafael, Audrey. He doesn't look as "vacant" as he did on El Tal.

LOVED Ugly Betty! And LOVED the guest appearance of Padre Juan Cristobal even though I didn't watch En Nombre de Amor. The excitement was contagious!

  12. I hope Rene Casados doesn't end up being typecast as a priest from now on; he's so versatile. In fact, I'm revising a choice in last week's discussion about Star Trek and deciding to flip him with Alejandro Avila so that he would play Sarek, Spock's dad.

The late Julio Monterde played a priest so many times he was probably qualified to actually conduct mass.

I also omitted those priests who were members of the Inquisition in novelas de epoca.

    Yep, you nailed it!

  14. UA thank you for this new list. It's fun seeing these actors. In "Cuidado con el ángel" William Levy was a psychoanalyst turned surgeon (don't ask). Unfortunately I can't find any pictures of him dressed in a lab coat.

  15. I couldn't find lab coat shots of Rene Strickler, either. Thought of him when someone else mentioned Mariana de la Noche in another discussion.

  16. It's too late now, but we forgot Gabriel Soto who was good guy doctor Alonso, in Querida Enemiga.

Add Dr. Hernan Palacios, too, the not-a-hot-body doctor, but certainly a good one, who pined after Victoria in Sortilegio.

  17. P.S. I didn't like Abrazame Muy Fuerte at all, but your picture of Fernando makes me want to take another look.

  18. I mostly enjoyed Abrazame Muy Fuerte for Pablo Montero, whose voice I had just discovered. When I finally saw that princely face I was hooked.

  19. And who could ever forget Sofia Vergara as the hot doc in "Fuego?"
