Pasión - 4 April #81 - Everyone Wants The Baby But What Will They Do With One?
The Mass for the deceased is planned. Ascanio goes to ask Jemena's boss if she can get off to go to the family gathering at Justo's. Meanwhile Justo and Santiago have jumped off their horses to have an afternoon snack (merendar).
Off in Garbancilla, Camila speaks really good baby soothed by mommy talk as she tells the bulge under her peasant skirt that it will be the best loved baby, health and strong and someday, someday they will find baby's Papa.
Back at the snack shack, Santiago at least acknowledges that he is bringing it up too soon, but how about me getting it on with Camilla. Uhhh, no Justo of the now and then vacant stare [Ed note, looks like those nasty little TIA's to me folks, seen 'em, know 'em] but he expresses his gratitude to Santiago for taking this interest in his wayward daughter. The two of them divide up this sweet pie and discuss her fate as though she were not a human being or at least not an adult, but would Don jorge approve? Santi on his moral, macho best says "it is written" that sooner or later he and Camila would be husband and wife. He doesn't tell us where it is written, like the men's room wall or ??? Justo does ask him about the baby. Camila expects to keep it and he has told her she can (shoot, should have told her she could have a puppy or pony instead). But Santi DECIDES that it is not the baby's fault that he is a pirate pup and he would raise it and love it along with Ana Maria who is pledged to Camila by the dying Grita as her last wish. Sounds good, let's eat!
La Paisana is tearfully telling Pablo about her troubled motherhood with little Diego, then Pablo then little Margarita. She was a single parent working as a wait person or maid, never enough money. Along came a spider, oops a rich widow lady who tricked her into abandoning her children and leading a life in a brothel. The woman kept tricking her into thinking she would get her children back soon. Pablo still furious with her for making him feel abandoned his whole life asked why if she knew where he was, she didn't come to find him long ago. She was so ashamed. Now she only wants him to know she loves him and wants him to know her truth. Pablo starts to soften then stomps out of the room. This has all been spoken near the bed of the prostrate Ricardo who LP now notices is awake and asks him if he heard everything. Sure did, he answers. Do you think he believed me adn that he will forgive me? Everyone needs someone special. He needs you and you need him.
The Mass for the Diseased gets underway with all the usual suspects in the lineup, make that front row. Notice how the damas are all in black dresses and veils except Lis who wears screaming Clorox white on every inch of her expensive dress and veil. Ascanio comes in a bit late and makes eyes at Manuela as he sits down. A prayer (plegaria) is sung and a sermon given about Rita being called to God;s side three months ago now. Afterward as the gentry pass outside first, Uriel catches up with Ursula and wonders if they might not start up seeing each other again... Oh no she is so not interested. [Ed.'s disappointment that they won't move to Upton and become undertakers and have children named Uriah, Uma and Umberto - oops sorry, back to the not so sad tribute to Grita.] Justo tells Santiago they will have a simple meal back at the house not to celebrate but to remember her, and heck they have to eat anyway. Santi says let me know and goes off rather detached. Jimena makes up for it by being very enthused about being at the gathering.
Speaking of meals and not celebrating, La Font whines again at Jorge that they need to have a dinner together so the families don't become enemies. Jorge returns this petulance with an okay so let's do it next week and Sofia will deal with it.
At the Justo table, the forbidden subject of Cami continually comes up. Vasco opines that Camila must be really lonely and they would all like to see her. Jemena is enthused and Justo looks like he is about to lose control even though the new Lord of the Manor is at the table with little Paco breaking through the most times with the voice of truth and reason like, well, where is uncle Rick, when is Camila coming back, aren't they both coming back when the baby comes??? Yeah, that's what we all want to know. Justo dashes everyone's hopes, Ric is far, far away and no he is never coming back. Inez finally helps quiet the child's quest for truth and Santiago is left looking pensive.
After that happy meal, Santiago comes back to the palace to face a weepy Ursula who is sure his family is so grief stricken about losing Rita and she knows everyone still blames her. Santi says no she's imagining things. But her mother won't speak to her. Santi grandly states that this was an instrument of God, we are all in his hands. She actually looks a bit relieved.
Back at Boufy's house, La Font is answering Lis's query about a date set for the dinner, Next week? Does that mean that Sofia is forgiving me and that she will now accept me? He sloughs it off and wants to talk about going to bed to pleasure him, like now. And he wants her to stop acting like a dead body in bed, to enjoy herself in pleasuring him {Ed. Oh please don't make me write more of this again this hour]. She doesn't want to feel like a whore, like acting like he was a pleasure is something only a whore could do well?? He leaves the room telling her to remember she is his wife and has to do what he says and she is to change her style by tonight. Ick!
La Font next walks into his daughter Manuela's room to cheer her life with the news that next week will be an important dinner with the Mancera's and she is to wear her very finest and the pearl choker he chucks on the bed near her. Now the other shoe drops as he mentions that Santi is a widower who needs a new wife and he means this to be her. Manuela looks shocked as he says yes, I want to be related by marriage (emparentar) to the Manceras, Visions of dynasties dancing in his head he slams the door behind him leaving Manuela to sink to her knees in prayer as she wails at her nanny that she now has to marry Santi.
Spotlight moment back to Ric and Mario who still argue whether Ric will stay in bed to heal or they will go to San Fernando tomorrow... Ric always gets the last word.
Back to the palace, Master Fukuda tells Santi that his work is done. Santi's limp is almost cured and that organisms must heal themselves at some point, he has done all he can. Santi is actually pleased about something, he has little pain and not much limp. Fukuda leaves with sayonaras and its been an honor and a pleasure to help Santi. After he leaves Santi tells Jorge he knows this treatment cost a fortune and feels sorry, Jorge dismisses the sacrifice, he wants to give things to his son. In fact Santi has been so helpful working on projects the books, etc. that Jorge says it is time to give him a monthly stipend (mesera) to cover all his expenses to maintain his mother, Justo, and all and Santi has earned it by his constant work. Here sign here, (what did Santi sign without reading first? Readers and recappers want to know.)
Then with a sideways look, Jorge adds that he is sorry Santi lost his wife (apparently doesn't even remember Rita's name after 3 months) however Santi needs a new life, er wife sooner or later and you need a male heir. Jorge has warmed up to Santi a lot and tells him he is glad he has come to live there. He believes Santi is an honorable Mancera. Santi answers, I'm grateful, sir.
The ship sail through the exotic pirate music and a cranky Ric is suffering the doctor to poke at him while he observes that the sword wound is a bit inflamed again. Mario hands a flask to the doctor after he takes a swig, the doc takes a second swig and the rest gets poured on Ric's wound. He starts to yell then warns Mario not to say anything.
The state dinner is underway with the La Fonts and the Manceras all in their finest trying not to act like the savages they all are under the silks. Santi is opining with his new lordly manners that the tax money they have brought in isn't being used to help the less fortunate and there are no building of roads, hospitals, schools, or improvements for the village. What are you proposing poses Jorge. La Font jumps to Santi's side and thinks his ideas are good, already practicing being a father-in-law. Someone switches subjects, I think Fortunada plays the Paco role and innocently asks how Camila is doing. Even Sofia joins in that she has suffered so much. Fran plays the ugly coin and opines that Camila always had the sole of a whore (furcia). Sanit rises from his seat at this one and demands she stop. Lis acts disappointed that it doesn't turn into a Camila roast (with real logs and flames). Manuela gets the last word in that Camila should only be judged by God. Santi is mollified, but barely.
Back in Lis' room, Lis fusses that now Sofia hates her and Fran acknowledges that calling Camila a whore isn't going to be acceptable at casa Mancera ever again.
La Font again orders Manuela to visit Ursula or whomever but get herself over to the Mancera house every day and to make sure she gets close to Santi as often as she can.
Justo lies to Camila again when she asks if there hasn't been a letter or anything from Ric. Justo lies that Ric has tricked her and isn't coming back and she should just resign herself to this reality. She screams that she will not resign herself to not seeing him again. Shortly after Santi opines that Ric is headed for the gallows. Ric is called a delinquent and an assassin. Justo who usually looks like Burt Lahr as the cowardly Lion these days feels bad that Camila is being treated as a prisoner. Having shifted roles day by day, now Santiago puffs his chest and says she will be fine when she has the baby and comes back ... to be controlled by him?
The baby is on La Font's mind too, but he has dastardly plans. We find out from the spy-midwife that Camila is seven month pregnant. We also find out that La Font is willing to pay a lot of money to make that Camila come through the birthing process DEAD on arrival. [Ed note, Thanks astute readers for showing me the error] The spymiddy smirks that first time mothers (primerizas) have a lot of trouble so it won't be hard to fake. La Font reminds her that failure to do it will result in her death! but lots of money will be her reward when it is all done. It will be as you wish she says as she clutches the first payment.
Back at Lis' cloak and dagger room, she first wants to know what La Font is doing with the midwife but is making counter espionage plans with Clothilde to steal the child. She explains that his child is her cousins and therefore is important to her, he/she carries her blood. (make that cold blood) and therefore, she deserves to have it. Clothilde licks her lips at all the money she is going to make and assures her that it can be done. Shortly after Fran freaks at Lis' audacious plan. Lis wants to know what she is afraid of and Fran says let me count the ways: your husband for one (scary dude honey), then if Ric comes back from the dead he will be full of devils and will kill them. Lis says I would do this myself but you might have noticed, I am blind, Fran you have to go to get this baby for me. Lis' plan is simple that she can seduce La Font by being really pleasing so she will have him eating out of her hand soon.
Mario tries to get Ric to stop at an inn a half day away from SanFran but Rick wants to push on no matter how bad his pain. The horses and a carriage stop outside the village. Ric is inside the carriage looking pained but sends Mario and Pablo on ahead on horseback to scope out the house and open it up. Mario lithely hops the wall and uses a key to open the door.
On the other side of a different door a knocking reveals Lis in a drop dead gorgeous beaded dressing gown (no chenille or curlers here) She slides in to an astonished La Font smiles and knowing her man, has him stammering and offering her a glass of wine she kisses him and very furcia like she looks like she is really turned on by him. His idea of foreplay is to poke her with her own cane and tug at her robe tie saying get naked (desnudar) get really naked I want to see every part of your body. She smiles and complies until she is left wearing only her ornate pearl necklace.
Back to casa Ric, the carriage arrives. Ric is helped in the horses and carriage are ordered to be hidden in the stable, the luggage taken inside and everyone else is to hide. The doctor orders boiled water and starts treatment while Mario gives a half hearted but futile argument that Ric can't even lift a sword but Ric is grim and determined.
Fran and Clothilde order the driver of the coach to head to Garbancilla early the next morning, guess we know that Lis won that argument. Shortly later Ric appears in his favorite old monk robes like old times. He and Pablo leave but Ric tells Mario to get the other men and get out of the house since if he is discovered, the guards will surely come immediately to his old house ot look for more pirates. Pablo and Ric walk right past Vasco in his wagon and later some curious looking guards but then Ric is doing his grim reaper look with the hood pulled way forward. Rick leaves Pablo to scope out the town and walks into Justo's garden. Justo jumps when he realizes it is Ric. He stays hard hearted and surly telling Ric that Camla realized the error of her ways and that he was manipulating her so she fled to a convent, oh yeah in the capital. Ric vows that he loves Cami, his daughter more than anything else. She doesn't want to know anything about you. Ric doesn't believe him but Justo plays his trump card of threatening to call the guards. Ric disappears but gets to the center and finds out from Pablo that Jemena is working at the inn/restaurant but Pablo hasnt' spoken to her. Ric approaches her and when she realizes who is under the hood, he warns her not to scream but to get to the church so they can talk. He gets to the church first and prays that he knows that he is a sinner but asks for God's pity. You know my soul. Let me see her and talk to her.
Out in Garbancilla, a very pregnant Camila tries to walk casually by the guard saying she just want to go to mass. He says she can't and he won't even take her. She has to wait for Santi or Justo, he isn't authorized to let her leave for any reason. She tries getting pst him but he restrains her and pushes, she falls clutching her belly in pain. The guard screams that he didnt' mean to hurt her as the maid comes in the room to help the writhing Camila. Oops, looks like labor may have stiarted as we end for this week of huge events.
Next Monday: Santi has really assumed his Lordly duties and with relish is ordering the guards hunt down the pirates like mad dogs...

Camila's family is officially a bunch of losers...she must be adopted. At least she is nice!

I also understood LaFont to say he wants Camila dead. The shady midwife says she can arrange it as first time mothers often have trouble. After he went to the bother of killing Rita, he doesn't want to lose Santi to Camila. This man is made of evil. Though, I must say if I were giving out awards, the actor playing him would be my choice for Best Supporting Actor. He's done a great job of bringing this dastardly character to life.
These novelas always have a happy ending-right? I'm hoping so, but we're running out of time...

Santi has become what he said he hated in Jorge, except worse. He is cloaking his treachery behind his superficial religiosity and wounded dignity act. At least with Jorge you knew you were dealing with a lecherous cheat.
He still can't marry Cami though as he plans at this point. Even if the annulment is granted the Catholic Church has laws against taking a person prisoner and then marrying them. The person has to be allowed to be free for a period of time and must return to their captor of their own free will. Further, if he goes along with Justo's lie that Ric is never coming back or tries to bring about the death of Ric or the separation of Ric and Cami for his benefit, he can't legally marry her in the Church.
Guess who took a course on Canon Law in college? It's fascinating stuff, but scary to think that their actually has to be a law that says you can't kill someone just to marry their spouse, promised, beloved, etc...It's interesting that almost all the laws are written to protect the woman.

Wish you were watching Juan with our very small group! Cheryl recaps on that team also.
I have noticed Justo's "twitch". I was trying to figure out what was going on. TIA's sound good. At least that will give him an excuse for his really bad behavior when he has to account for himself in the light of time.
So, I'm not the only one who didn't know what Santi signed. I thought I must have missed some dialog. Probably something else that will come back to haunt him, I hope.
Now, to the expert in canon law. How lucky can we be to know all that. But, don't you think that sanctimonious Santi would think of some "reasonable" explanation for avoiding its application. In his mind, he's not imprisoning Cami. He's helping her. What a jerk!

It made me happy to know that LaPaisana got her chance to appeal to Pablo. Sounds like things may work out for a mother/child reunion.
I'm worried about Ric's recovery, since three more months have gone by. Yeah, two mortal wounds, but surely by now he could be doing some improvised physical therapy, etc. and building up his strength?
It might be as well if Justo has a stroke and dies from it. If not, I may jump into the tv and strangle him. I agree that Santi has become an insufferable know-it-all.
Give credit to Lis for being resourceful and willing to learn new skills. Whatever it takes...
It's ok I didn't see that seduction. It turned my stomach just to read about it. Also agree that the actor playing LaFont is doing a great job.
La Paloma
Wow Cami's already 7 months pregnant?
Santo is really annoying. I despise people who use religion in order to manipulate or hurt other people. The worst part is that he actually believes that he is a saint and that he is obliged to save the sinners. The plot with Santo is/was really unpredictable though. I always thought that he was going to understand Cami and Rico and that he would be given the "reign" of SF only at the very end of the telenovela in order to halp them. I never thought that he would become such a j... Of course you never know.
I hate Lis, but I got a little thrill going on when she decided use her womanly wiles against LaFont. It was fun watching her manipulate him. I'm still rooting for the blind chick to do him in, but if he gets carved up by a pirate I won't complain.
Thanks Cheryl and the rest of the Pasion recappers for all your hard work. I can't believe this is almost over. Didn't we just start?
Yeah, that scene with Lis in ramera mode was slimey, but for some reason it cracked me up. Lis has some unique facial expressions of her own.

I can't wait to see Ric and Jimena's talk!!
Ursula, after finding out that Al killed Rita and Ursula got blamed;
Jorge, discovering that Al went behind his back one too many times;
Mannie's Nannie: This would never happen, but I'd like to see it, as it would be humiliating for Al;
The law: Unlikely, but maybe Al could be convicted of murder and hanged.
jb-Iron Jack Cash
I am under the impression that Ric will kill LaFont. LaFont is one of the two most evil characters in this telenovela along with Liz IMO. I strongly believe that these two should die. The leader character has to kill at least one of them (maybe during a fight?)because he's the hero. But I seriously doubt that they would have Ric killed his beloved (for so many years)cousin. So, he has to kill LaFont. To be honest, I would like Santo to kill him after having found out that he was the one that killed Rita (if he finds out). But that wouldn't make much sense, huh?
As for the families being surprisingly small, I think that has more to do with death than birth control, which I understand was limited at that time. I can't imagine Sophia used birth control when she was so keen to have an heir for Jorge in Santi. I'm guessing she just couldn't have anymore children after Ursula. As for Al, Justo, and Ofelia, I'd guess their spouses all died young. I remember Cami saying she didn't really remember Ofelia's husband but I don't remember whether anyone said anything about her mother. I can certainly imagine Al's wife not lasting long!
Cami Supporter
I don't know if even a whore could take pleasure in Bouffy's bed. That'd have to be some serious money. And maybe a blindfold.
Hm. Ascanio's already told Mannie that unSaintly might be able/willing to give them an earthly hand of God. Maybe she should get close to him - so she can clue him in to what the Bouf is plotting and start pleading for that help.
His idea of foreplay is to poke her with her own cane Well, lord knows there are worse things to be poked with. You know, like - (the remainder of this comment had been censored for sanity's sake).
I like the idea of Ric as the Reaper. Your time is a-comin', boys (and bad girls)! But he should have skipped the pop-in at Justo's and gone straight to Jimena.
The mortality rate for births prior to modern times was absolutely awful, from what I understand. That's what ran a lot of the women down, too - hence the midwife's assurance of an unsuspicious death for Camila. As far as birth control goes, in the eighteenth century, you'd pretty much be looking at various abortifacients (either herbal or straight-up poison) and maybe the withdrawal method. I know condoms had been invented by then, but hadn't necessarily caught on the way they have now. Pessaries date back to ancient Egypt, but I don't know if they were in use during 'our' era.
It was rough to live back then if you were a woman. Either you had many children who ended up dying of illnesses, or you died in childbirth. Definitely survival of the fittest! (no epidurals, either!)
Justo, and Saintly are acting like such jerks and in the previews it looks like inJusto told Saintly about Ric and that's why the soldiers are being called. Arrrr!
Which is true, we're all telenovela fans here, and we love to comment on the shows and sometimes speculate on what will happen.
Quick note on LP's confession to Pablo: I don't think the rich woman was LP's employer, but dad's new wife. He used his new money and the fact that LP worked in a brothel (probably as exactly what we think she was working as) to take away the kids. She managed to track him down and begged him to give her the children back, but had no success. She always had them in her mind and in her heart though. I think they'll eventually make up. Maybe Pablo can hook up with Magdalena and the three of them can be a happy family ;)
It's funny about the RC church not wanting people to marry the siblings of dead spouses. In the old testament (and in many other traditions) it was actually expected, especially if there were no children, to insure an heir would be produced, and in the case of widows, to insure they and their children were cared for. As for Cami's marriage to Ric, it wasn't technically valid since Ric used his fake name, so Santi could probably get himself permission. As for Cami not wanting to marry Santi' I don't think the church would allow a forced marriage if the bride said "I don't."
I hadn't thought of how small the families were in this novela. I think there was some mention of Sofia being unable to carry to term at a certain point. One of the reasons parents had so many children in those days was that infant mortality was so high. That and they usually needed the free labor. It wasn't uncommon for only half or less than half of your children to make it to adulthood. Dunno what Ursula used though. She might have used withdrawal, but I don't know if she would have trusted the men she slept with to be in charge of the birth control. She might also have used the rhythm method. Although it's playing Russian roulette for most women, for someone with Ursu's history (mom only carrying one kid to term) it might have been plenty and she probably miscarried a few times at such an early time she never even knew she was pregnant.
Re telenovela traditions: Dunno if the baby will be a boy or a girl (in most period pieces it tends to be a boy, but I've seen a few girls as well). Al has to die, as a villain of this magnitude usually does, but there is no guarantee it will be the horrible painful death we hope for. Justo is a fifty/fifty as parents are often forgiven their injustices unless they actually kill people. I strongly suspect Santi will die. The fact that he still carries the torch this far into the plot and has a position of power leads me to think that he has to die either protecting Cami or interceding for Ric. The fact that he has Ascanio working on the book makes me suspect this scenario: Ascanio discovers proof of Al and Jorge's evildoings. He tells Santi all of this, along with the fact that this is what Ric was looking for to retire from piracy (and that the money that was stolen was in fact stolen by Santi's dad). Santi will realize that the folks that he's hanging with are worse than Ric and will get the info to Ric. Al will kill him for this which will make Jorge strike a deal with the crown telling them it was all Al's fault and agreeing to give up his title in exchange for not getting executed. Ric will become the new SSF through his padrino's influence. Just a guess. Liz and Fran will probably also live, but they will be alone and forgotten and lonely as nobody in town will say hello to them and Clotilde will remain their only lifeline to the outside world. Ursu will either run off to meet Foreman (villains who are only loose usually don't get too severely punished, and in Ursu's twisted mind her setup of Mani and Ascanio was actually a "good" deed) or seeing herself without a fortune will go ahead and take Uriel back. If Ric is the new SSF, he will be able to grant Claudio a pardon for killing his primo/stepdad so he can return to Salvatierra. As for the baby, there is the remote posibility Cami will die (heroines, even those whose name is the title, have been known to die) but I suspect she will somehow survive through the interference of Juliana or a a sudden appearance of Ofi. The baby will probably get taken for a little while, but will eventually be rescued. These are my guesses, maybe half will actually be somewhere near right ;)
Take care,
M
The birth control methods discussion this morning is interesting. It seems like the logistics of so many extra cast members and the need to focus on fewer key people may drive the plot more than the realistic representation of larger families.
I'm a bit baffled as to how Lis thinks she can possibly claim this baby. It's not as if she can pass it off as her own.
I also don't get why she didn't simply pitch the idea to Lafont before scheming with Clothilde. He's in a much better position to make it happen; anyway, she's going to have to explain it to him once the baby shows up, unless she's actually planning on getting rid of Lafont sooner than that.
Also he will be hard-pressed to claim custody of the baby if Cami is alive. (We know Lafont plans to get rid of Cami, but does Lis know that?)
It is quite helpful that there are so many of us on this so we can each catch what the other missed. This novela in particular has so much scheming, and so much dialogue, that it's easy to miss stuff. OTOH, Guapos is so full of colloquialisms, we miss stuff constantly!
Julie, Lis is actually planning to run away, so maybe she plans to have Clotilde hide the baby somewhere until they've figured out how to leave. Wonder if Fran will put the breaks on this one too. It is also possible that she's crazy enough to think Al will accept the baby once it's already there if she keeps him horny and liquored up (mentally shuddering on that one). She didn't go to Al because she figured Al wouldn't want to give her the baby. She's right on that one, I can't imagine him agreeing to have someone else's child in his house (except maybe as insurance in case Ric shows up).
Can't wait to see what plans Ric and Jim cook up tomorrow!

Margarita, those are some insightful predictions and I will bet you're right about a lot of them! You had some ideas I hadn't thought of, and I won't be surprised if they turn out to be correct!
I think Justo's realization that they are perhaps being cruel to Cami means he will survive. As for Santi, forgeddaboutit! He's so far 'round the bend at this point, I am sure he's doomed. However, I do think he'll die a noble death, protecting Cami or Ric.
I think Lis will descend into complete madness and will end up a permanent invalid, with Tia having to care for her day in and day out. A living purgatory for both of them.
Susanna J.
gRita KNOWS that Camila loves another man! She may be blocking her sister from having what would make her happy (Ri-car-do) AND saddling her with her baby too! It wouldn't be the first time in this telenovela that a deathbed request is meant to keep the hatred going into the future. For instance Tio Tim and Ric's mom.
1) Carla: I implore you to limit the Bouf/Lis love scenes. I know this isn't real but it's still disturbing.
2) Missed Rita's death but her confession about the missing letter does bring up interesting comparisons to InJusto's actions. I hope it opens Saintly's eyes to his hypocrisy.
3) The opening credits reveal quite a bit, in hindsight.
4) "Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive." How many characters should have this tattooed on their bodies???
Thanks to all recappers!! I missed a lot over the last week & now that we're heading into the Gran Finale, I'm looking forward to a lot of resolutions!!! And yes, they all must be happy so I can get the image of Bouf the S&M Master out of my mind.
:-)
Of course these two of a different era would not find humor or inhumanity in their behavior. I'm remembering when Camilla brought up the fact that when Jorge snatched her from her engagement party to deflower her that he (Papa) didn't consider that a blemish on her honor. inJusto said, well a woman's lot has always been difficult.
I thought that was what she was saying.
But HOW DOES SHE LOGICALLY expect to get away from the Abuser, be tracked by Ricardo, and live happily ever after?!
"Another air-brained idea you've come up with (missing 2 stooges)!"
Lis needs to KILL the BEAST first. Two knives, one under each pillow.
LIS COULD GET THIS ONE RIGHT! :-()
The problem is that it'd be harder for her to be sure whether he's awake or not. She can't even see if his eyes are open. Saying "are you awake" in the middle of the night might make him suspicious and then maybe he wouldn't answer.
If he sees that pillow coming, she'll be dead before she even suspects something's wrong. The poison really is a better idea.
If she still thinks she's going to kill him with sex she's crazy. It's been a few months now (all of sudden Cami's in her, what, sixth or seventh month??) and it's clear that he's in no danger. Lis, on the other hand, could be pregnant or something. Or for all we know she might even start liking him. Ew!
Great recap Cheryl, I see Fridays are in good hands.
On Thursday - I was a bit disappointed like all of you that Rita was made sympathetic at the last moment. I also couldn't believe that Justo sat there thinking Rita was so wrong for hiding that card when he just did the exact same thing with the message and visit from Ricardo. What a huge hypocrite. And then deciding with Santiago over dinner to marry Camila off to him? Gah. Well, I don't see it happening. Camila seems to have stayed strong with her belief that Ric will return.
How is Mario restraining himself from running to Jimena? He has way more willpower than the esteemed Captain Ric.
I can't actually see Lis killing somebody directly, even her loathsome husband. Before they killed off Gonzalo, I thought he'd be the one to bring down the LaFont-Jorge corrupt house of cards. Now because of their deteriorating friendship, I think it will be a death match between LaFont and Jorge. I've softened towards Jorge recently, so I hope he off's LaFont rather than vice versa.
Poison? Well we have seen that he likes to share his wine with her, grabbing her chin and pouring it every place. Too chancee.
I think Santiago's going to live (we do see him at the end of the opening credits), but he'll come to some kind of sanity (maybe it's that green scarf - it's rotting and infecting him, giving him fever dreams).
I think Camila's had enough of her menfolk running her life - she's been the good girl for so long, they're used to her sacrificing herself to do the "right" thing. They're in for a surprise!
And with the discussion by (I forget who) about canon law - weren't there usually ways around such things? For example, if a woman were being forced into a marriage, her family could lock her in her room until she agreed to do what they wanted; or threaten her with being sent to a convent as a servant, or being disowned (with no dowry, her chances of any kind of a life would be pretty slim). And, in Camila's case, they could make the excuse that her father sent her away to protect her, that Santiago wasn't responsible for imprisoning her.
But still - wouldn't there have been a problem with Santiago marrying his dead wife's sister? I know that this was regarded as a no-no (Henry VIII ran into this problem when he wanted to marry Catherine of Aragon, who'd been married to his dead brother; they had to get a dispensation, she contended that the marriage hadn't been consumated, etc. ... not that THAT would be a good way to a happy ending).
And Ricardo has to live and get back to Camila - all this suffering! don't they usually make our hero and heroine suffer agonizingly before they can live happily ever after?

One factor that told Ri-car-do that inJusto was lying was because Ric knows Camila wouldn't leave town to save her own life. So why would she leave town to forget him? Stupidly weak inJusto. Thank you.
I'm enjoying Jimena's facial -and body- reactions to conversations. As when Paco was asking those delving questions, Jimena was leaning in with that smirk that says uh-huh now get out of this. She does these pragmatic silent commentaries that crack me up.
And her almost squeal that showed on her face but never left her mouth when she saw Ricardo. She's so good!
Being a viewer with dictionary in hand, I depend so much on the generosity of your time and knowledge. Thank you.
In regards to the letter writing and so many times Ricardo is shown writing in his journal. This is also I believe, Estrada and her crew's allegiance to historical accuracy. Although I have not had much interest in reading them, I'm aware of the genre of sea captains' diaries and journals self-published or family publications.
Now that I have seen the possibilities of what may be contained in a sea captains writings, I just might not be so squirmish (I suffer from motion sickness) when I run across this stuff on the library bookshelves.
Maybe thats how Ri-car-do will make another fortune? He'll publish his diaries as a sea captain!
:-)
Nobody, male or female, is supposed to marry their dead spouses siblings according to Canon Law, but money and power combined with corrupt or ignorant Church officials resulted in all sorts of permutations.
As for the kidnapping or locking someone away until they gave in to their families wishes happened, but if they filed for divorce later, which given the societal views probably didn't happen, the Church would declare the marriage invalid, because one of the parties was not truly free to consent to the marriage. If the kidnapping/forced marriage situation was known to the priest who is supposed to marry couple he cannot do it, but I'm sure it happened when the right amount of pressure and money was applied.
Someone who was notorious or public in their "concubinage" (i.e. probably Vasco) shouldn't have been married in the Church either. If Ines chose to divorce him the statement he made about not intending to stay faithful to the marriage could be grounds for annulment as well.
As for Santi, he is a perfect model of the human mind's ability to deceive itself. He will bend the letter of the law and ignore the spirit of the law. He really does think he's better than everyone else because he ignores his own sins: he married a woman he didn't really love; proposed her sister become his mistress and hates a man for being loved be the woman he (Santi) loves. Santi can now justifiy his hatred of Ric because Ric's a pirate, but he would hate Ric if he were a shoemaker, just because Cami loves Ric. He preaches forgiveness, but can't forgive. He feels his own woundness while ignoring how he wounds others.
People like him to more harm to religion than the most strident atheist.

What specifically has you angry about his behavior? Could it be that he didn't DRrrrag her out of that boontown away from the so called loving family?
Me to somewhat BUT that would have been a VERUY short telenovela.
I'm just wondering now how it is he decided to begin the process of forgiving his bio-dad. Because he sure is stubborn about forgiving fate from robbing him of what he wanted.
Fernando Colunga, TBLMOE, is hard evidence that God really did create one man in His image. All the rest evolved.

P.S. to my complaint about Ric - to me it's fine if you want to endanger your own life for the sake of love, but endangering the other guys (especially precious Mario) is a whole nother thing.
Anon 3:31 - I think you were referring to Ric's crew, rather than the us crazy bloggers, when asking why nobody was mad at Ric. Technically, Mario has been mad and was more than willing to tell him so. Nevertheless, part of the pirate code meant that you had to obey your captain blindly. As Foreman once put it "It doesn't matter if he tells you to protect the nuns or to kill them, you do what he says." There was always the option of challenging the captain to a duel and taking over the job, but a) Ric's a heck of a fighter (though maybe not at this second) and b) as Mario and LP have pointed out, they all love him. He's been a good captain and takes care of the widows and orphans if his people die, so they feel indebted to him. They may complain to Mario (who will then complain to Ric), but in the end, they will do what he tells them.
I guess what started this was when Ric was in his sick bed ordering Pablo (in front of his madre no less) to go on this dangerous mission and it was purely for selfish purposes which made him kind of less than a hero to me. I promise no more Ric bashing - he's just lucky he's so cute.

He's been quite honest with his crew; he hasn't been abusive, nor has he forbidden anyone from quitting who doesn't want to stick around. And it seems that they're taken care of financially, even during downtime. That's not such a bad deal.
That's not to say that he's perfect, but compared to some of the other people in this story, Ric's offenses are so far down on the list that I don't have any anger left to spare for him. If he betrays someone who trusts him, then maybe I'll be able to work up some outrage.
"Eddie" Lafont & his ideas of foreplay. As much as you'd normally
feel sorry for someone in Lis' position, her & "Tia Fran" deserve to be screwed over bigtime! P.
