Fuego, Wed., July 2: Age-gap relationships, questionable policing techniques, and a whole lot of battered pregnant women!
We start tonight with a Gabi-Fernie love scene. Oh boy! Fernie needs help taking his shirt off, and Gabi is just the girl to do it! She tells him the usual: she doesn’t know what she would do without him; he is such a great guy, etc. Fernie tells Gabi that she is just the woman for him, the type of woman he should have by his side. He draws Gabi in with that look of his and his strong arms. At first she resists the physical contact to which she has been resistant for many years. However, Fernie seduces her so much that she becomes a raging sexual tigress to the point that Fernie is her air and she struggles to breathe without him. At one point she takes the kissing/biting thing too far and exposes Fernie’s mic., but not to worry because she carefully pulls his shirt over it again.
As the Reyes bros. are incarcerated, they receive news that Sofia is fine and stable. This news makes Juan happy. This happiness has affected Juan so much that he admits that he likes Rosendo. Now they are friends, and this new amiguito is going to make sure Sofia is well. ¡Qué bien!
In the night club/casino some men are gambling, drunk, and laugh at the fact that they falsely accused the Reyes of murdering Pedra, and that it was Fernie who was actually responsible.
Gabi and Fernie remain lip-locked until Gabi’s moral side kicks in. She rips her lips away from Fernie as fast as you can say lecherer. “It’s not right. You’re my daughter’s husband.” “But she doesn’t love me, and you’re the one that I should be with.” Fernie wraps Gabi in his arms and holds on tight to her girlfriends; she orgasmically gasps for breath. She is in a state of bliss, but at the same time the acting is so poor that you really can’t tell what she is feeling. She runs out as Fernie laughs to himself.
Padre Tadeo is trying to convince Gramps to keep quite about Fernie, and “keep an enemy close.”
We then see the bartenders talking. They always knew that the Reyes were good boys, and that they were framed by Mapache. They tell Rosario, who tells them to alert the authorities immediately. She calls them cowards for letting a criminal, Fernie, get away.
Sofia is telling Jimena that Juan has to know what is going on, but at the same time Fernie can’t find out. Jimena tells her not to worry. In walks Padre. He wants to know what happened.
Juan is anxious because he knows that Sofia needs him desperately. This whole jail time has given him a lot of time to think things through, and he has come to the conclusion that the bros. must stick together. You think this is something, wait till he gets 8-10 in the state pen. and see what insightful things he thinks up then. Anyway, the warden dude approaches them and says that there isn’t enough evidence to support their claim, so they are being moved to the state pen. – just as I assumed. Juan tells the guy, prolifically if I may add, that they are innocent! He’s not going to sit back and watch; he’s going to do something about it! I can’t wait to see what it is… Oscar asks Jimena if she believes in his innocence, and she says ‘yes.’
The Padre assures Sofia that her child will be fine because Sofia has always been a good girl. Sofia isn’t so sure because she and her mother are always fighting. Regardless, the Padre tells her that Juan is a good man and the two of them deserve to be together.
Gabi is hiding in the office with her friend Brandy. She tells Fernie that no one should know what happened. Fernie, who is a gentleman, will not breathe a word. But there’s no denying that the two of them didn’t like it. Bang! Gramps kicks the doors open and demands to know what Fernie did to Sofia in the stables. Gabi tells Gramps to leave him alone, and as always Fernie doesn’t have a clue as to what is going on. Gramps tells Fernie to leave the ranch immediately because no one wants or needs him. Gabi instantly chimes in that he is an integral part of the family. Fernie tells Gabi that she needs to realize that they both need each other a lot.
The bartenders are still questioning if they should tell anyone about what they know. Rosario tells her dresser woman that Fernie is now a suspect in this case and that she is sure of the Reyes’ innocence.
Jimena tells Juan that Sofia is okay and that she loves Juan. Juan tells Jimena to tell Sofia that he loves Sofia. Oscar isn’t sure if he’ll ever see Jimena again, but asks her to never forget their relationship. He will never forget her. The two share a terribly romantic kiss through the plastic that was painted to look like steel bars. Jimena leaves and the warden enters. Movin’ time. Juan says one of the only lines he knows; “were not goin’ no where, no how-over my dead body (primero muerto)! Doesn’t seem like Juan wants to cooperate…hmmm. Looks like his brothers are going to have to convince Juan to do the right thing. Not like it will be hard; he’ll have a mood swing in 30 secs., and suddenly see everything in a different light. Anyway, he hugs and kisses his brothers as if they will never see each other again. My question is how they will split the one brain that all three shared. Juan looks at his shaking hand, holds it close to his heart, and looks to the heavens saying “my little boys, my little boys.” What a loving father, I mean brother.
Sarita, the other bitch of the Elizondo family, wants to know why Jimena is crying. How dare she show emotion in her own bedroom! Jimena tells her that the boys have been moved to the pen. Sarita doesn’t care because those boys are traitors, users, and boozers. And besides, everything is that damn Rosario’s fault-the damn daughter of Eva. In walks Eva. Nice Sarita.
As the team of highly specialized prison guards moves the detainees to the moving vehicle the bartenders/defenders of justice hold them up. “Wait!” they say.
Then we see Mapache with his shirt off. Hold on, let me throw up. Ok better. He tells the little whore-chick that he has a lot of money to pay her.
Sarita is now trying to explain herself to Eva. She explains that she is mad that Eva was never up-front with them. Eva, who is in tears, tells them that she never knew where her daughter was. Sarita doesn’t care at first, but then she starts to cry because Eva tells them that she loves them. Eva says that she has to leave them to be with her daughter, but she will always love them. Sarita eventually softens up and accepts Eva’s affection. What a scene.
Gramps’ little helper Panchito returns to his cardboard hut to find his Granny, and tell her that he rounded up some grub. Granny is acting like a drunken maniac and falls to the floor. The effects of narcotics…
Mapache wakes up in his bed to find the “police,” who are holding a gun to his head. In the US there would be so much wrong with this scene, but we know how reality intertwines with this TN-not at all!
So Quintina has her sister blind-folded. She wants to surprise Hortencia with a new truck. Hortencia, who is a proud woman, wants to know how Quintana got this car. She explains that it is from Gramps. Hortencia goes wild with excitement.
The Reyes go wild too because they escaped prison without escaping from prison. And more importantly Juan didn’t have to live up to his promised scheme. The warden tells Juan that the Reyes are completely free to go, and on top of it all Padre Tadeo paid their fees. As Mapache walks in Juan punches him a good one. Again, this would be somehow punishable by law in any sort of civilized world.
During dance practice at the Hooters, Fernie’s cronies receive word that Mapache has been locked up.
As the authorities throw Mapache into his cell, he tells his cell mate that the man who contracted him will get him out. We knew that…
Juan is riding his horse home when he comes across Panchito. Juan is going to help out with Granny.
Fernie walks into the ranch to meet Gramps, who tells him to get out of town because no one wants him. Fernie makes a move to hit Gramps. Gramps is not afraid and tells him to demonstrate his cowardice. Lucky for Gramps, in walks Fernie’s right-hand man. Gramps still has his fists ready, but then puts them down with a look of self pity and defeat.
Fernie is upset that his “friend” came to visit him in his home. When Fernie finds out that Mapache is in jail he realizes that if Mapache talks, they all go down. Therefore he wants to eliminate him as soon as possible.
As the warden is questioning Mapache, which by the way probably wouldn’t be in his job description, Mapache admits that he killed Pedra.
Juan has taken Granny to the town clinic where she is being examined by a doctor, who probably just printed his diploma offline 20 mins. ago. The doctor Montez is new in town and will be helping the other “doctor” from now on. Juan assures Panchito that Granny is going to be a-okay because this doctor is of confidence. Well, if he’s anything like Gabi’s doctor I guess he is!
As Sofia is in bed, Gabi comes to visit her. “If you think I’m going to console you, you are wrong.” Wow, what a bitchy thing to say to your daughter. Nothing like kickin’ ‘em while they’re down! After everything that has happened, Gabi hopes that God has heard her prayers and doesn’t let that bastard be born. Gabi tells Sofia that she doesn’t deserve to be the daughter of Gabriela Elizondo. You know why? Because when Sofia was born, Gabi’s husband only had eyes for Sofia. You see, Sofia robbed Gabi’s husband. Gabi says that Bernie deserved that death, just as Sofia deserves a stillborn. Then Gabi proceeds to lock arms with Sofia and demands to know who the father is. Sofia doesn’t tell, so Gabi slaps her pregnant, sick daughter to the point that Sofia almost falls off of the bed. Bitch no. 2, that is, Sarita, sees this and kindly asks Gabi not to do that, please. Gabi stares at Sofia like a raccoon in the headlights. Interesting… “Tell me who the father of that bastard is!” roars Gabi. After the girls ask Gabi not to talk to Sofia like that, Gabi feigns her own little sickness. Gabi then tells Sofia that she will lock her away where she will never see that illegitimate father. The altercation then moves to the balcony where Gabi has again locked arms with Sofia and shakes her, demanding to know the father’s name. Gramps sees this and tells Gabi to stop. Eva tells Gabi to stop hitting the pregnant woman, who is also Gabi’s daughter. Gabi doesn’t listen and slaps Sofia again. Gabi then turns to Eva and tries to throw a punch, but Eva catches it and tells Gabi not to hit her! Gabi then grabs Sofia and throws her in her room and locks the door. Gabi tells everyone to get out of her sight. “Sofia. Sofia!” In storms Juan on his big ol’ horse. He’s here to collect his wife and his son! Everyone gasps…
This was seriously one of the most awesome scenes yet! I hope that I portrayed it well enough for y’all. It was excellent!
Tomorrow: After one of the most exciting brawls of the year, Juan has come to collect his prize, Sofia. We see he pushes Gabi out of the way and picks up Sofia, the damsel in distress.

I've seen some old haciendas in pictures that look like they were made for just that -- the entire ground floor consisting of cobbles and water troughs.
So there I was at 3 in the morning, laughing, snorting, and blowing chunks/barfing all at the same time during the NoneFer-Crabby Grope and Lick Fest. *huuurrkkkk* And the way he was laughing when Crabby ran out. So hilarious I could barely stand it.
I can understand why a young boy who saw his parents blown away a few feet from him (and was in fact staring into his mama's eyes when she caught her bullet) would grow up to be a fist-throwing rager, while his brothers (who saw nothing) did not. Carry on, Mighty Joe Juan. Perhaps that will be your character's big change by the end of the TN--love and justice will help you learn to control the rage.
Mapache with his shirt off! *GACK* Ewwww, that was bad. Cold and clammy fish belly. (My apologies to the actor; we can't all help what deck we're dealt from.)
Our Gramps list is OLD, just that fast! Reposting it with the new additions, y'all.

C'mon, cameramen. Get the right angle when Juan is punching someone so that it LOOKS like his fist connects with its target. You're getting paid for this. Dang.
Hey... was that Pablito's usual doggie? That pooch looked like our beloved Tonki from DUELO!
Someone was talking about loving shoulders. I love shoulders. Just sayin'.
(What an awesome actress. :)
Loved the Juan on his big ol' horse crack....thanks
Now from a totally pragmatic point of view, Gabi and Fer should be together. I mean he's got it, she wants it, she is a cold bitch and he is a psycho, she has money, he is willing to do the deed. Many a young couple have started with less.
Oh yeah yesterday someone asked if pyschic connections are common in TeleNovelas...Weeellll
the further you get from Mexico City in these things, the more crazy crap gets dumped in these. I've seen them with really bad Indian stuff thrown in...thus prompting me to spend forever looking for a foto of our "Franco" as a sturdy handsome young Indian Brave in "Entre Amor y Odio". I have been in Mexican towns where the signs are bi-ligual with Spanish and Indian, but alas I never saw anyone dressed like Pablo.
Great scene at the end with Juan to the rescue! He can sure ride that Capricho! He could give me a lift anytime!
Anon is right, Mapache did kill Petra. What I don't understand is why he admitted it so easily. What a stupid assassin. Gotta say, I love the sheriff's mutton chops, very retro.
Awesome recap Nicolas, thanks!
Re: this novela being so bizarre, campy and, dare we say, turning into a circo? Let us remember that it was written by Lilliana Abud, and it is a Mejia production. Ack.
doris
Biscuit queen-great list/analysist!
Becky-I love your pragmatic stance on the age-gap relationship!
Yes, I am getting sick of Sofia getting hit. Most pregnant women would have defended themselves if only for the baby.Yes, I kept hoping that Gabby would fall off the balcony but no such luck.
Have to admit that last bit was one of the more romantic scenes I've seen in a novela. Me late el corazón.
Favorite Gramps toy...coathanger bow and toilet plunger arrow!
Watching the preview with Juan carrying Sofia away was great! Could it be that Crabbi hates Sofia because SHE is not her real daughter? Just saying......
I thought for sure Eva would go over the balcony.
I think Mapache confessed because he doesn't trust Armando and was willing to sell him (and the whole gang) down the river to save his own skin. That's why Feo and Armando were talking about getting rid of him. They'd better hurry up, though.
Presumably Mapache will want a lawyer to broker the plea agreement, so that'll give Armando & Feo time to do their thing.
I also loved Juan riding into the foyer. It reminded me of that time when the Terminator drove his truck into the convenience store.
It's nice that he wants to rescue Sofia, but before he rides off into the sunset with her, I think he should first take Gabi to the police station.
And I'm glad that Eva has at least enough backbone to block a punch. I was really starting to wonder!
I think Mapache knuckled under to the comisario, because he did indeed intend to implicate Fernando and Armando to help himself. They will have to have him killed and for good reason.
butter biscuit queen, I love your character motivation for Juan, and I'm buying it. :-) And what shoulders that man has, hm?
Shoulders
I admire his neck, too. :-) It makes me want to sink my dragon's fangs into him and carry him back to my lair.
And I agree Bracho is an awesome actress; she and Cantú made that love scene a horror treasure. Beckster, loved your take on many a young couple.
During the last scene with everyone scuffling on the landing -- even though it was not really the appropriate timing (Sofía having just immediately survived a crisis) -- I kept thinking escaleracide (death by staircase).
Don't know if that is a foreshadow, but there was never a set better designed for a long plunge to the death.
That last scene was classic. I like Julie's reference to "Terminator." At least tonight someone will put that evil witch in her place.
It's too bad. A couple of nights in the pokey wouldn't teach Gabi a thing, but it'd make me feel better.
I'm concerned about all the traveling around that Father Tad is having to do on that donkey. He might be working donkey too hard like this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIPVg6FXB1s
I don't like donkey abuse, but actually I think donkey was rather relaxed - like it's happened before...

1. The voice of reason. In Fuego it's Fr Tadeo and Abuelo. In Pasion it was Sofia (governor's wife) and Ofelia (Santi's mom). In Fea it was Mama Julietta and to a lesser degree Irmita. Usually older. Usually like the seer from the Illiad, speaks the truth but no one listens.
2. The fence-sitter. Lost between good and evil. In Pasion it was Santiago. In Fuego it's Sarita. In Fea, probably Marcia or Aldo. Tends to believe in the justice of her cause, but it becomes an obsession to the point that it drives her to evil deeds, i.e. the end justifies the means. Character usually falls deep into nastiness, but toward the end sees the error of his ways and redeems himself.
3. Dirty rotten shnook. Evil through and through. In Passion it was LaFont. In Fuego it's Feonando. In Fea it was Ariel. In Bullwinkle it was Fearless Leader (sorry, couldn't resist). Often we never see the motivation for such venom. Usually meets with a horrible end, often by fire or falling, images of Hell (or pie cart full of scorpions?). Strangely, in Fea not only did Ariel not meet a bad end, but also he often saw the truth that no one else saw - evil but wise.
What other personality types can you add to the list?
I was afraid Sofi would go dangling from the balcony railing from one of Crabby's blows.
But Jeri... what about MY lair? I want to carry Big E #2 and that bod back to MY lair! What we gonna do?? You take Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, I'll take Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays. Sundays we'll flip a coin, K? (said coin cannot be borrowed from Oscar or Franco, who cheat when it comes to such things :)
Yeah, okay, that is good point-- Crabby and NoneFerNando being physically together in their mentally mutual malice. Well put, becks.
Can't wait for Juan riding in for the rescue tonight...
I think Mapache was very wise to spend his ill gotten booty on a prostitute so he would have time to enjoy the fruits of his labor. Imagine if he had done something foolish like invest in Series EE Bonds. He'll become worm castings long before they ever pay dividends.
Okay, enough of you have mentioned shoulders, you have twisted my arm. See an example of what I like. I guess it's really the shoulder blades and associated muscles.
My shoulders story: In high school band, we spent a week every August with practice twice a day, perfecting our field show. The show started with the band in tight formation. So tight, Glen B's back was six inches from my nose. With the opening note, the formation would expand quickly in all directions like the Big Bang, accompanied by a big flash of music. Glen was a well-built senior and he always wore tight white tee shirts. With his back six inches from my nose, on the first note he'd smack his trumpet up to his mouth, and I'd just stand there enjoying the view. Boy, I sure loved band practice!

The Sidekick: I think this one needs no explanation. Good guys and bad guys all have sidekicks.
The Hapless Victim: Person who is constantly threatened or harmed, but does not fight back. Rosario.
Hapless Victim subtype - Own Worst Enemy: Sabotages self if other people are too busy. Eva; Lety Soliz.
The Boob: Friend of protagonist who gives terrible advice and performs unhelpful favors that tend to make things worse. Can't think of one in Fuego, because in this show everyone else is smarter than the protagonists; but in Pasion, Jimena tended to tell too many secrets in her efforts to smooth things over with people. In LFMB, Omar, PM, and Alicia were all boobs.
Here's my take on quite a few novela heroines.
The Innocent - Virginal (until bedded by the hero) and naive to the ways of the world (sometimes to a fault). She thinks the best of everyone even when evidence points otherwise (e.g. Sofia with her mother.) In some TNs, the innocent is not the brightest tool in the shed which can sometimes cause viewers to associate her with the hapless victim (and/or subtypes) Julie describes above.
The Rake - usually he or she is actually the dirty rotten schnook that Paula H describe but this character was blessed with good looks and sometimes a charming personality. S/he uses these traits as weapons to dupe, seduce, manipulate, etc, all the other characters in the novela. Typically Sergio Sendel especially his character in Heridas.
Is is just me or does anybody else think that Rosario is just TOO obvious a choice to be Eva'a kid??
Here is a thought. What if it really SARITA?? I know she is a lot like Crabi, but that could be due to Environment vs. Heredity, right? I think that Crabi keeps telling Sarita that she is the MOST like her to throw us off, but let's face it-she is the youngest, and by that time 'ol Bernie MUST have had a Bellyfull of Crabi....!
I agree that Rosario is to obvious as the daughter. I was thinking it might be Sophia, since Gabby hates her to much. It will be interesting when the story comes out.
Tonight, go Juan!
I dare to disagree on Juan punching Mapeche. Technically, he didn't really connect, just faked it.
But, he doesn't fake it when it came to that dramatic final scene. I can hardly wait until tonight when we see the entire thing. The heroic rescue of Sofia on horseback--be still, my beating heart!
Love Oscar's sweet brown puppydog eyes, and his dimples. He's my hermano of choice among the Reyes.
Another character type I've seen in telenovelas: the faithful family retainer, whether an actual servant or old friend. Another source of wisdom/advice/sometimes comic relief. Hilario's parents (forgot names) in Destilando Amor, the lawyer in Destilando Amor, nanny of LaFont's daughter in Pasion, Quintina and Eva also fill this role in Fuego. Often a person of rural or lower class background.
La Paloma
In the scene where Mapache got busted by the cops, Good of the prostitute to quickly gather up her "money". Heh heh...
I think that those adults don't seem to stand up for themselves because of cultural differences. In their upbringing, they are deferring to and respecting someone of higher authority and age. Though I think that abuelo Don Agustin was rendered powerless because of his disability. It does not hel that even though he is a bit wise, he is also eccentric.
Since I started to talk about Don Agustin, maybe I should make a slight correction in one of his costumes. It should be Roman Legionnaire instead of Hoplite. Greek Hoplite is more appropriate. Unless the two are being combined though I don't recall a long spear... :)
How many episodes is this telenovela? With Juan taking Sofia home and proclaiming her his wife and with his child, It most likely means she won't be returning to the Hacienda ever. a turning point here. Great job everyone. Carry on.
Ibarramedia
The thing with the victim characters is that when they finally grow a backbone, hold onto your hat... their vengeance is mighty!
Nice rock photo, Paula. :)

In LFMB I often noticed Camil adjusting the "cell phone" on his belt. He was actually turning off the gizmo because he's accustomed to acting outside the Televisa system and (I suspect) at times the gizmo was too much of a distraction.
Tontas, coming soon (I hope) won't use the gizmo. I've heard gossip that for some actors it was hard to get used to working without it.
The comment said "Roman hoplite", and I was laughing way too hard for it to register... just wrote it down.
Greek hoplite it is. Thanks for catching that!
Psychologists say that this is usually a father's problem (newborn steals all of mother's attention & love away from father). But I know firsthand that it can go the other way like it is with Crabi. My own mother has perpetrated a version of Crabi on me since I was a small child, for the same reason.
This selfish & self-centered perception can work itself up to a pretty extreme state. And Crabi obviously has been working hers up for years on High Speed!
Yes, how many weeks is this telenovela in total? It's still going in Mexico, and it started in January there. Will it last out the year? How does one find out the span of telenovelas? Is there a website? You guys have more experience with such things...
To acertain when one will end, you need tea leaves. Nothing will give you more reliable information than tea leaves.
Good luck!
