Querida Enemiga Monday June 30 - Son Novios

Vasco’s parents discuss how juvenile he looks now. His greatest crime? Having the nerve to bathe in cold water. The nerve! Vasco overhears but doesn’t seem to be offended. He turns off a light and leaves.

Lorena brings Maruja to meet Alonso’s father for some head shrinking. Lorena looks nice in her outfit, sweater and skirt, instead of a cook’s uniform.

Rosy runs into her galan outside her house, he tracked her down through some detective work. They flirt a little. He wants to walk her to work but she has a ride. Later!

Alonso’s father (I can’t remember his name) is going to tape the session, he says to blackmail her later. Ha ha joke. He seems alive again, having a patient. They are going to try and find the origin of the conflict between she and Rosy.

Vasco’s dad tells him to do what he wants to do, follow his heart, etc etc. He says he works with La Bruja by choice. I don’t believe him.

Rosy tells Lorena how her galan showed up at her house. Sara shows up and wants to talk to Lorena. In the hall, Sara tells about Hortensia seeing them talk and how she lied about telling Lorena ‘the truth.’ Lorena doesn’t like being in on a lie, but Sara sweet talks her. Lorena then tells her how she met a man, Sara says me too! His name is…. Her phone rings and it’s Chalo. She pretends that it’s a business call for Lorena’s benefit. Before they can talk about their respective men, who are the same man obviously, Maruja interrupts and says Hortensia is on the way so Lorena has to get back to work. Sara calls back Chalo and yells at him.

Alonso’s Hottie assistant’s slimy husband Arturo and Vasco’s mom are done having sex again in a hotel. They discuss Hortensia being willing to disinherit Vasco. Arturo asks for money again, she doesn’t want to talk about it now.

Vasco is going to ride somewhere on his bike, his girlfriend doesn’t like it, she won’t go to his tree hugger meetings either, she’ll go shopping. I really enjoyed how her dress fit on her at his welcome home party, but now she’s jut too bitchy and whiny and is very unattractive for being a pretty girl. Maybe she should put that butt hugging dress back on. He says fine, whatever, and leaves.

Hortensia yells at the cooks and throws away food. Lorena writes the orders – Hortensia lists a bunch of food, she’ll be back in an hour. Lorena doesn’t get it all down, the chef tells her not to worry about it. Lorena says that the chef should see Toribio too for some counseling. For depression I would guess, after being tortured by that wicked witch.

Sara goes to the clinic to find Alonso. She claims to be there on business. He asks for her e-mail to send her some info, she acts very flattered. Bruno shows up and shows plenty of interest in Sara. Dirtbag. In the office, Bruno is told who is who and is excited about Sara being pretty and rich.

Lorena’s brother, the good for nothing, walks and talks with Rosy.

At the movies, Lorena tells Alonso about her day in the kitchen. They run into Rosy and her date.

Dario shows his girl the new apartment, she returns the ipod to him. She doesn’t like lying to her mom about it. Being a traitor. He says those are her mom’s words. She doesn’t want to know Jackie, he says fine he won’t push. She cries and says she wants to be a family like before.

The foursome liked the movie. Rosy wants to dance, Lorena wants to go home. They split up. Lorena and Alonso go walking in the rain to talk. She tells him about San Martin. She starts singing in the rain. Alonso doesn’t show how disappointing it is that she isn’t wearing a thin shirt in the rain, he grabs her and they start kissing. He starts gushing about wanting to be in her life, he loooves her, she believes him and they kiss some more.

Rosy and her date run into her house, she says they were going to go dancing, he said he just said that in front of her friends, he’s broke. He wants to be honest it. She says she was going to get him into a club free, he says then what, drink water and don’t leave a tip? We get it – he’s poor. We get it.

In the rain Lorena and Alonso talk all lovey dovey.

Rosy and date drink tequila. They talk about him not having a job. He puts himself down over and over. He tells her that he likes analyzing soccer games.

The rain has stopped, Alonso talks about his work. They agree to go to his house so she can change, some ‘novios’ talk in there too.

Rosy’s date gets waay into the soccer game, talking like he was an announcer. She is either impressed or scared. She says she likes the guy on TV better. He’s sad. She says it was a joke! Man a lot of that in this show. She tells him to try out to be an announcer, he says it would never happen. He says he’ll look for a regular job so he can take her dancing, she likes that.

Lorena has warm clothes and coffee. Alonso gets another kiss out of her but she’s nervous. They look at family photos.

Witchy Paula lets Bettina in, Dario wants to talk to Paula. He wants her to quit saying things to Bettina about him and Jackie. He says just don’t say anything at all. She says fine, she’ll keep her mouth shut. I don’t believe it.

Alonso takes photos of Lorena, she complains, then relents. He takes a picture of them together. She likes the camera, he says she can use it. They kiss some more.

Lorena finally makes it home. She tells Rosy that she and Alonso are novios, then tells Rosy the story. The celebrating wakes up Maruja, who is also happy.

Sara arrives at breakfast, Vasco strikes up a conversation with her about what she does. He went on an interview with some environmental organization. Hortensia stands up and tells him he’s cut off financially. He says whatever, he doesn’t want her money. He says if being there bothers them so much, he’ll leave. Gotta say, he seems committed and very level-headed, not some slacker loser like I thought at first. He tells Hortensia that he loves her, but he has to keep it real. He leaves. Hortensia gives her son a hard look and leaves. Wife yells at him for doing nothing, he says he has to straighten out Hort. He finds her and tells her that Vasco should do whatever he wants. He wants her to let him be. She refuses to back down. She wants him working in the company.

Sara tells Vasco’s mom that her husband is sure to figure something out. She offers to help. Scammer.

Dad goes to Vasco’s room, where he’s packing. He doesn’t want him to leave. He can work for the company, be a tree hugger in his free time. He doesn’t accept. Dad says family has to stay together, Vasco says what about Omar then? What did he do that was so bad? Dad says stay, I’ll talk to her again.

In the kitchen Rosy tells Lorena about her date.

Hortensia and his dad talk again and get nowhere. Dad then says if Vasco leaves, he might go find Omar and reveal everything about Sara being the granddaughter, not a niece. Hortensia doesn’t like that.

Sara goes to the clinic AGAIN. He has a present for his girlfriend, he says he hasn’t been with her long, she thinks “that will be the shortest relationship ever.” He small talks but runs off, she says that she has to make him in love with her.

Jackie takes Bettina shopping, she acts rude with her and runs off. Jackie chases her around, then her phone rings. Ugh her hair! It’s horrible. Dario is on the phone, she says everything is going fine. She shuffles along in her skirt and Bettina, hiding, laughs at her.

Alonso goes to the cooking school and asks if he can pay someone’s tuition but just tell them it was a scholarship. This is sure to blow up later. Guaranteed.

Jackie tells a security guard that the girl is missing, she is freaking out. They call out a search through the whole store for Bettina. Jackie hyperventilates. I don’t like this woman. Bettina shows up and says she was in the bathroom. She says she wants to go home.

Maruja tells Lorena that the culinary school called and offered her a scholarship. She just has to take an admissions test. Much happiness.

Sara gets out of a cab in front work, Lorena runs out and tells her the good news. Sara acts nice but she is so fake.

Vasco arrives to talk to Hortensia. She tells him that he can do whatever he wants, he doesn’t have to leave. Sara barges in, she acts happy for him.

Lorena is outside waiting for a cab, Vasco arrives on his bike. He offers to take her to the school on the front of his bike.

Bettina comes home, Paula says she promised to keep her mouth shut. She tries to get info out of Bettina, who confesses her trick at the store, they decide to celebrate. Paula says remember I didn’t say anything bad about her!

At the culinary school, Vasco and Lorena talk about following dreams.

Later Alonso gives her the stuffed animal he bought for her. She tells him about her scholarship and he acts surprised. Liar! She tells how Vasco took her there on a bike, Vasco acts jealous but she tells him to relax she only has eyes for him. Dude acting so jealous on relationship day one isn’t a great idea. He invites her to join him tomorrow at the benefit as his date, Maruja says she can have the day off. She’s nervous about Hortensia, he says whatever Lorena is his girlfriend and he wants her to go with him.

Mariana and Vasco’s mom complain about Vasco’s changes at the hair salon. In another chair, Sara listens to the whole conversation.

In the kitchen Jackie flounces into the kitchen and acts bitchy.

Rosy rolls in and wants Lorena to see some guy for her hair, she doesn’t need to pay, come on, let’s go. Rosy rushes her out to get ready for the big party.

At the event Sara and Jackie compete to see who suck up more to Hortensia. Guests arrive, including Alonso, without Lorena. Sara makes eyes at him.

Lorena is still getting ready, she’s nervous and whiny.

At the event slimy husband is making eyes at slimy wife right in front of his own much hotter wife. Vasco is dressed nice, hair back and in a suit. Hortensia talks to the press. Jackie arrives with Dario. Sara talks to Alonso, who says he’s waiting for his girlfriend – oh and here she is! Sara sees Lorena and frowns.

Tomorrow – Sara is pissy about Lorena, everyone else is scandalized!

Wow...another jam-packed episode. I was out celebrating a students' birthday and missed this, but enjoyed your "don't believe it" and "this is sure to blow up later" asides. How true!

I'm happy that Vasco is concerned for the environment but what about safety issues! Riding full-grown women (or any size for that matter) on your handlebars in Mexico City traffic! And where's his friggin' helmet?!

Anyway, thanks for the recap Chris. I enjoy your sardonic take on things. Hope you're on the west coast. Wouldn't want you really up after midnight on a school night!

Nope he's central and gets these things done almost before we are done watching! Yep, like the subdued snark tones throughout.

I'm thinking too, along with jealousy on day one, a lie is probably ill advised as well, even if for her benefit. I'm not proud, I'd take it, but uh, a week ago didn't they advise her they don't give out scholarships? Suddenly they do, and miraculously to her!! I'd be bugged by the school lying to me more so than him. But whatever, TN land, keep reminding myself!

Thanks Ferro!!

Thanks for the detailed and scathing recap Ferro. I didn't get to see the episode because our electricity went out yesterday afternoon and only just came back on a half hour ago! (A mylar balloon got tangled in our neighbor's overhead lines, caused it to arc and fall, started his backyard on fire, then the whole neighborhood was blacked out.)

It's too bad that Bruno and Sara probably won't hook up. They are peas in a pod, but of course Bruno isn't nearly the dumb hunk that Alonso is so there you are. I read on IMDB that Gabriel Soto was the 1996 Mr. World runner up, hubba hubba. But I digress...

Frankly, I would prefer to be a little more shocked by Alonso and Sara the witch eventually getting together (though temporarily), but since we get an EYEFUL of them making out in the opening sequence I guess I won't be able to feign surprise.

Thanks again Chris! Loved the recap.

I was thinking that Lorena would try to figure out where the scholarship came from, guess wrong, and then make a fool of herself being grateful to some undeserving person with an agenda. But I don't believe there's anyone in the story that she would suspect of being a secret benefactor.

Yeah Sylvia...I think Ribera Joe mentioned yesterday that Gabriel Soto was a Mr. World runner-up...hence the shoulders and tapered waist that we're not getting to see because of those darned sweaters!

My goodness, who knew Mylar balloons could be so dangerous!? Glad your power's back on.

Oops, guess I shoulda checked yesterday's comments first!

Ha, just read them. Quite a lively discussion!

Yes I'm central time. I have to do the recap right away and stay up to finish it or it won't ever get done. That's why I was on Fridays for so long, I didn't think I could pull a weeknight. As time passed and I understood Spanish that much better, now I can do it. I used to need a couple hours and my wife as a translator, now I can do it all myself, I even type most of it on a laptop as I'm watching the show. So - nobody should ever discount the benefit of TV in learning a language! Especially helpful is a speaker of that language sitting next to you to help.
On the show - Alonso being a former bodybuilder makes sense, as he isn't the greatest actor. He obviously got the part for his looks, he has a permanent glaze over his eyes that better actors don't have. Alonso is supposed to be innocent and kind, though, so it's easier to believe. If he were a more multi-faceted character it would be a bigger stretch.
Sara must be a good actress, because her fake nicey nice talk to everyone makes me ill and getting a strong reaction is a sign of good acting. Same with Bruno, he is believable as a macho guy, being so mean and rude about his baby.

I even managed to finish the recap in time to turn on the Cubs game and see Mark DeRosa hit a grand slam to put the Cubs up 9-0.

Excellent recap!

Vasco's parents are Jaime and Barbara. Rosy's boyfriend (Lorena's half-brother?) is
Julian.

Chris, you are so lucky to have
a wife who speaks Spanish and watches novelas with you! My wife doesn't want to have anything to do with my Spanish habit (although she HAS been asking me about some of the characters and events on Querida Enemiga!

My wife is actually the one to blame for me watching them in the first place, she started watching Alborada soon after we got married and I got sucked into it. She was born in Mexico and lived there her whole life so she is a novela veteran. Homebre, If your wife watches a little bit she'll get hooked, the whole structure of these shows actually having an ending makes them so much more watchable than an American soap.

Ferro, thanks for the great recap! Oh, how I missed your diverting -- yet in good taste --chauvinist asides!

“Alonso’s father (I can’t remember his name)” Toribio? She’s going to have everyone going to him before long.

“but now she’s jut too bitchy and whiny and is very unattractive for being a pretty girl. Maybe she should put that butt hugging dress back on.” LOL! Will that soften the bitchy-whiny blow for you?

If Julián keeps telling everyone he’s a good-for-nothing, everyone’s going to believe him before long. What a cop-out!

“In the rain Lorena and Alonso talk all lovey dovey.” We’re watching you roll your eyes, Ferro. At least she’s not crying. So far, you can count the crying episodes on one hand here.

“Dad then says if Vasco leaves, he might go find Omar and reveal everything about Sara being the granddaughter, not a niece. Hortensia doesn’t like that.” Wow, something actually got Snortensia’s attention here! Talk about a 180 shift.

“Jackie hyperventilates. I don’t like this woman.” If her hair wasn’t red, she’d be a bubble-headed bleach blonde. She’s a valley girl, a princess, and just fluffy. I loved watching her meltdown and can’t wait to see what other mayhem Bettina will cook up for her. (I’m a stepmother and am thanking my lucky stars that my stepchildren are wonderful and their mother is a treasure, so I never had any of this. But I have known folks who deserved this, and others who didn’t but got it anyway, like “accidentally” putting bleach in the wash with stepmom’s favorite print blouse or stuff like that.)

“Maruja tells Lorena that the culinary school called and offered her a scholarship.” When will Lorena remember that they NEVER give out scholarships, and put 2 and 2 together? I predict sparks with Al when that happens.

I was watching the birthmark(s) that Lorena has. Could those eventually be used to help verify her identity? Will Hortensia recall that the baby had birthmarks, which Lorena has and Sara doesn’t? Of course, DNA testing will be called for, won’t it?

Gee, Sylvia, power outages are going around. Look out, the rest of you!

Jeanne

EXCELLENT point about the lack of crying. Perhaps that is why so far this show is so watchable? I hadn't put my finger on that but you nailed it. No superfluous crying. Thank God. We have a blonde Spanish speaking Polish girl lead, but thankfully it isn't the ugly crying Ludwika Paleta. Though I do miss her, um, abilities that cause me to make inoffensive chauvinistic asides. Like her taste in too small shirts.

Thanks for the recap, Chris! I don't know about that Jackie either! She almost could pass for a man in drag with that horrible hair!(hope I don't offend anybody!) Is it a wig, or what?

Hopefully, Vasco won't become interested in Lorena....

Sara is turning out to be a horrible person! Would be interesting to know who her REAL parents are!

My husband understands Spanish better than me but he'd rather watch sports than see novelas with me. Oh, well!:(

Thanks Chris for the wonderful recap.
By the way, could you post it on a side bar as well - I couldn't find it for a while.

I hope that Vasco wouldn't get involved with his sweet cousen - looks like his girlfriend is out of wack a little bit - doesn't like "tree hugging", has some "money inapropriate thoughts" and overall completely doesn't belong with him. And after the bike trip and seeing Lorena at the party - looks like he is falling for her.

"Not sweet at all" Sara is getting ready for the big battle. I'm kind of ready for something more drastic in this TN - it's getting a litle bit too sweet and boring for my taste. May be because of the galan - too aburrido.
I like this girl Rosy - can't believe actress is the same who played this crazy girl from Destilando ( forgot her name). May be she can straighting up this "good for nothing soccer comments' lover" - they would make a lovely couple at the end.

Little Bettina kind of picking up a lot from her dear mommy. Looks like daddy will be the good one in this family after all.

I wonder why both of Hortenzia sons ( and their kids) kind of picked up from the other side of the family - who was their father? I remember there was something about Hortenzia's past but can't place it right now.

Eve

The only thing we know about Hortensia's husband (from the lips of the night security guard) is that Hortensia "bought" him after she made it big financially and that he never really loved her.

Maybe we'll learn more as this goes along.

Thanks for getting Eve from Cleveland right up front, Eve! You're in no way "anonymous".

And I agree...the actress playing Rosy is so cute and charming, hard to believe she was that shiver-inducing crazy in Destilando.

¡Muchas gracias, Judy!

I've just recalled - the name of this girl from Destilando was Acacia

I noticed that Sara says "que padre" a lot. Cracks me up. It reminds me of the old movies where the rebellious teens use corny slang like "swell" to let you know that they're bad news.

Julie,
I noticed "Que padre!" first time in Usurpadora and it was usually the little boy who was saying it. It's actually kind of like "Cool".
So it's probably not THAT old as "Swell" . I think there is even some program on Mexico TV that called "Que padre"

Oh, I realize it's not old. It just seems like a corny way of showing that Sara, who uses hip language, is corrupted by modern culture, unlike sweet and pure Lorena.

Julie, in this context you are right.
I'm just wondering how evil should be Sara's genes so her upbringing with nuns actually had an opposite effect.
By the way, I was a little bit off when sweet Lorena agreed to go to Alonso's house to change wet clothes - she just came from the convent and grew up with nunes and we know that she doesn't have a bad bone inside - how come she agreed to go with him? It could have been something more intence there after all. Or I have a wrong perception of the catolic orphanage?

Well Eve, Alonso had to do some convincing on that one, she wasn't quick to go. Even so I think he was hoping to get more than he got once they got there.

regarding Que Padre - my wife's family says that a LOT. I think it is a very common saying.

Yes, I've heard several people say that and didn't think "que padre" was way out or way cool but I'm still a novice in the language.

By the way, Ferro, notice it wasn't tagged so I did it for you...didn't want anyone not to be able to find it.

According to my "Dictionary of Mexican Slang and Graffiti," padre means cool, neat, and padríssimo means way cool.

Jeanne

Thanks so much for the recap Ferro. I'm looking forward to see Sara show her true colors tonight.
