La Fea Más Bella #97-98 11/19/10 I'm leaving. I'm staying.

Capitulo 97.
Read Julie’s original recap which covers Cap’s 97 to 99. Then come back here to discuss it.

Today Fernando sees more clearly just how foul and revolting Omar is, and Fern pulls away from him. They even sit at the far ends of the table during the rehash. You see bits of Fern’s scorn throughout the caps.

1. Fernando tries to get through to Omar. Loosely, “The first man Lety fell in love with and gave herself to did it to win a bet. He did all the things we’re doing, and it almost destroyed her. When I leave her in the end, Lety will die of sadness.” Fern keeps trying, but Omar has no clue because he has no heart.

2. Fern won’t let Omar write today’s card because what Lety shared is too sacred, and Omar is too foul. Omar gets offended that his BFF doesn’t appreciate his writing, and Fernando kicks him out.

3. Saimon and Paula flutter like lovebirds all day. Marcia reprimands them for being late, but their giddy bliss and Saimon’s eagerness to get married are a stab to her heart after last night with Fernando.

4. Fernando tells Saimon to retrieve the always-packed suitcase at his house, and not let anyone know. Note, Fern told Marcia that he was late last night because he was packing for Germany.

5. Lety suggests that Fernando not go to Germany because he needs to arrange for editing equipment in DF. Marcia throws a rod. She saw the trip as her last chance to win back Fernando, and she thinks he plotted to get rid of her so he could be alone with his amante.

6. In several scenes in 97 and 98, people compete for the company and attention of Cristina Riva Palacios (CRP). In several other scenes, CRP sees Conceptos employees being cruel, childish, and nacos with each other, starting with Marcia loudly canceling the wedding in the vortex. Fern yells at her, loosely, “Fine! I’ll go to Germany with you, and forget about commitments to our clients! Are you happy???”

7. Lety tells Fernando she can’t take it anymore. She’s causing him problems with Marcia, and now with the company. She resigns from Conceptos and from his life.

Capitulo 98.
Read Julie’s original recap which covers Cap’s 97 to 99. Then come back here to discuss it.

1. Fernando lovingly convinces Lety to not quit, then he kisses away her tears, and he teases and flirts so she stops crying. Quite a contrast to his reaction when Marcia canceled the wedding. And quite a warm, close moment between Fernando and Lety.

2. Omar tries to patch things up with Marcia and tells her she’s pressuring Fernando too much.

3. Fernando makes a scene with Marcia in the vortex, similar to hers earlier, but this time in front of Ricky.

4. Ricky and Cristina announce that Conceptos’ commercial is one of three finalists at Cannes.

5. Marcia agrees to go to Germany without Fernando for the sake of production.

6. Yuri calls Luigi to ask for his help in her upcoming concert event with Mijares.

7. Fernando stomps hard on Omar, telling him to stop calling Lety rude names. Omar reminds Fernando that he still needs to write today’s card. Since Omar won’t be able to write the cards while he’s in Germany, he decides to write them and arrange everything before he leaves. So that Fernando won’t have any problems.

When Fern was telling Omar what Lety told him about the bet --not at all very gentlemanly especially since he swore to Lety that Omar knew nothing of their relationship--Omar really showed himself at his most shallow. Not only did he not feel anything for Lety's plight, but he was very interested to hear that Miguel did the same things that he suggested, and bragged that it's a ploy that never fails.
As awful as the characters of Omar was, that's how good the actor was as he had this interested and excited look on his face while Fern was talking about Miguel's behavior. He was showing how validated Omar felt. Funny!!! Also the bit about Cyrano, and his final hand wave through the door was a great bit of comic business. I find it hard to hate Omar,as he is such a doofus more than a villain.

I forgot to say how it was clear yesterday that Julieta knew about Lety's (sexual) affair with Miguel, and obviously realizes that Lety is repeating the same thing with Fernando. She is such a wonderful character: the mother we would all love to have.

I loved the moment when Fern realized he was happy, although he wasn't sure why, and acted like he was crazy.(I think ringing some kind of bell.)

The episodes in this etapa are the best!!!

I am off to bed, but just wanted to say thanks again for this site and welcome back. I will check in tomorrow.

Welcome back Paula. The first time I watched this, I was completely focused on Lety and Fernando. And they are still compelling. But more and more, this time around, I see the pathetic needy side of Alicia. How desperately, and unsuccessfully, she tries to latch onto any important personage. Everyone sees through her and nobody's interested. The presentadora and Ricky were mildly amused by her frantic efforts but they certainly weren't interested. In spite of her pettiness and viciousness, I find her a very sad character.

Omar tells Fer that he will be Lety's first and last. Of course he's wrong and Fer corrects him. On the flip side, yesterday Lety told Fer she was his first and will be his last...fea. Just an interesting comparison.

Oh my goodness, how funny was it when Luigi's dog yawned during Alicia's logorrhoea? I also think the actress that plays Alicia is doing a superb job. One minute I loathe her, the next I feel sorry for her, the next I mute her. She's got great comedic timing.

Welcome back Paula!

Usually when Conceptos has a celebrity visitor, it's a real celeb - R. Montaner, Benny Ibarra, etc. But Cristina R.P. is just a created character. I wonder if a real celeb was supposed to be in the part.

In Thur's recap Anya said, "Ay dios mio! Fer knows how to kiss!" Boy howdy! And b-b-b-baby, you ain't seen nutin' yet. They just keep getting better ("Me dijo.."). Sylvia said, "When Fernando and Lety are with each other they seem to become fuller, happier people than when alone." Sylvia, I'm impressed that as a new Fea viewer, you see that already. You will enjoy seeing that element unfold.

Another Lety/Marcia contrast. In 97, Marcia cancels the wedding and Fernando starts yelling back at her. In 98, Lety resigns and quits their relationship, and Fernando draws close to convince her to stay.

Interesting. Fernando thinks Lety arranged things so he couldn’t go to Germany, and he’s perfectly happy about it.

I love the significant changes we’re seeing in Fernando, especially in how he treats Lety and Omar. He knocks on Lety’s door instead of yelling for her. He wants to give her little kisses throughout the day, and sometimes he even has to remind himself to be more careful at the office. The way he cheers her up after she agreed not to resign shows that he’s learning to take care of her as well as she takes care of him.

On the other hand, Fernando has taken several steps AWAY from Omar.
A. He won’t let Omar write today’s card, i.e. he’s taking Omar out of the middle of their relationship.
B. With the morning rehash, Fernando no longer sees Omar as amusing but sick and revolting, and he tells him so.
C. They sit at far ends of the table instead of close like the rehash after the hotel.
D. Fernando used to show disapproval at Omar’s rude names for Lety, but now he stomps on Omar for it.
E. Omar is offended that Fernando doesn’t value his work on the cards, etc. He knows he’s being pushed away.
F. This one might be a stretch. Lety is displacing Omar, taking his place in Fernando’s life. And where did this happen? In Omar’s apt. i.e. Lety is put into Omar’s place / position.

Omar is shocked when Fern says he “made love” with Lety – before, it was always “acostar.” Worse yet, he did it without whiskey. Omar worries about what is happening to Fern. He should be even more worried that Fern says that when he writes the card, it will be the truth!

Omar stays in the gutter, and Fernando has stepped out of it, leaving Omar behind.

DON'T MISS MONDAY!!!
Great moments in BOTH episodes.

I'm not going along with the Omar bashing, at least not yet. Omar is no saint, he does make cutting remarks and the whole seduction idea was his. I think rather than being heartless as Fern accuses him he actually is a lot like Lety. I suspect he has been hurt in the past, perhaps as a child and like her has sworn never again. He also is the one who thinks about things like cards and little gifts which Fern does not. He is also more sensitive to Lety's feelings then he would admit. He notices when she is upset or hurt which the more self absorbed Fern does not (at least not so far).

As for St. Fern I'm, not going with that either. He is growing but he was so spineless he went along with Omar's idea with no real thought that people might get hurt. He lies consistently, first to Marcia who he only got engaged to because of self interest and to Lety from the beginning of their "romance". He is still lying to her and betraying her confidences by talking to Omar. This being a novela he will pay for it of course but right now while he may be Lety's knight on a white horse he isn't mine.

I think Fern's yelling at Omar yesterday was more a matter of his own guilty conscience then any malice or turing way from his BFF. He knows what he is doing to both women is wrong but can't seem to admit his feeling for Lety nor will he break it off with Marcia once and for all. The poor soul really has fallen into his own trap.

I'm still mystified over the blurring out of Paula Maria's blouse that time. I can only assume that her nipples were showing or she was bouncingly braless. Certainly they don't blur out Alicia's girls which are sometime hoisted so high she' lucky they aren't resting on her shoulders. And that belt that PM wears as skirts could reveal her lady parts if she ever sat down.

Decie girl, your points are very well taken. I think it's the complexity of the characters that makes them so fascinating and watchable. They are neither all good nor all bad. The very fact that we are wondering WHY Omar is the way is is a testament to that.

Paula, your point F is not a stretch at all. It's another great example of the wicked symbolism that is prevalent in this show. Just think, if it weren't for the great comments I would be missing so much!

I never know what to think about Omar. On one hand he seems to be the one most in tune to how Letty feels. He is right about this being a dream come true for her. After all, before those two came up with their little scheme she was always fantazing about Fernando. He also picked up on her being upset when Paty M. was there. Plus he is the one who always gets the little gifts and seems to know exactly what she will be thrilled about.

He has gotten meaner though with his remarks since Fernando has gotten closer to Lety. But I don't think he feels Fernando is replacing him with her. I think he is just has a bit a mean streak in him. He really makes some crude remarks to Alicia as well.

I love the Christina character. She is just so sweet and kind. I really like the actress that is playing her as well. It was sweet when Letty went in and kissed her on the cheek and got all excited by that.

Also loved the scene when Lety leaves the office and Fern looks after her with such affection. This a a far cry from the days he would cringe when ever she left the room.

Decie Girl -- I agree with you completely about Omar and Fern. It's funny, but I also wonder about Omar's "back story" and what makes him so childish and averse to love. As for Fernando, it's one thing for him to admit to Omar that he slept with Lety again (not nice, but not the end of the world. At least he didn't go into details), but for him to recount her story of the bet is unpardonable. It is such a betrayal, and especially since he told her he received her telling him her incident of humiliation and suffering with all his heart. Even if he told it out of his need to vent and because he felt guilty and sorry, he needs to grow up and not be so narcissistic.

Pata, as for Omar getting meaner to Lety as Fernando gets closer to her, I haven't seen any real evidence of that. I don't think he's threatened by Lety. That she would be a threat to his relationship with Fernando would not even enter his head. After all, for him she is a woman --and hardly. I don't think he sees Lety as a person, but only in an instrumental way. Yes, he is very sensitive to her moods, etc., but only because they are important to keeping her happy vis-a-vis the business. Omar is never "mean" to anyone. He can be dismissive and mocking, but I don't see him as purposely mean in deed. Luigi is mean; Alicia is mean; Marcia is mean; and of course Ariel wins the prize for being mean.

This board is not for proving people wrong. There are plenty of other places on the internet for that. This is not math; there is not one right answer. Back when we tried to discern Omar's motivation for pushing Fernando to enamorar Lety, there were five different answers. All of them were equally valid, and nobody thought anyone's answer was "wrong."

We are a soup, where everyone throws different vegetables and different spices into the pot, and we all enjoy the results. So let's focus on what you have to share, and not on proving someone else wrong.

Sue I agree with you about Omar. The one thing I've noticed is that he is never nasty to Lety in person nor in front of anyone else. I think he throws those zingers at Fern just as a way to needle him. And it increasingly works.

Ariel and Luigi on the other hand are nasty to Lety and others in front of them making them vile in the extreme to me. Unfortunately for Ali she sometimes asks for it but seems to have the hide of rhino and lets it roll off her back with the exception being Ariel's really brutal insults.

You guys have different discussions than we see on the other novelas. You go into a lot of depth - and some of you are very opinionated. That's ok with me as long as you don't put down other people's thoughts or posts. Everybody play nice. As for me, I can't watch this time around but my heart tugs at me a little very time I catch a glimpse of Don Fernando. Enjoy!

I really enjoy everyone's analysis and opinions, especially since I don't get to watch every episode in full. Alicia's haughty front hiding her desperation is interesting to watch, especially in contrast to Lety's development. Thanks for all the recaps and posts.

It is my suspicion that "Cristina" was originally supposed to be THE Cristina, but Univision's tensions with Televisa got in the way.

Regarding the remarks about Evil Omar vs. St. Fernando I see no reason for the tension... I pretty much agree with ALL the comments despite the apparent contradictions. It is sort of like looking at an unusual statue from different angles. (A lot of these telenovelas are more like paintings, where there aren't as many angles to view from, so there's less to debate!)

Both guys have been sleazebags but they are also both coming from human places. I think Decie Girl had an interesting point, that Omar is almost TOO in tune with Lety's feelings for his heartlessness to be for real... maybe he was a Lety himself at one time and and has made a conscious effort to be a self-interested jerk as a result... whereas Fern has always been a self-interested jerk and is gradually becoming a human being as a result of his relationship with Lety. (It's important to remember that different people can react to the same stimuli, such as hardship and cruelty, in different ways; Lety and Omar may have had similar experiences, but chosen different paths.)

I think Fern told Omar about the bet precisely because he's confused by these new feelings of empathy that he's experiencing. It was wrong to reveal such intimate details of her past, but he's not used to dealing with serious problems of right vs. wrong and needs a sounding board. (And boy did he pick the wrong one!) I don't think Fernando still fully appreciates, consciously, what Lety means to him, and is still in the habit of considering Omar a reliable ally, even though Omar continually proves disappointing in this respect.

I'm also nodding in agreement to what Judy said about Alicia's story, except that I was already fixated on Alicia's clueless misery the first time around. I was fascinated by the character and wondered if her outcome in LFMB would be different than Patricia's (such as it was) in BLF.

Regarding the blurring of PM's blouse I can only only point to the equally mystifying silent bleeping of mildly rude words. Recently, they bleeped "perra sarnosa" ("mangy bitch") in reference to an actual female dog. Other words have been bleeped in similarly mild contexts that were less than ideal, but devoid of malice. Yet we are never spared the unkind words that are applied to Lety.

Paula, I don't think anyone is using this board to prove anyone else wrong. I thought this is a place where we freely express our opinions on what is going on, and that means we are free to disagree with anyone else's opinion as long as we don't do it disrespectfully...which I don't think anyone has done. I, for one, am not going to comment anymore if I can't feel free to disagree with anyone else's comment as we do on all other shows.

Melinama, I and maybe some others who have been commenting have the full version of FEA, an abridged version, or have already seen it before. We are real fans of this telenovela and for this reason are probably really interested in analyzing characters more deeply than in most other telenovelas. I am surprised that anyone would see our interest in giving our views on the characters and their motivations as trying to prove other people wrong.

I've had to miss a few episodes and the romantic ones....boo hoo... and I'm trying to catch up on You Tube. However, I am getting confused as the episode numbers don't match but I will figure it out somehow. Anyway, I am lurking and enjoying the recaps and discussions. Thanks to all.

I didn't realize whole episodes of LFMB were back up on YouTube. Great! If you're using ainaragfd's clips, her Cap 94 matches our Cap 99. Do the math from there.

If you are using someone else's clips, send me links to about three clips from around Cap 100, and I'll let you know the corresponding number from our numbering system.

Thanks. Paula, that helps. Now I can match the numbers for the episodes and, yes, ainargfd's clips are up and so are some from others. I've been typing la fea mas bella in small type and in big caps followed by the capitulo number and as I mentioned the numbers were off in the results. So thanks so much Paula.

On second thought, it occurred to me this morning that the Cristina role really does seem to have been written specifically for a hottie, so never mind my earlier speculation about a plan to use THE Cristina. (Do they even see her show in Mexico?)

And speaking of censorship, while watching #97 this morning I caught a silent bleep of "negrito." (The omitted word in usually still shown in the captions.) Alicia referred to someone in the cuartel (I think Paula Maria) as a black grain among the rice.

I agree that Fern should not have told Omar about the bet story... but I also agree with Julie as to why he did... (granted, that is no justification but just a logical explanation of why he did)...
I believe what is happening in Omar's view of the triangle Lety/Fern/Omar is more like Omar is losing control over this 'game'. why?
1. He can tell Fern is not feeling as sick anymore with kissing or even sleeping with Lety
2. Fernando will not let Omar write the 'dedications' anymore and won't show them to him either.
3. Fern is reacting more harshly to when Omar insults Lety when speaking to him
4. Omar can see first hand the changing in demeanor in Fernando when in the presence of Lety... and he can see that Fernando is obviously not avoiding spending time with Lety anymore...
thus, Omar can conclude he is losing control over that 'game'. He is losing control over Fernando and over the ultimate goal of getting the company back and He (Omar) and Marcia getting Fernando back.

btw, interesting exchange about the theory of Omar and Alicia's background to why their current behavior. I have to give that more thought. the only thing that occurs to me now is it seems Fernando is the only male close friend Omar has... and Omar seems to realize he is beginning to lose his 'partner in fun' and is reacting to that by trying to tighten the leash.

In other words, Fernando is changing BIGTIME from the inside out... Marcia knows this new 'relationship' is different from any Fernando has had before but right now she is clueless as to who it is. Omar knows who it is, but since he has never been in love, he cannot identify or acknowledge WHAT it is that is pulling Fernando away from him. And neither Omar or Marcia are liking the 'changes'. So they are both fighting to get the old Fernando back.

Omar might have a good idea of WHAT is happening to Fernando, but he does not know that this 'WHAT' is irreversible, that the old Fernando is getting left behind for good, and he (Omar) is unprepared (in his mind, the notion of Fernando falling for someone as repulsive as Lety would be simply impossible since Omar never would be able to peek past the physical image) and unwilling to acknowledge what is right in front of him. Marcia knows she is losing/ has lost Fernando, but she is still in 'fight back' mode and had hopes the trip to Germany would give her the time to get him back... oh well, Marcia, too little too late.
