La Fea Más Bella #121-122 12/9/10 Fernando finds more than just Lety.

Capitulo 121.

Read Chapel Hill Fiddler’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Omar Chaparro and Toño hear Fernando’s excuses to Marcia on the phone, and Omar says, “Enjoy the game and enjoy your forbidden love.” He asks them to kiss, just like he did at Megatron. Back in the park, they discuss Alicia. Fern doesn’t like that she’s Marcia’s spy, and Lety doesn’t like how she treats the cuartel, but Fernando won’t fire her because that would create problems with Marcia.

2. Fernando and Lety spend some more face-to-face time (those kisses just keep getting better), and Omar spots them. Omar calls Fern and tells him in German that he sees them. Lety makes a run for it and thinks Fernando is behind her. Lety gets lost and she can’t remember the hotel name.

3. Erasmo worries that something will happen to Lety, and Julieta says she’ll be fine because she’s with Fernando. Mama distracts Pop, dreaming about the day Lety gets married (he doesn’t like that) and they have grandchildren (he likes that). Pop just wants her to find a man who loves and respects her.

4. See the transcript. Fernando summons Omar for help because Lety is lost. Their conversation reveals a lot about Omar – he’s not at all worried about Lety, but he IS worried that Fernando might care for her. As usual, Fern asks Omar what to do. As usual, Omar gives idiotic advice. But what’s different is that Fernando completely rejects Omar’s advice and walks away. Omar’s best friend just snapped his collar, and Omar is left holding an empty leash.

.
5. See the transcript. Lety cries herself to sleep in the train station. Fernando doesn’t find her all night, but in the morning he thinks to check the train station and finds her. They hang onto each other tightly as they walk. Lety asks, “Did you really worry that much about me?” Fernando almost says he loves her, but he can’t spit it out, so Lety finishes for him. Oh my, what a kiss!

6. The next scene says it’s in Hannover, but we see the Marienplatz and Frauenkirche of Munich. Then Fern and Lety are among actual Mexican fans heading to the match. Except, the game we see is not Mexico vs. Angola, since Angola wore red that day. The actual game was scoreless.

7. Fernando and Lety appear in the stadium shots of the TV broadcast, but always when no one’s looking. Alicia goes to Le Noir to snag a rico. She shakes her assets but the men tell her to move so they can see the TV.

Capitulo 122.
Read Julie’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Fernando and Lety say goodbye to Germany in front of the Siegestor (Munich’s triumphal arch).

2. Lety sadly narrates the intro to the house-hunting DVD. Meanwhile Fernando edits the commercial, and he reluctantly calls Luigi for advice. Fern sees Lety in Editing and asks what’s up. He accidently ends up with her unedited DVD, the one in which Matilde gushes about Tomás and Lety's happily ever after. The technician tries to steal a kiss from Lety because he thinks she’s fea but very nice, but he’s about as smooth as a drunken walrus.

3. An attorney calls Alicia about the repo of her car, but Ali claims that Ali’s not in. Paula wants the cuartel to go to see “Solo para mujeres,” a beefcake strip show.

4. They screen the horse commercial and the clients love it. Fernando tells the cuartel that he wants to go somewhere with just Lety and their love, but it was Lety’s fantasy.

5. In his office Fernando manages to stammer that he missed Lety when she was down in editing, and he asks her to escape with him. He has a lot of trouble expressing his feelings.

Spanish Lesson

Omar's Advice.
F: What do I do, Brother? Where do I look for her? You’ve been in this city longer than me. Where do tourists go?
O: The city is enormous, but probably nothing will happen. Besides, with her ugliness.. (Fernando stops him) with her attributes, I’m sure no one would dare do anything. So why don’t you just calm down? Order some snaps [sic].
F: No! I don’t want schnapps. I want to find Lety.
O: Fernando, now you’re worrying me. I believe that there’s something more here, that there’s love.
(Omar’s not joking this time. And this time, Fernando doesn’t even pretend that Omar’s wrong.)
F: Where did she go? Where did she go? Worse yet, where will she spend the night?
O: What are you so worried about? (Somebody smack the imbecile!) The worst that can happen is that she’ll meet you at the airport. I imagine she knows when your flight leaves.
F: You know what I’m going to do, Mr. Comedian? I’m going to get a taxi and search the city until I find her! Problem solved. You don’t have to do anything.
O: Fernando, I think you’re overreacting a little.
F: No, I’m not overreacting. I’m worried about Lety. I don’t want ANYTHING to happen to her.

At the train station.
F: Well, now we’re together
L: Ay, sí, DF. When I was lost, I felt desperate, alone, far from home, everyone spoke German!
F: Well, we’re in Germany. What else would they speak?
L: But what scared me most was to be far from you.
F: Ay, Lety, I would’ve died. If I didn’t find you, I swear I would’ve died. It’s true. I felt powerless, useless. With you all alone, who knows where.
L: Did you really worry that much about me, Don Fernando?
F: You have no idea how much. And do you know why? In moments like these, is when.. one realizes.. (He almost admits that he loves her, but he can’t spit it out.)
L: (she finishes for him.) .. when one realizes how much one quiere another?
F: Sí, Lety. (Even bigger kiss.)

Paula thanks for the post. These two hours are really propelling this story forward. The Germany trip seemed longer the first time I watched but it seemed like it was over to quickly this time.

Thanks also for the spanish lessons.

Lots of good stuff if your can ignore the dreck of the cuartel shrieking. I am not going to slam Omar for not getting hysterical over Lety being missing. Omar is about the only person around who actually thinks Lety is an adult and can take care of herself.

Fern has taken over for Erasmo in treating her like a child. Lety acted like a fool running off without giving Fern a chance to deal with the Marcia problem and running becomes her answer to everything. It is unbelievable to me that she couldn't remember the name of the hotel when this is her first major trip. If it bothers her so much that Fern is engaged to Marcia, then break it off and forget all the selfish wanting to hang on to him. She can't have it both ways.

There is a difference between being childlike (which is endearing) and childish (which is annoying) and throughout the whole Germany adventure Lety acted like a spoiled five year old. Omar for all of his teasing about the gargolita is a true and loyal friend to Fern and will pay for it when the poop hits the fan.

On the plus side that scene when Fern found her sleeping in the station and how he touched her hair and kissed her was HOT! HOT! HOT!

I agree, Lety is acting so childish. I thought her major value to Fernando and the company and her source of self-esteem in general is that she is smart and confident. Yet she'll sit in the train station all night and not think of a solution? If you can't remember the name of the hotel or can't pronounce it, why not go to a tourist information desk and ask for a list of the city's hotels? Then scan it for the name that looks familiar, write down the name and address, and take a taxi to that one. Or, you know, CALL FERNANDO. Duh.

I know Lety's uncomfortable and out of her element, traveling to Europe for the first time, but did the airline lose her brain? So what if Marcia sees them? Just tell the truth--that it was a last-minute business trip.

The saving grace of this episode is when Fernando finally finds her and awakens her with a tender kiss, just like the fairy tales of our youth. That was a scene I remembered and treasured from the first time around. Part of what made this show so very magical and memorable. Thanks Paula, Julie and Pata for making this sentimental journey again with us. What a trip.

Deciegirl and Julia, two words: plot convenience. Lety's foolishness bought us that wonderful reunion scene at the train station, and wasn't that worth the cost? Remember, these episodes were not in the original, so they have strayed from Gaitán's genius. The Mexican writers contrived a situation where they would have a deliciously romantic reunion, even if it meant Lety going contrary to character.

We get lots of wonderful romance during this detour from the original script. Works for me!

Paula yes it was plot convenience but I remember in writing classes being told to never do it. It can alter the reader's (viewer's) view of the character which isn't what you want to do. Yep the reunion scene was great as I'm sure others will be but making our heroine look like a twit wasn't smart. Actually now that I think of it, her juvenile behavior in Germany telegraphs how she will react to other unpleasant things.

actually what happened in the picture scene is Luigi asked Omar to take a picture of him and Marcia with this historic landmark in the background, but Omar spotted Fer and Lety kissing right in the way of the picture... the whole thing was funny as Omar was trying to get Fernando and Lety to get out of the picture frame so they would not be included in the picture kissing...

I have no idea, but that might have been a criticism on the original YSBLF, that they went from the 2nd night together straight to the next etapa, so I am enjoying this 'bliss' period and taking it for what it is... a good phase.

I just saw on the comments for my 122 recap that someone confirmed the existence of Moty knicknacks in the real world. (That comment was posted 6 months after the recap, so I didn't see it until now!)

I hadn't been able to find any hint of such things online in 2006, so I guess I just wasn't using the right search terms at the time.

Now, regarding the Mendiolas hounding (no unrelated dog pun intended!) Lety about the house DVD, I thought they had a lot of nerve to put that task on Lety to do for free. They should have hired someone to do that - preferably someone who'd find it easier to keep the secret from Fern due to not being literally under his nose all day long.

Agreed, Julie. They already knew which realtor they wanted to use. In a rational world they would've asked the realtor to video the houses. Aside from it being outside Lety's job description, in the Mendiola's world view, what would working class Lety know about evaluating luxury mansions? Once again, plot convenience.

Deciegirl, you're right, writers shouldn't compromise their characters. It's not an accident that Lety's departure from character is in this stage, the added cap's not from Gaitán's pen. And the other stage when Lety behaves the MOST contrary to her character is also in episodes that Mexico added to the series. I suspect that's the stage you're carefully referring to. (Thank you for being careful about spoilers.) We see once again that Televisa's script writers leave something to be desired.

I've always been told the same thing; that if you're sacrificing character for plot expediency, you need to think a little harder. Come up with a reason why THAT character would do what needs to be set up for the plot. But telenovela writers unfortunately do not get a lot of time to think once the production is underway.

That being said, I do love the affection and don't mind it being stretched out longer. That was the brilliant thing about Sortilegio, that the leads didn't spend the whole entire series fighting with each other. They were a team most of the time.
