La Fea Más Bella #169-170 1/14/11 How can you mend three broken hearts?

Capitulo 169.
Read Amanda’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Marcia calls Caro to say the wedding is canceled, and Lety blames herself. She tells Caro that Marcia found out about their relationship, and the disaster at Conceptos was her fault too. Lety is anxious to tell everything because she’s sure Caro won’t want Lety as her assistant anymore.

2. Lety says she got thrown out of Conceptos for work-related things, and she’s not the Lety Caro knows. Caro affirms her confidence in and admiration for Lety, and she’s satisfied since Lety recognizes that whatever she did was wrong. They toast Lety’s new life.

3. Lety is enchanted by the ocean and thanks Caro deeply for taking her away from DF. Lety gets her feet wet.

4. Alicia’s car is liquidated today. I think that means she no longer will have a chance to redeem it.

5. Señor Daisy Dukes watches while Lety tells the ocean that she feels so empty and she doesn’t know how to survive. She was deceived by the one she gave all her love to unconditionally. She’s sure she’ll never recover. Dukes is moved by her profound level of suffering.

6. Lety calls home and lets her parents listen to the ocean. MamaJ says Fernando came looking for her. MamaJ pushes Tom to tell why Lety is so mad at Fern but he refuses.

7. Lety feels intimidated around all the bellas. Caro says her job is to accompany the bellas, make sure they’re well taken care of, and handle other administrative tasks. Lety tries to run away.

8. Sr. Dukes cooks his fish on the beach and ponders the crying woman. It’s as if she lost her way and has nothing left. He tells the ocean, “You and I know how it feels when the one you love most betrays you and lies to you.”

Capitulo 170.
Read Alma’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Fernando is getting drunk. He tells Omar that Lety left town and he doesn’t know where. Her family won’t tell him anything. Fernando is sinking. All Omar hears is that the owner of Conceptos skipped town. Omar implies that Lety intends to keep Conceptos. Uh-oh. We know what happens when Wormtongue starts working Fernando. Fern tells Omar that the disaster is all Omar’s fault.

2. Fern says Lety would be perfectly justified to keep Conceptos after reading that foul letter. Omar refuses to take blame for Fern’s actions. And the worst news of all: Omar promises to be Fern’s friend forever.

3. The Angels sing Dueña de mi vida (see the lyrics below) and Fernando remembers how sweet Lety is, then he remembers the meeting and watching her leave. He takes a napkin and writes, “Lety, Solo Dios sabe cuanto la amo. Solo Dios lo sabe. (Only God know how much I love you. Only God knows it.) His classic single tear is followed by many more, and he whispers, “Lety. Mi Lety.”

4. Luigi takes Irmita home where she finds Rafael unconscious on the kitchen floor.

5. Fernando cries over Lety’s photo, “I miss you. I need you so much, Lety. Where are you?”

6. Marcia reveals to Alicia that Fernando’s amante is Lety. Ali can’t believe it; she’s sure Lety bewitched him. Marcia shows her the letter. Ali suggests that Fernando stopped relations with Marcia because he fell in love with Lety. Marcia says it seemed like the amante was someone important to him, and not someone he had to force himself to kiss.

7. The buddy of Aldo (Sr. Daisy Dukes) coaxes him to meet them in the bar. It’s been two years since he’s shared their parties and the buddy hopes Aldo joins them again soon.

8. Lety can’t sleep because she can’t stop thinking about Fernando’s touch, but she’s determined to forget so it stops hurting. She remembers his beautiful words and screams, “It was all a lie!” She feels out of place and wants to escape back to her old world.

9. Marcia cries over her photo album. She concludes that she will forgive him and get him back.

10. PG tells Fern that to find Lety, first he has to find himself. See the transcript.

I fell in love without wanting to, when I least expected it.
You changed my way of being; you taught me how to love with my soul.
It is not your body nor your beauty which makes me go crazy
It is what is in his head and in your heart that makes you such a women

CHORUS
Life gives you surprises, surprises give you life.
To me there are no ugly women. It all depends on the lens you see with.

I fell in love genuinely, even though nobody believes me
I value you even though the others always say that she is ugly.
You’re neither a model nor perfect, but you make me go crazy.
It is what is in your head and what is in your heart that makes you such a women.

CHORUS

Life gives you surprises, surprises give you life.
To me there are no ugly women. Even though they call you ugly
Perhaps you are fea, you’re my fea, and you’re the owner of my life.

I hope you had some Chunky Monkey left over. We're not done with it yet. If you weren't crying by the end of the second episode, take a listen to this clip. It's the BeeGees singing How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, from which I took the title of today's summary.

And the worst news of all: Omar promises to be Fern’s friend forever.

Oh no! Omar, stop being Fernando's friend!!!

All I have to say is Fern is a great crier...hahaha. I've never enjoyed watching a man cry more than him. He seems to be able to do it on demand...wonder what he's really thinking about?

I really hope they get through this Irma ep quickly. I'm bored by it.

Marcia, Marcia, Marcia - why would you take any advice from Alicia?

I hope Lety gets it together and doesn't go running home. I'd think it would be worse to be at home, doing nothing, instead of at least trying to enjoy the beauty of Acapulco.

I enjoyed today's shows...

as always thanks for the re-caps!

All I could think about today while watching the two episodes is that I need a vacation. did anyone check the hotel they stayed in? I think the room Lety had was the junior suite and it is around US 332 a night. Not bad.
http://www.fairmont.com/acapulco.
I wish someone took me somewhere that nice when I was mending my broken heart instead of the local bar. They have a spa! I am sure Caro being the saint she is wouldn't mind picking up the tap for that.
I'm with you Julie. Seriously Omar, you will always be Fern's BFF. Fern needs to get new friends!!
I do think Fern's crying is too staged, he always has the same two tears streaming down his chubby cheeks. But then I for one find it uncomfortable when adults, men or women, cry, even on the screen.
Jenn

For me, I think the story just died....
I can not bear the thought of watching Lety involved with someone else.
I can not bear Irmita and her deadbeat husband.
I can not bear the cuartel

The story has gotten much too sad and drawn out. This is ridiculous.

As of today, I am no longer anxious to see the next chapter.
Bellezas????? Oh please, why did they have to make Lety work for bimbos???

The ONLY part that was worth watching out of the whole freaking 2 hours was the bar scene and the Angels band.
Very disappointed in how this is turning out.
Diann

Someone recently talked about how infantile Fernando has been and that Lety was his blankie. Today more than ever Lety was acting like a little girl -- in both the most charming and the most annoying of ways. Her twirling in the foyer of the Fairmont and her glory in the ocean, including the phone call home were adorably childish. Her whining was annoyingly childish.

It seems another parallel between her and Fern. Both are innocents in many ways who never learned to grow up. Both are going to have to do a lot of growing in the next few weeks.

I certainly hope we see more of Fernando than a few moments of tears. But boy does he do poignant well.

Güera

This was a very touching 2 hours today. I skipped past the cuartel, Marcia, and Alicia. The pain that both Lety and Fernando are feeling was evident. He is just beginning to realize how much he loves Lety and the previews show how connected he is to her. Lety is down on herself and Aldo should be just the cup of tea to help her regain some equilibrium. I'm going to enjoy this part 2 as we see a new Lety and Fernando begin to emerge. They both have growing up to do. Lety is minus her parents for the first time and has to learn to find her own two feet. Fernando does not have Conceptos to give him value - in his eyes. It's the perfect time for both of them to learn who they truly are.

Diann, take heart. I felt the same way at this stage of the story four years ago. Fortunately, it picked up again fairly quickly. Not as intense as the last couple of weeks have been, of course, but still interesting. Parts of it, anyway.

On the bright side, if you skip all the stuff that you don't care about, you'll have plenty of time to replay the older stuff that you liked!

Thanks Paula. Am watching thses right now. Just finished watching where Thomas was approaching the house and Ramon and gang started Harrassing him. I loved how Don Erasmo came out and put his arm around Thomas and scolded them and they all scattered.

Paula and recappers, thank you for your superb recaps of this week's heavy duty all important episodes....minus the cuartel, Irma and her deserter husband and some Tomas, Alicia and Solis home scenes. They were irritating filler but not as irritating as usual.

Jenn, I'll take Fern laughing or crying those same two tears. I think if Jaime Camil weren't playing Fern, I would not be as tempted to watch. I watch just for his lovely lips.

GinCA

Diann, I hope you stick around, for selfish reasons. I've really enjoyed your well-thought-out contributions to the board.

I won't dispute you. Some of your complaints certainly carry some weight. But for me those factors are balanced out by the things Fea does well.

First, in most TNs, characters have dramatic instant transformations. Fea characters transform gradually, step by step, and every step is distinct from the last and has a clear reason it happened. It's beautiful to behold.

Second, we won't see much more of Rafael. Don't worry - he doesn't become a permanent fixture.

Third, have you noticed? So far, the stages in Fea last ABOUT 30 episodes (give or take 10), which for us is three weeks. Stages: Lety was a nobody, then Filmo Imagen and the embargo, then the false romance, then the true romance, then Lety's revenge for the letter which pushed Fernando to recognize that he loves her, and now this stage. This stage will have its developments and things will be accomplished, and then everything will be in place for the next stage. Fea is not like MEPS where virtually nothing happened between Episode 10 and the finale. Nor like Tontas (blech!) where they repeated the same plot cycle over and over. Nor like FELS with its "she loves me, loves me not, loves me, loves me not" endless flip-flop.

Don't give up just yet. The Aldo thing might not go the way you fear. I realize that hint, “not as you fear,” could be interpreted several different ways, so I leave you knowing nothing more than when I started, which is exactly my intention! Bwa-ha-ha! I like your presence on the board and I hope you stay. As for the cuartel, ... all I can advise is, keep watching because tribulation worketh patience! (jaja)

When Lety was in the bus returning the Bellezas to the hotel, I think they started singing the song with the words, Club de las Bellas (not feas). Regardless, how mean...
Stephanie

Well, they are participating in a beauty pageant, so it doesn't seem wrong to me that they're singing a song about beauty.

And they may very well see Lety as just another ordinary person... they probably don't have an inkling of her 20+ years' worth of "fea" emotional baggage and wouldn't know that the song might hurt her feelings.

In the montage when Fern remembers how sweet Lety is, he includes scenes from before he fell in love with her, e.g. Megatron and her new look. Maybe it’s because he appreciated her sweetness before he fell in love, or maybe because he associates the false romance with her leaving.

Yes, Stephanie. Everything about that scene, and in fact most of the interactions with the bellas, seemed awkward and pointless. Did you notice? There are only 10 bellas, while there are 19 states in Mexico. Maybe they've already eliminated down to 10, or maybe they're hoping we can't count.

Jenn, thanks for the link to the hotel. Do you think that's their regular rate? Or do you think their rates are slashed because everyone's afraid to travel to Mexico right now?

Pata, agreed. It's so funny, feeble wheezing old Erasmo scaring the thugs. Even big, robust Fernando is afraid of RoboPop. Then again, he should be!

GinC, you're right. To me Fea is absolutely magical, and it's Camil who gives it the magic. The way he portrays emotions just carries me away. And as you can tell, we're going to see LOTS of emotions in the coming days.

I'm keeping a tally of the changes in Fernando. I know these are baby steps, but what do you expect? He's a big baby! I posted a few Wed. Here are a few more.

168 He totally disregards Omar’s opinion and advice.
168 Suddenly he gives priority to the investment he caused his family to lose. He swears to Pop, Ariel, and Marcia that he’ll earn it all back.
168 I think he honestly feels sorry for the pain he caused Marcia for the first time.
170 He recognizes, at least a little bit, the great harm he did. He tells PG, "No. I didn’t lose it. I’m the one who ruined everything. Not just the company, but also my parents’ confidence. And Lety. I destroyed her. It was my fault that she did things she shouldn’t have."

I'm curious about what will happen with Marcia "forgiving" Fern. If she tries to pressure her into marrying again - will he be strong enough to resist? He never actually directly ended things with Marcia - he got lucky in that she wanted to end it with him. I'll be watching this situation very closely... Especially since PG told Fern that a woman was willing to forgive him. He just doesn't realize that the woman was Marcia (at least that's how I choose to interpret it given the developments in today's eps).

Marcia is a sad case. I think it will kill her when she finds out that he truly loves Lety (if she ever finds out).

That moment with PG was both touching and unnerving. Fernando's reaction when he thought PG meant that Lety forgave him was magical. But the fact that Marcia's forgiveness was important enough to warrant PG's mentioning it makes me worry like Georgia Peach whether Fernando will be able to hold out when Marcia tries to win him back.

I agree with GinCA that it is Camil's acting that makes this TN shine. There is plenty of good acting and there are plenty of interesting characters but his expressive face is the thing that makes it magical.

Güera

I just posted a photo to the page. Thank you, Pata!

Paula,
I wont leave.
But this 3 week stage you speak of will feel like torture if I have to endure Angelica V. with Juan S.
Plus the fact that the story is away from DF & Fern is left with that awful cuartel, icky Marcia, and dumbo Omar.
I don't like the idea of Lety "growing up" without growing WITH Fern. They both need each other. Not some sappy fisherman/chef or some bimbette they may throw at poor Fern.
I still don't like what they did to the story, and no matter how pretty Acapulco is, its fantasyland.
I would much rather she grew strong by facing everyone and the two of them facing everyone together. Not just her running away. I know they have to follow the Colombian story, but they have taken liberties with the storyline before and this should have been one of those times.
Diann

I agree with all of you that say Camil is simply divine in this role even when he plays to stereotype with the two tears. He is magical and fun. BUT I also believe that he is that good because he has Vale to play off of who is equally magical if not more so even when though she overdoes the whining. I also think the whining is cultural not that Mexicans whine more than others but that it is typical to go through this period of "woe is me" instead of pulling a stiff lip. Would anyone on Masterpiece theater who has gone through what Lety has gone through whine. No they will have a stiff gin and tonic, pull a stiff upper lip and get on with things!
No matter how good and great Camil is he could not carry this telenovela but with Vale and several of the supporting cast they make him shine and bring out the best of him. He is that good because Vale is good and Alicia is good and even Robopop is funny.
At times when I too get frustrated with the storyline I remind myself it is a telenovela not oscar contending material where they have to follow a format and play to audience expectations. I know buzz kill!
Paula, I think the rates are winter rates. Another guilty pleasure of mine is watching TMZ and they noted that several top models are vacationing in Mexico so if the drug war is not keeping them away, Mexico must be safe.
I have recruited a cousin to go with me to Acapulco maybe this summer!
Enjoy your weekend y'all and thanks for the double pleasure of watching and reading your LFMB comments.
Jenn

Lety has had one HORRENDOUS day! That frightening nightmare was only last night. Someone on the 2006 board listed all the things she's been through today. Any ONE of them would make me want to go hide under the covers! After all that, I can't blame her for being pretty cranky.
1. Horrible nightmare the night before.
2. Plans to present fake balance and leave Conceptos.
3. Heard that Fernando was going to marry Marcia and exile her.
4. The horror of the meeting, plus seeing Fernando drawn and quartered.
5. The confrontation with Marcia.
6. Shred her hand to the point it's in a cast
7. Flying which scares her
8. Making the final break with the love of her life who betrayed her and can't stand her.
9. Flight fatigue and being out of DF and away from familyfor one of the few times in her life.
10. Being around all beautiful women which has always been uncomfortable for her.

Thanks to all of you for your fine efforts in keeping this novela alive to us!

I have the 16 hour DVD of La Fea and have watched it 3 times. So I just want to say, hang in there. Do not be discouraged or give up. Great things are to come our way.

I love this novela, even though I am familiar with the major plot lines.

GP, I think, when the dust settles, it will be impossible for Marcia NOT to realize that Fern loves Lety, and Marcia is her own evidence. When he stopped relations with her, she said things like, "la otra is robbing his heart from me," and "I think he doesn't even realize how much he loves her." If Marcia knows Fern fell in love with la otra, and Lety is la otra, the conclusion is obvious.

Güera, YES! When Fernando thought Lety forgave him, it was like the "Red Bull gives you wings" commercial! It is that intensity of emotion that makes Camil my favorite actor. He moves me, like a freight train passing a bicycle. And as for the expressive face, check this link. Seven distinct expressions in three seconds flat!

But Jenn, you're right. It's not the Jaime Camil show. There are some magical combinations - with Lety, with Alicia, with Luigi. Down the road, we'll see Fernando with Lety's mom - IMHO those are some of the best scenes of the series.

Diann, would you please e-mail me, paulah88@hotmail.com . I'd like to give you one tip about viewing, off-board.

Yes. yes, yes. I didn't mean to put down the rest of the actors. The entire ensemble is wonderful, starting with Vale, who also has some wonderful reactions and expressions. But the other characters are well played and well developed. I particularly am impressed by Alicia, Luigi, Marcia, Mama Julieta, Irmita... Tomás has shown a lot of versatility. I love him when he is being supportive of Lety. As for the cuartel, some of them are really fun to watch. I think I would enjoy them more if I understood the banter better. I suspect that they are comic relief that I just don't always catch. The only one who continues to annoy me is Don Erasmo. It's something personal -- his voice just grates on me.

Güera

Haha! Sr. Daisy Dukes, I love it!

I'm beginning to feel sorry for Marcia. Not only is the man of her dreams a bit of a nightmare but it seems like Alicia is her best friend.

Great screen shot. The single tear, it's a classic.

ALERT! If you have the 300-hour DVD set, disk #35 is messed up.
A. The caps are misnumbered.
B. For Monday's 2nd cap, #172, half the cap is missing. Be sure to record it from the broadcast.
C. I BELIEVE Cap 175 is missing entirely, so record that from the broadcast too. The caps are labeled 166-170, but it's really 171, half of 172, 173, *176*, and 174. Then the next disk starts with #176 again.

Paula,
I forgot to mention:
the two tears that go down Fern's cheeks?
that happens when you are wearing softlens contacts. The tears go straight down, not to the side.
Just a silly aside.
Diann

The things I learn on this blog...

Paula H - where can we buy the 300 hour dvd set - I've seen the reviews about the 3 dvd set on amazon, but nothing for the what sounds like nearly full 300 hours. I'd like to look into buying them if they are available. Or perhaps stream them (other than youtube).

Thanks!

PS - I agree that the actors are almost all fantastic (with the exception of a few). Guera - I totally agree with what you say about the Cuartel and not always understanding their banter. I'm sure I miss the majority of their jokes...but I still enjoy them collectively (I just hate it when they torment us with their individual story lines).

I can't wait for this whole thing to unfold!

Yes, GP, it's $165 from Te-lenovelas.com. I'm pleased with the quality and service. There are no subtitles nor CCs. It's the original music. Two avisos:
1. These are "unauthorized." I would never buy something pirated if it were available in an authorized version, but novelas are not. In fact, I also bought the condensed version to quiet my conscience.
2. Put some dinners in the freezer and tell your family they won't see you for awhile. I probably pulled at least four all-nighters in the month after I got my disk set. Oh, I had it bad!!!

The price may seem high, but you're just paying a little over 50 cents per cap. I certainly get my money's worth of enjoyment from them!

Muchas gracias!

FYI - I just placed my order - right now they have a 10% off special it ended up costing me a total of $148.50 and the standard US domestic shipping is free.

I don't think Lety's "whining" is excessive. She's in a totally new atmosphere and feels awkward; everything she does (trying to carry her own bags, etc.) is "wrong." She's expressed a lot of nervousness about that.

Her conscience is in disarray, so she's tried very hard to make sure Caro knows what's she's done so as not to betray her trust.

And she screwed up her last job REALLY badly, and got screwed over by some very pretty people in the process, so she's unsure of her ability to perform well in this job that involves pretty people.

I give her credit for not curling up into a ball. I think she's entitled to a little whining - at least for her first couple of days there.

So sad to see that Tomas has gone back to his old "look." Lety told him he could keep the clothes.

Even if he didn't want to wear them, he could have at least worn the new frameless glasses!

Ah well.

In Acapulco, does anyone think Alex is like a Bizarro Luigi? He has a similar job, but he's nice to Lety! No wonder she's disoriented!

To me, Alex seems like the director's brother-in-law who needed a job. He has no personality. He just shuffles around and tells the bellas they're guapa. Like, when Ha*Ash appeared, and you could tell these girls were singers, not actors.
