Abismo de pasión #156 10/29/12: A Tale of Two Parties
RECAP BY CATHYX
Damian welcomes wife #1 and Carito to the engagement party that Alfonsina is hosting. Flo and Alf glare at each other. Alf grabs her arm and pulls her aside, wanting to know how she could show her face in Casa Arango after what sheʼs done. Flo says she wouldnʼt miss seeing Damian having control over his own life again, and Alf fires back that he is only getting control because sheʼs letting him.
Alfonsina announces to the group that Damian and Elisa are to be married. Seated are Braulio, Lolita, Lucio, Doc Tovar, Enrique,Carito, and Florencia. Damian, cutting a very fine figure in his well fitted gray suit, and Elisa (who cares what sheʼs wearing) stand and he pulls out a new ring that doesnʼt yet have bad luck attached to it. He puts it on her finger saying that it represents the culmination of all his dreams heʼs had since he was a child. Just now, I see Paloma and Gael behind Damian. Did they just arrive? Not sure. As he talks about his life long love of Elisa, even the cold unfeeling botox queen gets choked up. Next to her, Paloma is doing the happy dance because her arch rival is finally going to be off the market and finally, finally, Gael will give up the notion of getting her back. (Not!)
Everybody claps when Dam is done, and now Gael (who invited him?) steps forward to speak. Oh no. He wants to know how she could accept Damian again. How did he convince her? Damian answers for her by shoving his tongue down Elisaʼs throat in front of the group. Ouch, Gael felt that one right in the kisser. (Pun intended) Everyone is looking and feeling very uncomfortable while Dam and Elisa go at it.
At the same time, Carmina is hosting her own private party in the blue house with her ghost demons. Sheʼs in bed unsuccessfully trying to sleep tossing and turning and hearing noises. She must go to bed early. Paolo Landucci arrives naked in her bed and asks if she remembers all the times they did the deed in that bed. She shouts youʼre dead, and when she finally looks, heʼs not there anymore. She goes to the closet and pulls out the rifle and gets back in bed. (Note to Carmina, guns donʼt work on ghosts).
Back at the engagement party, Alf toasts the happy couple. She says “A toast to your love and how it has overcome every obstacle I put in your way. And there were so many. Salud!”
Gael, not to be outdone, says “Amor? This is a farce. How can you let this happen? Paloma comes to the rescue trying to get him away, but he insists on wanting to know how Alfonsina could so suddenly turn her opinion around so drastically. Alf says she understands the confusion, but she has finally come to terms with Damʼs love for Elisa. And even though it pains her, she is willing to accept it. She admits doing everything to separate them but it only made them love each other more.
Gael is still trying to fight against it but Alf is holding strong. She says the last thing Lupe requested of her was that she forgive the past and let Dam and Elisa be together and sheʼs doing that now. So therefore, in front of everyone and Elisa, she is asking for her forgiveness. Elisa has the most incredulous look on her face. Alf is actually admitting that she hasnʼt been fair in hating Elisa. And, that she was wrong. WOW!
And then what happened? Well... in La Ermitaville they say, that Alfonsinaʼs small heart grew three sizes that day! They all proceed to the table and Alfonsina carves the roast beast.
Back to Carminaʼs ghost party in her bedroom, Ingrid arrives. Ingrid says that she sees that Carmina has lowered herself to hanging out with Gabino Mendoza. Ingrid chastises her for selling the house and loaning out the money to him, saying now look where you ended up, in this same bed where Gab and I did the sexy thang over and over and over. I miss Ingrid and her ringlets. She looks good as a ghost though. Carmina points the gun at her and Ingrid disappears.
At the wedding Party, Alf has another toast. She admits to being a prideful woman and that doing this toast is very hard for her. So in the name of her brother Guadalupe, who unfortunately canʼt be here, cheers to the happiness of Damian and Elisa. (Since weʼre talking about dead people so much, maybe Lupe is inhabiting Alfʼs body right now)
Elisa is still not buying the new and improved Alfonsina. She tells her that she doesnʼt trust her or believe her. That she canʼt expect to undo a lifetime of damage in one speech. No way, no how, and leaves the room. Gael thinks that itʼs his place to go after her but Paloma is quick on the draw and pulls him back. Lola then canʼt help herself and attempts to go after her niña, but Damian follows her out instead. He tries to make her feel better but she is just confused and doesnʼt know what to think. This took her by compete surprise. Dam is as surprised as she is and didnʼt expect it either. But the only thing that matters ultimately is that they are getting married. He tries to kiss her and she reminds him that their being together is only a business transaction. No kissy. She walks away knowing that it will be impossible to resist those sultry good looks and impossibly hard body for very much longer.
Alfonsina goes into her office crying. She canʼt believe that she canʼt just wipe away a lifetime of abuse in one toast. What is wrong with Elisa? Lucio follows her in and shuts the door. He tells her that she canʼt expect to wipe away a lifetime of abuse in one toast. But sheʼs changed, she insists. Donʼt I look believable? See? Real tears are falling down my face. He tells her to be patient. Elisa has a big heart and will forgive anyone for anything. Alf wants Lucio to help her win Elisa over. (Hmm, I just had a love connection thought. Alfonsina and Lucio? Or is that too asqueroso?) Alfonsina then swears to try to clear up the name of Estefania Bouvier. (Yes itʼs true, she actually said this.)
Gael informs Carmina that he doesʼt need any help. She wants the wedding to not happen because she hates Elisa, he wants it to stop because he loves her. Heʼs not aligning himself with her. Love will win out in the end. She reminds him that heʼs sitting in a bar drinking alone drowning away his miseries because everything is going just fine for him. She tells him not to worry, she will take care of everything and they will both like the outcome.
Lola is STILL fretting about Elisa, this time to Braulio. (Braulio, think about this, do you really want to take this on?) This time sheʼs worried that Gael will ride into the wedding on a black horse dressed in all black and do to Damian what Damian did to him. Except dressed in black of course because Gael is the bad guy. Paloma just needs to hand Gael the signed divorce papers right before the wedding starts. She continues with her worries about losing Estefaniaʼs wedding dress that Elisa dreamed of getting married in and Braulio just looks at her and shrugs.
Elisa walks out to the porch and spots a box on the table. She opens it and pulls out her motherʼs wedding veil. A note is left with it from Carmina that says if she wants the rest of the dress, she has to come and get it. She should have known that the lying liar lied about having the dress all along. Augusto didnʼt burn it after all.
Ramona makes the concoction and informs Chente that she will not do it again, and if he comes back for more, she will be better prepared to receive him, if you know what I mean. He leaves and Paloma is impressed by his compassion. Ramona tells her not to look up to him, he has a darkness to his soul. The apple didnʼt fall far from that tree. Thank goodness that it didnʼt happen with... With who? asks Paloma.
Ramona asks how Palʼs marriage is going. Pal is sure it will improve now that Elisa is marrying Damian. Pal, Pal, Pal, Iʼm convinced you will never learn. Ramona confesses that she feels very unsettled about the upcoming wedding, something bad will happen, she feels it in her bones.
Carmina has the wedding dress laid out on the bed. She is talking to Estefania saying that that day Stef wore this dress was the unhappiest day of Carminaʼs life. Stef took the man of her dreams from her. Blanca appears and says that if the day that Carmina got married and the day that she had her son with Augusto were so happy, why did she kill him? Carmina holds the dress up to her and says to Estefania that sheʼs going to kill her daughter with the dress. Hmm, strangulation? Elisa knocks at the door just then. Carmina enters the foyer to answer it and is attacked by the memories of when she fought with Augusto. The knocking continues, And Elisa wants to come in and get the dress. Elisa goes into the bedroom to get it. Why had Carmina lied about having it? She wanted to wear it when she was going to marry Gael. Donʼt ask those imploring questions, just be happy you have the dress now. Elisa should be thanking her for having it all this time.

Carminaʼs party continues in the foyer. Augusto arrives. He says sheʼs the same as her sister, but with less class. She falls back. Blanca is sitting in a chair, looking mighty fetching in white. Blanca asks if she remembers all the times that she went after her goddaughter with all the crapola? Blanca says God will never forgive all that she has done and Carmina responds that she doesnʼt believe in God and tells Blanca to go to Hell. Blanca says she will be the one who is going to Hell and Carmina says she doesnʼt believe in hell either. She asks Blanca what sheʼs doing there and tells her to leave her in peace.
Ingrid shows up again saying Hell does exist and sheʼs waiting for Carmina to arrive.
Next, the ghost of Gabino comes in. Oh wait, heʼs not a ghost because heʼs not dead yet. Heʼs holding his bullet head and searches for and finds some pain killers. Carmina grabs the pills and kicks him out and says if he wants to come back, he better have all her money he took with him.
Days later, Lola is once again fretting about her niña. (Sorry Lola, I love you to death but you are getting on my very last nerve with your obsessive worry for Elisa). Elisa hasnʼt come out of her room for 3 days or eaten anything. (Thatʼs because she wants to fit into her too small wedding dress, Iʼm sure. Weʼve all been there.) Lucio mentions that in the afternoon, sheʼs going to have to come out of her room to get her wedding dress. Lola worries that sheʼs planning on not showing up for the wedding, but has no proof that that is what Elisa is planning.
Lucio goes in to talk to her. Elisa has cold feet and isnʼt sure sheʼs doing the right thing. Dam still believes she slept with Gael, and sheʼs been too sick of the subject to clear it up. And Damian has twice said that she is the most important person in his life, and both times she found him naked with another. Then Elisa puts on her signature pouty face. Elisa confesses that sheʼs afraid, all her dreams end up as nightmares. No kidding.
Little Gabino (His son, not the other one) is visiting Big Gabino at the hotel room heʼs staying in. Chente hands him the sedatives he has leftover from his kidney transplant. Gabino curses the witch for not giving him her herbal remedies, itʼs the only thing that takes the pain away. Gabino shoots the drug into his arm and goes to sleep on the bed. Chente opens a drawer and pulls out a gun and leaves.
Gael is in the cantina tying one on and Carmina arrives and joins him. Sheʼs curious what his plan for the wedding is after what Dam did to his. Carmina tells him that if he wants to stop the wedding, he can count on her to help. Will Gael cross over to the dark side?
Ramona is at her cabana doing her herbal stuff, when Chente shows up. He pulls the gun on her and tells her to give him the herbs that will help dear papa. No way, she says. She is not going to help that very bad, no good, loser. Chente defends him saying that heʼs all Chenteʼs got. He says to give him the herbs, or he shoots. She tells him to shoot. Either way he wonʼt get it. Sheʼs not afraid to die, sheʼs lived a long life and sheʼs prepared to leave it. Do it. Just then Paloma comes in and asks him to put the gun down. Stef would have wanted her to get married in the dress, and sheʼs doing if for Stef. She knows itʼs hard to believe, but Carmina really did love her sister. So go ahead and put the dress on, Carmina will not stop her anymore. So once again, just like Charlie Brown never learns that Lucy takes the football away every time he goes to kick it, Elisa gets all excited and closes the door to try on the dress.

Cathy, this is just hilarious! I especially loved your homage to Dr. Seuss ("in La Ermitaville they say, that Alfonsinaʼs small heart grew three sizes that day!") and your Charlie Brown ending. Yes, poor Elisa. When it comes to Carmina, she still hasn't learned.

I for one was really impressed with a good episode last night, sort of made me feel like i was watching another version of 'ghosts of crimes past' (i had just recently seen the 'girlfriends of xmas past' with Mathew McC and Jen Garner). it was very entertaining to see most of the members of the Table of the ones already gone parade around Carmina's bed...

The dress that won't burn out... well, i can see Carmina wanting to make a huge final impression by waiting until Elisa wears it to make her move (eh... shooting?)... it sounds promising entertainment wise...
Gael tempted to go to the dark side? i think he has been there or at least on the fence for many episodes now... and his interference in the engagement party last night shows him leaning toward the dark side... definitely i see the Arango blood needed again, maybe the same way maybe the reverse direction (Dam saving Gael after he steps in the way of the bullet for Elisa or even for Dam himself?)

Cathy, what a super recap. It really made my morning. I had the best time enjoying my tea and laughing over your wisecracks. I really thought that Ramona was going to spill the secret of Chente and Paloma being siblings when he pulled that gun on Pal. Something like, "You can't shoot her because she's your SISTER!!" But nope. That lady sure knows how to hang on to a secret to the bitter end.

I had no power so couldn't watch last night. Once I get done doing a few things for work ( home, but working. Office is closed) I have to catch this. This hysterical recap now has me wanting to see all the antics, stupid thought they are.

Diana...Right! At this point, if Gael did an about-face, had an epiphany or whatever and swore his eternal love to Paloma any normal woman would KNOW she was sloppy seconds and tell him to get lost. But then again Paloma is not normal.

Marta, I agree about the life or death moment needed to make Gael turnaround. He must be feeling pretty lost right now with PaPadre gone. I know Paloma is trying to help but she's way too smothery. People need their own space, ESPECIALLY people who live together.

I'm glad everyone enjoyed the recap. All I could think of when botox queen smiled at the party and was repentant, was the grinch and how much she looked like him when he smiled.
I don't know if anyone noticed, but in that scene when Augusto came back Carmina had curly hair, but she had straight hair right before it and right after it. So they obviously used an old clip for that. I know because I couldn't understand what he was saying so I went back to the archives to see if what he said was in a former recap. Darn mumblers!

Yes they did use an old clip of Augie's grand entrance into the blue house... this was either right before or right after he and Ramona talked after he got the hint that Carmina's baby was not his... before he reconciled with Elisa.

EJ, the fun thing is that they are all kids' books, except for the Agatha Christie. And of the kids' books, all but Allende's are basically picture books (though the Allende is illustrated as well).
