Que pobres tan ricos Tuesday 8/5 (#150) - we find out Rita's secret.
Alejo sort of promises Mati he'll get his lawyer right on that divorce thing, but that he wants to be with his son. Mati says she will allow him to try to convince Lupe (this seemed very bogus to me).
As somebody guessed, when Minerva does the big reveal of the next magazine cover, the model is her own mother! The grandsons share a united moment of flabbergasted astonishment. All say it's a risky idea but she's confident it will be a big hit. Mati likes it so MA gets on board.
Mati has an announcement: she doesn't think Alejo's abilities are being put to their best use in his position as vice president so from now on he's [demoted to] head of marketing. He is flabbergasted again. Not in a good way. The harpies come to gloat, he makes the usual threats, they gloat some more about how they are going to be so famous (I guess because of the new magazine cover).
Fri comes to the Nopalera, ostensibly to tell Lupita how sad Mike is without her (and how he was innocent of any wrongdoing with Minerva) but actually to try to talk to Tizoc, who isn't home. She asks Lupita about the troubles she's had as a single parent. "It's been hard, but I was never completely alone, my family helped me." Fri says she admires Lupe and asks for a hug. Poor girl.
Rita thanks Wendy for sticking up for her with Nepo. Wendy reassures her: "Diego wants to see you and he deserves an explanation." After a lot of incomprehensible advice from Wendy, the two of them visit the Banana King and Prince at dinner time. While Wendy goes in the kitchen to cook, Rita explains: I left because I was confused. I didn't go with a man, I went with a woman. I married your dad when we were both young, I got pregnant..." "To entrap me!" says Nepo. "Shut up!" says Diego, who is rapidly growing a backbone. Turns out Rita's girlfriend died and she decided she had to try to find her son Diego (whom she had wanted to name Lalito).
The fonda is open again. When Tizoc gets home Lupita says, too bad, you missed Fri. And by the way, you are a jerk now and you don't help around here any more. He turns to a customer and reads off the whole menu, which is actually just one dish. Cameo: the guy is Bobby Pulido, a Tejano singing star.
Dinner at RP, they are all at the table together (eating prole food as served in the Nopalera, but off silver platters). Nothing important happens. AS spouts off about their need to find friends (and future spouses) of their own rarefied social class.
Carmela asks Lupe why she's so quiet and reassures her: "Don't worry, we'll catch those vandals." "It wasn't vandals, it was Alejo." Shocked, Carm says "Denounce him," but Lupe's afraid to - and also she can't bear to upset Emiliano that way.
Carm says, I know there must be something else bothering you. Lupita says she went to an oncologist and he found a lump in her breast. She's going to get it "taken care of" and hopes it is not be malignant like the breast tumor that killed her own mother. PSA for going and getting regular breast exams and dealing with any problem right away. Lupita tells Carm she doesn't want anybody to know, it would frighten them.
Charly, Alejo's stooge and Tizoc's manager, is giving more bossy advice. Tizoc wants to sing at his neighborhood fair and Charly says no. Tizoc gets mad and - quits! Charly reminds him he's millions of pesos in the hole. Tizoc says, "Next! Bye!" In the street he sees a poster of Tay and scribbles a moustache on it.
Leo, in a bar with his crappy rich friends, misunderstanding their sly references to the Gay Pride Parade in NYC, comes out to them. He looks happy but they look away.
Fri tells Mati "I tried to find Tizoc but I couldn't." Mati says she'll continue to keep Frida's secret but that Tizoc has a right to know.
Mike reveals to Minerva that all those properties Alejo supposedly signed over to her belong to the corporation, she actually got nothing. She is incensed. She tells her mother and they rage together. "Where will we live? I know, Daddy's penthouse!" But it turns out Isela sold the penthouse long ago. Minerva says, but that was my inheritance. Isela says, but it's me who had to put up with that crappy lover, not you. Minerva doesn't want to hear this. "Well, what did you do with the money?" "I bought a lot of chuchulucos" When I looked that up turns out they are pretty much what in Yiddish we call tshotshkes - little baubles and trinkets. "You can't have spent ALL the money on stupid junk." "Well, I gave the rest to the rich-bored-ladies foundation."
Fri calls Tizoc, they meet, she can't tell him yet again. She runs away.
Mati gives Alejo the same lecture as earlier. He smiles to her face but behind her back says "How I hate that decrepit old woman." I hope he doesn't push her down the stairs. He calls Charly and hears about Tay's rebellion. He smiles an evil smile and says he always gets the last laugh.
Mati and Alejo have the same conversation again - "You need to give Lupe the divorce." "Yes but I need my son."
Lupe tries to persuade Tizoc his quitting is a big problem and he has to start growing up and dealing with his own life. He has a rare affectionate moment, hugs her and tells her he loves her.
Uncomfortable conversation between Lupita and Alejo - the same one they always have, about how she wants a divorce and he doesn't. Emi runs off to wait for his dad and a messenger comes in with a red rose in a box for Lupita. She smiles (evidently before I started watching this show MA gave her a rose or two). Alejo is jealous. She tells him she wants sole custody.
We end with Frida at an abortion clinic, alone.
Tomorrow: No hints, just some shots from tonight!

They surely can't have enough time to make Lupita's tumor malignant, right? Well, at least now we know why she hasn't been herself lately. She been so worried about possibly ending up like her mom. In addition to the Alejo, MA, and Emi drama, that's enough to account for the dizzy spells. Stress and worry.
Thanks so much, Jan.
Thanks so much for this very splendid recap after a day of loading and unloading hay!
The drunk, unfaithful person Isela was referring to was her dead hubby. He was in Politics and chased skirts.
Oh, Vivi, you nailed it with Rita. That was one thing I didn't think was going to happen. I am glad Deigo is listening to her side of the story, and I was yelling at the TV to tell Nepo ot shut up, as probably all of us were. I am so glad Guendy set this up.
Ahole needs that anvil already. I had to laugh at Ahole bein demoted good deal! I too was worried about Mati being alone with him. Mati pressing this divorce, Ahole will never listen.
Now Ahole has another ace in the hole with Tizoc breaking his contract, but I loved how he did it. I laughed when he drew a mustache on his picture.
So Isela sold the Penthouse. And Mini now knows she should have read those divorce papers, but then again, how was she to know these properties were in the corporatation's name. Maybe now Mini will spill all she knows to MA.
I really hope that Lupe is okay, and it's begnin tumor. I also liked MA sending her that rose. So sweet.
Poor Frida, nobody with her. And she still didn't tell Tizoc. I did like how she asked Lupe all the questions about being a single mother. Will she really go through this? I can't wait for tomorrow to find out.
Vivi, great call on Rita. I was so happy that Diego insisted on sidelining big mouth Nepo so Rita could tell her story.
What a bad day for Minerva (Isela not so bad with her face on the cover) finding out Alejo gave her nothing in the divorce and Isela long ago sold the penthouse and frittered away the money. Could actual "work" be in their future or just some rich husbands?
So now there will be the Lupita biopsy. They didn't have to add more drama to this comedy with this obnoxious subplot. I wonder why they feel a need for psa's. So obvious, so extraneous.
I loved: Alejo now being head of marketing; Alejo playing with his stress balls; doña Mati being at her best as businesswoman and grandma; MA sending the rose everyday.
So sad for Frida all alone at an abortion clinic.
Jarifa
Vivi, you were right and your theory on the actress and roles is very interesting...
Some more details...
Dinner at RPs'... I loved and giggled at how AS kept on going making comments that they now had NO connection to the Menchacas... and Frida and Mati kept looking at each other and Frida kept choking on her food every time AS made the comment. MA was looking at them but i doubt he got any clue that there was a reason for their being so entertained at AS's comments.
Lupe/Carm convo... They were noting that this is why Lupe's mom died... but Carm kept coaching her that 'that was then, this is now' and if caught early, even if malignant, Lupe has plenty of chance to get through it, thus the need for frequent self-testing and scheduled tests.
The rose... what a detail from MA!! LOVED how Lupe recognized who it came from and poked A-hole's ego with making him 'guess who?'.
ANd then MA and Saul at juice-bidness offices... Saul brought up the fact that now that MA could afford filling the room wirh roses, MA chose to send only one... and MA explained that he wanted Lupe to feel like nothing ahs changed between them, that when he was poor he gave Lupe only one rose and told Lupe that one was all he could afford, to which she responded that the gesture is what counts... so now sending her a single rose every day will mean more to her than sending her a ton of them...
And at the very end... Frida is at a doctor's office and the nurse just came out to get her to come in for her 'scheduled pregnancy termination' appointment (did I hear that right?)... so Frida is going against Mati's advice to tell Tizoc and get them to decide on it TOGETHER...
Yes, that's what the nurse said and the nurse also asked Frida if she was of age and that this was a legal termination. This is so sad. I still wonder if Frida will actually go through with it, because something hit home with Frida when she was talking to Lupe. I thought Lupe would suspect something, but she didn't.
In a way i'm kind of sorry about Rita because I thought she might be the girl for Saul. I will say Nepo looked absolutely stunned when she said she ran off with a woman.
I wonder why we have to get the heavy PSA about breast concer in what is supposed to be a comedy. They seem to always do that.
I'm seriously annoyed with Lupe however because once again she is leaving her family out of the equation. If you ever need family around you it is with this kind of thing but there she goes, like the Ahole mess, she is going to turn all plucky and go it alone. If i were Chuy and the rest I'd be seriously pithed when the truth comes out.
Frieda is also doing the same thing. Since this is a comdely my bet is she will not go through with it but she really is in a mess with an apparently uncaing mother and a dolt for her baby's father.
Laughed my head off when the tarantulas discovered they had no property from the divorce. Ahole pulled a fast one on thm and yet agoin we have a character who is too stupid to read legal papers before signing them.
On a related topic, does anyone know of a character that has ever gone through with having an abortion in a Mexican telenovela? If so, how was it framed?
Just curious.
Jarifa
And how clever of you to have figured out the secret, Vivi! Well done!
Frida is not a minor. We know from previous conversations that she is 18 and legally an adult.
I wonder what will happen to Tizoc now that he walked away from the music contract. I mean, what happens if they sue him? He doesn't have any money.
About the scene with Minerva having her mother in the cover of the magazine, I think the only one who liked it was one of the zombies. MA and Mati were not in agreement because the magazine is directed towards a younger demographic. While Perla's cover was a good choice because she represented their readers better, the Isela cover would not be of interest for them. But I can't remember well why the board ended up having to accept Mini's cover in the end.
By the way Vivi, I was quite impressed that you figured out Rita's storyline and your reasons about the actress make so much sense.
Jarifa:
There was an abortion in La Fuerza del Destino. Leticia Calderón's character had a back alley abortion and she died as a result.
Jarocha
he didn't read it, so who knows what he actually signed... beyond the music representation deal.
It seems this comedy might be able to deal with an abortion in someone's past, but not right now! We'll see... Hmmm, imagining Tio Leo makes me smile.
The reason those lovable Zombie's liked the cover of Perla was because it was fresh and new, not the same old, same old, Ahole had been putting on the cover. I do love those Zombies, they have been disagreeing with Ahole this whole time. I think if Mini would stop distracting herself, she could actually be good at this job.
fishknits:
I would love to see Tio Leo how fab would that be? The bebe's first words would be Mamauki. Can you imagine? Too funny.

So Nepo didn't know that Rita is was gay, so that couldn't be the reason he is so against Diego being gay.
My prediction with Frida is that she either ends up leaving the abortion clinic without an abortion, or Tizoc finds out just in time and stops her.
MA will now be able to get Minnie's help with finding more evidence against Alejo now that Alejo left her with nothing. The notebook? I know Vilma has it, but another search of her apartment might reveal it.
I hadn't thought of Tio Leo but agree he would be great with kids. He got a bit of a shock when he "came out' to his friends and they reacted so negatively. I suspect it reinforces his wish to go to New York where it is no big deal. Somehow I can't see leo as a crusader for gay rights - Diego maybe but not Leo.
Finding out that her daughter is pregnant and didn't tell anyone (except Mati), went to get an abortion and felt so isolated from her family she kept quiet might wake her up to what a terrible mother she has been.
Diego and his mother were great together. Now Nepo can decide for himself how much longer he wants to make himself miserable over other people's private business.
I agree, Mati letting Ahole "try to convince" Lupe sounded like BS to me. She shouldn't let him use such an obvious delaying tactic. Let the lawyers negotiate that.
I also think it's BS that Ahole can get away with putting property that doesn't belong to him in Mini's divorce settlement. I don't know the law in Mexico (or in the US for that matter) but that sounds like fraud at best. And why didn't her lawyer catch this?
Ahole has hidden most of his assets, so if Mini sues him she probably can't get anything anyway.
Likewise, the record company can sue "Tay" for everything he has, because he doesn't have anything. Recoupment, hell, they never paid him a nickel in the first place. Recoupment gets paid later, but in the meantime the record company is supposed to be paying him. If they haven't paid him yet then THEY are the ones in the wrong and it's reasonable for him to quit.
(I am not a lawyer)
Regarding the cover, I think Mati said something like it was risky but they'll see if it does well. (Isela will probably use all of her remaining funds to buy as many copies as she can.)
I'm not saying she shouldn't still tell him, but I can understand why she hasn't. It would feel like asking a little kid for investment advice.
As for abortion in TNs, there was an ectopic pregnancy in Una Familia con Suerte. She really wanted a baby, but the pregnancy wasn't viable, so they terminated it. It was sad, but I was glad that they didn't make a horror show of it.
(That was an Osorio show, so it's not as though I think he's COMPLETELY awful.)
" It would feel like asking a little kid for investment advice." Well said. Hard to tell what Tizoc would do. He might freak out, or he might think it's super chido. But it's hard to imagine him stepping up as a responsible father, taking on the work of baby care and getting a paying job to support the child at the expense of his "music career".
But that's over and done. Now, I wouldn't mind seeing her and Isela with a shabby little stall in the marketplace, selling those frivolous past purchases for centavos on the peso to pay for the rent on a little cinderblock hut and street tacos for dinner.
Isela has made it clear that she thinks marriage is the best way for a woman to make a living. I don't know why SHE doesn't remarry, instead of expecting unreliable Mini to carry her all this time.
If Minerva really wants to knock it out of the park, she should put Lupita on the cover! Everyone seems to love her!
"We end with Frida at an abortion clinic, alone."
Yikes!
I'm glad the donkeys are getting fed.
Good call, Vivi. I'm impressed but not surprised.
Cristal (Maria Elisa Camargo) had an abortion in Llena de Amor and almost bled to death ending up sterile as a result. Even though she was something of a naughty mean girl, it was very sad.
