Lo Imperdonable #8 Wed 5/27/15 “Hearts Run the Gamut Once Again – from Aggressive Dueling to First Tender Kiss”

(Some scenes are combined)

Back to Martin and Vero engaged in a fencing duel with real swords and no faceguards.  He promptly overpowers her, knocks the sword out of her hand, and holds the tip of his own sword to her neck, thinking to himself he could just end her life right there and then.  As Vero stumbles and falls, he moves closer, with the tip of his sword still hovering over her neck.  Any normal person would see the insane look in his eyes and get the hell away from him…forever.  But not Vero, that’s not her style.  If anything, her love for him just grew ten-fold, because he didn’t pull any punches and “opened her eyes” about the limits of her strength, unlike the rest of her male fencing opponents.

Magdalena, alone with her memories, mumbles to her lost daughter that she will never forgive herself for abandoning her.  NanC arrives to deliver some fruits.  Magdalena wishes she could cure her aching soul with NanC’s herbs, but knows they only cure physical maladies and that her pain will only be cured when she finds her daughter.  She wishes NanC could foresee her future, but all NanC can see is more tears in her life.

As an apology for his crazy behavior, Martin invites all the gang out for drinks that evening.  Vero readily accepts, but only if it’s to toast his victory.  Cunning Virginia plays matchmaker and tells Martin he only has to apologize to Vero, so he should just take Vero out.  Meanwhile, Emi is still fuming about Martin’s ungentlemanly behavior, so Vero tells him to just calm down and get over it.  (Translation - she is a grown woman and doesn’t need Emi-niño watching her back.)….Later, Emi gets a chance to confront Martin and warns Martin he will have to answer to him if he ever dares to hurt Vero….Martin thinks some women pretend to be weaker than they really are.  Emi has no doubt that Vero is strong, and with a firm character, but a woman nonetheless.  Martin acknowledges he got carried away but does not want to ruin his friendship with Emi.  Emi makes it clear that Martin ruined it when he came between him and Vero, the woman he loves.  Now Emi doubts they can ever be friends again, but Martin convinces him they should just follow the rules, like in fencing, and may the best man win with Vero.  (Emi, dude, don’t even waste your time.  You already lost the battle and the war.)

Botel is at the local dive, completely drunk and loose-tongued, moaning to himself because he fears that Magdalena (his “Malena”) will leave him when she goes off looking for “her”.  Manuel comes over to Botel’s table and without much prompting gets Botel to spill his wife’s secrets.  He tells Manuel he stole Malena from her husband but left behind her daughter, and while he is sure Malena loves him, he also knows she will never forgive him for separating her from her daughter…..Botel returns home drunk and Malena reproaches him for “behaving like him”.  He won’t take that comparison, reminding her that he truly loves her and gave up everything for her.  In that condition, she doesn’t want him, no matter how much gold he has.  She grabs all his half-used bottles of hard liquor and pours them down the toilet.

Blanquita and Ana Perla are raving about the latest book they borrowed from Monsieur Dussage, but lament the fact that he is the closest thing to a Count they have near them.  Little Polo decides he’d rather go off and play with Onyx than listen to them talk about their books and corny stuff (“cursilerias”).  Ana Perla sighs and says she is not likely to find her prince there, but Blanquita warns her she better hurry up and find him, so she doesn’t end up like the fairytale princesses whose husband is chosen by the King.  Ana Perla yearns for a “handsome, fun and free” prince.  Of course, we next see Pablo (handsome and fun, but hardly free) in his studio chatting with Mariana and Virginia about the “passion” he saw in Vero and Martin’s duel.  What Virginia saw was “aggressiveness” not passion, and she is sure that those two are exactly the same, made for each other.

Salma and Mariana’s mom are soaking in the sun on their well-preserved, botoxed faces.  Mariana’s mom is raving about Salma’s party because it was there that her daughter finally got engaged.  (Never mind that there was no ring and no real proposal.)  Salma, meanwhile, continues to complain about Vero coming between her niño and Virginia….She complains that when it comes to Vero, she cannot get her way with Jorge, because Jorge does want Emi to marry her.  Good thing Vero has a thing for Martin, so they can get married soon and leave Emi all free for Virginia.  (Who cares what her son wants; it’s what Salma wants that matters.)

Emi is back home and drinking away his sorrows.  Jorge encourages him to not lose faith, conquering a woman like Vero takes time.  Emi knows better.  “All it took was one look from Martin for her to allow him to get closer to her.  I don’t know what she sees in him.”  (Well, for one, Emi – she sees someone who looks his age, not 20 years older like you.)  Jorge promises that he will speak with Vero and convince her that Martin is not up to her standards….Emi is still fuming that instead of getting mad at Martin, Vero congratulated him for his triumph.

And just then, Vero is telling her nana, with a twinkle in her eyes and a dimpled smile:  “After today, I have no doubt that Martin is a beast….but an adorable beast.”  She admits that she really has high hopes about him, and she wants to look her best when he picks her up that evening.  Nana is still worried about Emi, but Vero rightly tells her she is not going to give up her happiness just to make him happy.  (Well, what a relief.  How many telenovelas have we seen where that’s exactly what the heroine does?)  Vero is now absolutely sure that she will be very happy with Martin.

Martin is once again whining to poor Alfredo (who at this point should demand a raise for having to also serve as his therapist, besides running the construction for him).  He can’t understand why Vero is precisely the woman on whom he must exact revenge.  Poor Alfredo wastes his time once again suggesting that Martin can still forget about his vows of vengeance.  “Never!!!” Martin assures him.  “Deep down you don’t want to hurt her,” Alfredo suggests, “because you are falling in love with her.”  “Never!!!” repeats Martin.  “It won’t be so easy for her to entangle me.  She destroyed Demetrio because he was weak.”  (What a nice thing to say about your dear dead brother, Martin.)  He swears he HATES Vero, but Alfredo ain’t buying what Martin is selling, and once again warns his friend that he will only end up hurting himself.

Pablo tells Mariana how odd it was for Virginia to suggest that Martin and Vero should join them on their trip to the jungle.  Mariana thinks Virginia is just trying to help Vero because she knows how much Vero likes Martin.  It’s obvious to Pablo (and to the rest of us) that Martin and Vero like each other, but not a good idea for them to butt into it.  Mariana agrees and suggests it’s best if they focus on each other.  And what better way than by making out….The make-out session quickly moves from the sofa to their bed.

Botel continues to swear to his Malena that he loves her.  If you did, you would not behave that way, she tells him.  He knows that’s what she escaped from, and seeing him in that state reminds her of it all.  She refuses to continue living that way.  She needs to get away from him, at least until drunkenness wears out, so she heads out to the church to pray for her suffering to end.

Jorge advises Emi to learn to control his jealousy.  After all, he is partly responsible for what happened because he opened the doors of their home to Martin without knowing anything about him.  Emi angrily tells Jorge that he did the same thing for Demetrio Silveira.  He promptly apologizes and says he is just angry because Martin is an imbecile and Vero applauds him for it instead of despising him.

As Vero is preparing for her big night out with Martin, Jorge stops by to express his concern.  He heard her fencing bout could have ended in tragedy if Emi hadn’t stopped the combat.  (Really, is that what happened?  That’s not how I remember it.)  Jorge repeats what he told Emi, that he does not like Martin.  “Well, you shouldn’t judge him at first sight, uncle.”  (Oh, yes he should.)  She is sure he is a good man, hardworking, sincere, and she wants to get to know him better.  Jorge doesn’t get how she can choose to waste her time with that kind of man while Emi is dying of love for her.  She simply sighs, and as he walks out, she practically rolls her eyes.  (I don’t blame her.  Martin vs. Emi?  No contest.  They are both crazy and crazy about her, but at least Martin is a self-made man, and not an overgrown daddy’s boy.  Sure, he fantasizes about killing her too, but she doesn’t know that.)

Virginia is filling in Salma on the day’s events and repeats her assessment that Martin is as impulsive and aggressive as Vero is, and they are made for each other.  Salma is going to do all she can to bring Martin and Vero closer together, so she can be rid of her.  But she tells Virginia she has to do her part too, working on her charms so she can win over Emi.  And, oh by the way, Salma springs on Virginia the news that she made her an appointment with a certain Dr. Del Rio, a renowned cardiologist.  Virginia reminds her she already has a doctor, Dr. Fernandez, in whom she trusts completely.  All Salma wants is a second opinion, because it’s important that Virginia be cured if she wants her son Emi.  Virginia doesn’t appear too pleased about getting such a second opinion.  (Uhm, I wonder why?)

Blanquita and Ana Perla are still talking about their books.  (What else could they possibly talk about if they are living in the middle of nowhere?)  They talk about Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz, a famous writer who was a nun but had access to numerous books.  Ana Perla sighs and wishes she had vocation to be a nun, but that’s not possible because she dreams too much about love.

Mariana arrives at Pablo’s apartment so they can head to the airport together.  She scolds him when she realizes that he has yet to pack, then reminds him that HE was the one who insisted on leaving early.  They haven’t even walked out the door, and she is already complaining loudly about each progressively more treacherous and uncomfortable leg of their upcoming trip.  How dare he forget all about it because he got too busy painting?  (Uh, hello, inspiration has no schedule, Marianita, and you are the one pushing him to crank out those paintings and earn the big bucks pronto, remember?)  Well, it’s no wonder that all Pablo can say to her is that he is sure “over there” he will find what he truly wants (and it ain’t you, girlfriend).

As if it were possible, Manuel reaches a new low by warning Polo to control Onyx and threatening to kill his dog if he keeps barking at night and interrupting his sleep.  Then he pulls out a cigarette and offers it to Polo.  Polo knows better, but Manuel keeps insisting he try it, because it’s what “real men” do.  Fortunately, Ana Perla shows up and threatens to tell their abuelo if Manuel keeps offering such nasty things to Polo.  Manuel threatens to convince abuelo to marry her off soon, and he will personally choose her husband for her, but a nice tame one who won’t threaten to take abuelo’s mine away from him.

At the church, Malena prays for forgiveness and hopes that her daughter is not suffering as she is.  She only asks that her daughter find love next to a man who will value her and respect her, and love her for who she is.

Veronica walks down the stairs to her living room, where Martin awaits her with a large bouquet of red roses.  He kisses her hand and apologizes for the fencing incident that morning.  With a nervous smile, he tells her that he didn’t know very well how to apologize to a woman like her, so he brought her the roses.  “A woman like me?  What makes you think I don’t like these kinds of attentions (“detalles”)?”  “Well, I just mean that you are a different kind of woman, that you are not precisely a princess,” he says in a strangely nervous way.  She smiles and asks if she is supposed to feel flattered by what he just said.  “Don’t misunderstand me.  I’m trying to say that you are a strong woman, independent, with character.  An amazona, and perhaps hard to please.”  (Nope, not so hard to please.  In fact, Vero is looking quite pleased at that very moment, staring at him with lovey-dovey eyes.)  She tells him he is mistaken.  She is much simpler than she appears, and if she is strong it’s because “circumstances” made her that way.  “But I have an enormous need to feel protected, and loved.”  He asks if no one has ever loved her.  She laughs and says some have approached her.  “But once they get to know me, they end up running away.”  But “someone” must have stuck around, someone must have promised her something.  She can tell now that he is probing, but just flashes a big smile and says that a certain someone promised to insist, but she has not heard back from him yet.  “Haven’t you ever been curious to know of him, of his life?”  “No, and from what you just told me it’s clear to me that men either think I’m unreachable or are afraid of an independent woman.”  They both flash big, nervous smiles like teenagers going out on a first date.  He gets closer to her and tells her that unlike all those other men he thinks that is what is most attractive about her.  She asks if he is serious.  “So serious…..Every time I get close to you, all I want to do is to kiss you.”  He slowly moves in for the kiss….a little too slow….(Martin, you snooze, you lose)…..and of course they are rudely interrupted by uncle Jorge, who reproaches Martin for visiting his beloved niece without his consent.  Since she wasn’t born in the 19th century, Vero reminds her uncle that Martin has “her consent”.  Jorge demands to know what Martin’s intentions are towards Vero.  Martin assures him that they are the best of intentions.  “I would marry Veronica at this very moment if she would accept me.” Veronica smiles, clearly liking the idea, but says nothing.

Jorge lectures Martin on the prerequisites of marriage, like equality of condition, education, etc., and from the way he treated his niece during their fencing bout, Jorge can tell Martin has no clue about good manners, and the fact that Martin is already talking about marriage only increases Jorge’s unease with him.  He walks off furious, and Vero and Martin just stand there, smiling and staring at each other….Back in his bedroom Jorge is still fuming, but Salma is doing her best to play up Martin’s good qualities.  She is also happy to hear that Veronica rejected their son.

Virginia is on the phone with a certain “someone”, telling him she needs to see him urgently.  She will give him details when he comes to see her tomorrow.

Martin and Veronica arrive at restaurant with lovely lush greens.  He tells her he hopes that she will like it.  She says she loves it.  She adores flowers and green areas.  “Contact with nature makes me very happy.”  He laughs and says that must just be nature in a well-manicured garden.  (What an ass!!!)  He doesn’t think she would last long in the jungle and would end up hating it.  Vero assures him that she would love to go and it’s only because of work that she didn’t join Pablo and Mariana on their trip.  He laughs and says she wouldn’t last there a single day.  “You are wrong.  For a good reason, I would be capable of putting up with everything/anything….It doesn’t scare me.”  For her husband, she would go anywhere.  (Notice she said husband, not boyfriend, so he’ll definitely have to put a ring on it.)  She wonders if he doubts her word.  No, I’m sure you have enough self-esteem (“amor propio”) to be true to your word.”  “Only self-esteem?  No, Martin, I would not do that for amor propio, but for amor.  Period.”  He gets nervous and tells her that she drives him crazy, she fascinates him, to the point that he forgets about himself.  She grins from ear to ear.  “I feel the same thing for you….And you know what they call that?  They call it LOVE.”  “Love?” he repeats nervously.  “Yeeesss…..,” she grins again.  “I think that you are in love.  And you have no escape.”

Salma goes to tell Virginia that Emi already declared his love to Vero.  Before she can say anything else, Virginia throws herself on her bed and starts crying.  Salma tells her to calm down.  For once she is happy with Vero’s actions, because Vero turned down her son, even if she hurt him.  Emi is in the study licking his wounds, and Salma thinks this is the perfect time for Virginia to pounce on him and console him…..Back in the study, Emi is reviewing something on his computer, wondering out loud what else Demetrio Silveira was, besides being their company’s administrator.  He looks online for information on Martin and reads out loud information about his construction business and charitable works.  “Now it turns out he is a total saint.”  (Dude, this is the homework you should have done before befriending him.  Too late now.)  Virginia comes in and immediately starts sowing the seeds against Vero, reminding Emi that she warned him Vero is fast with men, so he shouldn’t be surprised about Martin.

Back at the restaurant…..“Me in love?” asks Martin, smiling and fidgeting.  “Yes.”
“Impossible.”  Her smile disappears.  “Impossible?  So all you said about marrying me, you just said it to look good in front of my uncle?”

“No, I didn’t mean to say that.  It’s just that even I have no idea how much I….”

“What?.....Martin, tell me?”  “I can’t even say it,” he responds.  “Hey, I didn’t think you were so timid,” she laughs.  “Look at you.  You are all nervous, like an adolescent.”  “That’s how I feel with you, like an adolescent….And I can’t allow myself.”

She tells him softly, “Listen, don’t be so hard on yourself.  You can tell me what you feel without fear.  Please tell me.”  (argh.  Now they are interrupted by the hostess, who is ready to take them to their table.)

Once at their table, Vero swears there were moments were Martin’s fencing moves made her afraid.  “And at the very end,….I don’t know, you looked as if you truly hated me.”  (Go with that gut feeling, Vero.)  Do you think there’s a reason why I should hate you?”  No, of course not, Vero has no idea why she even felt that way.  “Especially the way you are looking at me now.  I am sure that you would be incapable of hurting me.”  He leans in and repeats that he was serious when he said he wanted to marry her.  Now she smiles nervously and says:  “I know, but…”  she glances down, nervous, “how can you expect to marry me when you haven’t even given me a kiss?”  He leans in slowly and they share their first true, tender kiss.  (Clearly, the first one didn’t count because that was an unauthorized collision, not a kiss like this one.)

Next episode:  We got mostly images of stuff we already saw, but one very important new thing – Virginia continues to sow the seeds of doubt in Emi, telling him Vero used to bring men into their home, into her bed.

Thanks for the very prompt recap....great detail and I was waiting for it. I really enjoyed this episode and was dying to know what the conversation was between Vero and Martin. So we are getting right into the romance.....maybe the wedding? I do think Martin is so traumatized by his brother's death that he obviously isn't thinking too straight. Especially now that he has loving feelings for Vero. At this point I think a sane man would at least hire a detective to confirm or alleviate his suspicions of Vero's letter writing to Demetrio. I mean that would be what inquiring minds would want to know if falling in love with the object of revenge....don't ya think? Glad that Emiliano warned Martin to not ever hurt Vero. That might hold Martin in check for awhile until he finds out the truth.....(after skipping the detective and going full bore into revenge mode and hurting Vero) It shall all be revealed....eventually!

Thanks, Latina!
I just caught a glimpse of the recap, as I have to get ready for work, but I'll be back later with more comments.
Vero is already in love, Martin is in love/hate, so what does he plan to do next? He would never physically hurt her, that is not galan material. Emotionally, however...

Love your recap Latina! The snark was so welcome and loved your detail on the lovebirds conversations.

All I can say on that....known each other how many days, first date...who talks like that??? And Vero is ALL IN as we say here in NE Ohio. Sorry, but instead of getting into all the mooning and romance, I found myself giggling. Kiss was better though. Hate to say it though, anyone else not seeing tons of chemistry with these two? Maybe it will get better.

So Em-old has laid the foundation for the next lord knows how many episodes, warning Martin he'll come after him if he hurts Vero. I can't wait to see these people hanging out in the jungle. (you know the whole--no phones, etc. I was thinking if Martin has all that money, maybe he could invest in some good satellite phones. Don't need those bothersome phone towers. Wonder how much of going somewhere that technology has been left behind is to just stay with the old TN plot line and make it more believable for viewers? We can't be yelling at the screen "just pull out your cell phone!" )

Botox queen indeed. I have a theory on how we can deal with Em-old as Salma's son. She has a painting that is fearfully aging tucked away in a secret room and she's lied to Jorge about HER age. Her secret will come out and we will watch her turn to dust for her comeuppance. Now, admit it, wouldn't the patio have fun with that? Too bad it won't happen. Ok, back to trying to thinking Em-old is a strapping early 30-something. beanie hurts.

Fantastic recap, Latina!

So are we to believe that Vero is SO unique because she works, engages in sports, and is direct? Really, there are just so FEW women like her? Where have all these people been living? Martin has never met a woman like her? Ok.

Jorge is so funny trying to choose when Vero should date-- his son of course. I like that Vero just kind of rolled her eyes at the whole silly thing.

Martin hasn't really thought out how he's going to do this revenge thing. If he's supposed to be seducing Vero, he isn't really doing a great job. He's lucky that she already has the warmies for him and is willing to cut him some slack with his awkward comments, and holding swords to her throat with hate in his eyes. Most girls would be running for the door seeing that major red flag.

Great recap, Latina! Since no one ever saw the brother's body, I can't help but wonder if he's really alive somewhere. If he did come back, would Martin step aside?

I have to comment on the fencing. I took fencing as my PE in college (many, many moons ago) and nobody would ever take off a mask. There's just too much chance of getting poked in the eye. And there's no looking the opponent in the eye; you have to focus like a laser beam on his weapon, while looking out of the sides of your eyes to keep aware of your position. And there's no circling around your opponent. You can only move up and back; you can't go outside the boundaries. And the outfits ... our fencing vests were almost as thick as potholders. And we women inserted two metal protective disks that we called Frisbees ... not so flattering. And the leaping ... well, maybe they've changed the rules.

Fencing is such a personal sport, more so than tennis singles. I can only imagine that boxing or wrestling would be more personal. I have to go back so far in my memory, but I can recall one young man with long red hair that I particularly enjoyed having as an opponent.

Everyone knows Virginia was hoping Martin would kill Veronica right there on the spot!

Virginia & Salma: The new version of Lucrecia & Cesar ! Even worse.

OK, Emi needs to put on the thinking cap: does he think for one second Jorge would allow Veronica to bring various men into his home, into her bed?

Botel knows he could've snatched up Malena's daughter when he snatched Malena up, but he chose not to. Interesting.

Manuel can go play in traffic for offering the little boy a cigarette.

I think within that social circle, Veronica is unique. All of the other women in that social circle (Salma, Virginia, Montse, Mariana) don't work, they don't play sports, they hide themselves in fakery and charm. They dance to stiff music and talk about shopping, partying and lounging all day. Veronica is the only female of a high social status that we've seen on this show working and doing physical activity. So perhaps within their social circle, a woman working and striving to be independent IS unique.

But Martin didn't come from that class. He worked his way up. And HE'S acting like Vero is some kind of exotic creature.

Thank you Latina, especially for the dialog between Martin and Veronica.

"Martin is once again whining to poor Alfredo (who at this point should demand a raise for having to also serve as his therapist, besides running the construction for him)"

I loved the verbal sparring between Martin and Veronica but wished it was not so soon cause I have this little voice in my head keeps squeaking - stupid, stupid.

Manuel - pssst, pssst, little kid, want some crack

Magdalena - Al-Anon

Ana Perla - I need a knight in shinning armor come to my emotional rescue

Emiliano - facebook search

Virginia - wait, wait, lemme get a pen, "You put the lime in the coconut, you drink 'em both together"

Martin - It must be Looo..oins

Veronica - transparent as mud

Mariana - in them shorts your legs gonna get eat up with chiggers

But Martin might think a woman from that social class would be more like the Virginias & Marianas, not a Veronica. If he found out that "V Prado Castelo" was a sales girl at the mall who liked athletics & working he might not think it was so exotic for V Prado Castelo, shop girl.

But Martin needs to slow his roll: some girl who likes working, playing with swords and trying to tame rough horses is not going to be too prissy to go visit Demetrio in the jungle.

If Veronica is so beautiful & desirable, she'd be able to find a rich man of her social class instead of waiting on Demetrio to become rich. This is akin to believing Paris & Nicky Hilton would wait around for some middle class guy to strike it rich before marrying them, instead of just finding a rich dude from their social class to marry (well Nicky...Paris, not so much).

Thanks, Latina, for this wonderful recap! It held my attention more than the show! As a student of Spanish, I especially appreciate how you point out interesting vocabulary (“cursilerias"). Telenovelas are great for picking up new words. That's how I learned the word for "hitman!"Novela Maven pointed it out in one of her recaps for "Lo que la vida me robó."

I also appreciate Aleta's insights on fencing since I don't know a lot about the sport. Based on what she added, that scene is even more goofy than I thought it was. And why would anybody go out alone with a man that held a sword at your throat and stared at you with half-crazed eyes.

So, it's hard to like Martin as a galán when you know he's got a dastardly plan up his sleeve. I'd almost prefer Veronica choose Emiliano.

Tracy: fact is Martin still has those psychotic & sociopath thoughts about killing Veronica!

Tofie: You're right about Veronica being independent. Haters gonna hate!

REALLY LIKED YOUR RECAP LATINA, NICE TO MEET YOU.
You'er right about the PI, he should have hired one. Hand writing analysis would have been a good place to start. His anger is blocking his vision, his clear thinking vision.

Virginia is a lying little pisshead. She owns Dr. Frenandez. ( I think thats the doc's name) I told yall that hefer ain't sick. Either that or shes cookin up some evil.
Quik question: Is vernica young enough to be malena's daughter, how long ago did she leave her daughter behind? The reason I'm asking is because of what salma said, her father was a drunk, but melena don't look like no ho to me.
I think there is a story there, but we gotta deal with martin and his drama.

that S up there supposed to be an A

Latina, terrific recap. Loved all the snarky asides, especially: Sure, he fantasizes about killing her too, but she doesn’t know that.

Hmmm, as shallow as Salma is, strange that she hasn't given a though that sickly Virginia might be unable to produce an heir.

It's kind of realistic that Vero is missing all the signs of Manuel's rage, but then I can see how she'd be turned on by those penetrating looks and intense moves.

Nina, last night Malena made a comment (to herself) that her missing daughter would be a grown woman now.

Thanks Latina for the recap.
Vero is enamorada already sheesh girl slow your roll. She's vouching for his character but you met him yesterday chica. Virginia acts like she's 2 yrs old throwing herself on the bed to cry. Martin can barely hide his hate for Vero. If I were Vero I would start questioning why he's always bringing up Deme. And Vero never actually answered if she and Deme were a couple leading to Martin speculating, of course, that's the point of the show. Emil is getting scary.. Mom, I am scared uff.
Romy

Nina,

I doubt seriously Malena is a ho. If Malena is Veronica's mother, it probably went down like this:

Malena was married to drunk husband & had Veronica. Malena & Drunk Husband were in Salma/Jorge's social circle. Perhaps Jorge had once taken a fancy to Malena (which Salma did not like) but she married Drunk Husband instead or Salma snagged Jorge first.

Drunk Husband was always drunk and abusive to Malena but charming to everyone else. Botel was also in the Malena/Drunk Husband/Jorge/Salma/Montserrat* social circle. Remember, Botel is/was a doctor.

Botel and Malena fall in love and Botel runs off with Malena, leaving Veronica behind. Because Malena was married to Drunk Husband and ran off with Botel the social circle labeled Malena a ho.

Drunk Husband goes out of his mind and disappears. Young Veronica has nowhere to go. Jorge (having always had a soft spot for Malena) adopts Veronica as a "niece" of the family.

Because Veronica reminds Salma so much of Malena back in the day, Salma hates Veronica.

*If Montserrat was part of the Malena/Drunk Husband/Jorge/Salma social circle back then, she might've gotten her mean girl on with Salma and labeled Malena a ho and Veronica, too (by extension) ......shades of Elisa Castagnon.

But, all we know for sure is this:

Veronica has no parents and is not blood related to the Prado Castelos.

Salma thinks Veronica's mom is a ho.

Malena is married to Drunk Husband and ran off with Botel, leaving her daughter behind.

Botel whined that he gave up everything to run off with Malena.

Botel could've also taken Malena's daughter but chose not to; Malena doesn't know this.

And I don't know if anyone mentioned this tidbit, but Veronica was telling Matilde that she saw Virginia and Demetrio arguing at the office but she didn't know what that was all about.

Thanks for another excellent and revealing recap, Latina. How fine.

Didn't Martín only know about the letter from the bad woman because Padre Juan told him about it? Do we know what happened to it? I don't think that Martín has even seen it. He sure is relying inordinately on a lot of incomplete second and third hand information.

After watching the duel a second time last night, I'm not only questioning Verónica's judgment and taste in men, I downright question her sanity. I'm surprised that she hasn't already succumbed to Darwinian principles. I think that even if his opponent had been a man, Martín's disgraceful and unsportsmanlike behavior should have resulted in his expulsion and banishment from the fencing club. (Thanks Aleta for confirming what I had presumed about the sport though I had no idea about the Frisbees). As much as I don't like to admit it, I'm in complete agreement with Emiliano and Jorge in regard to Martín.

I'm wanting to see more of Nancy and her machete (maybe faced off against Martín and his sword though I fear that she may already be smitten with him).

Carlos

A great recap Latina---Well preserved botoxed faces. Ouch! I'd get in trouble for saying that.

Sure he fantasies about killing her too, but she doesn't know that.
Martin, you snooze you loose. LOL Yes he lost that kiss didn't he last night?

So Vero is about to go on a jungle trip. Ok but---who's going to fill in for her at the family's business? Certainly it won't be Virginia, she doesn't work.
the gringo

Carlos---You want more of Nancy and her machete? I would have thought that you would be wanting more of saucy Virginia by now.
the gringo

Latina, thank you so much for your fabulous, FUNNY recap!

Carlos, so great to read your comments again! Love how you champion the underdog!

@Gringo: Carlos has had a soft spot for Gretel (Virginia) since Maria in LQLVMR. We used to trash her daily and Carlos defended her to the end!

I have only seen Ivan Sanchez as a bad guy but, however flawed his characters' logic, I think he's doing a remarkable job showing a man conflicted by seeking vengeance for his brother and falling madly in love with the object of his wrath.

Anon 207: excellent job guessing Magdelenas back story. You could write novellas!

Thanks again LatinainMD! You should join me and Vivi when we have our DC/MD/VA Caray fan dinners!

Katy- We are long overdue for one of those dinners. All in the area are welcomed!

Selma thinks Vero is a ho just because she goes to work each day. I would trust her judgement about Vero's mom.

That's wouldn't trust her judgement.

Thanks everyone for all your lovely, funny and/or insightful comments. I certainly feel well-fed as a recapper.

And speaking of being well-fed, thanks Katy and Vivi for the open invite to the DC/MD/VA fan dinners. I'm sure they are a blast. I'm not sure, though, if I'll still be around for when you schedule the next one. I'm planning to move back to California in mid-July.

I'm really excited that I'll be living closer to family again, but a little apprehensive about moving 3,000 miles. Things are going to be hectic for me the next 7 to 8 weeks, especially because I'm still working full-time through end of June and have not yet begun packing all my belongings. I will definitely continue my Wednesday recaps, but probably won't have the time to respond individually to your great comments. I do read them though, so keep them coming.

Why would botel get malena out of harms way and leave her little girl. There would have to be some serious danger for me to leave my child. If at all. But I'm not in her shoes, and everyones situation is different. Theres gotta be a good reason. There will be answers as time goes by. Thank the lord.

O marty marty marty, calm yourself before you reck yourself. We'll see how it goes tonight.

What or who is Montserrat?
