El Hotel de los Secretos #77, 5/16/16: A Hot Mess of Crazy
This is my last recap for this outstanding telenovela. I want to say up front just how great a pleasure it's been to watch and read along with the rest of you. The quality of the writing, the acting, the production, and the participation of the Caray community has been a profound delight at a particular moment when I really needed to find something delightful. Thanks to everyone who has come along on this spectacular ride. The TN has been great, but the experience has been awesome.
Ahem. Enough mush. Back to our story.
At the gravesite, Belen's teeny acorn of a heart breaks in two at the sight of her deceased, freshly dug-up child. Dagoberto, Cipriano, and Ayala are all distraught at the scene. Even I have to stifle a sniffle. Ayala et al storm the hotel with guns as Andres consoles Belen. Ayala asks for Diego and is told that he left earlier.
Ayala sifts through volumes of records in Diego's office. Teresa tells Mateo to make sure Ayala doesn't open up the safe without her permission. Teresa goes to her own office and calls the insurance company.
Meanwhile, Isabel shows Julio the life insurance policy that was written with Teresa as beneficiary. Funny thing, the date on it is after Romulo's accident.
Ayala is already trying to open the safe when Teresa returns. She tells him it's Diego's personal safe and no one else knows the combination. Ayala says he'll blast it open.
Baby #1 gets a proper burial. Belen panics as the men begin to shovel dirt onto the tiny coffin. They back off to give her some space. She asks Andres to get her other child for her. She won't forgive him if he doesn't.
Judge Barreda is telling someone on the phone that everything is under control and business is business, when Ignacio, Matilde and a squad of reporters and photographers burst in to give him the good news of Belen's reappearance. The judge has no choice but to tell the reporters that the charges against Andres are being dropped. Ignacio and Matilde exchange smug looks.
Felipe is released from prison, and his sweet little Jorge is waiting for him outside. He invites Jorge back to the hotel, and is swatted on the behind in assent.
Diego and Mummy arrive at a country house where they will hide out for a little while. Diego begins hearing voices. THIS IS SO AWESOME. Mummy promises not to leave him, ever.
Belen and Andres meet with Olegario. Andres is taking control of the hotel. Olegario is delighted to finally see a "true Alarcon" running the place.
Felipe is at the hotel. He asks Mateo for his old suite back. Mateo admits that they have a lot of suites open now that so many people have been fleeing the place. Jorge makes a snide remark. Mateo asks Felipe if he's going to share a room with this guy. Jorge has no bags - just this (indicating the pistol). Jorge doesn't want them to send up foofy little finger-foods and champagne, no, he'd like rabbit and mezcal!
Upstairs, Felipe and Jorge run into Cecilia's "nieces," who tease them and are offended that they aren't being invited to party with them.
Teresa knocks at Dr. Vic's door. Belen comes by and tells her to give back her baby or else this place will fall down all around her, stone by stone.
In their suite, Felipe tells Manuela he can't stand it, he needs her to dress like a woman. So, already he is giving the orders, eh? She reacts exactly the way you'd expect. He rips the mustache off her face. She tells him to look at all the women in his life, even those women in the hallway. None of them are free.
In Sofia's room, Teresa begins packing up the baby's stuff. She says there's a new deal. Sofia begs her mother to let her keep the only thing she has. Teresa says that what Sofia is feeling now is what Teresa has been feeling her whole life.
Julio and Isabel hear the silence all over the hotel and smooch freely in the hallway. Uh-oh, Cecilia has heard them. What room are they in now? It's not the secret room and it's not Rom's study. Well, wherever they are, they're about to destroy the bed. Yeah!
Early morning.
Cecilia tells her nieces to pack up their stuff. They're going home.
While Julio and Isabel snuggle in bed, Isabel has a flashback and remembers that her kidnapper's name was Juana.
Felipe wakes up alone. He tries to convince himself that it's better that way.
Sofia treats herself to a few drops of laudanum. Just what she needs.
In her own room, Belen gratefully holds her baby and says they'll be together forever.
Matilde checks out the exhumed body of not-Belen and determines that it's indeed the woman she had checked for syphilis. The judge wants to explain away her murder as bad behavior from "those kind of people," but Ignacio and Matilde advance their own theory that this woman was murdered to fake Belen's death and get Andres executed so Belen could get his inheritance. Again, the judge has no choice but to promise to support them in the search for the accomplices.
Olegario brings Andres to gloat at Teresa and tell her she's no longer the director of the hotel. The new director is... wait for it... ANGELA! Because no one loves the hotel more than her.
At first, Angela is as surprised and dismayed as Teresa. But Andres talks her into it. And the centenario celebration is just a couple of days away!
Isabel tells Ayala what she remembers about her kidnapper. Not much: a man called her "Juana," and she called the man "Simon." The name "Juana" seems to ring a bell for Ayala. Isabel also presents the falsified life insurance policy naming her mother as beneficiary. Ayala warns that this could reveal something painful. Isabel doesn't think it can get any more painful than it already has been. Oh and one more thing: investigate about her parents trying to kill one another.
Diego is in bed, apparently delirious with fever. Mummy (who's back in the black satin number with doily collar) is dabbing at him with moist towels. He asks why he had to be away from her for five years. She says it was either that or lose him forever. He had to disappear as if he had never existed. Their helpful friend could only hide one of them. She refers to a particular fateful night, but we don't get any details. He wants to be Diego Montejo, married to Isabel Alarcon, but Mummy says he's Juan Camilo, and he'd better remember that so as not to make the same error again.
Mummy goes out to buy some train tickets. She tells him to stay put. What are the odds of that?
At the hotel, the servants are very excited about Angela's ascendancy. Equally exciting is that Lupe's recipes have been published in a book! (If only he could read!)
Judge Barreda informs Olegario that he's going to have to back out of their deal because the dead woman has been identified. Olegario is pissed.
Diego is awakened from his feverish sleep by an apparition: it's Clara, his first dead wife. She is dressed in white and she taunts him to remember what he did to her.
Isabel and Julio take the conflicting life insurance policies to the insurance company. Isabel explains that her father was in a coma on the date that his signature was written on the policy that named Teresa as beneficiary. The agent admits that it must be an "error." Isabel says she'll take it up with the police. The agent jumps up and promises that he'll cooperate and help them find out.
At the cantina, Violeta recognizes the guy who was last seen with Fulgencia and points him out to Melibea. Melibea shoos away his saloon girl and offers to take care of him herself. There is vengeance in her eyes, but he's too dumb to notice. She takes him outside, and for a moment, it looks as though she's underestimated the task at hand.
Alfredo is back at the hotel. He asks for a suite and please don't tell Teresa he's here. Sofia wakes to find him in her room. She greets him joyfully, but he backs away, saying she reeks of laudanum. He's not here for her; he's here for his child.
Ayala is trying to analyze some information about the Masons and their political ties when the Colombian ambassador calls. They don't have any information about Juana, but they have info about her son.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST: COLOMBIA, FIVE YEARS EARLIER...
Clara, all dressed in white, finds Juan Camilo (with a beard) waiting for her at a private dinner table in their home. It's their anniversary. She's surprised that he's earlier than expected. She says she was out shopping. Of course she remembered it's their anniversary - she got him one of those ice cube orchids at Home Depot. His gift for her is, I don't get a good look, but it might be one of those cameos that he hands out like butterscotch candies.
After dinner, Juan Camilo pokes around the orchids and finds a love letter hidden in the soil. It's either to Clara from Samuel, or to Samuel from Clara, but either way he doesn't like it. He confronts her, is displeased with her answer, and slits her throat. He sets the place on fire and watches the flames close in while his wife gasps her final breath.

Oh hey folks. Just a heads up - if I heard that right, they're saying the gran final is TWO hours on Friday night. I'm not sure if that means we're losing an episode another night this week, or if we're going to top out at 82 hours rather than 81.
You make a few typos and you have to start all over again! Anyway, thank you, Julie, for the wonderful recaps. Yes, this novela did turn out to be really something special. "Ice cube orchid from Home Depot" too funny!
I first chuckled at the Jorge/Manuela and Felipe meetup when he/she stated her preference for young goat, rabbit and mezcal. It was too bad that the relationship had to devolve into Felipe wanting Jorge/Manuela to change. I loved when Jorge/Manuela told him that he/she was as he/ she was and that he/she was not asking Felipe to give anything up and then just left. It seems as soon as Felipe was on his own turf and feeling confident he turned into the same old jerk he always was.
Alfredo came back for the baby? Really?
Ayala was so entertaining not wanting to take the time and effort to explain exactly who/what the Masons were but at the same time wanting to convince Dogoberto and company that they had nothing to do with the devil.
So now we know that old Diego has been sick and twisted for a long long time. It was bad enough how he slit Clara's throat and set the house on fire but the creepiest part of that scene was when he touched her bloodied neck and then tasted her blood from his finger before leaving.
I cannot wait to see what tomorrow's episode brings.

I'll admit it, that ending was a tough one to watch. Chilling, but amazingly acted and filmed. Diego has been one sick puppy all his life, covered by a society he belonged to, probably his wealth and a mother who was equally sick in her willingness to cover and condone his behavior. Boy, mothers in this tale have some 'splaining to do.
I'm going with the significance of Diego setting fire to the house after killing his wife. My theory on the Hotel going up in flames lives another day.
And we still have the celebration? Ok then. Oleg sure was having a very bad day yesterday. Boo Hoo. But damn, I sure am liking Iggy more every day. That move on the Judge with Mati was beyond awesome!
I was waiting for the truth to come out about how that first baby died, but they must be saving that for another day. For right now, not knowing that Alfie was on his way back, I'd rather the baby with Belen than Sophia. But UA I think you are on to something, having Alfie back knowing Belen needs her own anvil ending may mean our littlest cast member will have his "daddy" back. Lord that poor child.

When it comes to scheduling gran final episodes, Univision has been throwing us curve balls for as long as I've been recapping. The summer of 2007, they changed the plan on us several times for the La Fea Mas Bella final. We went crazy trying to figure out what was going to happen, and we didn't know for sure until very close to the actual date. (Actually, even then we weren't completely sure what was happening until it was happening. There was a multi-hour episode, but the first hour turned out to be a repeat that didn't need to be re-recapped.)
So, we should be used to this kind of nonsense by now. But it still annoys. It's a very strange way to get people to watch.

Is the doctor's name either "Simon" or "Samuel"? The IMDB web site says the character's name is "Lazaro". I don't recall him being called Simon or Samuel? I checked the Univision web site for El Hotel, and it doesn't list the character name for the doctor.
Goblue, he's going by the name "Lazaro," but when he met with Diego's mother she called him Simon. It appears "Lazaro Vicario" is either a completely fake name, or the name of another doctor (because Alfredo's mother was able to check his references).

I was mad when Melibea insulted Violeta for no reason. So much buildup for nothing.
The way that Clara absolutely cowered as she took the chair told me she had been abused my Diego before. This is just his behavior to women. Only woman he cowers to is his momma like a small boy, so to feel like a man, he has to manhandle every woman he comes in contact with. Seems his mother supported that when she was holding Isa--something to the affect is she just behaved, things would work out, agreeing that any wife he had was to be a submissive puppet.
I'm really pissed at Flippy, and I have been on his side through a lot of this, but I don't think we have seen the end of Manuela. Now, how it plays out, who knows. Last night I had this vision of him caught in the crossroads of Diego's madness or maybe the revolutionaries coming through at the celebration and he goes down protecting someone...and Manuela is there to get his I Love You. The way he screwed up that hotel seen, I'm now not too confident he survives this tail...he can't get out of his own way, but maybe he redeems himself before the end.
I don't think I heard Simon either when Diego was reading the letter. It just fits too well to think of her as the "Doc's" lost daughter.

There was a scandal under him when it was discovered that he had signed some documents associated with businesses of his father that were basically conflicts of interests or illegal and to which he benefited from the shares. Sort of sounds a bit like our current plot.
He died in a plane crash that also killed a number of others after returning from some political benefit.

Terrific recap, Julie! In fact, this whole recap team is brilliant. I’ve been reading the recaps faithfully as this show is wonderfully written which means more elaborate Spanish and lots of new vocabulary (I particularly love the lines written for Ayala) - and then there are the crappy captions. With all the plot twists and turns, I would have been lost without you all.
I didn’t mean to be a lurker, but I read the recaps in the evening before the next episode, so I’m always too late to join the party. It’s been a real treat to watch this excellent show and then to read the splendid recaps and the wonderful comments. You all rock.
I almost bailed on this show because of all the anachronisms, the worst of which is that Julio is always running around with a few days’ growth of beard, something somebody wearing tails and gloves would never dream of doing in this time period. Plus, he’d be fired for it. But my Mexican girlfriend talked me into staying with Hotel and am I very glad I did.
I’m just furious that they are cutting the show, once again right near the end. We all watch these things for months for the juicy payoff in which evil is punished and good rewarded, and then Univision decides that’s the time to cut out the scenes we’ve been panting to see. For instance, last night where was the scene in which the baby is handed over to Belen? I was her moment of triumph and also of reunion with her child. I can’t believe they cut it.

Hi Maggie. Glad you were able to make it to the party before we ran out of episodes! Yes, the costumes, the casting, the sets, the props, the acting... you can tell that this TN was made with great care and pride.
Nanette, good question about Clara. That must have been his mother in the study that day. (It couldn't have been a hallucination, because Mateo told Diego he had a visitor.) Diego's mother wouldn't have dared use her real name, but she knew "Clara" would get her son's attention! That would explain the look of terror on his face, too.
Just watched Diego lose it on Hulu, the letter does say Samuel, ok back to the theory of Doc being the padre of Clara. My listening skills aren't so good.

Oh what a line, "teeny acorn of a heart". But yes, she does have one. I have to admit I melt when she's with her babies, dead or alive. It's her one redeeming feature. I like that the characters are nuanced. Well, except for Diego who seems thoroughly bad, bad bad.
The throat cutting scene was more graphic than I needed. Plus the terrible sense of doom one felt in every moment Diego and Clara were together. Plotting, mood-setting, everything about this telenovela has been a delight. And especially the hardworking recap team. Thanks so much.

Judy, I'm just glad that Caray is still here, and that there was something that I wanted to watch and recap. Yago was an unexpected bonus!
I think the "nuance" of Diego is that he's now bad PLUS crazy. Have we seen any hint of that before? Obviously he has shown some anger issues, but I never got the impression that he was cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs until he first met with his mother last week and turned into a whining, groveling weenie. The transformation was disturbing.
I hope Diego doesn't get to kill himself or have a deadly accident in the midst of his insanity. I want him to live long enough to get nailed by one or more of the women he has wronged. Belen can have her anvil, whatever it turns out to be, after she sees Diego get his.
And Sofia with the drugs - of Sofia and Felipe, I think she is the one who is more likely to end up dead. Even at the best of times, she never seemed very alive. I can't envision any kind of future for her that isn't totally miserable.

Julie- I just watched the episode. My goodness, what an ending. Yeah, poor Clara was shaking like a leaf. Obviously, she has experienced Juan Camilo's anger before. I was expecting him to beat her up and get super crazy/violent. The calm way he slit her throat, set the fire, and tasted her blood was even more chilling. *shiver*
