Yago #59, Wednesday August 24, 2016: Party-Poopers
(Official episode title: "Deadly Attack." That's not fun at all!)
- Fidel and Selma prepare to say goodbye to their home and friends by planning a going-away party.
- Lucio and Camilo set Sara up with a wedding planner to keep her distracted while they plan their totally nonviolent, lightning-fast, surgical strike on Fidel's place to get Julia.
- Julia tries to get Ximena to attend Fidel's going-away party. She is unsuccessful, but a follow-up visit from Yago changes Ximena's mind.
- Katia is allowed to make a supervised phone call to warn about an attack, but no one picks up the phone.
- At the party, Abel asks Julia to marry him, and she accepts.
- The nonviolent, lightning-fast, surgical strike on Fidel's place is a totally sloppy bloodbath from the get-go. It takes forever, and Selma is killed.
- Fidel finds Camilo crying over Selma's body. They struggle, and Camilo shoots Fidel. Julia sees her dead parents and is grabbed by Hernan.
The blow-by-blow: BELOW
Flashback: Fidel remembers the day Selma left Camilo at the altar to run away with Fidel. Despite all the gunplay and the fact that they might have to spend the rest of their lives hiding from Camilo, Selma would prefer that to living with a man she doesn't love. In the present, Fidel tells Selma he's feeling nostalgic about the old theater they've been living in. He finds this odd, since they've only used it for vengeance. But Selma points out that it's also where they met Julia and started planning a new life.
Fidel gives Yago a book to give to Katia when she gets out of rehab. He also gives Yago the chess set. It's all starting to feel real!
Lucio and Camilo talk about the upcoming, totally nonviolent, lightning-fast plan to surgically extract Julia from Fidel's lair. Camilo is emphatic that he doesn't want any blood spilled. Lucio assures him that it will be a clean job. Camilo also wants to make sure Sara is kept out of their plans entirely. Lucio has an idea to keep her distracted: they get her a wedding planner named Daniela.
Sara knows exactly why the wedding planner is here; she confronts Lucio about it. Lucio asks her if she's going to wear a black dress to her wedding.
Abel gets Julia to invite Ximena to Fidel's going-away party. They have a friendly chat at Ximena's place, but Ximena really doesn't want to see Yago. Julia says Yago's different with Ximena; he's happy when he's with her. Ximena says she already knows about Yago's vendetta, and vengeance never ends. Ximena's not cut out for that kind of life.
Later, Julia finds Abel slacking on the job. She has been working hard to prepare for the move, but Abel is mostly loafing and drinking. They argue, and she apparently takes off. Yago and Teo come over. They "help" Abel pack - actually, they do all of the work while he babbles about how moody Julia's being. He doesn't know why. Maybe it's hormones. Yago points out that Abel isn't easy to be with.
Julia meets with Fidel and says this is all happening too fast. Maybe she didn't really think things through. What if things don't work out with Abel. Maybe Abel's not the best dad for her child. She's getting cold feet. Fidel says (I am paraphrasing wildly): Life does not hand out guarantees. Maybe Abel is right for you and maybe he isn't, but don't be afraid to live.
Fidel gives Julia a necklace. He has one that he's going to give Selma, too. He says he's getting old and corny. Julia suggests that he write Selma a nice letter, too.
Sara is trying on a white bridal gown. She flashes back to the last time she tried on a white bridal gown, on the day of her hoax wedding to Yago. Daniela is talking up a storm about wedding dresses and how Sara should wear an orchid in her hair. She notices that Sara isn't smiling. The chit-chat gets on Sara's nerves. She sneaks out from the fitting room and somehow gets to Yago's place. I guess she and Daniela took separate cars.
At Yago's, Sara says she can't marry Camilo. She can't even stand to kiss him. She sure likes kissing Yago, though! Yago says he'll never be able to forgive her, but he can't stop loving her, either.
Daniela calls Lucio. She followed Sara to Yago's. Sara had texted her, apologizing for leaving without notice, saying that it was an emergency; but clearly there was no emergency. Lucio writes Daniela a check and asks her not to tell Camilo or anyone else about this.
At the treatment center, a frantic Katia tells the attendants that her dealer threatened to harm her friends. They actually agree to let her call - with supervision. Unfortunately, Teo is busy and never picks up the call. The doctor tries to calm Katia, reminding her that dealers are always making empty threats as a way to control addicts.
Fidel and Selma prepare for the party. Their best guards are in place. Fidel leaves his jacket behind, and Selma's new necklace and Fidel's letter fall out of the pocket when Selma picks up the jacket. Selma sneaks a look at the necklace and reads the letter. From the look on her face, the letter's very good - but we don't get to hear it. (Since they're together pretty much 24/7, what can that letter possibly say that she hasn't heard yet?)
Lucio taunts Sara about her visit to Yago, but promises that her secret is safe with him. He gives her an account number to her share of the Punto Azul deal. He's still planning to win her back.
Ximena goes to Yago's house. She says she's going to the party only to say goodbye to Julia. Yago desperately explains that he really did think he was over Sara, until she was in danger. He's been fighting to let go of his feelings for her. "I won't blame you if you say no, but please don't leave me," he begs. "I need her now for business reasons, but I want my future to be with you."
And now we're at the party. Fidel makes a little speech to acknowledge all these wonderful people in his life, including Katia who can't be with us right now.
Now, I'll wait here while you get whatever facial tissues, beer and/or ice cream, etc. you need to get through the rest of this.
Abel makes a very pretty speech to Julia, asking her to marry him. He says he's not the ideal man for Julia, and he won't be an ideal father, but he will do all he can to deserve Julia. Julia accepts, and says "I love you."
Ximena sneaks out of the theater. Yago follows her. He says, "I love you. I want to love only you. Trust that we can make our own story." Ximena asks him not to break her heart. They return to the party, where everyone is dancing.
Except Fidel. He's looking at the necklace, and at Selma, who is dancing with someone else (Teo?). Abel (who is yet again holding the cigarette, but not smoking it) cajoles Fidel to join in the dancing; Fidel sticks Selma's necklace and letter back into his pocket and dances with Julia.
Selma wanders off. Teo notices a missed call on his phone and runs off to call back.
Camilo and his men drive up. Cam tells Lucio to leave the engine running. He'll grab Julia and be right back. Hah! They have no trouble entering the building, because Fidel's men's throats have already been cut, and they bleed uselessly on the Astroturf. (Fidel's men are the WORST! They're even more hapless than the red-shirt security guys from Star Trek.)
Julia and Abel are still dancing. Yago and Ximena are snogging. Julia notices that her parents aren't around. She goes off to look for them. A moment later, Teo runs in, announcing that the clinic called to say that Fidel's place was going to be attacked. At that moment, one of Camilo's men barges in with a machine gun. (Perfect timing! That guy should try comedy!)
Everyone takes cover as Camilo's men spread out to look for Julia. Camilo finds someone in the first place he looks - it's Selma, and she's already dead. He cries and kisses her.
Guns are going off all over the place; the theater is like a popcorn popper full of lead kernels. Teo, Abel, and Yago shoot back. Fortunately, they are much better marksmen than Camilo's henchmen; Cam's men are dropping left and right, but there's so dang many of them.
Camilo continues to cry over his one and only love, smearing raspberry jelly all over himself as he holds her and screams and wails.
Teo covers Ximena as the battle continues. There are dead men in suits all over the place. Yago and Abel run off to look for Fidel and Selma.
Fidel finds Selma and Camilo. "What did you do?!" Fidel yells. "She was dead when I got here! I didn't do anything!" Camilo replies. He insists that they had a truce, that he was respecting the truce and came here only for Julia. Fidel draws his gun, but Camilo shoots first.
As Fidel sinks to the floor, his hand on his chest, Julia sees and screams, "Papa! NooooOOOOOooooo!!!!" Hernan grabs her.
And that's enough for tonight.

I'm betting that Lucio shot Selma. He's itching to start a bloodbath.

Heartbroken about Selma, but given that she died, I'm glad Fidel only had a moment of heartbreak himself before he joined her. It is Camilo who will have longer to suffer the consequences of his decisions and those whom he hired to carry them out. What a sad sad story. And we see the mirror images of these dreadful decisions every night on the news.
Horrible for Julia having no family members at all because of Daddy Michell's violent revenge plot.
Team Avengers imploding before our eyes & it's going to get worse.
The ending of this episode was a sock to the gut, and I do not envy Julie having to recap it. I'm sure her recap will be marvelous and entertaining, despite the grim happenings.
I hope Camilo does away with Hernan and Lucio but I suspect Lucio will be with us until the last episode.
Steve, I know you are right bec even if everyone stayed alive moving forward the damage has been done.
These last episodes are going to be tough. We are down to 6? 1 tonight, 4 next week and what, the finale following week?
It was inevitable. You can expect similar attack against the Guerrero's. Just watch!
Julia is never going to speak to Camilo again, and will likely spit in his face.
Again, I'm sure that Lucio killed Selma. If so, combined with also being part of Ambar's death, that will make him the most hated character by all of our other characters. Sara will be out for his blood, Matias will never forgive him, Abel will want to cut off all his fingers and his toes, Camilo will want to throw him off a roof, Julia will want to tear his eyes out. When Teo finds out what he did to Katia, he'll want to pump him full of bullets. And for Ambar, Selma, and Katia, I can't even imagine what Yago will want to do to him.
And no, I can't imagine what Yago will want to do to Lucio.
I can't even imagine what Ximena will say to Yago after this. They haven't had a lot of good dates, have they?
Great job on the recap.
I too could not believe they killed Selma. Poor Julia. First she learns that Cam is not her bio dad, and when she starts getting along with her bio parents they too are taken from her.
I know this story is very violent, but I really enjoy it. I think its because it is a total change from the usual novela recipe.
Thanks again Julie.
Hasta Pronto!
But there is also the issue that Univision's audience is accustomed to a particular type of telenovela, and neither Yago nor Hotel was typical. Univision doesn't do a great job of setting expectations or attracting new eyeballs when they have something "different" to offer. I don't know the answer to that problem, but I do know that when you do attract new viewers and then change the deal on them, it does NOT help.
They need to experiment in order to compete with Telemundo. But they also have to stand by their experiments if they want them to pay off. Experimentation is a long-term commitment. You can't just dip your toe in, and then panic and give up because the water seems a bit chilly. You gotta swim, baby! If you want to play it safe then you have to get used to not winning.
Sorry for the mixed metaphors. I've been very frustrated by this.
"(Perfect timing! That guy should try comedy!)"
Why shouldn't Selma die? It's consistent and other than Damien (maybe Fidel) all the other thugs live to thug out another day.
I don't understand Ximena. Stay with a guy she knows is using her to distract himself.
Bold prediction: Lucio will go after the Guerrero's.
Wow this was a tragic and suspensful episode. When things start to feel happy and blissfull you know something is cooking up.
I believe El Hotel and Yo No Creo was a better show than Yago. It's not about violence or the story. I just don't feel Ivan Sanchez as a complicated creature Yago. I feel that Flavio Medina should have been Yago while Ivan would portray Lucio.
So sad for Julia. Will Camilo realize Lucio planned this bloodbath all along?
Abel isn't right for Julia (or almost anyone), but I can see her clinging to him now. The one thing I am liking is that Abel and Yago are together against Lucio.
Niecie: On Daddy Michell. I don't think he'll find out that Lucio was the one, who planned the bloodbath. I also see Lucio plotting a similar bloodbath against the Guerrero's: just wait & see.
Given how much time Julia spends at Abel's place, it's pretty lucky that they just happened to pick a time when Julia was at Fidel's. I don't think Katia knew the particulars of when the party would be (ICBW).
In the wAy we view, understand and communicate our feelings about the telenovelas!!! I know we are escaping but so what!!! We have figured out the importance of communicating about these nuances
Julie! Bien dicho!, (well said). I still cannot figure out the darn scheduling but i have given up on that. Sometimes i watch it via ON DEMAND and other times in my DVR recordings. It's best not to strain my brain any further by thinking too much about it. . It does amaze me how i am able to watch something so violent since i never go to see movies when I know there is extreme violence. Of course the forward button on my DVR remote is super helpful especially when i see Hernan's face 😣 He reminds me of an ISIS fighter, without any humanity--- suhuman or rather non-human.
I think that Sara is THE most confusing character, especially with that ridiculous smirky smile of hers.
