Por Amar Sin Ley, Season 2 Viernes 7/12/19 Episode 81: Honesty Ad Nauseam
Prelude
To be honest, the PASL transmission was interrupted several times in the beginning, with the screen going black. Fortunately those blackouts occurred when Carlos and Michelle were on screen.
To be honest, Roberto continues to deny, in the face of his closest friends, that he is in love with Victoria. He’s perplexed by Vic’s refusal to believe his honesty and sincerity and accepts Adrián’s explanation without batting an eye (oh, wait, she did bat her eyes, several times). He does admit that during the time he stayed in Vic’s apartment he felt at peace, caring for her, protecting her. Ric and Gus think it’s love. Bobby isn’t sure if that is love. Love shouldn’t hurt or hurt others—look at his parents. Ric says love is not the problem, it’s the people. Bobby sure needed that drink with his buds. He leaves them early because he’s heading to Monterey the next morning.
To be honest, Juan believes he must fulfill Tatiana’s every spoken whim thinking that will make him a more important looking man. After seeing that sport car take off she remarked on what a sharp looking car that was, worthy of Juan, though she added Juan is more handsome. He checks his finances at home and takes the first opportunity to go back to the car dealer for a trade-in. Though staggered by the sticker price, Juan plunges headlong into the driver’s seat and mounting debt. Mamita will not be pleased with her little boy (but I bet Tatiana will be).
To be honest, Maite doesn’t understand much about the running of a large important family company and is dealing with the aftermath of her father’s death and with all the siblings inheriting the business. The two brothers wish to change the way the company is run—looking toward the future, and cutting out their sister of any decision-making, claiming she has no business sense. They want her to sign over her rights in return for a fixed amount of the profits. Maite won’t sign anything she hasn’t read and takes the documents home and calls Alonso Vega, an old friend of her father’s. He gathers up a team consisting of himself, Bobby and Javier to head for Monterey the next day.
To be honest, Adrián makes too much ado over honesty and trust hoping to elicit a spark of sincere interest from Victoria.
To be honest, Lorena is acting like a moonstruck teenager over a rock star who may or may not have looked her way at a concert. She squeees to Manuel that Gus cares for her because he wants to protect her from any harm coming from those bad elements lurking nearby.
All the Acts
Camila has tearfully accepted that the day may come when she can no longer make decisions for herself. She’s thankful she can trust Sofia implicitly to make the right decisions for her. They exchange love and hugs. Over a nice cup of calming tea, Sofia explains to Cam how she’s planning to ask Ric to help her with this “juicio de interdicción” (which is a special type of power of attorney for individuals with dementia, who may still have times they are lucid and needs to go through a judge). Cam hopes that when she’s no longer able to be of help and support for Sofia, someone like Ric would be there for her. [I think Ric heard her.]
Carlos and Michelle are having a nite-cap. She’s pitching her woo: she feels calm when she’s with him. Carlos pitches woo right back: same here. The house phone rings (really?). Michelle offers to get up and go get it (really, Carlos?). She notes the call is from a shady looking character named Aureliano, whose mug shot is clearly displayed (really?). Carlos takes the call and walks away, acting a bit shady himself. Michelle helps herself to his end of the conversation without his being aware. She hears him say that he’ll get the money to him, but tomorrow is too short notice. She doesn’t hear how happy Aureliano is to hear his dirty, telltale fingerprint problem has gone away. She tries to milk any more information she can out of Carlos. He tries to say as little as possible, but a long sexy bare leg draws him out to explain this client deals in merchandise and he helps with his transactions and such. Michelle muses it must be a nuisance to have clients calling at all hours of the night. Carlos says this client is special and he wants to stop talking about work and get on to some kissing. Michelle decides she has to leave. She tells Carlos she has an early start, interviewing a potential hire. With puppy dog eyes peeled on her, Carlos offers his phone (really?) for her to call this person and reschedule for later on. Michelle takes the phone to another room and notes Aureliano’s contact information, returning to tell Carlos she doesn’t have the person’s contact information, so she’ll just have to be on her way. She promises to make it up to Carlos the next day.
After Bobby leaves the bar, Gus and Ric talk about how their investigation into the Vega attacks are stymied. They haven’t found anything to connect the attacks to El Gringo. The only thing that is known about him is that he operates in the city. They discuss the antecedents to the attacks and they seem to point to the Dorante brothers (remember them? Jacinto was “eliminated” in prison and Ramiro is rightly scared to death to talk about what he knows). Ric says he knows one person who is currently in prison who is connected to both Ramiro and Carlos’ foundation. That would be Benjamin (remember him? Benji went to prison for money laundering and fraud). Gus isn’t on board with using him, but Ric convinces him he might help. This might be their only opportunity. Gus persuades Ric to each follow his own trails otherwise they would waste time working in tandem.
Alan has survived. The doc calls Carlos from the hospital to tell him that in all probability he will be transferred back to the prison infirmary soon. Carlos thanks him for the news, but it doesn’t seem to affect him one way or another.
Ric checks in on Sofia and commends her for the steps she’s taking with her mother. Sofia mentions the “voluntad anticipada” (this is a living will or advance directive), which she did not discuss with Cam at the time. Ric volunteers his help and is willing to approach Cam and do the talking, removing the awkwardness of a familial relationship from Sofia. He tells her he wants to be there for her always. He leans over to review one of the documents and it’s obvious she’s flustered by his closeness.
Gus comes in to the Library to apologize to Lorena for being such a prick with her when she offered to help him. She keeps insisting on her desire to help him, with work, to make him feel better, anything (to stay close to him). He wants her to stay out of this case because he’d never forgive himself if something were to happen to her. He wants to protect her. Lorena says she wants to protect him, too. Gus finally concedes—but will only accept her help with cases that have nothing to do with the assaults. Later she tells Manuel that Gus wanting to protect her is proof that he cares about her. Manuel gives up.
The Vega trio has arrived in Monterey. Alonso is counseling Maite on the docs her brothers want her to sign. Bobby explains that it shows they are protecting themselves from any illegalities, but by signing, she’s giving up all her rights to participate in the family business. She admits to not having done so up to now. Javier explains that her brothers are offering her a part of whatever is earned in Mexico, but the new associate will be expanding the business in China and if she signs the docs they gave her, she gives up any earnings made in China.
The two brothers, meanwhile, are congratulating themselves over Maite acceding and coming in with the signed docs. They are sure this move will grow the business bigger than their father ever imagined AND it will all be for just the two of them. Maite arrives, followed immediately by the Vega trio. The boys wonder what the A-Team is doing there. Alonso explains that they are there in person in response to Maite’s plea for help in understanding the docs she was asked to sign. There’s a bit of verbal sparring, but in the end, the boys’ little game of bait and switch is uncovered. Alonso says they could be charged with fraud, but he’d prefer to resolve the matter in-house. He suggests they renegotiate the terms. They boys aren’t too happy, but they call the in-house lawyer who drew up the original docs. An older gentleman shows up.
Nancy is doing a little extra-curricular investigation into Michelle’s company. She learns there is no activity related to that company; no invoices or bills for anything.
Adrián, seated in Vic's office, begins to lay the groundwork that will lead up to his declaring he’s in love with Victoria. Vic assures him everything is fine with them (the Debbie revelation) and appreciates his honesty with her. She values honesty in a relationship above all else. He would like her to be able to trust him, knowing she's been hurt in the past. He wants her to know he’d never do anything to betray her trust or hurt her. He wants her to know she can count on him. He tells her he’s aware he’s far from perfect and leaves it up to her to decide whether she wants a closer relationship with him or not (hmmm, she takes his hand in hers). She answers coyly that no one is perfect. He claims he could live with her defects, but so far he hasn’t found any in her. Still holding hands, she says she does trust him. A lot.
Nancy slithers in to Carlos’ office offering to help a very occupied Carlos who is successfully shuffling papers back and forth and around. In fact, he gets quite snippy with her. She suggests maybe she can help with the Michelle case. He states that it’s done, he was merely helping with the registration. So, she posits, it’s up and running? Yes, he answers quite definitively. Nancy adds that nugget to her mental filing cabinet. Instead of asking about Michelle, Carlos suggests she take over Alan’s cases. She gives him a couple of dagger-glances as she exits.
Michelle is enjoying wine and cigarettes with her sedentary investigation of – who else, Aureliano, named as El Ciego by the media. She learns Carlos’ role in setting free an accused narco trafficker. Her brother, El Gringo, interrupts her review. At the end of their little interaction, it is obvious who wears the pants in the family. It only required some harsh words and after getting slapped by Michelle, El Gringo reestablishes primacy by getting rough with her. He’s pissed because Michelle is wasting her time sleeping with this Carlos dude when she was supposed to be getting information on El Ciego from him (which he could have found out as easily on the internet, DUDE) and so far she has given him zilch. He announces that it’s over, she’ll not be seeing Carlos again and things are going to be done HIS way from now on (you go, DUDE). Oh wait, no, El Gringo says he’s going to kill El Licenciado (that Ibarra fellow).

Maybe I’m bad,, but I can’t stand his personality......gullible with Tatiana. He’s returning to the old neighborhood real soon, you watch.

Anita, here’s my take on Carlos. He will be exposed for all his crimes. He will end up in the
same cell as his cousin. They will drive each other mad. Living forever in the shared cell. I gonna say. Nancy, of the pouty
red mouth will die at the hands of Michele. El Ciego will escape and be ready for PASL3. And I do want Lorena and Gustavo to be an end piece. She’s young enough to give him children....she kinda looks like Isabelle....So what if he’s older? Oh and Polly will see the light and come come back begging to Alejandra’s mother forgiveness.

JudyB—Nice to see you throwing your eyes our way once in awhile. It perks up the rather small, but dedicated Patio. You didn’t mention Adrian and Victoria. I’m still pulling for them. The only way Adrian won’t end up with Vic is if something fatal happens to him or he turns out to be a serial abuser—not. I’ve decided he’s one of the Givers, while Bobby is one of the Takers. Vic deserves a Giver, one who will just shower her with love and attention. Comments like yours make stretching my brain cells worth it. Thanks for stopping by.
Ah, we do stretch our brain cells doing this Anita. So as Paula Polvorones says, it's nice to hear people at least shuffling their feet out there. I'll try to shuffle mine a little more regularly.
But I have to confess that I'm a Bobby fan, in spite of his checkered past. Adrian's niceness and sincerity bore me (perhaps wouldn't feel that way in real life, but...) whereas the thought of Victoria bagging Roberto and changing him from a bounder into a good guy is delicious. May not happen. But I like the idea.
Dale tiempo a tiempo. And we'll see. Not sure where the writers are going with this.

Anon—You said it all in a nutshell regarding Juan. But, to give him the benefit of doubt, he’s been so sheltered by his mother his whole life, that being out in the real world is making him dizzy. I think he’s always wanted to get out of the old neighborhood, but it doesn’t seem as though the new casa grande has made him any happier. The housewarming party was the only occasion he took to show off his new status. Too bad it’s Tat who is showing him the way to navigate the obstacles to a happy life. Although, surely his time spent in the public defenders’ office, or was it the prosecutor’s office, should have exposed him to all walks of life and how ilife gets sliced.
Now give us your view on how Carlos will end up—or Nancy. Nancy is such an interesting character. Not that I like her that much either, but she’s definitely out for herself. I think she sees herself getting shut out of Carlos’ life and his little lies about Michelle will come back to haunt him.

Thanks, Anita. Fine job. Enjoyed your zippy "To be honest" recap. My fave: Michelle helps herself to his end of the conversation without his being aware. Carlos's IQ seems to fall the closer he gets to Michelle.

Lorena annoys me to no end, whether she's with Gus or not. Ric and Sofia, meh. If there is a PASL 3, the writers should focus on the cases, not the romances. But I would watch a time jump with Bobby and Vicki finally a couple.

Lorena annoys me to no end, whether she's with Gus or not. Ric and Sofia, meh. If there is a PASL 3, the writers should focus on the cases, not the romances. But I would watch a time jump with Bobby and Vicki finally a couple.

I don't want to see Juan go broke. He has worked his ass off to get where he is. He's learning about upscale restaurants and fine wine. He needs too to concerts, the opera, and art galleries. He needs to learn English and maybe another language. He needs a girlfriend who is headed in the same direction at the same speed. Tatiana will always be a couple of miles behind him.
I can't fault Victoria for thinking that Roberto hasn't changed. Guys like that usually don't.
As much as I think Carlos is getting his Karmageddon I don't think he deserves to have to share a cell with Alan. Carlos didn't kill anyone but he was careless about his own safety and that of others. His obsession with Alejandra was unhealthy and he should have removed her photos from his office when El Ciego pushed his boundaries out the door. As for Alan, he can't blame Carlos for his own laziness and resultant envy of Carlos' greater success.

WOW, It'd be great to know if here in the US we have the equivalent of a "juicio de interdicción" for a person with Alzheimer's or Parkinson's and can its validity be overturned in the courts, well I guess the courts can overturn and disagree about EVERYTHING.
Without it being a spoiler, now I can say what a CAD, cheat, and liar Adrian is with his false statements to obtain a visa in order to circumvent the law (that he now espouses) in order to stay in the USA. Boy, together with hiding his marriage from Victoria, he makes such promising husband material — NOT.

I still like the unconventional storyline (focusing mainly on the law not on romance) and hope there is a third season! This novela deserves one, where only LRDS did, IMO.

I don't see Adrian as a cad. There is more to this story but he took the easy way out when his back was against the wall.
My understanding about people who are in the US illegally is that these days they're not so much walking over the southern border as overstaying student or work visas. Had he not gotten a dream job offer he probably would have returned to Spain for a while. Maybe he could have talked to the hiring manager and requested help to enable him to extend his stay and he might have fallen in love with someone else and wouldn't be in our story.
Also, this is a situation that got resolved by a means that would have solved two other situations in the story: Diego's and Fanny's. If Diego and Kate had been married he wouldn't have been deported (We think) and if Fanny and Janet had been married and Fanny officially adopted Carla she would not have lost her to the nasty homophobic grandmother.

Nina--You came roaring back, despite the lost comment earlier. It's always a good idea to "copy" before you publish, just in case--especially when you pour your heart into your columns of advice to the wicked as well as to the good folks!
Carlos has certainly done his best to keep his hands clean--he is adverse to touching dirty things--but as a lawyer, I'm sure he's heard of co-conspirators. He's certainly aquiesced and encouraged, nay ORDERED Nancy to do some inexcusable criminal acts, suborning witnesses and bribery and conspiring with a narco-tafficker to beat Alan within an inch of his life. I think Alan has had his anvil crush him. Now it's time for Sonia to step in and isolate him from the rest of the prison population and get him to SING his little heart out to avoid life in prison.
I'm not entirely sure how "cooperating" with the prosecution works in Mexico, but I've seen enough Dateline and 48-Hours to know that in the U.S., it works. You can avoid long prison sentences by implicating others. OTOH, Alan committed a pre-meditated act of murder on an innocent girl out of jealousy and envy, hoping to incriminate his cousin and leave him with the whole enchilada. I'm glad to see that aspect of his plan unraveling. There was nothing accidental or in a fit of rage for Patricia's or Tellez' killings to save him from a good long sentence.

Well, as I see it and not being a lawyer, Alan's crime involved only two murders (Patricia and Téllez) and the erroneous, but satisfying) jailing of his cousin, Carlos.
Carlos deserved to be locked up anyway for cheating so blatantly on Ale (on their wedding night nonetheless). His association with El Ciego eventually lead to her father's kidnapping, and ultimately, her own death. Plus, the shady paperwork at his law firm and shady dealings with clients should be prosecutable. If I remember correctly, he was the one responsible for Alejandra's shooting at the restaurant with El Ciego; and her subsequent death, because he used information that Ricardo gave him in a moment of anger. So now Carlos has a new "thigh hopper", Michelle, and his sick love for Alejandra is out the window.
Carlos crossed the line way back when. At a minimum, Carlos is associated with:
(1) a known narco-traficante and mass murderer (El Ciego); (2) he defended all El Ciego's murdering delinquents while they were in jail. If I'm not mistaken, I think Sonia picked up on this but not Vega & Ass.;
(3) he also defended neighborhood vigilantes hired by El Ciego;
(4) El Ciego, a client who let it be known, without any qualms, shame, or shyness, that he wouldn't hesitate to kill anyone for any reason whatsoever;
(5) And same client was responsible for Alejandra's death.
IMO, Sonia should make a deal with Alan, the lesser of two evils IMO, and lock Carlos up real good, where hopefully, a jail mate will bash his pretty face in and turn "pretty boy" into something less than pleasing to the eye. I've never like JG's looks since 'Acorralada'. However, he was a believable bi-sexual in 'Sortilegio'

After the success of 'Amar A Muerte' and the difficulty in extending the novela beyond Season 1, since AB is killed off, the producers have plans to spin-off a second series concentrating on Valentina and Juliana's love affair.
Does anyone know the best way to encourage Televisa to produce a second season of PASL??
