#54 – Part 1 of 2

Two Months Later

Mariana has been on the campaign trail with Gerardo. She wants to go see David. Gerardo tries to prevent this, but she gives him a withering look and leaves.

David seems to have taken 2 months to finish his big Alejandro Gaitán article. At this rate he’ll starve as a journalist.

Gerardo is with Felipe reading the article. It pretty much says that the romance Gaitán had with a well born young woman might have been the reason he ended up in prison accused of double homicide. Gerardo goes nuts, thinking it will reflect on his D.A. cred (Ya think!).

Josie counts her chickens too quickly, telling Felipe he’ll take Gerardo’s place as the next President. [God help Mexico!] She seems smart most of the time, but this is delusional. Felipe couldn't run my yard sale.

Cayetana returns. She says she’s going to destroy Vicente.

Gerardo is fuming, driving a big Caddy, when a car pulls up and shots are fired. Looks like he’s shot in the stomach, and he passes out on the front seat. A passing motorist is calling for help.

Josie starts ordering Felipe around, planning to be the power behind the throne. She orders him to Casa Villareal to “take charge of things”.

Ale comes to tell David and Mariana about the attempt on Gerardo’s life.

Paulina works on her knife throwing skills. Amaranta admires.

Josie is at the hospital annoying Mariana and the Count. She says something about things not having been right since Alejandro Gaitán killed the Aguilars 20 years ago. [She herself saw the crime and knows this was not true.]

We see Caye admiring the poster for her movie, and I learn a new use of the word cartel. [Seen enough narco stuff to not know the word also means poster or sign.] Ric is overjoyed to see her back.

The doctor tells Mariana and David to go home; the operation will take hours. Ale talks with David, trying to tell him not to feel guilty. David says his life would be easier if his father were like Don Joaquín.

Ernestina allows David and Lorena about 2 minutes together before hustling the girl off.

Ale tells Memo that Josefina is working on ginning up a political career for Felipe. And she’s doing it with Harrison’s money. [Maybe he’s not broke after all.]

Vic shoots the assassins he hired and has Xiao clean up.

#54 – Part 2 of 2

Felipe is getting more and more puffed up. He’s trying on Gerardo’s office for size and snooping when Ramiro walks in, not having heard about the attempt. The guy the President sent to investigate the attempt on Miguel Aguilar walks in and proceeds to interrogate Ramiro. Ramiro is as cool as a cucumber.

Pedro is going whole hog on greed. He’s buying watches and other things with Vic’s money. Ric tries to rein him in. Later on, we see him gloating over his jewelry. We see that he’s kept that red velvet bag in his closet.

Caye does a good acting job being cordial to Vicente when he shows up at Casa Conde.

Vic wants the Count to not have the raffle today, because of the shooting. But Ale insists it will happen.

Mariana finds Felipe trying to open a filing cabinet drawer. He tries to demean her as a stupid woman. She calls him un patán. Smirking, he shows her the article about Alejandro and the woman he was involved with, seeming to know the truth.

Ale sings the same song to Ric about “a bit more time” before the hammer is dropped on Pedro. Ale needs him to continue ruining Vicente.

As Mari reads the paper, we see flashbacks of their relationship all those years ago. David peeks around the corner and sees how emotional his mother is.

Dolores’ wedding dress doesn’t fit. She’s pregnant. I’m actually sorry for her. Considering the Felipe→Pedro bloodline, it doesn’t look good.

David follows Mariana and spies on her while she brings flowers to Alejandro’s grave, talking to the grave and crying. Pretty sure David is onto the truth.

Vic comes to see Josie and tells her they’re toast if Gerardo recovers. She has to escabechartelo (literally pickle, but colloquially kill someone). He says he can’t be seen at the hospital, but she’s above reproach.

Mariana tells Pau who Dávalos is.

Antonio is finishing things up with Dylan. He’s looking for his liquidación (severance pay). Harrison is again very insulting to him and asks for the keys, which Antonio hands over.

Josie sneaks into Gerardo’s hospital room, pulls out a very big hypodermic, and is in the process of putting its contents into Gerardo’s saline drip. We don’t see if this happens. I think it’s too soon to kill of Sendel.

"CONDE" HIGHLIGHTS DISCUSSION
EPISODE#54:
Novelera: Howdy from the Alamo City CarayCaray Family. Enjoyed reading your recap of last night's episode. Lots of crazy happening.

*2 month jump I see: With Ultimos Semanas, we're getting closer to the Gran Final.

*Bratty Dolores will abort the baby you watch.

*Buji Joise plotting to make Jackass Felipe as the next President of Mexico: OMG! .

*Cayatena is back in SJ: What could possibly go wrong ?

*Harrison insulting Antonio again: What else is new ?

*Ernestina is ANNOYING: Busting up David & Lorena for the upteenth time. How long before the lovebirds are together again ?

Kat in SC: Slippery Pedro is determined to keep looting everyone's money. Gut feeling he will kill again. Once again: Ricardo & Lucrecita better WATCH their backs.

Conde
Novelera, you manage to paint the picture of everything with much fewer words than me. Thanks for the lottery explanation. I didn't understand that part (as I was looking up what rifa meant).

I also was surprised it took 2 months for David to write that article. Perhaps he's doing the janitorial work at the newspaper, after all he did offer.

That doubloon or whatever Pedro picked up at the murder of Ruben will most likely be his downfall. Did you notice that Ale died not want Ger to die (yet,). He needs him alive to prove his innocence.

I wonder if they are setting up a scenario for Mariana to be the scapegoat in Ger's assassination attempt.

David definitely knows now that Mari is the high society love interest.

Poor Delores. That pregnancy was predicted by the patio.

Yes, that knife throwing will definitely come in handy for Paulina.

So is Antonio also on Vic's payroll at the bordello? I guess he has been working 2 jobs for a while.

I wouldn't rule out Dylan being Conde's accomplice. It may be his money that is being used. Poor Josie, he's getting stronger rather than weaker with his "cancer".

Conde

Novelera, I always love reading your snappy recaps peppered with your humor and wisdom.

Dylan seems to be large and in charge . I wonder if he got his noche de boda . Jo would have hated that . She likes her young Antonio.

Vic is sweating more and more . How will he react to his favorite daughter being pregnant? He wants Pedro's money, so he will have to cool down and accept it.
You can tell that Caye wants to be a part of Vic's downfall. Carmen should be part of it, too.

I am amazed at the massive wardrobe that was made for his show, especially all the women's fashions . Wow. Susan

"CONDE" HIGHLIGHTS DISCUSSION
Susan: Something tells me Harrison is involved in the sinister conspiracy to framing Alejandro. Just a hunch.

Kat in SC: Wake me up when Slippery Pedro's downfall begins. PS: Ricardo & Cayatena will be likely endgame. I'm still worried about both Paulina & Carmen making it alive in the end.

Amaranta will keep nagging until she figures out Joaquin is really Alejandro. Cannot wait for Scumbag Villarreal to figure out David is the pestering reporter LOL.

conde

Wow, novelera! Many thanks for stepping up to do this recap! I'm in awe of how concise AND terrific it is. As always, I'm grateful for the Spanish vocabulary and delighted with all your delightful comments. I especially enjoyed "She seems smart most of the time, but this is delusional. Felipe couldn't run my yard sale."

Humor aside, I can't imagine how Josie thinks that Felipe could possibly be successful in a run for the Presidency, given his total lack of any relevant experience. Not to mention his not having a winning personality.

So we have yet another "Almost" moment, with El Conde about to tell Cayetana about who he really is when Memo interrupts with news of Gerardo's shooting. Has anyone been counting how many "almost" moments we've had?

Hmmm...did El Conde buy Vicente's hotel so he could gain access to the fake papers? Oh well, a few million pesos here, a few million pesos there.

I imagine few of us on the patio were surprised that Dolores is pregnant. I'm afraid I don't share your sympathy for her. She has always gotten on my nerves. I can't recall a single good thing that she has done. I'm wondering how the telenovela will deal with this pregnancy. Another miscarriage? Or, since she is not exactly an admirable character, an abortion? Or will she turn out to be a loving single parent? Um, no, I don't think so.

conde

I still don't understand why Ale is having this raffle.
I wonder if Ger has figured out who tried to kill him and how he will retaliate . Will he send his minion after both Jo and Vic now ?
Susan

Conde

Gracias, Novelera. Super recap and vocab.

Nope, Gerardo can't go out this way. He's got much more drama to give.

Cayetana returned so soon that it's almost like she never left.

Goodie, Pau is definitely gonna get a chance to use her knife throwing skill!

I concede Ernestina is a pain about the kids' love, but I wouldn't want my daughter hooking up with a Gerardo offspring either. It'll be a happy day for her when Ale is revealed as the real dad.

"CONDE" HIGHLIGHTS DISCUSSION
Juanita: Bratty Dolores will abort the baby. You've heard it here first!

Niecie: How long before Jackass Vic goes after Cayatena ?

Cone

Poor dumb Dolores. She’s going to lose it when she finds out her Marquis is a thief who can’t steal.

Interesting idea, Kat, that Dylan is part of team Conde. He doesn’t seem to have another purpose here except to annoy Josi, which is pretty great in itself. He must know about Antonio. We don’t really know what Pau told Dylan, do we? Normally I’d be annoyed atDylans whole attitude, that the MAN is here now to take over the business that Josi has been running just fine, more or less. But she deserves him.

Who owns the bordello bar? I thought Antonio owned it.

K

conde

Thanks, all. Wrote that one really quickly and AGAIN didn't put in the closing keystrokes to stop the italics after I'd put in a word in Spanish.

Kat, I'm pretty sure Antonio is the owner of the bordello. He's always shown sitting at a big desk. ITA about the red pouch and gold coins being Pedro's downfall. He has lots of $$$ from Vic, but that pouch and contents almost seem like the stereotypical trophy murderers are shown possessing. Thanks for mentioning that Ale said he needs Gerardo alive to prove how he was railroaded.

Susan, I also love the 1950's wardrobe, especially that the women seem to always wear hats in public. When my mother passed, I brought home a collection of her hats. I've used some of them as part of a Halloween costume.

Juanita, thanks for mentioning las escrituras (fake deed) that Vic used to prove ownership of the big hotel in D.F. That might well be the reason, but something tells me he wants to gift Caye with the hotel her father owned.

Someone here mentioned that one raffle is unlikely to help ALL the residents of San Jacinto, and buying a ticket would decrease the income of the poorest residents. He mentioned each person buying a ticket once a month when he first described the raffle. It wasn't clear but I wondered if he meant a new raffle every month, increasing the odds. Maybe we'll find out tonight what the big raffle idea means.

Recap is coming shortly. I want to thank Kat and novelera for their very helpful recaps. I had little time to comment this week.

conde #55 part 1

Brilliant disguise Josie, no one will recognize you with those sunglasses. A nurse comes in and interrupts her before she can dose Gerardo. Josie claims she’s in the wrong room and quickly leaves.

Vi is panicked by Dolores’ admission. If your dad finds out, he might kill the three of us! Dolores isn’t taking it so seriously. Vi responds, what will your father do if he finds out you ate the cake before the party? Dolores thinks they can say the baby is premature. Vi asks her if anyone else knows. Dolores shakes her head no.

Antonio brings Dylan the latest sales reports and says today is his last day. He wants his severance pay, but Dylan wants the office keys first. Antonio was going to give them to Josie, but he hands them over.

Dylan tells Antonio that Josie insisted they give him another chance. I’d like to know what she sees in you, he asks, why does she want to keep you around? Something you don’t see, Antonio replies, something rare around here. Loyalty and trust. [He’s right in general, but wrong about applying it to himself.] Josefina knows I’d cut off my hand before betraying her. [And she’d cut something else off if he did.] Dylan says he’ll make Josie happy. Antonio thinks he’s getting his job back. Not so fast.

Vi tries to figure out a plan for Dolores. Tere walks in and hears the news.
Dylan puts Antonio in charge of the warehouse. Antonio balks, this job is a step down. He adds, no one knows the liquor business as well as him. That was before, Dylan answers, I’ve familiarized myself with everything. From now on, I’ll turn the distillery into a profitable, modern business. New machinery is arriving. You know nothing about that. Dylan’s final offer: take it or leave it.

Vi sits and waits in Vic’s office. Temptation gets a hold of her, and she opens the safe. [guess she paid close attention when Vic opened it. I don’t think Vic would have given her the combo.] Vic catches her and accuses her of stealing. Vi says she just needed a little more money for shopping and got tired of waiting for him.

Vic shouts, who paid you to investigate me? Vi doesn’t like his shouting. Lower your voice! Such a tough guy, yelling at women! Go yell at your mother! Vic slowly steps towards Vi. She knows what’s coming and she looks to escape. No escape, Vic had locked the door. She begs him to stop and throws a glass at him. He lunges and starts to choke her. She begs for her life.

Amaranta is visiting Ramiro’s woman. [I don’t remember her name.] She looks very pregnant. It’s been a while since they’ve seen each other. Ama says she doesn’t sell tamales anymore, she’s selling raffle tickets. Ama waves the tickets and says the baby will bring luck. The woman says she doesn’t have that kind of luck. Besides, she doesn’t have the money to buy one. Ama says she can pay her back later and gives her a ticket.

Vic continues to choke Vi and she continues to plead. Xiao enters the office and causes a distraction. Vi is able to make a run for it and Vic sends Xiao after her.

Feilpe is drinking and has a flashback to a convo with Josie. “Have you no heart, mom? Sofia is dead because you and I killed her.” Felipe snaps out of it and whispers, I didn’t kill her, I didn’t kill her. Pau enters the room and asks if he’s okay. Better than ever, he replies, I just spoke to my friend, Pantoja, the party secretary. He’s asking me to take Gerardo’s place while the situation is sorted out.

conde #55 part 2

Pau doesn’t understand. Felipe mocks her, then explains, if Gerardo dies, I’ll be the party’s next candidate. You’re lucky, you might become the First Lady of this country. Pau puts on the act, touches Felipe’s face and says, our daughter would be so proud of you.

Desperate Vi comes to see Caye. I missed you. I came as soon as I heard you were back. I need your help. Vi hugs Caye but Caye pushes her away. Caye scoffs, are you desperate because you spent all your husband’s money and need more?

Vi had hoped that Caye might have thought things over. She tearily asks, when will you believe I’m your friend? I’m desperate. It’s a matter of life and death. She pulls the scarf around her neck to reveal Vic’s handiwork. He might kill me next time. Caye looks but her demeanor and words are cold. She asks what happened.

Vi says Vic was out of control, like a wild animal. If Xiao hadn’t distracted him, he would have killed me. I can’t stay with Vicente. I need your help. I’m thinking about my son. I need fake IDs for me and Luisito. I know the Count can help. Please, I’m begging, talk to him.

Caye flatly refuses. I’m not asking Joaquin for that. It’s not my place. You married Vicente for his money. This is your problem. She turns to leave and Vi grabs her. Vi pleads, do it for my son, please. I don’t want him to have a father like Vicente. I’ll do whatever you ask. Caye looks like she might take her up on that offer.

David asks Mari if there’s word on Gerardo. Not yet. He shows her his article about Ale. She’s already read it and she loved it. David says he enjoyed the research and learning about Ale. He wasn’t a supposed murderer, but a good man. An honest and hard-working foreman that everyone respected.

David says he was surprised to find out that Ale had a relationship with a high society lady. Mari stops smiling and excuses herself, she has to put Gaby to bed. He asks her to wait. I need to know, he says, I saw your reaction when you read the article. I followed you to the cemetery. I saw you crying at Alejandro Gaitan’s grave. Are you the woman who had a love affair with him?

I’m not judging, David assures her, but I need to know. Mari admits it. I was that girl, but it was many years ago. My life is different now. David asks in wonder, why didn’t you tell me when I was going to write about him? It’s a very private story, she replies, a story that belongs only to him and me. Were you in love with him, he asks.

Mari sighs and takes David to sit with her. She begins the story. I met him at the SJ fair during the festivities for the Virgin. He saved me from a runaway bull. After that, he rescued me from a horse that bolted. It was down by the river that separates the Gallardo and Villarreal estates. We fell in love. Our story only lasted a few months but… she sighs again… until he was arrested for the Aguilar murders, and I lost him forever.

David asks, you couldn’t do anything? No, she replies, if I had done something, it would have made things worse for him. If people found out, it would have been over. David realizes that’s why his mom believed Ale was innocent.

No one’s been able to find Vi and Vic is angry. He sends Xiao out again to find her. Vic seems worried.

Vi is at Antonio’s. He’s upset at what Vic did to her. Only a coward would do this. How could he? [I guess that’s one positive about Antonio. He doesn’t beat women.] Vi says she can’t stay, she’s going to escape. Uh oh, Josie shows up. Vi hides. Why is the door locked, Josie asks, are you with someone? Antonio counters, I’m busy, why are you here?

conde #55 part 3

Amaranta tells Ale she gave the ticket to Ramiro’s wife. Ama hopes the woman is not part of Ale’s plan. Ale assures her that nothing will happen to her. When Ama leaves Ale tells Memo that the wife and child are not to blame for Ramiro’s crimes. I want to make sure she’s protected because he will probably end up in prison.

Josie lets Antonio know she had to beg Dylan to allow him to stay. Antonio relates that Dylan humiliated him by offering him the warehouse job. It only for a few months, Josie says, there’s nothing to gain by acting so worthy.

Antonio reminds Josie that Dylan was supposed to be under her control, but it seems he’s controlling her. I have to make him believe that, Josie answers, but you know well that nobody controls me. He’s old and sick and in a few months he will be dead. [haven’t seen any sign of illness, have you?] Antonio becomes defiant. He can live 100 years but I’m not going back to the liquor store.

Josie accuses Antonio of jealousy. He says he’s not in the mood and asks her to leave. She starts with the usual put downs. If it wasn’t for me... blah blah… everything you own… blah, blah… Antonio fires back, I earned it myself. You know how? By keeping your bed warm by the sweat of my brow. Josie’s comeback—you talk like one of your cheap prostitutes.

Right, Antonio replies, that’s how you treat me. I’m done being the fool who’s always there to solve your problems and your fill your needs. It’s over, find someone else to put up with you. Josie threatens, for the last time, don’t challenge me. He tells her to get out and walks her to the door. She shouts, you’ll regret this!

Caye has softened and goes to Ale with Vi’s plight. Vic tried to strangle her—she saw the marks. You and I know he’s capable of anything, she says. Ale agrees to help Vi and get the documents she needs to escape. Caye expected Ale to help. The war is with Vic and not Vi. But Caye also has a plan—I help Vi and she helps me. I’ll ask her to find the original deeds to Hotel Altamirano. Ale thinks that’s too dangerous.

Caye changes the subject and reminds Ale that he was about to come clean with the truth before word came about Gerardo. Ale nods.

Vi is worried about Antonio’s’ safety. She thinks they should escape together. Antonio considers it for a split second. Then he says it’s crazy. I’m not going anywhere with Vic’s kid. If it was just you, it would be different. He has businesses and he has a very important friend.

Good for you, Vi says, I’ll go with my son. She asks for her money. He doesn’t have it, he invested it. She is frantic. She’s furious. Who gave you permission? Calm down, he tells her, I’ll give it back to you. She shouts, when? You know what you are? A thief, a lowlife, just like everyone else! He doesn’t like being called a thief. He claims he’s not like Vic. She smirks, you’re not the same, you’re worse. She leaves.

David and Mari talk about how Ale was framed. David says witnesses swore they saw Ale commit the murders. Mari supposes they were paid to say that. Dad was the DA at the time, he says, didn’t he realize they were lying? Mari gets up and turns away from David. She doesn’t have a good answer for that.

David has more questions. Did you meet my dad when you were with Alejandro? No, Mari replies, I’ve known you dad since I was a child. We became good friends. He was always kind and respectful to me. He asks, and that was enough for you to marry him? Mari doesn’t want to discuss the past anymore. It’s too painful. Alejandro and his mother died because of it. Let them rest in peace. David gives a halfhearted nod.

conde #55 part 4

Vi gives Vic her tearful excuse for where she was. She just needed air after what happened. He tells her to stop talking. He’s calmer now, [barely] and he gives her the standard abuser’s apology. He admits to going overboard but he wouldn’t do these things if she didn’t provoke him. [sorry, he’s too disgusting to quote, even though it’s good Spanish vocab.] All she must do is obey him and they will be happy. And he needs to know where she is all the time. She promises not to do this again. He lets her go home and asks Xiao to take her.

Ale has brought Caye to his plotting room. She sees the gallery of rogues. She’s shocked. All these people… I never imagined… Josefina? Felipe? He nods yes and says, they all took part in framing me for a crime I did not commit. I’m Alejandro Gaitan. She’s stunned. He continues, I’m the man they blamed for the Aguilars’ deaths. My mother died of sadness. You can imagine the pain I felt upon my return to SJ and discovering what happened to her.

Caye says, what those people did was unspeakable, Joaquin… Alejandro? He picks up—I went to Europe with Memo and adopted the surname of my noble friend. That’s why I’m Joaquin de Montenegro. Caye realizes he came back to settle scores. She asks for his forgiveness, she judged without knowing. [well, he withheld.] Now she admires him more than ever. [Let’s hope it stops at that.] She vows, for you, for my father, and for your mother, we’re going to put a stop to all those people.

Felipe practices his speech for Josie. He flubs it and stops. Josie advises, if you make a mistake just keep going. Don’t make it obvious. Relax. Pau walks in and says she was listening in and liked it. She encourages him. He just needs a little more practice. Josie interrupts to ask Pau what she wants.

Pau wants their opinion of the dress she’s wearing. She wants to accompany Felipe to his political events. Felipe says she looks nice. Pau lays it on thick. I want to look perfect for you. Do you think it’s okay if I wear this to accompany you to the radio station?

Felipe looks at Josie who subtly shakes her head no. Felipe tells Pau it might be best if he goes alone. Don’t you think people should see us together, she asks. A united couple. Especially since our daughter’s passing. Maybe Josie was at first suspicious, but now she says Pau is right this time. It will show that Felipe is a family man. People like that. Pau can come along.

Ramiro surprises his woman at home and tells her to pack up because they might have to leave. She asks if this is about Gerardo. Everyone is talking about it. Ramiro thinks if Gerardo dies, they will blame him because he is the head of security. The woman defends Ramiro’s rep. You’re a good person, hardworking. You did nothing, I trust you. [I feel bad for her.] She gives him a comforting hug. [I can’t get over how Ramiro is a different person with her.]

Mari and Nanny listen to Felipe’s speech on the radio. Nanny comments on Felipe’s assumption that Gerardo is out of the picture. Mari says Felipe [really Josie] has his sights on being the next president.

Gaby wonders when her father will come home. He needs to stay in the hospital a little longer, Mari says and tells her to write him a letter.

Josie visits Ale to talk about Felipe as a possible replacement for Gerardo. Felipe has lots of support, including the current president. Ale asks if she thinks the party will choose Felipe. She thinks it’s possible and came to invite Ale to join in supporting Felipe. She assumes Gerardo must have offered Ale a quid pro quo to get his support.

conde #55 part 5

Ale lets her assume. Josie is ready to offer a better deal. Ale chuckles, interesting… a deal consisting of? Josie promises easier ways to expand business, tax exemptions, customs clearance, whatever. Ale “accepts” and extends his hand to “the mother of the next president”.

Josie’s next stop is Vic’s office. He scolds her for not finishing the job on Gerardo. Josie tells him about the nosy nurse. She can’t do anything about that now. Gerardo’s got too much protection. But maybe they don’t need to finish him off. She tells him Felipe is lined up to replace Gerardo as the candidate.

Ooh, Vic mocks, all of a sudden, like that? Josie says she’s been setting this up for months, bribing politicians and seeking powerful allies. He’s suspicious—did you try to kill Gerardo to help your son? Or are you taking me for a fool to betray me later? Josie answers, if you don’t believe me, ask the Count. He assured me of his support.

Vic is shocked. Was he involved in this from the beginning? Of course not, Josie replies, he doesn’t know what we did. I convinced him it would be beneficial to him, just like it could be for you. Vic says if Felipe allows him to continue his business, he has no problem supporting him.

Remedios tells Carmen she’s packed and ready to go. They are in danger from that scoundrel, Vicente. I came for you, she says. Let’s get out of here. You’re in danger, too. Carmen says, I can’t leave. My daughters are here, and they need me more than ever. I don’t care what happens to me. I have to stay and get them back. Uh oh, Leticia has been eavesdropping. Remedios continues to beg Carmen to leave with her.

Antonio asks Pedro to return Vi’s money. The owner asked for it. Pedro smirks, she picked a good time because I don’t have it. Tell her to wait. Antonio gulps, then notes that Pedro has a gold watch and a luxurious suit. He has earnings from the brothel. Pedro calmly says he’s got wedding expenses. Antonio’s not buying it. Vic is paying for the wedding.

Pedro warns Antonio not to mess with him or he will make him disappear. Antonio grabs a knife and waves it in front of Pedro. Do you think I’m stupid? You wouldn’t be the first person I’ve killed. Respect me and pay up. Pedro calmly sips his drink. Antonio continues, I’m not stupid like Ruben. Don’t try to convince me you didn’t kill him.

Leticia snoops around the atelier. She finds a scrapbook with clipped articles about Dolores and Teresa Garcia.

Ric asks Caye, now that you know the truth, what do you think about the Count? Caye replies, if I were in his shoes, I’d do the same as Alejandro. Ric reminds her they must call him Joaquin. Caye wonders why the Villarreals blamed Ale for the crime. Clear up your doubts with the article, Ric answers, let the Count tell you the details. He asks her if she’s still in love with the Count. Love isn’t like a flu that goes away, she quips and leaves. Tell me about it, Ric says to himself.

conde #55 part 6

David tells Ale about his discovery that his mom was the high society lady in love with Alejandro Gaitan. He found it strange to see his mom crying when she read his article about Alejandro Gaitan. Ale perks up. David says he followed her to the cemetery and found her crying at Alejandro’s grave.

Ale covers. Maybe she was just moved by the story? David says his mother confessed that she had a romance with Alejandro. Did she tell you, Ale asks in surprise. Did she really love him back? Yes, David replies, she told me they met when he saved her. Mom said they loved each other very much. Ale looks pleased. David now understands why his mother supported them—Sofi and Javi, Lorena and him.

Ale flashes back to telling Mari he would come that evening to speak to her dad. It wasn’t to be.

David continues, after Alejandro was captured, my mom never heard from him again. She found out he died, and she married my dad. Ale says maybe it was for the best. What could a foreman offer the daughter of a ranch owner? David is not so sure. He has a question that he couldn’t ask his mother. If when she married my father, was she still in love with Alejandro Gaitan. Ale has to lean back into his chair. Only your mother can answer that, he replies.

Mari is in Gerardo’s room and a buzzer goes off. She shouts for the nurse. Gerardo has no pulse. The nurse calls for the doctors. The medical team springs into action.

And we are out.

EPISODE#55:
Dondi356: Snooping Leticia is going to indirectly get Carmen & Remedios killed.

Conde

Very thorough Dondi. I didn't realize Remedios was leaving town also, I thought she was just encouraging Carmen to go.

I chuckled at Josie's disguise also.

I also thought Vic sent Chau after Vio to finish her off, not just make sure he showed her home. If Vic truly is keeping tabs on her, his henchmen are not doing a very good job of it.

Are we close enough to the end that Ger could actually be dead?

¡Muchísimas gracias! dondi, for this spectacular recap. You've captured everything clearly and with lots of delightful side comments.

I loved your snarky "Brilliant disguise Josie, no one will recognize you with those sunglasses." That was exactly my response as well. I'm a little disappointed that they can't/won't provide a more believable disguise. Then again, I suppose the stupidity of Josie's "disguise" provides some welcome laughs for those of us on the patio.

I was surprised that they showed part of Antonio's conversation with Dylan in the previous episode (though possibly with Antonio in a different jacket??). Was this just bad editing?

Ama seems to suggest that this is Rosario's wife's lucky day. So does this mean that she will win some money? We've seen that Ama's predictions are almost always right. And will Rosario's wife be greatly in need of the money because Rosario will either be dead or in prison?

Wow, I've never liked Cayetana, but even so I've never seen her quite so nasty as she is to Violeta, who supposedly is her friend. Yes, eventually she offers to help Violeta, but wow, what a perra she showed herself to be.

I loved the scene with Mari and David, where David asks her about her experience with Alejandro Gaitan. Her face lights up with joy as she tells David about her experience. I imagine that someone as sensitive as David would certainly notice this.

Was anyone else worried when Vicente tells Xiao to take Violeta home? I half expected that Xiao would take this to mean he should kill Violeta (as Vicente had ordered earlier, I think).

I very much enjoyed your comment when Cayetana says she admires Ale/El Conde now more than ever: "[Let’s hope it stops at that.]" Amen! Though her later comment about love not being like a flu that goes away suggests that she may still be in love with Ale/El Conde. Arrgh.

Dondi, why did you say "Uh oh" when reporting that Leticia has been eavesdropping on the conversation between Carmen and Remedios?

I suspect it may still be a bit too soon for Gerardo to die, but perhaps not. An episode or two of Felipe making an ass of himself as a candidate for the Presidency might be fun. Then again, perhaps Gerardo doesn't have to die for that to happen. He just needs to be too weak to continue campaigning.

Have a good weekend, everyone!

Donde, wow, thank you for bringing us every detail. It must have taken a lot of time to give us every moment .

" she ate the cake before the party." ..I'm writing that down ...ha.

There seemed to be no reason for Caye to be so nasty to her supposed friend Vi. What has Caye been up to since she left the Conde's mansion? .Vi was clearly desperate , and she showed Caye the bruises on her neck.

Then, poor Vi goes to retrieve her money from Antonio ,and he doesn't have it. At least he tried to get it back from that pompous poser Pedro.

Things are getting complicated. Susan

"CONDE" HIGHLIGHTS DISCUSSION
Susan: I have ZERO sympathy for Violeta. All signs are pointing towards a DEADLY end for her.

Big question is whether or not Slippery Pedro goes down since we're in Ultimas Semanas ?

Kat in SC: Wake me up when Cayatena gets her memories back. I like to see jer taking down Jackass Vic.

La Familia
Donde, do you when this show is starting ? I am interested in watching another dizi. They definitely have a different vibe than the Mexican telenovelas . I am still watching " Amor Prohibido.". Susan

Fantastic recap, dondi! Loved your asides on the idiocy of some of these characters. I thought the same about the sunglasses and wish I'd said it on Thursday night!

I wasn't quite buying Vic being THAT murderous about Dolores' pregnancy. Surely there were lots of 7-month babies in the 1950's, and his spoiled daughter would still, he thinks, end up a Marquesa.

I think K said something about this, but I'm also getting an overbearing white guy vibe from Dylan when he deals with Antonio. But, of course, Pau has been filling his head with tales. I don't think she's dared hint about infidelity, but he thinks Antonio is skimming money.

Yes, this was not Cayetana's finest hour the way she treated Violeta. We've heard how desperate she was in Europe, living on the street. I doubt she'd have resisted an opportunity to be a "gold digger" if it presented itself.

Violeta hid because Antonio insisted. I think she'd have spit in Josie's eye.

Looks like Ale plans for Ramiro's wife to win the raffle. Hope they make this raffle stuff clearer soon. Only one winner? Making things all right for that women kind of cheats the rest of the poor people in San Jacinto.

I absolutely LOVED Antonio finally cutting off the sex supply for Josie. Of course, I have to admit having a bit of a sweet tooth for Uriel del Toro, in spite of knowing all his character's bad deeds. I first saw him as a good guy in Al Otro Lado del Muro

Why would Vic keep the original deed to the hotel in D.F? I know, I know. Telenovela logic.

The whole Violeta money thing is a bit confusing. She actually did make a killing in the market, at least once. IIRC she gave the money to Antonio, who gave it to Pedro, who gave it to Ale. Seems like she'd have been less outraged to discover he'd done that again. [A lie, but still.]

Amen on "standard abusers' apology".

And, yes, Ramiro is a total pussycat with his wife.

When Vic said something about being OK with Felipe if he could continue with his business, I remembered that he was an "early adopter" in the drug trade in Mexico.

Pedro is riding for a very hard fall. I think Ric said something a couple of episodes ago that he seemed to have convinced himself he really was a marquis.

I'm pretty sure Violeta will make it to the end. She and Carmen have had some nice chats. I can see the two of them mothering all of Vic's children after he's eliminated.

Leticia eavesdrops. Wonder how many eavesdropping scenes I've seen in 20 years of TN watching. 500?

I laughed at your disguise comment too. Wouldn’t wearing sunglasses indoors be the opposite of stealth?

I thought Caye looked like she was softening towards Vio when she saw the marks, but was trying not to. She was trying to be colder than she is. But she definitely doesn’t owe el conde an apology! He’s the one lying to everyone. He should be asking for her forgiveness.

So Pedro is spending Vio’s money instead of investing it with el conde? And his big dumb ego thinks he can get away with it? Antonio is right. He’s no Ruben. I look forward to his takedown. Even Antonio earns a better ending than this guy. Maybe.

Glad they set up Ramiro’s partner to be taken care of. Amaranta’s different dress and accent were a better disguise than Josie’s sunglasses, cute as they were.

Thanks everyone! Interesting comments. As Susan wrote, “Things are getting complicated.”

Kat, it didn’t cross my mind that Vic wanted Vi killed, but with his track record… “Are we close enough to the end that Ger could actually be dead?” I’m wondering if Gerardo will be revived long enough to make a deathbed confession of all his crimes. Ha, call Padre Ale to hear it!

Juanita, “Was this just bad editing?” Maybe. And characters are transporting all over the place.

“Dondi, why did you say "Uh oh…” [about Leticia] Don’t know why, but I had an initial bad feeling with her reaction. See Steve’s comment: “Snooping Leticia is going to indirectly get Carmen & Remedios killed.” Eavesdropping has consequences, sometimes good, sometimes bad. Maybe I worry for nothing. I loved your comment that Gerardo doesn’t have to die for Felipe to make an ass of himself.

novelera: “I wasn't quite buying Vic being THAT murderous about Dolores' pregnancy.” He’d be furious but it’s possible he might only want to rush the wedding.

“…overbearing white guy vibe from Dylan..” I’d add rich and entitled to that description. Not that I want to give Dylan a total pass on his behavior, but I can’t totally blame him after his suspicions have been aroused. A husband should sit by and do nothing to protect his marriage and business? Besides, Josie and Antonio are not innocent victims. ps. I like Uriel del Toro, too.

I’ve been a Caye supporter but her treatment of Vi was appalling. Ama had commented that Caye looks and sounds like the Count now. novelera writes, “…not Cayetana's finest hour… I doubt she'd have resisted an opportunity to be a "gold digger" if it presented itself.” Caye was on the verge of hypocrisy here. Did she forget a rich count came into her life? She didn’t turn him away and fell in love. The difference is Ale is good, Vic is evil.

K, your comments on Josie’s disguise gave me a chuckle. “But she [Caye] definitely doesn’t owe el conde an apology! He’s the one lying to everyone. He should be asking for her forgiveness.” ITA!

About the raffle: is Ale intending to sell tickets to “deserving” people and share the pot?

Ay, Pedro!

OT - La Familia

Hi Susan, I only saw it's starting in October. I'll be watching.

Conde

Dondi, super recap. I love that this TN has plot twists that don't fit into TN bingo, BUT that means I miss stuff when I watch. Thanks for all the details.

I loathe Pedro. He is so smug and entitled and has no feelings for anyone but himself. On the other hand, Antonio has feelings for Josie (dang, it's been 20 years with her) and feels bad about not being able to give Vio her money. Antonio is going to hell, but maybe he'll do a good deed before he goes.

Nice to see the Count soften toward Mari as he listened to David tell him about his mother's romance.

Vio certainly has the gift to keep her head when she's sinking in quicksand. I thought she would break when Antonio said he didn't have her money at the moment. She flashed anger, but didn't lose it. I can see Vic blaming her for not watching Dolores close enough.
