Thanks so much, dondi, for the very entertaining recap. I’m right there with you on being not so quick to absolve Bedri of what a self-serving brat he was for ¾ of his time in the dizi. But I must admit the actor is doing a great job of becoming a sweet guy almost like magic.

Kiymet’s emotions make no sense to me. She 100% rejected Bedri, her bio grandson, but listens to Ceyrek’s delusional comments about being Ilyas’ son. I suppose she rejected Bedri because she seems to hate Nedret. BTW, who was the mother of Serap and elder son whose name I’ve forgotten?

Did they say “bucket list” in Turkish? I found it interesting that that crossed over into Spanish, another example of how many words in English are moving into the Spanish language. Everyone in every language now seems to use OK on the regular.

It is a bit hard to swallow the complete overhaul of Hulya. I enjoyed your “new and improved” phrase, dondi.

I’m with Juanita. How in blazes could Ceyrek have gotten a video of that fight in the gym. I know they’re going with every room in Turkey riddled with cameras, but how would that little weasel have gotten access? I’m right there with the concern about Cihan. He’s going to hate himself for having let Ceyrek live and seems ripe for a sacrifice.

I just think it’s too cruel for a SECOND difficult pregnancy for Devin. I know there are women who experience more than one problem, but sheesh!

I also really thought the scene of Devin talking about being a mother at nine was so affecting. We saw that right from the beginning when Devin has the fateful meeting with Aslan on a plane to “rescue” Yagmur, who was only goading her sister.

Why are Turkish graves always shown as mounds? Sadly, I’ve been to a couple of graveside gatherings of family. Here a big hole is dug when no one is around. And the family watches the loved one lowered inside a casket but not the dirt filled in. I attended one funeral of an immigrant from Mexico with whom I had worked. In that one the machine came in and completed filling in the dirt while the priest spoke some words. Somehow our graves end up flat.

I will do a recap tonight.

#71 - El Bucket List - Part 1 of 3

We return to the marina standoff with Babur’s guys and Aslan’s guys pointing guns at each other. Aslan waxes philosophical, saying he’s given up killing but these dogs have still come to bother him.

Babur sneers that Aslan came to his gym first, but he does put away his gun, as do all the other guys. Then Babur insults Bedri, saying that Aslan speaks for him. He goes on to say that Aslan’s out of money. [I have a vague memory that Bedri, when he was Rotten Bedri, was planning to double cross Ilyas and deal with the Albanians.]

Hulya has arrived. It seems like Kiymet just looks out the window all day because, like always, she comes out to confront Hulya. Hulya offers her condolences.

Aslan tells Babur that it’s not so smart of him to show up with the same crew he beat the crap out of the last time. Babar keeps smiling throughout the whole convo. [This guy has the most punchable face I’ve seen in a while. He says: “I’ve returned the favor, putting dos hoyas en tu techo (two holes in your ceiling). He tells Bedri he has one day to pay him 20% and they’ll be partners. [Huh? I would have thought the reverse. Aslan gave Bedri the marina and Babur would need to buy in to have any share at all.] Babur makes a threat if this doesn’t happen. Bedri basically tells the guy to shove it. The guns come up again. Aslan tells Babur that his guys need to learn that, if you pull a gun, you’re meant to shoot. Aslan begins to count to three.

Hulya tells Kiymet that losing Ilyas means that she no longer has to watch over him. Kiymet doesn’t back down. Hulya says she’d put a bullet in Kiymet’s forehead if she were the old (unimproved) Hulya. “You’re alone and pain is eating you alive. Let this pain teach you a lesson." Kiymet replies that the pain of losing a child doesn’t teach you a lesson; it turns you into a killer. Hulya says that, if she’s thinking of blood, she, Hulya, won’t have pity. “If you harm a hair on the head of any of my family, it will be the old Hulya who destroys you.” Kiymet says that maybe it would have been better if Hulya had killed her. [I agree. And she didn’t even pull her gun for emphasis!]

Babur backs down. He tells Bedri he thought they’d share the cake, but your cousin is feeding you to the lions.

Bedri and the guys think Aslan should have shot him, but Aslan is now a pacifist. He orders Iskoc to find out everything about that guy. Iskoc replies that an Albanian won’t give up that easily.

As Hulya comes out of Kiymet’s den, Ceyrek tells her never to return. She looks at him like he’s something she scraped off the bottom of her shoe. I notice lately he’s been wearing that grey scarf Ilyas always wore. He says that Kiymet is his mother.

#71 El Bucket List - Part 2 of 3

Aslan asks Bedri why he’s trembling like he has un cálculo renal (kidney stone). “Speak!” Bedri replies it’s as uncomfortable as passing a stone. He would like Aslan to ask Yagmur’s mother for her hand (for Bedri). Aslan calls this request an abuse of good will. He seems to sort of assent.

Aslan gets Iskoc and Turgut to check the holes in the roof (from Babur’s gunshots). He leaves Eko and Bedri alone. This is a nice scene. Eko wishes Bedri happiness and pats him on the back.

Yagmur tells Devin she’s very worried about Nedret and Bedri discovering her past. [Nedret already has a guy looking into this.] Devin tells her not to worry; it’s in the past. [William Faulkner: “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”]

Iskoc and Turgut talk. Turgut, calling Bedri the boss, says that Bedri is going to propose to Yagmur. Iskoc gets irritated with Turgut for gossiping.

Devin and Yagmur have come to see Nese. As usual, she’s ready to be difficult. She prohibits Devin from having her baby. Devin turns it back on her, saying Nese’s only thinking about herself. “I’m thinking, for the only time in my life, about myself; and I’m having this baby.” This whole scene shows how Devin is finally continuing to process how she’s put herself last in that family.

Devin tells Aslan she’s made her decision. He follows her inside, insisting the child won’t be born. They talk over each other for quite a while. Aslan is annoying, but in a way he’s right. They surely could adopt and not risk her life. It’s his insistence that she do what he wants that’s annoying.

More scenes of Aslan, Devin, and Asuman trying to placate Seher. Aslan thinks Asuman’s slushy has so much sugar that he could become diabetic. Aslan tells Seher he’ll take her on a flight to Asana to knock two items of the bucket list: an airplane ride and the dessert she craves.

As they’re getting ready to leave, Turgut says something to Aslan about Seher’s bucket list. Aslan accuses him of being a gossip.

#71 El Bucket List - Part 3 of 3

There’s a very uncomfortable dinner with Nedret, Nese, Yagmur, and Bedri. Nedret is in favor of this match. Nese figures it out and blows up. Nedret gets insulted by Nese’s refusing her golden boy. Nese ends up saying it’s because of having another child married to a mafioso. “Look what happened to Devin!”

Hulya has arranged to meet Cihan in some bar. Before she arrives, Cihan goads some guys into beating him up. This is odd, but it seems he wants physical pain to offset his emotional pain at losing Serap. Hulya arrives and shoots at the ceiling to stop the beatdown. There must be a lot of leaky roofs in Istanbul.

Seher is very nervous but eventually is happy to be on the flight. [Sorry, I’m not writing down every single word of Devin and Aslan comforting Seher.]

When Hulya brings Cihan home and puts him to bed, Asuman asks if this means they’re reconciled (Hulya and Cihan). Nedret tells her to quit gossiping.

Now we get a very cute scene. Asuman brings Turgut her version of the Adana slushy. Then she starts telling him about Hulya and Cihan. Turgut gets closer and says he’s noticed Hulya changing, even warming to Devin. Then they talk about Bedri and Yagmur. Asuman opines that Yagmur is un flacuchenta (poor skinny thing), while she herself spits fire and passion from her pores. They really get into it. It seems Asuman won over Turgut by letting him indulge in gossip and doing the same herself.

In Adana Seher says she had her first kiss with Seyit in this very restaurant. [Assume Seyit was her husband.] He composed a song for her. Aslan, Devin and Seher all get granizados (slushies), and Seher sighs with pleasure, saying it’s the same as ever. Seher then says that she has only one bucket list item remaining, meeting her great grandchild. Aslan says that things are complicated.

Seher seems completely in her right mind. She says that she saw too many sins, pretending to be deaf, blind, and even mute we well. She’s tired. Yusuf and Ibrahim and their sins are an unbearable weight on her. Hiding the truth is worse than death. “Don’t be like me. Start a pure, clean family. Raise your child well. A mother doesn’t want to be separated from her children. Don’t do that to a mother, separate her from her child.”

On that we end. There’s about a 0.01 chance that Devin is going to abort. The question is whether all the Soykans will be alive at the end.

Moni's adoptive parents were in their 50's when they adopted her. They likely died of an illness or old age. They did not die at the same time. Francisco's parents died in a MVA when he was young. Just to clarify.

Thanks Novelera. I can always count on your recaps clearing things up for me. I thought Cihan was hoping he would be beat to death as he seemed to call to Serap. Reminds me of Fred Sanford of Sanford and Sons clutching his chest calling to his wife ( whose name I've forgotten, Louise maybe) saying this is the big one I'm coming!

Thanks VERY much, novelera, for yet another superb recap. As always, I came away from reading it understanding a lot that I'd missed. And I very much appreciate your including some useful Spanish, especially "un cálculo renal."

Wow, the New Hulya almost sounded like Devin the therapist when she was giving advice to Kiymet. I doubt, though, that Kiymet will take that advice.

I was a bit unsure why Bedri requested that Aslan ask Nese for Yagmur's hand (on Bedri's behalf). I think Bedri said he didn't have a father to do this, but of course he does have a supportive mother. So is the male imperative so strong in Turkey that a young male friend can do this, but a female parent cannot?

Yagmur tells Devin that she's worried about Bedri and Nedret finding out about her past. I definitely share that worry. And I loved the Faulkner quote you cited!

I have very little use for Nese, but I think she makes a good point about not wanting Yagmur to marry a mafioso. She cites what happened to Devin to support her position, and for once she's rather convincing. Of course, I do hope Yagmur marries Bedri, but I'm not sure I'd feel that way if my (non-existent) daughter wanted to marry someone in the mafia. (Since we're not supposed to discuss politics on this blog, I won't say what other category of person I wouldn't want my child to marry.)

Venganza #66

Back at the funeral.
*Fernanda lets Alfredo know she is on to him and his involvement with the Ferrerro family deaths.
*Gabriel gets the news from his dad about her suspicion but that she has no proof. His job is to get Brenda to sign some papers tonight putting Gabriel in charge of the Ferrerro firm
*Moni tells Fernanda she doesn't want expensive gifts from her. Fernanda says throw it out or whatever you want to do with it.
Paty tells Alfredo that she saw Roberto and Fernanda kissing at the office a while back. He is mad she is just now mentioning it.
* Ignacio and Claudia arrange a date night.
* Ana wants to ride to the mausoleum with Sebastian and Moni. Elisa and Francisco are too lovey dicey for her liking, and obviously she doesn't want to ride with Dad and Paty nor Gabriel and Brenda.
* Marcelo is quite taken with Brenda. Fermin and Francisco teases him about her.
*Ana tells Joseph she was overwhelmed the night they didn't do it as he was so, so ( big, use your imagination as she didn't specify but she looked below his waist as she mentioned it. She says give me 2 days. I'll be able to try again. ( Steve, will she fall off the wagon? I hope not. Just do it with the lights off to start.)
*Erika and Fermin wonder about Claudia and her newfound devotion to prayer and church. They wonder if it is because of Miguel and Rafita. Not sure if they have connected the dots that the 2 arranged the hit. I'm guessing not.
*Alfonso is being discharged soon. Still no sensation in his transplant. Doctors say it will return slowly. Tania has offered to put him up at her place. I think he refused.
*Fernanda warns Brenda at the funeral that the del Pinot's hated her father. What was with those crocodile tears. Tha last thing your father wanted was for that family to get their hands on his business. Brenda looks thoughtful at this warning.
* Elisa tells Brenda not to rush into signing over the business to Gabriel to run. Brenda doesn't feel up to the task. Elisa asks have you spoken to the VP. Not yet. If Brenda does not sign Gabriel should understand if he truly loves her.
*Lawyer comes to the del Pinot estate to counsel Brenda and bring the forms Gabriel wants her to sign. He says, wait a minute. There is a very lucrative offer on the table for the company you might want to consider. That would honor your father's wishes to keep your in laws and husband away from his business.
* Most likely the offer came from Fernanda'. She had a meeting with the lawyer before he went to the del Pinot's. I was hoping Marcelo would offer his services to Brenda and advance his chances with her.
* Mirna had some advice throughout but she mostly was Fernanda's shadow. Personal assistant to a T.

Excellent recap, novelera! Great Faulkner reference. It fits the entire dizi.

To answer your questions from Wednesday, Ceylan and Devin said “bucket list” I think Aslan understood but the others had no clue what that meant. “Why are Turkish graves always shown as mounds?” I think it might be part of the religious custom. I’ve seen wood boards placed on a slant in the grave before the shrouded body is laid to rest. I think the body is not supposed to lie in the soil. And the body has to face the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca. Then they have that simple wooden marker for a while.

About the confrontation at the marina: Babur, the “punchable” Albanian, was asking Bedri to pay him “protection”, since Aslan no longer had the means to protect the marina. He told Bedri they could be friends “dost” if he paid, or enemies “düşman” if he didn’t.

I enjoyed the Asuman and Turgut scene. Even better in Turkish.

Yes, Nese had a valid point about marrying into a mafia family. No way to respond to that. Nedret and Bedri should have no right to judge Yagmur’s past.

“The question is whether all the Soykans will be alive at the end.” Probably not. I think Cihan won’t survive. I’m wondering if Seher will complete her bucket list and see the baby. I have a suspicion she might die happy in her memleket (hometown, homeland) Adana. But I think AsDev and the baby will be okay. The Turks can’t be that cruel… or could they?

Friday recap will be up on Saturday.

Gracias, Novelera. Super job. Thanks for the vocab bonus.

Nope, one can't blame Nese for not wanting another mafioso son-in-law. But Aslan and Bedri are different. Aslan has wanted out (and worked toward it) since the dizi started, but I'm not sure what Bedri plans for his future. Too bad Nese (or Yagmur) didn't ask him.

Easy for new and improved Hulya to give Kiymet advice about losing a child since she's never lost one. I don't know how this will play out, but that little visit did cause Hulya to meet Ceyrek.

The Albania head is a funny guy. He and Aslan seem to have some respect for each other.makes me laugh. I

Thanks, all. It looks like we're mostly in agreement that Cihan won't make it to the end. The ones who really will miss out are the young'uns. I have noticed how loving he is toward his niece and nephew. By the way, thanks, dondi, for mentioning the three movies Nejat made, starting with "Ten Days of a Good Man". I found them on Netflix. Who knows if I'll have time to watch them all. It was hard to find anything about the actor in English, but I did find this description of his career:

https://onedio.co/content/nejat-isler-a-shining-star-of-turkish-cinema-from-humble-beginnings-to-international-acclaim-24988

Kat, you may be right that Cihan hoped to have the four guys in the bar take him out of his misery. And, not yet sensing the danger from Ceyrek and Kiymet, he might just want to, as you said, join Serap in the afterlife. Don't know what the Islamic viewpoint is on suicide, i.e., whether Serap is deemed to be in the good place.

Thanks, Juanita. Because we've become inured to (more or less) liking Aslan, it does need to be said that Nese has a right to be fearful of Yagmur joining her sister in such a high-risk environment. It's just that the woman is SO annoying.

Dondi, thanks so much for clarifying what Babur wanted. Sometimes, as much as I back up the recorded episode and listen carefully, I just don't get what they're trying to say. Yes, protection to let your business operate without "accidents" is a hallmark of all mafiosi. I'm also pleased that my lip reading isn't that bad and that the Turkish characters really did say "bucket list" in English.

Niecie, good point about Hulya never having suffered the loss of a child. Kiymet recently lost her son and TWO grandchildren. But I still can't stand the woman. To me she seems like the worst kind of "traditional" woman. She didn't seem to mourn Serap. No, it's only the male lineage that gets her vengeance going. ITA about Aslan and Bedri deserving some credit for trying for legitimate businesses.

"VENGANZA" HIGHLIGHTS DISCUSSION
EPISODE#66
Howdy from the Alamo City CarayCaray Family.
Kat in SC: Thanks for your recap of Thursday night's episode, I see things are escalating non-stop with 29 more episodes to go & at the rate this is going, I will be shocked if this cracks 100+ episodes. My personal thoughts on Thursday night's episode.

178.) Crazy Goldie Locks picks the perfect time to show up at the Ferrero funerals & applauds (plus mocks) Alfredo & Gabriel are a wonderful Oscar-worthy acting performance.

179.) Like I mentioned earlier, who needs Eugenio & Crazy Goldie Locks to wreak havoc when we've got Alfredo, Gabriel & Alonso doing their best of increasing the Body Count.

180.) Brenda: I hope you protect yourself because Gabriel not only wants your money, he wants you DEAD too.

181.) Slick Alonso will continue being Slick Alonso.

182.) Marcelo & Brenda as a potential couple: Good luck with that. I think Tania or someone else will be a better match for him.

183.) Monica doesn't want anything from Crazy Goldie Locks: Can you blame the Redhead?

184.) I'm surprised Sebastian has no clue of how evil his father & brothers are & their crimes against humanity.

185.) Claudia is still an annoying nagging idiot, who needs some more Karma.

186.) Date night between Igancio & Claudia: What could possibly go wrong?

187.) Ana: I've still got a bad feeling she will relapse at some point before we reach Ultimo Capitulos.

188.) Gullible Elisa & the Uppity Gardener (Francisco): Fast Forward because I'm so sick of both of them.

189.) Halimacandy: I seriously hope you're wrong about Erika losing the baby or her life. Fermin & Erika are in danger too because the villains are escalating things to the maximum of chaos.

190.) Somebody needs to get Cordell Walker from "Texas, Walker Ranger" to connect the dots in the Ferrerro assassinations. Big question is how long before Paty joins the Body Count?

fam2 #72 part 1

“Don’t separate her from her child. Listen to Devin.” Will Seher’s words get through to Aslan?

Yagmur and Bedri talk in his car. Nese won’t change her mind about their relationship. He says he will kidnap Yagmur. No one can decide for us, he tells her. Yagmur starts to talk about her past, her life in Izimir, when she cut ties with her family. It was a difficult time. He interrupts her—I know. She’s surprised.

Nedret’s guy brings her the report on Yagmur. Is there anything bad, she asks. There are things you should know, he replies, read and decide for yourself.

Bedri says he knows what happened and tells Yagmur, forget about it. I know it hurts you to remember what happened. I don’t want you to be sad. I want to marry you but that doesn't give me the right to judge you. In this world, who is free of sin? No one. [especially the characters in this dizi.] The problem is the world, it keeps rotting. He asks, do you still want to be with me? Of course, Yagmur replies. Then that’s enough, Bedri answers, I just want to be in your future. I don’t care about your past. Bedri puts a ring on Yagmur’s finger.

Saffet and crew arrive at the marina, pretending to be workmen. He tells the guard that Aslan called about a problem. The guard goes to check and Saffet knocks him out with a hammer.

Hulya goes to Cihan’s room. He’s ready to take off but she wants to talk. It’s about the country estate. He’s suspicious. Hulya says she wants to build a housing complex for abused and battered women—Serap Koruzade Bozdoğan Kadın Konuk Evi. Serap will never be forgotten. She hands him the plans. Cihan is speechless.

Hulya tells Cihan that her necklace represents her 4 children. You are one of them, son. I know I can’t change the past. I could give you endless excuses. We could talk for a long time, but that doesn’t matter now. She takes his hand. I just want to tell you that I am sorry. Cihan acknowledges, eyvallah. He leaves.

Nedret calls Yagmur and asks her to come see her right away.

Outside the house, Cihan shows Aslan Hulya’s plan. Aslan says, do you finally realize she’s starting to change? Maybe. Hulya comes outside and tells Aslan she met with Kiymet. Aslan’s ready to take back his words about Hulya’s change. He’s ticked. Hulya says he’s right but says that Kiymet is on her own. She only saw a young man there. Could be an orphan. Cihan takes note. Hulya leaves.

Aslan turns to Cihan. That young man she mentioned, it’s not Ferman, is it? You killed him, didn’t you? Cihan lies and said he did. Aslan leaves and Cihan makes a call—find out if Ceyrek is in Istanbul. Cut to Ceyrek digging a grave at the cemetery.

Isko and Eko give Aslan the update on Babur and his men. Babur stayed at the gym but he sent some guys to the auto body shop with a van. Aslan senses something is up. Turgut gets a call from the docks. The boat owners and guests are complaining. The marina stinks of excrement. Aslan spots Saffet’s van leaving the marina. What’s that van doing there?! Stop them!

Yagmur meets with Nedret. Yagmur hesitantly begins, I spoke to Bedri but I also want you to know. I lived in Izmir a few years ago. During that time… I faced situations… Nedret says, no need, I know everything. An angel shouldn’t have to explain herself. You just showed me how much you trust me. Yagmur hangs her head. Don’t be ashamed, Nedret tells her, there’s nothing to be ashamed of.

fam2 #72 part 2

Bedri thinks Babur planned this even before he threatened them. Turgut and Eko caught the van and the guys and bring them to the dock. (The van says, Wastewater Maintenance and Repair.) Turgut takes a handwritten banner from the van— “This is only the beginning. You will sink!” The perps are taken to the carpentry shop as per Aslan’s orders.

Nedret continues, no one is free of sin, much less when life is so unfair. That’s not how life works. Life pushes you to the ground. Nedret apologizes for invading Yagmur’s privacy. She adds, I see you as a daughter. Teary Yagmur is thankful. Nedret explains that she needed to know what people could use against Yagmur. This will allow me to protect you until the day I die, she says. Yagmur gives Nedret a hug.

Devin walks in on this convo. Yagmur leaves and gives Devin a hug on her way out. Devin smiles, I told you there was nothing to fear.

Aslan goes to beast mode again. He punches Saffet and yells, I gave my wife a promise. Because of you I’ll have to dirty my hands again! He tells the amigos to take Babur’s guys. He intends to pay Babur back in kind noting Babur said that when he shot the ceiling… now it’s our turn.

Devin tells Nedret, I want to keep the baby, but I’m not the only one who gets to decide. She asks Nedret about Bedri’s birth. Nedret says a neighbor came and helped her. It was difficult, Nedret recalls, Bedri wouldn’t come out. He was stubborn then too. I was in labor for hours. But when he came out and he was placed on my chest and I smelled his scent, I forgot all my pain. My son turned my pain into happiness. Nedret apologizes for being insensitive. [Well, Devin asked.]

Nedret continues, motherhood is a gift from God. But to be a mother, you need to be healthy, or the baby will suffer. [Devin should understand that, being Nese’s daughter.] You need to think about your health, first. Devin thanks Nedret. Now she needs to go to the hospital.

AsDev are at the hospital. Devin wants to make a short detour before they see the doctor.

Hulya and Nedret are in Seher’s room. Seher has questions for them. Before Death takes me, I’d like to hear your answers. I filled your hearts with anger. She turns to Hulya, affet beni--forgive me. Don’t try to excuse my mistakes. I made you suffer for years, and you never turned your back on me. Allah razı olsun—May God bless you.

Seher turns to Nedret. My Nedret, my moon faced one. I stole 40 years of your life. I separated you from your family and handed you over to a horrible man. I never listened to your shouts. Affet beni. None of that matters now, Nedret replies, you gave me life. I’d suffer another 40 years if it meant we could reunite again. Seher asks for their blessing—"helal ediyorsunuz?” Both Nedret and Hulya answer, helal olsun.

Turns out that Devin wanted to sit outside the Delivery Room and watch as people receive the good news about the birth of a baby. The people joyfully run to the nursery window. Devin tells Aslan, we can experience that, too. Don’t take that from us. Aslan replies, if anything happens to you, I’ll die.

No one will die, Devin assures him. Seher is right. Do you think I’d let anything bad happen to our child? Do you think I’d want him to grow up without me? I can feel it, I know it. I was shot and our baby survived. Don’t you think that’s a miracle? I need you to believe me. Nothing will happen to me. She really pressures him.

fam2 #72 part 3

Preparations are underway to ask for Yagmur’s hand. Nedret tells Yagmur to make the coffee. She will take care of Nese. She also reminds Yagmur to put salt and pepper in the groom’s coffee. Nese is a sourpuss. The atmosphere is a bit tense. And here comes Yagmur with the coffee. Devin helps serve. Aslan jokes, give Bedri raw chicken instead of salty coffee. He deserves it.

Nedret tells Nese, people say coffee leads to long relationships. Nese replies, whatever… and I’d like to say a few words before we have our coffee. Bedri is a good and kind man. But I’m worried about my daughter. I don’t want to constantly worry about her well-being. Can you understand?

Babur gets the payback from Aslan. Saffet and crew were thrown into the wastewater and brought to the gym.

Back to engagement night. Nedret says, Nese Hanım, I’m not here to take a DIL, I’m here to take my new daughter with me. I’m not asking you to hand over your daughter. I’m asking you to let me be another mother for your daughter. These two love each other and they want to start a family. We can be the mothers of the family they want to start.

Aslan starts the standard ceremony. It’s obvious why we are here. By the will of Allah, and the order of the Prophet, we ask for the hand of your daughter, Yagmur for our son, Bedri. Nese replies, Nedret Hanım, you spoke very well, and it was nice, but… [a very long but] it’s hard to raise a daughter. Good luck! Nese has given her blessing and it’s time to kiss the hands. Bedri still needs to drink his coffee. He takes it like a groom worthy of his bride.

Aslan gets a text… the package was delivered.

Babur’s guys are washed off in the middle of the gym. [Aren’t there showers on premises?] There was a note that came back with the stinkers. “This is the end! Now you’re in the sh*t, Babur.” Babur is furious. He starts beating one of the men with brass knuckles.

Babur calls Aslan. Aslan goads Babur. Babur warns Aslan to watch his back from now on. Devin comes over to Aslan—is everything okay? Aslan lies to her.

Ceyek prays at Serap’s grave. Cihan arrives and shouts out—hey! No one keeps their promises anymore. What are you doing?

AsDev give Seher a match to complete her collection. That’s the newest member of the family. Seher is thrilled, may God protect you and your child! Aslan asks Grandma, what’s next? Seher replies, a henna party. For Yagmur? No, Seher says it’s for her. I’ve seen all I had to see. I will go to Heaven in peace. Everyone objects to Seher’s death talk.

Ceyrek says he left but returned due to an emergency. Cihan questions, what emergency? My cat, Ceyrek replies, I came to get my cat. Cihan asks, then what are you doing here? I wanted to pray for Serap Hanım before I left, Ceyrek answers. Cihan is played again. He warns Ceyrek, I never saw you, okay? And you haven’t seen me. This is the second time, do it again and you’ll end up here. Get out.

Ceyrek starts to go but turns to Cihan. Ah, I had something to do over there. It’s done. Cihan takes a look. It’s the open grave with a wooden marker “Aslan Soykan”. Cihan realizes his mistake too late.

fam2 #72 part 4

The family is with Seher in her room. They cross off the last item on the bucket list. Ceylan says they can make another list tomorrow. The others leave the room and AsDev remain behind. Seher holds their hands. I thank God for this day. It was great! I love you both very much. That love is returned by AsDev. They say goodnight and tuck Grandma in. Seher tells Aslan that tonight will be the best sleep of her life.

But Seher isn’t sleeping. In the middle of the night, she gets up, takes the matches from her matchbox and distributes them to each of her loved ones. We see her back in bed. I think she’s got the baby’s match with her. There's a closeup on family pics beside her bed. Seher closes her eyes.

In the morning, Aslan wakes and sees the match on his nightstand. He heads to Seher’s room. Grandma? She doesn’t stir. Grandma? Seher’s outstretched arm hangs over the edge of the bed. Aslan sees the baby’s match on the floor. He picks it up. He kneels beside the bed. Grandma… grandma?

Devin enters the room. Aslan takes Seher’s hand…wake up. He strokes her hair… Grandma? Sultana Seher? I guess everyone must have seen the matches, because they enter the room one by one—Hulya, Ceylan, Nedret.

Aslan continues to urge Seher to wake up. No use, Seher is gone. My darling Grandmother, Aslan cries.

And we are out.

Gracias, Dondi. You've delivered a beautiful recap. I'm always confused about the business maneuvers/sabotage, so thanks for detailing what the stink was all about.

Though sad, Seher had a lovely passing. She got a chance to be forgiven for turning her back on Nedret all those years.

I'm glad Yagmur can now relax about her past. Bedri came through for Yagmur, as well he should have considering the dirt he's done.

I hate Ceyrek duping Cihan. Cihan is too smart for this despite how emotionally wounded he is.

Dondi, thank you for giving us every detail of this episode as the Sh** hit the fan .

I am getting tired of the never-ending acts of revenge .

Ceyrek ( who is also Fermin ????) Says he came back because he had a cat emergency . The usually astute Cihan made a huge mistake letting him live. Surprise, the little twerp is digging Aslan's grave.

Do we have a count of how many people have wanted to kill Aslan? Its getting old . Will he survive to the end ?

I was surprised at how chill Nedret and Bedri were about Yagmur's past . Nedretvis a hippy dippy earth mother in this show. Wow.

Seher died in peace . I remember that when I was dating my hub , we'd visit his great grandma , a teeny , tiny slip of a woman , and she would say to me "I wish I could just close my eyes and go to sleep ." I was a teen and couldn't understand why she would want that .

And the new and improved Hulya ...okay, if the writers say so . susan

Dondi, thanks VERY much for this wonderful recap. It clarified some things for me, and I again was delighted with your often snarky asides.

I was rather surprised and quite pleased that Nedret was so accepting of Yagmur. I had assumed that when Nedret gets the report about Yagmur, and the guy who brings it to her says ominously, "There are things you should know, ...read and decide for yourself," Nedret would not be happy with Yagmur as her daughter-in-law. And when, right after reading it, she immediately calls Yagmur and says she wants to see her, I thought the worst.

As it turned out, Nedret really impressed me in this episode. She knew exactly what to feel and say to reassure Yagmur and to win over Nese.

The asking for Yagmur's hand confused me. Or, rather, what Yagmur and Devin wore to the ceremony confused me. Why would they wear identical long black dresses? And why wear dresses that show off so much of their boobs?

I was also surprised that when Aslan wakes up the next morning, finds the match, and goes to see Seher, he's wearing the same clothes he had on the night before. And IIRC, so too do all the other characters who join him in Seher's room. Were the camera people pressed for time and thus had to film both scenes one right after the other?

Oh well, I enjoyed the episode and I especially enjoyed your recap.

Thanks so much, dondi! As usual you gave us a beautifully written description of an episode that veered quickly between warm family moments and nasty vengeance ones.

Loved "especially the characters in this dizi" about how few of them are free from sins.

Wow! Hulya looks like she's making it to the end. Can't remember ever seeing such a complete change of character in a dizi/TN. Of course, Cihan thought she was trying to manipulate him about the land her former home was on, the one he outbid her for. And, yes, he was speechless about her choosing to honor Serap.

I thought the whole Seher part of the episode was very well done. Aslan didn't want to let her go, but she had a really lovely death. Living on would have been hell considering the doctors had diagnosed dementia and a decreasing quality of life. She got to atone verbally for throwing Nedret out and, it seems, arranging the marriage to the guy Bedri killed as an adolescent.

I'm trying to remember. Did they do that coffee ceremony in Hercai? I seem to remember some kind of a ceremony to acknowledge their engagement with practically the whole cast there.

Babur is the typical villain. He beats up his own guys for "failing him" even though there's no way they could have avoided their fate.

Yep. "Cihan is played again."

They kind of faked us out showing Nedret looking very serious upon reading the report on Yagmur's past. Of course, what really happened was perfect. Nedret herself had been a "fallen woman" and came back from that.

Thanks everyone.

Ha, what could Nedret and Bedri rightfully say? It’s good they chose not to be hypocrites.

Juanita, “… what Yagmur and Devin wore to the ceremony confused me.” “And why wear dresses that show off so much of their boobs?” Lol, they are “modern” girls. I’ve wondered about Devin and Yagmur’s wardrobe choices throughout the dizi. On the other hand, Kıvo’s stylist, his wife, dresses him well. And Turgut has worn the same outfit in every episode. Isko even commented on it. Maybe Asuman will get him to change it up.

novelera, “Can't remember ever seeing such a complete change of character in a dizi/TN.” Did you forget about Azize in Hercai? That redemption will live forever in my mind as one of the worst. I’m adding Hulya to that list.

“And the new and improved Hulya ...okay, if the writers say so.” lol, Susan.

“Did they do that coffee ceremony in Hercai?” Yes, twice that I remember—when the Aslanbeys asked for Reyyan and at the end when the Sadoglus asked for Azize (Ayse). “Asking for the hand” is standard in a dizi. Just like you must have hospital, courtroom, and/or jail scenes. Pretty much the
same as TNs.

My poor Cihan…

Do do- Kivo is Aslan, correct? Good job by his stylist wife, but I’ve really been impressed with Devin’s coat collection. Half her wardrobe is fashionable outerwear. Makes me wish I lived in a more coat-appropriate environment. And had the budget of a telenovela. And looked like her.

And thanks for the Turkish insights. It’s fun watching a new culture and getting the inside scoop!
