Will do a quickie on Velvet tonight. I'm off to a two-hour Meetup in my town. It's meant to be an all-levels Spanish conversation group. A friend alerted me to it. I would prefer one hour, but I'm intrigued to see if it works for me.
Ana again tells Alberto she’s seeing someone. She thinks the selling of less expensive clothes in those stores would be a good way to raise money. Kat was right; it’s not a grocery store.
Barbie with the razor-sharp cheekbones insults Clara and tells her she’d never be invited to Mateo's house. Later, after another Clara hissy fit, Mateo invites her to an Air B&B, pretending he’s a biker. What’s up with his house? We see him in the daytime, so it can’t be a vampire’s lair.
Alberto whines to Mateo about Ana and the other guy.
Emilio is so happy to have Isabel in the U.S. He’s behaving like a happy teenager. But later on, the hint we saw earlier when she was still in prison proves true. She’s dying of a heart malfunction. She wants a job at Velvet to be around Alberto. [Ah, for Pete’s sake why doesn’t she just come out with it and tell him who she is?]
Max hooks up with Pepita, one of the seamstresses. Yikes, she takes a video of him in her bed and giggles about it to another seamstress the next day. Who does that? And, of course, she drops her phone and Blanca sees it.
Lorenzo, the unbearable new head of design, turns up his nose at the cheaper line for Velvet. So, Alberto turns the design into a contest for the seamstresses.
ONE MORE TIME Alberto shows up at that rooftop terrace when Ana is there. I’m starting to want her to push him off.
Ramon’s mother shows up worried about her son.
Carlos shows up at Velvet. [This guy doesn’t do a thing for me. He grins too much. I saw him for about a week in Sed de Venganza and felt the same way.] Rodrigo spies him around a corner and then tells Ana his real name is Aristizábal and that he’s a big cheese in NYC.
Lorenzo shows up for his dinner with Blanca. She pleads feeling ill.
Dr. Handsomepants is kind of a jerk. He’s all over Marga at the bar. Pedro returns from his time away. I now remember he went to see Peter, so that’s where he was. Peter and Marga embrace.
Carlos more or less says he’s concerned about people caring for him because of his position and wealth. He enjoys being “normal” and hanging out in Queens.
Francisco shows up at Luisa’s. [Here we go again. This building is supposed to require a key card to get in, but people just wander in all the time.] He hints Ramon won’t ever appear again. He’s come with something for Luisa to wear for their big night. He shows her a video of Michael being watched by a guard and later she comes to him in a sexy dress.
Lorenzo removes Blanca from her job as head of her group [doubtless spite for her not going out with him] and gives it to Marga.
Cris is wheedling Alberto for a double date with Ana and her new boyfriend.
That was a bare bones Velvet recap since I was with the Spanish Meetup. Apparently 10 said they'd show, but only 5 did. There were three reasonably fluent speakers, including yours truly. There was a very nice woman with not really fluent Spanish but a terrific personality. And, of course, the woman with one of the worst accents I've ever heard talked 75% of the time. She left about a half hour early. The Meetup was supposed to be 2 hours. The rest of us had a very nice time, with give and take, honest interest in each other, where we've traveled in Spain and/or Mexico.
Novelera, you got the important stuff. I'm with you on the actor playing Carlos. I suffered through the entire Sed De Venganza show as I recapped it. He did nothing for me either. At least in this show he'll likely remain in long pants. Venganza, being set in Miami, had him wearing shorts a lot, even though he was a rich business man in that one too.
So whoever wondered if Alberto having the fainting spell being a red flag, is probably right. He and his mother likely have similar heart defects.
And I was right, Carlos is the head of the mercantile that Velvet will expand there line into. Ana gave a valid reason to Al. Most people can't afford our clothes, I personally shop at this other chain as do most of the world. I agree with her and Mateo's assessment. But why in the world they didn't go this route with Al's aunt I'll never understand. I still feel she was shoved aside with her ideas because she is a female. Although I think her market is online shoppers.
I really hope Christina stays her mostly sweet self. It would be nice to have the girl that loses the guy be a good person and not a vindictive witch. Of course I'll hope for a great guy for her if al and Ana are end game.
I wonder if Mateo is super rich and has a mansion somewhere and that is why he refuses to bring Clara home. Either that or a crazy mother in the attic! Barbie seems to know his roots.
Novelera, thanks VERY much for this excellent "bare bones" recap. Actually, I disagree with your calling it bare bones. It's got lots of meat and muscle in it!
I agree with you about Carlos. I was happy to see that Rodrigo outed him (which explains why the cast list I saw had Carlos' last name listed as Aristizábal). So is Rodrigo still in the running? Or will he remain just a good friend? Of the three (Alberto, Rodrigo, and Carlos), I like Rodrigo best.
Wow, Francisco is even slimier and more dangerous than I thought. Do we have a category worse than "sucks"?
And yes, I agree that "Dr. Handsomepants is kind of a jerk." I was hoping that he would provide Marga with a better choice than Pedro, but it's beginning to look like Pedro the Lovable Klutz will be it.
It may be that Alberto may share his mother's heart condition, but even if he does, he's young and able to get good medical care. (Heck, even this late in the game, Isabel might be saved by good medical care.)
What Isabel might NOT benefit from is working at Velvet, where she'd be seen and perhaps recognized by Gloria, who would love to see her dead and is probably willing to make it happen.
Sorry I went missing this week. Nothing serious but annoying: heat wave, power outages at work and at home, spotty internet. I need to catch up again. Thank you to the recappers and commenters. I can post Friday recap/highlights for Jefa and Velvet that will be up on Saturday.
Gloria’s family are in a safe house thanks to Estrada.
Duque comes to Luisa’s hotel room after Nacho kicked him out of the cartel.
Nacho goes to Gloria’s house. Everything is gone. He realizes Gloria betrayed him.
Nacho watches the Mexican president’s televised speech. The tunnels are gone and now there’s a big international effort to go after the cartel.
Duque and Luisa watch the speech. Duque gripes that Nacho never believed him about Gloria. He vows never to return to Nacho. Luisa disagrees. She says he needs to go back. The best way to destroy the enemy is to keep him close. Duque plans to dethrone Nacho.
War is coming. Gloria, Estrada, and family and friends talk about their next steps. Glo talks about Nacho’s obsession with her. He won’t rest until he makes her pay. Glo wants to go after Duque. Yadira says Duque still thinks she’s on his side. She can get close to him. Gael insists that she stay away from Duque. Violeta agrees. Glo asks Yadira if Duque did something to her.
Laura tries to contact Glo and friends. No answer. Fercho tells her they will be late for their wedding.
Nacho continues to put together the pieces of Glo’s betrayal. He realizes she’s with Estrada. He smashes a mirror with his head. He takes a shard from the mirror and starts to cut his throat, but he chickens out. [too bad.] He looks at pics of Glo and says, if I go, you’re coming with me.
Yadira tells Glo that Duque raped her. He threatened to kill Gael. Glo blames herself. Glo tells Yadira to stay away from Duque; she will make him pay.
Laura and Fercho find out they needed an appointment and a ton of paperwork to get married. [duh.] They have to wait 15 more days.
Glo calls Laura and fills her in.
Nacho calls Duque. Luisa advises, stay calm and speak to him. Nacho supposes Duque’s seen the news and wants to meet. Duque reminds Nacho he threatened to kill him if he saw him again. Nacho says, don’t play dumb. I’m calling because I was wrong. Duque responds with “I told you so”. Duque says he’ll come and “we’ll see.”
Duque asks Luisa if she knows where Glo is. No, thank goodness. Duque says Nacho will destroy everyone around Gloria. Luisa looks nervous.
Erna does what she does best—worry. Mati does what she does best—hopes that everything will be okay. Justice will prevail. Erna says she’s learned there’s no justice. Mati answers, then divine justice is all we have left.
Nacho is drinking and looking at a projection of Glo on a screen. He flashes back to the fruit seller days. To their date. To his marriage proposal.
Nacho calls Gloria and she answers! How could you have done this after all I’ve done for you? What have you done, she replies, lied to me, treated me like a puppet? I know you hired Mateo, and you never stopped working with Duque. You ordered the deaths of my dad, JJ, and Ed. He’s shocked—no, you’re wrong. Glo calls him disgusting. I’ll never marry you. He answers, I’m going to kill you. She responds, try it. We’re all waiting for you. She hangs up. Nacho shoots holes in Glo’s pic on the screen. Next, he starts burning Glo’s pics. [this narco is muy pathetic.]
Duque arrives and is told Nacho’s not well. He’s locked himself in his room. There were gunshots. Duque wonders if Nacho killed himself. No, the henchie replies, he’s still yelling. [too bad.] Duque says they need to be careful and not let Nacho ruin the cartel.
Duque bangs on Nacho’s door. Open up! He’s too busy burning pics. He throws the lighter and starts a fire.
Are Gael and Yadi back at their house? Aren’t they in danger? Mateo comes over.
Nacho fuels the fire by throwing a bottle of alcohol into it. Duque (with henchies) burst into the room and try to get Nacho out. He resists. Get the fire extinguishers! Duque tries to talk sense into Nacho. Don’t let Glo do this to you! Nacho grabs hold of Duque, and they get out.
Glo and Estrada talk at his place. Glo worries for the safety of family and friends. Estrada understands that terrible things have happened, but the business can’t be forgotten. She knows. Glo is ready to face Nacho. Estrada warns that war is coming. If we lose, Nacho won’t show you or your family mercy.
Yadira won’t help Mateo speak with Gloria. Gael takes Mateo’s side. He thinks Mateo can be very helpful. Mateo is worried about Glo confronting Nacho. He wants Glo and Dani to leave before it’s too late. [I’d say it’s already late.]
Gloria has sent guards for Laura, Fercho, and Miguel. How nice of her. Fercho is worried they will have to postpone their wedding. Laura worries about what the social worker will think.
Nacho and Duque have moved to a safe house. Time to sober up and figure out what to do about Glo and Estrada. Nacho wants to add Montoya to the list.
Glo and Estrada talk about moving merch and avoiding possible sabotage by Nacho. He puts his trusted man, Bocho on it.
Glo looks a pic of Dani on her phone. Then a pic of Mateo. I’m not sure if she deleted it.
Mauricio calls Glo from a secure line. He couldn’t stop the president from breaking the news about the tunnels. He did his part, now Glo must turn in Nacho and Duque. She’ll send the location, but she doesn’t know if they are still there. But she promises to hand them over. [I guess she’ll need Mateo after all.] The only way to stop them is to send them to prison in the US.
Mateo continues to work on Yadira. Gael continues to back him up. Yadira continues to resist. Mateo mentions Dani. He recalls that Nacho wanted him to help kidnap the kid. Yadira wonders what else he’s keeping secret. Mateo says that it’s only for him to discuss with Glo. He begs to see Glo. He leaves. [Ok, I see guards outside Yadi’s house.] Duque’s guy, Mono, is there and he follows Mateo’s car.
Mono follows Mateo to his motel and reports to Duque. He’s been watching Yadira. There are two guards outside. Estrada’s men, Duque says, that bitch lied to me. Mono tells him that Mateo was there, and he knows where he’s staying. Say the word and he’ll kill him. Duque says not yet, and don’t tell Nacho or anyone else.
Alina comes clean to Gloria about Dario. She wants to leave the biz. Gloria and Violeta are very understanding and accept Alina’s decision. Glo warns her not a word of their operation to Dario or else.
Bocho and crew work on getting trucks ready. We see someone sending a text—Estrada’s man is here. Crew is gone and Nacho, Duque, and some thugs appear and corner Bocho.
Glo can’t rest until all the business is done, including handing over Nacho and Duque. She’s happy that Alina and Laura left the biz for love. Violeta asks her, and what about you? Mateo loves you. Glo says, after Eduardo, she swore Dani was the only love of her life. Mateo was nonsense.
Grrr… Mati is guilty about “abandoning” Luisa after she came all the way from Tijuana at her request. Erna is the voice of reason. Don’t contact her! It would put all of us in danger! Luisa can’t be trusted! Think of your grandsons. Would you want them killed because you had to go to Luisa? Mati pouts.
Glo reports to Estrada that Alina, Laura and Fercho have left the biz. But she has others she trusts. The convo is interrupted by a drone with a box heading in their direction. Security guards fire at the drone and the box drops. Is it a bomb? A guard opens it—It’s Bocho’s head. And a sheet with the note—this is just the beginning.
And we are out.
I hope Raul makes a triumphant return to drop a huge anvil on Enrique’s head.
Do we need to have 3 men chasing after Ana? She’s catching up to Gloria Guzman, aka La Jefa.
How did Enrique manage to get an off-premise liquor license in NYC so quickly? Even a temp permit takes at least a month. He must really be connected.
I thought selling beauty products and other high-end items was fine. At first, I questioned selling Velvet clothes in a supermercado. But other famous designers have worked with chain stores, so… Terrible name for the store, though. Sahghattan?
I see Blanca’s hair is back in a pony tail.
Maybe Mateo still lives with his mother and is embarrassed to bring anyone home.
Anon: Is this Kat in SC or Darcy ? Good job with the recap. Lots of twists still coming.
*Mati is ANNOYING: She needs to be put in some damn nursing home & stay there: Contacting Whacky Luisa will put EVERYONE in danger.
*Bocho got the Marie Antionette treatment: Not shocked.
*Laura & Fercho getting married sounds quite intriguing, but I feel like there's more twists coming.
*Yadira & Gael both need to watch their backs. Psycho Duque is gunning for BOTH of them.
*Mauricio & DEA still on the case to taking down Gloria & Co.,
I’m thinking Mateo lives with his mom. But you’d think he’d preview the Airbnb he got before pretending it was his. Or remove the personal pics first. (And who keeps their pictures out when they’re renting their apartment? I’d never trust the public to see those). But I think Clara would think living with mom is sweet, unless mom is really not.
K
Howdy from the Alamo City CarayCaray Family. Looking forward to seeing the recap of last night's episode.
I'll post my personal thoughts on last night's episode sometime this afternoon or evening.
We were spared the graphic details, but Francisco did not spare the begging Luisa. We can assume he raped her.
Marga tells Alberto that Lorenzo demoted Blanca to seamstress, likely because she turned down his invitation to dinner. Then he made Marga the manager. Marga says she’s not comfortable with this. Alberto assures her he will fix this, and Lorenzo won’t find out Marga told him. She’s Ana’s bestie and like family. Marga leaps at him with a big hug.
Max comes to a devastated Blanca. She tells him about her demotion. Life has taught me two lessons today, she says. Being a good employee guarantees nothing, and don’t trust men like you. He’s surprised at the last one. Blanca asks, how was your night of pleasure with Pepita? Don’t lie, I saw the video. She was showing you off like a trophy. I don’t know what I’m more disappointed in… Velvet, or you. [Well, she broke up with Max…but he did a very stupid thing with Pepita.]
Alberto speaks with Lorenzo about Blanca’s demotion. Enrique is present. Lorenzo thought it was his duty to run the atelier. It’s in the contract. Should he call his lawyer? Enrique thinks a lawyer is not necessary. Alberto tells Lorenzo his mission is to design the next collection, using the staff and resources put at his disposal. If someone is not fulfilling their obligations, he says, tell me and I’ll take the necessary measures. Is that clear?
Alberto asks, what’s the problem with Blanca? Lorenzo is very vague. Alberto asks, did she do something wrong? No, Lorenzo replies, I just believe she’s incapable of meeting my expectations. Enrique jumps in to defend his hire—Lorenzo was right to remove her. Alberto disagrees. Blanca’s been running the atelier for years, she’s a professional. It will take more than an opinion to remove her. He wants proof.
Lorenzo can’t supply proof, so Alberto says let’s forget this incident and talk about the next collection. Do you have anything to show us? Lorenzo says that will take some time. We need something as soon as possible, Alberto replies, I’d hate to think it’s you who can’t meet expectations. He looks at Enrique and adds… and that you hired the wrong person. [point scored for Alberto.]
In the atelier, Marga quietly tells Ana about Blanca and Lorenzo. She doesn’t like this “Lorenzo Spaghetti”. Ana says she looked him up online and it appears he’s not a very good person. Why did they hire him? Marga guesses because he’s famous. Ana replies, that doesn’t make him a good designer.
Pepita is gossiping with a group of seamstresses, and they laugh. Blanca is moping nearby. Ana notes that Pepita doesn’t mind what Lorenzo did to Blanca. Marga agrees with Ana.
Ana wonders where Luisa is.
Luisa has made her way home. She’s in bad shape. Miguel is playing in the kitchen area. She pays Judy for staying with Miguel. Judy asks what’s wrong? Luisa answers softly but firmly, I told you not to let anyone in. Judy replies, but the man seemed nice. He said your lawyer sent him. He brought gifts and food. Luisa tells Judy she’ll call her if she needs her. Luisa looks like she’s in a lot of pain, mental and physical.
Barbie arrives to torment Clara. How did it go with Mateo? Did he show you where he lives? Clara doesn’t tell her what really happened. His house… Yes… It’s beautiful. Barbie knows Clara isn’t telling the truth. It’s so sad to see a woman so full of hope being deceived, she says. Out of solidarity, I’ll do you a favor. Barbie gives her Mateo’s real address. She cautions, under no circumstances, say I gave it to you. Go see for yourself. Your image of Mateo will be totally changed. Barbie asks Clara for matcha tea with almond milk.
Emilio brings Ana’s proposals for the Sahghattan collection to Alberto without Ana knowing. Alberto thinks the sketches are very good. He reminds Emilio that Ana wanted no part in this, and doubts she changed her mind. Emilio admits that Ana didn’t change her mind, but he thought this was a big opportunity for her. He couldn’t let her waste it. He says he will tell Ana what he did.
Ana shows up at Carlos’ company, all dressed up in a Carmen Garza original. Are you ready to see my house, he asks. I’m ready for you not to tell me lies or half-truths, she replies. I hope you’re not afraid of flying, he says, the helicopter is waiting. Or we can go by car if you prefer. But that would be a 4-hour round trip with traffic. Ana asks, where do you live? Carlos answers, in the Hamptons. [doesn’t he have a place in the city as well, like other rich and famous people?]
Clara arrives at Mateo’s real house. A maid answers the door. An older woman approaches her, yes, who are you? Clara starts, excuse me, does Mateo Andrade live here? A dog barks in the background. The woman replies, yes, what can I do for you? Clara notices the picture over the fireplace, just like Barbie said. Eww… It’s photo of a smiling Mateo with a smiling older woman on his arm.
Another older woman comes in, holding a dog. She looks up at the picture and says that woman is the most important woman in Mateo’s life. Clara is shocked—Mateo is married? To an older woman? Clara spouts off—aren’t you ashamed? Mateo could be your son! The woman with the dog asks, why does this affect you? Who are you to Mateo?
Clara stutters… I’m… well… I was the fool dating him, but he lied to me. Well, he lied to both of us. I swear he didn’t tell me he was married… A third woman enters the room and asks, what’s this commotion? I could hear the shouting from my room. Who is this woman? Should we call the police?
Woman with the dog says, no… no… she’s funny and entertaining. She says she’s dating our Mateo. Can you believe it? The women chuckle. The third woman asks, what hope do you have of going out with Mateo? He has better taste than this. Clara takes offense—you don’t know Mateo’s taste at all.
Woman with the dog replies, you don’t think a mother knows her son’s tastes? Clara realizes her mistake. Mother? I’m so sorry. Yes, mom replies, I’m Mateo’s mother and you’re a stranger who entered our home without being invited. Clara becomes flustered and apologizes profusely. Mom asks, are you leaving or waiting for the police to arrive? Clara quickly runs out. The women laugh. [lol, we speculated Mateo was hiding a mother but looks like he’s living with two aunties as well!]
Cris tells an architect she wants major changes to the new house plans. This will seriously delay the completion of the project. Gloria is enjoying this. [is this woman ever without a drink in her hand?] Alberto walks in and Gloria gleefully informs him of the changes Cris is making. Alberto wants to move into the house asap. Of course, Gloria doesn’t mind if the newlyweds stay a few more months. Cris gets her way.
Dinner is served at Carlos’ house. He convince a world class chef, who only comes to NY two weeks a year, to cook. Ana didn’t expect any of this. She rode in a helicopter for the first time and she’s dining on fine food in a luxurious home. Is that bad, Carlos asks. No, she replies, I just think it’s too much. Don’t feel bad, I’m a girl who lives in Queens, in a much more modest apartment, and I work as a seamstress.
Carlos asks if this means nothing can happen between them, being from different social classes. She doesn’t answer. He continues, you are a spectacular woman. Beautiful inside and out. Smart, charming, compassionate and talented. What you see as too much right now… one day you’ll have it, on your own merits when you decide you want to be a renowned designer. Carlos doesn’t care about the rich/poor thing. He thinks he’s falling in love. They kiss.
Carlos apologizes. He didn’t mean to pressure her. Ana says he didn’t, but she asks him to be patient. She explains, I recently got out of a painful relationship. I don’t want to get hurt again. He tells her to take all the time she needs. He’s patient. But there’s one more secret he must tell. It’s about work. He works for Saghun Global. They own Sahghattan. He’s in charge of the project with Velvet. It was after they met that he was put in charge. But he did put the idea of Velvet forward. Ana wasn’t expecting this but she’s okay with it. They toast to future success.
Back in Queens, Emilio asks Ana how the date with Carlos went. She says it was good, but it feels strange, and she’s confused. Carlos wants a serious relationship. But she still has Alberto on her mind, and it still hurts to see him with Cris. Emilio encourages her to give it a chance. He wants to meet Carlos. Invite him for dinner. Ana agrees.
Emilio tells Ana that her brought her Sahghattan sketches to Velvet. She’s shocked. He tells her it’s time for the company to start appreciating her. Your past doesn’t define your future.
Luisa gets delivery of three very large bouquets of red roses. The card says, “I want to see you again, F.” Miguel asks, who sent the flowers? Luisa tells him she doesn’t know, it must be a mistake. Rick wanders into the open door of the apartment. [what’s with him always showing up?] Wow, he exclaims. She cautions him quietly, don’t ask.
Clara has become a dutiful assistant. Coffee ready for Mateo upon his arrival. His schedule is on his computer, his dry cleaning in the warehouse, tagged and organized. She made his appointment at the spa for an afternoon massage during his free time. She did all this as an apology for how she behaved.
They are interrupted by the arrival of Barbie and Enrique. The men go into the office. Barbie asks, did you confirm what I told you? Clara says it was a set up. Barbie is as snotty as ever. Barbie says the mother’s name is Emma, the women are his aunts, Juliet and Camille. They are a bunch of old maids who’ll never let Mateo be with another woman. Oh, the dog’s name is Emily. Barbie snarks, I hope you made a good impression because you’d rather be cursed than have those women not like you.
Pedro overhears Dr. Handsomepants speaking to his friend. He’s not serious about Marga, she’s just another conquest for him. He’s almost got her where he wants her—in his bed. He's made reservations tonight at a hotel restaurant. Pedro is not paying attention to his electrical work and is shocked. He falls off the step stool. Dr Pants and friend pick him up. Pedro wanders off.
The Sahghattan proposals are laid out for the board to review and choose the winner. Mateo says in fairness they won’t say whose design is whose until after the choice is made. Of course, everyone agrees on Ana’s. Alberto announces that Ana will lead the project. Val, Glo, and Enrique are not very pleased.
Ana is told she won the Sahghattan contest. She is officially a designer for Velvet. She will have to design an entire line in record time. Gloria says that Alberto will be by her side to support her in whatever way he can.
Barbie isn’t well. She thinks her tea had dairy milk. She’s lactose intolerant. Clara apologizes. The container must have been mislabeled. It said almond milk. Clara runs off. Gloria offers to help Barbie get to the bathroom. This gives Val and Enrique a chance to flirt. But Gloria spots them on her way out.
Marga offers Pedro the chocolate that Dr. Pants gave her. He turns it down. He asks Marga to have a movie and video game night tonight with him, complete with pizza and popcorn. Marga says she has a date with Dr. Pants. Yeah, Pedro replies, at the hotel restaurant? How did you know, she asks. He tells her Dr. Pants is only interested in one thing. He overheard him with a friend. He wants to do… what adults do… Marga answers, so what? I’m an independent, single… Pedro interjects—desperate? Marga takes exception. She’s not desperate. She walks away.
Val is trying to talk to Enrique about the Sahghattan project, but he’s more interested in in kissing her bare shoulder. Gloria storms into the room. She warns, Barbie is on her way. Barbie enters and Gloria practically orders Val to help Barbie back to the bathroom. Gloria stares at Enrique.
Luisa meets Francisco at the employee entrance. He’s got something for her, “for tonight”. She doesn’t want it. He pressures her. Once again, Rick shows up. Francisco warns Rick to stay out of this. Rick does not back down. You are a married man and shouldn’t be here. He asks if Francisco sent the flowers to Luisa. Luisa asks Rick to stay out of this. Rick threatens to record this and send it to Francisco’s wife, Ms. Teresa. Francisco leaves with his gift and bodyguard. Luisa hugs Rick.
Alberto, Mateo, Enrique and Ana discuss the presentation to Sahghattan. Carlos shows up, representing the Saghuns. Ana and Carlos pretend they don’t know each other. But Alberto notices the looks they exchange.
Alberto tells Carlos that Ana is the lead designer on the project. Carlos thought that Lorenzo was Velvet’s designer. Enrique says Lorenzo is working on the haute couture collection. Carlos can’t wait to see Ms. Velasquez’s designs. He takes a look and says that the designs are spectacular. They will be a hit in the stores.
Rick asks Luisa for the truth. He wants to help her. He’s seen Francisco harassing her. If he’s making her do things she doesn’t want, he will help her. Luisa sobs, don’t you get it? I don’t want to cause problems for you.
Emilio appears and tells Luisa that two cops want to question her about Ramon.
Barbie left to see a doctor and Gloria confronts Val. What’s going on between you and Enrique? Don’t deny it, I saw you. Val denies it anyway and says, I guess cheaters believe everybody cheats. Glo replies, Alberto was right to make you a salesperson. You’re not ready for this position. She warns Val, if this comes out, you have the most to lose, not Enrique. Men are forgiven for indiscretions, not women. If you want to be respected, start by respecting a married man. Imagine if it was Barbie who caught you.
Gracias, Dondi. Everything makes much better sense now that I've read your fine, detailed recap. Yes, a shame that Nacho didn't do himself in. Amazing that no one has every mutinied against him.
Honestly though, between Nacho and Duque and Luisa, it's Duque and Luisa whom I despise most. Nacho is nuts and has been nursing his nuttiness since adolescence. I do believe Gloria can still manipulate him to be on her side, but those other two have no hearts whatsoever.
I wondered why we were spending so much time with Laura and Miguel shopping in the boutique. Of course he shoplifts under the watchful eye of the story clerk and Laura is clueless, but how does this figure in the rest of the story? Just filler I guess.
I did a double-take of Mexico's president naming "El Nacho, El Duque, and La Jefa" as most wanted. She resembled the actual president, but surely she wouldn't do a cameo for this show.
Luisa explains to Ana and Marga that Ramon is missing. Like he fell off the face of the Earth. His mother filed a report. She believes something bad happened to him. Luisa says Ramon hasn’t returned her texts or calls and is also starting to think something bad happened.
Isabel comes to Velvet and is greeted by Emilio. She notices the Marquez family photos on the wall. Benjamin was so handsome, she says, and Alberto is handsome, too. Emilio notes that Alberto looks like her. Emilio had asked Isabel to come. [What was he thinking? What if Glo sees her there? IIRC, Juanita speculated about this.] She wonders why. He leads her upstairs and brings her to Ana.
Emilio explains, Ana won a competition and will be developing an important line for stores in NY. Isa is not surprised; Emilio has told her about Ana’s secret work for Alondra. Emilio continues, the atelier will be split. Half will work on the Velvet collection and half will work with Ana. Emilio recommends that Isa be the atelier manager for Ana. Ana agrees.
Val has cooled off from Enrique, she says she’s feeling stressed and doesn’t tell him about Gloria. He suggests a “de-stressing session”. Before Val can answer, Barbie rushes in with the most incredible news. Val offers to leave but Barbie asks her to stay. Barbie gushes—I’m pregnant! And she jumps all over a stunned Enrique. We’re going to have a baby!
Clara is out on the floor talking to a salesperson when Mateo’s mom, with dog, and aunts enter the store. She hides. An aunt wonders if Mateo will be okay with their visit. Mom says this is urgent business. I need to find out if he really knows that vulgar woman who showed up at our house yesterday. Clara overhears it all. Aunt says, why didn’t you ask him this morning? Mom answers, better to do it here, you know him. He would have given us the runaround and left. Here, he will have to tell us the truth.
Lorenzo wheels in to see Ana. He’s as rude as ever. He says the execs who approved of her, know nothing. He calls her designs dreadful and hideous. He says she’s far from being a real designer.
Emilio brings Isabel to see Alberto. He tells Alberto, since you said you’d split the atelier, we need a new manager. He introduces Isabel as the perfect candidate. They already spoke with Ana. He continues, she’s new and needs to work. We’re lucky she’s available.
Isabel holds out her hand, pleased to meet you. Alberto takes it. She introduces herself, Isabel Juarez. He answers, Alberto Marquez, pleased to meet you. Their eyes lock. Neither one lets go. [call of the blood?]
And we are out.
Dondi, we can always count on you for an excellent recap. The episode should have been titled the house revelations. We see Mateo's place, with the 3 sisters that I had a hard time differentiating one from another ,( I was on my phone initially as the internet was out). I wondered if their was a Mexican triplet acting family. So mom isn't crazy, but definitely an interfering type. I see Emily, the dog, got to go on their foray to Velvet.
Emilio is strange. Putting forward an old friend to be in charge of the new atelier. I would have thought Margarita would have taken one team. Does she have a green card? Will ICE raid the shop. Also, the department store line will actually need a bigger work space, like the one in Mexico. I would think the one at Velvet is used for alterations and special one of a kind designs. Anyhow, no resumé, just a suggestion from an employee and she's hired. I don't think working at the prison really will have given her the necessary credentials. A seamstress job yes, boss, no.
Well that Francisco is a really nasty guy. Luisa was definitely hurting physically. Rick must be her next door neighbor, thus all his drop ins.
I got distracted. The rest of the house one theme. Carlos place in the Hamptons is revealed and then we don't get to hear about Chris and Al's new place. Chris threw together her wedding without too much bridezilla vibes, but her house is another story. I would hate to be her architect and contractor. It's not a new build as she wants to replace the windows with ones twice as large so the view of the pool is better. And the Venetian tiles are on back order. No substitutions for this gal.
Replay of drone delivering Bocho’s head. Estrada immediately orders beefed up security. This means war! He also wants Bocho honored as he deserves. He says to notify Bocho’s family and tell them they will be taken care of as long as he is alive.
Gloria is sorry, Bocho protected them for two years. Estrada notes that Nacho dealt a strong blow. Glo worries there’s no stopping Nacho. Estrada tells her, be strong, you can’t appear scared. The worst is yet to come. She’s worried about her family.
Alina tells Dario the good news. She’s left the biz and she’s all his. She wants to go back to school. He agrees, it would set a good example for their kids. She adds their grandkids and great-grandkids to the convo. She also asks that he never ask her anything about Gloria ever again. He promises.
'
Anderson from DC calls Mauricio. He says (in the most irritating gringo Spanish accent), I spoke to the president and he’s happy with the destruction of the tunnels. We see Mateo hacking into the conversation. Anderson continues, the president wants the leader of the Tijuana Cartel caught. The Mexican president is on board, too. The people support it as well. Mau says they are close to bringing down the cartel. Anderson offers all DEA resources. Anderson says they also want Gloria Guzman, aka La Jefa. Both Mau and Mateo are upset.
Duque tells Nacho that Santa delivered the present to Estrada. Nacho is satisfied that a message was sent to both Estrada and Gloria.
Mau tells Dario that Anderson called. The president ordered Gloria’s capture, too. Dario is not pleased. They can’t mess with deals made with informants. Mau says Anderson is coming to Mexico and he will try to persuade him. Dario asks if Mau told Glo. No, he doesn’t want to say anything yet.
Mateo tries calling Gloria. No answer. He doesn’t see Mono sneaking up behind him when he leaves a message: “I overheard a call between Mauricio Domiguez and the DEA. We need to talk. It’s too delicate to speak on the phone. Believe me, this changes everything. I’m going to visit Yadi and Gael. I love you.” How’s it going, Mono says with a gun at Mateo’s head. Where do you think you’re going?
Montoya is on a call with Estrada and Gloria. They fill him in. Montoya offers his best men to Estrada. He’s giving his full support. He hasn’t answered any of Nacho’s calls. The men tell Gloria not to worry. She says she’s indebted to them both and she will repay them.
Gloria says that Mateo’s been calling her. Estrada gives her a new, untraceable phone. It should be used only to contact her family and no one else. She wants to keep in touch with Yadi and Laura. Estrada reminds her they are at war and that would put everyone in danger. It’s the little mistakes that bring down the big fish. She realizes he’s right.
Mono brings Mateo back to his motel room. He calls Duque. Boss, he (Mateo) was in a rush to tell Gloria something important. Duque asks to be put on speaker. He asks Mateo for the info he needed to share with Glo. Mateo asks Mono to put the gun down. Mono lowers his gun and points it at Mateo’s crotch. Mateo says that the gringos know where Nacho is hiding. If Nacho is caught, Gloria would be safe. Duque doesn’t believe Mateo. Off speaker, Duque tells Mono to hold Mateo there, he’s coming.
Gloria comes to the family safe house. She tells the fam they can only go out if it’s absolutely necessary. She has a new phone and asks them to memorize the number and not share it with anyone. Not even Mateo. Erna says Mateo wants to help. Gloria says she needs to keep as many people as possible away from her. It’s better for Mateo to return to Colombia.
Laura and Fercho have a sit down with Miguel. The kid worries about what they have to say. Is it bad news? They are hesitant to tell him. Finally, they say they’re planning to go to Colombia. Miguel is overjoyed. He’ll see his grandma again! Is it for good? Laura says she doesn't know how long but for a while. He runs off to start packing.
Yadi tries to reach Gloria. Gael thinks she turned off her phone so not to be traced. Yadi worries. Gael says the guards would inform them if something happened.
Duque arrives at the motel with a baseball bat. Mateo is tied to a chair. Duque wants the information. Mateo tries to bargain. No dice. Duque beats him in the ribs with the bat.
Pathetic Nacho looks at pics of Gloria on his phone and laments that Gloria should have been his. Now he has no choice. He tries calling her. No answer. He says, if you think changing your number will stop me, you don’t know me, Gloria.
Estrada addresses his men. Bocho will not be forgotten. We are going to pay Nacho back for taking the life of one of ours. Nobody messes with the Tlahuac Cartel. Colombian reinforcements are on the way. Let’s kill those dogs. Counterattack the Tijuana Cartel.
Mateo hasn’t spilled yet. Duque tortures him some more. He’d like to put Mateo in front of Gloria so she can watch him suffer. So, he won’t kill Mateo yet. Mateo accuses Duque of being a coward who needs a henchie’s help. That only earns Mateo more hits with the bat.
After a long night, Duque returns to Nacho. Where the hell were you, Nacho asks, I tried reaching you. Duque says he was handling a problem with transport. It’s under control now. Nacho tells Duque, let’s take a trip to all the selling spots. I want us to be seen together so no one thinks we’re not friends. Duque says he’s glad to see Nacho back in form running the biz.
Estrada has a caravan of fully armed men in trucks and SUVs. He radios everyone. We’re at war. We are responding to the Tijuana attack. If anyone is scared of dying, speak up, but don’t let me find you or I’ll kill you myself. Estrada wants Nacho alive so he can cut off his head like he did to Bocho.
We see Nacho and Duque in their car. They are armed. Not sure if they have other men traveling with them. The shooting starts. The cars stop and it becomes a shoot out on the streets. Bystanders run for cover. Nacho and Duque manage to hold off Estrada’s army and get away in the closest available vehicle. Estrada and what’s left of his group takes off after them. Bodies are everywhere.
Mono is watching over Mateo with the bat. He tells Mateo that Duque’s gone, here’s his chance to talk. Maybe he can return to Colombia. Mateo sticks with his story. Mono says Duque gave orders to continue torturing him. Mateo passes out. Is he dead? Mono lifts and shakes Mateo. Mateo has managed to loosen his ties and starts fighting with Mono.
Laura and Miguel go shopping for their trip. Miguel sees a red handbag. He wants to buy it for grandma. Laura looks at the price. Too expensive.
Did Nacho and Duque get away? Not so fast, Estrada catches up to them. Shooting starts again. Duque shouts watch out for the truck ahead. Nacho manages to drive around the truck, but the truck blocks the road for Estrada. Estrada is livid.
Laura and Miguel continue shopping. He really wants to buy something for grandma. Yadira calls Laura. They miss each other. Yadi says she can’t get in contact with Gloria. Laura tells her they are moving to Colombia asap. It looks like Miguel is going to pocket something while Laura and the salespeople are not watching.
Mono goes for his gun on the floor, but Mateo grabs the bat and knock him out. Mateo picks up the gun, but he doesn’t shoot Mono. He grabs some stuff and takes off.
Laura asks Yadi to come with her to Colombia. Her mom has a spare room; she can come with Gael. Start a new life. Yadi thanks her and declines, Gloria is her only family and needs her, she’s staying. Laura tells Yadi she’s marrying Fercho.
Looks like the salesperson is becoming suspicious of Miguel wandering around the store.
Nacho and Duque get away safely somewhere. Nacho is ecstatic. Estrada’s army couldn’t beat the two of them. Duque isn’t as enthusiastic. He flashes back to his visit with Luisa. How Nacho treated him like a worthless dog. How Luisa encouraged him to be by Nacho’s side. The best way to destroy the enemy is to have him close.
Duque aims his gun at the back of Nacho’s head. Nacho regrets letting Duque go. He says, you’re the best man I ever had in this business. Forgive me. From now on you don’t work for me anymore. Duque lowers his gun. Nacho turns to face Duque. From now on, you’re my partner. My family. I’ll give you the place you deserve.
Mono calls Duque. Mateo escaped. Duque says he’ll call back. Duque lies and tells Nacho that the press is at the shootout site. Nacho’s guys arrive to pick him and Duque up.
Laura checks out. She can’t spend more than 1k in pesos. The other salesperson asks Laura if she will pay for what Miguel took. Laura has no idea what she means. The woman goes to search Miguel. Laura defends him.
The woman says she saw Miguel put items in his clothes. She called security. The guard arrives. Miguel refuses to take off his jacket. He’s searched. Miguel struggles. Then he removes some perfume from his sleeve and the bracelet from his pocket. The guard wants to arrest Miguel.
Gloria sees the news report of the cartel gunfight. She’s talking to Estrada on the phone. He tells her it was pointless, Nacho got away. Gloria notes that civilians died, too. Estrada blames those deaths on Nacho. [how can he be 100% sure?]
The Mexican president speaks. After the successful dismantling of the narco tunnels, the Tijuana Cartel has unleashed a wave of terror in the country which has resulted in the deaths of innocent civilians. This is why I have decided to enact new measures. In collaboration with the US, we will not rest until we catch the leaders responsible for these acts. She names Nacho, Duque and La Jefa, Gloria Guzman.
Estrada heard—the president is coming for Gloria. Gloria is stunned.
And we are out.
Great recaps! Kat, I was thinking Isabel might have run the atelier when with Benjamin. Otherwise, Emilio’s suggestion is not realistic. She would still be out-of-date with fashion.
Luisa’s experience is so tragic. Francisco is evil and I hope he gets an anvil soon, perhaps from Rick.
I’m enjoying Mateo’s mom and aunts and the little dog! It will be interesting to see where this leads. I like him with Clara, so who knows?
I don’t see how Carlos fits in. I agree I prefer Rodrigo. Ana will surely end up with Alberto, unless he dies from that inherited condition. So, perhaps Carlos is working with someone like Enrique, but I can’t imagine why. I like seeing Ana smile! So, hard to figure these guys out.
Where is Raul when you need him? He, Ana, and Blanca could save Velvet.
Babachita
I’m glad I didn’t bother to learn Dr. Pants real name. But Marga is right. She’s an adult and if she wants a little nookie then her choice. But hope she makes it clear to him that’s SHE’S dumping him right after. He deserves at least that.
Cris may be a nightmare to work with but she’s right about the baldosas (floor tile- learned a word!). Once those are in, there is no replacing them. Might as well wait for what she wants.
Mateo better do right by Clara. She may be if the lower classes (in Barbie and the aunties eyes) but she knows her worth.

Dondi, I have to hold off on reading your recap. I'm three episodes behind. I'm definitely over-telenovela-ed recently. And I have had two evenings out and about this week. I'm watching Velvet and Karsu, on Uni. I really like Karsu and find myself tuning into that first, followed by Velvet.
I'm also a new (and rabid) fan of the Golden State Valkyries, complete with team t-shirt.
And, to make matters even worse, Colunga is returning in a couple of weeks in a new novela in the 10PM spot on Uni. I hate being such a couch potato, but it's easy to get quasi-addicted to these plots.
Thanks, dondi, for the excellent recap. ITA about Blanca kind of being hoist with her own petard. She let that fear of being seen as a cougar cause her to break up with him. Pepita was a big mistake, but Blanca kind of asked for it, dumping him.
I like Alberto as a businessman and as a caring employer, not so much his continued expectation that he has any claim on Ana at all.
I loved the expression on Enrique’s face, smirk nowhere to be seen, when Alberto pointedly asked Lorenzo for a progress report on the designs he needs to keep Velvet afloat.
Who’s thrilled about a reluctant sex partner as Francisco seems to be? Maybe a skeezy old man (thanks K.) who’s a fan of porn involving forced sex.
Needing to go to the hospital for being lactose intolerant? Clearly a rich people problem.
I know we’re supposed to be rooting for Clara, but I’m pretty much over her. Things about this novela remind me of some of the Oldtimers I’ve seen where they combine the rich boy/poor girl trope with a LOT of slapstick. Clara is nearly 95% slapstick.
I’ll say this for Gloria, her eyes were rolling behind Cris’s back as Cris kept insisting on more and more elaborate architectural changes to the obvious chagrin of the man who designed the original plan. Also, I liked the reaming out of her daughter over her thing with Enrique. I’m sure Aylin Mujica was happy to drop the overbearing villain thing for a couple of scenes.
Is the apartment building where the staff all live meant to be in Queens? I hadn’t really realized that until Ana described herself as a seamstress from Queens. I guess I thought they just took the subway from Manhattan to their favorite bar. My one and only visit to NYC was to visit a boyfriend who moved there from San Francisco for work. His apartment was in Astoria, and I remember noticing all those grey-haired ladies, many of them speaking a mixture of Greek and English. I loved every minute I spent there!
Are they ginning up a Rick/Luisa pairing? He seemed to really have a thing for Valeria when he first showed up on the sales floor at Velvet.
Another repetitive slapstick element is the Pedro/Marga pair, up to and including an electrical shock.
I predict that Gloria will spot Isabel as soon as Monday.
Wow! Muchísimas gracias, dondi, for yet another stupendous recap. And in addition to the Velvet recap, you've done one for La Jefa as well. I honestly don't know how you do it at all, never mind how you do it all so amazingly well.
I'm very glad that Marga told Alberto that Lorenzo has demoted Blanca, and that it was probably because she wouldn't have dinner with him. And I'm impressed with the way Alberto handled the issue. I found it amusing that Lorenzo told Alberto that Blanca didn't meet his expectations. Right--she didn't cave in and have dinner with him.
So Ana looked Lorenzo up online and found that he's apparently not a very good person. And THAT'S the kind of person Enrique wants for Velvet?? I would have thought that Enrique's own self interest in the company would have made him immediately rule out Lorenzo.
I was surprised at how badly Clara behaved with Mateo's mother and aunts. She immediately goes on the offensive and scolds the person who indeed turns out to be Mateo's mother. Clara really shouldn't have any sort of administrative position.
I gotta say, I found Carlos's statement about the chef rather strange. I found myself wondering what would make a world-class chef (I think at one point Carlos said he had three Michelin stars--the top rating that very few chefs and restaurants achieve) come to cook for Carlos. Megabucks, perhaps?
Pedro has always struck me as goodhearted but immature and a klutz. And we see both qualities in this episode. We've now seen him fall, or crash into things, several times in the few weeks the novela has run. And good grief--what boy over the age of, say, 12, would say that someone "wants to do...what adults do"? (Especially someone who did "what adults do" and has a son to show for it.)
Bravo Rick! He's not only protective of Luisa, he's found out that Francisco is married, and Rick threatens to tell the wife about her husband's ugly behavior.
I have VERY little liking for Gloria, but I do think the warning she gave Val about Enrique was sensible and appropriate.
I'm a little uneasy about the police coming to ask Luisa about Ramon. Yes, it's perfectly reasonable that they should do so. I'm just worried that they'll wind up accusing Luisa of making Ramon "disappear."
And thanks, dondi, for remembering that I mentioned the dangerous likelihood of Gloria recognizing Isabel if she comes to Velvet. We know how much Gloria hates Isabel, and how she very likely framed Isabel for someone's murder and caused her to be imprisoned for 25 years. So if she recognizes Isabel....
Niecie: The Mexican President naming Gloria as one of the Most Wanted tells me Gloria is going down BIGLY.
Since this is a Super Series, we're going to have to wait until Season 2 to find out the ramifications.
Matilde is still ANNOYING.
Thank you, everyone.
Kat, I think it’s going to be hard to keep those 3 sisters straight: mom Emma and aunties Juliet and Camille. At least we know that mom carries Emily the dog around like an accessory. I wonder how Barbie found out about them.
Very interesting, Babachita, you mention Carlos might be working with Enrique. He might want to keep Ana away from Alberto.
K, as for Dr. Pants aka William, I’d like to see Marga lead him on a little, get that fancy dinner, and dump him before bedtime.
novelera, I’m over Clara, too. I never really liked her much, although I don’t want anything terrible to happen to her. Yes, the Velvet employees live in a building in Queens, IMHO, a borough that doesn’t always get the respect it deserves. Queens is one of the most diverse counties in the US. Ah, Astoria. Maybe the Velvet building is located there. Still lots of Greeks and Italians. My best friend’s father owned a business on Steinway.
ITA with your post, Juanita. I’m especially worried that Luisa will be blamed for Ramon. Hasn’t she suffered enough?
Both Rodrigo and Carlos seem sincere, but I don’t feel the chemistry with Ana.
It seems we all agree that Emilio bringing Isabel to work at Velvet is weird and risky.
Bring back Raul, asap!
Thanks, once again, for one of your Friday specials. Very well written. I can't stop watching and each episode is a complete downer.
The Duque actor is a master of facial expressions. Every time Nacho isn't looking right at his face, he gets a murderous expression. And Nacho is clearly unhinged.
What ever happened to Luisa's surgery? Now that she isn't going into hiding with the family, is that off?
Come on, those bashings with a bat must have nearly incapacitated Mateo. But then he jumps up, agile as a cat, and gets the better of Mono.
So...Miguel, nature or nurture? It seems like they might be going with a perfectly fine boy corrupted by his father. But he's been a bit sketchy from the beginning. I do like the kid, though. I can't believe they'd actually arrest a juvenile for shoplifting. It's not as if he took fine jewelry.
We got another narco shootout where lots of bodies fall, but none of the principal actors do. It was insane Estrada's car was right beside Nacho's at least once, maybe more, and he didn't even wing him.
