Thanks for the kind words, Maggie and Babachita. Yes, this is quite the puzzler.
I actually don't think Sadakat is crazy. Whether she married into a powerful family or was part of one and chosen by the Albora clan for that reason, she definitely seems to me to consider herself way above all other people she knows. She has an iron will and wants her children to be the way SHE wants them to be. It seems she wants them to marry according to her dictates and to never defy her in any way. That's why she said out loud why she tried to kill Alya. It was because she had the temerity to defy her.
People who've been on the blog a long time are probably familiar with "crockpot theories" No, not crackpot...crockpot. It's always been OK here to put forth wild speculation, as long as it's not a spoiler. Here's a doozy. Could the reason Sadakat is so violently opposed to Sahin and Zerrin as spouses for her children be about incest? Was Cihan's deceased father the father of those two? Did Sadakat sleep with Ecmel and produce one or both of the siblings she deems impossible for her offspring to marry?
Of course, it's more likely she hates them because she hates Ecmel, even though we saw a flashback where they were in love. Did he dump her for Fidan?
I’m still catching up, mostly on the cultural aspects because Sadakat is terrible even by terrible telenovela mothers. Her own kids don’t seem to like her much, even if they’re still trying to keep her out of prison for some reason. But what really gets me is her ring tone. It’s just so very basic for such an aggressive authoritarian. She could do better.
So someone (Deniz?) mentioned Alya being adopted. I hope her birth family is another, stronger, mob family. It wouldn’t be great if the long run but would provide a satisfying short term solution to Sadakat.
K
Belated thanks for the Wednesday recap, novelera. Everything we needed to know.
I don’t know who to believe, Ecmel or Sadakat. Maybe they don’t even know the whole truth. Misunderstandings make for good and frustrating storylines. Someone could have manipulated things so they would break up, blaming each other. We know very little about Sadakat’s husband, Azem Albora.
Maybe one of the “kids” is an Ecmel - Sadakat production, so your crockpot theory could be right, novelera.
Sadakat is a contender for most villainous, but I think Azize from Hercai is still the worst.
I’ll have a Friday recap up after I finish my Saturday KPA.
Ooooh Novelera, what a delicious crockpot theory! You should write for telenovelas!
I’m trying to figure out what the story is. Okay, so Sadakat was a servant. She had a love affair with Ecmel. Did he then dump her to marry a woman with social standing and Sadakat wants revenge? Or did she dump him to marry his brother? When she visited him in prison she showed him the photograph and he seemed scared about it. Why?
It’s Sadakat’s fault that Sahin is now thirsting for revenge. He was treated like a brother and now his heart is broken. It was so sad to see. Cihan was throwing hands because you can’t talk that way about my mother? Cihan, really? You have about the worst mother on the planet and yes, we’re all gossiping about her.
As for Ecmel, what is he actually up to? Is he a traitor?
Dondi356: That nosy reporter is getting on my damn nerves, I hope she dies a violent painful death.
IIRC, the flashback that was triggered by the picture sent to Ecmel showed the couple walking together, but Ecmel was the only one making declarations of love. Sadakat was flirty, but I don’t recall her making any declarations of love. So, it left me very suspicious of Sadakat’s intentions way back then.
Babachita
Wow, what a tangled web! Maggie, I agree that it's Sadakat's fault that Sahin is now alienated from the guys he was so close to: Cihan and Kaya.
As dondi mentioned, we get two sides of the back story and it's hard to tell who's right. Ecmel shows Sahin the photo of him alongside young Sada and says she seduced him and has been vengeful all these years because he didn't raise her status by marrying her. But later on, Sadakat accused Ecmel of being a vile seducer himself, taking advantage of a 17-year-old and then abandoning her.
Alya finally gets to see Deniz. Deniz then shows Cihan some family pictures on his tablet.
Sahin is now extremely resentful. He takes Zerrin's phone from her hand, saying "No más". He says she'll never see Kaya again.
Cihan calls a big meeting of all the mucky mucks in the area. He says they've been sabotaging him. A deal is reached whereby Cihan allows merch through his land for a 25% cut. But no drugs, no bombs, and no weapons for terrorists.
Sada tells Alya to her face that she shot her, to Cihan's horror. She pours out all her vitriol for quite a while. There's a flashback where Seyda is about to cut Cihan's throat and Sada, conveniently entering her married son's bedroom in the middle of the night, stops her. Sada is convinced that Alya plans to be just like Seyda, a Demir puppet.
Sahin has gone to the police, saying that Sadakat shot Alya. When the cops show up, Alya says it was a suicide attempt. She tells Sada no one will separate her from her son. This makes no sense to me. If Sada were in the slammer, she might be able to leave Turkey.
And, yes, it's frustrating to watch Cihan beating up on Sahin for telling the truth. This blind loyalty thing bugs me.
So Sahim and Zerrin are siblings. And each is in love (-ish) with an Alboran (Nave-or however that’s spelled- and Kaya) but aren’t their father brothers so they are first cousins? Or didn’t miss something?
K
K, I’m of the impression that marriage between cousins is not unusual in that culture. In the Albora family it would make sense as they distrust everyone outside the family (as well as some members of their own family).
Babachita
#56 part 1
Elif arrives at the airport in Rome. She heads to a big black van, hands over a bag of money to a guy, and gets in. We don’t see who is in the van with her. She nervously looks around and spots Sami. And then to her great relief, she sees Omer.
Omer hops into Sami’s car. I thought I told you not to come, Sami says, give me one good reason I shouldn’t throw you out. Because you need me, Omer replies, look you’re right, I put my emotions before my work but that’s why you can trust me. The girl in that car is the love of my life, I don’t want a single hair on her head harmed. Even if you get angry and kick me out, I will protect her from afar. So let me help. The operation will end, and we won’t have to say another word to each other. Please put your anger aside for now and I will too. Sami smiles, okay, what do you say? Let’s get that bastard Metin. The black van pulls out and Sami follows.
Hospital vigil for Bekir. The doctor delivers the bad news—we couldn’t save him. Fatma screams and collapses. Huseyin and Elvan hold onto her. She shouts at Melike, you’re a murderer! You killed him! Melike cries.
Still following the van, Sami tells Omer he arranged a safe hotel for Elif and registered her under a different name. Omer asks, where will they take her? They will drop her off in the square near the hotel, Sami replies, then she will head to the hotel. There’s a friend of mine from the Rome police, he will support us as necessary. We will stay in the same hotel. Elif’s safety is paramount. I canceled your reservation, but we can arrange something again.
Sami continues, I did what you asked so I want something from you. You will not get into a romantic relationship with Elif until the operation is over, got it? Let your mind be completely on work otherwise I’ll leave you and nothing you do will be legal. Remember, you’ve been suspended. I don’t want anything to happen to you. You are my responsibility. Omer doesn’t look pleased.
Elif is dropped off. Sami and Omer spot someone who they think is Metin (Fatih). [I’ll call him Metin for now because that’s what they use in this ep.] Sami asks Omer, what do you think of him (Metin)? Omer says he looks like a kiddie. He doesn’t seem like the type to manage such an organization. Sami says he’s seen others like this who could easily ruin your life. Omer asks Sami to stick with Elif, and he will go after the guys.
Elif communicates with Sami and Omer. Metin isn’t here. I asked these men about him and they said nothing. What do we do now? Sami tells her to go to the hotel, check in and wait. She asks if Omer is with him. She thought she saw him at the airport. Omer answers, I’m here. She answers in Italian as Sami’s car drives past her, welcome to Rome, commissioner.
Elif arrives at the hotel as Sami’s car pulls up. Elmer briefly look at each other. Everyone walks into the hotel separately.
Henchie reports to Metin. Everything is good. We picked up the girl and went to the city center. She asked to be dropped off. Probably didn’t want us to know where she was staying. Metin assumes Elif is here with the team. But she doesn’t think I’m aware of it, he adds.
The henchie says he will find where she’s staying and put a tail on her. I didn’t want to do it without permission. No need to do that, Metin replies. Let her relax. Are they aware we are going to another bank? Yes. Listen carefully, Metin says, go bring me my guest now.
#56 part 2
Metin calls Nilufer. Unavailable. He plays the message Nilu left for him: what kind of man are you? How could you do this to me? How could you lie to me while looking me in the eyes?
Mert brings Nilu a glass of water. He asks what has upset her. Is it your idiot lover again? I really messed up, Mert, Nilu starts. I made huge mistakes. Asli walks by and listens in. What mistakes, Mert asks, you’re scaring me. Elif has done so many things for me, she sobs, but I didn’t believe her. She has sacrificed herself for me and Asli. What am I going to do? Mert says they will figure it out together. Asli comes over and sits with them.
Sami tells Omer he’s meeting with the Italian friend. Omer should keep an eye on Elif and let him know if there are any developments.
Omer surprises Elif with a visit to her room. He asks, how are you? I was worried about you. Are you sure you want to do this? Elif says, he’s (Metin) supposed to be here, but he’s not. What happens if he’s not here? Is the op a failure? What if we don’t catch him?
Omer tries to calm her. This will work even if Metin isn’t here. We will catch his men, and we will find him through the connections. Elif panics. If we can’t catch him, if this fails, that will be the end of me. I can’t lose my sisters. Omer really wants to hold her and comfort her but he can’t. She goes to wash her face.
After an awkward silence, Mert says to Nilu let’s go see where Hulya is with the coffee. We can talk as we go. Asli says that Nilu isn’t going anywhere, but Mert can go. Nilu says don’t be ridiculous. Asli pulls Mert by the arm and says Hulya went to Colombia to buy the coffee. She will prepare it when she returns. It won’t be ready for another month. Asli pushes Mert into the elevator. We reached the end of your allotted time. My sister and I need to speak privately about women’s things.
Nilu calls Asli out on her rudeness. Asli doesn’t care. She overheard and asks about Nilu’s mistakes. Start talking! Why did you dump Mert? Why won’t you explain this? Nilu admits she fell in love with the wrong person. Asli asks, and what does that have to do with Elif? Did you fall for one of her ex-boyfriends? Nilu says no.
Asli presses for an answer. Nilu explains, the man who kidnapped me was threatening Elif. To save me, Elif got into illegal business. I fell in love with the man who made her do this. Asli gasps. Elif didn’t go to Rome for the collection. She went because that man wanted her to. I found a CD and listened to it. You were mentioned in it, too. Why was my name mentioned, Asli asks, what are you saying?
Elif returns to Omer. She’s scared. Omer asks Elif to trust him. She gets a call from Asli—what do you think you’re doing? Elif says she doesn't understand. Asli replies, I’m talking about that crazy man, Metin and what he’s doing to you. Nilu told me everything and she made me listen to the CD. What is going on?!
Elif says she will explain when she returns. Asli demands answers now. Is it true you went to Rome to launder money? If this is true, stop and come back immediately. I’ll call the police. Elif tells her to calm down and don’t call the police. It will make it worse. When I return, I will tell you everything, don’t worry. Asli agrees and hangs up. Elif tells Omer that Asli knows everything. Asli grabs Nilu, don’t tell me you still see this man. Nilu says she doesn’t.
#56 part 3
Elif worries about telling Asli about everything. How do I explain about our mother? We’ll find a way, Omer replies. Elif wants to go out for a walk. Omer sneaks into the elevator before it closes completely. He tells her they can’t leave together but he doesn’t want her to go out alone. Give me a place to meet up in 20 minutes. She says no need. He asks her to send the location by phone.
Elif sends the location: Peace Café at number 3, Peace Street.
Metin tries calling Nilufer again. Unavailable.
Metin’s guest is Nedim, the bribed DA. Why did you bring me here, he asks, I need to be near my daughter. You will be, Metin replies, do what I tell you and then you’ll be with her. Nedim worries, did you do anything to her? Don’t offend me, Metin answers, I’ll get angry. And I can’t control myself when I get angry. What more do you want from me, Nedim asks. Metin says he needs moral support. This will open the door to a new life. Nedim asks, what will I do? We don’t hear the answer.
Elif walks through Rome and recalls better times there.
Asli paces and bites her nails. Bahar tells her to stop and Asli snaps back. She can’t be calm, she needs to find a way out for Elif. Bahar says she could help if she knew what was going on. Asli laughs, with your little brain Bahar? Do you think our family wants to share all our problems with you? Get lost. Nilu tells Bahar not to take Asli seriously. Nilu says they can go to another room. Bahar leaves the room. Nilu asks if she should get Asli’s meds. Asli says she doesn’t take sedatives because it will hurt her baby.
Nilu regrets explaining anything to her sister. She heads to the kitchen to ask Hulya to prepare an herbal tea for Asli. Bahar is in the kitchen making juice, and she sneaks Asli’s medication into it. Nilu says the meds will harm the baby. Bahar fires back, what baby? There is no baby. It was taken when she was in the hospital, and she doesn’t remember. Nilu is stunned.
Omer asks for directions to the restaurant in Italian. [Not bad]. He meets Elif. She’s nervous. She’s thinking about her sisters. My life is ruined, and I don’t know how to fix it. Omer replies, my mom says that something good always comes from something bad. It’s true. You and I are the best example of that. You can’t deny it, right? She can’t.
Elif admits she reserved this restaurant before she came to Rome. She wanted to celebrate his birthday. She hoped they’d have time to do it. And look, here we are, she says. Omer asks, on that day, why did you tell me you didn’t love me? She doesn’t want to talk about that. He continues, you arrange a surprise for a man you don’t love, and from far away? Is it worth it for a person you don’t want?
I just made a phone call, Elif replies, don’t exaggerate. Don’t do this Elif, Omer answers, your Omer is in front of you. If you lie, you better make it a good one. Otherwise, I’ll see right through to the truth. Please don’t do this now, she asks, I don’t have the strength for it. I just want time to stop. Let’s not talk about resentment. Let’s do something we’ve never done before. Let’s not argue. One condition, signorina, Omer says, let’s have some fun, like 2 tourists who came to celebrate my birthday.
#56 part 4
Huseyin and Elvan bring a devastated Melike home. Arda and Pelin are with them. Their kids worry that mom is sick. Elvan takes Melike to the bedroom. Huseyin sends the kids to the kitchen to prepare something to eat. Pelin says they arranged for the funeral tomorrow. Huseyin thanks them and apologizes for their trouble. Arda says it’s nothing, we knew Bekir Amca well, we played games, drank tea. God rest his soul, Huseyin replies. Pelin asks for Omer. He hasn’t been around. Huseyin says Omer packed his bag and took off. He has no idea where he went.
Cut to Elmer toasting to Omer’s Roman birthday celebration. Omer says this is his most interesting birthday ever. Because we are in Rome, she asks. I never celebrated my birthday with an ex-lover, he replies. We can leave if you want, she offers, we can never sit at the same table again. Omer says he is very happy where life has taken him, and she should herself the same question.
Elif threatens to withhold his birthday gift. It’s a pocket watch with an inscription: Be as beautiful as a rose, but don’t be as cruel as a thorn. Say something that will either make someone live or kill them but never leave them wounded—Shams. This costs a lot, Omer notes, how will I ever repay you? Elif reminds him of the present he brought to her office. I thought about giving you this before but then I gave up on us.
Omer laughs, you really hold a grudge, don’t you. If anyone else knew what’s happened between us, they wouldn’t believe it. We broke each other’s hearts from the first moment, Elif replies, from now on, don’t let our words hurt each other, let’s not allow this happen. Omer says let’s toast to that.
Omer asks, why Rome, why not NY, London? There must be a story. A film, Elif replies. Omer jokes, it must be Spartacus, that’s perfect for you. She jokes back, yes, that’s perfect for me. Then she adds, it’s Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen. I heard of people who read a book, and it changed their lives, Omer replies, but you decided to live in a place because of a movie. She explains it’s a love story between a princess and a journalist.
Ah, a romantic comedy, Omer interjects. Elif says she won’t explain further. He’ll shut up and listen. She says it’s unlike others. The princess and the journalist unintentionally lie to each other, and their love is born from this lie. Omer says it’s interesting.
Bahar sulks out in the yard. Nilu comes out. Asli is doing better, and she thanks Bahar for her help. She couldn’t have dealt with it herself. You know Asli, she says things and forgets them the next day. Bahar says it doesn’t matter. She knows her place in this house. She gets up and goes back inside.
Muzzafer brings a guest up to the house. A college friend of Nilu’s. The woman rushes to hug Nilu. Nilu doesn’t seem to know this woman. Nilu picks up on something and plays along. Muzzafer leaves and the woman reveals why she’s there. She gives Nilu a phone—Metin will call you.
Metin calls. My beautiful wife. I heard your voice and the world is mine. I felt terrible when I received your message. Why did you send it? I saw the surprise you made for Elif, Nilu replies, I listened to it. You lied to me about my sister. Why did you badmouth her to me? Did you think I wouldn’t love you if I was with Elif? He asks her to listen to him. She continues, you’re still using my family! You’re playing with us. You don’t love me. A person wouldn’t treat loved ones like an enemy.
#56 part 5
Metin says he can explain. Come to Rome tomorrow and let’s talk. Nilu snaps back, why, will you make me launder money, too? He tells her everything will change tomorrow. My father will go to prison and Elif will be free of me. There will be no need for Elif to get involved in dirty business any longer. This was the only way. I really care about Elif.
Nilu asks, how can I believe you? Believe me, he replies, don’t doubt for one second my love for you. We will go somewhere and build a completely different life. I will be Fatih from now on. Please come to Rome and I will prove this to you. She hangs up on him and returns the phone to the woman and threatens to call the police if she doesn’t leave.
Elif continues to explain the movie to Omer. They go on a scooter tour all around Rome. They go into a market but then the police catch them. Omer asks, do the police take the princess back to her country? Of course not, Elif replies, it’s a movie. The princess acts beautifully.
Ah, the princess is a good actor, Omer says, does she deceive the police? This story sounds very familiar. Well, the journalist has done no less, Elif explains. He conspires with a photographer friend to sell the story about the princess. Omer agrees that’s bad. It gets worse, Elif continues. They go to the mouth of truth, a relief sculpture in Rome. Rumor has it that if you think someone is lying, you take them to the mouth of truth. The person puts their hand in the mouth and if they have lied, the statue bites their hand. That’s where it gets interesting. Do you understand?
Omer reaches over and it looks like he’s going to remove something off Elif’s coat collar. He moves his hand up slightly and brushes her cheek. I’m trying, Omer replies.
And we are out.
Novelera - a belated thank you for writing up the Thursday episode! This is a very complex TN. I need all the help I can get.
Last night Sahin’s mother burst into tears after Sadaket left. Sadaket has that effect on people. Everybody feels worse after dealings with her. Sahin said he didn’t want his mother to find out that way. Find out what? What did I miss?
It’s hard to imagine Sadaket being loving to a husband, and it’s equally hard to imagine any man loving her.
The Spanish-language songs are annoying. They just don’t fit.
All that shooting guns into the air for the wedding - those bullets come back down. People can get killed that way.
I was surprised Alya had a wedding dress complete with veil. She made no bones about being a reluctant bride.
She was locked out of her own room! But she could sleep on a couch. And she didn’t have to rip up the nightie - I’m sure there were mens’ shirts in Cihan’s closet.
Maggie
I'm so sorry, I just realized I posted kpa to the wrong page! I'll post to the correct page later.
I won't have the Friday Lejos recap up until later tonight or maybe Sunday morning. My apologies again. Apparently not a good weekend for me! :)
Help! Since there was violence at the beginning of this show, I thought I’d just look at it until Monteverde came on. I didn’t pay close attention to details, just enjoyed the scenery and architecture and let the story wash over me.
But now I’m hooked of course and I’m belatedly trying to put together a character list. Here’s what I have so far, but I’m not sure it’s accurate. Please tell me any corrections/additions!
ALBORA
Family #1:
Mother Sadakat, dearly difunto father Azem
Siblings:
Cihan
Dearly difunto Boran. Widow Alya, son Deniz/Cihan
Kaya who loves cousin Zerrin
Nare who loves cousin Sahin but for some reason married abusive Ozkan
Ummu – nanny
Pakize – servant
Seyda – 1st wife of Cihan who was going to cut his throat.
Committed suicide. Was she a Baybar?
Henchies: Muzzafer (beard), Kadir (bangs)
Family #2
Ecmel in prison, Fidan
Siblings:
Sahin, loves cousin Nare
Zerrin, loved by cousin Kaya
BAYBARA
Nadim: father. Believes in forming alliances with enemies
Son: Demir
OTHERS:
Badahir: Alya’s slimy lawyer
Mine: Cihan’s girlfriend. Hospital administrator
I noted Hasan & Halis as “two big guys.” Are they henchies? If so, for whom? Hasan is the name of Sadakat’s brother.
Bravo, Maggie! Great job on listing characters we've seen so far.
I'm pretty sure Seyda was not a Baybars. This is because Demir wanted to marry her and even built a house for her.
Also, the whole Baybar thing is confusing to me. Maybe dondi can help us out. The cast list that I searched for with great difficulty was on the Wiki for its Turkish name: Uzak Sehir. I wanted to have it because I had decided to recap the premiere. That list uses the surname Baybars. So, sometimes it's Baybar, sometimes Baybars (as in the aforementioned cast list) and sometimes Baybara. Maybe that's Telemundo screwing up.
Hasan had one scene that I can remember. He was there when Deniz was carried up to meet his granny (leaving Alya behind appearing to show how unimportant she was). He's the biological brother of Sadakat. He seemed on the villainous side to me. Not sure why.
Halis Koroglu is a business associate of Cihan. Not positive, but he may be an officer in whatever company Cihan owns and is a principal in.
I tried to find a site with Turkish diacritical marks. It's been a struggle. But I managed to find the code for the diacritical mark called breve that appears often in Turkish names that end in glu or oglu. I think this means son of someone. I am able to get that g with the diacritical typed in a Word doc, but not here typing directly into Blogger. What works in Word is holding down the ALT key and typing 287.
FYI, I can get a Turkish keyboard (or Spanish, etc) on my iphone by clicking on the globe in lower left. Should be a way to find international keyboards on other devices.
Babachita
Is that using an i-phone, Babachita? My computer and phone use the Android system, and I don't see a globe on the screen of my phone.
Yes, Novelera. My iphone has a globe that lets me change keyboards.
I have a Mac, but haven’t found it on there. I’ll let you know if I find it.
I’ll check on our pc also. Probably tomorrow.
Babachita
The Google keyboard on Android that I use just recently moved the globe language symbol off the main keyboard screen onto a menu reached through the four "dots" upper left corner. Good thing as I kept hitting it b4 and accidentally switching to español or francais.
Anastasia
I was surprised to see Alya, who had agreed to the marriage, act so petulantly with such a sour expression. I'm surprised the official went through with the ceremony. I was also really surprised at the sexy gown she wore. Too revealing tor a Muslim wedding. I would have thought not appropriate. She could have worn something dignified, like second-time brides used to wear. Also when her room was locked she should just have gone back to Deniz' room.
Anastasia
This might be helpful for anyone interested in Turkish diacritical marks:
https://altcodeunicode.com/alt-codes-for-turkish-letters-with-accents-or-diacritics/
You can also add an alternate language keyboard to your Windows PC. I’ve installed Spanish and Turkish, but most of the time I don’t bother to switch. I’ll just use the ALT codes. And I’m lazy, too, so I don’t always use the diacritics when I should. I am more careful to use them when I am typing a real person’s name or titles (show, song, book).
I believe the correct family name is Baybars. We can’t always trust the captioning.
IIRC, Seyda was a Baybars. She was Suleyman’s daughter and Cihan was forced to marry her as one of the conditions to settle the feud. So Demir was in love with and planning to marry his first cousin.
#14 part 1
Sadakat declares that anyone who messes with her will burn! Glares are exchanged all around. Sahin has nothing to say. Sada, Cihan and Nare leave. Fidan breaks down. Sahin tells her he didn’t want her to find out like this. She sends him to look for Zerrin.
Kaya finds Zerrin out on the street first. She shouts for him to stay away from her. I hate you and your whole family! I knew you were unfair to my father, and I can’t believe I still ended up falling in love with someone so despicable. Kaya sadly shakes his head. Don’t make us pay for our family’s sins. Your mother did it, Zerrin answers, she hurt my father, and I’ll never forgive her. Don’t deny this.
What I can’t deny is that I love you, Kaya replies. Even if my uncle is guilty or if my mother is, it doesn't matter. My love for you is enough to overcome anything. If the world stops turning, you will still be the owner of my heart, Zerrin. She might be weakening a bit, but she tells Kaya, I don’t love you anymore. He asks, do you mean it? Maybe I never loved you, she replies. I only gave in because you pushed. Leave me alone. Sahin shows up—you heard her. Get out of here. Zerrin leaves with her brother.
Sada tells Alya she threatened Cihan with turning herself in to the police. I didn’t want you to get married. Lucky for you that Sahin came to the rescue. You used that to secure your place as my son’s fiancée. You’re smart and I underestimated you. If you marry, you will keep your life, but I wish you had died. You will be nothing but a walking corpse in this mansion.
Alya has a comeback—and you will always live under suspicion that I might seek revenge. Suspicion won’t kill you, but it will eat at your insides. Like maggots eating away at a tree. Neither woman blinks. Pakize brings Deniz to see his mom. Sada reminds Alya that the boy’s name is Cihan and she will make her learn that. She leaves. Deniz asks why granny is so mad. Alya says she doesn’t know.
Sada’s children want the truth from her. Have you ever heard me lie, she asks. I was a child, and he lied to me. He said we’d marry but he abandoned me. Cihan asks, did my father know this? Of course, Sada replies, I told him everything. Do you think I married your father for revenge? He knew what kind of person Ecmel was. Your father protected me and loved me. And I loved him very much. He made the Albora lands what they are, and when he was murdered, I swore to protect his legacy at all costs. It’s up to the 3 of you to keep the Albora lands.
Sada leaves and her children don’t know what to think. Kaya wonders who is telling the truth. Nare asks, what if Sahin is right? What if mom betrayed Ecmel Amca? Cihan says that’s nonsense. Our parents loved each other very much. I witnessed it and remember it. At least that part is true. Let’s see what else we find out.
They edited out a beautiful Turkish folk song (türkü).
Song: Turnam Gidersen Mardin'e/If You Go to Mardin, My Crane – Ayfer Vardar
YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRFuJE46SPc&list=RDxRFuJE46SPc&start_radio=1
if you drop down the description below the video, there’s an English translation.
The montage with the song shows a very emotional Sahin in the mountains, Nare crying in the Albora konak and returning home to Ozkan, Kaya crying outside Zerrin’s konak while she’s crying inside.
#14 part 2
Cihan comes to see Alya he asks for little Cihan. Alya answers, Deniz is resting. He asks her if he can sit. She says go ahead, you’ll do it anyway. He asks, how are you? She snarks, Oh, I’m doing very well.
Sahin knew your mother shot me, Alya says. He donated blood, Cihan replies, that’s why I told him. Alya notes, you were very close. What happened? What did Sadakat do to him… for him to bring the police here without thinking of Nare?
Cihan wants to know why she didn’t snitch on Sada. So I could marry you, she responds, you know that’s why I did it. Or else I would have lost my son. I heard your mother say she would turn herself in if we got married. She asked you to choose. What would you have done? Would you tell her we’d marry? Cihan doesn’t answer.
Alya supposes he wouldn’t have married her. Even if she went to the police, it wouldn’t have made a difference. You were the only witness, she says. Would you have testified? Say my mother shot her? She clicks her tongue. You would have made it disappear. Nothing would happen to your mother, and I would have lost my son. I’m willing to lose myself in this terrible darkness that surrounds your family.
Cihan says after you marry me, you’re going to remain in this darkness because you’ll be living in this mansion. Aren’t you scared my mother will try to hurt you again? Alya snickers, thanks to you all, I don’t feel anything anymore, so I’m not scared. Are you scared, she asks. I could kill you. Why didn’t you tell me? He tells her he doesn’t like talking about his past. And he didn’t think it was relevant. We are only getting married for your son, right Alya? There’s no other motive. This isn’t because you want revenge against my mother, is it?
Alya says that would be good. Cihan says she would regret it. She asks if that’s a threat. Never, he replies, it’s a warning. I’m telling you for your own good. Don’t try it. I mean it.
Next morning, Cihan has a decision to share with his family. Alya appears behind him. Alya and I are getting married. This is met with total silence and straight faces. Cihan continues, once Alya has recovered, she’ll get a report from the hospital. With that, we can ask the court to drop the charges, and then we’ll set a wedding date. It will be here.
Sadakat says, you’re going to marry even though Boran’s body is still warm? Cihan retorts, you were the one who insisted we get married, mother. [exactly!] What would you have done if we accepted then? Call it off? Especially after all that’s happened? We need all the Alboras to agree on this marriage. There will be no music, dancing, or celebrating. Wedding prep will begin today. Understood? Sadakat glares. She shoots a icy look at Alya and leaves. Nare and Kaya offer simple congratulations to Cihan and Alya.
Alya, Cihan, and Deniz go to Boran’s grave and place flowers. The boy asks, is my father looking at us now, Amca? Yes, that’s right, Cihan answers, he is with us. Deniz asks, will he stop being my father when you marry mom? Alya shakes her head no, and looks like she’s about to cry. Cihan replies, he will never stop being your father. That’s impossible.
#14 part 3
Deniz asks another question, so what will you be to me now? Your uncle, Cihan says, I’ll always be your uncle. More questions, my father won’t get mad, will he? Cihan tells the boy, your father entrusted you to me, so I’ll always be by your side. Your father cared for you and protected you, and I will do the same. I will raise you to be a very strong man. I know you will never love me how you loved him, but you will always be in my heart. Deniz answers, you’re in my heart, too, Cihan Amca. They hug.
Cihan tells Deniz to wait in the car with Muzzafer. He needs to talk to his mom. Alya doesn’t know what to say to Boran. She plays with the wedding ring on her finger. What do I do with this ring? Take it, Cihan. Take off the ring that Boran gave me in front of him. Cihan replies, you’ll never have to take off that ring. You will always be Boran’s wife to me. We see Sadakat watching from a car.
Wedding day. Table is set, the guests arrive, and food is served. Deniz looks cute in his blue suit and bow tie. Cihan greets guests. Alya is in her room, she stares into a mirror. Nare tells her she needs to get ready. Alya looks at the dress on her bed.
Nare is ready and comes out. Cihan asks for Sadakat. She’s watching from way up high on a terrace. Sahin and Zerrin drive up in a truck and must be watching at a distance.
Cihan comes to get Sada. The officiant is coming soon. Tell your future wife, she says, she’s the one who’s not ready. Kaya spots Ozkan arriving. Sada asks him to throw him out. Cihan says no, I invited him. Nare says she had asked Cihan, and he said yes. The more you exclude Ozkan the more aggressive he becomes. It would be stupid not to invite him. This is a wedding. Kaya says he’ll handle any trouble.
Kaya spots Sahin and Zerrin in the distance. Nare goes out to greet Ozkan, knowing Sahin will see. And if this wasn’t enough, Mine shows up.
Alya appears. [What do you think of her dress?]. in the original ep, we hear the theme song, “De Mardin”. Cihan walks over and offers his arm to her. They walk to the wedding table. Mine has tears in her eyes. Guns are fired. Guests applaud the couple.
The ceremony begins: esteemed guests, Cihan Albora from the Albora family and Alya Smith have applied to our municipality declaring they want to be married. Upon reviewing their declaration, no impediment to their marriage was found. Now, if you express this wish verbally in the presence of our witnesses and esteemed guests, I will fulfill your right to marry.
Do you Alya Smith, promise to stand by Cihan Albora in good times and bad, in sickness and in health, in wealth and poverty, until death do you part, to always love and respect each other, and do you accept Cihan Albora of your own free will, without being under any influence, in the presence of witnesses? Alya looks sad and hesitates. Mine looks hopeful. Sada glares. Alya nods and says yes. Applause.
Cihan is asked the same questions. Cihan quickly answers yes. Applause. Mine’s hopes are crushed. The witnesses, Halis and Erol, agree to the marriage. The officiant pronounces the couple husband and wife. Applause and here comes the celebratory gunfire. Alya disapproves of this, as her son is present. The wedding register is signed. We see Demir watching in the distance. The officiant hands Alya the wedding certificate and congratulates the couple. Alya plops the certificate on the table. Cihan picks it up.

#14 part 4
Time for the gold jewelry. Sada places rings on the newlyweds. Oh boy, Alya must kiss Sada’s hand. Sada places a ton of gold on Alya. Sada tells Cihan to kiss the bride. This is only a kiss on the forehead. Sada declares, may Allah grant you a long life together.
Sada doesn’t stop there. And I, Sadakat Albora, (Cihan tries to stop her from continuing) wish for my DIL, Alya Albora with my son Cihan Albora, to conceive a healthy and strong male grandchild for me as soon as possible. Alya and Cihan are horrified. Little Deniz looks very unhappy. Sada continues, I know that my DIL and my son Cihan will be blessed with a child that will form a part of our legacy.
Alya whispers to Deniz, this isn’t true. She wants Cihan to silence his mother. Alya tries to get away from female guests offering congratulations. Cihan shakes hands with the male guests.
Sadakat picks up Deniz and asks him why he looks so sad. He answers, grandma, you said mom is having a baby soon, and I don’t want her to. Why not, Sada says, don’t you want a brother? You could play together every day.
Alya runs over to Sada and demands she hand over Deniz. Cihan takes Deniz before an embarrassing scene starts. Deniz tells his mom he doesn't want her to have another baby. What will happen to me? Alya replies, that will never happen. You are my only son. My whole life. I promise.
Cihan stares disapprovingly at Sada. Why are you looking at me like that, she asks, he might be sad now, but he’ll be happy later. don’t I have the right to want more grandchildren? A child is the crowning glory of a marriage. He asks Sada to leave and she obliges. Cihan picks up Deniz and tells him this won’t happen. We already have our baby. There can’t be anyone but you. Deniz makes him promise. Cihan hands Deniz off to Kadir.
Mine comes forward to offer congratulations to Alya and Cihan.
Later, Alya still in her wedding dress, gives a kiss to sleeping Deniz. She exits the room. I’m not sure if she hears Ummu and Pakize in a bedroom, preparing it for the wedding night. Pakize pulls a hot red nighty from a chest. Ummu and Pakize come out and tell Alya they’ve prepared the bedroom, Cihan’s room, now it’s also hers. If you need anything, please tell us. Alya slowly goes up the stairs. It’s like she’s heading towards death.
Alya stands in the bedroom. She looks in the chest and sees the hot red number. She rips it apart and throws it on the floor. She leaves the room and runs down the stairs, throwing off her headpiece. Cihan walks by and picks it up. He sees her at the door of her bedroom. It’s locked.
Sadakat shows up. Having trouble with the door? She has the key. Could you have the wrong room? Understand that your place is with Cihan from now on. You are husband and wife, so fulfill your wifely duties.
And we are out.
Anastasia – so glad you’re watching with us! Yeah, that dress was showing a lot of shoulder.
Novelera – Thank you for checking out my list! I added Halis Koroglu but wonder why I had noted him along with Hasan as “big guys.” I don’t even remember from what scene. You remembered Hasan carried Deniz at one point, which makes me wonder if he’s just one of the employees of the Albora family. Kind of a low position for Sadakat’s brother!
Dondi – What does the Turkish title Uzak Sehir mean? Who is Suleyman? What’s up with all that gold Sadakat draped Ayla with?
I hugely appreciate all the detail in your excellent recap! I studied it carefully. I find this TN very confusing and need all the help I can get. Yeah, I know the Spanish-language ones are written in crayon in huge letters, but the few other Turkish ones I’ve now seen weren’t confusing.
l
Welcome to the patio, Anastasia!
Maggie, uzak means far or distant, şehir means city. I’ve seen the title translated as Distant City and Far City. Pick one. Suleyman was the leader of the Baybars family. He was killed by Boran.
We had a conversation over on the KPA posts about the gold given to the bride at her wedding. “Mehir” is supposed to give some financial security to the bride in case the marriage ends. Could also be given in jewels or property. Sadakat was really showing off.
Thanks, dondi, for another wonderful recap. And also for the info on obtaining diacritical marks in Turkish. I've been pretty obstinate about that in Spanish even when a main character had a name with one in it, and I was SO tired of doing the ALT____ every time his or her name was said in the dialogue.
Guess the Turks are fond of using the same trope the Latinos use. A deeply in love woman finds out something she doesn't like and immediately tells the guy she doesn't love him and probably never did [Zerrin to Kaya].
Sada knows her son well. She threatens him with turning herself in, well knowing he won't let her do it. How I would have loved his telling her "Go, ahead, Mom."
Sada: "Do you think I married your father for revenge?" [I 70% do. And I wonder if she'd be so deep, down dark if she'd been in a truly loving marriage. But apparently the kids thought that was true.]
I noticed that only recently have they inserted a less than terrific song in Spanish. For most of the dizi, we've heard Turkish music. And, as someone here noted, the famous Concerto de Aranjuez.
I have really loved the instant close relationship between Cihan and Deniz. It feels so genuine. Googling Ozan Akbaba (Cihan), I found a photo of him with his small son.
Hmmm. I wonder about that convenient hillside near the konak. I'm a bit surprised the Alboras don't have someone stationed there. Great spot for a sniper.
Is Sada capable of love? I'm starting to get the feeling that Deniz is mostly a pawn to her. We saw her yank away his phone, causing him, according to the staff, to sob and then sicken. Now she announces a replacement kid in front of him to spite Alya and Cihan. And, when he first arrived there, her grasping of him may have been more about an heir, rather than the child himself.
What Anastasia and Dondi said!!!
(About keyboards etc) I took a look at my mac and pc. They both have a way to change keyboards but the lettering on the keyboard wouldn’t change so a bit confusing. My iphone shows the keyboard on the screen and it changes with the language.
If I find anything else, I will share here!
