Episode 116 #1 of 7

We start with a henchie from Tayyar finding Husseyn asleep on a park bench. When he tries to rouse him, Husseyn sits up with a pistol drawn. Henchie tells him to relax, they have been looking for him, no bad intentions. There must have been a misunderstanding. Husseyn says yeah, sure, a misunderstanding, because you will be killing me. Henchie tells him Mr. Tayyar wants us to help you. The police are after you. Henchie tells him he needs to come with him or the cops will find him that evening. Paranoid Husseyn’s eyes dart back and forth.

At the mansion, Asli brings Elif something to drink and asks if she is feeling better. Elif tells her that while at the cemetery she could see her mother and father and Bahar. It was last year, and it all seemed so real. Asli tells her those days are behind us. She tells her to think about today, the happiest day of her life.
Asli: You can’t be crying, you are about to marry. I promise Columbo will come and he will take care that you won’t be crying.
Elif: He will come, right?
Asli: What are you saying? Columbo would never miss this day. That man is crazy for you. Come on, get better, OK?
Asli leaves the room. Elif is still looking very unhappy, holding her drink and looking at her phone. It goes off with a message from Omer: Happy Birthday, Signorina. It has been wonderful knowing you. I will be thankful until my death every moment of happiness that there has been.
At a barber shop, Omer and Arda are getting their hair styled. Omer has a similarly serious expression to that of Elif. He remembers a previous conversation in the barber shop with Husseyn.

FLASHBACK: (at the barber shop)
Husseyn: You are my soul, you are very dear to me, Omer, and you know it.
Omer: And you are my brother. (Omer kisses Husseyn’s hand.)

Omer is still picturing this in his mind as his hair is being readied for the wedding. The barber asks if he wants the usual or a “groom shave?” Omer doesn’t answer, and Arda looks over. He calls his name and tells him people are talking to him. He asks if something is wrong. Omer doesn’t answer, so Arda asks the barber to give them a few minutes first. The barber agrees and both barbers leave. Arda looks directly at Omer.
Arda: Omer, this is not good. Snap out of it! You need to relax a bit.
Omer: The truth is I don’t know what to do.
Arda: You still haven’t decided if you’re going to talk about Husseyn before the wedding?
Omer listens to Arda, then throws the cape aside, takes his things and walks out, slamming the door.

At the mansion, a hairdresser is finishing up styling Elif’s hair. He tells her they hadn’t tried out anything before and wonders what she would like. She sighs and tells him he knows what she likes. She tells him to use his imagination, and it will be fine. He agrees and goes to get some tools.
Asli: Psst, look at me. You are acting very strange. What’s up? Are you sick? Might you be pregnant and haven’t told me?
Elif smiles ruefully at the joke: Omer is hiding something from me, Asli. I don’t know what it is. But I think Pelin and Arda know. They won’t tell me.
Asli: Well, they are looking for Husseyn.

Elif: I tried to think that maybe he’s sad for all that happened with Husseyn, but I saw him last night and he was very strange. He looked at me differently. He was distant. I’ve never seen him like this.
Asli: Perfect, then let’s do something. I’m going to call Columbo and ask him why you are so sad on this day, the most important of your life and besides it’s your birthday.
Elif begs her not to call him.
In walks Nedret, talking with Elvan by phone. She hangs up and sighs: I can’t believe it. I never knew people so calm in my whole life. It’s incredible. There are only two hours and they aren’t ready yet nor have they had their hair done.
Elif: And Omer, where is he, Aunt?
Nedret: You don’t have to worry about him. He’s all dressed and is getting his hair done.
Elif smiles at this.
Asli: See, there’s no reason to get so worried.

At Arda’s, Pelin is putting on makeup when her phone rings. It’s Arda.
Arda: Pelin, Omer is feeling bad. He came to the barber, but after five minutes, he left.
Pelin asks if he has told Elif yet about Husseyn. Arda tells her no.
Pelin: Let’s leave them alone awhile. You come here and we can go to the ceremony together.
Ipek has been listening and asks what Arda said.
Pelin: Omer hasn’t told her anything yet. Arda was with him but then Omer left. Ipek, Omer is very bad, he is devastated. For all that he wants to, he can’t find an exit for this situation. He doesn’t want to lie to Elif anymore. Husseyn will always come between them. Please help him, Ipek.
Ipek: But the only thing I want is to be a friend of Omer. I don’t want people to misunderstand.
Pelin: Ipek, then do a favor to Omer as a friend. You can’t imagine how desperate he feels.
Ipek: I don’t want to put myself between them. Omer won’t be happy if I do that.
Pelin: Don’t you see that he’s already unhappy? Isn’t that obvious? And, why does it matter so much to you what Omer thinks, or Elif? Ipek? Are you still in love with Omer? Tell me.
Ipek: This is absurd, Pelin, of course I’m not. That would be crazy. I’m going to go check on Yaz.
Pelin thinks while she sits and waits.

At a different place from earlier, Husseyn enters and asks why they have moved. The henchie says it was picked for him especially because the other place was no longer safe for him. Here you will stay so we don’t have any problems. Husseyn agrees and starts to take off his jacket. Henchie offers to do anything else he wants. Husseyn say no. Then he asks what the date is. Henchie tells him March 12. Husseyn recognizes the date, finishes taking his jacket off, and looks very sad.

Omer is back at Elvan’s house, standing below looking up at the house and well.

FLASHBACK: Adult Husseyn asks Adult Omer if he remembers the stairs they are on. He reminds him of when Omer was 6 years old and had a ball and some pepper bread. Both hands were occupied and Adult Omer starts laughing, remembering that he tripped at the top of the stairs and fell, taca taca taca down the stairs. Husseyn remembers that Elvan yelled saying I should run to help you, but I couldn’t’ catch you. Adult Omer tells him that Husseyn and Elvan are the people he most trusted in the world. He continues, telling him he knows he will help him when he falls. Husseyn pats him on the shoulder. Then he offers him a hand so they can go back up. Husseyn tells him to resolve the murder so that he finally can get it out of his head.

It’s hard to tell how far back that flashback was.
Omer sits on a step, smiling at the memory. Then his expression gets more sober. As he sits there a feminine hand reaches out to him, he looks up and smiles, but we don’t see who it is. She is dressed nicely so might be Ipek, Elif, or Sibel.

Elif is getting into her bridal dress, helped by her sisters. They put a striking gold headpiece that looks like something she designed. It gives her an exotic look. The sisters smile at one another.

Husseyn is pacing around the new location. He is tempted to use the telephone and dials. He has called a flower shop. He tells them he wants to make a flower order. They ask what to put on the card: For the wedding of Demir and Denizer from their brother, Husseyn Demir.
The florist agrees to the order.

Back at the mansion, the girls are putting on the veil, hooking it to the exotic headpiece. They are pleased with their work. Nilufer says it’s like Cinderella. They joke about feeling envy of the princess and mention the coach turning into a pumpkin and the prince turning into a frog. Elif asks who the older princess is. Asli says she will be the bad witch on a broom. There’s a knock at the door and Nedret oozes into the room. She says she is sorry to interrupt but there’s someone there to see Elif. In walks Ipek. Elif manages to hold on to her smile. Ipek stays very solemn, however.

At the hospital, we see Tayyar still hooked up to various machines. He looks really bad and is obviously groggy. He calls for the nurse in a very weak voice. I wonder if he has a button to use, but he doesn’t seem to know about it. He is struggling hard to breathe.

Nedret takes the sisters out, leaving Elif and Ipek. Elif says all she needs are the rings and goes to get them. She tells Ipek she appreciates her being there.
Ipek: I actually came because I have something important to tell you.
Elif: It can’t wait until after? Guests are arriving and I have a surprise for Omer and want to be downstairs when he comes.
Ipek: I only need a couple of minutes.
Elif tries again: We can talk after the ceremony, OK?
Elif starts to leave. Ipek: Omer is hiding something from you.
This stops Elif. She turns to Ipek.
Elif: Do you know what it is?
Ipek: I thought Omer would have told you, but he couldn’t. This is why I decided to tell you myself. This is hard for me, but you need to know it. The father of my son isn’t Serhat; Yagiz is Omer’s son. Omer has known about this for a while, and that is why he hasn’t been the same with you. You probably knew that something was going on. Omer wasn’t able to tell you. So, that is why I had to come.
Elif is very impactada.
Ipek runs down the stairs to leave the mansion. Nedret catches her at the front door.
Nedret: You did the right thing for everyone, I promise. I am very grateful.
Nedret holds out her hand for Ipek to shake. Ipek looks at it, gives Nedret a hateful look, and turns around and leaves.

Henchie comes in looking for Husseyn who is sitting on the couch. He tells him he has good news. Mr. Tayyar has awakened. Husseyn finds that encouraging. He says we need to send you far away and you will be leaving the country in a pair of hours. Husseyn starts to grin.

At the mansion, Asli’s son is walking around looking out the windows. It sounds like the guests are all there. Levent walks into the living room. Nilufer greets him. He says he might be early, but Nilufer says only a few guests are missing. Suddenly they hear Asli calling out: Elif, wait! Elif runs down the stairs in her wedding dress, out the front door, and down the stairs. Nedret catches Asli and tells her to wait. Asli says she needs to go with her. Nedret gets very loud and tells her to do what she says and leave her alone. The sisters look at one another and still walk outside to watch Elif from the garden balcony.

Husseyn shaves, changing his facial hair. He colors his hair.

As Elif runs along the water, she casts off her veil and runs past an Istanbul dog, until she finds Omer, standing along the water, not dressed for a wedding. They look at one another. She walks past him. He calls out her name. She turns to look at him.

At the mansion, Nedret is still trying to keep the sisters there, but they run out to find Elif. Asli can see Elmer on the waterfront from the garden balcony. Asli says, excitedly: Look, there’s Omer! Good job, Columbo.
Asli is smiling. The girls are both smiling and say: Problem solved.
Nedret: Do you really believe that? Obviously, there was a problem between them. Ipek came this afternoon and talked with Elif and things aren’t right.
Nilufer: No one can put themselves between Omer and Elif, aunt. Once they are together, no one can separate them.
Asli says she can’t say it as romantically as Nilufer, but she agrees. The girls smile at their aunt.
Thus dismissed, Nedret walks away to greet some guests.

Omer and Elif look at one another.
Elif: I was coming here to ask what we’re going to do. I notice you’re not dressed as a groom. Looks like you made the decision without me. You stopped our wedding in both our names. Can you tell me what the reason is? I don’t even have the right to ask you. You stole that, as you stole all my dreams, my hopes, and also my illusions. My father and you made my birthday a cursed one, Omer.
Elif starts pushing hard him in the chest, trying to get a reaction. Tell me something! It doesn’t matter if it’s a lie or not, just say something, please.
Omer: Elif,
Elif: I thought you wanted a different life, without lies, that both of us were looking for the same things, that we would never hide anything, Omer. What happened with those promises? Tell me something. Tell me what you know. We started this together and we are going to end it together. That’s how it must be. I don’t know why you’re doing this. Just tell me the truth so we can end this thing properly, Omer.
Omer: I didn’t want it to be like this. I had no choice, Elif. It’s better to stop now, before we go forward. It would have been more painful later. (A tear rolls down Omer’s cheek.)
[I am noticing here that they are talking about two different things. She thinks he has broken up because of Yaz, and he is really breaking up because his brother killed her father.]
Elif looks at him muy impactada.
We hear a sad Turkish song while they look at one another. The sisters are watching from their garden balcony.
Nilufer: It looks like Elif is crying.

Asli: No, they aren’t a normal couple. They will come back to us hand in hand. Omer hasn’t come to end the relationship, did he?
Nilufer: Asli, look at Omer. He isn’t even wearing his bridegroom clothing. Allah, please help them be happy. Break the curse of the unlucky Denizer. We haven’t been able to be like this, let them be happy.
Elif looks at Omer for a long time and then walks past him. He turns to watch her, his face showing pain, love, and I think, admiration.
She walks past her fallen veil, leaving it symbolically behind. She walks slowly up the stairs to be met by her sisters, who help her walk the rest of the way.
Elif agrees to go inside.

Down below, Omer walks up to the veil. He picks it up, inhales its aroma, and smiles wistfully, saying: Elif, forgive me, please.

Upstairs, the marriage official asks Nedret how long it will be because he has another event. Nedret asks him to wait just a little bit longer. Levent is watching all this closely, and Filiz says she will find out what happened. Elif and sisters walk into the area where the ceremony was to be held. Elif, always so strong and poised, speaks to the guests:
Thank you for waiting, but today there won’t be any wedding.
Elif turns and leaves.

Husseyn, looking very different and distinguished (except for his bruises) with dark hair and mustache and dressed in a vested suit, walks into the main room. He tells the henchies he is ready and to call Tayyar. The henchies smile at him. Husseyn asks why they are laughing. Do they see a clown? He tells them not to waste any more time and to call Tayyar. Ask him if the plane is ready. He watches one henchie making a call. Husseyn continues to be paranoid, and I think with good reason.

At the mansion, Elif arrives in her room. She sits on the bed, trying to process all of this. She looks at her reflection in the mirror. She reaches up and removes her headpiece.

We see Tayyar barely alert in his hospital bed. He calls out for the doctor in a very pitiful little voice. The doctor asks him what he wants. He asks the doctor what happened. Did he lose his kidney? The doctor tells him that unfortunately he has lost the kidney. Tayyar mumbles that Fatih was a good shot. He then asks his condition. Will he continue to live?
Doctor: You are better now. There were critical hours before this. It’s a miracle you are still alive, Mr. Tayyar. You might have died, sir, but don’t worry, we will find a kidney for you.
Tayyar: I hope so. I have things to do, I can’t be wasting my time. I intend to live for a very long time.
Tayyar cackles a laugh and the doctor joins him.
A nurse peeks in and tells the doctor that some police are there wanting to talk with Tayyar. Tayyar tells her to let them in. The doctor reminds him he needs rest.
Two policemen walk in and tell him they hope he will get better. They tell him they need his information to take the investigation further.
Tayyar: That’s fine. It’s our duty always to help the police.
Cop 1: Who shot you?
Tayyar: I don’t know. I didn’t see.
Cop 2: You did see, Mr. Tayyar.

Tayyar: How could you know better than I? I said I didn’t see.
Cop 1: The street cameras saw it. According to our information, you were in front of the man who shot you, and you were talking to him.
Copp 2: We have testimonies as well. The man who shot you is Fatih Dundar. Do you want to file charges against your son?
Tayyar’s eyes go back and forth while he considers this.

At Elvan’s, we see Elvan and Melike seated in the living room as Fatma rushes in. She tells Elvan to put some ice on her head. She put some medicine on it. Menthol will calm the pain. Elvan thanks her and starts to put the scarf on her head. Suddenly, they hear loud yelling from outside. Omer is using a pickaxe to break up the stones of the well. He is yelling with every stroke. Fatma and Elvan watch from their window. We get a view from inside the well, as rocks fall inside.
Omer hears Elif in his head saying: He’s honest and valiant, like your family. If I were you, I wouldn’t want to ruin this.

Elif is still sitting on her bed in her wedding dress. She hears Omer in her head saying: Elif, this isn’t a romance, a simple love. You are my life. You are my love; you are everything for me. The destiny of that night united us. If we hadn’t held each other’s hand, we wouldn’t have gone forward. That’s how it is. Relationships may seem the same, and memories can react with one another, but this life is the real thing. You are my life, Elif. I can’t imagine my life without you. I can’t breathe without you. I can’t live without you.

We see Omer still trying to destroy the well and making good progress. Melike starts to go join him, but Elvan tells her she will go. Elvan arrives as he is throwing stones in by hand. He looks at his hand with a stone, yelling at it: How could you do this to me? (Over and over.)
Elvan: Son, wait, Omer, stop and leave this. Let’s …
Omer: Leave me in peace, leave me.
Elvan: I can’t let my son hurt his soul. Please, don’t do this, son. Come, get up and leave this.
Elvan reaches to help him up: My poor son, you are so wounded. If you say that you love her so much, why did you cancel the wedding? Why? Have you poisoned your heart and your mind during so much time? Tell me.
Omer: I’m burning. I don’t want you to burn with me.
He walks away from Elvan.
Elvan: If you take one more step, I will erase you from my heart. Now that you are a man, you thought you could do things behind my back. All my life I taught you good things, to you and your brother. Now look at me in my face and tell me what’s going on. Why did you leave Elif in her wedding dress? Omer, if you don’t answer me, I will go see Elif. She will tell me all she knows. Whatever your problem is, she will tell me.
Elvan starts walking up to the house.
Omer: Elif knows nothing.
Elvan turns around in surprise.
Omer: Today, I destroyed the love of my life. I was an idiot, Mom.
Elvan: Tell me, son, why? She gave you a new life. You breathe thanks to her. Omer, you looked so happy with her.

Omer tries to get words out. He finally speaks: I found the murderer of her father. The same that killed the daughter of Fatma, the murderer of Sibel. I found what I’ve been looking for all year, and it was in front of my eyes all the time, Mom.
Elvan is very impactada: Omer?
Omer: My eyes were blind as well as my mind.
Elvan: It was Husseyn, the one who murdered them?
Elvan starts to rub her left arm, not a good sign. She grabs at her heart
Omer runs to her as she falls to the ground.
Melike and Fatma are watching from the window and react! Fatma tells Melike to run as she follows. Omer hollers for Melike. He calls for an ambulance.

Back at the mansion, Elif is putting memories into a box, lots of pictures of them as a couple. She pauses and looks at one of the pictures.

FLASHBACK: Elif remembers Omer proposing on bended knee in front of her sisters and Nedret: Let my life be combined with yours. Do you want to marry me, Elif? She kneels down to his level and tells him: Yes, Signor, I’ll be your wife.

Elif throws that picture in the box as well. She also finds the DVD of Roman Holiday.

FLASHBACK: Elif and Omer are spending the day sightseeing in Rome and are at the Bocca della Verita (Mouth of Truth) statue. Omer laughs and tells her she has brought him to the wrong place. They kiss in front of the statue.

Elif is about to put the DVD in the box when she finds some airplane tickets.

FLASHBACK: There is a note from Omer about his New Year’s resolutions for 2015, last New Year’s: During the week we will go to the movies, and also to a concert. The rest of the time while in Rome he leaves to her to plan, since it is her second home. She also finds receipts for the wedding band.

She puts these things in the box as well. She notices her engagement ring on her hand as she is filling the box. She removes her rings and holds them, remembering.

Thanks, Babachita! I kind of hated this episode but your recap is fab!

I hate that Ipek did the dirty work!!! I was hoping she wouldn't and she shouldn't have! I can't believe any Pelin encouraged her to do it! It's so wrong! Elif is right, Omer is being a coward and his friends line up to support him?? It's one thing that Omer thought of it - he's shocked and hurting and not thinking correctly - but everyone else should have encouraged him to do the right thing. Instead Pelin pressures Ipek to do the wrong thing to 'help' Omer! It's so cringeworthy. Ipek should have gone and told Elif the truth.... Omer can't bring himself to do it, he needs Ipek to intervene? Fine, intervene with the truth!

I really didn't like Nilu or Asli's makeup in this episode, they both looked garish especially Asli. They are beautiful girls, but they looked harsh, I guess it's a visual cue of how we feel about the wedding??

Huso might be paranoid for good reason, but I think if they want to kill him now, it's probably because of the trouble he's given them. Though Tayyar is capable of anything, I'm somewhat surprised he pretended not to know he was Fatih who shot him, but only a little.
