El Dragón #20, 10/25/19: Provoking Pacheco, Peligros and Pigmenio

Good Friday my fellow Patio Patrons. Another end of week recap of El Dragon leaves up picking up the pieces of the Pachecos as well as Hector’s car.

Why Tacho called to give Hector warning, I am not sure, as El Pig was told by Duarte to take care of him. I can only guess that the only motive here is to not yet kill off the character. However, the impression this leaves on Hector will either make him much more affable to the friendship he has with Miguel, despite his ties to the dark side, or the opposite, make him hate everything that has to do with it. We will have to wait and see.

In Ciudad Jimenez there is a meeting between Miguel and Sandro (El Jefe de los Guachos) the other gang in the area. Sandro begins with saying that he heard what happened, and that they cannot permit that kind of activity in their area. Which is when Miguel suggests they come to an agreement to protect the area as well as the transport coming in and out. Sandro asks him what he is asking in return, Miguel tells him to name a price. Sandro tells him no price, but that he wants in on the business, he has heard around that Miguel Garza pays his partners very well and wants a piece of the pie. Miguel agrees, and they have a deal.

We pick up with Catalina waking up in an empty bed the next morning. She finds Francisco trying to contact Ambar on his phone and suggests he go back home. Evidently Ambar is trying to get his attention since she wants him to feel guilty and is being successful. An irritated Francisco admits that he feels guilty and is worried Ambar might talk to his nephews. Even more he wonders how Catalina can be so cut and dried about it  all.

As they leave Catalina's house, Alejandro wants to take Leonor to his jewelry  business to show her around and return the ring.  She wants to go to the Rodolfo Lazar lecture. He is a famous photographer and she wanted to meet him but now all of the tickets are sold out. Alejandro thinks that his mother with her influence could get her a meeting with Lazar. As they are talking,  José Carlos comes out agitated looking for the car keys. Alejandro tells him they are where they always are: in the car and tells him he cannot drive in the state he is in. José Carlos gets in anyway. Leonor jumps in the passenger seat and  tells him he does not have the right to put the lives of others at risk and that only he is the one who is responsible for the situation he is in and how to fix it. That gives José Carlos something to think about.

El Dragón #19, 10/24/19: In Which The Payback's Not Worth The Playback & Hec Needs a New Car

Miguel looks up from the video screen.  "--Where is Ricardo (Sr. Finances)?"  They ordered me to kill him, he tells Mig and Peligros.  Guajolote is the traitorous dog of a messenger who Peligros wants to kill.  "--It was me or him."  (Hmm.  Now that's something Miguel can relate to, considering his little chat-spat with Adela earlier.)  "--They killed the men.  I am sorry, Patrón."  "--Do my business partners know?"  Nope.  Ok.  Mig nixes Peligros and pistola since Guajo is the only one who's been inside since the takeover and knows the layout.  Leave him go."  Peligros growls to Guajo that he may have escaped this but he's still going to be bait.  (Viewerville ponders the possibilities.)

Ade wants to help somehow but Mig finally puts his foot down.  Jime wonders what's happened.  After Mig walks away Ade answers her that there's been killing and it isn't about to stop soon.

Mig walks outside on his way to his private plane; they're flying to CD Jimenez.  The vagrant, aka, bum who sits by the building day after day takes mental notes and Guajo must give Mig the details.  He calls Tacho and gives him the news.

Back at the ranch, Old Tati brings Dora a trago of tequila and secretly cuts the ties around her writsts.  Los Pacheco are feasting after the bloodbath they've just finished.  They get the word that Los Garza are on the way.

Cuna de Lobos, Capítulo 4 Thurs. 10/24/19

An Anonymous contributor has graciously provided the Thursday recap. Whoever it might be, we thank AnonFri for stepping up. How about a round of virtual applause, and may this contributor not stay Anonymous too long.

Alejandro visits Leonora’s humble home that evening. He informs her he also has his own apartment and that he really doesn’t always live with his family. He’s only there now because of his mother. It seems she asks him how he’s feeling about his father’s death, and he says well.

Gélica is giving Catalina a massage. When she lowers the nightgown strap Catalina pulls the sleeve of her cover back and ends the session.

Leonora tells Alejandro she’s never met anyone who’s been on top of an elephant. He hands her his phone to show proof (was he with Jose Carlos?) She asks about his brother. Did they ever try other forms of therapy for him? Alejandro receives a phone call and Leonora gets someone at the door. Luis shows up with a paper bag. Alejandro asks if everything was resolved regarding his job. He says yes, to thank Catalina for that. Alejandro lets Luis know he mostly helped him because of Leonora.

In the countryside of CD Jimenez at Rancho de los Garza, while Dora and her head CEO/financial advisor are working on the monthly finances or reports for the trucking business, the Pacheco posse surround the place, cut off electricity and Internet for the ranch, and summarily murder all the guerrerros/security teams they come across.  ( Man, these people Dora's got working for her are such losers it's a wonder Damberto managed to survive at the head of the syndicate as long as he did.)

Meanwhile, in CDMX, aka la DF, poor Jorge, the poor little lamb, is lost.  He gets bullied, beaten and rolled by a gang of young thugs.  His broken processor is also stolen.  So, they get away with a phone and a hunk a junk with a few pesos thrown in.

And we continue with our twisted tale:

At Catalina's house, Gélica notices a spot of blood on Catalina's blouse. Catalina sees her staring at it and tells her that she stained it but doesn't remember how. She adds that Gélica is to throw it away because she will never be able to get the stain out. Gélica looks oddly upset as she leaves the room with the blouse in hand.

El Dragón #17, 10/22/19: One Benevolent Act; Will there be more Betrayal?

We begin with Miguel and Peligros walking into this bar run by some cartel thugs, where there seems to be forced prostitution going on. Pig and Tacho are watching from the balcony. He is greeted by someone who says, “So you are the famous Japanese person.” They sit down and ask Miguel how it is he does it, laundering the money. They call out the “girls” who obviously look forced and don’t want to be there. The “girls” are ordered to dance and one tells Miguel she is pregnant and to help her get out of there.

Back at the office, Jimena approaches Adela who is pouring herself a cup of coffee. “So how was everything in Miami?” says Jimena. Adela says, “Work was good. But the enjoyment was everything.” They sit down with their coffee and Jimena confesses her doubts to Adela since Adela was not a professional race car driver and only a chauffeur. Adela says the mission was a success, but Jimena says you don’t need a doctorate to use an accelerator. Then Adela opens a packet of sugar and sprinkles into Jimena’s coffee. “What are you doing?” says Jimena. “Just trying to take away some of the bitterness in you.” Says Adela.

Cuna de Lobos, Capitulo 2 Martes 10/22/19: Achilles' Heel

Everyone has their weaknesses, no matter who they are. The key to protecting yourself is never to trust anyone to know them. High society – or what passes for it these days – is just as much a minefield as the corporate world or a war one. In our tale no one knew this better than Catalina Creel. Yet eventually someone will know hers. Only her arrogance protects her from knowing this. – D.D.

Catalina returned to her office in the dark, the middle of the night. It was the perfect atmosphere for her to review her thoughts. When one kills for the first time, one is afraid. But when one learns to do it precisely, afterwords one feels nothing.

Vlad of Novotech was being threatened with the end of his daughter's life.

Cuna de Lobos Lunes 10/21/19 Gran Estreno: Augustus Falls

Romulus and Remus were suckled by the same she-wolf. This was not true of José Carlos and Alejandro Larios and not because they were not twins. While they shared a father they had different mothers. Gloria, the first wife of Carlos, was the mother of José Carlos who accutely felt her loss having been rejected by his stepmother, a one-time Circe named Catalina Creel.
It has been some time since I've brought you tales of those who think themselves gods or at the very least above all rules of society. They see money less as evidence of status than as a means to any end they seek. It is the one commodity that is universally understood as well as desired. – D.D.

Late one night in Acapulco Carlos Larios struggled in the water as his wife, Catalina, radioed for help. “Help! Help! My husband fell overboard.” She heard him break the surface and struggle to breathe.

La Usurpadora - 1998 and 21 years later!

Hi LU Patio. On the heels of our recently concluded LU remake, I thought I’d do this post talking about the original LU and continue the discussion of some of the topics we touched on here throughout our whirlwind series!

Fun fact: La Usurpadora that aired in 1998 was one of the first novelas I watched. I lived outside of the United States back then and TNs were a rarity there, so this was one of my favorite ones for a long time. Graciously, my tastes have changed over the last couple of decades. Nonetheless it was such a great trip down the memory lane to remember the original LU over the past month with this great remake.

So without further ado, let’s take a look! Before we start though: A SPOILER WARNING. If you haven’t seen LU 1998, but are planning to watch it, this post will contain some plot spoilers, so maybe avoid it until you have a chance to catch up with the original.

El Dragon #15, 10/18/19: The Not So Amazing Race or Tired Tires

We left Chisca on the point of an overdose and Miguel looking at Adela, as if to question her loyalty, after finding the bugged pen at the end of last night's episode.

Today we start with Valentin trying to wake Chisca up. But rather than try to revive her when she is unresponsive, or take any emergency action, he gets dressed and bails! What a coward!! I can think of other more appropriate words, but not sure how G rated this needs to be.  Jorge sees Valentin leave the pool house and finds Chisca unconscious and immediately tries to help. He calls Angel to come for Chisca. I am unsure why he calls Angel first and not just an ambulance.

Carlos starts out his day fending off the press, as he tries to get into his car. Pascual, who must get triple pay for all these extra shifts he is pulling lately, is right there to tell the press that no questions will be answered and to help Carlos get into the car. Carlos goes to the office and finishes the conversation with Gema, where they plan his resignation announcement. Gema is hurt that she is not the one he is choosing as a life partner, but wishes him well.

Guajolote is waiting outside the hotel across the street as earlier planned, gun in hand, ready to shoot Date Rape Dude, aka Valentin, pass Go, and collect his 20, 000 pesos.  However, just as he's about to do the deed he gets a look at Chisca looking worriedly in his direction.  She maneuvers herself between Val and Guajo's gun.  Guajo cannot shoot as she pushes Val into the lobby and has him take her to his room.

Somewhere along the line between dinner with his sister and Valentin, Miguel has managed a date with Jimena.  He's giving her a lift home; she explains she's trying to seduce him and lays a sizzling long liplock on him.  He smiles enigmatically and replies she's enticing, but he's not looking for love in his life ever again; they work with each other, and she is engaged to Cesar, right? Yep, but let her be the one to play dangerously.....  She slithers out of the car and into her building.

El Dragon #10, 10/11/19: An Auction, A Hospital and Madrid…Oh My!

It’s Friday night ladies and gentlemen and we left Peligros last night in peligro. Epig, had managed to figure out enough about what Miguel was doing to steal his money. He may not be the dumbest thug around, but his impatience and impulsiveness make it seem otherwise. He is so sure that Miguel is going to fail and at the same time won’t stop attempting against his life or his plans. Doesn’t sound like the actions of a sure man to me. So what is Miguel to do? Jimena is bidding at the auction and as of this moment, the money to bid with is gone.

Tonight’s episode picks up right where we left off with Miguel trying to call out to Peligros in the middle of the auction, and keep his cover at the same time.  On a side note, for someone trying to pull his family into the legal side of the business, he seems to have an extremely good understanding of how to operate on the dirty side. Shell companies, money laundering, hacking, blackmail…and Miguel is supposed to be the good guy? Just saying…

El Dragón #9, 10/10/19: Ready, Set, Go, Or You Bet Your Life!

As we begin we note Miguel remembering his meeting with the members of The Garza Gang 2.0: "--You all know what you have to do."  Hacker Team tinkles the keys at top speed, careful to check each and every screen's speedy DOSsed lines of program and......"DONE!"  Jimena dons a black wig.  "No mistakes, no raising of suspicions.... "  Peligros and Sr. Advisor dig up buried bags of bills, American.  Sr. A. gripes it isn't Euros.  Peligros says he's only following orders.  (Purposely over-inflated Euros don't work in the U.S. of A. dumbs!t.  Most of N.America insists on using good ol' American greenbacks,  as the writers should know.  Or when in Rome.....)

Adela drives Mig to an apartment building where Mr. Pol-Carlos-- lives.  Mig receives the financial information (tributario) he needs to negate one of his possible competitors. The first is La Muralla who always gets what he sets his sights on.  His contact is expecting Mig's call.  Carlos wants to re-emphasize that he's being pressured by his associate/s (Who? Oh.  His one associate: Epigemio?).  They stand to lose everything if this venture fails.  Mig assures him with the report he's been given nobody will lose a centavo.

As the elevator doors begin to close two guns from Sergei's goons manage to poke through.  Miguel and Karina are looking at cooked goose dinner--theirs--but Mig has hidden talents he was taught in the orient and plies them now.  Both goons (lookin' like midget versions of fans leftover from an '80's ZZ Top concert) are taken by surprise (not to mention dreamy crispy creamy Karina) as he two-hand triple throws them (is that a judo term?) upside down and out and onto the floor long enough to escape them and Sergei, and to meet up with Adela in the parking garage as planned.  They drive to have their lunch with Ruso numero uno -Alexi?--after all.    Alexi is totally down with Miguel's operation and they seal the deal over Mexican pizza and vodka shots?

La Usurpadora - Capitulo 18 - Booze and Drugs and a Funeral

Paola is still asking Olga to say her name when the episode starts, but she turns it around quite drastically by the end, channeling her inner Maleficent. She instructs Tina to proceed with the funeral arrangements and tells her that she will contact Paulina. Naturally not only is that a lie, but she also calls Manuel to tell him of the news and orders him to prevent Paulina from finding out. At her command he tells Paulina that Olga and Paola left the city for a while and are incommunicado. For some unknown reason Paulina, who spent the better part of the episode looking for a cell phone (there seems to be a shortage of those in their residence) to call home and then dialing non-stop, seems to have believed him. Additionally looks like no one questioned Manuel’s giant black eye, so Mexico must be lenient on such things in Presidential households.

El Dragón #7, 10/8/19: It’s not Personal, it’s just Business!

We begin with Miguel and Jimena meeting and Jimena accepting Miguel’s offer. She puts her purse on the table in front of her and immediately, Miguel opens the purse and takes out her pistol, disarming it. “I want an explanation” says Miguel. “Do you always carry a gun in your purse?” She apologizes and says that if she is going to work in illegal business, she has to protect herself. Miguel responds by telling her she is working in finance, not as a hitman. He further explains that her security is on him and then gives her a pen to sign the contract. “Boy, you sure know how to impress a lady,” she says. The secretary comes in and says someone is waiting outside for Miguel.

The business consultant who came to see Miguel discusses the different type of business that he can run from there. An engineering business, a construction business, and ecological business among others. Miguel says, “I need the Russians.”

El Dragon #5, 10/4/19: The Truth Kills

Last night we ended with Miguel following Karina off the yacht to her place and them mutually seducing each other, But dang…didn’t take long to forget about Asya. On the other hand, that little stunt is going to cost him because the guys taking the pictures were none other than agents for some government entity. I am guessing the IRS type since he was talking about looking good in front of the Director of the Tax Office. And Miguel is about to become the “Pez gordo,” or fat fish.

We pick up with Miguel still in Miami, I guess the night in bed with Karina gave Miguel enough references to get a meeting with the Russians, because that is where we start this Friday night episode. Miguel's business plan seems too good to be true…a large network of money laundering for various organizations without charging them a penny and without risk. They, of course think it’s too good to be true. But Miguel seems to be operating like a bank. He cleans the money but in turn earns his cut through investing in the stock market. So that’s the plan. He tells the Russians he is trying to run this plan on an international level. The agent played by our friendly Alejandro Avila (Victor, Rulli’s best friend from LQLVMR) is trying to go undercover to see what he can find out from Mr. Sanchez Morris while quite obviously, scoping out Miguel the entire time.

La Usurpadora - Capitulo 15 - "Denial ain't just a river in Egypt"

So Carlos is in Paulina’s room excitedly announcing that he will travel with her to Colombia. Paulina either panics or also has a secret crush on Carlos, because she does a very poor job of coming up with any excuses at all, and ends up acquiescing to his request. Not only that, but Carlos ends up inviting himself to sleep in one bed with her (because “while he has no problem falling asleep, he does not want to sleep alone”), but promises to behave. They are found still lounging in bed in the morning by Lisette (already made up with her goth style lipstick and eye shadow), who runs downstairs to inform the early bird breakfast crew – Piedad and Arcadia. Arcadia is over the moon, but Piedad looks less than pleased with this news. It doesn’t help that Carlos arrives and reveals their mutual travel plans.

El Dragón #4, 10/3/19: Putting Plans Into Motion

Lucky for Bernal that Miguel was at that meeting and saw him in front of the protesters.  As soon as the shots were fired Mig raced out and grabbed his schoolfriend and dragged him to safety.  Bernie asks what brought Mig there and he admits he was attending the Party of the Privileged.  Bernie complains of all the treacherous crooks that were there attending with him who were all involved in his sister's death.  They race to Mig's car and are only momentarily stopped by a group of policemen in their kevlar.  The head cop takes one look inside the fancy car and Miguel's super serious and determined expression and Bernal's wounds, then backs off.  (Viewerville supposes this will be a precursor of things to come.)

Meanwhile, Chisca learns they've run out of blow.  Well, then, time to go to one of Granpop's hiphop one stop shops to grab a pack or two.  She's stopped by one of Gramps's goons.  By order of her brother she's not permitted to enter the club.  Really?  She backs him into a corner and begins to seduce him then suddenly screams and slaps him as trying to get fresh with her and makes a big scene in front of the other goons.  First goon backs off.  She tells him he won't say squat against her and slut struts in and later out of the club with her bag of boogey.

We open with Miguel sadly finding Aysa dead in the bathtub. Sometime later, he is in his condo, reminiscing about her. He remembers her as they once walked down a street together, showing him a card and she telling him he is the salt and she is the sea, neither one exists without the other.

The Garza siblings are at home bickering about Miguel. Chisca has a very bad attitude and Dora tells Chisca to at least have some compassion for her older brother Miguel.

In Japan, Miguel meets with his boss, Ishiro Tanaka, head of Tadamichi Securities. They sit down and Ishiro tells Miguel that he is like a Samurai without love.  Miguel tells him he is going back to Mexico. Ishiro asks if he knows what he is going to do with his home there. Later that morning, during one of Lamb's lucid moments during their walk together, Miguel informs him of his chat with Pig.  Lamb warns him it is probably a trap.  "--All the more reason I should go."  He needs to study his enemy.
