Que Pobres Tan Ricos- 1/23/14: The Bargain Basement Sale At The Menchaca Emporium Bring Lots Of Cash!
Hola, Amguis! I got about half of what was said this evening. Please feel free to fill in the blanks/correct what I got wrong. This recap will not be in any order and will be condensed. I am starting with the new and skipping the refried.
Lupe has gone on her scooter to pick up Emiliano from school. He wants to know why the RPs are living with them, they are rich aren't they? Never mind, Lupe tells him, they'll be out in a week. Lupe has come back with Emiliano and he goes upstairs while Lupe stops by to help Carmelita with the serving of the customers. MA comes down and asks her once more not to call the police, she says she gives him a week and flicks his head again. Meanwhile, Emiliano is upstairs and sees that magazine that Lupe bought. He turns the pages and is completely into a polo article he finds in it. Back downstairs, MA just wants five minutes of Lupe's time, she doesn't have time for him, she has to take care of customers and take care of Emiliano. She goes. After she leaves, MA tastes what she is making and rolls his eyes in ecstasy as he sighs Lupe's name.
MA says he's seen that pic of Ahole and Mini and AS and Leo fess up they knew beforehand. They saw Mini with Ahole but it was Leo's idea to keep it a secret. MA tells them Mini isn't important right now, their situation is. They need to find a solution. Oh, and never mention Mini's name again. The most important thing right now is that Lupe doesn't call the cops on them. He wants help from someone any one that can help.
There is a meeting at the RP bidness, and they are discussing the sexy secretary of the month. One of the guys liked MA's idea better and thought they'd be going with that. Nopis, from Ahole, either they do what he says, he is their lord and master, er the boss or else get out, you're fired! The guy goes and here come the stockholders. They are not too happy with Ahole, they give him heck about that article in the chisme magazine and are really upset that that little matter of MA is out in the public eye, when they specifically asked him not to divulge it. Ahole's excuse is that MA is a thief and totally responsible for everything that went wrong. After all, he has been running this company smoothly all this time while MA was in London. The stockholder's can't figure out why Ahole did this, the RPs are reportedly in Italia, well Ahole thinks they are Bologna cause they are so full of it. Even Vilma sticks up for her boy, what a great idea! The stockholders are not impressed. Ahole wants a vote of confidence from the stockholders and the presidency. They remind him, he is only in the presidency temporarily and don't forget that Grandfather clause! They go and Ahole is pithed. Sucks to be him!
AS is in the storage area, where the RP's things are and kisses her Fabrege eggs. She hates to part with them, but they gotta go. Don Chuy comes in with some coffee for them and they ask him about maybe having a sale of some of their stuff to the neighbors, maybe? Don Chuy will get on that. After Don Chuy goes, she tells Leo she'd rather live in la carcel (the jail) than this place. Leo reminds her la carcel is smaller than this place, no matter, she'd rather be there. She pulls out and kisses her Fabrege eggs, cast for Tsar Nicholas II's reign. They are worth 750,000.00 pesos, I think. Here in the States they go for a million or more. Emiliano comes into the shed and wants to know what they are up to. AS tries to shoo him out and Emiliano reminds them that this is his house, not theirs. He goes.
Lupe goes upstairs and catches Emiliano looking at that magazine. Emiliano has a question for her, is MA his Papa? Well this throws Lupe for a loop, so to speak. She wasn't expecting that. Outside the door, MA has come up and is listening. Emiliano thinks MA is because Lupe is nervous around MA and kind of fluttery, well not that, but nervous. Lupe is honest with Emiliano in the respect, that she tells him MA is not his Papa. She doesn't want anymore questions right now and to go down and eat. MA comes in after Emiliano leaves and tells her he thinks Ahole is Emiliano's Papa, right? Lupe sits down and admits that yes, Ahole is Emiliano's Papa. Please keep it a secret cause only a couple people know. He kinda, sorta figured it out when she was at the RP bidness. No wonder she can't stand the RPs he tells her. He'll keep her secret as she'll keep his, but he needs a favor. Even if he has to leave in a week, please keep the rest of the family there. She won't shake on it and reminds him, he only has a week. Lupe will, however, think about it. He starts to tell her about the clause of the will of his GrandPapa, but she cuts him off. She doesn't want to hear it. He does understand her frustration, he's about to take the magazine but she grabs it and goes.
MA goes outside to meet Saul in his car. Saul jumps a foot or so, cause well, he isn't comfortable in the 'hood. MA tells him about that article, but Saul reminds him they all think he's in Italia. MA tells Saul about the deadline of one week. Saul tells him to be calm. MA tells Saul about Mini marrying that putz of an Ahole. Saul tells him if they don't find proof, everything goes to Ahole. MA says they need a plan to get into the bidness and find proof of the fraud that Ahole set up. Also a Plan B of where the RPs are going to live. Saul makes a joke about where MA slept the night before, cause MA's muscles are achy. MA admits he slept in a cold storage area. That being said, MA grabs the magazine and goes.
Welcome to the Menchaca Auction House/Garage Sale Emporium! AS, with her helpers, Leo and Don Chuy is explaining all the goodies she is trying to sell. Her Fabrege Eggs, an item from Queen Victoria's reign in England, and various and sundry items. She wants a lot, the peeps give their prices, which is far below what she is asking for. One of the guys actually says he can sell all this stuff for them, but Don Chuy tells AS not to bother, the guy is not on the up and up. One of the guys even said he thought they were fakes and not the real thing. AS is discouraged and packs her stuff back up. She remarks she may as well use the Fabrege eggs as salt shakers, pobrecita!
Random scene of Guendy putting makeup on a lady and Perla is sweeping up the shop. Perla wants more hours I think. She also thinks she wants to be rich like the RP's.
Carmelita and Lupe are in the kitchen talking about the auction that went nowhere. Carmelita thinks that MA is muy guapo (very handsome). Lupe says he's poor. Carmelita thinks that Lupe is really liking MA. They go upstairs to talk. Lupe swears Carmelita to secrecy, but Perla is lurking and listening, and Carmelita swears, not a word. Lupe has some plan of MA signing over the deed to them, but don't tell Don Chuy. Perla pops in about this time and has to swear she won't tell either, but she crossed her fingers behind her back. Happy, happy, joy, joy.
AS has hit the flask. She is so disappointed she wasn't able to sell a thing. She will not sell her stuff at bargain, basement prices.
Ahole and Mini are canoodling in the living room, talking about thier lurrrvvve, when Isela comes in and interrupts and babbles on and on about the wedding and the credit card was so helpfull and they still have more stuff to get for the wedding, I think. Ahole says you got bebe things, right? Right? He can't wait to have a bebe and off he goes. He hasn't explained a darn thing to her about that clause yet. Well, both women are horrified. Mini so does not want to lose her figure by having some bebe, and Isela thinks she is too young to be called Abuela (Grandmother). End of Epi!
Avances:
Geundy meets MA and assorted other scenes. Tune in Este Viernes for Marta's Splendid recap to find out more! MUST SEE TV!

I think I got most of everything, and for the first time, I think I actually got the joke about Bologna, Italia. It was funny too. Please enjoy the recap ; )
You pretty much caught all the jokes/funny moments.
Yes, Lupe was thrown for a loop was a classic.
About:
He starts to tell her about the clause of the will of his GrandPapa, but she cuts him off. She doesn't want to hear it.
How many of us would be willing to bet that somehow A-hole tries to cojole Lupe into legally admitting Emi is her son and even tries to marry her instead of Mini?? Since Lupe has no idea of the 'Grandpa clause'.. if only she had let MA speak... Paula, there is your classic lack of communication issue.
While I'm happy to see Saul and MA together again, I'm a little disappointed that (for me at least) they haven't quite recovered the magic they had with each other in LFMB. Meanwhile, I'm just enjoying Leo more and more.
I'm also getting a kick out of Vilma. She is a delightful lady toady.
Carlos
regarding Vilma, I think the writers should get a clue from our comments so far, she would be a much richer character if she had some secret agenda (some old grudge) against the RPs and she really wanted to destroy their rich lifestyle (problem is that would mean Grandpa or MA's dad had some dirty rag in his closet, and from what we have seen so far, grandpa sounds like the old grandpa from Desti/Cafe or even BLF/LFMB, a straight businessman who would shiver from just the thought of doing something 'dirty or unjust'.
Marta, yes. When Lupe cut off MA about the clause, I had all types of thoughts about Alejo trying to snatch Emil, had not thought he would try to marry her. My guess is he'll find out after the marriage so kidnapping might be the order of the day.
Thanks for the recap Mads. One thing, I thought Perla crossed her fingers when she promised to kept MA's secret so that will most likely be a problem in the future.
yes, I saw that too... and was trying to figure out how Perla telling someone might affect them... if she tells Don Chuy not sure if he would dare go against Lupe's plan, but what if she tells others like Tizoc or even Nepo.
somehow A-hole tries to cojole Lupe into legally admitting Emi is HIS son...
btw, how would it affect Lupe's willingness to let Emi meet A-hole eventually if she finds out the only reason A-hole would try to approach them is 'the clause'.
AS calls the Menchaca house a "cuchitril" (pigsty) but then MA calls it a "chiquero" (pigsty) to Lupe's face? Not the way to advance his cause(s). He still has a way to go.
I liked how the investors/board moved en masse to address the magazine issue with Alejo. Also, their hardline on Grandfather's clause.
Also I am enjoying all of the schtick: like the dile tu--you tell him- interchange between AS and Leonardo.
SinceI was wondering about the ubiquitous nature of that orange building in these telenovelas, I did a google search and it looks like it is part of the Televisa home offices in DF. You guys probably knew that already.
Carlos, I agree with you about the MA and Saul relationship--not quite the same. Talking about LFMB, the actress who played goofy Leticia Mendiola is one of Isela's friends at the Club.
Jarifa
I did see up to the first commercial break (which is 1/3rd of the show), though. One thing I'll add, I don't know if it's relevant, is that Alejo said it was no big deal to mention the fraud in the magazine because he didn't identify MA by name as the fraudster. This little detail is pretty much meaningless right now, but perhaps the ambiguity will matter later.
I'm sorry I missed the yard sale, but I can't imagine why AS couldn't find a better way to liquidate her fabergé egg collection (assuming they're real or even just high-quality imitations). Even Sharky could have given her a better price than the people in Other Italy.
As for Emiliano, I don't know if even marrying Lupe would qualify the boy as a varón according to the terms of the "Grandfather Clause" (nice one, Mads!). The clause said the presidency would go to the first to get married and have a varón baby. That leaves some room for interpretation: does the baby have to be born after the wedding (which disqualifies Emiliano completely), and if not, does the baby have to belong to his wife (else he can stay married to Mini and still claim Emil as his varón)?
It could end up being a long-term plot point as the stockholders debate this, especially since they obviously do not want Ahole to be in charge. It could be in court for months.
As for Nepo's prospects with Lupita, I think Lupita's attraction to MA could actually drive her right into Nepo's arms. She doesn't WANT to be attracted to another RP, and Nepo represents the easy way out. Granted, Lupe doesn't usually take the easy way, but she might if the stakes were high enough.
Jarifa, I didn't know the orange building belonged to Televisa. It certainly explains a lot! It's been in LFMB, PESE, and this one - so Rosy must really like it. :) (Was it in Tontas too? I didn't watch enough of it to know.)
As for Nepo's prospects with Lupita, I think Lupita's attraction to MA could actually drive her right into Nepo's arms. She doesn't WANT to be attracted to another RP, and Nepo represents the easy way out. Granted, Lupe doesn't usually take the easy way, but she might if the stakes were high enough.
had not thought of it that way but so true!
Karen:
I fixed the part of the crossed fingers. I didn't see it, too busy taking notes, so thanks for that! I bet Perla spills in a heart beat.
Sara:
Thanks so much and love your new avatar.
Marta:
Thanks so much. Good idea about Vilma's maybe hidden agenda. That would be a great side plot.
Julie:
Thanks so much, you always clear things up for me. I too don't get how MA just popped out with Ahole is the bebe daddy. MA sure has a swift mind making connections that is. You brought up a good question about that Grandfather clause. I think it's pretty basic from what I understood. Ahole has to marry and produce an heir. There are some loop holes here, big time. They never mentioned if the heir counted, if he was born on the wrong side of the blanket, so to speak. Ahole wasn't married at the time of Emiliano's conception and birth so I really don't know what is going to happen. If Ahole were to get a good lawyer, it might fly. I hope at some point we get details about this clause. It's too cut and dried at this point.
Carlos:
It is so good to see you here. This TN is a little gem, I must say and so funny to boot. Vilma is a great female toady isn't she? I like that toady term : )
Shannon:
Welcome! And thanks for the Spanish dicho. I so enjoy learning new words. I lost it too when MA was tasting the soup and rolling his eyes in ecstasy, too funny.
Vivi:
Thanks. Please come back and tell us how you liked this epi. So funny ; )
Thanks so much and about the orange building. I didn't know that. I too remember it from PESE.
What is the RP's bidness called? I have just been calling it the RP bidness cause I didn't know the name.
Thanks so much. It does take some time doesn't it? With the action, but this one is such a hoot. AS is my favorite character, along with Don Chuy and Lupe and of course MA. They are all so funny. Leo makes me laugh with his Spanglish too.
I think there is still some of the LFMB chemistry especially with the overreaction when MA got in the car and poor Saul was terrified because of the neighborhood. I also howled with laughter when MA told him, don't worry i've got it under control Yeah right.
Little Emiliano seems to have several of the RP traits. A touch of Ahole's arrogance when he tells Leo and AS this is my house and some of MA's smarts when he has observed his mother's nervousness around the RP's. This is one bright little dude.
The garage sale was too much. The problem for the RP's although they might not have figured it out is that they can't brazenly go to the big pawn shop and or and auction house to sell their stuff because they can't risk being spotted by any of their socialite friends. And have they thought that if their junque went on the auction block people might recognize it?
The Grandfather Clause specified a "legitimate" son. If Alejo married Lupita and recognized his son, would that count? Or must the son be legitimate at birth? I don't know.
Marta: About the part where MA tries to explain the Grandfather Clause and Lupe won't let him. I predict that the problem will swing the other way. Lupe will fall for MA and agree to marry him, and then Alejo will somehow inform her about the clause, and she'll conclude that MA only wants her so he can gain the fortune. In typical TN style, at that point she'll give up on true love and settle for Nepo because he's a good decent man and her son needs a daddy. Just like Helena with Pluto in Eva.
Carlos, I think the reason the MA/Saul combination doesn't work for you is that Augie Arana is playing the smart one and Camil is playing the dumb one. Talk about casting against type!! IMHO most lab rats are smarter than AA, so when his character is supposed to be the brains of the operation, I just can't buy it.
I'm having similar troubles with the Vilma character. In both Eva and Los Exitosos Perez she was very smart. Heartless in Perez, but still smart. I can't think of her as someone this stupid regarding Alejo, especially since she's so sharp and competent in everything else. Minerva, stupid? Claro! Vilma stupid? No me cuadra.
Vivi, how'd MA figure out that Alejo is the daddy? Lupita asked him, and he gave her two reasons. My memory is foggy; I think one was her initial anger when she heard he was an RP. I think the other involved her visit to the company; I'm not sure.
One small clarification on the staff meeting. The one guy had been the head of their business magazine for like ten years, and Alejo announced they'd have the sexy scty of the month. The exec protested, trying to save the reputation of his product - imagine if Forbes or Business Week included a centerfold???
The old guy at the auction suggested that AS sell her stuff through Sharky. Don Chuey warned AS that she doesn't want to go that route, but we all know how much AS respects Chuey's wisdom.
Madeline, you said, "If Ahole were to get a good lawyer..." I predict he's going to get a BAD lawyer.
Julie, the orange building was not in Tontas. But I think they missed a golden opportunity. Picture it:
MiguelAngel has just returned to Mexico, after years in London. He's seeing, for the first time in many years, places and people and objects that had a huge influence in his life. He comes up the driveway, stops and gazes at the big orange building, and says, "Ay, caray! What memories this place has for me!"
Funny, though - I'm having no trouble accepting AA in the Saul role, and Vilma's casting is working okay for me too (except for hoping Vilma is smarter than she seems). Obviously they look like their previous characters, but the acting is effective enough that they don't remind me of their old roles at all.
As far as whether A-hole would be able to blackmail/persuade Lupe into admitting Emi is his son, there could be millions of ways... once she falls for MA, she could be told that is the only way MA will stay out of jail (A-hole will tell where MA is if she does not let him 'recognize' Emi) or he could even force her to marry him. who knows... i hope Lupe has more backbone than that... if she just doesn't do anything she might be better off... hopefully she will go to the right source of advise, i would say Don Chuy.
Thanks so much. I agree about Emiliano's traits. He is a sweet little boy though, and very smart. I agree about the RP's stuff. They really can't go sell it anywhere else can they. Unless there is a Craig's list and they send Saul to make the sale, but then again, their stuff would be recognizable.
Paula:
I so agree with what you said. And thanks for the little missing pieces. I agree about Forbes and Business World. That so wouldn't fly. Ahole is just so full of himself. He has to have made some blunder, but ya know the more I think about it, the more I think Vilma actually is smarter than she acts. I bet she had more to do with the fraud then Ahole. She just seems to be a dumb bunny.
my memory of the clause is also that it must be a legitimate male child. Now I would think that if Alejo were to marry Lupita, that would legitimize Emiliano albeit after the fact. Could anyone get us a copy of that will so we can have our own lawyers look it over?
Carlos
The auction was funny, AS and Leo could make more for their stuff with the loan shark but there's no way they could get the money those pieces are worth again.
Paula, I don't think Tiaré Scanda was in LEP. I don't remember her.
By the way, Tiaré and Silvia Pasquel played evil allies in Amarte es Mi Pecado. Their looks were very different (I can't believe Tiaré could speak with those fake teeth): here's a link to a scene with them.
Jarocha
Marrying Lupita might "legitimize" Emiliano in a legal sense, but it still might not satisfy the clause.
The clause said "get married and have a legitimate heir." This can be interpreted to mean "marry and then have an heir, in that order." (That is what I assumed.) If the lawyers argue this successfully and a judge agrees, then Emiliano cannot qualify as an heir.
I don't know how the lawyers would argue this. Maybe there is some legal precedent; or maybe there are witnesses (like Grandma) or some other document written by Abuelo to clarify his idea of a "legitimate heir". For example, perhaps someone can produce a letter from Grandpa where he specifically said that in his opinion, any child born out of wedlock was permanently illegitimate.
Julie, regarding getting a judge to agree with Alejo's interpretation of the clause. Don't forget, "Con dinero baila el perro" - with enough money, even a dog will dance. Especially in certain sectors of the Mexican legal system, it helps to invest in an agreeable judge.
I was happy to see AS get thru most of the day without drinking.
I didn't see enough of DaVinci last night. When we saw him in the last scenes, he was wearing another coat. The RP's may have left MA's wardrobe behind but at least they didn't forget DaVinci's.
Barbara
I was hesitant to get involved in this one because of fears of it being another version of LFMB, same actors, same producer but I seem to have worried in vein. I don't remember if it is the same director, I'm inclined to think not because JC is being kept under control. He has a tendency to go over board in comedies and when directors let him get away with it bad things result. I bailed on PESE after a week because he was out of control. If the director can keep him on a tight leash and the producer doesn't go for an extension we should be in for a fun ride like the one we've been having.
