La Gata #115 2/10/15 La Manipulación
This is your mother-in-law on drugs (steroids to be precise.)
I started taking notes and then I was drawn into this...
...incredible (as in beyond belief) turn of events. It was like a train wreck and I couldn't stop watching. So I gave up notes after a while. Pabs and Esme fight for pretty much the whole episode with short interruptions for commercials and our other story lines. I'm not sure how to cover this. I definitely didn't take notes because this was the part that just left me gobsmacked. There's some condensing and combining for sure.
I know it was in the Refrito, but Meche says something to Dam about lying to Vicky. So he must have something up his sleeve, but poor Vicky thinks she's just been demoted to second fiddle. Not cool, Dam.
Pablo gives Esme the news that they will leave the mansion, but without Pablito. The little boy is the only consolation Lo has. Let me quote my notes here " 'Lo único consuelo que tiene' my ass." He didn't ask. He didn't try to soften the blow. He just dropped it like a bomb. What an idiot. I hated him before because he was stupid. Now I hate him because he is such a self-centered mama's boy. Did Lo drop him on his head when he was a baby?
Vicky is home and Gi is not happy to see her. The feeling is mutual. So they snipe and Gi makes a quip to which Vicky responds something about friends and then has a flashback to 5 minutes ago. She reminds herself that she and Dam are just friends...but it hurts so much!
So. Pablo and Esme argue. Lo listens at the door and wonders who will get their way--La Gata or her. La Gata swears that no one will separate her from her children. They will have to kill her first. Pabs spends the whole episode trying to explain to Esme that his mom is soooo sick and Pablito is the only thing she has and can't they just move and let the little boy stay with the she-devil? They can rent a house and be nearby! Esme can visit every day! Just let Pabs have some peace! (Shins, buddy.)
Garabato is in charge of Virginia 2.0 and Carlos Horacio. Carrrlos is busy teaching his advanced Braille class. Carlos Horacio wants to go the Ciudad Encontrado and talk to the nice but badly spray tanned lady that hangs around and begs there. When asked why, Carlos Horacio explains he feels there is something special under all that dirt. He's sure there's a pretty lady under there. He and Virginia beg. Garabato gives in.
Pablito refuses to eat until Uncle Mariano comes home. Dorila reports this to Lo and tells the old bat that she is the only one that will be able to get Pablito to eat. Lo goes downstairs and tries to sweet talk him into eating, but he still refuses. Esme interrupts and tells Lo that if the boy doesn't want to eat, he doesn't have to. More yelling. Esme and Lo literally play tug of war with the boy. Esme takes Pablito up to her bedroom.
While there, both Leti and Pablito tell Esme how miserable they are and they want to live in peace.
Down in the dining room Lo and Pablo talk about how awful things are getting. Lo faints. Doctor Edgar HatBro MD is called. He tends to Lo and then reports to Pablo. Lo's health is bad. She's dying. He will try to save her, but it really is best that Esme leave Mexico. Pablo wants to talk to his mother.
Monica has a tête-à-tête with Rogelio (though it is in a public place...) Monica been talking him up to Esme and telling her how much he wants to meet her. Esme agreed to coffee. Monica explains that Lo is doing her part to draw a wedge between Esme and Pablo. Once a woman has marriage troubles, she goes looking to another man to escape and Rogelio will be right there waiting. Rogelio begs Monica to hurry up and arrange the coffee date.
Esme gets the children settled and sleeping and calls Blanca and tells her things are as bad as ever. Blanca thinks Pablo should grow some c*jones and stand up to his mother. Pablo can't make up his mind and never has been able to. That's a problem. Esme knows Lo has always hated her and Esme just knows that Lo is faking it to manipulate Pablo. Pablo doesn't seem to see it or believe Esem. Blanca assures Esme that they (Blanca and Fer) believe her.
Garabato and the children return from their outing. Carlos Horacio complains that his father couldn't find la Ciudad Encontrado. Jeez dad! You lived there! How could you forget? Carlos Horacio is not convinced. The kids are sent up stairs and the actor I will forever call Hots-car comes downstairs (Garabato called him Billy.) Garabato is afraid that if Ines finds out Carlos Horacio is her son, she will take him from Garabato. Billy Hot-scar says there is no judge that will give custody to Ines. Billy Hots-car asks if Garabato still has feelings for Ines. Garabato admits he does, but it's too late.
Lo wants to die. Boo hoo. Pablo asks her not to talk like that. Lo laments that Esme's will was stronger than hers. Pablo swears he will talk to Esme right now. And he does. And he says his mother's health is above all. I mean, how do you even snark such absurdities?? YOUR MOTHER TRIED TO KILL YOUR CHILDREN YOU IDIOT. I'm just slack jawed and dumbfounded again. I just can't even.
Fer wants to go confront Lo. Blanca thinks that it isn't a good idea.
Pablo tells Esme they will have to separate if she can't learn to get along with his mother. Just then Fer arrives and wants to talk to Pablo.
Ines and Rey have a fight. She kicks him out. She swears to look for her hijo.
Fer tells Pablo he's a coward. Fer wants to know if Pabs plans to separate from Esme. Meanwhile Esme is in her bedroom whining about being away from Pablo. She'll just die without him. Then she seems to get a grip and decides she will fight. She is... LA GATA. She will always be...LA GATA. More like Garfield(™.) Except he's smart.
Gi is not happy to see Dr Edgar HatBro MD. She's bored. He tells her she won't be bored when they leave this fabulous ring in the perfect place to make Pablo jealous of the man who's always loved Esme. Is this plan B, because I'm pretty sure not 10 minutes ago Pablo told Esme thy need to separate.
The Ghost of Crapness Past (Augie) taunts Lo. At this point I'm paying even less attention than usual, but I'm snapped out of my reverie by a Lo bleat-shrieking NUNCAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!! (Which I will be saying Friday night. No voy a recappear una novela de esa maldita Latoodla NUNCAAAAAAAA!!!)
Previous: Episode 114
Next: Episode 116
Labels: gata
Only thing remotely enjoyable was watching Augie torment Lo. I changed the channel for most of it.
Love the Garfield comment! Dead on!!
Pablo and Esme. Yawwwwwwn.
Pablito. Did he actually tell Esme her Mama Lorenza could die because of her? Brat.
Willy. Why is he living with Garabato and Carlos. How big is that apartment anyway????
Edgar. Dude needs a new wardrobe. I'm sick and tired of the shirt and vest combos. I could never take a doctor seriously if he dressed like him.
3 more eps to go.
Maite has fabulous posture when she's sitting on that couch pretending to give a rat's ass about anything Dan has to say. That's probably the only positive thing I have to say. And her outfits look great. And her hair is fabulous.
Maybe Augie somehow scored Purgatory and is working his way out by trying to convince Lo to give up the evilcrazy?
Mr. 5ft understood Pablo when he said Lo's heart was bad, so he asked why they would leave a child in her care. You know, since she's "dying" and all. If she could just go ahead and actually die during one of her fake episodes, that'd be greeeeeeat. Do not invoke Death, Lo, or he might give you what you've been asking for!
My mean-spirited thought about Pablo treating his son like some kind of security blanket for his mother is that this is the price Esme's paying for all that "They're MY kids!" crap that she pulled for so many years. I feel horrible even saying that. But it's consistent--he still kept referring to Pablito as "her" son and never once addressed how HE would feel about being away from his son. And why should he care? He spent so much time being separated from them and having no say in where they were going to live. Why should now be any different?
I'll probably have some more horrible things to say later. I need to digest this a bit. Maybe have some Alka-Seltzer. Or booze. Geez, tomorrow's recap is going to suck. Sorry, y'all. Like Sara said, "How do you even snark such absurdities?"
Are they still combining episodes,or are these episodes as originally shown? It all just seemed so sloppy and confusing. Or maybe I'm just confused? Am I turning into Pablo?
The two part finale will most likely be combined into one on Friday.
Who ever does the recap tomorrow. I think SOSDD should cover it. Same Old Shit, Different Day.
I will try to find La Gata tomorrow night. Thanks Diva for letting me know what time to tune in. Good luck on your audition.
Looks like you're going to be treated to some of our lovely "completely makes you forget about the hellish summer" weather. Enjoy!
That's why she looks so familiar.
Boy but the conversation between Pablo and LO brought tears in my eyes because I heard the same thing between my husband and my now deceased mom in law. This was years ago when we just had our first born, a girl and we were living with my parents in law due to my husband was taking care of them. I experienced the same suffering and there were no love between the two women in that house so I wanted out. But my husband stood firmly and told my mom in law that anyway we will live nearby and she can just go visit. But Pablo is dumb, blind a**^^^^!He is not like my husband who chose us. In fairness to my mom-in law, she did loved my two daughters. Enough of my personal drama. You can ff if you want.
anyways, No, I don't want LO to die that easy, I want her to be thrown out of that house, (there's no more garbage dump, I think ,so how about the ravine and let her taste what she is loathing so much, to be a poor dirty beggar and oh better yet be thrown into jail first and then once she is released suffer that fate of being a trash and being a beggar. Anne
Anon3:49- thank you for sharing. As I watched last night I just kept thinking "what man would gladly leave one of his children behind." Like you said, only a dumb and blind one.
CS, thanks, been trying to place Vicky. Yes, Gema, Isabels maid.
Name one reason, Pablo should not get an anvil? Yes, Lo's bad but even if she is gone, Pablo will still be Pablo. The best thing Fernando could do for all involved is put a bullet in the back of his head. Problem solved.
He didn't save her from the dump, she shouldn't have been there and Fernando would have found her anyway.
He hasn't supported his wife and kids financially and the first time he tried to feed Esmeralda his mama ran her out after one bite.
He's done nothing with his life but mooch. Painted a few cat pictures, a book and movie but flat broke, living with mother and going to movies with Monica.
He is not involved in raising his kids and first refused to recognize them as his and now placed them in harms way.
He provides no moral or emotional support to his wife or children. Quite the contrary, his selfishness prompts him to create dramatic episodes that give the appearance he may leave just so Esmeralda will cling.
I think Pablo was castrated shortly after he impregnated Esme, because they haven't had any more children, and he clearly has no balls.
I don't understand Lorenza's fixation with keeping Pablito and separating him from his parents. Truth be told, I don't understand any of this.
Sara, you do indeed deserve a sticker for not using any obscenities! I am amazed that you could write this and not use any. I can't think of a crude phrase that is low enough to do justice to this situation.
Didn't Lo make some disparaging remarks about Esme's education level some time previously? That really pisses me off. I know a lot of people who have advanced degrees who are total dumbasses, and, on the other hand, my grandfather and my father-in-law both quit school after the 7th grade, and were two of the most intelligent men I have ever met.
Thank you Sara. I don't know how you keep on making delicious chicken soup with the raw material you have to work with.
David
tofie, I'm good with an anvil for Pablo. He's said and done some really stupid things and basically, all of them have caused harm to someone--most lately his kids.
David, she's heaped enough insults on Esme, I wouldn't be surprised if that was one of them, but alas...I didn't keep track! Nor did I keep track of all the insulting synonyms for "poor" that Lo used throughout the show. I'd like some statistics to back up that I've never heard so many all in one show before. Great education for all the kids watching during "family" time.
During one of Esme-Pablo's fights over little Pablito being unilaterally assigned to Lo, I actually wandered away to HANG CURTAINS. Yep, it's sad. Once a certain level of stupidity is reached, the emotions just turn off (mine, not Esme and Pablo's).
Oddly I haven't seen announcement for the gran finale, so it's Friday?
J in Oregon
Anyone got paint drying? Could you film that and post it for me in case a need a little pick-me-up after?
David I love your turn of phrase "I don't know how you keep on making delicious chicken soup with the raw material you have to work with."
Raw material indeed.
J in O- They have officially said that Friday is the gran final. I was waiting for it, too. And I second Diva. I'd rather hear about curtains.
Pablo ain't stupid he just doesn't care unless he feels bad. He doesn't torture animals, no, but he's like a drunk driver plowing into a crowd.
Bad Movies
Basically, it's an exploration of movies that bad-but-fun and just plain bad. He said a lot of things about movies that I think can apply to telenovelas as well. No, not universally, but when he talks about gathering the tribe to mock...well, he might as well be talking about the patio. He also brings up how it becomes awkward when, the "tribe" doesn't all agree on why they're watching--is it to mock or to enjoy? I think Caray is definitely geared towards the mocking (I mean, it's right there in the header) but we have our moments of appreciation, too.
One of the concluding paragraphs really spoke to me, especially if I substitute "telenovela" for "movie":
"And Bad [Telenovelas] should remain shocking, or at least noteworthy enough to make fun of. For a [telenovela] to hit the screen, it has to pass through the hands of writers, actors, cinematographers, lighting professionals, sound professionals, costumers and makeup artists, directors, editors, producers, and focus groups. That’s a vast conspiracy of people, any one of whom might nudge a [telenovela] farther toward Quality and away from Quagmire. Yet their combined efforts were not enough. The wisdom of crowds failed."
Alas, no one appears to be performing that function on La Gata.
Hell, those damn Febreze commercials play on the literal version of that fear..."Your house smells just fine to you...but to everyone else it smells like a giant cat box where someone has grilled a stinky fish! Deodorize that shit with Febreze!"
Been wishing that since they had that zoo date. She really was enjoying herself, happy and seemed a different person.
Latoodle, here's yo chance to score at the buzzer
Pabs and Esme married in the church. So that would have to mean the death of Pabs. I'm good with that.
It would be a big twist at the end. I'm good with that, too.
There would be another wedding. YAY! Another dress!
Now I'm getting my hopes up and it's not going to happen. Damn you Latoodle.
I love when you tell us about how things work in the theater and you're right, there was no one to really keep up with everything.
How do you think that gets done when you are talking about a show that airs daily? Clearly quality control is possible, we've seen enough GOOD shows (La Malquerida, Alborada) that we know it's possible.
There are people in the boat but they are not going anywhere because nobody is steering!
And adding a new character to thicken the plot...4 days before El Fin? That's just not even crazy. Word for that doesn't exist.
J in Oh.....
When I think of that producer, J, I can just imagine her laughing at the idea that they could have a beginning and an end, but no idea how to get there. Maybe having a full script ready isn't realistic, but how about a plan for what's going to happen each day or each week? It doesn't even feel like they had that. And "the story of two people who fall in love as kids and fight for their love despite all odds" is great for the back cover of the DVD, but that's not a blueprint for how to get from point A to point B (and it's clearly not what's been happening, regardless of what the on-screen TV guide has to say about it). Yet it feels like that's all they had...plus, maybe, the added clout of claiming to be using Ines Rodena's story--which, if they actually had, might have worked, since she wrote an actual story!
Maybe they'll learn from this and either stop trusting that just because someone says "I'd like to do a remake of X" that means they're actually going to do it or start insisting that it actually needs to BE a remake, not a remake of about the first third followed by a swift descent into madness.
I don't know how closely La Malquerida followed Benavente's original play and if so, how much that has to do with the overall quality, but I could see where having an already-established, strong story and NOT trying to change most of it would free up a whole lot of energy for pretty much everyone involved.
I have no idea whether or not I answered the question.
Agreed.
"...but I think the way to do it would be not to get started until there's an actual plan..."
I don't Latoodle ever has a plan beyond, here's 20 episodes of fairly decent stuff. Let's just air it. If ratings are good, we'll make it up as we go along. If ratings are bad, we'll make it up as we go along but not for as long as usual.
I don't know a lot about the Benavente play. I don't think the TN followed it religiously, but did keep some plot ideas. Maybe Vivi will stop by and give us a little info.
Maite's black dress with the gold bow. And yes, her beautiful hair.
If I hear Pablo say mama, mama one more time I think that I will loose it.
Yes, I agree. Lo must have dropped Pablo on his head when he was a baby and he has never completely recovered.
the gringo
film set I'm sure.
the gringo
One of the things that is really, really bothering me in this story is the infantilization of Esme and Blanca. Jesus! These two women lived on the streets and in a dump for twenty years. They are probably pretty tough. Why do the men around them treat them like two year old idiots. Why does El Sil have Esme leave the room to talk to Pablo? They have done this repeatedly. Every time they do it, I want to scream. When Damien saw Gisella with Hatbro, why didn't he run straight to his good friend Esme and tell her, " Hey, the woman who repeatedly tried to kill you and your husband is hanging around with your kids' doctor." No. He tells El Sil.
Esme doesn't even deserve Mariano anymore. She has not protected those children. She kept taking them back to the dump to live when there was no need. She moved in with the woman who tried to kill them. She's dead to me.
Thank you patio peeps for your support through this trying time. Thank god it is almost over.
LN-Love your avatar and your take on the ring:
"Here is a something shiny, leave me in peace. You asshole."
Why *do* they do so many remakes? Is it so hard to come up with something vaguely different?
Ironically enough, I just came from a storytelling workshop. Let's just say the instructors would have thrown Latoodle out and barred the doors.
Gringo- Sara already explained to me that you meant the school, not the new Ciudad Encontrada, which is what I thought you meant. I actually never watched an episode where the characters were at the institute, so I never saw it. I'm sure you're right that it was the same place.
Please save us from stoopid, classist, racist, idiots with money invading spaces that could be the place for sharing dreams and wonder. That's all that has happened here. Dumbass with dough!
