I'm not going to be able to contribute much to the discussion here for a while. I'm in the process of selling my house and making a long-distance move. Knowing this, I deliberately decided not to get involved in watching any telenovelas after La Doña, since I would often be unable to watch. I was heartened by some of the news Vivi posted a few weeks ago about novelas being planned. I'm eager to be settled and able to watch. Fortunately for me, my hiatus from watching has come at a time when I'm not tempted by the current offerings. I just hope I won't have forgotten all my Spanish in the interim. :-(

I do hope people will continue to post about what they're watching, what they wish they were watching, news of what's coming down the pike, etc. etc. As LXV mentioned earlier, we want to continue to have this space for Telemundo novelas, so it would be helpful to have some postings. Hint hint :-)

Bienvenido a Telemundo. I had a very different response when I heard about the possibility of La Reina del Sur2. I think LRDS is the best telenovela I have ever seen. Ever. For that reason, I'm excited about the possibility of LRDS2, especially if the cast is as well chosen as in the first one. I doubt that LRDS2 will be as good as #1, but if it's even half as good, I'll be happy. Of course, Telemundo seems to have a tendency to take a winner and drag it out ad nauseum for several more seasons. El Señor de los Cielos comes to mind. Still, I definitely plan to give LRDS2 a look.
 

Juanita, I just noticed that LRDS is on Netflix. Why is it your all time favorite? What is special about it? Btw, good luck on your move. May it be as easy as possible.

Alfredo, I, too, also like the open and shut telenovela productions. That to me is a very strong selling point. There is always an end. As soon as you start with "seasons" you run the risk of never having a plot resolution and being left just hanging.

"Sin senos sí hay paraíso" has been filming the first scenes on the beaches of Miami, Roberto Manrique will be paired up with Carmen Villalobos.

Jarifa, I'm not sure, but I think Alfredo was responding to your question about what made LRDS so great. I really liked and agree with his response. In addition, I thought LRDS was superbly acted, not just in the main roles, but throughout the cast. And perhaps because it was based on a novel by a fine Spanish novelist, Arturo Pérez-Reverte, who had a hand in transforming the novel into the telenovela, I found it more interesting than most telenovelas. It depended less on stereotypic characters and stock situations, though it certainly had some. I think it felt more like a fine film you'd see at a movie theater, but much longer. And though it was longer than a film, it was quite short for a telenovela--I think it ran for three months. There was no padding, no stretching it out to fill 120 episodes, and no silly subplots for so-called comic relief. I found it fascinating, powerful, compelling.

Also, thanks very much for your good wishes about the move! It's proving to be more of an adventure than I'd anticipated. :-)

Though I didn't watch La reina del sur, what I remember most about it is that one of the French professors in my department, who also occasionally taught lower-level Spanish classes, was totally hooked! He is ordinarily a low-key, easy-going sort, but while LRDS was on he'd give a run-down of capitulos to anyone who would listen and rave about the wonderfulness of both the tn and Kate del Castillo. I may have a look at it as well.
 

Juanita, Alfredo, SpanProf, I just watched first 4 episodes of LRDS and enjoyed it much more than I would have ever thought. The first and last ( of what I would call a) narco series I saw was "The Bridge" (2013-2014) on FX. I liked that one a lot in spite of the over the top violence. That is how I feel about LRDS one so far. It was so appropriate to make the theme song a corrido.
This is the first time I have seen Kate del Castillo in anything and I am impressed.
 

She was also the mother in the movie Bajo el mismo sol, and superb in that role too.

La Reinda del Sur (Telemundo's novela)

I read the book first, which was kind of a mistake, because it made me dislike the novela which wasn't "true" to the book.

But when Telemundo reran it, I did watch. Yes, it's different than the novel but not worse. The performances are almost universally superb, especially Kate del Castillo.

Well worth watching.
 

Speaking of Kate Del Castillo: Isn't she currently on a Netflix TV Show portraying the First Lady of Mexico ?
