FALSA IDENTIDAD – Parte 1 de 2
From Friday: Porfi and Diego talk and Diego doesn’t mind if he gets Isa back. But he tells him that if he hurts her again: enfermo y todo va a dejarlo listo para el pozole (Sick and all, he’s going to make him ready for the pot – finish him off ? Couldn’t find this phrase anywhere). We see Circe, having caught sight of Ricas at the hospital, telling Jota Jota to protect the kids. Isa is fired for showing up late, even with the best excuse in the world.
Isa has come to Diego’s new place to tell him that she never wants to see him again. Diego tells her she’s right; he begs her pardon and says everything is his fault. She says she was an idiot to trust him. Diego assures her no thugs will ever come again; the Colombians will protect them. She gives him a disgusted look and tells him that now he’s one of them.
At the prison there is a very interesting scene between Gavino and Felipa. He tells her she came out ahead losing an eye; he’d ordered her killed and she would have been except Deivid didn’t have the huevos to do it. She tells him she raised his daughter because his wife asked him to.
Gavino sneers at this and says he remembers things very well. When his wife became inservible por la quimioterapia (Wow! Just wow! She wasn’t serviceable any more.) Felipa came to his bed. He laughs at her, saying she thought she’d end up with him, that he’d marry her. “How could she think he’d end up with una india mojina? (Could not find a definition for mojina but it’s certainly not complimentary.)
Felipa: You stole me, you kidnapped me, you brought me to Álamos and you raped me when I was just a girl. He’s not ashamed at all, of course, saying he had some lust for her at that time. But she came back for more, over and over. In fact he says she fell in love with him, laughing in her face.
Felipa retorts that she cared for Circe, loved her like no one else, convinced her she was born to be a top boss, and set her against him so he’d end up in this hole. In short, she screwed him but good. Gavino says he wasn’t wrong about her. He always knew she was un alacrán venenoso (poisonous scorpion). Gavino: Te vendiste el alma al Chamuco. (You sold your soul to the Devil.) She admits it, and says she did it to bring him down.
Gavino tells her this won’t last long. Circe won’t forgive her for what happened between them, nor for having helped her mother die. He says that Felipa poisoned her with her herbs. She doesn’t really deny it. She asks him, if that’s what he thought, why didn’t he say anything. He replies that he was tired of his wife and her illnesses and Felipa did him a favor by getting rid of her. (Yikes!) And now that she’s no longer useful to him, he’s going to tell Circe what she did. When Felipa replies that Circe won’t believe it, he replies that Ramona certainly won’t forgive her. He leans forward and tells her she isn’t fooling him; he knows she still wants him.
Gabriela gets a call that her sister is now in the ICU and some sort of medicine is needed. Money is needed. She decides to call someone who’s paid for sex in the past.
Isa keeps burning down everything between she and Diego. She thinks he and Circe are now a couple. He tells her he’s separated from her for her own good. He’s made a sacrifice doing this because he loves her. He then suggests she reunite with Corona. She says she hates him.
The two thugs José sent to lure Diego to Isa and the children have been beaten severely at José’s orders. He tells Topo he wants them killed as a lesson to the rest. [What? How is this their fault?] Piochas says they’re running out of guys. [And what he’s doing certainly doesn’t inspire loyalty.]

Circe does some sort of ritual with rose petals and honey. She gets into a bath after pouring honey all over herself. This is supposed to cause Diego to adore her.
Diana and Chucho’s mother get along very well. His mother gives her a hand embroidered blouse she’d brought to DF to try to sell. Later Diana cries, saying she envies Chucho for having such a loving parent. She lost hers early.
Piochas works on Topo, telling him that José is nuts. He convinces Topo to bring José, alone, to an ambush.
Porfi tells Ricas that he knows his son would prefer to have Diego around, but he’ll try to show him some fun times. Ricas reminds him of how things were in Álamos, and Porfi assures him that will never happen again. Aprendí a los golpes que su madre es una gran mujer y merece repecto. (I learned the hard way…)
Deivid has overheard Gaby arranging her assignation and later comes into her apartment while she’s getting ready. Deivid begs her not to sell herself. He forces a kiss on her and, as so often happens with telenovela forced kisses, she can’t resist, and they fall into bed together.
Diego is talking with Fernanda at the place he’s found for her where Chucho, Gabriela, Deivid, etc., all live. She tells him that Isa was fired. Diego is worried about his mother; he says she shouldn’t live near him; it’s not safe. She says she found a place she can afford. He offers to help with money; but she says she wants to support herself. Fer figures out that they went after Isa and the children because of his now working for a cartel.
The U.S. FBI guy tells Salas that the auntie will likely back off because the authorities in the U.S. are after “Emiliano” for the shooting at the motel. She won’t want them to find him.
Apparently Deivid is quite the lover. They both are amazed at how hot it was. But she’s still going to leave for the paid sex. She says she did “this” because she wanted him, but she needs to get the money elsewhere. However, they later fall back into bed together.
Fer tries to talk Diego into quitting the drug business. She says she worries for him. And that she loved her two boys equally. Diego doesn’t believe this. Just then Circe shows up, and Fernanda has nothing but disgust for her. Diego tells his mother to butt out; he and Circe have things to discuss.
Disgusto shows up with signed divorce papers, and Marlene the Idiot is over the moon.
Mateo and Piochas are in a dark street planning the ambush. Mateo will be up high with an automatic weapon.
Circe tells Diego about the bounty on José. He’s not happy, and says it will cause a war. Diego has a memory of bringing Circe to his house – the one that was shot up later by José and Circe herself after the revelation about Silvia. He asks her what she’s turned into, and what happened to that innocent girl.
José arrives with Topo. Piochas goes to meet him, as arranged. José asks Topo if he doesn’t smell rata traicionera. Some guys jump out of the back of the vehicle and mow down Piochas. Mateo gets away.

Thanks VERY much, novelera, for this excellent recap! It made me realize how much I had missed. For example, the line Te vendiste el alma al Chamuco. I thought the Spanish captions had "chamaca" rather than "chamuco," though perhaps I misread the caption because I was unfamiliar with the word "chamuco." Anyway, I thought that Gavino was saying that Felipa had sold her soul to the girl, i.e., to Circe. That didn't really seem right to me. Your version, that she sold her soul to the Devil, makes a lot more sense.
I also completely missed the fact that there were other guys in the vehicle carrying Jose and Taro, and it was those guys who shot Piochas. I thought that Mateo had shot him, and that Mateo had double-crossed him, perhaps because José had made him a better offer. After reading your recap, I took another look at the scene, and this time I saw the other guys. They were visible for no more than a second, perhaps not even that long, and then the camera focused on Mateo, which led me to believe that Mateo had done the shooting.
Poor Gabriela. I'm beginning to think that she's being swindled by people in Colombia. I may be wrong, but the conflicting accounts of the sister's condition coupled with more requests for money make me suspicious.
And then there's Marlene. Sigh. Felipa may have lost one eye, but Marlene seems to have lost the use of both. She can't see what a turd Disgusto is. She's thrilled that he's finally getting a divorce (or so he says) and she kisses him repeatedly and tells him Te amo, te amo, te amo, te amo.. Apparently she fails to notice that he never says te amo back, not even once.

Thanks, guys. I was also pleased to see that Chucho is Huichol. I visited Zacatecas, among other cities in Mexico, a couple of years ago. That tribe is quite common there. I visited a museum of Huichol artifacts and jewelry. They are known for beautiful beaded jewelry, and I bought several necklaces that I really love.
I was also unfamiliar with Chamuco and had to look it up. Of course the clue that it was masculine was al instead of a la. What I found was, I think, the more common expression translated as little devil, probably for a mischievous child. I was pretty sure it was Devil anyway because that's to whom one usually sells the soul!
So those comments Ramona has made to Felipa about a secret that had us wondering if she could have been Circe's bio mom was about Felipa bedding Gavino. Not likely it's about the "herbs".

Falsa Identidad - Capítulo 44 - Parte 1 de 3
Well, I'm afraid my visitors didn't leave until late. I'll try to sketch out some of what happened in the episode.
Piochas is lying on the ground after having been shot multiple times by José's thugs. José comes over and fires one more shot into him. He talks to the apparently dead Piochas, and as he does so, Mateo manages to hide behind a wall. José tells his men that the cartel is divided into two parts: those people who follow Gavino will wind up dead like Piochas, while those who follow José will have work and money for their families. José asks his men to spread the word: no one betrays José Arturo Hernández Esparza.
Jim tells Isa that her position in Babel is always available. Isa thanks him but says that she left Diego because she didn't want to have anything to do with the narcos, and if she returns, she'd have to deal with them. She also doesn't want her children to be near those guys.
Nuria runs into Ramona. She asks Ramona for more pills and tells her she'll pay what she owes next week. She also tells Ramona she has a novio--Erick. Oops. Ramona remembers the hot sex she had with Erick. She puts up a happy face in front of Nuria, but as soon as Nuria leaves, Ramona's expression changes. She's clearly not happy about Nuria and Erick.
As soon as José and his men leave the site of Piochas' shooting, Mateo comes over to Piochas. He feels for a pulse and apparently finds one, since he then carries Piochas back to his place. He tells a barely conscious Piochas to put pressure on his wounds, and he calls Gavino. He tells Gavino that José realized that we were going to do him in, and he asks Gavino what to do about Piochas, who is very badly wounded. Gavino tells him to call Dr. Gutiérrez on Gavino's behalf and tell him that if Piochas dies....
Ricas misses Nico and is drawing a picture of Nico and a ball Nico played with. Porfirio tells Ricas not to be sad, that Nico is in a great place and is very happy. He goes on for a while, trying to cheer Ricas up. Ricas turns to Porfi and says "Thank you, Pa. You're not as bad as you were before."
Fernanda is moving, I think at Diego's request, so that she won't be endangered by being near him. Salas comes to get her. Fernanda asks Diego if she can give him a kiss. Diego asks "Why, was I going to die?" She tells him that as a mother, she wants to give him a kiss, and she does so, more or less. She tells Diego that she has always loved him from the day he was born.
Porfirio is about to be operated on. The doctor is explaining (probably uselessly) what he is planning to do. Isa watches from a window into the room.
Circe berates Felipa for going to see Gavino. She tells Felipa that she doesn't give a damn about Gavino, and José is going to keep after us until we kill him.
Just then, she gets a photo on her phone: a photo of a bloody Piochas lying on the ground. Circe tells Felipa that José has killed Piochas.
José comes to see Gavino. He shows Gavino the photo of Piochas and berates Gavino for "sending this dog to kill me, after all I did for you." Gavino replies that he knows that José paid the crooked lawyer to make sure that Gavino rotted in prison. "You wanted me to stay here, wanted me to die here. Piochas risked his life to get me out of here." José tells Gavino he's got it all wrong, that he's old and hallucinating. Gavino tells José that here in prison, no one will hurt him because he's the boss. Whereas you, José, when you leave here, you'll have to keep looking in all directions, because you'll find out what happens to traitors.

Porfirio is about to be operated on. The doctor is explaining (probably uselessly) what he is planning to do. Isa watches from a window into the room.
Circe berates Felipa for going to see Gavino. She tells Felipa that she doesn't give a damn about Gavino, and José is going to keep after us until we kill him.
Just then, she gets a photo on her phone: a photo of a bloody Piochas lying on the ground. Circe tells Felipa that José has killed Piochas.
José comes to see Gavino. He shows Gavino the photo of Piochas and berates Gavino for "sending this dog to kill me, after all I did for you." Gavino replies that he knows that José paid the crooked lawyer to make sure that Gavino rotted in prison. "You wanted me to stay here, wanted me to die here. Piochas risked his life to get me out of here." José tells Gavino he's got it all wrong, that he's old and hallucinating. Gavino tells José that here in prison, no one will hurt him because he's the boss. Whereas you, José, when you leave here, you'll have to keep looking in all directions, because you'll find out what happens to traitors.
Falsa Identidad - Cap. 44 - 2/3
José insists to Gavino that "Circe will be mine one day, you'll see." Gavino replies that Circe put a price on José's head. José tells Gavino that he'll make sure Gavino never gets out of prison. And as of today, he, José, is the capo.

A month later...Porfirio is apparently in the hospital for an exam. He isn't feeling so well. Isa tells him that at least he's not bleeding. True, says Porfi, but I feel weak, fragile. He continues, the one thing that makes this worthwhile is that he's now living with them as a family. Amanda is happy, Ricas cares for him. And Isa? Isa tells him that nothing has happened between them for a month, so why does he think something will happen now? The doctor interrupts this conversation to give them the results. They're not good. The liver was rested to see whether it would recover, but it hasn't. The cirrhosis has destroyed the liver completely. A transplant is the only solution. Only a new liver will save Porfirio's life. Isa is stunned. "We did everything you said," she exclaims. The doctor then tells them that that treatment only works for 5% of patients! Porfirio is understandably furious.
Ramona is still having sex with Erick. She says that her body has meat on it, not like that anorexic Nuria. Erick tells her that the second commandment is not to mention Nuria. Erick says something about "this is business," and Ramona gives him money. [Yuck]

Ramona says everything is dangerous, and again encourages her to ask Erick for money. [So Ramona will get back the money she's given him?]
Circe is delighted with Diego's success in convincing the reluctant narcos to work with them rather than with José. She wants to celebrate and moves in for a kiss. Diego pulls away and tells her he has things to do, and he doesn't want her to have hopes of things that aren't going to happen. Circe asks if he's still thinking of Isabel. She asks, "When are you going to get her out of your head?"
Dr. Gutiérrez has apparently treated Piochas successfully and is about to leave. Mateo reminds him of the need for discretion and offers him money. He refuses it and leaves. As soon as he is gone, Piochas walks into the living room looking remarkably healthy. The miracles of telenovela medicine. Mateo expresses concern that José will be looking for him (Mateo). Piochas tells him that that's unlikely, since José doesn't know that Mateo and Piochas are socios. Piochas is also pleased that Mateo has told the reporters that he (Piochas) is dead. "And now that I'm healthy," continues Piochas, "we have to see how to get Gavino out of prison." Mateo mentions that with all the money Gavino is making in prison, he should be able to get a good lawyer.
José meets with Topo. He tells Topo that things aren't going well, they're losing territory and money. He tells Topo to get a plane ready, they're going to go to Mexico City to kill Circe. [At least, that's what I'm told darle cuello means. But this doesn't really gibe with José's determination that Circe will be his. Oh well, the episode ends on this note.].

Piochas lives--after all that gunfire, too. Funny what telenovela medicine can do. I just watched a storekeeper in Amar get shot once in the side and he's unconscious and near death. Piochas is up and around with all those bullet wounds, including Joselito's kiss of death shot. I guess his aim wasn't very good.
Isa's in a quandary. She needs money to pay for all the family expenses, plus a hospital bill and no job on the horizon (nor one that could pay enough). She won't go back to Babel on principle. Porfi can't work. She agrees to "separate" from Diego, but turns her back on him due to the danger he presents to her children. The "separation" was not working and she doesn't want some narcos keeping an eye out for her. Diego can't find legitimate work. But...to tell him he's been lying to her and never wants to see him ever, ever again? Ouch. She won't even let him talk. He IS engaged in activities she would not support, or take money for. What to do? (Since they are supposed to end up together, how is this going to be solved? Good story.)

Thanks so much, Juanita. That was a terrific recap! I remember being relieved I wasn’t recapping that night because the whole show was practically nothing but Mexican slang. Wow, Sergio Goyri was fabulous in his scene with José! I backed up and watched it twice! Of course most of what he said was blipped, but he basically ripped José apart verbally. He told him he had treated him like a son, and he’d betrayed him. Also, I loved when he told him that he’d now become protected in prison because he was pretty much running things. And José was in a very precarious predicament with a price on his head.
I’m starting to get a bad feeling about what Diego is doing. In his role as the doomed Rodrigo in Bajo el Mismo Cielo he had a good heart, was reconciled with his father, and then was executed for his crimes. He told Circe he would organize the crossings, and didn’t want anything to do with actually buying the drugs. But then he jumped in and rescued her with his sales pitch. I’m not seeing a path to redemption for him lately.
My feelings about Piochas have been all over the map. I despised him when he tried to sexually abuse Lourdes before she even got to Babel. And then he threatened Jim, IIRC, when he tried to protect Isa. But he’s grown on me. I was happy to see he didn’t die, and will be part of the effort to bring down José.
I was stunned José thinks he’ll end up with Circe. But then this mirrors her hope of ending up with Diego.
I’ve talked at times with my co-worker, who was born in Mexico and emigrated in her teens. She is now a US citizen. She tells me that, in Mexico, only a few privileged bureaucrats have any sort of medical insurance. And, if you need to be hospitalized or get regular treatment, you have to pay up front. So, even considering medical expenses are less than in the US, it is still implausible that Porfi would have gotten that surgery when Isa has barely worked and Porfi really not at all.

They didn't actually show him sign it, but Ignacio Salas apparently had Disgusto sign a piece of paper that said the money he stole from Fer would be made public if he ever said anything about Diego being alive and well in D.F. Whew. And now they're divorced.

I enjoyed seeing Salas trying to get into the habit of using "tú" with Fernanda. Even though Fernanda asked him to do this, it seemed to me that she was still a bit uncomfortable with his inviting her to dinner. Some social norms are more resistant to change, I guess.
And yes, Diego visits Ricas at school. Diego asks him whether he's happy that Corona is with him and his family. I'm not sure Diego expected Ricas' positive reply.

I was shocked at how awful a singer Porfi is. He was supposed to have been the lead singer for a band, probably playing rancheras and/or banda. The actor can't carry a tune at all! He's Brazilian, by the way. I thought they all had music in their DNA!

Novelera, ITA! Why in the world didn't they dub in a good singing voice? I kept thinking that's the singing that got teenage Isa's heart fluttering to marry him in the first place? Love is not only blind, but deaf too.
