I'm shocked, but delighted, the Fer and Marlene confrontation happened so soon. Isa sure didn't dilly dally around when Marlene, having a meltdown in her wedding gown at the dress shop, phones Isa and begs for help. Next thing you know, there's Isa at the rescue, with Fer in tow and all lies were unpacked. I think I'll have to take another look at that scene.
Gavino was a proud popa to hear his little girl was getting her cocaine to delivery.
A great start to the conversation, Niecie. Many thanks.
I found last night's episode was rather frustrating. I'll put a bit of flesh on Niecie's account. I don't understand Marlene's behavior. She's very unsure what to do about her wedding to Augusto, whom she now distrusts. She calls Isa and asks to see her right away. Isa comes to the wedding dress store, where Marlene is trying on a rather attractive white gown. They talk, and then Isa tells her she knows one person who can tell Marlene the truth. Out comes Fernanda, who has apparently accompanied Isabel. At first, Fernanda doesn't understand the problem, since she has no idea that Marlene and Augusto have had a relationship for years, and it is Augusto that Marlene is planning to marry. Once Isabel and Marlene make that clear to Fernanda, she is understandably very angry. Indeed, she slaps Marlene. What's frustrating to me is that Marlene, who has been plagued with doubts, reveals none of this to Fernanda. She makes it seem as if she's perfectly happy to be marrying Augusto. Indeed, she says "I'm very much in love with Augusto," which is when Fernanda slaps her. Marlene's behavior makes no sense to me. Why doesn't she tell Fernanda about her doubts? That, after all, is why she asked Isa to come see her. Am I missing something, or is this just a botched episode?
Here are some other highlights of last night's episode:
1) I think it's thanks to Diego that Circe has a plan to trick José into thinking she was going to transport the half ton of coke in a big truck. The plan works (except for the poor guys who rode with the truck, most of whom were killed). Circe and her women transport the coke in the same way as the first time, in packages strapped to their bodies. How they do this with a half TON of coke isn't clear. ??? Oh well.... José is furious at being outsmarted. And, as Niecie notes, Gavino feels proud of Circe's accomplishment (partly because he may finally be beginning to recognize Circe's abilities, and partly because she outsmarted José, who I think Gavino wisely continues to mistrust).
2) Porfirio asks Isabel where he can get the money for the treatment, and Isabel assures him that she will help him. He's the father of her children. She tells him he has to be strong, for his children. She indicates that her help will include financial help, and Porfi makes it clear that he does NOT want her to involve Diego in this.
3) Amanda did in fact take the passports in the backpack when she went with her father, but she decided not to give them to him. We now see her take them out of the backpack and put them back where they had been.
4) Felipa is distrustful of Augusto. "Why did José leave you alive and kill Brandon?" she asks him. Augusto says José let him live in order to deliver a message to Circe.
Question: Why does Porfirio say "usted" to Amanda? I know that different countries have different uses of tú and usted (and vos), but I thought that Porfi was Mexican, and I thought Mexicans use tú to their kids. ???
hmm, our not want-to-be Sultana is stuffed into a bag with a bunch of rocks and rolled off a dock into the sea, yikes!
Juanita, I'm thinking Marlene would've spilled out all her doubts if Isa had showed up alone. Maybe false pride got the better of her when Fer entered, so she stood up for her tainted love.
thanks Niecie and Juanita!
I too was surprised, especially that Isa was bringing Marlene and Fer together with no warning, and then doing the scene with Marlene clinging to that wedding gown after talking to Disgusto about calling off the wedding, and falling back on her lifelong dream rather than going for the facts, whew, and then giving Fer her address so they could have a sit down chat with Disgusto.
not quite sure why Isa kept the secret, she says to protect Diego, I thought it was because of her promise to Marlene, and I think everyone has said in turn that Diego will kill him.
nana Felipa with her cigar, "when the ashes rise with the smoke it means a traitor is near by", Disgusto is quick to throw out Diego's name, Ha!
Juanita, could it be the word Porfi used with Amanda was the spanish word for used.
ah, and I think the drugs were all in backpacks this time.
that was an interesting conversation Gavino had with Mateos who has set up the smuggling and questions why it's worth it, cigarettes, chocolate, etc, so Gavino explains, he knows people and can see their weaknesses, and will use these things to draw people to him to create his own business run right there from prison.
Isa got the job as waitress
Gabriela got money from Deivid, Paloma, Jim, but none from Nuria who spent all hers on drugs.
Juanita, I've heard that in some communities of Mexico they use usted for the second person, familiar or not. Porfi uses it with everybody, Isa, his children. I noticed Amanda is switching back and forth when talking to him, tú/usted.
deb, I remember when Isa asked Diego what he would do if he met Disgusto. And Diego said, I would ask him qué hubo, and after 5 seconds I will beat him to death. That is why she decided not to tell him.
Look what a great job everyone does without a detailed recap. Thanks all. I have an insane day at work and no time to comment.
But I concur with Juanita. Did not understand Marlene switching up when Fer was there and acting like all was hunky dory.
Lucio, welcome. I don't think I've seen you here before.
Deb, the money that, I think, Paloma handed over was from all the dancers combined.
I love to see José get burned. However, he said something about Diego breaking their pact. I fear he's going to go after Isa.
Niecie, I agree that Marlene would have been more open with Isa alone--that's why she called Isa to come, after all. And it wasn't wise for Isa to have included Fernanda without giving Marlene warning and without telling Fernanda about Marlene and Augusto. Even so, I was really surprised that Marlene, so troubled with doubts, would hide them all from Fernanda. Oh well....
deb, I was pretty sure Porfi said "usted," but I went back and listened to the conversation again. When Amanda tells Porfi she loves/cares for (quiero) him a lot, he replies "and I you" using "usted."
Thanks for the info about carrying the coke in backpacks. I hadn't realized that. That makes more sense than doing it strapped to their bodies, but that's a pretty heavy load to be carrying. If there were 16 (counting Circe), that would still be more than 60 lbs per person.
I'm due to recap tonight. As always, it may not be up until tomorrow. It has been a physically exhausting day....thank goodness for DVR.
NOTE: Poetic license taken throughout; some scenes combined for continuity’s sake.
*After Fer delivers a girlie hard right to Marlene face, Mar calmly offers her place for a meet-up with Disgusto to clear up all these half-lies and gives Fer her address saying, she’ll call her when it’s convenient. Fer takes off, visibly upset while Isa asks Mar to forgive her for springing the wronged wife on her. Rightfully (IMHO), Mar wants nothing else, ever, to do with Isa. She says she needed Isa and not a tag-along Fer at a very vulnerable moment. Isa says she hopes someday Mar will thank her.
*Isa runs after Fer to ask her forgiveness for springing the mistress on her without advanced notice. Fer does. Now she understands all Disgusto’s shenanigans—trips to the D.F., swanky apartment, etc. Fer tells Isa she was a fool. She knew Disgusto was ambitious and calculating, but that he loved her in his own way—and it was all a lie. Once back home, Isa tells Fer it was time she knew the truth about Disgusto. When Isa slips and says what a great person Mar is, Fer bristles. Disgusto didn’t fool her, Mar always knew he was a married man. They agree to keep this information from Diego. Later on, Fer is at the restaurant mulling over her marriage to Disgusto. Boss Man tells her to get to work, they'll have patrons to feed in three hours.
*The contrabanders have arrived in Nogales, AZ after a difficult trek across mountains, desert wastelands and rivers. While they wait for the movers to come get the merchandise, Diego and Circe HAVE to share a room in a motel. Oddly, Circe is perfectly coiffed and her red lipstick is still brilliantly painted on. She does need a bath, or so she says. She expects to woo Diego back into her arms with the aid of an X-rated Teddy. For a moment, all Viewerville is led to believe he falls for the oldest trick in the book—so tired he conjures up Isa and makes love, when it’s really not. Fortunately for Isa, no coupling takes place. Circe tries hard, though. She tells Diego she just wants to take back what is hers, meaning Diego. Diego manages to keep pushing her away. She’s sure he rose to the occasion, but for Diego he says, in effect, that’s just biology. He rebuffs her because he’s in love with Isa and sex with Circe wouldn’t be right. (YAY for now, but everyone knows—there’s no fury like a woman scorned.) (Interesting side note: Diego calls Circe “hija” while he calls Isa “mi amor.”) Before things get too maudlin for viewers, Ramona appears. Time to go.
*Gavino, looking quite dandy in his dress blues, gets a visit from the guys that knifed him earlier. The head guy sort of apologizes—business es business. Calmly but with conviction, Gavino explains the Colombians are no longer after him and he wants them to work for him here on the inside. They scoff, momentarily. How will they get paid? Gavino says he pays with legal tender. I guess the convicts are convinced it’s a good deal.
*Porfi is having a fun day in the park, with Amanda at least. Ricas is sitting out kicking the ball around. Papi sends Mandy to get some French Fries to cheer him up. There she meets Cancer Boy, who tells her he’s been cured. Meanwhile, Porfi has another episode. This time, he’s out cold and blood runs out of his mouth. Ricas, Mandy, Cancer-Free Boy and his mother rush to his side. Mandy calls Isa. Porfi is hauled off in an ambulance. At the hospital, Porfi is wheeled into the emergency OR. Cancer-Free Boy is intimately familiar with hospitals and tells Mandy there’s nothing here to be afraid of. Bad news is the first to arrive, so he’s sure her dad is going to be ok. The doc tells Isa that Porfi needs to start treatment right away or the damage to his liver will be irreversible. He also tells her he’ll need super taking care of, a comfy room, no heavy lifting, and oh, money for the treatments (just what Isa needs right now).
*Chucho is now officially registered in school. He tells Diana he didn’t know it would be so easy. Well, the hard part is getting to the finish line. He thanks Diana for the push she gave him. She notes that he is going for social work. Chucho wants to help people in the community that need a hand. He learns Disgusto makes Diana feel uncomfortable.
*Jim and Marlene have a heart-to-heart chat before rehearsal starts. He doesn’t like to see her all sad and bothered. She reviews everything that happened to her in the last few hours. She realizes Fer is not the monster Disgusto made her out to be. She admits she’s in a dilemma—go into the marriage with doubts or give up her dreams of a comfortable life with a man she thought she loved unconditionally. To her query about Disgusto’s “work,” Jim says he doesn’t think Dissy ever worked for the Gaona cartel, but if he did, or does, he hides it well. As for her future, Jim tells her she’s the only one who can decide.
*Meanwhile, Disgusto has an impromptu, forced visit with Joselito (don’t call me that) in the back of José’s car. José tells him he’s going to arrange a little target practice for whomever tipped off Circe that he was on her tail. That wouldn’t be Disgusto, would it? Piochas blocks any attempt for Dissy to jump out the door. Dissy swears it wasn’t he; it could have been anybody. He tells José that this is the first time Diego worked with her—something about a debt he owed her. She was in trouble with the Colombians and had to move the merchandise in a hurry. He also tells him Circe is living with Ramona. Joselito has ordered Felipa to be kidnapped. She’s scared to death as José taunts her. He tells her he ought to kill her for shooting him, but his real aim is to hurt Circe. He laughs maniacally as he announces that when he’s through with her instead of two eyes, she’ll only have one eye to, presumably, read her cards.
**>>FF>> Nuria needs money to pay Gabriela back and wants to pawn her grandmother's ring. Erik tests the ring and tells her it might be worth 2K. He gives it back and hands her some cash to cover her debt. Nuria thinks the debt will be transferred to Erik, but he says it’s a gift, free and clear. Then he slips the ring on her finger (very romantic like) and asks her to go to the movies and then that he likes her, a lot.
*In a very clever ruse, Mateo appears as a “substitute” delivery man at the prison back door with the “groceries” Gavino ordered. They let him through and he passes them on to some paid prison flunky (or trustee). A guard delivers a covered dish to Gav in his cell. When he takes the lid off, he finds the phone he ordered. He calls Mateo right away to thank him. He says he chose well in appointing Mateo his most favored status sidekick.
*Diego and Circe part ways, a ways out of Nogales proper. She says she still has some pending business and is staying on a little longer. Diego is going back to Mexico (just like that—tn magic). He doesn’t think they’ll see each other again, but Circe says don’t be too sure.
*José and two of his henchmen break into Diego’s house. They don’t find anyone home—well, geesh, it’s the middle of the day. He’s angry and knocks a few things over. Then to leave his mark he shoots Ricas’ dog (sorry, I forgot his name, but sadly, he is no more).
*There’s a patio conversation between Nuria and Gabriela. The gist of what I could understand is that Gabby’s sister is in hospital in Venezuela and will either get the money or the medicine the following day. Then they start to discuss men and Deivid overhears Gabby describing the chocolate on his shirt she helped change. He comes up before she can wax poetic about his chest. She thinks he’s starting another argument, but he claims he just wanted to know how her sister was.
*Disgusto stops Mar on her way up to the 2d floor of their apartment to ask where she’s been because dinner should have been on. When she gives him the long tale, he criticizes her for helping her Babel friends. They should solve their own problems. She in turn wonders if he’s going to dine in. It’s just a question, she claims, when he takes that as a criticism of his actions. She wants to know since at any moment, lately, he gets a call and rushes out. She wants to know, as contritely as possible if she matters to him, does he care for her, or if something happened to her, would he just find somebody else. He says that’s stupid talk—hasn’t he “kept” her all these years? Isn’t that enough? (The way he says it should give her pause. It doesn’t sound very loving or appreciative that she waited for him all those years.) Mar says she just needs to feel secure. Dissy finally realizes he needs to turn on all the middle-aged charm he can muster to tell her he loves her and will give her everything he has, etc. etc.
*Circe, Ramona and the Colombians are celebrating their success. Colombian head mover is really pleased with her team. Circe is ready to do more business with them, but for that, she needs a favor. She wants him to find a way to make Emilio Guevara keep on working for them. Sounds like a done deal.
*Isa is at Porfi’s bedside the next morning. She’s genuinely concerned about him. She tells him she’ll take care of him. Porfi mentions contacting his dad, even though he knows how she feels about Mateo. Oh, and he doesn’t want to die.
*Diego is back, checking in on Deivid. He swears it’s the last time he moves drugs. This was a favor for Circe, to make up for hurting her when he dumped her for a roll in the hay with Silvia, but they are even now. He tells Deivid all about his night at the motel struggling against Temptation. What kept him from giving in was thinking of Isa and the kids and that he wants to be faithful.
*Fer comes back home and sees the mess, the dog’s body and blood everywhere and the message, written in blood, “The Gaona Cartel were here.”
What a marvellous recap, Anita! MANY thanks! It's clear, complete, and a delight. There were so many gems I enjoyed--listing them would almost reproduce the recap. You've got a wonderful way with words, phrases like "a girlie hard right" to Marlene's face; and "Gavino, looking quite dandy in his dress blues." And you make some excellent points in snarky phrases like "Diego and Circe HAVE to share a room in a motel. Oddly, Circe is perfectly coiffed and her red lipstick is still brilliantly painted on." And yes, Disgusto couldn't be more, um, Disgusto than when he responds to Marlene about her "stupid talk" "hasn’t he “kept” her all these years? Isn’t that enough?" You're right: his words should definitely give her pause. Whether they will or not, or at least whether the pause will outweigh her desire for luxury and a man, remains to be seen.
I too noticed the "hija" business with Circe. However, IIRC, Diego also at times calls Isa "hija" as well. I recall thinking that was a bit odd, both with Isa and with Circe.
Speaking of Circe, it looks as if she's found a way to force Diego to continue to help her. Sigh.
Gotta run. I'm supposed to be making phone calls today urging people to get out and vote (and vote for the good guys/gals). Vote early and often!
what a wonderful recap Anita! so complete it was like walking back through the story.
a couple little things I picked up in the english caps,
Chuchos explanation to Diana, was that he wanted to help his people back home, maybe teach math and english so they don't get cheated.
when asked if he was going to kill Felipe, Jose was talking about when Felipa shot him, that he realized there were worse things than death.
Erik ?? (is that his name?), is he the same guy that was just with Ramona?, anyway Gabriela was telling Nuria how hot he is, she saw him without his shirt and his stomach was like a washboard, where Deivid later said if she needs to do laundry he has a washboard she could use.
was Arizona where Diego's fake ID is wanted by the police?, I guess Circe put him on a plane to fly back.
and I was surprised no one at the prison recognized Mateo.
Thanks for the additions and corrections. So, deb, chocolate means washboard abs? I wondered where the chocolates came from because I didn't remember any when she was changing his shirt a couple of episodes ago. I do remember him saying in the patio he didn't know she liked chocolates and then I missed what he said sort of like she could come around for some more. Anyway, it's minor, but I'd love to know.
Mateo was wearing a baseball cap pulled down low. In case you didn't watch Reina de Corazones, we all made fun of Nicolas/Javier using only a baseball cap as a disguise. No one recognized him, so I guess it works. Ha!
Thanks SO much, Anita. Terrific recap, with a generous dose of snark!
It turns out chocolate abs are a thing, according to the internet. It describes the way a chocolate bar has rounded pieces and indented pieces where you break off a piece to eat.
Fernanda, quite rightly, isn't ready to have any kind thoughts about Marlene.
They keep hinting that Disgusto will make a move on Diana, and the latest hint was her telling Chucho about his making her uncomfortable. Will this be the final straw for Marlene?
Disgusto isn't as smart as he thinks he is. After Marlene found those documents about his mortgaging FERNANDA'S house, he should have been working overtime on sucking up to her. Instead, he's brusque and dismissive.
I could have slapped Circe into next week for asking the Colombian thug to force Diego to work with her.
Poor Ricas, he's going to really mourn the loss of the dog and the walks with Diego. I'm wondering if Fer will clean everything up before the others get home.
Porfi should absolutely call his papí for the money for his treatment. It's nuts that Isa plans to work hard to pay for his care, when Mateo is loaded from his selling young girls. And his doctor STILL hasn't told him to stop drinking! The doc should have guessed by now that Porfi is too dumb to understand the connection between alcohol and his liver damage.
Yes, I'm pretty sure Erik is the same guy that got money from Ramona for his "skills" and then gave all or part of it to Nuria.
Well, I don't see how Felipa can get out of Joselito taking one of her eyes.
This show keeps on roaring along and surprising me again and again. The one thing that did NOT surprise me was Circe all over Diego in that hotel room.
Anita, muchas gracias for the recap of Friday's episode. There was so much I didn't pick up, like Circe asking the Colombians to make Diego work for her. And thanks for the laughs. This ditty cracked me up: Mar says she just needs to feel secure. Dissy finally realizes he needs to turn on all the middle-aged charm he can muster to tell her he loves her and will give her everything he has, etc. etc.
I've feared the dog was in danger from the start, but still. So sad, glad they did it off screen. Joselito is a villain with a capital V, but he does bring such flourish to his power trip, writing "The Gaona cartel was here." I see his ending like Tony Montana's in Scarface.
