Nothing Good Going on in Tonight's Episode
Sergio Infiltrates Estrella's World
On the way back from their "happy family" outing. Sergio's car gets a flat tire. Azul is asleep in the back seat. He wants to call for a tow truck. Estrella tells him that will take way too long. She is sure that he can change the tire and if he can't, she will. He goes into the trunk and while she is trying to get a cell signal to call Fabián to tell him they are running late, Sergio throws the jack and the lug wrench into the high grass along the road. Oh, no! It seems that nobody can change the tire without the appropriate tools. What to do? Estrella says that they cannot call for a tow truck because there is no cell signal where they are. She makes him stop a car and borrow the necessary tools on the spot. The tire gets changed and they arrive back at Estrellas' house.
In the mean time, Fabián has gotten tired of waiting for her and since she has not answered any of his texts, he is concerned and goes to see if she has arrived at her home yet. What he doesn't expect to see is Sergio wiping some auto grease off of Estrella's forehead and the two of them, along with Azul, happily chatting like a family on the street outside of her house. Fabián leaves but doesn't know that Sergio has seen him and is fully enjoying his discomfort.
Estrella finally gets to an annoyed Fabián's place as he is getting ready to clear the supper table. She tells him all about the flat and manages to make it clear she is there for him not Sergio. They enjoy a COCA-COLA and kiss.
Later, Sergio talks to Erika and it turns out that they both have the same goal: to break up Estrella and Fabián. He wonders if she contacted him about Azul to try to break up Fabián and Estrella. She insists that she only did it for the good of Azul but thinks they will get along very well with their shared goal .
Valentín Goes Over the Edge
Oliver witnesses Valentín taking his anger out about Pascual and Perla at the beach. Oliver tells the human time bomb that he needs to talk to Pascual He tells Oliver that he feels like a volcano ready to erupt.
It is supper time and Valentín thinks he is going to have supper with Pascual as they chat about changes in town since Pascual was gone. There is a knock at the door and it is Perla. Valentín does not hide his anger that Pascual invited Perla over to eat supper AGAIN. He explains that Pascual should have told him so he wouldn't end up feeling like a third wheel. Perla offers to leave but Valentín says that is not necessary. Pascual asks why he has to leave. Pascual says it is because he is JEALOUS then tries to deny saying it. When he cannot wheedle out of it, he lies saying he is jealous of Perla's relationship with his bro Pascual. They cannot do the things together like they always have done since he is now going out with Perla. He leaves.
Gabriel on the Crazy Train to Hell
Marina is taking care of Iker. She tells him how frustrated she is without knowing about her past because she has this "stronger than life itself" feeling that she has a child and she needs to find that child. She needs to take that child in her arms and hug them. Iker says that she can hug him and pretend he is that child just like he can hug her and pretend she is his mother who he misses so much. They hug.
Gabriel runs into Brisa at the restaurant and shows her his loan papers from the bank. Her money will be deposited the day after tomorrow. Then they will be even. Gabriel makes it clear that he is grateful that she lent him the money but he is with Marina and will not be returning to her. Brisa goes off the deep end and starts addressing everyone at the restaurant that she is going to make an announcement. Gabriel asks her if she is nuts??? He then asks her not to do it because Iker will end up in an orphanage. She says he knows what her terms are. Marina and Iker arrive. Brisa tells him that he has one day to make up his mind and leaves.
Marina remarks that by looking at Gabriel's face it is evident that NOTHING is going on. She wants the truth. Back at home, he has told Marina the truth and insists he will not go back with Brisa. He wants only Marina. When she decides she has to go because tomorrow she has to work, he easily talks her into dancing and romancing with him.
At her her house, Meche wants to know why Brisa is crying. She tells her mother that Gabriel will return their money the day after tomorrow. Meche will believe it when she sees it. Brisa doensn't know why he rejected her after all she did for him. Meche tells her you can't buy love and true love is unconditional. It is time for her strong and brave Brisa to learn from her mistakes. It is clear that she hasn't learned her lesson yet since all she talks about is making Gabriel pay for everything he did to her.
Everything Else
Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde Yazmín tells her father about what a good day she had fishing but when they continue conversing like family as he prepares Estrella's supper, she reminds him that he has to keep things straight. Having a good day fishing with him is one thing but if he thinks that they can be a happy family at home, he is mistaken. They were at one time but HE RUINED that. She is only in his house because she has to be. She goes to her room.
While in her room, Oliver starts texting her. He is outside her room. He wants to come in. She first says no but he comes in anyway. They chat. He tries to kiss her again. She tells him she will soon be gone. He doesn't care. Just as they start to kiss, her grandfather knocks on the door and comes in. He asks what is going on???
Gonzalo and Meche are at dance lessons. In the middle of a song, Meche gets upset since it was Ulises' favorite song. She has to leave and Gonzalo follows. He understands what she is going through. The sorrow comes out of nowhere. He tells her that she doesn't need to forget the past but also needs to make room for new experiences. She feels she is betraying her late husband's memory but then, on the other hand, he doesn't deserve her tears. Gonzalo advises her to let her rancor go.
Jarifa,
Thank you for your excellent recap, replete with important details that I hadn't understood. A full gamut of emotions were peppered throughout tonight's story with a liberal dose of anger, stubborness and stupidity running rampant.
"Iker says that she can hug him and pretend he is that child just like he can hug her and pretend she is his mother who he misses so much". Oh, my heart. Surely this must be the call of the blood.
Jarifa, I gather Gabriel told Marina Brisa was threatening him if he didn't go back with her but he didn't tell her Iker isn't his son did he? I don't understand why he continues to hold back from telling Marina the truth especially as it's clear Brisa has no compunction about announcing everything to the world. It is Iker who will be devastated. Summon your courage, tell her and face up to what you've done (whatever it is that transpired so that viewerville knows as well).
"Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde Yazmin" was perfect. She is really a piece of work. Her mother died in an accident. It was NOT intentional. She is so rigid and unforgiving bereft of compassion and forgiveness.
Sergio thinks he is so slick and has it all figured out, but he's just sick. I like that Estrella went right over to Fabian's and that he let go of his jealousy and they had the sweet dinner date they were meant to.
"human time bomb" had me smiling, that was a great descriptive! Valentin may be "dumb" but Pascual is "dumber" not sensing what is behind Valentin's tantrums! I'm surprised Perla hasn't caught on either. If Valentin doesn't find his voice, he doesn't deserve her.
Gonzalo is a mensch. He is understanding and empathetic. "The sorrow comes out of nowhere" is exactly right.
Is it just me or is Oliver getting a bit pushy? He needs to back up a bit and let Yaz breathe a bit...
Jarifa, this was terrific!
Diana
Diana, thanks. Things sure are hopping, aren’t they? From Marina’s response, it did not seem that Gabriel gave her the whole truth and excluded the Iker part. I, too, cannot understand his reluctance to do so. What will he tell her if Brisa reports him and he is arrested?
Gonzalo is truly a mensch. We need a mostly good character to go along with this motley group.
I was surprised that Oliver came right though the window and into Yazmín’s room even though she told him not to. He definitely needs to cool his jets. I do not think Gonzalo will be happy he came to visit Yaz at night with her pijama clad.
I have questions!
Lale agrees they married by force. Why is that true for her? Who is she saving? Herself? Reha?
Again, why is Attila so rude to Lale? It’s not her fault they had to get married. Actually, he put her in that position.
Was anybody else amazed that Attila was nice when Reha and Kande came to dinner?
What is the deal with Adnan and Kande? She said something about 40 years ago. She looks about 40 herself. She thoughtbubbles that Reha is never going to marry her. Is she setting her sights on Adnan now? He tries to duck her seeing him for financial advice but doesn’t succeed.
Do you think Reha realized Attila’s glasses aren’t prescription? Reha’s manner changed suddenly.
Why is Hasan going to a hotel after he’s released? Doesn’t he have a house? Or does he know that Kadir is looking for him?
Aha, Hasan did know Genghis Khan was still alive! I suspected as much.
I was a bit surprised that Karsu told Cedvet about her broken heart. He was very sweet. I was shocked though at how she blew up at the dinner. She was very rude. Up until now she’s been very stoic except when she gets a shock – then she throws a chair through the window or beats up Kande. But in between, she’s quite contained.
Maggie, I think Lale may have been trying to protect Reha and the children, but mostly she is infatuated with Atila and probably has hopes that proximity will help her cause and he will fall in love with her.
Hande and the 40 year allusion I can only guess is a typo on the part of the CC's or the writers. I'll bet it should be 14, not 40 years ago.
I imagine Reha did realize the glasses are clear glass. Then again, the fact that Atila constantly looks over them may mean they are prescription lenses so he needs to not look through them to see. But as a glasses wearer for distance, I either take my glasses off to see up close or do like Atila, look over them. (I no longer do this now as I had my left eye surgery and then cataract surgery in that eye. I can see far away in that eye, and close up in the right. When I have my right eyes cataract surgery I plan on asking for that one to be for close up vision. It is making my gardening life so much better!)
Yeah, Karsu really did blow up on that blind date. In all fairness, Irmak should have given it time. The day after a heartbreak is not the best plan. A dinner out together with just themselves would have been better. She is making progress in her relationship with Karsu, this will likely set her back again.
I'm guessing Hasan is going to a hotel to keep his release under cover. Wouldn't it be nice if in the end he isn't really in the Mafia but is an undercover operative? Unfortunately Atila has the blood of Osan in his conscience. I thought it was interesting that Hasan believes Karsu is a plant of Kadir.
Maggie, I think Attila blames Lale for this whole mess. She promised not to tell Reha what she learned, but did and Reha immediately ran to Hassan with “Attila seduced the mother of my 3 kids,” setting it all in motion.
Also, Dilaver told Hassan that Genghis Khan was alive. Dilaver is in a pickle since last night Attila ordered Dilaver to find out how Hassan got that info.
I also thought Lale was protecting her nieces and nephew. But, she doesn’t have a chance with Atilla! I wish Hasan could see her compared to Karsu, as far as who’s good for his son (if he cares). He might even think Lale was the spy!
If Reha knows A is a mafioso, why do the glasses matter? Is it because A is hiding? Doesn’t Reha know this? Reha could be dangerous if he tells the wrong people!
I was surprised at Karsu’s reaction to the blind date! Poor guy! She has overreacted before. I think she has serious emotional damage going far back to living with her mom after Adnan&Irmak left. It’s more interesting to have characters with a combination of good and bad traits, more like real life!
I worry about Dilaver. He is on a tightrope! I like him.
GK was so happy to be free from his death sentence. Atilla was wise to add that to his conditions. The brothers are very devoted. But GK is light and has a future while A’s world keeps getting darker. The strain really shows in his face. He does brighten when he sees Devin!
The Dark Knight lives mostly in darkness.
Adnan is starting to look suspicious! Hande is adept at finding her next target. (victim?) Maybe Adnan is really a serial philanderer who moves from wife to next wife with ease? Or non-wife? I’d like more info on how he met Filiz and that part of their lives. He has so much money, he can do whatever he’d like.
Babachita
What fabulous comments! I love them - they’ve really got me thinking. I can’t join in today because stuff is happening here, but mañana!
Thanks Jarifa, I enjoyed your “notes”, interesting and informative. Now Estrella and Fabian have two people against them. That might make it a little tougher. Actually three, because Azul sure isn’t going to help!
I was wondering if Sergio will have to go back and find the tools he through in the ditch, as I believe one of them mentioned it was a rental car.
Me he is so sensible when she talks to Brisa about love. But she really doesn’t seem to like Gabriel. I guess she feels he hurt her daughter, but I have no sympathy for Brisa. She gets less likable every episode. I’m not sure if she’ll go through with the announcement or not. But it’s not going to make Gabriela love her. And it’s obvious she cares nothing for Iker.
Gabriel needs to tell Marina the whole story of Iker. Diana, I agree with you about the call of the blood. With him lacking his mom and Marina lacking her son I’m not sure why they don’t put two and two together.
I’m tired of Yazzie blaming her father for her mother’s death. She’s almost 18. I can’t imagine what her grandmother told her but Fabian needs to tell her everything that happened.
Perla deserves better than Valentin and Pascual! And Oliver needs to quit showing up at Yazmin’s window at night. I hope Gonzalo puts a stop to that.
Liz
I enjoyed the comments. I think Lake is attracted to Atilla and the danger he represents. And she knows it’s her fault because Atilla told her not to tell her brother but she tells anyway. I can’t imagine Atilla ever being attracted to her after that. I also admit I never liked her and she might have done it to hurt Karsu. If she cared about Karsu and the kids she would have tried to get Reha to at least give Karsu child support. But we know Atilla married her to protect Karsu and the children. And Reha was thrilled when he heard she was marrying. He thinks he’ll always be safe now. He likes his rich brother-in-law just because he’s rich. I hope Adnan decides not to invest in his company.
Liz
Thanks, Liz. I hadn't even thought about Sergio retrieving the auto tools he literally ditched. He is so moneyed and entitled. "Gabriel needs to tell Marina the whole story of Iker." Is he that afraid of not appearing "perfect" in her eyes? I just don't get it. As for Pascual and Valentín, neither is the man that Perla deserves. They are like two stooges looking for a third. I hate to see her "settling" for Pascual because he is good enough. That just isn't going to do it.
I don't think I am rooting for any of these romances, except perhaps Gabriel and Marina. Oliver and Jaz, too young. They both need to grow up. Meche and Gonzalo, in a few years I can see together. This trying to force everyone into relationships. Perla should be in therapy for the rape she endured. I'm surprised, as she is trying to start dating, that she isn't freaking out. Why am I watching this again? The beach scenes I guess, and this patio.
I really enjoyed the two brothers by the sea. Before this Atilla seemed to share his father's disdain for Genghis Khan, but wasn't heartless enough to take his life. I caught a glimpse of their relationship as children. It seems they were close once. And, again, examples of the subtleties dizis have that many TNs lack were shown. GK offered to give himself up for whatever fate would be in store for him to somehow get his brother out of a doomed marriage.
Hande is no dummy. I doubt she'll lure Adnan away from Irmak. I was surprised she's ready to move off Reha so quickly. It seemed to me that she was head over heels earlier on. The prior relationship with Adnan is definitely a head scratcher, one of the ones dizis love to create and...much later...reveal in a flashback. I'm not thinking Adnan was unfaithful to Irmak with Hande. Can't imagine when or how they had a thing.
I just adore Cevdet. I keep telling myself they've shown him ready to off people before, but the book lover and comforter of Karsu warms my heart. He's also pretty handsome!
Reha seems to me to be a textbook narcissist. He seems somewhat capable of loving his offspring. But he's delighted his sister married into the mafia. He doesn't seem to care that this could be dangerous for her. He's thinking of ways to cash in. I was also surprised at how cordial Atilla was dining with him. He no longer needs to pretend to be that timid writer. The only thing I can think of is that playing along with Reha somehow helps keep Karsu and the kids safe.
Okay I have been a very sporadic watcher of this one. But what's up with Sebastian's swimmers. I remember him trying to get some woman pregnant & then tossing her cause it was his. But what's the deal? Past std? Stiletto to the groin? The guy gives off a super freak vibe so
Jest wonderin
"The needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few, or the one" The Wrath of Khan
The Red Tide Brings More than a Stench
Fabián tells his father that the sea seems strange. It has a very strong smell. Gonzalo asks if he thinks that is a sign that something is wrong. Fabián hopes that there isn't going to be a red tide because his main boat the Poseidon needs a new motor and his credit cards are charged to the max.
Porfirio has good news for Sergio. The government has issued a red tide advisory. It is good news for Sergio because the last time it happened it really affected the economy. Sergio concludes that will be able to buy property on the cheap because people will be desperate. When the advisory is lifted, Porfirio thins that a lot of fishermen will be happy to work for his corporation. Yes, Porfirio took care of the task he asked him to do. It didn't take much to sink the Poseidon.
Fabián tells the fisherman about the red tide advisory. Estrella says it is important that people know that the red tide does not affect fish and only shellfish needs to be avoided so people are not poisoned. Gonzalo adds that people get afraid because fish start dying because of a lack of oxygen in the water. Gabriel adds that if they are lucky it will be over in weeks but it could be months. Estrella says this is going to be difficult for those who have debts to pay. Gabriel reminds her that they all have debts.
Estrella overhears Gonzalo talking to Fabián about how they are going to cover their debts. Fabián has no intention of asking Estrella to pay him back right now. Her family has their own money problems. Fabián says they can always sell a boat and mortgage the house if it comes to that.
Pascual and Valentín have bad news for Fabián his boat the Poseidon's motor exploded and the boat has sunk. All the fish on board were lost. Porfirio tlels them that he si thereto support them.
Meche has to close her sand early because nobody is buying her fish.
Sergio talks to Meche trying to get her to talk to Estrella to help convince her to accept his offer to pay off her debt to Fabián. At first, she tells him that people like him don't do anything without wanting something in return. He says he only wants his child to have no worries. He tells Meche to think about it.
Estrella meets with Gonzalo and finds out how bad Fabián's financial situation is. He says that his son would never pressure her to pay him back now. They all help each other.
Both of Estrella's sisters try to talk Estrella into taking the money from Sergio. They cannot see why she wouldn't and do not understand her not wanting to be indebted to him. At first, Meche supports Estrella but as these conversations go on, her support starts to falter. Esterlla tells her that with her taking the money, Sergio is going to think he has some sort of control over her and Azul. She also tells her mother that he wanted her to abort her child. She will never forgive him for that. Meche says she won't pressure her but Sergio is in their lives like it or not. Sometimes in life you just have to do what needs to be done, and in this case, for her family and for Fabián. Frankly, she doesn't see there being any other choice.
Estrella goes to see Sergio and tells him that she will accept his help.
Yazmín's Protectors
Gonzalo is not impressed with finding Oliver in Yazmín's room. As much as Oliver protests that they are only friends, Gonzalo isn't buying it.He's been around. He tells Oliver if he wants to visit with his granddaughter he will come in the front door and visit with her in the living room. Yazmín asks Gonzalo not to tell her father because he will go after Oliver with a rifle. Gonzalo tells her that if Oliver doesn't follow his instructions, he will be the one with a rifle. They laugh. The next day Gonzalo tells Oliver to give Yazmín a break. She just finished her romance with Sergio and needs time before dating again. He adds that if he catches him sneaking around their house at night, he will take his harpoon to him!
Sergio unexpectedly shows up at Yazmín's door determined to get her back. He misses her! He loves her! She needs her pills from him! When she says she can get the pills on her own, he offers a new one that will take her places she has never been. He starts getting handsy and is all over her. She tells him to get away from her but he continues. Luckily for her, Fabián arrives and pushes him away from his daughter demanding to know what is going on.
Brisa Goes Down the Road to Crazy Town
Brisa calls Gabriel in the middle of the night to plead her case once more time only to have Marina answer phone. Brisa tells her that Gabriel is sleeping and hangs up on her. Brisa looks like she is ready to explode. She will get even!
The next morning, Brisa goes to get fresh bread for breakfast and a copy of her father's death certificate. While at the bakery, she asks to use their landline. She makes an anonymous call to the prosecutor's office informing them that Víctor Ayala an employee at the Records Office falsified documents and was involved in stealing a child. She goes to the Records Office to get the death certificate so she can witness his arrest. She watches and smirks as he spots her and blames her. She pretends she doesn't know him and knows nothing about what is going on.
Pascual's Solution
Pascual tells Valentín that he has the perfect solution to their problem. From now on, he will be included in anything that he and Perla are doing. He remembers that Valentín ALWAYS included him when the situation was reversed, so now he is going to do the same for him. Valentín looks horrified.
Will Marina Make the Move?
The next morning, Iker discovers Marina hiding from him under a sheet on his father's bed. He is happy to see her and asks her to make the pancakes for breakfast because she puts nuts in them unlike his father.
Later, Gabriel talks to her about the red tide and the sunken boat. He needs to save money and is planning on selling his truck. He gives her a box with a toothbrush in it. It is an invitation. She could save money, too, by moving in with him. He tells her to think about it.
Jarifa, perfect quote; one of my favorites...
Fairly fluent Spanish comprehension was a necessity tonight and I was admittedly lost throughout. It is nights like this that I am especially appreciative of your crystal clear, amazing rendition of all the dialogue and action. You brilliantly explained all that eluded and mystified me. Thank you.
I was so disappointed Estrella caved although I understood why. Sergio's snake venom permeated and tainted so much. Sinking the Posedian, professing his lyin' love and then making Estella and her family indebted to him gives him power and control over them and their lives.
Yaz has two persistent suitors. I was hoping Fabian would pummel Javier into the ground but unfortunately that didn't occur. Gonzalo isn't playing and hopefully Oliver now knows his place. And it's NOT in Yaz's room!
I was hoping for a Marina/Gabriel romantic interlude, waves crashing on the beach under moonlit skies as they professed their eternal love. Having Iker find them in bed together and Gabriel presenting Marina with a toothbrush to move in with him wasn't what I had in mind. :) The promise and hope of love is what has successfully propelled this thus far. Hopefully the writers will remember that next time!
"Brisa Goes Down the Road to Crazy Town" said it all. Malevolence is percolating in that fevered brain of hers and accusing Victor has surely unleashed a series of pivotal and painful events.
Pascual wants the three Musketeers and Valentin wants nothing of the sort. How long will Valentin remain quiet??
Jarifa, so many fires; which ones will be put out and which will erupt? What an excellent summary...
Diana
I still can’t figure out what the deal is between Kande and Adnan. He obviously sees what she’s fishing for and is evading her. She sure is good at giving smoldering looks, but it’s not doing her any good. We’re still left wondering what went on with them in the past!
Atilla sure is scary when he gets a mad on. Here he has Reha on his knees just by twisting his wrist. If he’s going to do that, why did he fake being nice at dinner? To keep Hande in the dark? And boy oh boy all that anger when he was working the punching bag. It made me wonder if Karsu should set her heart on someone with that kind of rage in them. I like what you said Babachita – that the dark knight lives in darkness.
When Hassan saw GK walk by, he sighed that he was still the same. What’s wrong with him? Should he have on fancy mafia clothes and strut? Was he not walking down the street in a manly manner? Also, why is Hassan so fixated on the three kids thing? Anyway, it was sad that a father wasn’t glad to set eyes on a son after so long.
Now Karsu’s been cheated on twice and has heard the dinner guest say he doesn’t want to bother with someone who has problems. She’s swearing off men! But she didn’t seem to feel embarrassed about the show she put on at dinner. I was hoping she’d have a little insight into why her mother was so flipped out after Adnan took off with Irmak. A deceived heart can make you act nutsy. Karsu elects to go back into stoic mode.
Maggie, you are doing a great job starting the conversations on this show. It's still my favorite of the evening. I used to watch this and Velvet (on Telemundo) simultaneously switching from one to the other during commercials. Since Velvet is having a problem with the sound on YouTube TV I'm just watching this at 9 and have to watch Velvet the next day when the on demand version is offered to get the dialogue portion of the sound. How many recall stereo systems with a and b speakers, one was treble, the other bass it seemed. Well that is what appears to be going on with my TV, I'm only getting the music track and muted dialogue track.
Ipek and the guy with the sports car remind me of one of the flashback scenes with Irmak. Didn't she have a boyfriend that drove a flashy car before she ran off with Adnan? Omer definitely has a crush on her and he was so upset when Ipek gave him a tip for delivering packages since he wouldn't accept her paying for the bracelet he got her. I see her point of view. Mom and Tia both advised her not to lead him on, guys do not just give girls gifts out of the goodness o their hearts. He has feelings for her. Omer's dad also gave him good advice, study and forget about girls at this time, lol.
I had the impression Atila hit a nerve in the palm of Reha's hand that sent him to his knees. Good thinking on his feet when Hande entered. Pretend you are giving Atila advice on how to propose. Not that he needs to propose, but the absence of an engagement ring for Lale made up part of the dinner discussion. True to form, Lale claims those outward signs aren't important to her.Hande may have expectations that Reha should put his money where his mouth is and get her an engagement ring.
Funny scene, Feliz dumping the bickering children on Reha and Hande at the dinner party at Atila's. Poor grandma just wants a little peace and quiet and a gossip session with her sister and niece.
Glad the recap was helpful, Diana. The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock are two of my all time favorite movies, so how could I not include that quote? ; )
Anyway, I was also so very disappointed that Estrella caved but the pressure was unrelenting and unfortunately for her, she is a good person with values. As for Meche's influence, I never can predict where she is going to come down on issues because there have been a couple situations already in which she sounded like she is thinking one way and then took the opposite point of view.
Uh, the tooth brush presentation and Iker finding Marina under the covers wasn't what I was hoping for either. We needed some romance!
I loved your description in reference to Brisa: "Malevolence is percolating in that fevered brain of hers." Nothing more to say!
Hey, we also learned facts about a "red tide." Being a lifelong learner. I appreciated that! ; )
Can't wait to see what is next!
Thanks Jarifa, your notes made a depressing episode more enjoyable. But it did seem that there was nothing positive last night.
I suspected Sergio was behind Fabian losing his boat but wasn’t sure. I also didn’t realize Gabriel gave Marina a toothbrush. Boy, two major disappointments. I can’t imagine opening a box that looked like a jewelry box and getting a toothbrush.
I wonder if Brisa will come to regret what she did. I don’t think her mom and sisters realize how vindictive she is. Not sure why she even thought that it would make her feel better if Gabriela goes to jail and loses Iker. What a horrible person.
I think Estrella knows Sergio better than her mom and sisters. There was a reason she didn’t want to take money from him. I thought they knew he wanted her to get an abortion. Meche looked unhappy for a moment but money won out.
Liz
I loved when Atilla hurt Reha. Maybe Reha now realizes what he did by going to his dad and whining about Atilla stealing his wife! And I loved when Atilla told Lale that her brother and Hande would not be coming over anymore.
Poor Karsu. Irmak should have had the dinner just the two of them. Did she expect Karsu to be happy a day after Atilla’s marriage.
I loved when Felix dumped the kids off at the little dinner party. I wonder if the dance performance will be tonight. Poor Karsu will be facing the newly weds and Reha. Strange they he doesn’t want Hande there. I hope he can leave Karsu alone.
Liz
Kat – I haven’t participated much on Caray for the past few years because mornings aren’t the best time for me to jump in. Plus I’m in California so that puts me 3 hours later than the east coast, so I thought I’d be too late. And then it dawned on me that (duh!) I could post late at night. When I get on the site at that time I’m always amazed to see the A.Mar recap is up – nice and long and detailed! Since there’s no Karsu recap, I can jump right in with a comment.
Talking about Velvet – our local PBS station ran the original one from Spain. I really enjoyed it! I peeked in once at this new version and just noticed that it seemed to be set in the present day. Am I right? The Spanish version was set in the late 50s or early 60s. Also the seamstresses lived in a dorm-like area of the store itself. It looked like that might not be the case in this new version, but I just looked at part of one episode.
Great recap!!! I don’t get the whole boat sinking thing. We know the boats are pulled onto the sand overnight. I don’t remember seeing a dock at any time. Did we? Or was the boat maybe out there with its nets set? Why was nobody on it? And why were there fish in the boat if it was sitting with the nets set?
Thanks jarifa. I tend to watch this distracted so your notes help. Last night it was the garden and cucumbers calling me away. I canned my first attempt at dill pickles. They were supposed to be in a hot water bath for 15 minutes. Not me forgetting about them and turning the stove off 30 or 40 minutes later. It is a huge canning pot, fits 7 quarts, so I'm thinking it took at least half that time to come to a boil. I detest dill pickles so my daughter's family will be the recipient of this experiment.
Maggie, all good questions. The fish should be on ice if they have been pulled in, and why wouldn't you they bring in the catch each day. This show makes so little sense I've given up on thinking it is at all researched.
I didn't realize Brisa was going to get the death certificate. I wonder if Victor doctored the autopsy results. I can't remember if he was involved in that in the first or second episode.
OT, Maggie over on Telemundo another dizzy started on Monday. Bahar. It seems pretty good so far. I don't think this one will involve the Mafia at all. That will make a nice change.
I also thought Meche knew about Sergio demanding the abortion. But I do agree they should take the money. Estrella is owed back child support, especially now he is acknowledging Azul and wants to be part of her life.
Anonymous, Sergio is now shooting blanks. In an early episode the Dr told him he couldn't be the father of his girlfriend's child as he was sterile . I don't think the Dr explained how he became sterile.
Liz, this episode was jam-packed with unfortunate events. "I can’t imagine opening a box that looked like a jewelry box and getting a toothbrush." That was a clunky move if you ask me. "Meche looked unhappy for a moment but money won out." You can say that again.
Maggie, thanks. This is all I know about the boat. It was Fabián's main boat and it sounded like it could have been out with the nets set because they mentioned having lost all the fish when the engine exploded. That explosion was courtesy of Porfirio at Sergio's request.. It didn't sound like anyone was on the boat.
Kat, your canning experiment seems like quite a chore but accomplishment. It is always fun trying new things.
Brisa and the death certificate: being the sadist she is, she had to have some kind of an excuse to see Víctor arrested.
I'm still watching. Still finding it weird but intriguing... who would marry the woman they thought killed their daughter for revenge? I'm going to marry you in order to make your life miserable - I've heard some questionable rationales before but the difficulty rating on those mental gymnastics has got to be off the charts!!! I don't know HOW you arrive at that justification!! I might change my mind as the story drags on but for the moment I'm actually amused by this nonsense.
Sis on the other hand is less endearing, the way she heartlessly shoved that poor man in front of the train after he was a good little boy and lied about Alba putting him up on his crimes, was just plain gruesome.... yuck!
I'm an episode behind you Darcy but I agree that the forced marriage is farcickle. Now if Gus was so traumatized and the only one that could calm him was Alba, there would be some justification, albeit 18th or 19th century thinking. I'll try to catch up with it over the weekend. I keep waking up around 4 a.m lately so I'm not making it to the 10 p.m. show like I used to.
Liz, ITA. Atilla needs to continue to put Reha in his place. He cowered and apologized for his tactless remarks at the dinner. And I also enjoyed his taking his frustration out by hitting that heavy bag. I'm also enjoying his putting Lale in her place when she tries to make nice. Her telling Reha about Atilla's family ruined his relationship with Karsu.
Atilla told, IIRC, Cedvet that he's sure Karsu will never forgive him, agreeing with Cedvet's assessment. I hope that's not true, but dizis are not as prone to happy endings as TNs.
Wrote a long comment and lost it . I am to tired to reconstruct it, so I will just say that I have learned to suspend my disbelief. I love seeing Fernando and all these familiar faces . Love seeing Daniel and Fernando in scenes together .
Susan
There was a similar situation in the novela La Mentira, thought the husband didn't explain his revenge motive to the woman he courted and married.
TRIVIA: I wondered where the name Iker came from. it is of Basque origin and is popular in Spain. It means "visitor".
No Surprises for Estrella
Estrella accepts the financial help from Sergio. She will keep fishing and will pay him back. He tells her that isn't necessary but she says that for her it is. She wants to first tell Fabián what she had decided before Sergio comes to make the financial arrangements.
First, Meche stops by Fabián's saying that she knows that Estrella talked to with Gonzalo and that she found out what a hard time they were having economically. Estrella has found another way to return the money to Fabián who wonders if that means that Sergio is going to pay him. Meche isn't talking.
Fabián is angry with his father for talking to Estrella about the money. Gonzalo makes it clear that SHE came to see him and he was honest. She, also, had overheard them at the union office.
Sergio arrives at Fabián's before Estrella does and is ready to get Fabián's bank info so he can transfer the money into his account. Sergio doesn't know why Fabián is so upset. Does he think that Estrella is going to move away with him? Estrella FINALLY arrives and Fabián asks if this is what she wants to do. It is hard for him to believe because they had a plan of their own. She says it is what she wants to do because it is the best for everyone. She will see him later. The fund transfer is made.
Back at Estrella's, Sergio tells her that he didn't give Estrella the money just for Azul's well being but that he also did it for her. She and Azul can move to Mexico City if they want.He is starting to fall in love with her all over again. She tells him she will make all decisions for herself and Azul. He gets uncomfortably close and almost kisses her but she conveniently pushes him away when Azul and Meche appear. (Estrella needs to react quicker)
Meche tells Sergio that she hopes she won't end up being sorry they ever took the money from him.
Azul wants her father to stay for dinner.
Yazmín Finds No Peace
Fabián ends up physically removing Javier from his house. Yazmín is upset because just when she was getting over her break-up with Javier is when he reappeared. Now she has started feeing sad and angry al over again. Her father tells her that is how life is. He comforts her and she decides to be alone in her room.
Later, she shows up at the restaurant where Oliver happens to be. He offers a ride at sea to lift he spirits. She agrees to go with him but true to form he starts to put the moves on her. They kiss. She tells him it isn't going to work for all of the reasons she already told him. She needs a break from relationships right now. He agrees but then jokes about how wonderful his kisses are and how she'll be back for another. She is not amused and asks if that is all he thinks about. He says no, he doesn't. He is her good friend. Smiling again, she decides it is time to go back in to shore. He discovers that he has run out of gasoline and whoopsie . . . he didn't pack the radio. They are adrift at sea.
The Truth Confronts Pascual
Pascual tells Perla about his grand plan to include Valentín whenever they go out. That way neither Valentín or she will miss out on being with him. Perla cannot believe what she is hearing and tells him his silly idea will never work. She and he are just getting to know each other. They need couple time. She wants to fall in love with him.
Later Pascual is upset with Valentín looking at photos of his novia Perla on his phone. What is with that? Valentín answers with his usual double talk. Pascual is suspicious.
Pascual's suspicions gain a life of their own when Brisa drops the fact that her sister's impossible love was Valentín. He confronts Perla about what her sister said. She admits that Valentín was a part of her past but she is with him Pascual now. He really cannot deal with her being in love with his best friend. It is as if she were in love with his brother. She apologizes and makes it clear that she would never go out with him to make Valentín jealous. She says that the best decision that she has made in along time was deciding to give their relationship a second chance. Pascual makes her feel loved, safe and happy. Pascual is still confused by the whole deal. She leaves the decision to break up or not up to him. He drops her hands that he had been holding and fingers his crucifix.
Perla confronts Brisa for having let Pascual know that Valentín was her "impossible love." Brisa doesn't think it was that big of a deal.
Gabriel Comes Clean
A reinvigorated sadistic Brisa has a new scheme and stops by to tell Gabriel that she just "happened" to be at the Records Registry when she saw them arresting Víctor for falsifying documents. What could even be worse for Gabriel is that Víctor recognized her and might hold that against him, too. When Víctor is done talking, Gabriel will end up in jail and Iker in an orphanage. As Gabriel gets more and more upset, she says he only has one choice: to run away with Iker and she can come with them!!!!
After Brisa leaves, Marina appears and seeing the state that Gabriel is in, she insists that he tells her the whole truth already. He finally tells her about having kept Iker when he couldn't locate his parents. He had himself put down as Iker's father and made up a name for his mother. She asks why he never told Iker the truth. Gabriel says he was so young he didn't know how he could explain something like that. He is seriously thinking about taking Iker and running away, far away. He wants Marina to come with them. Marina cannot see being in a state of constant flight as a viable option. She thinks he should go and turn himself in and fight for Iker in court. He acted out of love caring for Iker. Gabriel says that people like him can't afford lawyers and he would end up losing with Iker stuck in an orphanage. She admits that fighting in court will not be easy but she will be by his side if that is what he decides to do. If he decides to run, he will be on his own.
Jarifa, thank you for your superb recap, masterfully recounted.
Iker is a beautiful name, I appreciate you explaining its origin.
"Estrella needs to react quicker" is absolutely right! She loves Fabian and doesn't seem at all tempted by smooth talkin' Sergio yet she hesitates to reject him. Kick him to the curb. I must say though that I continue to be fascinated by the ever changing subtle color and height of Sergio's hair. His noticeably darker and shorter cut tonight is becoming I admit begrudingly. :)
"A reinvigorated sadistic Brisa" is exactly that, tinged with a touch of madness. Trying to convince Gabriel to run away and she will go with them? Now there's a plan. Not. Cornered Gabriel finally tells Marina the truth. Hopefully she will be able to persuade him to stay and fight for Iker, although that it going to be a long, hard road.
Although it was cruel of Brisa to reveal Valentin is Perla's impossible love, something had to happen to move this "love triangle" along. If seeing Perla on Valentin's phone didn't immediately enlighten Pascual, he obviously needed to have the truth told directly to his face. Perla may (somewhat) want to fall in love with him, but surely she knows that is never going to happen.
Oliver is consistent and persistent. If only he'd focused a bit more on securing necessary provisions for the boat rather than lavishing moondogie devotion to an unimpressed Yaz, they wouldn't be adrift and in peril.
Jarifa, another excellent summary; thank you!
Diana
This episode had everything! I loved Denis in his dance duds with the red bow tie! Watching him show all of this to Atilla was a great scene.
The whole family was supportive of the kids at the dance concert. Reha was almost likable in his pride. The boutonniere and wrist corsage were lovely, thoughtful contributions from Atilla, thoughtfully done privately. Atilla’s face continues to affect me deeply.
Hmmmm! I am now wondering if Hasan and Filiz have a future after their impactful meeting! It was fun to see Karsu and Mert enjoy the concert, but Atilla is still unable to explain himself because Karsu understandably rejects any effort.
But the biggest event was Filiz’s discovery. I wonder if Adnan wants younger women. He seemed to brush off Hande during her not very subtle overture. Either her place has been taken or because she isn’t young enough might be the reason. I wonder if he will continue to be the wise, benevolent rich man. More likely, things will get ugly. When will Irmak be told? Will she lose the baby? What effect will this have on Filiz, experiencing this betrayal twice?
Babachita
That Adnan is as bad as Reha. He just has a more gentlemanly manner than he does. We’ve already seen how self-absorbed he is when he thoughtlessly calls Irmak the love of his life right in front of Filiz. It would have been a shock to see him in bed with somebody else except they showed it in the avances the day before. You would think a rich guy like that would have an alarm system. Also, where is his mother? I thought she’d come to live with him.
Poor Filiz having to go into the house that was once her home! And then the sight of him in bed with some young thing – cheating again, and this time on Irmak. Everything happens to Filiz. She just can’t catch a break.
I was surprised that a single woman would go to a club alone, and that once she was there nobody bothered her and she seemed quite comfortable. Well, until Atilla showed up. Watching that scene made me uncomfortable. And it also must have been hard for Atilla to see her all pals-y with his brother. Though she doesn’t know that’s his brother.
You would think Lale would want to live in her own apartment. It was really nice. Now she’s stuck in this little place with no view, unless you count the view of Karsu and family.
Adnan!!!! Well my initial reaction to him was justified. I bet he married Feliz so he has access to her impressionable young daughters. Initially I thought Feliz was still in flashback mode and the shadowy figures in the bed were Adnan and Irmak. Then I thought Hande showed up, but since the woman needed to be told who Feliz was....I didn't get the feeling it was a young woman in bed with him, but it was dark. So now do we hope for a miscarriage so Irmak also can move on with her life? I think Adnan told Irmak his mother was out of town also when he was supposed to be going to the other town that starts with an A.
I think Cevdet may have blown his cover. Karsu saw him out of the corner of her eye leaving Atila's place and his helmet was off. He then put it in so maybe she didn't see enough of him to make the connection.
I also wonder if Hasan has a future with Feliz. When they both were heading to the bookstore I figured they would meet there. The crushed tree branches were a different twist.
I wonder if these Turkish shows ever get dubbed in English. If not, they should be. They are really good!
I smiled through the first half and laughed out loud when Felix lit into Hassan. Everyone was so proud and happy during the recital and I loved Denis showing Atilla his clothes and then Attila giving him and his little girlfriend the flowers. I was happy to see Karsu enjoying herself at Merk’s performance. Then total shock that Adnan had a young woman in his bed. I thought he was decent, in spite of running off with his stepdaughter! Now Feliz is in a tough place, how to tell Irmak what she saw.
This should get really interesting with Lale’s mother coming and Adnan probably trying to explain himself. But really, what explanation can he give. He’s a cereal cheater.
Liz
In all the excitement, I had forgotten about Cevdet! Kat, I think Karsu did recognize him, or at least saw enough to start thinking!
Maggie, I agree it seemed odd that Karsu could just show up unaccompanied, but Istanbul seems to be more tolerant than some parts of the Middle East. Once she was with Mert, she was probably protected. I enjoyed seeing her happy face. She has been under such a strain throughout the dizi so far. If anyone is watching Bahar on Telemundo, there is another example of a woman letting loose in a different way right now. Both Karsu and Bahar look thrilled with their glimpses of freedom.
The Turkish stories are excellent, I agree, Kat!
Remember way back when we thought Adnan and Irmak was the real love story of this dizi? Now it looks like Adnan has always been in love with himself! I’m sad because I liked that illusion.
OT. Liz, “cereal cheater” made me laugh as it reminded me of my brothers and I trying to get the little prize in the cereal box. I’m sure each of us “cheated” in that game!
Babachita
Thanks Jarifa, a great recap of a pretty busy episode. I was sure Estrella told Sergio she wanted to go alone to tell Fabian about the money. So she should be mad at him for showing up at Fabian’s. But then I thought she was going to let him kiss her. She should have never let him get so close. And Azul is clueless about how her mother and grandfather feel. I should feel sorry for her but she just makes me mad. I feel she knows she’s making them uncomfortable by forcing Sergio on them.
Brisa is one of those people that speaks before they think. Why would she have thought Pascual knew Valentin was Brisa’s secret crush. And I was really surprised when she encouraged Gabriel to run away and said she’d go to. Why would she think he would take her along? I guess this was part of her grand plan. I hope Gabriel learns she was the one that turned him in. And thank goodness Gabriel set her straight on the fact he wasn’t interested in her.
I’m glad Gabriel finally told Marina the truth. And she had a sensible response. But she never connected the dots in a motherless infant and herself. I hope I’m right in my thoughts on Iker and Marina! Telenovelas are ususally full of coincidences!
I guess tonight’s episode will be a search for the boat with the missing kids.
Liz
Babachita, too funny with the cereal cheater. Your comment reminded me of good memories of prizes not only in cereal boxes but crackerjack too. And it seemed my mom would get stuff in detergent boxes!
Liz
Babchita and Kat – It hadn’t occurred to me that Adnan has a thing for young women. That woman in his bed sure looked young. And Kat, your idea that Adnan married Filiz to get access to her young daughters – just ew. They would have been quite young when he married her. I bet you’re both on to something. And Babachita, your idea that Kande is no longer young enough for him! Again, ew. If Kande knew that, she too would probably start getting facials.
I hadn’t remembered that Karsu caught a glimpse of Cedvet as a courier!
OT – Babachita, I tuned into Bahar last night. It was episode three, so I didn’t know what had happened before though I think I could piece some things together.
Maggie I'll put up some points from the first 2 episodes to help you out on the Telemundo page. Since nobody is officially recapping it I'm using English subtitles so I catch it all, especially early on.I imagine you may be able to watch them on the Telemundo app.
Maggie, if you can find the episodes (Telemundo app?), it might be worth watching. Basically, Bahar has a medical degree but has stayed home caring for spoiled family. She needed a liver transplant, but selfish husband was not inclined to do it, to the horror of their kids. His awful mother is adamant that he not do it. They found a donor in the nick of time. She is now teaching them a lesson.
Check out the TM caray site. The Bahar commentators (commenters?) are a growing group!
Babachita
Diana and Liz, I think we all share the same concern with Estrella allowing Sergio to get way too close to her. Is this going to end up with the same old same old telenovela trope where usually the leading man gets kissed, mysteriously by not putting up enough of a fight, by the female villain vying for his attentions and the leading lady sees them which results in a fight or a break up? The excuse is usually is he didn't see it coming, it all happened so fast, etc. but it never looks that way. There is always a way to keep somebody away from your lips. Are they going to try to pull that one on in reverse? Hope not.
Liz, " I hope I’m right in my thoughts on Iker and Marina! Telenovelas are usually full of coincidences!" Iker deserves a happy ending. As for the rest of them . . .
LOL
Diana, "Oliver is consistent and persistent. If only he'd focused a bit more on securing necessary provisions for the boat rather than lavishing moondogie devotion to an unimpressed Yaz, they wouldn't be adrift and in peril." Perfect! Loved the "moondogie". I am afraid there will be hell to pay for Oliver no matter how quickly the teenagers are found.
Adnan in bed with the youngster. The love of my current 15 minutes or however long I last. He is getting older, even though his loves aren't. I think the girl was from his office when Hande went to see him the first time. That girl was skinny, plain, blondish with really long straight hair. I'm pretty sure she was the who sat up in bed.
This must have been a bad fever dream.
Excellent comments today! I also loved everything about Deniz's performance. Either last night or before they showed Tilsim helping him with his dance moves, a step further in, hopefully, leaving the jealousy behind. BTW, I looked up Tilsim, and it means charm in Turkish. Like a lucky charm, or amulet, one wears. Deniz's performance was perfect and his joy at having everyone he loves there was clear.
I also loved the scene with his showing Atilla his new duds.
I was spared the preview of Adnan in bed with someone. I never watch those previews and have developed quicker reflexes by switching screens as soon as the current episode is over. I was frankly shocked. I was also surprised that Adnan and Irmak are living in the house in which they formerly all lived together. I thought that often shown scene where Irmak takes Adnan's hand and, IIRC, they are shown leaving together, meant Filiz stayed in that house, at least for a while.
I suspect Filiz will say nothing. Of course it would be the perfect revenge moment, but there's a risky pregnancy in the mix. She'll probably be warmer to her daughter from now on.
I've seen enough dizis that I was not surprised at Karsu being in the club alone. She was a bit reluctant, but I suspect that's her personality more than the culture in Istanbul. The shows I've seen portray independent women, driving cars all over the place.
What can Atilla even say to Karsu? Unless he reveals the whole mafia thing, there's no excuse for marrying someone else shortly after bedding a woman who's falling in love with you.
