Back from Ashland. My two faves were As You Like It and Quixote Nuevo. I was pleased to note that I got every slang term in Spanish that Octavio Solis threw into Quixote. There were also some palabroates. It's the famous don and Sancho Panza, but they're Mexican Americans.
I have caught up on Velvet, but nothing else. Boy that Carlos is one really bad dude. Rodrigo, you should have sworn an oath you'd leave NYC and never speak to Ana again.
Cristina is starting to turn to the dark side, especially when she hangs out with Barbie. I had the impression Alberto is ready to ask for a divorce, maybe tonight. But the lawyer seemed dubious considering the power of her father. But, if he were not a TN father, he would want his daughter out of a loveless marriage.
Have we seen the last of Luisa? She went to Puerto Rico once, but they never spent any money to show her performing there. Now she's going on tour with Ricky Brave.
Grrrr. It drives me nuts seeing Blanca softening toward E. [There's too many guys with an E at the front of their name. Can't remember Ponce's character's name. But he's conspiring with his sister to mess with Velvet.
It was a treat and probably a relief for the actor playing the role when Pedro finally woke up about Susan. And she owned up to everything and moved out! He looked like a whole new man, but he and Margara STILL can't admit what they feel for each other.
This was a sweet episode. And I didn’t fall asleep this time! Good job, Bahar, getting mother and daughter reunited. They looked so happy. And then persuading Rengin to see her father. And getting Timur to finally do something with his son. And leaving lots of bread for the seagulls. All very heartwarming!
I agree, this was a heartwarming episode. I was impressed that Bahar and Evren pulled off the mother-daughter reunion. Bahar seems to look for ways to fix things for people, not just to physically heal them. She goes out of her way, and in this episode we see the peace that can bring.
I am anticipating some jealousy on her part with Cagla and Evren, probably unexpected. She might just be realizing she has feelings beyond friendship for him.
I now have more compassion for Rengin, with the background view of her life as an unwed mother, shamed by her father. We also see Bahar being shamed by her father for getting pregnant out of wedlock. Both women had that in common, as well as Timur!!! Surely doctors would have knowledge of birth control. But, then there’d be no story!!!
It was funny watching MIL caught flirting!
Babachita
Babachita, I also feel for Rengin too. I'm thinking the girls are a similar age. Maybe 6 months apart. I wouldn't think Rengin left to have the baby when she had the fight with Timur so I think Parla is younger. I liked that Parla decided to go to the hospital in support of Rengin when she goes to see her Dad.
Perhaps Bahar's speciality should be general practice. She really is about the whole person. I would think surgery would be too hard on her given her age and transplant status. We see her trying to catch up on rest in the break room. I also noticed her plant was on the table in the break room, so that explains that. Good for the set crew keeping up with the props.
I'm thinking the cancer patients/ex con probably was a victim of domestic violence and that is why she killed her husband. I imagine she is just a 2 episode extra though so I doubt we will ever know for sure. That is the benefit of hospital dramas, a lot more characters to drive the medical side and give interest to the show. (This feels like a mix of Scrubs and the Good Doctor for those that have seen those shows in the US).
I was unnerved at the demise of Rodrigo, although it wasn't a surprise. I worry about Carlos and Ana. She seems to be thinking, but if Carlos realizes this, she’s in danger.
It looks like Isabel won’t make it to the end. If she’s the real widow of Benjamin, will Emilio or Alberto inherit Velvet?
Carlos is so creepy. It’s hard for me to see Danilo in this role, but I think he’s doing well at it.
Speaking of creepy, Cris and her dad are threatening.
I worry if Clara goes to Singapore what might happen to her so far away from friends and family.
Gloria being taken was very dramatic. I wonder if she will be rehabilitated.
Do folks just disappear like Jenny and Max? I keep expecting them to return and help Blanca. I worry that Luisa will be recognized with her new public exposure.
These last episodes with Pedro-Peter were the first in which I liked Peter.
Pedro-Margara, still meh.
Babachita
This dizi is based on the K-drama, Dr. Cha, and it retains some of that Korean flavor. Dr. Cha is currently available on Netflix.
Isabel asks to speak with Valeria about Albert, but she passes out before they can talk.
Emilio comes to the atelier and tells Ana the police want to talk to her.
The nurse is on the phone with Isa’s doctor. She took her meds and is resting in bed. Valeria is worried and thinks Isa should go to the hospital. Isa says no doc and no hospital. She wants to have that conversation with Valeria.
I don’t have much time left in this world, Isa tells Val, please grant me this wish. I know you love Alberto very much. Emilio told me you got along very well as kids. Val replies, that was a long time ago. Isa doesn’t believe it. That love is still there. Isa continues, soon I will be gone. My son is alone, Valeria. You’re family and you shouldn’t fight. You should protect and support each other.
Val doubts Albert’s love for her. Isa answers, don’t let your mother poison your mind. I know Gloria. She made mistakes, but they aren’t your mistakes. You can have a different life. You can be happy. Please promise me that when I die, you will stay close to Alberto and take care of him and let him take care of you. Val gets a text, looks concerned and excuses herself to leave without promising.
The cops wanted to speak with Ana about Rodrigo. Ana tells Emilio that Rod died of an overdose. The police saw that he had texted Ana before he died. Ana tells Emilio about Rod trying to convince her about Carlos’ affair with an employee. She adds that Carlos denied everything.
Emilio asks Ana if she believes Carlos. I have no reason to distrust him, she replies. Emilio wonders about Rod’s reasons for telling Ana. Ana is confused. Rod was a very good friend, but his last text said to stay away from Carlos. He wanted me all for himself. [remember, Carlos sent that last text to Ana.] Emilio thought Rod was a good guy, but the overdose….
Ana explains that Rod was depressed. He was recently fired but it’s something she doesn’t want to talk about. She would rather think about her good memories of him. Ana says there’s going to be a mass for Rod later and she’s going with Carlos. Emilio thinks Ana should put a little distance between herself and Carlos. [good idea.] Ana thinks this is Isabel’s influence on her Tio.
Emilio asks, do you love him [Carlos]? Ana replies, we get along and have things in common… Emilio interrupts—that’s not love. You’ve been together long enough to have those feelings. If not, it means something’s not right.
Glo is drunk and still drinking at a bar. Val meets up with her. Mom, what are you doing in Manhattan? Glo comments on the “old man and the murderer” getting married. Val asks, how did you find out? Glo answers that she still has loyal informers at Velvet, unlike her traitor daughter who tells her nothing. Val says she didn’t tell her because she knew the reaction.
Glo asks Val, do you call her mom, too? Val ignores that and says, Isabel is very sick. She’s dying. Glo says that’s all emotional blackmail. Isabel should have died over 20 years ago. Val asks, did you know she was in poor health while she was in jail? Glo says she didn’t. She found out recently from Cris. Glo orders another drink. [Why does the bartender keep serving someone who is obviously very drunk?]
Val doesn’t want Glo to drink. Glo says Val should worry more about Isa. That woman will trash the Marquez name when the press finds out… Val interrupts—I’ll stay with you, and we can have drinks together. Glo is thrilled. Val texts Enrique, I need your help.
There’s a goodbye gathering in the atelier to send Luisa off on her singing career. Lots of nice words from everyone. Luisa explains to Raul she’s going to be singing with Randy Brave. Luisa sings for the group. We get some flashbacks and a big, happy, group hug.
Mateo has hired someone to investigate what David is up to. It turns out that Mateo’s suspicions were correct. David is a scammer. It’s a “rug pull”. David is trying to attract as much funding as possible and will disappear with all the money.
Sofia shows up at Velvet. She’s with Alberto. Val offered her an internship. It depends on Albert’s approval, which he approves. Albert must go, so he asks Rick to show Sofia to Val’s office. He’s happy to do so. It gets flirty. He’s been looking for the best pinball places for her. He officially introduces himself, Rick Lopez from Texas. She’s Sofia Marquez from London.
Panicked, Susan rushes into Velvet looking for Pedro. She found the note and thinks Pedro kidnapped Peter. She speaks with Marga.
Mateo and crypto guy talk more details about how David’s scam works.
The doc has come to see Isabel. She’s feeling much better. Cris and Emilio enter the room. Isa asks Cris for a favor. I’d like to have dinner with my son tonight, alone. Cris replies, I thought we’d all have dinner together to celebrate the wedding. No, Isabel says, I’d like to be alone with my son if you don’t mind. Cris okays it but, oh, we know Cris minds. Cris leaves and Isa whispers to Emilio, I’m planning something naughty. I need your help. Don’t say no.
Rick and Sofi can’t find Val. Sofi tried calling her, but it goes straight to voicemail. Rick says his shift is almost over, they can go play pinball in Queens. And there’s a cool bar there, too. And the best Chinese food in the city [maybe in Flushing’s Chinatown?] Sofi accepts Rick’s invitation.
Val and Glo go home. Glo is happy to be back and heads right for the alcohol. She starts snarking about the newlyweds, honeymooning at the hospital. Val looks very sad. Glo pours a shot for Val—drink with me. Glo downs hers but Val doesn’t. What’s wrong? Why aren’t you drinking? Two men, in white scrubs appear from the other room. One is holding a straitjacket.
During the commercial break, the men get Glo in the jacket and into a wheelchair. Glo shouts, what are you doing, Valeria? This is the biggest mistake of your life. Isa and Emilio hear the commotion and come downstairs. Glo starts shouting at Isa, you will never take my place, hear me?! You’re dying and you don’t know how happy that makes me. You should have rotted in jail! Time is running out, tick, tock, tick, tock. [let’s hope that tick tock clock is for Glo.]
Val looks on, devastated. She shouts at her mom, be quiet! Glo shouts back, no! You’re making the biggest mistake of your life! I am your mother and you’re going to end up more alone than me! Glo starts to struggle. Glo begs Val to put and end to this. She calls Val a traitor. Never call me your mother again! You’re an orphan now! Glo is wheeled away, screaming and struggling.
Ana and Carlos go to Velvet after the mass. What the priest said, the attitude of the people attending, it was all very moving. No one could believe that Rod was an addict or had child porn on his computer. Carlos thinks that Rod knew how to hide his true self. [Everything Carlos says about Rod is a projection of himself.] Carlos is glad that Ana is now out of danger.
Ana isn’t pleased. She says, don’t talk about him [Rod] as if he was a problem that got fixed. He was my friend. Carlos replies, you can’t scold me for being glad that he won’t harass you anymore. Ana looks troubled and gives a big exhale. Carlos wants a hug. Ana can’t, she’s too sad. Carlos suggests they go out to a jazz bar. Ana isn’t receptive. Maybe a restaurant of her choice? Ana turns it down. She needs to speak with Emilio later. She tells Carlos she will see him tomorrow and gives him a kiss on the cheek [Why doesn’t Ana notice how creepy Carlos is?]
Not sure where Val and Enrique are. He asks, how did it go? Good, she replies tearily, they were very professional when they took her. I’ll never forget her face when she realized what was going on. Enrique tells her she had to protect Glo from the dangers of her drinking.
Enrique gathers Val in for a comforting hug. Val jumps up. You don’t want this! You’re a narcissist who only thinks of himself and money. I hate you, but I hate myself more for wanting to be with you. She leaps into his arms and sobs.
Pedro and Peter return home after a wonderful day at the amusement park. Susan and Marga are relieved. Pedro is offended that they though he kidnapped Peter. He just wanted to enjoy their last day together. Susan is angry that Pedro didn’t answer any of the calls she left… 30 missed calls… 22 texts. His phone was on silent. Time to say goodbye. Peter gives Pedro a big hug, goodbye daddy. Susan tears the boy away and they leave.
Mateo tries to explain David’s scam to Clara. Clara doesn’t believe him. It’s just a ruse to get her to stay. David warned her that Mateo would try this. He tells her he had a crypto investor investigating David. Clara is upset. Enough! I didn’t expect this from you. She leaves.
Marga tries to cheer up Pedro. Let’s go out for a drink. He’s not up for it. You’re not the only one who is losing someone, she says, my sister is going to Singapore. So, let’s go to the bar. Luisa is singing tonight. She convinces him by staring at him until he says yes. They laugh.
Ana arrives home and sees the dinner table is set for 4. She thought they were going out for dinner. Emilio says this was Isa’s idea. He was against it, but he couldn’t say no to her. Especially now since they are married. Against what, Ana asks, why are there 4 place settings?
Isa enters the apartment. She’s wearing the Garza dress Ana gave her. Ana wants to know what’s going on with all the mystery. Albert enters the apartment and immediately becomes fixated on Ana. She returns the same look to him. Isa says, don’t blame Emilio, I wanted the 4 of us to eat together like the family we somehow are. Albert notes Isa’s dress and Isa outs Ana as Carmen Garza.
Isa offers a toast. [should she be drinking alcohol?] Here’s to the truth, even when it’s revealed by a bigmouth like me. To your [Ana’s] talent and to life giving us the opportunity to reunite with the people we love the most [looking at Albert]. And [looking at Emilio] above all, to love, which can overcome anything, and understand and forgive everything. Salud.
Albert likes the meal—chicken in almond sauce, Isa says, and it’s almost as good as what you find in Oaxaca. Who would have thought? Emilio says its from a place run by paisanos and he talks about tlayudas, coloraditos…and tamales. [one of the great things about living in or near a city like NY is the immense diversity of world cuisine.]
Albert thanks them for inviting him to dinner. Isa “complains” that she had to talk Emilio into it. He wanted her all to himself. She wanted to have the 3 people she loved the most. Emilio, the love of her life, Alberto, who she loves more than anything in the world, and Ana, who she loves like a daughter. Ana says, we love you, too.
Isa isn’t done. I want to see you two happy [Ana and Albert]. You don’t know how good I felt when I realized that you two are in love. Even more so now because I know that you are destined to be together. Ana tries to interrupt but Isa asks to finish.
Isa continues, I know you’re with other people and have made commitments you think you can’t break. But you’re wrong. No commitment is larger than the one we have to ourselves… to our feelings, to the people we really love. Don’t be stubborn and resolve whatever needs to be resolved. Don’t turn your back on love because love isn’t so easily found. Alberto, remember what you said when you married us? He remembers. True love can weather the worst of storms. Apply that to yourselves. Cross that ocean of problems and pull into port together. Life is too short.
Marga and Pedro are having fun dancing at the bar. Luisa is singing. Rick and Sofi are there, too. She notes that a lot of Velvet employees are there. Yes, Rick replies, we’re a big family at Velvet. We support each other. Sofi says she’s starting to like NYC.
Sofi gets a call from her dad. She lies and says she’s in Manhattan with her cousin. He reminds her not to drink, she’s considered a minor in NY, and they already got in trouble in London. [I wonder how old Sofi is.] She tells him not to worry and quickly ends the call. Back to the bar and Rick wants to see Sofi’s ID. She produces a fake that says she’s 22. He orders a double for her.
Carlos is meeting at a lounge with Samantha, who is in the fashion industry. There’s someone I want to tell you about, he says, someone who must be a part of your fashion house. Ana Velasquez. He shows her Ana’s sketches. Samantha is impressed.
Isa dances with Albert. She says this is the happiest day of her life. She will remember it as she takes her last breath. Albert adds that it will be in many, many years. She apologizes for not being by his side for all these years. Not your fault, Albert replies, I should apologize. If I’d known you were alive… Isa knows he would have searched for her. She talks about what their life could have been like in Oaxaca. Walking him to school, ice cream on the plaza. She would have taught him to sing and play the guitar. Albert says there’s still time to experience things together. She laughs, maybe to sing and play the guitar, but not to take you to school.
Marga talks to Sofi and introduces her to Pedro. He asks, are you going to be a salesperson at Velvet? Marga explains that Sofi is a Marquez. Sofi adds that she’s Esteban’s daughter. Rick proposes a toast to Sofi and to all the nice things to come. Uh oh, Blanca arrives at the bar. Blanca didn’t expect Sofi to be there. Sofi fibs and says that Marga invited her. Marga plays along. Blanca is suspicious.
Carlos continues to talk up Ana to Samantha. Samantha thinks Ana is talented. Carlos tells Sam, Ana is a rising star, the perfect person to revolutionize your brand. Sam replies, I’m about to close a deal with another person, and you know the kind of contract I need. Carlos says they can work around that. Sam isn’t interested. Carlos presses, with Ana, you’d have the northern European market assured. Sahgun has a foothold in that area. Forget the other candidate and choose Ana. I could help increase your sales in Denmark, The Netherlands, and Belgium. Your sales are lagging there, right?
Sam laughs. Quit blowing smoke, you don’t have that kind of power. Give me 24 hours, Carlos replies, I’ll have an answer for you. The only thing is that Ana must be your designer. He holds out his hand for a shake. She takes his hand and says, sometimes I forget that you’re the best negotiator I know. There’s a reason you’re Sara Sahgun’s right hand man.
Isabel starts feeling ill at dessert. She doesn’t want to leave, she wants this to last. Albert takes an envelope from his inside pocket and hands it to Emilio. It’s a wedding gift. Keys and photos. It’s a cabin in the Adirondacks. Visit whenever you want. Emilio thinks it’s too much. Nope, Albert says he will drive them up there tomorrow. If you like it, he says, stay for a week. Isa is thrilled.
Sofi pulls Rick aside and says she should leave. Blanca is her father’s friend and he’s very difficult. She suggests they should go someplace else. Rick notes it’s late and he offers to take her home. He asks, where do you live? She has a better question, where do you live? We could buy a bottle and go to your apartment. I was told Velvet employees have their own apartments. [whoa!] Rick is stunned. She grabs him and says let’s go. Blanca notices.
Albert and Ana talk after dinner. He asks her about Carmen Garza. Carmen is your mother’s name, right? What about the last name? She replies, it’s the closest thing to a crane that I could find. I didn’t want it to be too obvious. Sorry. I thought I was losing you and I felt an emptiness in my life that I needed to fill. I found shelter in Carmen Garza.
Albert asks, was that your way of punishing me? Designing for someone else under a pseudonym? Know what I think about you, Ana? You’re awesome. He flashes his gap-tooth smile at her. You haven’t stopped surprising me since the day we met. She apologizes again. I would have liked to hear it from you, he replies, but I’m not upset. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, Ana.
He’s about to move in for a kiss. Ana deflects and says she’s worried about Isabel. I think she should be admitted to the hospital. Albert says she doesn't want to go, and he understands. She’d rather be surrounded by the people she loves. She already told me what she shared with us tonight. She’s right, Ana. You are the love of my life. I’m leaving Cristina.
No, Ana replies, you’re married, and I decided to move on with my life. Albert notes it’s with a man that Ana doesn’t love. Or have you fallen in love? Ana, no matter what happens, I will never stop loving you. You can reject me, scorn me, and hide under a thousand pseudonyms, but I will always love you just the same. I will soon be a free man, and I will fight for you.
Ana sighs, don’t you realize what your promises do to me? I don’t want to get my hopes up again about something that won’t happen. He places a hand on her face. Remember when we hid on the terrace, Albert says, and I gave you the first crane I ever made? You were scared but I took your hand, and you trusted me. He takes her hand now. He asks, do it again, Ana. Go back to being that girl and trust me again.
They kiss and we are out!
Great recap, dondi, especially your description of Gloria’s dramatic exit. I apologize for jumping the gun with comments. I’m used to doing that with the non-recapped dizis.
Babachita
Novelera, I'm delighted to see that you're back, and that you had a terrific time at Ashland. Quixote Nuevo sounds fascinating. Needless to say, I'm also very glad that you managed to keep up with Velvet while you were away!
Babachita, you've raised some very interesting points. I too am worried about Ana's continuing relationship with Carlos. It seems clear to me that something seemingly perilous will happen to her, but I'm almost 100% sure that she'll manage to survive and go off happily ever after with Alberto.
Alas, I too fear that Isabel won't survive to the end of the novela. Interesting question you raise about who inherits her money. My guess is that it will be Emilio, but that's just a guess. Proving that Alberto is her son might be too complicated.
As for Gloria, I dislike her so much that I hope she will NOT be rehabilitated.
Dondi – you say this has a Korean flavor. I’ve never seen a Korean novela. What is that flavor? Is it the sweetness?
Dondi, you've done it again! Another fantastic recap. Indeed, this one almost makes me wish I hadn't bothered watching the show, since you've described it so fully, and without commercials. :-)
Speaking of commercials, I enjoyed your saying that "during the commercial break, the men get Glo in the jacket and into a wheelchair." I guess the commercials are good for something.
You ask why Ana doesn't notice how creepy Carlos is. Frankly, all she sees of him is his seeming concern for her and his smiling face. It's only when she's not looking or when he has turned away that we see his very weird expressions. I think that for quite a while, those inappropriate expressions were the only warning sign we on the patio had. Except, of course, for Rodrigo's impassioned warnings, and Carlos found ways of dealing with those, alas. (I AM wondering whether the bizarre details of Rodrigo's death--the child porn found on his computer, his supposed drug addiction, etc., will raise Ana's suspicions. Which, of course, will endanger her.)
I was somewhat surprised at Val's suddenly accusing Enrique of being a narcissist who only thinks about himself and money. And just a few seconds later, she leaps back into his arms. Huh? And didn't her accusation happen AFTER she had called him for help in getting Gloria back into a rehab center?
I'm hoping what Mateo tells Clara about David hiring a crypto investor investigating David will ultimately disuade Clara from taking David up on his offer. But I'm not all that confident that it will.
I don't think of myself as a prude, but Sofia seems to me to be moving too fast with Rick. I wasn't all that surprised to see that she had a phony ID ready, but her inviting herself to go back to his place and continue drinking troubled me. I hope he has condoms.
I might mention that not only did Alberto give Isa and Emilio a rather nice looking vacation house as a wedding present, he also arranged with HR for Emilio to have the week off.
I was surprised when you mentioned Alberto's "gap-tooth smile." I never noticed that.
Al's gap teeth have bothered me, he is an unappealing galan to me, but I usually don't comment too much on the actors looks as that's the way they were born, I assume. His lisp is more distracting to me. Is that his dialect from where he was born and raised? I looked up the actress playing Sofia. IRL she is 24. Not sure if she is wearing a wig, but I'm not a fan of her hairdo, it does not suit her facial features at all. She is another I should take Thumper's moms advice about ( or was it actually his dad that said it? I'll have to rewatch Bambi) If you can't say say anything nice, don't say anything at all....(I think he actually said nothing but that makes it a double negative).
I agree about to many E actors. (In Fatmagül I'm getting all the M characters confused.)
Thanks dondi. We can always count on you getting everything! When the crypto guy was on i switched to English CC's so I could understand, sorta, what they were talking about. I'm a die hard anti crypto person and feel it's gambling or a ponzi scheme. We will never invest in it.
Kat, count me in as another anti-crypto person. As soon as I heard that that's what David was pushing, I knew he couldn't be up to anything good. His aunts are likely to learn that the hard way.
Juanita, I did not watch TNs in Oregon! I got back on Monday, the 28th. Mondays are always travel days for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival because the theaters are always dark that day. I binged two episodes a night of Velvet this week so as to get up to speed on Caray.
Dondi, your recap was superb, as always. And I'm ITA on all your asides. Valeria is an interesting character. I feel sure she'll follow Isabel's advice and become closer to Alberto. She seems to me to have suffered some warped attitudes from a lifetime of being mothered by Gloria. I remember when they showed her as a child, sticking out her tongue at Alberto as he whisked Ana up to that rooftop.
Emilio seems to finally be sensing something off about Carlos. He's been his biggest cheerleader up until now because he wants Ana to forget Alberto.
I had to pause the recording and look up what was in the Spanish subtitles: tirón de alfombra (rug pull) and then to further look up that term for financial malfeasance, i.e., pulling the rug out from under the victim.
I'm not expecting Gloria to reform when (and if) she dries out. A person who sends a hitman after their rival is unlikely to warrant a happy ending.
Dondi, excellent observation about Carlos projecting his worst instincts onto Rodrigo.
At least Valeria sees Enrique for what he is. Narcissist was the perfect description, along with spoiled rich kid. I hope she tires of him.
Speaking of tiring of people, I'm definitely tired of Clara. I can't tell if it's the actor or the role written for her. But even when she's happy with Mateo, she doesn't do a thing for me.
Was the Isabel character terminally ill in the earlier version? Itati is doing such a great job in the role that I hate that it's written that way.
It seems Ms. Sofi has been a wild child in London as well. I'm surprised that the self-centered Esteban cares that much what she does. And, ew, Blanca is already assuming a mothering role with the girl. I'm hoping Max will return.
Maybe in Spain the actors aren't so big on veneers on their teeth. I've, of course, noticed his teeth. He also uses the Spanish second person plural verb form a lot, which Mexico does not.
Thanks, everyone. Oh my, I didn’t mean to offend anyone with my comment about Albert’s (Yon’s) smile. Sorry, Yon. When he looks at Ana, I think his smile is rather charming. And you know he’s from Spain as soon as he opens his mouth (not a dental comment). I think Albert went to school in Spain and that explains his accent.
Babachita, no worries about commenting. I’m happy we’ve got a patio. ITA, “Pedro-Margara, still meh”. I’ll add Mateo-Clara to the meh list. I don’t think Clara will go to Singapore.
Juanita, you are correct that viewerville gets the privilege of seeing Creepy Carlos make psychotic faces. But his face and demeanor subtly change in front of Ana each time she “rejects” him. She hasn’t noticed that yet mostly because she doesn’t always look him in the eyes. More proof that she doesn’t love him. I think that Val is trying to resist Enrique. She knows he’s bad news, but she can’t shake the physical attraction. Resistance is futile.
Kat, I think you feel about Albert the way I felt about Ed in La Jefa. But I think Yon is a slightly better actor than Iván.
novelera, ITA, I think Sofi was probably a wild one in London. If Esteban wanted to keep his daughter out of trouble, NYC is not a good place for her. Maybe a convent school. How old is she supposed to be? For Rick’s sake, I hope she’s not jailbait. I also agree on Itatí, she’s great in this. That’s why I was hoping Albert would get a second opinion and Isa would get treatment rather than palliative care.
Glo is the kind of villain who shouldn’t be redeemed, if that’s what others are referring to. But it’s okay if she gets sober. Pick one: manicomio, prison or death for her.
Hi Maggie. Yes, it’s the sweetness, a bit of goofiness, and the naivete of some characters, mixed in between some very dramatic elements. Other things fit sort of seamlessly into Turk dizis. For example, the extreme importance of family, a hierarchical system (or patriarchy), and rules of etiquette.
My comment about Yon's teeth was just meant to be about the prevalence of actors in the U.S. changing their teeth, noses, breasts, etc., etc. I like the actor and enjoy the Spanish accent. The fact that he doesn't have movie star teeth just endears him to me.
This was a really interesting episode. We saw many facets of Timur. His sadness when he cries in Bahar’s arms about his failure as a father. His speech to her about how he wouldn’t be anything without her, how she’s such a comfort. And then his trying to kiss her and her turning away, and him wishing she would come to bed with him, but she refuses. Why is that? Is she mad about the kidney thing? Mostly she doesn’t seem antagonistic to him.
Before that, there was his speech to his son about how it’s wonderful to have a woman who supplies the comforts of home and hearth, but that man also needs excitement and romance. This is all very illuminating because it shows he actually loves Bahar, something I had wondered about before.
The whole Rengin story was very touching, the dying father’s forgiveness and embrace, her daughter’s defense of her, the horrible brother turning her away from the father’s funeral. And then both she and her daughter rejecting Timur.
I like in this story that the men cry freely, and also comfort one another.
Oh, and Cagla sure is a bad date. Here she is telling Evren that he’s afraid of commitment – and she barely knows him!
What I really like about this show is you almost like everyone when you get the full story. At this point, Selim seems like the worst of the bunch trying to steal Rengin's inheritance. Rengin mentioned her mother, Parla's grandmother at some point. I wonder if Mom left with Rengin. It sounds like Parla knew Grandma.
I don't understand Bahar continuing to reject Timur. Am I the only one that thinks she is driving him into the arms of another woman by not having sex with him? It's been over 3 years since they've shared a bed!
Timur is turning into his dad in the way he treats his son (And daughter) If anyone should know what it's like to be pushed into a field he doesn't want it would be him.
So Parla could be older than Umay. I was getting the pregnancies mixed up. She is likely younger than Asiz Uras though.
Ana and Albert admit their love for each other is still strong. Albert promises he will straighten things out. They kiss. Isabel and Emilio walk in. Isa says, tonight we are celebrating that love won out. Twofold. Isa puts on some music and the couples slow dance.
We teleport to the special terrace. The Velvet Ladies are celebrating there. Marga asks, how is it possible that the 4 of us have never been on this terrace together? Ana thanks her friends for coming to this last minute get together at this spot that’s very special to her. Ana proposes a toast to Luisa, who is leaving to fulfill her dreams.
Luisa says she doesn’t feel like she’s completely leaving. You guys will be in every song I sing. Clara raises her glass—To the Velvet Girls! To what we were, what we are, and what we will be. Ana notes that Luisa is strong and fought so much. She deserves this. The world deserves to hear your voice. Marga adds, don’t forget us when you’re famous. Clara takes a video to commemorate the celebration.
Rick wakes up with a hangover and I think that’s an article of Sofi’s clothing on his head. Yep, the rest of her clothes are on the floor. I see an empty bottle of booze, too. He looks at the time… no… gotta get to work. He turns over. That lump in the bed next to him? Oh, no… Sofia Marquez. Yes, that’s me, she answers, and I haven’t given you permission to leave the bed. He tells her he has to get to work. She suddenly remembers her father. He will kill her… and Rick, too.
Two-faced Cris comes to speak with Isabel. She notes that Isa looks good today. Isa replies, I woke up with so much energy. The meds must be working. Cris says, I know we didn’t start off well, but I want you to know that unlike Gloria, I am glad you are back. That’s why I’d like to give you something I know is very special to you. It’s the necklace that Ben gave Isa all those years ago.
Isa is touched and says, you shouldn’t have. Cris answers, I know. [what a b*tch.] And I know you need to spend more time with Alberto and enjoy his company. I can skip the Adirondack trip. Isa replies, no, don’t say that. You two also need to discuss your relationship, but later, when we return from the cabin. You’re not doing well.
Rick and Sofi get caught in a sort of walk of shame by Clara and Marga. Oh boy, and here comes Blanca. Sofi quickly thanks the girls for letting her crash with them. The girls play along. Blanca says, Sofia, I didn’t know you spent the night here. She answers, yes, I love the building, but I should get back to my father. [do you think Blanca buys it?]
Albert and Mateo talk about the pending divorce. Mateo asks, so you told him [lawyer] about you and Ana? Albert says yes and about Sara Sahgun, too. Mateo notes that Cris will use this. Albert says, Leonardo is certain that when I give her the divorce papers, the Oteguis will become my worst enemies and will do what they can to ruin my life. Mateo replies, it means they could end up with Velvet. Albert likens it to the story of David and Goliath.
Mateo asks, and you’re still going through with it? Albert replies, if it’s one thing my mother’s arrival taught me, it’s that time is sacred. I can’t waste it and not fight for what I love. My place is with Ana, and I will win her back no matter the cost.
Esteban is furious with Sofi. How could you spend the night away from home? You didn’t even let me know! You said you’d be with Valeria, and it turns out you were with seamstresses! Sofi answers, Blanca told you, right? She only wants what’s best for you, Esteban replies. Sofi accuses Blanca of meddling.
Esteban fires back, don’t talk to me like I’m stupid and don’t manipulate me. He asks, did you drink last night? She lies—no. Esteban says that Blanca saw her with a drink. Sofi claims it was a virgin mocktail. Dad mocks back—like the mocktails in Mayfair? Now you’re in Queens! I see they are keeping you well informed, Sofi replies. Esteban tells her he brought her to NY to help her. To protect her from her problems. Sofi turns the tables. I thought we came because of your financial problems. Esteban has no comeback for that one. Sofi leaves for Velvet.
Luisa gives Rick a CD of her songs and a CD player to thank him for being there for her. He is reluctant to accept. She calls him the best friend a girl could have. Play it loud so you’ll remember me, she says. She also warns him to be careful with Sofi. You just got here and she’s a Marquez. Employee-Boss relationships don’t work out well. I’ve seen it. They hug.
Raul is having another mini atelier crisis, a creative block. Ana calms him. Ana gets a call from “Saman White”. Raul knows Saman White. They are luxury boutiques. He tells her to answer and put it on speaker. “Hi, Ana, this is Samantha White, CEO of Saman White. I’m calling because we’re very interested in interviewing you for a designer position. Are you interested?” Ana breaks into a smile and Raul silently freaks out.
Ana is interested. Sam says the interview is tomorrow at Saman White corporate offices. End call. Raul exclaims—OMG! Saman White is a big deal. They just don’t call anybody. If they reached out, they must have investigated. It means the job is yours. The opportunity of a lifetime. Dear Anita, your career as a designer has just begun, and I will personally prepare you for the interview. Hug. [So nice that Raul is happy and supportive of her. He’s a wonderful guy.]
Thank goodness Clara is doing more research on crypto and David. She discovers a crypto scam involving a company called Rublos Beach. A rug pull. Enrique walks in. He knows all about that. Even Wall Street executives got suckered. You need to be careful in the crypto world, he tells her. Clara’s face falls. The elevator opens and Enrique introduces Clara to her replacement. Clara is stunned. Enrique asks Clara to show the newbie the ropes.
Marga and Pedro. [Place Babachita’s meh here.] He thanks her for getting him out of the house yesterday. He asks her if she has plans for the evening. She doesn’t. So they plan a “date” for 8p.
Esteban speaks with Blanca about Sofi. She’s had problems with drugs and alcohol. Next month she’ll be 21. [Phew. I was worried she was younger.] Clueless Blanca asks, how could she get into a Queen’s bar if they ask for ID? [duh!] Blanca offers to speak with Sofi. She has experience with daughters. [Remember when Jenny was bad?] Esteban is thankful. He gives Blanca a kiss. She pulls away—not here… He notes that no one is there to see, and the kisses commence. Of course, Sofi enters and catches them.
Sofi starts, so that’s why you introduced her as your friend. So later you could tell me she was your NY girlfriend. Or rather, your lover. Esteban asks for respect. Sofi answers, you’re asking for respect when I just caught you making out at work? No way. She turns to Blanca, just so you know, I don’t want you near my father and I don’t want you snooping in my life and telling him what I do.
Esteban calls Sofi out on her rudeness. I’m just being honest, she replies, and you know how I get when you pressure me. If you don’t want that to happen here, then leave me alone. Sofi walks away and Esteban apologizes to Blanca. He’ll fix it.
Emilio and Rick talk. Rick thinks Emilio has entered the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Emilio snarks, maybe I should ask Zoe to fill in for me as manager instead. Rick is sorry, this is important for him, and he thanks Emilio for the opportunity.
Clara has asked Mateo’s mom to come to Velvet. She wants to talk about Mateo and David’s relationship. Clara begins, I take it you’re aware I’m leaving with David. Emma snarks, oh, you exchanged Mateo for David, as if they were pairs of shoes? Clara says, don’t misunderstand. David offered to hire me as a financial assistant. Out of curiosity, are you familiar with the Rublos Beach case?
Emma quickly answers, my son is innocent. He got involved with some bad people. Clara replies, wow, it’s true. There was a scam, and he had to leave the country. Emma says that David was deceived. Mateo handled everything and told us his brother had nothing to do with it, and it would be better for him to go to Asia.
Clara asks, who’s paying for David’s hotel? Emma tells her David is paying. Clara says she feels like visiting Emily and giving her treats. Emma fesses up—I remember now, we are paying. David isn’t liquid right now. But soon he will get a big injection of capital. Emma asks, what does this have to do with Mateo and David’s relationship? Clara says it means everything. She thanks Emma for coming and takes off.
Carlos was in the neighborhood and thought he’d drop in on Ana. She shares her big news. I got a call from Samantha White. She’s looking for a designer. Carlos puts on his act. Are you serious? It’s spectacular. Congratulations! Ana tells him to hold up, it’s not a done deal yet. She asks if he knows her. Of course, he answers, she’s very famous and respected in the business world.
Ana wonders how Sam found out about her. Carlos says that Ana has made a name for herself. He thought something like this would happen. You deserve this, he tells her, this time your days at Velvet are really numbered. Ana’s enthusiasm diminishes with his statement.
Carlos is ready to celebrate. Ana says she doesn’t want to declare victory ahead of time. Carlos is certain she has the job. He pressures her to celebrate with him. Ana says she has to get back to work. Can we talk tonight? Carlos asks if something is wrong. No, she replies, but we’ll talk later. She gives him a kiss on the cheek and goes. Yes, viewerville gets another glimpse of Creepy Carlos.
Isabel shows the nurse childhood pictures of Albert. She tells him the only way she heard about her son was from Emilio’s phone calls and pics he sent. That’s why I’m begging you, I want to spend every second of my life with my son. Please let me go. The nurse understands, but he has strict orders from the doctor. Isa says, if you call him, he won’t authorize the trip. Tell him I kept it from you. Call him after we get to the mountains. If my son finds out about the doc’s orders, he’ll cancel the trip.
The nurse objects, but it’s your life. You know I don’t have much time left, Isa answers. I don’t want to spend my final days in a hospital. I’m begging you. I want to see the sunrise from the mountains, next to my husband, Emilio. Will you help me? We don’t hear an answer.
Valeria comes to Albert’s office. He tells her to sit, not in front of the desk, but behind it, in his chair. I know you wanted to sit there for a long time, he says. She’s curious, what kind of game is this? No game, he replies, this is your company, too. It’s time to prove you can lead it, too. He tells her about the trip. Someone is filling in to manage the store, but I need someone to fill in as president.
Val smiles—me? Albert is sure she’ll be great. He says, I trust you completely. Val’s smile fades. I can’t accept, she says. After checking my mother into rehab, I organized her things. I found something that belongs to you. It’s an envelope that Val hands over to Albert. If after reading this, you still want me to run Velvet in your absence, I will. What is this, Albert asks. Val replies, a letter Dad wrote before… you know…
We get the flashback and Ben’s voice over as he writes: I was wrong to deny you a chance at love. Like you, I was once in love. I loved deeply, with my heart in my hand. And I lost. My life has been a string of losses. I lied to you son. Your mother is alive, she didn’t die. She’s serving time for a crime she committed in Mexico. It’s your choice whether to see her.” Albert is devastated. Gloria told me that Dad hadn’t left a note, he says, how could she keep something like that from me? [I take it as a rhetorical question.] I’ll never forgive her for this.
Val says she doesn’t know. There’s a lot her mother told her that she doesn’t understand. She should have told Albert sooner. She asks forgiveness. Albert answers, you have no fault. I want you to stay at Velvet. Val gets up and gives Albert a hug. I’m sorry, Alberto, sorry about everything. They cry together. Albert says he’s sorry, too. He thanks Val.
Clara is with David at the hotel bar. She asks, tell me more about what happened. Not much to tell, David replies, what happened with Rublos isn’t what people imagine. I was a victim of those people I partnered with. He swears his innocence. I didn’t have anyone to support me at the time, he says. Clara asks, not even your brother? David claims that Mateo was the first one to turn his back on him and as always, he overcame it on his own.
Wow, Clara wonders, so your family never supported you? Your mom? Your aunts? David says he never liked to involve them in his business. She asks, not even this one with the crypto? He says no. She asks, so they’re not paying for you at this hotel? David smiles nervously, how do you know that?
Clara answers that with a bofetada! You’ve lied to me three times in less than five minutes! If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s being lied to! David wants to explain. She doesn’t want to hear it. Save the explanations for your investors because I’m uploading a video to social media calling you out as a scammer. David tries to smooth things over. He’s offered her a partnership! She’ll be rich, make millions! She slaps him again and tells him, I’m not a thief like you. Never speak to me again! Exit Clara.
Marga tells Luisa she’s going out with Pedro tonight. It’s practically a date [practically?] Luisa says her prayers were answered. I see you two becoming a couple. Marga doesn’t want rumors to start. Blah, blah, blah. [recapper prerogative, FF>> You can discuss this if you like.]
Ana meets Albert on the special terrace. He texted her to come and he’s happy she came. There are some things he can only tell her. She asks if it’s about Isabel. He says that Isa is okay. This is about his father. He gives Ana the letter. He says, Val gave it to me. Gloria was hiding it from me. My father wrote it to me before he died. Ana is sorry. He should have had this letter from the beginning.
Albert notes, it’s another thing that Gloria took from me. My father was thinking of me in his last moments. Ana answers, that means he loved you very much. Albert regrets not being there for his father when he needed him most. He wanted me to be president because he was so desperate. He needed my help but… I couldn’t see it. He was thinking of me and what I wanted. Albert concludes, my father killed himself because of me. No, Ana replies, don’t say that. You’re not at fault for your father’s decision. They make out on the bench. The theme song plays.
Cris enters Albert’s office and begins to snoop. He catches her. What are you doing? She innocently says, I was checking if we needed anything for our trip. I’d like to get insect repellent. There are probably a lot of bugs there. [How about rat traps for Cristina and Barbie?]
Albert tells her if she’s uncomfortable, she doesn’t need to go. Oh, no, Cris replies, you know I’d go anywhere that you asked. [Ask her to go to hell.] She asks, are you okay? He replies, things have happened that we need to discuss. She wonders--like what? He says they can discuss it after the trip. Right now, he wants to focus on Isa’s health. She says she also has things to discuss but they can wait until after, too. She goes.
Clara apologizes to Mateo for not believing him. She says she did some investigating. She found out he took care of David’s debt with the Rublos Beach scam. Mateo tells her never to bring it up to his mom and aunts. Clara knows that they think David is innocent because Mateo kept the truth from them. Why? Mateo says that David’s supposed successes made them happy, he didn’t have the heart to ruin that. Clara gives Mateo a kiss and says, there’s nothing sexier than a man like you with a good heart. More kisses.
Small minds conspire again. Cris tells Barbie that pregnancy suits her. She looks prettier every day. [Barbie still doesn’t look pregnant at all.] Barbie says, I thought you’d be in a bad mood about going to the cabin. It’s so boring. Cris says it’s only a week. Barbie notes that the murderer will be there, too. Cris laughs, that poor woman can barely stand. Don’t worry.
Anyway, Cris is there to propose something that will suit them both. I want us to start working at Velvet. Barbie is horrified. How many drinks did you have before you got here? You must be drunk to propose this. Cris laughs, this is my first glass. I’m sober.
Barbie recaps, you’re proposing that we get up early like common employees? Cris admits that would be awful, but, they would be keeping an eye on their husbands. You can’t say you trust Valeria. Wouldn’t you like to make her life miserable every day? Barbie answers, now you have my full attention. Cris says, we just have to come up with important positions for ourselves at Velvet and I’ll get my father to provide the money for our area. Barbie’s in, she wants her name tag in gold.
Albert clasps “the” necklace on Isabel. He says it looks spectacular. She loves hearing that and he loves saying it. He tells her she’s going to love the cabin. My father took us there years ago for Christmas. It’s a beautiful place full of tall trees. At night the sky is full of stars.
Isabel sits, I don’t think she’s feeling well. It’s like she senses something. She asks Albert to sit next to her. She says, know what I feel like doing? Eating that delicious sweet that people make over the campfire. What are they called? S’mores, Albert replies, I make them the best. [In his accent it’s “es’mores”. I love it.] Marshmallow and chocolate and whatever else you want.
Isa asks, are there birds there? Albert nods, every shape and color you can picture. Eagles and hawks, too. And further away there’s a lake full of ducks and herons. She wants to know, how are the sunsets? He says they’re spectacular and the sunrises even more so.
Isa rests her head on Albert’s shoulder. He looks at her, maybe he’s sensing something too. Tell me more, she says. He continues, when the sun hides behind the mountains, the sky becomes this intense red. Isa interjects, and then the birds come to squawk and sing. He says, like the plaza in Oaxaca. She whispers… yes… I can see the sky. It’s red. And I can hear the birds singing. A tear falls from her eye.
Albert tells her, soon you will see them for yourself. When my father took us, everything was covered in snow. The landscape was magical. Isabel’s eyes turn glassy. She exhales and her head slides slightly down Albert’s shoulder.
Mama? Without moving Isabel, he caresses her cheek. Mama? He slowly moves to enclose her in his arms. A heavy sigh. His tears fall.
I think Isabel is gone.
And we are out.
I also thought the scene with Alberto and his mom showed her passing away. It was beautifully done.
Now Alberto has some of the missing information, thanks to Val. I like how their relationship has become a supportive one. It feels like Val will end up running Velvet.
I am suspicious about Carlos always, so I wonder if he set up the Saman White thing. He wants Ana away from Velvet and Alberto. If Ana continues to try to slow things down with Carlos, she will be in danger. Would she be more vulnerable at Saman White?
The situation with Esteban and Sofi still feels off. Sofi apparently had problems with alcohol in London. Now she is involved with Rick. Blanca has always seemed perceptive, so I wonder why she is so quickly in Esteban’s control. We need Max!!!
I was glad Mateo and Clara are going after David and hope the aunts didn’t lose too much. It was funny that mom readily coughed up the info when Clara threatened to visit the doggy!
The lovely scene with Alberto and his mom is my favorite from this episode. Very well done
Babachita
I continue to enjoy this story! Very interesting about the Korean connection. These characters are not good or bad but are more like real life. They may get to grow (or not) as the story unfolds. The situation of Rengin-Timur-Bahar is much more complicated than a typical triangle. The attitude of both fathers was probably typical, but it left the daughters and their children very wounded.
The funeral scene was awful. What mean, spiteful relatives Rengin has. It is surely about money, of course. No wonder she seems such a hard person. She has had a hard life but also is a survivor. What a blessing she had the reunion with her father and daughter.
I was glad Evren and Cagla are friends. That will help Bahar. If the daughters continue to bond, that should also help.
I don’t know why Bahar didn’t take Timur’s offer. Perhaps she realized it was not likely to last. Perhaps she is honestly no longer in love with him. Maybe she feels some sympathy for Rengin. Maybe she is starting to feel attraction to Evren. She is so honest, I can see her realizing she was not in the right state of mind. For such a major reunion, she would need to be very much in the mood.
I always like this show.
