Kara Para Ask – Black Money Love – Amor de Contrabando
Episode 70 #1

At Elvan’s home:
Sami, Elif, and Omer are meeting, while Omer is convalescing on the couch.
Omer: What about Metin? Is he talking yet?
Sami: He is insisting on only talking to you, Omer. For security reasons, I put him in a two-person cell. He’s alone right now.
Omer: Good decision, sir. Tomorrow I’ll be better and then we can interrogate him.
Elif: Where do you think you’re going tomorrow? The doctor said you have to rest for a week, plus you’re off work for three months.
Omer disagrees with her. Elif: No! The bullet went into the bone. You can’t more your arm. You have to keep it in the sling, or do you want to undergo more surgery?
Omer: The trial is in a month’s time. Tayyar will try to eliminate Metin. I can’t risk that. I can’t do it. I must see Metin tomorrow.
Sami, Elif, and Omer stare at one another. Sami makes a gesture to Elif suggesting Elif should follow him out.
Sami: I have to go now. I hope you get well soon.
Omer: Thank you, sir.
Elif shows him out.
Sami: You see he’s already asking about it. He’s going to learn the truth. Are you sure about your decision? Maybe you shouldn’t keep it from him anymore. It’s time to tell him.
Elif: No, I’m not going to give up.
Sami: Alright, when do you intend to tell him?
Elif: I’ll tell him at the right time, as he recovers.
Sami: He’s going to get angry about it. Who knows, it might even harm your relationship. Take my word for it.
Elif is thinking deeply.
Back inside, Melike is tidying up after the meeting: Omer, do you want some treats? My mother made them, cabbage and lime. Would you like some?
Omer declines. Elif comes back in after walking Sami to his vehicle.
Omer: What did you talk with Sami about for so long?
Elif: With the chief? He told me to keep an eye on you because you’re so stubborn.
She smiles, but Omer isn’t convinced that’s what was said.
Omer smiles, and says: OK, then.
She offers him some food, and she agrees to eat some if he does.

At Denizer holding:
Levent follows Asli up the stairs. Asli tells him Elif won’t be back until Omer recovers. I’ll take care of things while she’s away. She opens the door to the main office. She tells him she will need some help getting things done as she hasn’t been there in a while. She tells him that once she is more pregnant [uh oh!], she will have to take it easy, but, for now, let’s do what we can. Levent tells her they will check all the files whenever she wishes.

At Elvan’s home:
Melike, Elvan, Elif, Hatice, and Fatma are preparing food at the table. Elif offers to make the soup. Fatma says the kitchen is so small that they can hardly move. [She is such a joy!] Elif chooses some jars of quinoa for the soup. Fatma makes a face. Melike asks her what it is. Elif tells them it’s Grechka Quinoa (Greek quinoa), but the three other ladies look very confused.
Elif: I got the recipe off the internet. I’m sure Omer will love it.
Melike: I hope it tastes better than it sounds. You know, Elif, Omer is quite picky.
Elif: I don’t care. He will eat them because they are full of protein and that’s what he needs now to repair the bone. They’re good for the immune system.
Fatma: Our Tarhana soup is better (in a sing-song voice mocking Elif).

Episode 70 #2
Melike tells Elif her soup is a good idea and tells her Elvan used to send someone to the butcher to buy some marrow bones, which would be really good for Omer right now. She cooked those bones into a soup. We had it when we were young, especially when sick. It was so delicious.
Fatma: That’s what I’m saying. Who cares about the Grechka?
Elvan can see that Elif’s feelings are hurt. Elif tells her that her soup sounds better, and if Omer likes it too, then I can learn.
Elvan: My dear Elif, this (the quinoa) looks like our bulgur. Can we make a good pilaf from that?
Elif, now smiling: Yes.
Alvan: Then make good quinoa or rice, it’ll be good for Omer, too, and then while you’re doing that, I’ll prepare the soup.
Elif: OK. (She smiles and goes into the kitchen to prepare.)
Fatma: What’s the idea with a new meal now? I could cook a traditional pilaf from regular rice.
In the kitchen, Elif removes two bracelets and puts them on a shelf. She opens the quinoa. Melike joins her: It’s your lucky day, Elif. I think my mother is fond of you. She’s not normally so open to new ideas.
Elif ponders this. Melike tells her daughter Demet to go to Sophia and ask for extra tables, chairs, and whatever else is necessary. We are going to have quite a crowd tonight.
Demet: I need help to carry, Mom.
Melike: Bring them one by one. It won’t kill you. It’s good exercise.
Demet gets up to leave and notices the bracelets that Elif took off. She has an almost bewitched look on her face. [This reminds us that she took some things previously from Elif’s home.]
Melike tells her not to hang about and get going. Later we see the table beautifully set with blue and white dishes. Hasan is already helping himself. Melike tells Omer (who is recovering on the couch) that she will remove the blanket since he has been complaining, but he better keep resting or else Mom will get very angry. Omer agrees. Melike suggests that Omer ask Elif’s sister/s for approval for their marriage.
Omer asks if she approves (of the marriage).
Melike: Of course. Do you think they’re going to find a better candidate? She hits him with a friendly blow, which hurts Omer. Melike: Oh, oh oh! I’m so sorry! (She apologizes over and over, while Omer makes a face from the pain.) I didn’t mean to!
Omer: It’s nothing. I’m fine, I’m good.
Melike: Oh, I’m sorry. (She notices Hasan is already stuffing his face.) Hasan, you eat too much. Go and change your clothes. Come along. The guests will be here soon. (He ignores her.) Come on, go and tell your big sister to stop putting on so much makeup. Fatma, you must be exhausted.
Fatma: No, no, we’re fine.
Omer grins at this effort to appease Fatma and at Elif who enters the room.
Elvan comes in, followed by Husseyn, from outdoors where she has apparently been cooking: Chili breads are ready. They’re nice and crispy, too!
Husseyn: I’m jealous! You didn’t prepare any for me? Do I have to shoot myself to get crispy chili breads. (Omer laughs at this.)
Elvan: I make food for you every day. Come on.
Husseyn grins at Elif over this. Husseyn goes over to Omer.
Omer: Uff, you’re treating me like a baby here (as Elvan arranges the blankets).
Elif tells him to stop murmuring like that.
The doorbell rings. It’s the sisters, Nilufer and Asli! Melike welcomes them. Nilufer asks if they should take their shoes off. Melike nods, and Nilufer starts to comply. Asli doesn’t comply, asking: What, shall we sit without shoes?
Melike: This is what we do. I’ll give you slippers. (Big eyeroll from Asli here!) If you feel cold, I can give you woven wool slippers.

Episode 70 #3
Asli and Melike have a stare down, while Nilufer is removing her boots. Melike blinks first: Listen, don’t worry about it. Keep your shoes on if you wish. It’s not important.
Asli strides into the living room, set up as the dining room. Elvan welcomes them all!
Asli: Stop, detective, don’t move (as Omer goes to stand up and welcome them). You are not well enough. Do not leave your bed yet, right? (Husseyn is looking pained about Omer’s condition.) Asli goes on: Isn’t that so, Sheriff? Husseyn plays along, yes, he better not move.
Asli to Omer: Tell me, are they looking at after you well?
Omer grins: Unbelievably. Even more intense than in intensive care, so intense it’s killing me.
Elvan calls them to the table.

We see Arda and Pelin drive up and park. They head up the hill to Elvan’s home. Pelin is carrying something that looks like food. Pelin chickens out halfway up the hill: Arda! I can’t!
Arda runs after her: Pelin, don’t be ridiculous. Come on, Pelin!
She finally turns to him.
Pelin: Arda, I’m not ready to see Omer yet. How can I look him in the eye? What if he doesn’t trust me anymore? I just wouldn’t be able to deal with that. He faced his death because of me.
They stand together at the foot of the stairs looking up at Omer’s home.
Meanwhile, inside, the large group in the makeshift dining room is getting ready to eat.
Omer: it doesn’t hurt that much anymore, but it ruined my jacket, though!
Fatma looks her usual storm cloud as she observes the others at the table. She speaks to Hatice: What kind of dress does she have on? To me it just looks really funny.
Hatice: No, Mom.
Omer asks Nilufer how she is doing. She looks startled, then replies she is as good as she can be.
Asli, stroking Nilufer’s hair, says: But it will get better, won’t it?
Nilufer nods in agreement.
Omer looks at them seriously. He is probably thinking about Fatih/Metin.
Melike is doing something with the dishes, and Elif offers help. Melike says: We’re done here, thanks. They all sit waiting, wondering when they will be able to start eating.
Husseyn: Let’s spray some eau de cologne for the guests to refresh.
Hasan gets up to do this. Asli makes little sarcastic faces. Nilufer frowns at this and Elif just holds her head in frustration. Hasan comes back and offers to spray each guest’s hands. Asli says: Lovely, just like a holiday.
The doorbell rings, and Melike rises to answer. It’s Arda and Pelin.
Husseyn: Where have you been, Arda?
Arda: Traffic. It’s rush hour.
The three sisters look surprised. Elvan welcomes them warmly. Pelin looks uncomfortable. She looks at Omer hesitatingly. Elif smiles. Omer asks her if she wants to sit next to him. She complies, holding back tears.
Pelin: I don’t know how to apologize.
Omer: Apology? There’s no need to apologize.
He gives her a big hug. She smiles.
Omer, while hugging her: Please don’t cry. You’re part of my family. You’ll never need to apologize to me. She still cries.
He says: You’re so upset, you’re making me worried. But maybe you’re hurt more than me.
Pelin: If anything happened to you I …
She hugs him again. The expressions of those around the table range from Elvan, beaming, the three sisters with Asli looking uncomfortable to Husseyn looking a little guilty.
Omer: Don’t worry.
Husseyn: OK, enough. We’re all going to start crying. Come on, everyone is starving. To the table everyone. He calls Hasan to sit with him who has a hard time passing behind Elif, and Elif asks if he was stuck there. Husseyn asks if she is calling him “fatty?”
Elif reacts to that in horror: No, I didn’t mean that at all, please.
Husseyn: It’s OK. I feed him on my lap. Don’t I?
He kisses Hasan.

Episode 70 #4
Asli can’t resist making a comment: The Mad one of this house is Omer’s big brother, I think.
Elvan asks Melike to bring the soup. Elif offers to help. The sisters notice this, which is probably the first time they have ever seen Elif serving. Omer smiles.

At Tayyar’s home:
He is getting a report from someone that I couldn’t identify, probably a doctor: We have checked all the donors on the database, but unfortunately, we couldn’t find any matches for blood type or tissue.
Tayyar: So, what shall we do, huh?
Reporting doctor: We have to ask your closest relatives. We have no other chance.
Tayyar: So, you’re telling me only Mert has the same blood type, huh?
Reporting doctor: No one else.
Tayyar is lost in thought, probably thinking about Fatih.
There is a scene of Fatih in his cell tearing up his letters he has started to Nilufer, unsatisfied with his efforts so far. “My dear wife,” they begin.
He continues to write: I love you so much. You’re beautiful. I don’t want to die and leave you alone. (Then he rips that one up, too.)
He bangs his head on the wall several times.

Back at Elvan’s home, they are breaking down the table/s they used for dinner. Elif offers to help. Melike smiles at her: We’ve cleared everything. Don’t worry, you just sit. Elif sits with her sisters.
Melike, sitting with Elvan says: Thanks. It’s like a wedding party. How nice isn’t it?
In walks Fatma, calling to Hatice to come with her to their room, like martyrs.
Elvan protests: We’re making coffee now.
Fatma: Oh no, no need. My heart beats a little heavy if I have coffee now.
Melike looks very worried.
Fatma bids everyone goodnight. Melike: Oh Fatma, dear, are you off to bed already?
Fatma sighs deeply: She stares at Elif and then says why not and bids everyone goodnight again as she at Hatice leave the room. Omer and Arda come back inside. Omer is pulling on his sling.
Elvan: You’ll get cold! Why are you outside dressed like that?
Omer: I’m fine. Nothing’s going to happen, Mom.
Husseyn bids everyone come inside because the coffee’s ready.
Hasan asks Nilufer her name. He likes it.
Husseyn: Don’t you have any homework today? Go, do your homework. Hasan complies reluctantly.
Omer grins at Elif.
Arda: Husseyn, he’s going to give you plenty of headaches. He’s flirting even at his young age.
Husseyn: Well, he’s learned from the best, hasn’t he?
Demet brings in coffee and serves the sisters first. Asli asks which has one sugar.
Melike tells them to drink up and then she can read their future from the cups.
Asli: Fortunes? I don’t believe it. I advise you not to either. It’s an addiction.
Melike laughs nervously: It’s not because we believe in it. It’s just a little bit of fun.
Nilufer smiles at this.
Melike: You don’t have to believe to have fun.
Husseyn tries to get some conversation going: It’s definitely getting colder outside. Winter is coming. We’re expecting snow this year.
Asli: Could be. All the seasons seem to be out of balance. So our winter could have snow. But enough with the weather. We sound like weathermen.
The three sisters laugh.

Episode 70 #5
Omer looks over without a smile at this. Husseyn feels slighted. Elvan looks at the silly girls very seriously. The girls get into giggling fits and can’t stop.
Husseyn: All right, I don’t get it. What is so funny?
At this point Omer starts to giggle, too.
Demet is in the kitchen and feels the call of Elif’s bracelets. She takes one, puts it back, takes it again and puts it in her pocket. She leaves the kitchen and walks to her room.
Melike sets up the coffee table in its customary situation.
Elvan: OK, All right. I prepared hot kunefe (a sweet treat).
Nilufer: Thank you very much. Everything was delicious. We’re totally stuffed.
Omer: Try the kunefe first, then we talk.
The sisters smile and agree.
Arda suggests they play backgammon.
Asli says yes, Elif is very good at it, but she does still count with her fingers. Elif can’t believe Asli said that, and Omer is amused. Asli continues: On the positive, she is also a very good tennis player and she’s a good swimmer, although she doesn’t like to fish. So, now she doesn’t swim so much anymore. She is definitely afraid of heights, though. Everyone in our family is.
Melike: It makes us sound quite normal.
Nilufer frowns at this.
Asli: Well, I think you’re all a pretty normal and average family, aren’t you all?
Elif is stunned at this! Elvan is hurt, Melike concerned. Husseyn frowns, Omer looks unhappy.
Elif: Asli!
Melike clears her throat: Such a tease for a sister you have, Elif.
Elif smiles at this effort to bring the conversation back to a civil one.
Elif stares daggers at Asli.
Melike: Mom, do you remember when Omer was just a small child and we sent him to buy kunefe (I think) and he fell down on the way back. All the kunefe was gone.
Elvan smiles at this memory.
Omer: I was a pretty small kid in middle school.
Melike: Oh, yes! He was clumsy all through growing up.
Omer isn’t smiling at this. Elif is smiling and shaking her head.
Melike keeps going: I remember him dropping everything. Full containers of yogurt.
Elvan: He was energetic. He was always in a hurry. He tried to do everything. Don’t you remember?
Melike agrees.
The three sisters are smiling at this.
Asli: Well, we should go. When you visit a sick person you should never stay too long.
Elvan: What about dessert?
Nilufer says: thank you, everything was perfect. We’d better go. Asli isn’t feeling well. She really needs to rest.
Asli opens her eyes wide and says: Please don’t get up. It was an absolute pleasure being here and thank you so much for having us. I’m sure we’ll see you soon.
Omer: Thanks for joining us.
Nilufer and Asli leave. Elif shows them out.
The remaining family looks shell-shocked, Elvan especially.
Husseyn: Never mind, Mom, she’s the mad one in the family.
Melike: I can see that.
Pelin: Arda, I think we’d better leave, too. It’s been a long visit and Omer needs some rest.

Episode 70 #6
Omer: Where are you going? We haven’t talked yet. Now that we’ve arrested Metin, we should be able to get Tayyar behind bars.
Husseyn looks unhappy at this topic of conversation.
Omer: So, tell me what’s been going on?
Pelin: I’m on suspension. I’ve being investigated, so I’m at home.
Omer is stunned at this.
Omer: Why?
He looks at Husseyn. No one wants to answer.

Nilufer is driving Asli.
Asli: I get so mad when she (Elif) calls Melike sister. How did she integrate herself to them. I mean, why does she want to be involved with them. I don’t like that Melike girl at all.
Nilufer: But they are very hospitable people, Asli. Well, they’re good people at least. They tried their best to make us feel at home tonight.
Asli: Do you think that being a good person solves everything?
Nilufer: Yes.
Asli: Good for you. Keep thinking like that. Now I understand why you got into so much trouble in the first place.
Nilufer clenches her jaw.
Asli keeps it up: You don’t even know for sure whether your man is a good guy or not.
Nilufer: Asli, please.
Asli: I hope Elif really thinks about this. They are very poor and we come from a different background. I don’t know what she’s thinking. I don’t mean to be funny but it’s true.
Nilufer: So now you humiliate poor people. Good for you. Bravo.
Asli: Never. I only say that everybody should live within their class. How long do you think she can be happy in that kind of lifestyle? Same goes for Omer. How long until he feels uncomfortable that they come from a different life? Omer is a good guy. I also love him. He’s deeply in love with Elif. I can see that, but it’s hard to balance the differences. After the first couple of honeymoon months, the cracks starts to show. I’m telling you, it’s very difficult when you start to realize how different your backgrounds are. It causes friction. Unfortunately.
Nilufer drives on with a sad face. [I’m remembering that Asli has been married twice, so she might be speaking from experience.]

Back at Elvan’s, the young folks are talking.
Omer: What is this garbage? Who’s leading the investigation? Who’s in charge? I want to speak to them. I want to find out why this was kept from me.
Arda: What difference does it make if you know? Let them investigate. They will get absolutely nothing.
Omer: And what is Tayyar doing? I can’t presume he’s playing along nicely.
Arda: Actually, he neither implicates nor clears Metin.
Omer: I’m sure he has a plan. (We see Husseyn looking very serious as he listens to this conversation.) Metin didn’t talk so he’s safe. I’ll make Metin talk just as soon as I get up.
Elif is also looking serious along with Pelin.
Husseyn: Whatever. It’s too late to talk about this now.
Pelin: Husseyn is right. We better leave. It’s very late.
Omer: OK, off you go. I’ll be back in two days, OK?
Husseyn: OK, take her home.
Pelin smiles and kisses Omer’s cheek: I love you so much. You know that?
Omer: I love you two.
[It’s nice to see them smiling at one another, especially Pelin.]
Arda bids everyone good night. Husseyn teases Arda not to be late the next day as he usually is.
Melike, at the door: Thanks for coming.

Episode 70 #7
Elvan wishes them well at the door with Melike.
After they leave, the family (plus Elif) are in the living room.
Melike: What a night! Thank goodness we got through it.
Elif: You look tired.
Melike tells her not to worry about anything. She should go to bed. Omer looks at Melike, who takes the hint and leaves to sort out the kitchen.
Elvan sighs.
Elif: If you don’t mind, I’ll stay a little longer. I’ll probably go after Omer has had his medication, if that’s all right.
Elvan: Of course. This is your house as well. You stay here tonight. I don’t want you to go home alone. After all it is almost midnight.
Omer perks up at hearing this.
Elif: OK, then, let me help you in the kitchen.
Mother and sons smile at one another.
Later, we see Elvan preparing a pillow for Elif. [Oh joy!] it’s Fatma. She is looking for her small bag. [I suspect she is just wanting to know about sleeping arrangements.] Elvan tells her to make herself at home. Fatma says she is not really comfortable because Elvan gave up her bed.
Fatmas: We’ve been a burden on you.
Elvan: We’re a family. In a family there aren’t any burdens.
Fatma: But they put your bed on the floor. It’s winter. Won’t you feel cold?
Elvan: It’s a woolen bed and blanket. It’ll be warm enough. But anyway I’ve prepared this bed for Elif. It isn’t for me, you know.
Fatma looks sufficiently offended at this: You mean she will stay here in the same room as Omer?
Elvan just smiles at her. Fatma leaves, barely saying “good night.” Elvan wishes her the same.
Omer is lying on the couch. Elif says: Hey, Chief, it’s time for your tablets. He looks at her suspiciously: Sorry, do we know each other?
Elif says: What? Don’t look at me like that. I was helping with the dishes in the kitchen.
Omer grins: OK, I was just teasing you. I mean you’re the one who is wearing those slippers.
Elif: No, no, it’s fine with me.
Omer: Looks like you created a fashion for yourself.
Elif: Don’t be naughty.
Omer takes his meds and thanks her very much.
He takes her hand: Beautiful Elif, you’ve been so helpful these last few days.
Elif: It’s nothing compared with what you’ve done for me. It’s partly my fault that you’re shot. For me and my family.
Elvan comes in: I made up your room. Why don’t you go and relax.
Omer: OK, Mom.
Elvan goes to help him stand. He says he can manage himself. But as he tries to get up he winces.
Elvan: Maybe I want to help my son. Is that OK.
Omer smiles and agrees. They manage to get him up with a few groans and they head into the room. Elif follows them. They go out the main door. (The bedrooms seem to be in an adjoining building.) Elif spots Demet and asks her if she saw Elif’s silver bracelet in the kitchen where she left her bracelets. Demet tells her no. Elif says maybe she forgot it somewhere else. She bids Demet good night and leaves.

Episode 70 #8

In the room, Elvan puts Omer to sleep in the bed. Husseyn checks in to see if they need anything else. Omer says no.
Melike brings the blanket in for Elif’s bed they are making on the floor. Elvan says thank you and to let him sleep. Melike explains that the blankets were her mother’s. They are woolen.
Melike: I’m sure you’re more used to a feather or synthetic duvet. This might feel a little heavy for you. But we’re all used to them. In summer, we empty them and we air them out and then we refill them. This is such a lot of work. My mother is very strict about the tradition. I hope it doesn’t make you itch. Are you quite sure you’re going to be all right?
Elif: It’s OK. I can sleep with that. It’s fine.
Omer offers to switch beds, after all, he’s used to sleeping on the floor.
Elif: No, Omer, that’s not necessary. It’s a nice bed. Your eyes are closing. You look pale. You must go to sleep. You must get some proper rest now and get better.
Omer: Yeah, I’m tired.
Melike: OK, good night then.
Omer: Thank you.
Elif wishes her goodnight at the door.
Elif goes to help Omer with his sling.
Melike looks at them interacting with a shocked expression. She leaves, shaking her head.
Elif asks Omer if he’s all right.
Omer: I’m fine.
Elif gets into her bed and they smile at each other.
In Fatma’s room, Melike is bringing her a pillow.
Fatma: Has everyone gone to bed?
Melike: Yes, everyone, except my mother. She’s still praying.
Fatma: Prayer will not help. Who knows what’ll happen in that room tonight. [I love this gossipy exchange between two generations of old-fashioned woman.]
Demet tells her mother that’s rude.
Fatma: What shame. You put gunpowder and fire into the same room, then you can see what will happen and they say there’s nothing official yet. (She mimics): Medication, check the fever. Well, it is none of her business. He has got a mother. This girl, she is attached badly to Omer.
Elvan walks in and says: Fatma, dear, let’s just get this straight. I called Elif to help us. And you know she knows a lot from her time in the hospital and she wants to care for my son and for sure she does it with even more love than me.
Melike: Mom, Fatma is right. Did I ever come and stay in your house before I married Husseyn? People will talk. It’ll be bad for our reputation. We’ll be disgraced.
Elvan warns Melike: You just leave them alone. They have been through enough already and I can’t believe that you are still talking about this. Please, hand me my prayer mat, won’t you? Thank you very much and good night to you.
Melike and Fatma wish Elvan good night.
Back in Omer’s room, Elif looks very tired. She whispers to him: Thank you for everything, Omer.
Omer is mostly asleep.
She goes to lie on her bed, and his eyes pop open. When she looks at him, he playfully closes them again, feigning sleep. She keeps looking at him and walks over to him. She inhales his scent and enjoys being near him for a bit. Then she heads back down to her bed, and his am reaches out and grabs her. They spend a little while looking at one another.
Omer: I’m not going to die, you know. You can’t get away that easy.
She comes closer and he puts his hand on her cheek. More deep staring.
Elif: I want you by my side always.
Omer: I promise. I always will be.

She reaches over and kisses him.
Elif: Be good.
She returns to her bed, but Omer calls her name.
Omer: Elif! Come lie next to me. I want to have your scent near me.
Elif: Your mother is right there. What do you think she’s going to think of me?
Omer: Then let her think. They know that I’m head over heels in love with you.
Elif grins and then goes back to her bed saying: Not before marriage.
Omer: Is that your way of proposing to me?
That gets a rise out of Elif, who sits up in bed: Excuse me, proposing to you? You are so naughty.
Omer laughs at her cheeks, which he says are blushing.
Omer: Oh, my shoulder is aching so badly. It’s so sore.
Elif kisses him again. And gets back on her bed.
They look lovingly at one another.
Omer: Buona note, Signorina.
Elif: Good night, Chief.
He reaches his hand out for hers. They finally close their eyes and sleep.
The next morning, Elif is stroking Omer’s head. His eyes open and he smiles.
They wish each other good morning.
Omer admits to a little pain around the stitches. Elif kisses them. She tells Omer he’ll be OK. She offers to bring his breakfast. He sits up with a groan.
Omer: You know, I could get used to this. Maybe I should get shot again.
Elif: Don’t, don’t ever say that again! Don’t even mention getting shot again. You scare me.
Omer: OK. I was just joking.
Elif: Well, don’t. Please don’t. No joking about it.
She already has a tray with his breakfast, simit and milk. Tea will come after he drinks the milk. She also gives him more pills.
Omer has been thinking: Elif, today I need to see Metin.
Elif: No, Omer.
Omer: Elif, this is my job and this is my case. Please, I’m asking, let me finish it.
They stare very seriously at each other.

At Pelin’s:
Arda knocks on the door with a sack of food.
Arda: Coffee of the day, here you go.
Pelin is smiling again and thanks him. There are flowers in the sack, too.
Arda: We have brownies too, you’ll love them. And here is today’s paper. Flowers are hidden in lots of places. [Arda is a romantic.]
Pelin: You’re very chipper this morning.
Arda: Oh, please be nice. Do you have anything in your hair?
Another flower! Arda: Well, here’s something.
He tells her he knows it’s improper for a police officer to be so adorned (with flowers) but I just wanted you to know how I feel. OK, I’ll go now.
Pelin: Arda? Thank you.
Pelin kisses his cheek. They smile at each other for a bit, and then Arda heads to work.

In the jail:
Guards bring Metin out of his cell.
Metin: I don’t think you understand what I’m saying.
The guard gestures him into the room.
There’s a man there in a suit. Fatih says that’s it and calls for the guard: This meeting is over.
The suit: Mr. Fatih, please. I brought a letter from your father. I will give it to you and leave.
Fatih: Tell him to send me the letter through the post office. He knows my address.
The suit: I’ve already brought it to you here. He sincerely asks you to read it. He says it’s very important.
Fatih: Hmmm. (Fatih thinks about this.)
