Poder y Traición/Yalı Çapkını (Kingfisher)

I can’t believe I didn’t notice it sooner! Telemundo is playing this dizi at 12:30 am on my NYC station. They’re already 16 episodes in. I watched all 101 Turkish episodes of this dizi as it aired each week in Türkiye. It broke ratings records and has been sold to over 120 countries.

IMHO, the first season was phenomenal. I was hooked from the first episode. They fiddled too much with it in the second and third seasons, but I continued watching because of the amazing performances and extreme chemistry of the leads, Afra Saraçoğlu (Seyran) and Mert Ramazan Demir (Ferit). The supporting cast is excellent.

Güldiyar Tanrıdağlı created an exquisite, award-winning soundtrack, and the choice of additional songs were fantastic. I expect that Telemundo won’t give us the songs though.

I have YouTube TV and they have all the episodes posted. I’ll start recording them. I’m curious to see how much they will chop. I know they will and it’s a shame.

If you have a chance, find the first few episodes and give them a try. Let me know what you think. I would love to have a discussion even if we can’t recap. This deserves to be in prime time.

Poder y traicion

Dondi, I watched a few episodes several years ago understanding nothing because it was in Turkish, but I liked it. The first scene is compelling in any language.

It’s available on youtubetv and is on peacock. I started the first episode today in Spanish on peacock. I would enjoy commenting with you. I don’t think I can catch up to episode 16 anytime soon. Maybe after Lejos winds up.
I’m open to any suggestions of how to do it.

It was called Golden Boy as well IIRC.

Here’s another quickie. Alya is increasingly suspicious of Fikriye and the photo with Boran in it. Fiko lies, saying she never showed it to anyone.

Halis finds out Fiko was not murdered and is irate.

Nare’s operation was successful. The family is happy. Sahin and Zerrin also hear this. Ozkan didn’t mention his drinking problem, so he’s in bad shape. He had an embolism during the surgery and may have brain damage.

Fidan comes to the hospital and is rejected by both her children.

Nare wakes up. Cihan, looking through the glass at her, cries from the emotion.

Kadir comes home and is fussed over by the staff, including Pakize.

Cihan talks with Fiko. She wants him to swear he’ll never abandon Alya. Never let go of her hand. He promises.

Fiko is playing with Deniz. Looks like he got a bike. Alya looks but doesn’t find anything to allay her suspicions when she searches Fiko’s room.

Nare is conscious. Alya comforts her, saying they all love her. She’s moved from the ICU to a room. The whole family comes to visit. Sada thanks Allah. [She wouldn’t be needing a transplant if her mother hadn’t shown up in divorce court.] When Nare asks, Cihan tells her that the donor was Ozkan. Nare looks miserable and says she wishes she’d have died. Sada is stricken. I’m surprised Nare gets to her feet, but she looks in on Ozkan.

Mine is still trying to find Ugur’s “evidence”. She gets up on a wheeled chair, a bad move, to get to a high place. Whoops. I’m sure this is how the writers solved the inconvenient fetus, but no. It’s fine, despite the hard fall and some stomach clutching by Mine.

Alya searches Fiko’s purse that she left at the hospital and finds the photo of Fiko with Halis from six years ago.

Fiko goes to the prison again. Alya follows. Fiko accuses him of the attack. She also tells him she recorded a video about Halis likely being behind Boran’s death. She sent it to her lawyer. If anything happens to her… Alya shows up and hears Halis say he’ll tell Sadakat and say it was Fiko who was paid for showing him the photo. Alya yells at Halis. You did it! She asks if Fiko showed it to him. There’s a lot of shouting.

Cihan shows up, aghast. Alya faints. At the konak Cihan grills Fiko. She’s still evasive. [When she understood that’s how Boran was found, she should have confessed it all to Alya, saying she had no idea what would happen. She’s just made it worse, looking like she might have done it for money.]

Cihan tells Fiko he saw the recording of her accident. Someone tried to kill her. Alya comes into the room and shows Cihan the photo of Boran, Alya, and baby Deniz. Cihan tells Fiko she lied, saying Boran was not in the photo. He asks if she sold his brother. Fiko gets a call. Cihan orders her to put it on speaker. It’s Halis, asking if she told Cihan. She says she did not. He says that if she tells Cihan, he’ll say Fiko did it for money. Cihan seems to suspect that might have been the case.

"CASILLAS"
Howdy from the Alamo City CarayCaray Family. Here's my super-short recap of last night's episode.

*Ultimos Capitlos: Roberta & President Carmela meeting inside Roberta's office discussing something that I hadn't comprehend.

*Paco having his Mess Around & Find Out moment with Hothead Diana.

*Why is Gullible Angela always following Paco around like a damn dog ?

*Crazy Vic & Nutty Ofelia hiding & lurking at the local cemetery.

*The Bodyguards of Slick-Haired Glasses Dude & Lizzie kill that uppity snitch & dump his body inside the large container or whatever that is.

*Ismael speaking with Roberta. Looks like Ismael & Co., are going to find out about the juicy dirty little secrets of Roberta & Ligia very soon 😃

Lejos

I do agree that Fike should have admitted to Alya that she showed Halis the Boran photo, not knowing what would happen. Since she lied about it, Fike probably did get paid.

Lejos, Uzak Sehir, is stretching credibility pretty far in this episode with Cihan's actions and knowledge. Since Alya took a taxi from the back door of the hospital to the prison, we have to assume another Cihan henchman was stationed back there and followed the taxi. How else would Cihan have known to head for the prison? Or perhaps he was following Fike.

And how, how was Fike's accident filmed? It happened in the boonies out in the hills. Are the hills covered with CCTV towers? No way Cihan would have known (seen the video) about the attempted murder.

Looking forward to the next episodes, which I will have to watch on a delayed basis due to my schedule this week.

OT - Poder

Poder y Traición mentioned above is available in the NBC app (and presumably in the Telemundo app). I find that the NBC app is stronger (more robust) than the Telemundo app. (Just as I watch PBS dramas on Amazon Prime because it is a better functioning app than PBS Passport (though there is a small fee)).

Lejos

Thank you big time, Novelera!

I was wondering that too, Anastasia - how was the accident caught on video! Whose video?

Boy, Cihan came up within inches of Alya’s face and looked at her intensely. How could she have that handsome man so very close and not grab him and smooch him?

Maggie

Lejos - Oh Maggie, I have been wondering why Cihan doesn't just kiss Alya. Besides the censorship, I suppose Cihan needs to have his brother's widow make the first move.

Lejos - To add, both Cohan and Alya think the other person only wants the business-protection relationship. And Cihan fell for Alya before Alya fell for Cihan. But it will be hard to get over the brother's widow hump.

lejos

Anastasia, loved the "brother's widow hump"! Yes, some things don't make sense, Maggie. Especially about cameras on a seemingly deserted road. And Cihan popping up fast ALL THE DAMN TIME.

As I was speeding through the episode on the DVR to come up with my quickie, I noticed Cihan being inches from Alya's face but didn't write a note. Thus it was not included in what I posted. But it was significant. I think you're right, Anastasia, that Alya would need to make the first move. Honor is big in Mardin.

Lejos
Novelera, thank.you for the recap . It was a bright spot today while still dealing with snow, ice, and daytime temps in the teens. Susan

lejos

Thank you for a Monday special, novelera.

I checked with the original episode and no big edits, but Halis was visibly upset when he went back to his cell and Ecmel asked him what was wrong. Halis did not tell him what happened. I wonder why.

I’m with the rest of you about Cihan having video of Fiko’s accident. Does he have drones following everyone now? And ITA that Fiko should have come clean to Alya as soon as she made the connection with the photo of Halis’ she found in Deniz’s room.

Poder y Traición

Thanks for the app info, Anastasia.

Babachita, we can revisit after Lejos ends. Maybe this could be our next side project after KPA. We're about half way through with that.

I watched the first 5 eps and there were already some disappointing edits. On a positive note, they played a Turkish song!

lejos OT Poder

Cihan seems to have a first class intel network. He always shows up when stuff is happening. He is either very lucky or he has people reporting in from everywhere. His people seem to have respect for him. I like that. They may fear disappointing him but it’s clear he doesn’t have to scare them into compliance as some less charismatic leaders do.

Dondi, I am getting hooked already on Poder. I’m almost done with Episode 2. Tonight I have Lejos but I am already hoping to keep going tomorrow. I made a big list of main characters which has been helpful.

Gaziantep reminds me of Mardin/Midyat a bit. I finally realized it’s often called Antep. That was confusing. I spotted Yaya from Hija!

Gaziantep isn’t too far from Adana (Karsu) but I can’t remember the town that Atilla’s father cooked food from!

Babachita

Poder y Traicion

Dondi, who was the girl who climbed to the roof to get into Ferit’s room? Her mother looks familiar from some dizi. I thought daughter’s name was Ayse but there is an Aysen in the cast list, so maybe that’s her. That opening scene is memorable!

Babachita

Poder y Traicion

Glad you’re enjoying this, Babachita. “Golden Boy” is one of the titles they use for international sales.

They will refer to the city as Antep in this dizi. Yes, Yahya from Embajador is Fuat, Ferit’s brother. The girl in Ferit’s bed isn’t really important. I don’t even remember her name. Her mother, Sacide, is a bit more important. The actor that plays Sacide was Menekse’s mother in Embajador.

They cut a very beautiful scene of the staff getting up at the break of dawn. Latif prays, then helps Halis get dressed, others get dressed and start to prepare for the day. Kind of a “behind the scenes” look at the lives of the staff.

FYI, these mansions by the water in Istanbul are called "yalı". The Turkish title, Yalı Çapkını, is a bit of a play on words. A yalıçapkını is a kingfisher bird. But a yalı is a "mansion" and a “çapkın” is a "womanizer". So the title could be "the mansion's womanizer."

Be careful looking at cast lists, they might give you some spoilers.

In Karsu, Attila’s father, Hasan, prepared food from Urfa at his sıra gecesi.

"CASILLAS"
Howdy from the Alamo City CarayCaray Family. Here's my super-short recap of last night's episode.

*We're still in Ultimos Capitulos & things are getting interesting.

*Isabel goes off on Isidro & abruptly cuts off the virtual streaming. Too bad LOL!

*Lizzie & Gullible Angela find the hand of the deceased Snitch. Lizzie is pissed off!

*We see Lizzie demanding answers from Slick-Haired Glasses Dude & two of the security guards. Long story short: Slick-Haired Glasses Dude gets taken to some torture chamber on Lizzie's orders.

*Gullible Angela needs to go to some convent in Vatican City LOL.

*Paco & Hothead Diana have too much tension, which can be relieved one way 😎

Episode 64 #1
Un grave problema – A Serious Problem

Cihan, Alya, and Fiko are in her room.
Cihan has Fiko put her phone call on speaker. It’s Halis.
Fiko: How’d you get my number, you infeliz? Who gave it to you?
Halis: That doesn’t matter. Did you tell Cihan?
Fiko: No, not at all.
Halis: Good, Fikriye, very good. Don’t tell Cihan anything, OK?
Halis: If I go down, I’m taking you down with me. Remember that. If you tell Cihan that you sold out Boran, I’ll tell him that you did it for money. You know I’ll do it, too.
Cihan and Alya are making awful faces as they listen to this.
Fiko: You lie. That’s not true, you desgraciado. I never took your money. You’re disgusting.
Halis: Fikriye, you didn’t come to demand your share of the money? Fine, I suppose I didn’t transfer an enormous sum to your account either.
Fiko: You’re a lying infeliz. If I didn’t already find you so pathetic. Stop lying you dam loco. You’ll pay for this, you’ll see.
Halis: You’ll be back, Fikriye. I’m certain of it. One of these days, you’ll come back. Listen to me. Be smart and tell them nothing. I’ll pay you ten times what I paid you before, and all your problems will be solved. Don’t tell anyone this either, but I’m about to get out.
Cihan can’t stand anymore, grabs the phone and hangs up.
Cihan: That settles it. You heard it. What was all that?
Fiko: I swear he’s lying. I didn’t take his money. Alya, let’s talk.
Cihan: How am I supposed to believe you after hearing that?
Fiko: That man used me and he’s still using me. Alya, you were in that car too. Do you really think I’d do something so vile to you?
Alya looks at her painfully but says nothing.
Cihan: What about him transferring money to your bank account?
Fiko: I didn’t know he’d done that. And, since we dated, he had my account information.
Cihan: Then why did you lie to us? If you knew he was living in the konak and that we were in contact with him, why didn’t you tell me?
Fiko: I swear it wasn’t because of me. I was scared for Alya. I was so happy when she sent me that picture. I just wanted to share my joy with someone else. I couldn’t have known that doing that would lead to catastrophe. I was scared for my daughter and worried that she’d be blamed for what I did. Look, Cihan, shoot me if you want to. The guilt, it was too much to bear.
Cihan: No, I’m not going to shoot you. I choose to believe what you tell me is true, but just to be clear, I’m only doing it for your daughter.
He leaves.
Fiko to Alya: Listen to me. You believe me, don’t you?
Alya shakes her head, but answers: I have no choice but to.
Fiko: Daughter, I’m begging you to believe me. I completely surrendered my life for you. You’re in danger in this house, and I didn’t want you to be blamed for my mistakes. That’s why I kept it from you.
Alya: The only thing that matters is that my son is in danger. Somebody murdered my husband and my son is in danger now, do you understand?
She leaves Fiko alone.
Fiko: What did I do, my darling?!!!

Episode 64 #2
Cihan is in his cave, drinking. He throws the decanter to the floor, shattering the crystal. He hits the oud from the wall, breaking it into pieces. He hollers out loud and Kaya comes in.
Kaya: What’s wrong, brother?
Cihan continues hurling things.
Kaya: Get a hold of yourself. Calm down. Stop and tell me what happened.
Cihan starts to get control of himself.
Kaya: What is it? Why are you so mad?
Cihan: I’ll tell you. It’s Boran. It wasn’t an accident. They killed him, Kaya.
Kaya: They killed him you say? I knew it. Of course they killed him. Who was it? Demir? I’ll kill him.
Cihan: It wasn’t, Kaya.
Kaya: Then tell me who did it.
Cihan: Halis.
Kaya: Halis killed him?
Cihan: No, he was the one who discovered Boran’s location.
Kaya: In Canada? So he knew about Canada? How’d he find out?
Cihan: Don’t ask about that.
Kaya: Why can’t I ask you? You’re my brother. Tell me who told Halis.
Alya enters the room. She tells him Fikriye.
Alya continues: Years ago, she asked me for a picture of my family, and I sent it to her, and she showed it to Halis.
Kaya asks her to repeat it, which she does.
Kaya: Why, Alya? I don’t believe it! Why? Why?
Cihan: Kaya, calm down.
Alya: I didn’t know.
She leaves the brothers in the cave.

At the hospital
Nare is walking down the hall from the ICU with a cane, and she finds Sahin there.
Sahin: I’m so sorry. I only came to see how he was doing.
Nare: Ozkan is sleeping. But I’m awake.
Sahin: I held him at gunpoint. I’m prepared to pay for the mistakes I’ve made in order not to lose you but never point a gun at yourself again. I couldn’t take the guilt. If you were to die, so would my soul. I lost sight of everything else just to have you with me. I set all this in motion. I’m sorry.
Nare: Don’t apologize.
And then we hear the dulcet tones of Sadakat arriving to join the conversation: Let him.
Nare: Stay out of it, Mom.
Sadakat: Nare, your husband’s fighting for his life and you tell him not to apologize?
Nare: Can’t you see the shape we’re all in? Stop pressuring him.
Sadakat: You’re the one pressuring him. I warned you. I told you your relationship with Sahin would never work out. Let him apologize. You risked your life for him. You almost died, Nare. Did you know that while you were fighting for your life, I paid them a visit at their house? Fidan could have donated her kidney to you. I got on my knees and begged her to save my daughter. Do you know how she responded? She said she had no intention of saving your life. She practically let you die. [I’m sure Sadakat wouldn’t have done this for any of Fidan’s family.]
Nare looks to Sahin for verification of this.
Sadakat: Am I lying, Sahin? Tell her yourself.
They all stare for a while and then he says: It’s true. My mother refused. I begged her, but she refused to help you.
Sahin to Sadakat: If the situation were reversed, would you have been a donor? If it had been Zerrin, and my mother was begging you to donate, would you have done it? Would you have saved her? (Sadakat stares at him for a while in silence.) Of course not. It’s so like you to blame others for not doing something that you yourself wouldn’t do.
Sahin walks away. Nare hobbles away in the other direction, leaving Sadakat to her miserable thoughts.

Episode 64 #3

Back at the konak
Cihan and Kaya walk out of the building.
Kaya: Was her showing him the picture really just an accident?
Cihan: That’s what she says.
Kaya: Did that rat Halis know she was Alya’s mother?
Cihan: I have no idea.

At Ecmel’s konak
Zerrin asks Sahin how Nare is doing.
Sahin: Fine, fortunately.
Zarrin: And Ozkan?
Before he can answer, Fidan joins them: Welcome son. You haven’t been home in a while. It’s nice to see you. Come in, the food’s been served.
Sahin: I’ll be in my room, not at your table.
Fidan: You’re making me feel really bad.
Sahin: Don’t feel bad. You have reason to be happy. Now Nare can’t get divorced. I can’t bring her here or tell her I love her. Take solace in that. It’ll heal your pain.
He leaves her to go into his room.
In walks Demir. He is headed to dine, but Zerrin says they’re leaving and she is getting her things.
Fidan: Why don’t you eat something first?
Demir: No thank you, take care.
She’s left alone to ponder her crime.

In the cave, Kaya, Cihan, Erol, Kadir, and Muzaffer are meeting.
Cihan: Halis knew his location.
Erol (speaking like a lawyer): Has that been confirmed?
Cihan: Halis mentioned the exact place.
Muzaffer: So, it was that dam infeliz?
Kadir: Who would have suspected? We suspected the Baybars and it was Baldie all along.
Kaya: Tell us, did he have any reason to hate our family?
Cihan: No, all he cared about was the money.
Kaya, saying his usual: Fine, I’ll kill him.
Cihan: I’m going to kill him. He’s mine. But not yet. Now’s not the time. We must be patient and strike at just the right moment because if I eliminate him right away, the person who sent him will escape. Because Halis may not have killed him. He might have just given up his location. Regardless, he’ll be punished. No doubt. Listen up. No one, absolutely nobody outside this room can find out we’re onto Halis. He points at every one in turn. Did you hear me, Kadir? And just to warn you, my mother will pressure you to tell her everything.
Muzaffer: Calm down, we get it.
Erol: Cihan, don’t worry.
Cihan: We’ll get Halis to talk and then we’ll get rid of him. That Syrian guy Hamada will tell us where to find the real killer. And what’ll we do when we have them in our hands? We’ll punish that rat Halis.
Kaya: Allah willing.
Cihan: Find out what Canadian prison is holding that guy, and don’t take too long. We have to get back to the office.
Erol: Don’t worry, we’ve already begun the search.
Cihan: He’s going to pay.
Demir is driving Zerrin. She asks him to stop because she doesn’t feel well. She tells him to stop the car NOW. He looks surprised but then pulls over, sighing loudly at the inconvenience. She jumps out and throws up. He gets out to help her.
Demir: Zerrin, are you OK?
Zerrin: Don’t come near me. I’m fine. Don’t touch me.
Demir: Hey, why are you nauseous anyway? Are you pregnant?
Zerrin: I get nauseous just looking at you. It’s nothing more than that.

Episode 64 #4

At Sadakat’s konak, Fiko goes to walk out the front gate.
Fiko: I just want to go out. Do you know where the driver is? Where’s my car?
The henchies look at her like they don’t understand her.
Seymus says her car is on the other side of the street.
Fiko: Can you show me where the car is?
He walks her up the hill to where her car is waiting. He keeps looking back at her. She starts to faint and reaches out to him, and grabs his gun, pointing it at him.
Seymus: What are you doing?
Fiko: Stay back!
The other henchies run up and she tells them she is going to shoot.
Put down the gun, ma’am.
Stay back! Stay back and don’t get in my way.
Seymus runs back to the konak to get a car.
She starts her car and drives off.
Cihan drives up and sees Seymus running up to get Alya. As she comes out, Cihan, Kaya, Kadir, and Muzaffer join them.
Seymus: Ms. Fikriye took my gun, got in her car, and left. I tried to stop her.
Alya: Are you serious? How’d she get your gun? [Seymus’ already bad day is getting worse, fast.]
Seymus: She pretended to faint, and when I was holding her, she took it from me.
Alya: I can’t believe it.
Sadakat: What is that woman doing?
Kaya: I’m going to kill you (to Seymus). How’d you let her steal your gun?
Cihan: Control yourself. When was this?
Seymus: Just now.
Alya: I’m going after her.
Cihan: No, Alya. Stay here. I’ll send men to find her.
Alya: She could get hurt.
Cihan: I get why you’re worried but the guys will find her. Kadir, Muzffer, take all our men and find Ms. Fikriye. Don’t forget she’s armed.
Cihan tells Kaya: Tell the guys that as punishment for their carelessness I’m going to strip them of their guns. We’ll see what they do then.
Sadakat: Hopefully they can find that woman and we can find out what pushed her to behave like that.
She looks at them carefully and asks: Is there something I should know about this woman?
Cihan: No.
He asks Sadakat: How is Nare?
Sadakat: Better.
Cihan: Has Ozkan still not gotten up? Any improvements?
No, she answers.
Sadakat stares at everyone and then leaves, sure that they aren’t telling her something important.

Episode 64 #5

In Fiko’s car, her phone rings. It’s Alya. Fiko won’t answer her.
Fiko calls Cihan: Hello.
Fiko: Hi Cihan. Is my daughter with you?
Cihan: She’s right here.
Fiko: Please put me on speakerphone.
Alya: What are you doing? Why don’t you answer your phone? Where are you? Why did you take a gun? I demand an explanation.
Fiko: Calm down, Alya. I’m not going to kill myself. I’m not that big a coward and it’d be a waste of a bullet. The bullets in this gun have Halis’ name on them.
Alya: He’s already in prison. In fact, you can’t get to him. Come back right now.
Fiko: He’ll be out soon. I can wait.
Alya: Where will you stay? Where will you go? You’re sick and need treatment.
Fiko: Don’t waste your time, Alya. I’m dying.
Cihan: Ma’am, listen to me. Please send me your location. It doesn’t matter where you are, I’ll have the guys bring you back. Don’t do anything crazy.
Fiko: I can’t go back after what happened. Showing Halis that picture of Boran led to disaster. I don’t deserve forgiveness. But I didn’t know when I did it. I don’t even care anymore whether or not you believe me. What I care about is my daughter. Halis threatened me by saying he’d accuse Alya of sending the picture when she knew what would happen. I was afraid that Alya would suffer because of me. But listen, no matter what happens, you must trust her. Never doubt or distrust her.
Cihan: Rest assured that I will always trust your daughter.
Fiko: Thank you, son. That’s all I needed to hear. Take care of each other. You took my call and you listened to me. You are a good man. Thank you. I’m going to turn off my phone so please don’t call. I’m going to pray for you two.
Alya grabs the phone and begs her not to hang up, but the phone is no longer working.
Alya is crying very hard.
Alya: What am I going to say to your mother? I know she’ll just blame me. She’s been saying I sold him down the river since day one, that I killed her son. She told me I killed Boran. And all because I mailed a picture. I don’t know what else to do. It’s my fault.
Cihan: She won’t find out.
Alya: She will. Sooner or later she will. She’ll demand answers and confront me. She didn’t do it on purpose. I mailed her the picture, Cihan. Oh, Boran, why didn’t you tell me? He didn’t warn me. Why couldn’t he trust me?
Cihan: No.
Alya: Cihan, if he’d said, Alya, I’m in trouble. This is the real me and this is my family and I’m on the run. I swear I would have protected him. I promise I never wanted anything bad to happen to him. If I’d known, I would’ve been more careful and not mailed that picture and now my son wouldn’t be in danger.
Cihan: There’s one thing you don’t know. It’s not that easy to confess something so serious. He should’ve told me if our son was at risk. I was his wife. He would’ve been protecting our son. We both would have protected Deniz. How will I protect him now that I’m alone? I‘m here, trapped with my son. I have a life I never wanted, one that’s completely ruined. And so is my son’s. Plus, I don’t know who’s hunting us, who we’re running from. How will I protect Deniz?
Cihan: Listen to me, Alya. I’ll protect him.
Alya: From whom? How? Didn’t you say the Baybars were behind this? They weren’t. It was Halis. Who will you protect him from? I don’t think it was Halis. He must’ve just given up the location, but we’ll see.

Episode 64 #6
Alya: To whom, Cihan? We don’t know who’s after my son, and I have no idea how to protect him because I don’t know who is after Deniz. Who’s after my son? Who are we running from?
Cihan yells: I don’t know!!! (He is sobbing) I don’t know, and I don’t know what else to do. Everyone has their own crisis to confront, and I’m not up for this challenge. My brother’s gone and I’ll never see him again. The man who was always my example is never coming back. I’ve formed a strong bond with Cihan. He even calls me Dad. I’m not protecting him because I made a promise or because I’m his uncle. I protect him because I’m his father and he’ll never be alone again. You understand?
Alya reaches for him and both are crying while they hug for a long time. As they separate, Alya strokes his arm lovingly and Cihan cups his hands around her head. With tears in his eyes, Cihan tells her: Thank you. Alya covers his hands with hers. [This scene left me very impactada.]
Deniz eventually comes in saying he had a nightmare. They both go to him.
Cihan: What did you dream?
Deniz: I dreamed I had a brother.
Alya: Don’t worry son, it was just a dream.
Cihan: It was just a nightmare, son.
Alya: I’ll tell you a nice story that’ll give you sweet dreams. Let’s go to bed.

Sadakat is snooping in Fiko’s room, which is very messy. Then she goes into the cave and sees the mess Cihan made of that room. She is very concerned.
Cihan is sitting in his part of their suite looking at a picture of him and his two brothers. Alya knocks and asks permission to enter.
Cihan: Come in. Did he go to sleep?
Alya: Yes. Cihan, her phone’s still turned off? Any news?
Cihan: No, they’re still looking for her.
Alya: You said Halis might not have done it. Who could’ve killed Boran?
Cihan: No idea. I don’t know, but at this point, anything’s possible. It could have been Halis or Demir. Or my uncle.
Alya: Ecmel?
Cihan: His hate towards us is immense. He even tried to kil Kaya. He’s capable of anything.
Alya: Boran was his son.
Cihan: Yes, he was, but did he know that?
Alya: I hope he didn’t do it.
Cihan: With any luck, he didn’t murder his son.
Alya: Remember that man in prison? Hamada or something? Maybe he knows who had him killed.
Cihan: I’m going to find that guy and make him talk. Don’t worry. I’ve got it right here. They’re all on my list. I’ll catch them. (He crumples up the picture of the brothers.)
Alya watches him for a while and then says she wants to ask a question: If you find the murderer, what will you do? Or Halis? What will you do with him?
Cihan: I don’t know yet. I’ll worry about that later.
Alya: Listen. Don’t even think about killing him.
Cihan: I said I’d deal with that later.
Alya: I don’t want you getting your hands dirty. Please.
Cihan: Those people killed my brother, and I’ll remind you that they’re after Cihan. Listen to me. I have obligations I must keep. The first of which is to avenge my brother’s death and protect Cihan. These desgraciados will pay for what they did, and I’ll decide when and where they receive their punishment.
Alya: You’ll leave them for the authorities.
Cihan signals no and tells her to get some rest.
Alya: Cihan.
Cihan: Good night, Alya.
They have a staring contest. No more tears here, just hard looks. Alya gets up and leaves, saying: You’re not going to kill anyone.
Cihan says under his breath: We’ll see about that.

Episode 64 #7

At the Albora office
Two henchies are walking out the gates describing Fiko’s car and license plate as well as Fiko.
Hasan has just driven up and hears this.
Hasan: Beyto.
Bayto: Hasan, what is it?
Hasan: Is that Ms. Fikriye’s car?
Beyto: Yes, she escaped the konak and Muzaffer ordered us to find her.
Hasan: She escaped?
Beyto nods.
Hasan: And where was she going?
Beyto: She was headed toward the ruins of Hasankeyf. Let’s go (to the other henchie.)
Hasan: Hey, wait. Get back to work. I’ll take care of it.

At the konak
Breakfast table with Kaya, Cihan, Sadakat and Alya.
Sadakat to Cihan as if Alya isn’t there: Any word from her mother?
Cihan: No.
Sadakat: I was in her room last night. Clothes all over the place. It was a complete mess. And then I went to check your office, and it had been torn apart. Did something blow up there, Alya?
What happened when I was away from the mansion? You know you can’t hide anything from me, Cihan. Tell me what happened.
Cihan: I know I can’t hide anything from you. Your suspicions are correct. We have a serious problem. (Alya’s head swings around at this)
Sadakat: OK, what is it?
Cihan: I’ll tell you later.
Sadakat: Cihan, whatever’s happening, you must tell me now.
Cihan: I’ll tell you later. I have to understand the situation first, and when I do, I’ll explain it to you.
Sadakat: You cannot ignore me.
Cihan: I’m am not ignoring you, but you get an idea in your head and…it doesn’t matter. (He gets up from the table and leaves.)
Sadakat: Cihan
Alys follows Cihan.
Sadakat: She knows too. That’s why she got up. (She turns to Kaya) Tell me what’s going on.
Kaya: Cihan told you to wait. Be patient. (He gets up) Bon appetit.
Sadakat is incredulous and has her mouth open to speak but there’s no one to hear her.
She tells herself: Everyone’s avoiding the subject. They’re obviously hiding something. Do they think I won’t find out? You can’t hide anything from me, son. I will find out.

Episode 64 #8

Cihan is going down the stairs to leave, followed by Alya. Alya tells him this is serious because his mother suspects something. She’s going to find out that Halis found Boran.
Cihan: She won’t. We won’t tell her.
Kaya joins them and then Deniz comes down with a pinwheel.
Cihan gets a call from Erol.
Erol: Are you busy?
Cihan goes down the stairs to the bottom level and into his cave. I’m listening.
Erol. The Syrian just got a new lawyer and court accepted his appeal and new lawyer. Long story short, the Syrian’s out.
Cihan: Are you joking? I thought you were following that case closely.
By now Kaya and Alya are in the cave as well.
Erol: The court kept it confidential. Plus, he’s in Canada. We can’t control it.
Cihan: Yeah, whatever, I don’t care. Get me inside Halis’ cell.
Alya: What?
Erol: What now?
Cihan: Cihan: You heard me, you’re going to take me to Halis’ cell. Kaya and I will see you and sort out the details. Bye.
Aya: What do you mean? Are you breaking into jail?
Cihan to Kaya: Let’s go.
Alya: Stop!
She follows him outside and Sadakat is in a good listening place as they continue to argue outside.
Alya: have you lost your mind?
Cihan: Alya!
Alya: Stop it, Cihan! Don’t you know what’ll happen in there?
The three of them face one another, and we get a clear view of Sadakat’s viewpoint from her balcony. All three look up at her.
Cihan: Do you want her to hear you?
Alya: You’re right, she can hear us. We’ll talk outside.
Alya gets into his vehicle. She tells him to get in. He says he has work to do.
Alya: What a coincidence, so do I. Get in.
Cihan: Get out now.
Alya: I told you to get in.
He tells Kaya, Kadir and Muzaffer to go ahead to the office and he’ll meet them there.
He gets into his vehicle.
Sadakat is watching with interest. [I think she’ll get the info from Kadir or Muzaffer.]

We see Hasan at the ruins. He sees Fiko way up high, and he takes off to catch up to her. She is holding the pistol. Hasan sees the gun.
Hasan: Ms. Fikriye?
Fiko: Go back the way you came.
Hasan: What are you doing here and where did you get that gun?
Fiko: Didn’t you hear me? Get lost.
Hasan: Why all the hostility, ma’am? Everybody’s looking for you and you are here with a gun? Let’s go back to the konak.
Fiko: Go away. I recommend you not try my patience. I’m not going back.
Hasan: Why’d you leave? What happened? Did my sister upset you? I know she’s got a temper. Did she say something to offend you?
Fiko: Will you leave already?
Hasan: Think this through. Where will you stay? It’s dangerous for a woman to be in the middle of nowhere.
Fiko: Well, if I tell you, you’ll betray me.
Hasan: I’ve never betrayed anyone in my life, believe me. Fine. If you won’t go back to the konak, you can stay with me. I offer you my home. I promise not to hurt you.
Fiko: That’s quite bold of you. But your sister would kill you, and I don’t need any more problems. Get out of here now.

Episode 64 #9
Hasan: Listen, I swear I won’t tell anyone your whereabouts. I swear it on my life. I swear on my honor. You can be my guest of honor until things blow over. I can sleep in my office. Stay in my house. I won’t hurt you. You can leave whenever you like.
She finally puts down her gun.
Hasan: You listened. What a relief. You’re a very stubborn woman. Why do you need the gun?
Fiko: To protect my loved ones.
Hasan: We should leave this place, Ms. Fikriye. If they catch us, my life would be in danger.
Fiko gives him a very searching look and then starts down the trail. He lets out a big sigh and follows.

Sadakat is talking to her henchies. Have you found her?
Henchie: No ma’am, not yet. We’re still looking. We are looking at another hotel. If she’s not here, she’s not in Mardin.
Sadakat: Find her before Cihan does. She probably knows I’m looking for her, ok?

Sadakat is thinking hard.

Cihan and Alya are still arguing while he is driving.
Alya: You can’t get yourself locked up so you can kill him. This must be a joke.
Cihan: Stop worrying. I’ll explain my plan. We’re almost there.
He veers off the paved road onto a dirt road.
Alya is still going on about how his plans are illogical. “You always fix things the same way.”
Alya tells him she is listening.
Cihan says: Let’s get some fresh air.
They are still arguing about his plan to get into Halis’s jail cell. He tells her he is trying to find Boran’s killer as well as the person who ordered his death, but that guy is hiding, which is why I must go to Halis. I have to find out if he did it, or to whom he gave his location.
Alya: Great, you’ll get him to talk. Cihan, he’s being released soon. His hearing’s in a few days. Let him get out and then interrogate him.
Cihan: That’s fine, but what if they act before I do? If Halis is released, I’ll never discover the truth. Can’t you understand that?
Alya: What if Halis did kill him? What will you do if you find out he killed Boran? Will you kill him right there?
Cihan looks away.
Alya: You won’t be an assassin.
The two stare intently at one another.

What a splendid recap. Babachita! I’m
So grateful for the detailed dialog. I missed some things.

I sure enjoyed the hug!

Will Alya’s mom really go to Hassan’s house? That’ll be interesting!

Maggie

lejos

I really appreciate the effort you put into your recaps, Babachita. You don’t miss anything. Your descriptions and asides are wonderful, too.

Who’s going to get to Halis first, Cihan or Sadakat? I’m thinking Halis conspired with Ecmel to kill Boran. His motive would have been to restart the feud between Albora and Baybars. He almost succeeded. Ecmel is going to find out he had his son killed. I wonder how he will take this news. This will make little Deniz more valuable.

Bold move on Hasan’s part, offering his home to Fiko.

That definitely was a pregnancy puke for Zerrin.

I’m getting tired of ChiAl’s impossible love. We are on Turkish ep 24 out of 27 in the first season. Maybe they are waiting for the season finale to finally give us a kiss. It better be good for making me wait so long.

Lejos

Yeah, Dondi, we need a kiss! Or maybe an almost kiss will be the season-end cliffhanger.

Thanks so much, Babachita for another great recap!

One thing I noticed was a mention of Nare getting a kidney. Pretty sure it was a partial liver from Ozkan.

I loved Sahin turning the tables on Sadakat. I was expecting his usual: just looking miserable and not firing back at her. He asked if she'd have given a body part to Zerrin, and Sada was shut right up.

Was this Syrian Hamada mentioned before? I have no memory of the Albora guys knowing he was somehow involved with Boran's killing.

We get to wait a bit longer for Demir's reaction to Zerrin's pregnancy. I'm thinking he could go one of two ways. He could be jealous that she had sex with Kaya. Or he could be pleased that he'll get control over an Albora baby.

Sadakat is the ultimate control freak. She has to know every single thing about everyone in her household. No one gets to keep anything back. And, when she finds it out, she uses it to manipulate or punish the person.

I REALLY want Fikriye to survive. Hasan finding her really cheered me up. He seems to be a nice man who's been steamrolled by his domineering sister his whole life. I believe Fikriye would be safe with him. And a romance is not out of the question. Just think about Sadakat's molten rage if this were to happen.

Again, Alya goes on and on. She just rants until Cihan can't take it anymore. And why does she say "they" are after Deniz? I'm not following how the latest reveal that the discovery about Boran's being in Toronto led to his death endangers Deniz.

lejos

Novelera, you are so right about the liver. I’m afraid my kpa sideline might be intruding again as there is a kidney transplant in the current plot right now. Thanks for catching it!

Babachita

lejos

In the English captions, they posted kidney once or twice instead of liver. I remember they made the same mistake in Bahar. They even made this mistake in the Turkish versions.

Could Hamada be the guy who stabbed Ecmel and saved Kaya and Kadir in prison? I don’t know if he was involved with Boran, but he was close to Ecmel before he turned on him. He might have information.

#65 – Part 1 of 4

We again see Alya and Cihan quarreling about his plan to go after Halis in prison. She sounds very worried and almost has a lump in her throat. Cihan notices, smiles, and asks if she’s worried about him. She denies it, of course, saying she just doesn’t want to be the wife of a killer. He assures her that he’s bulletproof. She isn’t laughing at this and says she’ll never forgive him if anything happens to him. He smiles and says that she can visit his grave should something happen and tell him she’ll ever forgive him so as to increase his suffering. Is it a deal?

Alya’s sense of humor is not there. She threatens him with taking Deniz and leaving. He responds that he doesn’t think she’s grasped that, if she leaves Turkey, those guys are going to pursue. He has to finish this. [Of course, she worries about losing him.]

Cihan meets with Kaya, Muzaffer, Kadir and Erol. They’re talking about Boran’s killer and mention Hamad. [Last time the subtitles said Hamada. Again, I’m confused. Are they saying Hamad killed Boran or does he just know who did?] It’s said that Hamad is back in Syria. They are looking for him. Erol has pictures of him circulating. Cihan says they have to get him alive. “They” will be trying to get rid of him. Kadir and Kaya want to go along with Cihan to prison, but he insists he’ll go alone. Kaya fears that, if Ecmel figures out what’s going on, he’ll have Halis killed. Cihan says that he plans to set fire to one of Halis’s warehouses.

Zerrin has been driven to a pharmacy to get a pregnancy test. Kaya, of course, just happens to be at that same spot with Kadir. Kaya gripes that Kadir has stopped, thinking it’s for food. Kadir gets indignant, asking if Kaya is saying that because he’s obese. Kadir asks a vendor for two bottles of water and, sotto voce, for a lamb kebab.

Zerrin comes out. Kaya approaches. She lies that she got something for a headache. These two have a hard time pretending everything’s fine.

Hasan brings Fikriye to his house, which he calls humble. She asks if he lives alone or does he have a wife and children. He says he never married. Fiko goes right for the bullseye: with a sister like Sadakat, it would be impossible. Hasan says that Sada is a good person. She’s suffered a lot over the years. Fiko spies a photo of Hasan with Halis. Hasan says that he’s a horrible person and he hopes that he rots in prison. He puts the framed photograph into a trash can. Fiko agrees with Hasan's assessment of Halis wholeheartedly.

#65 – Part 2 of 4

Hasan can’t locate what’s left of his coffee and goes out to buy some. Fiko calls Alya to assure her daughter that she’s all right. The translator verbally says that the contact's name on Alya’s phone is "Ignore her." Fiko, so perceptive, asks what name is Alya's phone for Fiko herself. She thinks it might be bad woman or witch. Alya doesn’t tell her. Fiko says that, whether it seems that way to Alya or not, she’s a mother. She hangs up.

Fiko strides around with her gun and points it at the photograph with Halis in it. “Who dares hurt my daughter will die!”

Yep, Zerrin gets the two pink bars on the pregnancy test and is crying. Demir bursts in because he heard her sobbing. Of course he grabs the test. Zerrin, tears rolling down her cheeks, says that yes, it’s positive. He grabs hold of her.

Mine gets more cramping. Sadakat just happens to be in that corridor and has the nerve to follow her and listen to what she says over her phone. She’s taking to her gyno. He tells her to go home and lie down. Mine turns, and the Albora gargoyle is at Yonca Hospital.

Demir has dragged Zerrin to his cousin, a doctor. Zerrin is furious, thinking the plan is for an abortion. Demir says he just wants her to have a checkup and that she’s pregnant.

Sadakat to Mine: “Are you pregnant?” Mine says that she is. And is it my son’s? The reply is that obviously it’s Cihan’s and there is no doubt. Does Cihan know? When Mine says he doesn’t, Sada gets that sneer on her face and says that Mine laid a trap. Mine denies this and says that the pregnancy was not planned. Then why haven’t you told him? Mine says she’ll be honest. She knows that Sada never approved of her nor liked her at all. Her son left her after so many years, and now she’s pregnant.

Sada says that she’s calculating, but now she’s glad she never got rid of her. [Sounds like she laid awake sometimes at night thinking about it.] If the baby is Cihan’s, do you think either me or my son would harm it? Mine says that, yes, Cihan is the father of this child. But Cihan is married. She doesn’t want to be a hidden away lover. She knows what would happen if it’s a girl, right? [Huh? What would happen? Does Mine think Cihan would send a daughter to an orphanage? Or force her to abort if that were the sex?]

Mine: But, if it is a boy, Cihan will have an heir. Isn’t that what you always wanted. This could be very convenient. Alya, do you think she’d want to stay with Cihan. She’ll ask for a divorce, and you would back that plan. I know I’m having a male child. I feel it in my bones. Sada asks when they’ll know the sex of the child. Mine smiles and says soon.

lejos

#65 – Part 3 of 4

[So, yes, Viewerville knows how badly Sadakat wants a male heir that isn’t related to Ecmel. But I don’t think she’s planning for Mine as a daughter in law.]

Nare senses something off between Cihan and Alya. Sada asks about Ozkan and hears there’s no change. Mine says she’s sorry. Nare gives her a “why are you here” look. Cihan outright asks why she’s in the room, and Sada says she called Mine. Why? Because she has something to say to them. Mine gulps and then stammers out something about the doctor saying Nare can go home tomorrow.

Zerrin tells Demir she has a baby inside her that’s not his. It’s Kaya’s child! And? She says they have to divorce. Do you think I’ll let you leave for a happy family beside that idiot and be alone here. Is that what you think? This is why I married you. I won’t let you leave. I’d rather die than think of abandoning you. Nadim has apparently been listening and puts on a fine example of male Mardin values. “Will you bring up Kaya’s bastard?” He sort of pushes Zerrin’s hand, and Demir erupts. He yells that his father respect Zerrin. Nadim says that, if she doesn’t leave, he’ll tell Kaya that the child is his. Zerrin runs out. Demir grabs his father and threatens to kill him.

Sada tells Kaya about Nare coming home the next day. After she leaves Kaya whispers to Cihan that his mother suspects they are hiding something. What will we tell her when you go to jail? Cihan replies that it was because we suspect that Halis killed Boran.

Alya has a meltdown about what Cihan is going to do. He asks why she’s behaving like a child. Why can’t we live like normal people? She yells that she doesn’t want killings for vengeance. Is that asking too much? Cihan replies that of course it isn’t. He asks her pardon but, from now on, no matter where you might go, there’s no safe place. She sort of slumps and says that she does know. Boran accepted it, and that’s why he recorded that video. He knew that they’d kill him. And that’s why Cihan accepted. He immediately insisted on their getting married. Cihan says that she’s right and he doesn’t regret doing so. We see him give a searching look at her face. But then he sort of backs away to say that he did what he had to do.

Alya wants to know what crime he’ll commit to get near Halis. He says that he’ll burn down a warehouse. When she turns away, aghast, he asks if she’d feel better knowing he’ll be burning down a warehouse with drugs inside.

Hasan comes in with food and sees Fiko looking very sick. She has a high fever. He’s going to call Alya. She points her gun at him to try to stop him, but Hasan calls anyway. He tells Alya that Fiko is in his house. He’ll send her the directions. She’ll be on her way with an ambulance.

One of Sada’s guys tells her that Fiko is in Hasan’s house. Stone faced, she replies that she’s on her way. Sada arrives, as usual, as fast as Batman. Alya gets into the ambulance with Fiko. Hasan knows he’s in for it.

#65 – Part 4 of 4

Sadakat is raving at poor Hasan for having Fiko in his house. When he reminds her that Fiko is sick, Sada says that’s a pretext. Did she spend the night? He couldn’t leave a sick woman in the street. [But his sister could.] She yells that she won’t permit a woman of her calaña (kind) to approach her brother. Are you trying to dishonor me? [Sada, the honor bus left without you a long time ago.] He keeps trying to defend himself, saying that she’s Alya’s mother. Did that sinvergüenza try to seduce you? In her condition? Control yourself. Sada finds the photo with Halis and insists he explain. He says he threw it away and doesn’t know how it’s there now.

Alya explains Fiko’s condition to Cihan. She asks if he’s leaving. Nare looks at the comatose Ozkan and hopes he’ll wake up and get better. She swears she’ll never be with Sahin again. As Nare walks out on Kaya’s arm she sees Sahin lurking. They walk past the room where Fiko is. Nare tells Mine not to keep following them around. Cihan: “Did you hear?” directed at Mine.

Sada pretends to need the bathroom so as to talk with Mine. She asks her if she’s bleeding. When told not, she asks for a favor. [If you’re pregnant with an Albora baby, you get asked nicely, I suppose.] She wants Mine to tell her who enters Fiko’s room. And to know who she speaks with on the phone. She nastily refers to her as the ex-con. [is she worried about Hasan visiting or what?]

Deniz is so happy to see Nare. Then he begs Cihan for some fútbol, saying Cihan had promised. A happy game ensues. Nare looks on from a car. Sahin plays. Deniz scores a goal between the legs of a goalie that I doubt is trying very hard.

After the game Alya begs Cihan to come home. But no. He says he doesn’t want her in court.

We see Cihan arrive at Halis’s warehouse. He pulls a gun on Halis’s guys and tells them to call the cops. He drives inside in a pickup with two huge drums of gas in the back. He opens them and drives around, whistling while he works, soaking everything. He sets it alight and stays watching way longer than I would have.

Some guy arrives to tell Sadakat that they’ve taken Cihan to the police station in Midyat. Alya has been out on the balcony thinking. Sada looks at her, but we don’t get the harangue tonight.

I’m finally caught up to the broadcast episode 18 from last night. I will make simple comments (short, no summary) if anyone wants to join me.
It’s a humdinger of a tale, easy to binge-watch.

Dondi has told us about it. The soundtrack is worth watching (listening) to and actors are really good.

Poder y traicion
Episode 18
My only dream

Seyran’s test scores are very good. Her only dream is to go to college. Sadly, her in-laws want her to produce an heir. Ferit tells them at the table that she’ll put off college and have a baby. “School for a wife is the home.”

Big fight. Ferit says he’s monogamous now so she needs to do her part.

Yusuf is a distant relative of Seyran or is passing himself off as one. He convinces Halis who hires him for staff.

Fuat is very interested in Suna. Will he divorce Asuman for a fertile wife? Abidin likes her, too. Suna seems meek but her inner wildcat appeared against Pelin.

Pelin lies to Ferit that she overheard Seyran still in love with Yusuf. Ferit jealous and angry.

I love the view of the water from the dining room. Kazim is creepy (father of S and S). Want to know more of Halis-Hattuc backstory. Sultan and Ifakat have power on different levels.

Novelera - super recap and I really got a kick out of your asides!

I don't understand what's in it for Halis. Money?

Hasan: Sadakat is a good person. Just no, Hasan.

The fire worried me. there's the dramatic scene of Cihan watching the fire he set. He's way too close! Also, the truck with its tank of flammable liquid is just a few yards away. And if the merch is indeed drugs, what is in the smoke he would be inhaling?

I don't get why Nare now thinks she has to stay married to Oskan.

The soccer game - the men play, the women watch. Sigh.

I liked the dynamic between Alya and Cihan - how he could tell she was not just worried about him, how she didn't like that he was going to be gone, even though she didn't admit it to herself.

lejos

Great summary, Novelera. I agree with Maggie: Sadakat not good, too much time with the fire for Cihan (maybe he didn’t inhale), and girls can play soccer! Ozkan maybe deserves some gratitude but that’s not a healthy marriage.

Thank you, novelera. Great asides as usual. Lol—" [Sada, the honor bus left without you a long time ago.]”

I enjoyed the opening ChiAl quarrel until Alya went the “I’m taking my son and leaving” route. So tired of hearing that.

“Sada says that she’s calculating, …. [Sounds like she laid awake sometimes at night thinking about it.]” I believe she does. She’s always around to spy or confront.

“[Huh? What would happen? Does Mine think Cihan would send a daughter to an orphanage? Or force her to abort if that were the sex?]” I believe they wouldn’t want to abort, but Mine knows what happens to females in this region.

Mine has become a Sada henchie.

I hated how Sada treated Hasan. He’s a decent guy.

The fútbol match was nice. I don’t have time to check the original but I bet it was longer and sweeter than what Telemundo showed us.

Lejos

Loved the “Albora Gargoyle” and “the honor bus left…” Had to admit I laughed out loud. That woman shows up everywhere, in every scene, an absolute pest. Thank you ladies for your hard work it means so much to those of us who are still learning Spanish! SaraAnne
