#70, aka, Ferit and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (apologies to Judith Viorst)
part 1
Slight rewind. Once again, Seyran has rejected Ferit’s advances. He’s losing patience. She heads downstairs. Breakfast prep is underway. Abidin is in the kitchen, Suna is setting a table out on the porch. And Asuman and Fuat are out on the grounds talking. Seyran notices that Asuman and Fuat are hugging. Great news! Ferit arrives outside in time to see this, too.
Fuat and Asuman are pelted with a snowball delivered by Ferit. He jokes, no one should be this happy so early in the morning and he takes an aiming stance. Fuat warns, this snowball will cost you, Ferit. Ferit is undeterred. The brothers gather up some snow. But Ferit turns and throws his snowball at Seyran and Suna, looking from the house. He tells them to come down. It’s Ferit Korhan against all of you! Hadi! Snowball fight ensues.
They edited the fight and a small bit of the snow tubing. Everyone has an enjoyable breakfast together afterwards. Ferit gets a call from “Sadik Bey”. He doesn’t take it.

Meanwhile, Zerrin arrives at the Korhan company. She tells the receptionist she’s here to see Halis Korhan. She doesn’t have an appointment, but it’s important. Tell him Zerrin Yilmaz is here.
Ferit brings coffee to Asuman and Fuat. They seem very happy. He asks them if they are planning something. Fuat says, we made a decision. But we need the family’s support, especially yours. Ferit says whatever you need. Asuman says, we decided to adopt a child. Ferit is surprised and I think, happy. Fuat says, it won’t be easy, and some in the house might be opposed. Asuman mentions Ifakat Fuat mentions Grandpa. Fuat adds, regardless, they have made up their minds.
Ferit thinks it’s great and he puts his arms around both. Congratulations! I love you both very much. You have my full support. Don’t worry about the family. He asks if they told the girls. Not yet, Asuman replies, we wanted you to be the first to know. Ferit says he’ll tell Seyran the good news. Ferit is very excited and can’t stop laughing—I’m going to be an uncle! Ferit Amca! [the one good thing for Ferit today.] Ferit goes inside.
The sisters are packing to leave. They both had a great time. Seyran says this was like a dream or a fairytale. In Antep, we couldn’t even go out on the street. And look where we are now. Ferit comes but doesn’t make his presence immediately known. He overhears Suna tell Seyro, in that case, start appreciating your husband more. I’m really surprised. He’s even managed to get along with Dad.
Ferit likes what he’s hearing. Seyran answers, yes, he’s a charmer and a people pleaser. And he’s cute, Suna says, and you love him, too. You love him so much. Just admit it. Ferit is smiling and about to enter the room. But he stops when he hears Seyran answer. That’s not enough, abla. No matter how much I love him, I just can’t trust him. Don’t say that, Suna replies, don’t be unfair. Look at all he’s done to get you back.
I can’t, Seyran says, it’s not working. Suna asks, what’s missing? Seyro answers, he’s trying to get closer, but… I can’t. She starts to cry. Suna tells her everything will be alright. Don’t pressure yourself. Give it time.
#70 part 2
Seyran explains, I can’t stop thinking about how I was forced to get married, about how he introduced me to his girlfriend and all the horrible things he’s put me through. I can’t forget them. I can’t get over it. You can’t imagine what I’ve put up with. I know what you’ve told me, Suna replies, and from what I can see, it’s very clear that Ferit loves you very much.
He loves everyone, Seyran says, that’s the problem. He’s unreliable and selfish. He can’t be trusted. It’s his nature. Asuman said that the key to love is trust. Do you think I can trust Ferit for the rest of my life? If someone ever told me that Ferit was cheating, I couldn’t defend him because deep down, I’d know they’re right. I can never trust him. it’s impossible.
Poor Ferit is getting an earful. Suna tells Seyran that was at the beginning. You didn’t get off to a good start, it’s true, but so what? Neither of you knew what you wanted. But now Ferit is leaving his past behind and wants to be close to you.
Let’s say we’re okay for a few days, Seyran replies, but then what? Most of the time, we hurt each other, the accumulated anger inside us comes out like crazy. Suna tells her to give Ferit a chance. Trust him this one time. You might be surprised. Why don’t you try? Seyran is reluctant. She doesn’t want to get her hopes up. I know he can never be faithful. I’m desperate for a solution but can’t find one. Put yourself in my place. Would you spend the rest of your life with a man you can’t trust?
Ferit starts to cry. He enters the room and says, then what do we do, Seyran? Suna excuses herself. Ferit says there’s no need. Your sister is being honest with you. She tells you everything. To her, I’m nothing but an unreliable, selfish, scoundrel. Suna leaves.
Ferit asks Seyran, what do you want from me? You say try. I’m trying. I’m not hiding my feelings from you either. You’re fixated on this idea of trust. What should I do? What about me? Do I have to give my life for you? What do you want?
Seyran wants to talk later. Ferit wants to talk now. He stops her from leaving. Why do I go to these lengths if you’re never going to trust me? Is it worth it? Be honest. Because I’m not going to live like this forever. Seyran really doesn’t want to talk about it now. He wants to know what she told Suna. Tell me to my face. What did you say?
Seyran hesitates. She says I’m looking for a solution to this but I can’t find one. Ferit asks why is it so difficult? It shouldn’t be that complicated for such a smart girl like you. If you can’t trust me for the rest of your life… if you think it’s torture to be by my side… then there’s no point in this. Let’s get divorced.
We get flashbacks. A Halis voiceover. “Life is a journey with a known beginning but a mysterious end. You can neither stop nor turn back.” It’s a review of Seyfer’s greatest hits… and misses. The song, Fırtınadayım, plays while we review. [It’s funny they show them sleeping cuddled in the mountain house but that was cut from the episode.] Ah, the airport kisses. The love cabin attempt that ultimately failed.
Then everything quickly rewinds back to this vacation and Ferit says, let’s end this, if that’s what you want. Seyran stares and says nothing. Ferit says, I asked you a question, answer me. Are we getting divorced? Should we end it? Seyran answers no.
Ferit asks what do you want then? There is no "let's get divorced," nor is there "let's not get divorced." Don’t be afraid, you won’t go back to your old life. Seyran answers, my fear is you returning to your old life. I can’t act like nothing ever happened. I can’t trust you infinitely.
#70 part 3
You’re not saying I can’t trust you right now, Ferit replies, you’re saying you can never trust. Why would you want to be with someone you can never trust? Seyran softens a bit. I didn’t mean that, she says, you are right. I exaggerated a little.
Ferit calls her out. That’s exactly what you meant to say, Seyran. These are your thoughts. You do not trust me. You are insecure. You are afraid of life. You look at our future through the lens of your past. Your dad scared you so much that you are afraid of life, people, yourself. All your insecurities stem from this. The problem here isn’t me, you are the problem, Seyran. So, think it over, consider it, and make your decision.
We see the others downstairs hearing this. A phone on the table is ringing. It’s Ferit’s phone. and it’s been ringing nonstop, from “Sadik Bey”. Fuat answers because he thinks it’s work related. He gets a funny look and he steps out.
Seyran looks out the window. Now what, Ferit asks, are you just going to stare out the window? I’m thinking, she replies, just thinking. She turns to face him. You’re right, she says, maybe… my insecurities and fears are from my childhood. But this has emerged today. You’re the one who caused this, Ferit. Don’t blame me, Ferit replies, don’t play the victim with me.
Fuat interrupts Seyfer. He tells Ferit they need to leave now. Looks like something bad happened at the company. Ferit answers, I’m sorry, but I’m busy right now. Fuat pointedly repeats, something bad happened at the company. We need to leave. Come on. It’s urgent. Ferit leaves and Seyran exhales.
Fuat takes Ferit outside. Ferit asks, what’s so urgent? Did you lie to get me out of there, so we wouldn’t argue? Fuat says, Sadik Bey was calling you. Be grateful I was the one who answered. And this is serious. Pelin’s mother is at the company.
Ferit panics. Just what I need… I’m sure she wants me. She didn’t come for you, Fuat replies, she came to see grandpa. I notified Betul and she will try to keep her out. Fuat and Ferit get in the Defender. Ferit entrusts the girls to Abidin and tells him to take them straight home.
Zerrin is waiting in a conference room. Someone brings her coffee. Betul enters. She tells Zerrin, Halis Bey is in a meeting that will take a while. So, I suggest… Zerrin interrupts, you told him I’m here, didn’t you? Betul says of course. Zerrin says she’ll wait.
Abi loads the luggage and the ladies head to the car. The sisters, walk arm in arm, by themselves. Suna asks Seyran if she’s okay. Yes, Seyran asks, do you think Ferit is right about my trust issues? Suna says this time she agrees with Ferit. How long can the boy wait? It must have been hard to hear you’ll never trust him.
Seyran calls her sister a traitor for not taking her side. Don’t say that, Suna replies, it’s time you did something, too. You should have already taken that step. I know, Seyran answers, he did stop seeing her. He’s making an effort so I should give him a chance.
At the car, Asuman asks Seyran to sit in the back with her. She whispers, we can gossip about our husbands and Abidin Bey won’t hear. Seyran agrees. Asuman gives Suna a wink. Abi smiles at Suna as he opens the car door for her.
Ferit is on the phone and furious with Pelin. Don’t tell me you didn’t know. Are you trying to drive me crazy? Pelin says her mom left in the morning without saying anything. She only called her later. I called you the moment I found out, she says. What else could I do? Ferit answers, you could have stopped her. Your mother will ruin everything! You know what she’s like, Pelo replies, she’s not easy to deal with.
#70 part 4
Ferit accuses Pelo of poisoning her mother’s mind. She went to see my grandfather, he tells her. Pelo admits she told her mom what happened. In the end, family is all I’ve got. I don’t have anyone else to support me. I’m sorry if she messes things up for you. Pelo hangs up on him.
Ferit calls it a nightmare. Fuat says Betul texted. Zerrin is still waiting to see Grandpa. Ferit wonders why Zerrin wants to see Halis. He declares, if Seyran finds out, I’m finished. I don’t understand you, Fuat says, didn’t you just ask her for a divorce? Ferit answers, those are two different things.
Would you really divorce, Fuat asks, then why did we take that trip? We had a great time. I changed my mind [on divorcing], so how is it that you might get divorced? It doesn’t work, Ferit replies, it’s not working. I can’t do it anymore. I’m tired of her contradictions, her lack of trust.
Fuat notes that Ferit doesn’t want to divorce but he’ll do it if that’s what Seyran wants. Ferit says, I have limits, too. I’ll get divorced. Rather than we both be unhappy, let me be the unhappy one.
Betul returns to Zerrin with apologies. I’m sorry, he still can’t see you. She offers more coffee. Zerrin replies, all I want is to speak to Halis Bey. When is his meeting ending? Betul says, it’s almost finished. I’ll check. Mehves passes by and hears some of this exchange. She enters the room. Betul? Who is she here to see?
Zerrin jumps in and introduces herself and says she’s there to see Halis. When can I see him? Mehves apologizes, sorry, only his friends and family can see him. What is your relationship to him? Zerrin replies, I’m close to his grandson Ferit. I’m Pelin Yilmaz’s mother. He’ll remember me when you tell him. Mehves says she will tell Halis immediately. She signals for Betul to leave and follows her out.
Mehves comes back and tells Zerrin she can see Halis now. Zerrin enters the office. Mehves goes to get coffee. Halis asks, what can I do for you? Zerrin begins, I am the mother of Pelin, a close friend of your grandson, Ferit. Halis thinks. Pelin? Ah, I remember her. She stayed at our house a few days. How is she now? That’s what I came to talk to you about, Zerrin replies. We see Halis listening, but we don’t hear anything that’s being said.
Ferit and Fuat arrive at the company. Betul is there. She says she did all she could to stop Zerrin. Ferit asks, where is she? Betul says she’s with Halis.
Halis tells Zerrin, from now on, call me if anything comes up, no matter what it is. You can be at ease. Zerrin thanks him. My daughter said you intervened. I was a little scared. I thought, “if Halis Bey is involved, it must be very serious.” You are her mother, Halis says, and you have every right, but that case is closed. From now on, no one will bother your daughter. Don’t worry.
Halis walks her to the door. Zerrin thanks him again for all he’s done. I came to see you without an appointment. You listened and gave me your version of events. I’m a mother and now I feel much better. He understands.
Zerrin has one last thing. I’ve been living in London with my husband for some time. You come up often in our conversations… with Nukhet… your daughter. Halis looks stunned. [oh, that violin music!] Zerrin continues, I can’t lie though, she doesn’t know much about you. Probably because you haven’t seen each other in a long time. But she always speaks of you with respect and yearning. What I’m trying to say is that she’s fine, so don’t worry.
#70 part 5
Zerrin holds out her hand to shake. Halis is frozen for a couple of seconds, then he takes Zerrin’s hand. She says, have a good day. He responds, Allah herkese iyilik versin (May Allah grant everyone goodness.) She answers, Amen. She’s done her damage and she watches Halis squirm as she pauses at the door before leaving. Halis tries to compose himself. He’s very upset.
Ferit and Fuat cross paths with Zerrin in the hallway. It’s a staring contest. I’d say Ferit loses. He squirms. [Apparently, Zerrin has this effect on people.] And here comes Kazim! Hey, damat. You’re here at this time to work? Ferit replies, oh, Kazim Baba… Kazim corrects him. We are at work, call me “bey”.
Zerrin calls Ferit’s attention back to her. Kazim takes a good look at Zerrin. Ferit welcomes “Zerrin Teyze”. She tells him, we need to talk. Ferit gives Fuat a “help me” look. Fuat asks Kazim if he’s all set up in his new office. Kazim is not ready to leave yet. He asks Ferit to introduce him to the lady.
Fuat thinks fast. Ah, she’s in finance. Ferit, you speak with Zerrin Hanim, I’ll treat Kazim Bey to coffee. Ferit tells Kazim Bey, there’s always work. I have something important to take care of. Kazim likes to hear that. I know, work is important, go, get to work. Ferit asks Kazim, what happened to your voice? Kazim answers, you sent me all the way up to the 38th floor. There was such a draft, and I caught a cold. [in the original, the Kazim actor’s voice is noticeably hoarse. I guess he really was sick, and they did some improv there.]
Ferit leaves with Zerrin. He looks like he’s headed to his death. Zerrin starts, I called to talk to you, but what did you do? You ran away, of course. Ferit explains, my brother had an urgent business matter and we had to go out of town because of this. I’m sorry.
Zerrin’s not buying it. Whatever. It doesn’t matter anymore, she says. I have your grandfather’s phone number now. If I have a question, I’ll call him directly. Ferit fidgets. He wants to take the convo outside the building. He asks, what did you discuss with my grandfather? Don’t worry, Zerrin replies, he doesn’t know about the disgraceful things you’ve done. He’s unaware of the filth.
Ferit begs, Zerrin Teyze… please don’t say… She jumps in—say what, Ferit? Who are you? What are you? Look what you’ve done to my daughter. How you make her suffer. That girl you married, she kicked my daughter out of your house. Did you even care? Weren’t you the least bit ashamed? You didn’t defend Pelin in the slightest! Did you ever value her?
Why are you saying this, Ferit asks, of course I care about Pelin. I took her to my house myself. Zerrin exclaims--bırak Allah aşkına! Please stop. Are you kidding me? You call that caring about my daughter? A person even helps a stranger on the street if they need it. That girl you married, who does she think she is? Who is she to pull my daughter’s hair? Ferit looks away.
#70 part 6
Zerrin asks, how about you, Ferit? Who do you think you are? I told you and Pelin from the very beginning. Your last name, your money, has no effect on our family! You can’t use your family’s influence to take advantage of her. I told you don’t you dare, or you’ll have to deal with me. My daughter is different from the others that chase you. I told you I’d upset you if a single tear fell from her eyes.
Zerrin continues, remember what you told me with tears in your eyes? You said, “Zerrin Teyze, I love your daughter. Nothing means more to me than her. We will get married eventually. I won’t let a single tear fall from her eyes. Please trust me.” Did you not promise me? Ferit answers yes. [Ferit has always indicated he was not serious about Pelin and Pelin knew this. Either he lied to Zerrin Teyze, or maybe the writers’ have revised history.]
So what happened, Zerrin asks. Look at where you both are. Do you know how that girl feels right now? This is the girl you loved and cared about so much and promised you’d never make suffer. She’s crying over you. She won’t stop crying.
All Ferit can do is mutter he’s very sorry. Zerrin doesn’t want to hear it. Save your “sorries”. I want you to do the right thing. Do you think anyone will love her after your relationship? Who can she trust? Who will she build a future with? You stole my daughter’s future. I told you from the beginning. My daughter is precious to me. Her future is more so. My husband and I gave her everything so she could have a good future. And what happened next? Ferit Efendi arrived and spoiled everything. But I won’t allow it. You’re going to pay for your recklessness. You won’t go on as if nothing happened.
Teary Ferit says, I really do want Pelin to be happy. She can be, Zerrin replies, you know when? When you get divorced. Things will start going well when you respect and appreciate my daughter and give her the rightful place she deserves. Keep your promise and do it quickly. I do feel bad for your wife though, because she’s somebody’s daughter, too. But leave your wife asap. And by the way, I’m staying here until you resolve this matter. I’m not returning to London. I’m staying with my daughter. That’s a warning. Zerrin leaves.
And we are out!
Thanks so much for the wonderful recap, dondi. And in the midst of Copa Mundial. That was a very impactful episode.
Ferit is right. If she can never fully love or trust him, better to divorce. Seyran keeps punishing him for how their marriage began, but she doesn't want to let him go either. She should listen to her sister. Possibly because of her feelings for Abi, Suna is on Ferit's side now.
I loved Asuman, having seen Abi and Suna together that night when she feared Suna was with Fuat, now arranges for Suna and Abi to sit side by side on the ride back to Istanbul.
Wow! Nukhet. Halis has a daughter that the devious Zerrin knows about? Wonder if she's older or younger than Orhan and his older brother, forget his name.
I didn't really understand what Zerrin and Halis were meant to have said to each other, presumably about Pelin and Ferit. I know we didn't hear it, but I did not expect it to end so amicably, at least until Zerrin dropped her bombshell.
Kazim looked like he was very interested in Zerrin. She'd chew him up and spit him out in no time.
Zerrin told Ferit the Korhan money means nothing to her. Riiiiiight. Somehow I doubt that.
Beautifully done, Dondi! Can’t wait to learn about Nukhet! Is she the reason for the conspiracy Ifakat etc made to protect them after Halis dies? Who is her mother? Lots to learn yet!
Zerrin is like a snake. Ferit is in for a hard time.
Asuman is great. Thankful for good characters.
I will start on #71. May not be for a few days. 😊
Babachita
Thanks, novelera and Babachita.
Lol, it’s not often that Ferit is right. Unfortunately, karma is coming around for him.
Yes, Babachita, Nukhet is the reason Orhan and Ifakat conspired. They were worried about “that woman showing up with her child” to make a claim on Halis’ estate.
Zerrin is a horror. She is too smart to go straight to Halis and demand that Ferit divorce and marry Pelin. They discussed the Serter incident. She flattered and thanked Halis. So, what’s the purpose of dropping the Nukhet bomb on him? It’s something that connects her to Halis. You are probably right, novelera. The Korhan money and power are important. And no way Kazim could handle a woman like Zerrin.
So bummed about Croatia. Luka Modric is one of my all-time favorite footballers. A brilliant midfielder and class act. Maybe this time FIFA wants CR7 to win a WC before he retires. I will enjoy it when he gets his butt kicked by the Spaniards fair and square. Let’s hope for a better ref in that game.
Dondi, Modric is my absolute favorite!!! I was heartbroken! I do enjoy Messi! These games are so exciting!!!

Golden Boy – Yali Capkini – Poder y Tracion
Episode 71 #1 of 7
“She Wants to get Closer”
Ferit is with Zerrin outside the Korhan building. Ferit struggles to tell her that he wants Pelin to be happy. She tells him that will only be when he gets divorced. Ferit looks surprised at this. Zerrin tells him that’s when everything will start going well, when he respects and appreciates her daughter like she deserves and then gives her her place. Zerrin tells him to keep his promise and do it quickly. She tells him she is sorry for Seryan because she is someone’s daughter, too, but she insists that he needs to leave his wife as soon as possible. She also tells him she is staying in Turkiye until he fixes this. She tells him he has been warned. Ferit is very impactado.
Halis is going through a box of memorabilia and takes out a postcard that is from England. He is thinking to himself: I know this is a pain that stems from the past. Though you try to pin it down in time, it will always resonate in my ears like a massive pang of remorse. Even though I am afraid to remember, I know that I will never forget you.
He turns the card over and reads: Grandpa, I love you very much.
Halis turns the card over and over and sighs deeply before putting it back into the box, which he then puts into a cabinet.
At the yali, Gulgun cheerfully comes into the living room telling Ifakat that she just spoke with Asuman and that they are on their way. Everything is fine! She asks Ifakat if she actually expected them to divorce after their first fight. Fights happen in all families. Ifakat tells Gulgun she wishes they really were a family. Gulgun tells her that’s what they are.
Gulgun: If, to you, a family means having children, then you are truly confused, Ifakat.
Ifakat: Easy for you to say. You don’t know what it means in this house to be a childless woman. And you never will know. If that marriage continues, Asuman will suffer even more.
Latif joins them and wants to discuss ordering supplies. He reminds Ifakat she brought something special for Mr. Halis. (This is because Halis has given him the job of running the place, taking Ifakat’s place. She is obviously being of as little help as possible.). Gulgun is listening intently. Ifakat tells him there’s a list somewhere, but she doesn’t know where. If she finds it she will send it to Sultan.
Latif stares at her. Ifkat suddenly “remembers” that Halis should get a general checkup. He should call the doctor. Then she asks: You haven’t forgotten, have you?
Latif tells her he will reach out to the doctor.
Ifakat continues laying it on: And by the way, we need a general cleaning. The kitchen and pantry need to be disinfected before the shopping is done. Have you made an appointment with the cleaning company?
Latif assures her he has it on his list of things to do.
Ifakat: I hope so, but from here, you could’ve fooled me.
Gulgun signals Ifakat to tone it down.
Ifakat: The responsibilities are piling up every day, Gulgun. (This gets a rise out of Gulgun.) I get why you’ve never been interested in these things, but I’ve given my life to this house and family.
Latif: As have I, so you ought not worry. If anything goes wrong, I’d be responsible. While you ran this house, I was by your side. I’ve done this job before, so don’t try to make me look bad.
Ifakat: Don’t try me, Mr. Latif. Everything you’ve done up to now is because Mr. Halis or I have asked you to. You’ve forgotten to take initiative because you’ve been taking orders for years. (Gulgun makes more faces at this attack.) Or, can you make decisions on your own? If nobody tells you what to do, you will make mistakes.

Episode 71 #2 of 7
Latif stares at her and then turns slowly, with a preoccupied expression on his face. He leaves the room.
Gulgun: Why’d you have to talk to him like that? Why’d you hurt him?
Ifakat: It’s only temporary. He needs to know his place here.
At the Korhan office, we see Kazim hitting the bell on his desk to call someone. He is obviously enjoying his new position in the company. In response to the bell comes Behlul, with coffees. Fuat is there as well. Kazim doesn’t know her, so Fuat presents them to one another. He tells her his father should have already spoken about her. She was Halis’s assistant for some years.
Kazim: Really? Very good. It’s nice to meet you madam. Is she Mr. Orhan’s assistant?
Fuat: That’s right.
Kazim: So, she’s an assistant, not a secretary.
Fuat: An assistant, yes.
Kazim: What does an assistant do? Aren’t they like secretaries? What is the difference?
Behlul is standing there listening to this interchange, after first being looked over by Kazim.
Fuat: The difference, sir, is that assistants…
Fuat struggles to answer this, and Kazim quickly loses interest: Whatever, it doesn’t matter.
Kazim: Dear [!!!], I want you to treat me how you treat Mr. Orhan, alright? [Respect is something earned, I’m thinking!]
Behlul gives Fuat a look and then tells Kazim: Of course, sir. May I get you anything else?
Kazim grins at this: Yes, yes. Give me a second. I want one of these folders. This says ”Halis Korhan,” but mine should say “Kazim Sanli.”
Fuat frowns but nods at Behlul.
Kazim adds: Plus, a sign that reads “Kazim Sanli” with an “S.” Don’t forget, OK?
Behlul smiles: Of course.
Kazim: And if Mr. Halis is in his office, I’ll visit him in five minutes.
Fuat’s eyebrows go up again, and he chews on his lip.
Behlul: Today, he’s very busy, but I’ll let you know if some space opens up.
Kazim: What? All day? He doesn’t have five minutes? Tell him. I’m sure he’ll agree to see me.
Behlul: He’s in a meeting right now, but I’ll try.
Kazim, eyes rolling: Really? Then I’d like to speak to Mr. Orhan. Where is he?
Behlul: With Mr. Halis. But I’ll try to let him know as well.
Kazim: Don’t do it. If you try to do it, you might mess up. Do what I say. You’re excused, Ms. Behlul.
Behlul looks at Fuat for confirmation, then nods at Kazim and leaves.
Kazim swirls around in his swivels chair, clearly enjoying his new office. Then he hits the bell again: Unbelievable, the coffee spilled onto the dish! She can’t even serve coffee properly. Don’t you interview these girls before hiring them? This company needs order. How has it made so much money? I don’t understand it.
Halis is sitting at his desk (not in a meeting) looking over some account books. There is a knock on his door and Ferit enters. He asks if Halis is busy.
Halis: Come here and sit down. (Halis gives a large sigh.) Now tell me, what did you do?
Ferit struggles to answer: Fuat and Asuman made up. Everything’s fine now.
Halis: I’m glad. Your friend’s mother was here today. Did you see her when you came in?
Ferit: Yes, we ran into each other in the hallway. Did she come to thank you?
Halis: We talked awhile. (Halis starts thrumming the desktop with his fingers.)
Ferit watches this, as Halis thrums even harder.
Halis: She did come to thank me, yes, but I noticed something very odd about that woman. It’s almost like her motivation for coming here was different. What do you think?
Ferit: Uh, I don’t know, Grandpa. If I had something to tell you, I would have. Ms. Zerrin’s just like that.
Halis: Mmm hmm. (More thrumming.) Just think about it. Do you have something to tell me? I’m asking now because if something goes wrong later …

Ferit: No, Grandpa, she was worried about her daughter. That’s why she came. We’ve all been through a lot lately. If she came to speak to you, it was to put her conscience at ease.
Halis sighs heavily: If you say so. All I care about is knowing what I need to know first. As long as there’s nothing that gets you in trouble. OK?
Ferit: OK, Grandpa. Thank you.
Halis: Hand up in a friendly gesture: You’re welcome. Now go do your job.
Ferit stands: See you, Grandpa.
Halis: Ahh, I asked Sadik for some records and he hasn’t delivered them. Find out what’s going on.
Ferit: I will, Grandfather.
As Ferit leaves, he looks very impactado and a little bit relieved.
Halis is thinking hard as he watches him leave.
Ferit walks very slowly down the hall. He hears Seyran in his head: You’re right. Maybe my insecurities and fears are wounds that come from my past. (In a washroom, Ferit washes his face and looks in the mirror.). But it’s you who made them come to light, Ferit.
He hears his side of the conversation as well: If you don’t know, how will we live the rest of our lives together? We’ll do what you want, Seyran. We’ll get divorced and end this, OK?
Ferit is leaning on the washroom wall, in obvious pain, as he remembers this. He hits his chest over and over.
He hears Zerrin: You robbed my daughter of her future, so you’re going to do what’s necessary. You can’t leave and act like nothing happened, you hear me?
Ferit lifts his phone to make a call. He tells whoever answers that it’s urgent that they meet. I can’t go. You have to come here. (This means it is Pelin.)
In the attic suite of the yali, Seyran and Suna enter. Seyran says they need to air out the room. She opens the door to the balcony. Seyran coughs. Back in the room, she sniffs the bedcovers. Suna asks what she’s doing. Seyran wonders if the didn’t change the comforter.
Suna: Something’s not right, Seyran. Tell me what’s wrong? Now you are blushing. What’s going on?
Seyran looks up and smiles: I think it’s going to happen. It’s going to happen tonight.
Suna: What? What’s going to happen, Seyran?
Seyran can’t find the words to answer. Finally she tells Suna she finally wants to sleep with Ferit.
Suna laughs: What are you saying? I don’t understand.
Seyran asks her what else could she be talking about. After some more of this, Suna finally gets it! Seyran tells Suna she can’t yell about this.
Dicle knocks and brings in her luggage. Seyran asks her if she could change the bedding. Dicle tells her they just changed them, but she tells her she can do it again, if she wants. Seyran thanks her.
After she closes the door, she asks Suna if she thinks Dicle knows what is going on. Suna says of course not.
Suna tells her to relax. She doesn’t have to do anything. Seyran tells her she thinks she needs to do this because she is ready. She is giddy trying to make sense.
Seyran: I feel like my heart’s going to leap out of my chest. I don’t know what to do!
Suna reassures her. She is there with her. She tells her first she needs to calm down. This shouldn’t scare her. If she relaxes, everything else will be fine.
Seyran: And how would you know? Look who I’m asking!
Seyran then gets nauseous. She runs to the restroom.

Episode 71 #4 of 7
Orhan and Defne are walking along the water. He asks her what she is trying to do. She tells him nothing, with a little smile.
Defne: You used to love walking in places like these and stepping on the grass. [I snicker at this, because her heels will sink into the grass if they were to walk on it!]
Orhan: In this weather?
Defne: What’s that go to do with anything? Does the weather determine your mood?
Orhan: Of course not.
Defne: Come here.
Orhan sighs but follows her to sit on the grass looking at the water. She tells him not to worry, it’s not wet. She has to encourage him several times before he sits down. She tells him it’s like old times. He finally smiles a bit and sits next to her.
They sit awhile and he starts to laugh and she responds.
Orhan: How many times did we sit on the grass at university? We’d talk a lot.
Defne: We can, again. We’re not enemies. We could never be. You know that very well.
Orhan: I know.
Defne: Look, if you’re worried about Efe, I’ll talk to him. I can convince him.
Orhan: I know.
Defne: Good, then what’s the problem? What’s wrong?
Orhan takes a big sigh: My father. The kids. My family. All that.
Defne: You’ve handled that very well. You’ve done the best you could. Please don’t be so hard on yourself.
Orhan: It’s not enough. I can’t anymore.
[I love seeing some Istanbul cats walking behind them.]
Orhan: Things are always out of my control.
Defne: Maybe it’s because life is out of our control. You can’t live thinking that life is a constant battle. I mean, you can, but that wouldn’t be right. Just take a deep breath and exhale.
Orhan: It’s the only way I know.
Defne: That’s not true. You’ve just forgotten. We used to run in the morning and you’d slip out of the house in the afternoon. (Orhan smiles, remembering.) We’d walk the beach for hours. I still do those things. You could too. Orhan, you only live once. It’s up to you to take advantage of your opportunities. Worry about your family, sure, but you need to live your life the best you can. (She takes a big sigh.). Because it’s your life. She takes his hand and smiles at him.
Orhan waits awhile. Then she removes her hand.
Back up in the attic, Seyran is making silly faces. Suna is reading up on couples on her phone.
Suna: It says here that couples should be ready at the same time. The problem here is nobody could be more ready than your husband. [This made me laugh out loud!]
The girls laugh at that. Seyran asks to see Suna’s phone. Suna tells her it’s not something she can learn from the internet.
Seyran: If he realizes how excited I am, I’ll be embarrassed. Look how I blush just thinking about it.
Suna: You’re so sweet. [“Tierna” is such a lovely word that doesn’t translate perfectly into English!].
Seyran: What do I do if Ferit figures out how excited and nervous I am? What do I do?
Suna: The more I tell you to calm down, the more nervous you get. Should we talk to Asuman? Seyran: We can’t do that without telling her that we haven’t done it in all this time.

Suna: You’re right. We can’t talk to anyone.
There’s a knock at the door. It’s Dicle with new linens for the bed.
Before she can do the sheets, Seyran asks if they should vacuum. Suna tells her not to forget to clean everything with vinegar. Seyran makes a face. Suna is laughing at all of this.
Dicle says they did all that that morning. She asks if she did something wrong. Seyran tells her no, but that sometimes she is a clean freak.
Suna: Seyran is very meticulous, that’s all. (Suna continues laughing at all this!)
Seyran tells Dicle they will do it together. Suna says she is going to change and will be right back. Seyran tells her it’s OK but to hurry back.
Ferit is sitting at his desk looking at the perpetual swinging balls (that demonstrate the conservation of momentum, according to DH) on his desk.
He gets a phone call from Sadik and answers. He tells Sadik that he is going to the bathroom and will be back. He tells him he will finish up the folders before he leaves.
Sadik makes a frustrated gesture and continues to look at what he’s working on. Ferit goes into the parking garage where Pelin is waiting for him. He gets into her auto and tells her to go ahead, he is listening. Pelin asks what is going on. She doesn’t understand.
Ferit: Well, you told your mother everything. Now I want you to tell me.
Pelin: Is that why you asked me to come? This could have been a phone call.
Ferit makes the “no” gesture: I want you to look me in the eyes and tell me everything. It’s not like I did this alone. Did I pressure you into doing it? Did you have nothing to do with it? Your mother showed up to kick my behind. Why did you have to tell your mother about our private business? Should I have done the same: Ms. Zerrin, Pelin did this and that. Would you have liked that?
Pelin: What could I do, Ferit? Don’t you get that I’m alone? Nobody’s on my side anymore. She’s my mother. Who else do I have other than my parents? You? Of course I told her. She’s worried about me. What could I do?
Ferit: Even if you’d done nothing, you should have never let her come here and speak to my grandfather.
Pelin: I couldn’t. You know my mother and what kind of woman she is. She does whatever she wants.
Ferit: So then you know what she’s thinking.
Pelin: I do. She wants you to leave Seyran and marry me.
Ferit: You two must be crazy. This is insane, Pelin.
Pelin: I didn’t say anything. I didn’t ask my mother to do it. She spoke and I kept quiet. I kept quiet with my mother and with you too. But I’ve had enough. This silence is suffocating me and I can’t breathe. Why can’t either of you see that? Why not think of me for once? I have feelings too. I’m not well. I haven’t been well since you came into my life. If you’d never existed, I might’ve been a happy woman. But I’m not. And the truth is, I don’t know if I ever can be again.
Ferit: Look, Pelin, we’ve both been through a lot. What happened, we did together. You can’t ask me to answer for the past.

Episode 71 #6 of 7
Pelin: You’re right. I shouldn’t ask you to answer for the past. But I will for my future. (Ferit makes a face.). You robbed me of any chance for a future. Despite all your mistakes, I always thought you’d spend the rest of your life with me, Ferit. But where are we now? You want to live with your wife as if none of this ever happened, right? And what am I doing? Suffering and crying. While you laugh and have a good time with your wife. I’m here, devastated. Tell me, do you ever stop to think of me? Do you ever care about what I’m going through? I told you I was going to Ismir and you told me not to. You said I’d always be yours, that you’d fix everything. But what did you fix, Ferit? Your wife complained and everything between us was over. Is it that simple? I gave you all I had, you get it? I gave up my family, everyone. What did she do? What did she give you? What did she have to give up for you? How could you have changed so much? How can you reject everything we experienced together? (Ferit is holding his head.) I couldn’t have loved a bas*ard like you.
Ferit: Look, you’re saying things you’ll regret.
Pelin: No. I won’t. Thanks to you, I regret enough as it is. Get out of the car. Get out of the car, Ferit. Listen, I came here because I thought I could help you with my mom, but you called just to admonish me again. As always, you’re irresponsible as ever. I’m the only one to blame. You’re innocent. But I don’t care anymore. Do whatever you want. Deal with my mother yourself. Whatever you two do, I don’t care, you understand? Get out of the car!
Ferit: Fine, but calm down first.
Pelin: Will you please get out, Ferit?
He looks impactado but finally gets out of the car. He slams the door gently. She drives off with tires squealing. He rolls his eyes and walks back into the building.
At the yali, Seyran is trying on different nighties. She has a black one that she’s holding in front of her mirror. She looks happy enough at the thought. There is knock on the door, and she panics, but it’s Suna. Suna laughs to see the nighties. Seyran tells her she doesn’t know what to wear that evening. She asks Suna’s advice, long or short, what color? Suna looks them over. Suna tells her she doesn’t think it matters because you’re going to take it off anyway. Seyran gives her a little slap and tells her not to make fun of her. Seyran tells her that her turn will come, and then she will come knocking at her door.
Seyran: You’ll tell me, please open the door. Be the light that shines the way for me. You’ll see!
The sisters laugh and keep making jokes.
Suna: When were kids, we used to say that I was going to get married first and I’d be the one to talk to you about it, remember?
Seyran: Yes, and I’d say I was never getting married.
Suna: Look, this is nice. You have a husband who loves you. Besides, now it’s not forced. You’re accepting the marriage now. You’re very much in love.
Seyran: I don’t know.
Suna: What? You keep saying you don’t know. You’re such a liar!
They hug each other affectionately.
Seyran has another thought: What if I don’t know what to do? I’m kind of embarrassed. And I’m scared and I don’t know what to do.
Suna takes her head in her hands: Oh, sister, Look. He’s your husband, you’re in love with him and he loves you too. There’s nothing bad about it. You don’t need to be embarrassed because this is what you want, OK? You have reason to worry, and I’m not telling you not to, but when you let Ferit know what your intentions are, he’ll do the rest.
Suna laughs! She tells her everything will be fine.
It’s evening, and Seyran is sitting on her bed waiting. Ferit walks in with several folders from work.

Seyran: Welcome home. You’re home late.
Ferit: I had a lot of work, as you can see. You should have gone downstairs. The table’s set.
Seyran: I wanted us to go downstairs together.
Ferit: Why? So it won’t look like we’ve fought?
Seyran: They know we fight all the time, Ferit. That’s not important. Everyone knows.
Ferit: It’s not important? Sure, you’re right. It’s natural for us. If we didn’t fight it would mean something was wrong. Listen to yourself. You don’t even care about his anymore. Anyway, do you have an answer to the question I asked you today? Did you make a decision?
Seyran looks down.
Ferit: Well, are you going to tell me, Seyran?
Seyran: No.
Ferit: No? Let’s get divorced. Or not? OK. Keep thinking about it. You still have time. I know it’s a tough question. The process is easy, or it might be hard for you. It’ll be good or bad. There are many aspects to it, right? Don’t be scared. This is your home. Think about it.
Ferit paces around the room as he is talking.
Seyran stands: Ferit, I don’t want to fight anymore.
Ferit: You don’t want to fight?
Seyran: I…. She starts to tell him, but he keeps asking her what, that she finally gives up and looks down again.
Ferit: Again, you have to answer for me.
He goes to change in the bathroom. She sighs. Her face is crestfallen. All her dreams for the evening are dashed.
Downstairs, the family is eating dinner. Suna is making funny faces at Seyran, thinking she knows what is happening. Ferit sits with his head resting on his fist. Seyran looks impactada.
Orhan gets a text from Defne saying she is going jogging in the morning and asks if he is in. He smiles and puts his phone in his pocket. Gulgun notices that he looks happy, telling him how wonderful that is to see. She asks if there is good news? He tells her it’s work. He hadn’t had a chance to check his phone earlier.
Fuat: Now that everyone is in a good mood, we’d like to discuss something important with you. Ms. Sultan, could you give us a moment?
Sultan takes the servers out of the room, leaving only the family.
Fuat: First, I’d like to apologize again for what happened the other night, especially to my beautiful wife. Don’t worry, though. That wasn’t important. We’ve moved on. In fact, even though it was only one day, being away from home did us good.
Seryan is smiling now, and Ferit notices.
Fuat: We’ve made a decision. Asuman and I have decided to adopt a child.
Ifakat gives them a dirty look. Orhan manages a smile of sorts. Seyran is grinning and so is Ferit. Gulgun looks happy. Suna is smiling.
Fuat: We wanted to share the news with all of you before talking to Grandfather.
Orhan: Congratulations. But you shouldn’t tell your grandfather yet. For now, I don’t want him knowing.
Ifakat: I agree. A lot has happened. His heart couldn’t take it.
Asuman: Heaven forbid! Do you think it’s bad news?
Ifakat: No, it’s not, but even so, …
Fuat: Even so, what? What? Can’t you support us for once?
Ifakat: This has nothing to do with supporting you. Some things are possible and others are impossible. You know that. If you’re going to tell him, let him rest for a few days.
Asuman looks crushed, Gulgun is sad. Seyran is pensive.
Seyran: I’m glad for you two.
Ferit: You know you have my unconditional support, brother. If you like, we can go tell him right now.
Gulgun: So soon? It’s obvious that you recently decided this. Think about whether it’s a good idea. You ought to weigh the pros and cons. Being a parent isn’t easy.

Ferit: Why does it have to be hard, Mom? They’d have the support of everyone at home.
