Golden Boy – Yali Capkini – Poder y Traicion
Episode 98 #1 of 7
“It’s Not My Fault”

We start with Ferit asking Pelin why she is staring at him. When she doesn’t answer, he rudely asks her again, telling her to answer. Ifakat and Pelin stare at him; Fuat, Gulgun, and Orhan are also in the room. Then he tells Pelin to get out. He tells her he has private matters to discuss with his family and emphasizes that she is not a part of the family. “Get out!” he insists. She doesn’t move, and he gets in her face asking if she didn’t hear him. Then he tells Gulgun to get her out of his sight. He reaches to grab her arm, but Orhan stops him. He yells at all of them. Ferit: Nothing I say matters to you hypocrites. You’re all responsible for my misery. Look at me! Why am I doing this, Dad? Tell me why? So you can bear witness to the fruits of your labor.
Ferit smiles his sarcastic smile throughout this tirade.
Ferit: Take a good look at me, Dad. What you’re looking at is the result of what you’ve done to me.
Orhan looks very concerned and goes to Ferit: I know it hurts right now, but it will pass.
Orhan tries to touch Ferit to comfort him, but Ferit yells: It won’t pass. I didn’t ask for anything! I didn’t even agree to get married or divorced because I can’t make up my mind on my own! I didn’t want any of this, Dad! Why can’t I ever make my own decisions? Why? Why does everyone else get to have what they want, but not me?
Ferit throws the bottle he has been holding down, where it breaks on the floor.
Ferit: You’re driving me mad!
Fuat: Stop, Ferit!
Asuman: Fuat, let him alone. He’s drunk and acting pathetic. Ferit, look in the mirror before coming here to throw your temper tantrums. You’re not upset at us; you’re upset with yourself. You blame us, you blame Seyran, but what about you? You think you’re a victim? That you never make mistakes or hurt others, right? You think you’re completely blameless in all this?
Ferit smiles at his sister-in-law. Orhan is very concerned. Ferit smiles and slowly walks out of the room.
Ifakat tells Pelin she should go home. Pelin tries to argue, but Ifakat calls Carlos to take her. Pelin asks everyone’s pardon and walks away. [Zerrin will probably be upset that she left, IMHO]
Everyone is very impactado.
Ferit slings open his door. He has another bottle. He is making sarcastic smiles again. He takes a swig and then laughs. He tries to call someone on his phone and throws it aside when there is no answer.

FLASHBACK: Somewhere outdoors, Ferit angrily asks Pelin why she didn’t tell him about his grandfather. She tells him they called her. It wasn’t her idea to go. Ask your aunt or grandfather. They’re the ones who called my mother.
Ferit: My aunt. I’d love to find out how your mother knows everything about Seyran. Could the two of them have manipulated everything?

FLASHBACK #2: Up in their room, Seyran tells Ferit: I don’t understand how you could tell that woman everything?
Ferit: I haven’t said a word, Seyran.
Seyran: Enough. Stop lying to me.

Back in the present, Ferit sinks to his usual place at the foot of the bed with his bottle.

FLASHBACK #3: Ifakat tells Ferit: I’m very suspicious of these people, Ferit. I wouldn’t put anything past them.
Ferit: Like what?
Ifakat: Like marrying off Seyran, for example.

FLASHBACK #4:
Ferit, on the phone: Congratulations, sister-in-law. You’re found a suitor. We’ll finally be rid of you.

Back in the present, Ferit continues to laugh as he tries to put the pieces together of this puzzle.

FLASHBACK #5: Ferit meets with Suna on a bench. She tells him they are going to marry Seyran to Mr. Saffet’s grandson after she divorces him.

Back in the present, Ferit continues laughing. He tells himself it was never his fault: I didn’t do anything wrong. It’s everyone else’s fault. He is now crying. He fiddles with his wedding ring.

Seyran is lying in bed. She asks Suna to charge her phone. Suna notices that Ferit has called and has left a bunch of texts. She tells her he must be worried and she should let him know she’s OK. Seyran thinks about it but puts the phone down and tells Suna she is not OK. She wishes she could run away somewhere no one would find her and forget about all this.
Suna hits her with some reality: Yeah, and wallow in your misery, right? You think that running away will ease the pain you’re feeling? Well, you’re wrong. The only way you’ll resolve this is by having a civilized conversation with him like two adults. Why can’t you understand that? At least text him and let him know you’re fine. He must feel awful.
Seyran: Yeah, that’s exactly what I should do. I’m not crazy.
The door opens suddenly, and Saffet Junior enters: Hi ladies.
Suna: Sure, come on in.
Junior: Sorry, I was looking for my fiancée. I know you’re stressed, but my mother’s still waiting in the living room. Check out these, my love.
He shows some pictures to Suna of wedding tuxedos. These even include a black Scottish kilt with accessories. He shows them to Seyran also. Junior is so excited about the wedding. He tells Suna he will wear the one she chooses.
Suna: I don’t care about your tuxedo, Saffet. Wear what you like.
Saffet laughs it off: Seyran, your sister’s so sensitive. Look, darling, these are for you.
He shows her some VERY high heels in white. She shrugs. He tells her he bought two pair in case one breaks. He asks her to guess the size. 36.5, he tells her.
Seyran: Let’s go to the living room. They are waiting for us.
Suna: Sure, let’s get out of here.
Saffet is surprised: What?
The girls leave, and Saffet nearly opens Suna’s closet, but thinks better of it. [Very interested in clothing and shoes, it seems!]
The girls enter the living room. Tarik notices and asks Seyran if all is well. He tells her she looks much better.
Kazim: Come in and sit down. Don’t just stand there. We’ve been waiting for you. Seyran, don’t trouble your fiancé. Please tell him you’re alright.
Tarik offers to call a doctor. She tells him she is fine, thank you.
The brothers sit and look at their fiancées. Kazim expounds: That’s excellent.
Nazan and Hattice enter the room.
Nazan: Mr. Saffet?
Saffet Aga and Nazan exchange glances and nods, as if asking permission to speak.

Episode 98 #3 of 7
Nazan: Mr. Kazim, I’ll be very honest with you. Your daughters are quite rude. We came here and they’ve shown us zero hospitality, let alone respect. They must have forgotten that I’m to be their mother-in-law.
Seyran and Esme exchange glances.
Hattice: Seyran is ill and Suna’s looking after her, and we’ve treated you like a queen. I served you chai tea and then offered you a cup of coffee, so watch what you say. [I love it when Hattice gets her dander up!]
Nazan: Am I wrong? Just look at their faces. (Suna’s rolling her eyes.) The oldest one hates the idea of getting married and your younger is all broken up about divorcing her ex.
Kazim: What are you talking about, ma’am? You’re mistaken. They’re good girls, make no mistake about it. They’ll have no problem tending to you or your sons.
Hattice sighs heavily.
Saffet Aga: Let’s hope so. Regardless, I’ll make sure that Nazan shows them our customs and traditions so they learn to be good wives. [Hoo Boy, that’s going to be such a house of joy!]
Kazim: Of course they’ll learn. My girls are very smart, so don’t worry. In fact, they’ll set the table. Go on, show everyone what you’re capable of.
Esme and daughters leave the room.
Kazim: Ma’am, we’re family now, OK? There’s nothing we can’t fix. Girls, bring the dessert before we have dinner.
Hattice looks concerned and Tarik holds Junior back from jumping up exuberantly.
Kazim: Come on, you tend to your fiancés.
Wise Hattice is very concerned, with a face like a thundercloud.

At the yali, Ferit slowly works his way, inebriated, down the stairs from the attic. Ifakat catches him on the landing. She asks where he is going in his condition. He tells her in a pitiful voice that he is going to see if Seyran is alright, that he can’t stop thinking about her. He says all he wants is to know how she is doing. Ifakat tells him no way and to go back to his room.
Ferit: I mean it, I just want to know if she’s OK. I promise not to do anything bad. I’ll come right back.
Ifakat: I said no. You’re drunk and can’t go out like that. You won’t remember it in the morning.
Ferit: I’ll remember! I can never forget Seyran. Why can’t you understand that? I’m seeing her despite your objections, so stay out of my business and leave me alone.
Ifakat looks about, concerned that his voice is getting louder. With good reason, it turns out.
Halis: Ferit! Come here!
Ferit: You’re here.
Gulgun and Orhan come running in.
Ferit: Grandpa, I…. May I please go see Seyran. I need to see her.
Halis: I told you to come here.
Ferit slowly approaches Halis: Please, Grandpa. I’m begging you.
Halis, angrily: What is this? Have you lost your mind? Today you told me you were in love with the other girl and I accepted it. I thought that’s what you wanted. What happened? Were you just messing with me?
Ferit: Grandpa, please don’t be mad at me.
Halis: Be quiet! You made your choice, and we have a reputation to maintain, and you will not break your promise. You proposed to that woman of your own free will, so what is it that you’re doing right now?
Orhan: Dad. Let me look after him.
Halis: You had your chance, Orhan. Ifakat, Gulgun, don’t let him continue making a mockery of everything.

Episode 98 #4 of 7
Ferit: But, Dad, I’m not mocking anyone.
Orhan: Of course not, son.
Halis: You keep talking! Latif, tell all our guards that this spoiled brat is not to leave the house.
Latif: As you wish, sir.
Halis: Orhan, take his phones away from him and lock him in his room. Never ignore what I say, boy! You hear me? You don’t want to go against me. Put a guard at his door to watch him. He is not to communicate with anyone.
Halis leaves, and Gulgun and Orhan flank Ferit. Orhan tells him to come with them. Ferit pulls away from them and walks away. Even Ifakat looks concerned. She tells Latif to take him to his room immediately. Orhan holds him by his head and tells him to listen. He tells him to please accept everything Halis has said, and not to leave his room. He tells him to behave and not to disrespect his family.
Orhan, earnestly: Please son, stop humiliating yourself and us. Go to your room, go on.
Gulgun: Don’t cry, son. Go upstairs.
Latif follows Ferit up the attic stairs.
Latif, fondly: Mr. Ferit, why don’t you rest? It’ll be good for you. Your grandfather has these angry outbursts occasionally, but it’s temporary. I need to ask you to please give me your phone.
Ferit walks into his suite and gets his phone from the bedside table.
Ferit: You’re right, Mr. Latif. My grandfather’s anger might be temporary, but the anger I feel right now will never go away.
Ferit pulls the door closed. Latif locks the door. [Perhaps they don’t know about the other exit, via the patio.]
Ferit smiles wryly, takes a deep sigh, and pulls a bottle hidden in a chest of drawers. He sits on the sofa making faces and drinking.
Ferit: You’ll pay for everything you’ve done to me. All my hate will fall on you. You’re going to know Ferit Korhan.
He clenches his jaw and smirks, thinking of revenge.

Suna and Seyran are packing at the Sanli home. Suna tells Seyran this is her last night there and that everything is ready.
Suna: I never thought I’d miss living here. I never thought I would miss this house. It was so different in Antep. Yes, it was better.
Seyran: Sister, listen. We still have an opportunity. We can do something crazy. The past is over; the future is a mystery. The present we can create. We don’t have to conform, sister. Let’s forge our present valiantly. If you want to run, I won’t think twice in running with you. You don’t have to accept a life that you don’t want. I will never leave you alone. You’ll see. Please don’t cry any more. (Seyran wipes away Suna’s tears.) The sadder you look, the more my heart breaks.
Suna: I can’t run. I’m not capable of putting in danger you or Mom, Seyran.
Seyran: Allah, Allah, Sister.
Suna: You can help me with your experience.
Seyran: What do you mean?
Suna: Tell me how you dealt with it. When you were in Antep, when you left the house dressed in white, being forced to marry a man you didn’t love. How did you put up with it? People don’t understand until they live it for themselves.
Seyran: I wish you didn’t have to live this.
The sisters embrace tearfully.

Episode 98 #5 of 7

Back at the yali, Ferit has fallen asleep on the sofa and wakes up later. He looks around him, feeling awful. The bottle is now empty. He walks to the door and finds it locked. The guard asks if he needs something. He tells him no. His hand hurts from trying to open the door. He puts on his coat and stumbles toward the balcony. He walks outside. He closes the door and starts walking on the edge toward the roof. Although unsteady, he makes it down the ladder to the side of the house where Suna and Abidin used to meet. A guard shows up with a flashlight, and Ferit hides until the guard goes elsewhere. Then Ferit makes his way to the garden. Abidin is sitting on a bench, nursing his sorrows with some tea and sad music. [Just now, I wonder where Sultan is. She is always in the garden, lurking!] Ferit walks in a crouch toward the autos when Abidin spots him.
Abidin: Ferit, don’t tell me you escaped. What are you doing out here?
Ferit crouches besides the G-wagon.
Abidin asks what’s wrong.
Ferit: Abidin, you love me, don’t you?
Abidin: Of course I do, buddy. I care about you a lot.
Ferit motions to Abidin to join him crouched by the auto. He tells him if that’s true to help him escape. Abidin tells him that Ferit is drunk and Mr. Halis was very clear. He can’t help him.
Ferit: He’s forbidden me from leaving, but he doesn’t need to find out.
Abidin: I can’t, Ferit.
Ferit: Please, it’s just a little favor. It’ll be simple. I hide in the trunk. I have to see her, Abidin, to be sure she’s OK. Do it, and you can also see Suna.
Abidin: I can’t, Ferit.
Ferit begs him to help him and take him to Seyran. I just want to check on her.
Abidin: If they find out, I’ll get in trouble.
Ferit: Nothing will happen, Abidin. I promise not to get you in trouble. You’re all I’ve got.
Ferit hangs on to Abidin, begging him to help. He laughs and tells Abidin they can stop for juice at the market because he is still drunk and needs to look respectable when he sees her.

Latif brings dinner for Ferit and asks the guard if there have been any problems. The guard says no and says he must be sleeping. He opens the door for Latif. Latif enters and finds no Ferit. He tells the guard to check the bathroom. They both look perplexed and Latif heads out the main door followed by the guard.

At the Sanli high rise, we see that Ferit did convince Abidin to take him there. The two of them walk carefully by the elevators. Abidin’s phone rings. He sees that it is Latif. Ferit tells him not to answer. He tells him he can call him back later. They are busy now. [This is likely going to get Abidin fired, I’m thinking.]
Abidin: But Latif never calls me. He must know.
Ferit: We’ll worry about that later. It doesn’t matter now.
Abidin: He must be calling because he knows you are with me.
Ferit: OK, but what do you want me to do? Die of fear because they’re looking for me at home? [He doesn’t realize the risk Abidin is taking, only thinking of himself. Tsk tsk, Ferit!]
Ferit: I can’t go back now. Relax. We’ll sort things out with my grandfather later.
Ferit goes right up and rings the doorbell. Then he knocks forcefully. Abidin is very uncomfortable and stands back.
Seyran and Suna hear the knocks. Kazim also hears them and walks toward his stairs.
Kazim: Who’s bothering us at this hour! Stop it, you’re going to break down the door. Stop it!
He turns off the alarm and opens the door so suddenly, Ferit falls into the room. Ferit calls out for Seyran.
Seyran hears his voice. The girls peek out their door.
Ferit keeps calling her name, asking where she is.

Kazim: Listen, what the hell are you doing in my house? You reek of booze.
Ferit: Shh. Don’t yell at me. I didn’t come to fight. Just give me a couple of minutes. That’s all. I’d like to speak to you from the heart. Please listen. You can throw me out afterward. I came to beg your permission so please let me see your daughter.
Kazim is quite calm and looks at Ferit almost nicely.
Ferit tearfully: I just want to talk to her. I won’t take long. Please sir, just a couple of minutes. Look at me, sir. I can’t stop thinking about her. I’m scared of losing her. Let me talk to her.
Esme is listening. Hattice is listening with a smile.
Kazim: No, I won’t. Listen. Seyran, don’t you dare come to talk with this drunk. Ferit, you aren’t going to talk to her again. Forget it.
Abidin looks at Ferit.
Ferit: Please, two minutes.
Kazim: Out of the question. I forbid it.
Ferit: Please sir, have mercy. Just two minutes. Sir, why are you treating me like this? I know you care about me. For me, you were like a second father to me. I loved you like my own father. You’re the best father-in-law I could have asked for, and you were as important to me as my grandfather. There’s nothing I wouldn’t have done for you and you know it. You know I’d put my life on the line for you. I already did it once and would do it again. Do you know why? Because you are part of my family. Because I care about you. You will always be my second father. I know you feel it too.
Kazim gives him his famous stare, facing downward and eyes looking up. With his hair disheveled, he looks almost boyish.
Ferit: I know you always dreamed of having a son and that unfortunately never came to pass. But I’m like the son you always wanted. I know you believe that. Mr. Kazim, your family will always be a part of mine. You, Ms. Hattuc, my mother-in-law, and Suna. I love you all very much.
Everyone listening is crying. Seyran and Suna are crying from their doorway.
Ferit: That’s all I have to say. That’s it. My only purpose coming her was to be honest. I can’t take it anymore. I really can’t take feeling like this. (Abidin looks down very seriously.) Look, if something happens to Seyran, I won’t be able to live. I’ll die. I love her more than anyone. She’s everything to me. Please, let me see her for two minutes. That will be enough. I won’t bother her anymore. I promise.
Seyran appears and says: I’m fine.
Ferit looks around and heads toward Seyran, standing in the hall.
Kazim looks conflicted. Hattice has her hand over her heart, very impactada. Suna is also listening carefully.
Kazim: Ferit, you promised, two minutes and then you go. Keep your promise, son. Don’t break it.
Ferit goes to Seyran and embraces her. She doesn’t respond. Kazim heads their way, but Hattice stops him. Ferit holds her tenderly, and Seyran finally responds a little.
Kazim: Ferit, that’s enough.
Kazim goes up to Ferit and pulls him aside, telling him that’s enough and it’s time for him to go.
The girls return to their room.
Abidin and Kazim move Ferit toward the door. Finally, Kazim is able to slam the door shut.
Kazim and Hattice look at one another.
Seyran tells Suna she feels so confused. Suna tells her it’s OK. They will cry together. Suna says she will cry with her all night.
Seyran, sobbing: I still love him.
Suna: He also loves you, Seyran. You’re in love with each other.

Episode 98 #7 of 7
Back at the yali, it’s time to pay the piper. Halis comes downstairs in his robe with Latif. All the family is waiting, watching Halis at the front door. All the henchies are lined up, about ten of them, in two rows facing one another. Meanwhile, the G-wagon arrives. Abidin tells Ferit (who is hiding in the back) to get up.
Ferit, after seeing what’s waiting for them: Oh no, it’s bad.
Abidin opens the door for Ferit. Ferit walks hesitatingly, looking up at his attic.
When he reaches everyone, Halis speaks: You disobeyed my orders. Because of you, the jobs of everyone here are in danger. Latif, I see that there are employees who aren’t worth anything. And even so, they get a salary, and eat my food, while disobeying my orders. Idiots! Ferit, you did me a big favor. Thanks to you, I realized these men are stupid good-for-nothings. They’re nothing but a bunch of incompetents, a bunch of fools who can’t look after a rebellious child. Over a dozen men couldn’t look after one stupid boy. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves. You’re all fired! I don’t want to see you again. Latif, get rid of all of them. And make sure they don’t find work anywhere else. Get out!
The henchies walk away. Abidin joins them.
Halis: Look at me, brat! Get in the house now. We’re going to have a serious talk. Ferit follows Halis, Orhan, and Latif inside. The “receiving line” is still there, standing to watch Ferit’s disgrace.
Ferit goes up to Halis.
Halis: Fine, where did you go? Answer my question.
Ferit: I went to see Seyran.
Halis: So, you went to see her. So, what happened? Did you two reconcile? Did you two have fun? Why did you return so soon?
Ferit: I only wanted to see her. I was very worried about her after this morning.
Halis: What did I tell you when you asked permission to go see her?
Ferit: Well…
Halis: Why don’t you want to answer?
Ferit: You didn’t let me leave, but I needed to see her. I thought she was sick.
Halis: You must follow my orders without excuse. You don’t need to worry about her. She no longer matters. Why do you waste your time when it’s none of your concern? Haven’t you had enough? Did you forget what that family did to us? It’s in one ear and out the other with you. Why do you disobey me? You two are finished. Forget about Seyran. Whether she’s doing well or not is none of our business. Pelin is to be your bride now, and we will not speak of this again. That was the decision that you made. I’m tired of you behaving like a child, embarrassing us with your nonsense.
Orhan: Dad, you need to calm down. Ferit’s obviously frightened. He can go to his room. I know he won’t do it again.
Halis: What a great father. You’re defending your adult son. Shameful. Look at him, crying like a little boy. Behave like a man! A man doesn’t chase after a woman. He doesn’t lower himself to beg her! When you humiliate yourself, you humiliate us and our family in the eyes of those people. That lapdog Kazim is probably mocking us right now. Is that what you wanted? Do you have any idea how much you dishonor my name?
Orhan: Son, go to your room.
Halis: No! He stays here. I’m still not finished with this immature punk!
Orhan: Dad!
Ferit looks up at his father and grandfather.
