El Talismán #1 Mon 1/30/12 The Cheese Stands Alone

Ahoy all! Cynderella's recap for last night will be posted a little later today, sorry for the delay. In the meantime I think we can all agree that Elna June's prediction that this would be queso fresco puro turned out to be spot on. This, of course, makes recapping and commenting almost too much fun. Until the recap gets posted feel free to comment amongst yourselves. Possible subject matter...what's up with Antonio's massive silver belt buckle that hovers over his manhood like a gigantic shining beacon?

UPDATE: Poor Cynderella is having a hell day and hasn't been able to get Part One to me yet. I'm going to go ahead and post Part Two and I'm thinking this won't be a problem since the timelines from this episode are so confusing and screwed up anyway.

UPDATE UPDATE: Presenting the tag team of Cynderella and Sharkbait...

Part One by Cynderella:
I must say, I do like the theme song.  It’s very catchy.

Ranch in the South of Texas

From a distance, we view a woman riding a powerful brown and white stallion across an endless sea of green farmland.  The camera zooms in on a slow motion shot of the galloping horse’s legs, and then fades into a close-up shot of our heroine, the beautiful Camila.   With wild hair, blowing in the manufactured wind of a large industrial fan, our heroine (who now appears to be riding a rocking horse), turns and looks back when she hears her name frantically shouted from a black jeep!  Total beauty shot!  Tyra banks would be so proud! According to her brother, Armando, people are at the house taking their things!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch:

It’s the repo man! How embarrassing!  They are seizing everything at the ranch! Elvira, Camila’s mother, is pleading with the movers to leave her stuff where it is.  While Elvira hysterically chases the movers around, her outwardly remorseful husband follows her around begging for forgiveness.  Out on the front porch, he swears he will never gamble again!  She angry and doesn’t believe him (I don’t either).  Because of the moving truck, Camila and Armando can’t park in the drive way.  The two spring from the jeep and Camila runs over to her temporarily catatonic mother and demands to know why her things are being loaded onto the moving repo truck. Her mother snaps out of her trance and she and Armando run back into the house to save what they can.  Camila asks her father why he returned to gambling?  On his knees, Camila’s father begs her not to hate him.  She assures him that she does not hate him, but this hurts a lot.  In a strange soliloquy, facing away from his daughter and looking in the direction of the moving truck, he swears to get back everything he lost and return it to his family and get them the most beautiful ranch he has ever seen (I think).

Fresno, CA

We are now in front of a vine covered a two story, two-car home.  We hear two older gentlemen (one named Raul) speaking while looking out of a second story window.  One of them mentions his wife who is in bad way and never recovered from the fire.  In a flashback scene, we see two men starting a fire at El Talisman in order to force the owner of El Talisman to sell it.  They are throwing gasoline around like its Gatorade and it’s fourth quarter at the Superbowl!    The two men later hide in the bushes and watch the efforts to put out the fire (one Bernardo) say that the fire was set over the love of a woman.  According to one of the men in the window, the fire was started by Gregorio, and everyone knows it, but there is no proof.  I think Matilde was in the fire and got lung damage or something.

We are now in the bedroom of a gravely ill woman, Maltide, who is obviously about to meet her maker.  At her bedside is her daughter, Marianna, who is tending to her needs.  She tells her Marianna not to cry because she (the mother) is at peace.  She wants her daughter to leave Antonio alone.  He’s just playing with you, she tells her.

Introducing Antonio and his AMAZING six-pack!

In the next scene, we meet Antonio, a hairy beast with stellar wash-board abs.  He is getting dressed in an almost reversed Chippendale dancer way, while his sister looks on in a disturbing way.  She looks as if she smells something on her upper lip as she plays with her chain.  Side note, this is where I had to stretch my imagination because I don’t believe that Antonio dates women.  The actor doesn’t give off that vibe.  Sorry, I went off on a tangent, but I saw Antonio riding a horse shirtless and it reminded me of something that the Old Spice guy would do.  So, I am going to refer to him as OSG.

So anyways, we are treated to OSG getting dressed and his sister asks if he is going to see some chick that his father hates.  He temporarily snaps and tries to choke is his sister.

Camila tells her grandmother that her father is taking them to the most beautiful ranch that he has ever seen.  Grandma tells her to enjoy her youth and find love.

Orphanage in Tiajuana, Mexico Baja California

We finally meet our hero, Pedro.  He’s not as hot as OSG; but he is masculine (which is a plus and I believe that he could possibly date women in real life).   He’s going to the United States to make money to send back to the monjas (nuns).  Pedro goes walks over to the children to say goodbye, but they don’t seem to care that he’s leaving at that point.  One child appears to try to twist out of Pedro’s grasp when he stoops down to kiss him and anther turns his face away as if he has a strong case of halitosis.  It’s seems as if the children were happy to see him go and would not miss him. A nun stops him on the way out of the orphanage gate and asks him not to leave.  Pedro tells her that he wants to give money to the orphanage that has helped him so much.  The nun blesses him and more hugs.  Someone must have told the children to act enthusiastic and threatened their pay, because a group of them run over to him to say goodbye.

Oh we’re back at the bed of the dying woman.  She wants her daughter to be as happy as she was with the daughter’s father.  As she fades away, her entire life flashes before her eyes.  Her daughter runs from the room to get her father.   I originally thought she died right then, but mustered the strength to step away from the light and came back long enough to tell her husband that she had a happy life at his side…finally she dies.  He closes her eyelids.  Her husband was one of the two mean standing in the window having a conversation about the arson at El Talisman.

Now, riding in the back of a sweltering, 18-wheeler packed with other immigrants, Pedro and his friend Margarito are sitting behind a woman who is holding a baby and is strangely dressed like the virgin Mary. They are talking about meeting women when they get to America.  The baby is crying and will not shut-up.  I’m annoyed with the baby and I am not packed in the back of a hot 18-wheeler with 50 other people.

Apparently, Camila’s father was lying about never gambling again because he is playing cards at a casino.  It looks like he’s winning.

OK now we are at a funeral home.  Daughter and father are at the wake crying over a hunter green casket with white satin lining.  Matilde has only been dead 5 minutes! She’s embalmed, hair done, dressed and in a casket. Obviously she wasn’t that popular, nobody else is at the wake. OSG, wearing dark sunglasses enters the chapel along with his father, Gregorio.   Matilde’s husband promptly tells Gregorio to get the hell out and take his kid with him.  These men have got to be about 102 and they are still fighting over woman who is now dead.  Am I missing something?  She’s in a casket and they are arguing like she’s gonna get up and choose between the two of them.  Maltide’s husband blames Gregorio for Matilde’s death.  Gregorio is adamant that he would have never tried to kill the woman that he loves.  Gregorio offers to pay double or triple whatever El Talisman is worth.  Matilde’s husband says “hell no!”

Camila’s father is still gambling and enjoying every minute of it.

El Talisman

Marianna’s father is sending her off to New York to stay with her aunt Patricia.  Marianna knows it’s to keep her away from OSG.  She believes it’s only because he’s the son of Don Gregorio.  Later behind a barn, Marianna informs OSG that her father is sending her to New York.  OSG tells her that he can’t live without her (I think that’s what he said.  My CC doesn’t work very well).  They embrace, and over her shoulder he gives us a sinister smile and displays those dreamy green eyes.  I still don’t believe he sleeps with Marianna or his wife (no matter how delicious he may look).

Camila’s Grandma’s House

Camila’s father comes to visit.  He bought a gift of reconciliation.  He’s there to get his family back with his winnings or something.  As Camila father runs into the house to talk to his wife, Grandma gives a hug to Camila and tells her love can’t be bought.

18-wheeler USA

The truck is parked at a gas station.  That baby is still crying!  Pedro tells Margarito that they are in the US.  The driver opens the door and tells everyone to be quiet while he goes into the gas station to get some snacks.  Judging by what he bought at the counter, he only bought enough snacks for himself.  At the same time, Marianna and her father pull into the station to get gas.  Back in the truck, the Virgin Mary is comforting the baby.  A cop pulls into the station, when he gets out of his vehicle, he immediately hears that obnoxious baby crying.  The cop goes back to the car to call for back up.  The driver runs out to the parking lot and asks the cop if there’s a problem.  The cop demands that he open the trailer and all 400 people including three LA gang members, some yuppies, a couple of farmers, two goats, a chicken, the Virgin Mary, Margarito and Pedro jump out of the back.  Watch the tape again.   I’m not exaggerating (well maybe a little).  Pedro selflessly helps the women down from the trailer before running to save himself.   Well for some reason, Pedro falls over nothing and twists his ankle.  He’s in pain and can barely walk.  Marianna helps him up and pretends that he came with her.  Her father protests, but they take Pedro back to El Talisman and get a doctor to see him.

Back at Grandma’s

I didn’t get a good look at necklace, but is must have been a hellava necklace because in the next scene, she tells Camila and Armando that she is reconciling with their father.  Side note: I think that the mother might have had Camila when she was 12 years old.  The mother informs the “children” that the family is moving to California.

Don Gregorio on a Bridge

He’s still upset that Matilde broke up with him.  Other than that my CC was not picking up why he needs El Talisman.

Part Two by Sylvia:
Just added:
After Some Undefined Time...

The fields are dusty but the palm trees sway on the lush Fresno rancho. Mariana tells Pedro he is like the brother she never had. She whines about going to Nuevo York and Pedro asks if she has seen Antonio’s divorce papers yet.

Lucrezia tells Antonio she’s hot for Pedro. Tony’s incensed because Pedro is just a nobody ranch hand while Lucrezia is the slutty daughter of a well-to-do murderer. (OK, I paraphrased) Lucrezia doesn’t care, she’s got an itch that needs scratching.

In Texas
Elvira decides to forgive hubby so she gathers up the “kids” and rather brusquely says goodbye to her sweet mama and the bratty son says “we need something better than this granny”. Sheesh. At least Camila is sweet about her good-bye. Granny says everything depends on Camila who clearly is the only one with a heart. I think she should stay with Gran and let the others go. But then we wouldn’t have a story so never mind.

Evil Don Gregorio rudely attempts to bribe Pedro but Pedro blows him off, “Dude, everyone needs money but Don Bernardo is my friend so bugger off.”

Don B calls his daughter in New York and wonders about her aunt. Er, Uh, she’s fine lies Mariana the worlds worst liar. The gigantic belt buckle, hanging down around Tony’s nether regions, enters the room. He coos something about some problem with the divorce papers. What a coincidence, she says, just don’t let me down, OK? He hugs her and rolls his eyes. I hate how he keeps calling her mija like she’s some dumb kid. Oh wait, she is.

Pedro reassures Don B that he can always count on him to help keep El Tal away from the odious Gregorio. As these two drive away Los Najera arrive knowing that this rancho isn’t listed but they wanted to look anyway because it’s so gorgeous. Elvira has a mini hissy at Esteban, “I thought you promised to buy me a cool rancho! Everyone has their price.” The kids disappear to let the grownups bicker.

Don B notices the strange truck in front of the door and Pedro catches sight of the lovely Camila. She totally falls in love with place while Pedro turns the truck around. She manages to trip in front of the truck just as Pedro accelerates home. She falls. He breaks. She looks up. He kneels down to help her. Their eyes lock. Their song plays. He raises her up in a half embrace. And POW!! It’s love at first sight.

Over at El Alcatraz crankypants Don Gregorio is such a cad that he pitches a fit because he was served GREEN salsa and he wanted RED. He throws his napkin down and blames Pedro Ibarra for not being able to get El Tal.

Back at El Tal Esteban tries to introduce his family but Elvira interrupts and asks don B if he wants to sell his ranch by any chance. Don B accuses them of being part of evil Don G’s plot to get the rancho. Pedro and Camila are practically oblivious to all this as they circle and ogle each other in wonder.

Camila tells Don B they honestly do not know this don Gregorio. “I believe you,” gushes the smitten Pedro.

We see a rather believable shot of a smoggy Fresno sunset and some post-traffic cars speeding down the freeway.

At the hotel Elvira gripes that the Rancho La Quinta they looked at was much smaller than on the internet. As Esteban attempts to appease her Camila dreams about Pedro. Elsewhere Pedro moons over Camila, “Where could you be Camila, where?”

Next morning Camila calls her Gran to tell her about the hot guy she met the day before, butterflies in the stomach and everything. Gran says it sounds like love so be careful.

Pedro is working alone and Lucrezia, with her own big belt buckle, sashays up to him, “Hey handsome”. He’s suspicious and suggests she’s lost and ended up at the wrong rancho. Nope, she’s looking for him. Does her dad know? Nope. Then she uses one of my favorite lines, “They say it’s better to ask forgiveness than permission.” Ha, I wonder if I sound that sleazy when I say it? She tells him how much she LIIIIKES him and moves in for a slutty kiss. “Don’t even try,” he scolds, pushing her away.

Brother Jose overhears and teases Camila about liking Pedro a lot. She calls him crazy and then laughs, is it that obvious? He warns that things could become complicated what with El Tal, mom (rolls eyes), plus what does she know about Pedro? He could have a girlfriend, a lover, a wife. (How about eventually all of the above, LOL!!)

Back to Pedro, he advises Little Miss Screw-Loosecrecia that she should clean up her act before she gets a bad reputation. Men like decent women. Alone, she tells his retreating back, “You will be mine.”

Earlier Don B’s doctor got the unfortunate report on his patient’s health. The doc has wasted no time in coming to tell Don B the test results. “You have terminal cancer, maybe a few months left to live.” Don B is distraught, mostly about leaving his daughter alone at the mercy of evil Don Gregorio. Pedro is a good guy and could handle the ranch but Don G plays dirty and Pedro could wind up in jail or deported. Nope, he has no option but to sell El Talismán. But never to Gregorio, Never!!

Outside one of the workers tells Pedro he’s got a female visitor. “Aw geez, it’s not Lucrezia is it?” he asks. This time it’s the perky, Spanglish-speaking Tracy looking for work. She’s got papers, she’s from there. She’s gringa AND Mexicana, get it?

This is Pedro’s busy day for visitors. He sees Camila approach, hires Tracy on the spot to get rid of her, and stares at Camila while trying to find his tongue. They verbally stumble over a few words of introduction before she gets right to it. She blows him away by telling him she wants to know what it was they felt yesterday when they met.

In Nuevo York Antonio is enjoying his mid-morning whiskey when Mariana arrives looking more concerned than usual. “Don’t tell me you’re going to leave again,” he coos. “I’m pregnant,” she reveals. Antonio doesn’t actually look surprised so I’m thinking, mission accomplished?

Pedro, still frozen with cara impactada, listens while Camila insists, “You think I’m crazy but I want to know what happened yesterday when we met.” Pedro laughs nervously and says he almost ran her down. “Come on,” she says, “you didn’t feel anything?” He’s charmed by her way with words and they continue to ogle each other into the closing credits.

A few fun phrases:
ni lo intentes = don’t even try
no me falles = don’t let me down
que casualidad = what a coincidence
te movió el tapete = you really like him/her (lit. you moved the table)

LOL, looking forward to the recap, and I agree, it's gonna be a fun show!

I think I'm going to enjoy this show, with its alternate universe where everyone in FRESNO speaks Spanis and the terrain is lush and tropical. (Like with Eva Luna, where everyone in LA spoke Spanish and LA was also lush and tropical.)

This at least has gotten off to a good start with plenty of action and not like LQNPA which just drags on and on and on.....

Novelera in AZ

The buckle, the abs and then the face... In order of appearance. Way to introduce a character! On the flip side, his sister's tight black pants were not at all endearing. How dare she wear them so well.

First commercial break was 41 minutes in.

Rosemary la Otra

I love it! Can hardly wait to read someone else's take in the recap.

It's cheesy, sure, but in the best way, and they aren't dragging things out at all so far. Flying right through the setup. Plus it's all so beautiful, it almost makes me want to move to Fresno ;).

Hey, he needs that giant shiny belt buckle...because wearing a flashing neon sign is considered tacky and low-class.

No kidding! Aaron Diaz seems to be having way too much fun playing nasty old Antonio. With all his leering and eye-rolling he's almost like Snidely Whiplash. If he had a mustache he would definitely be twirling it.

Did you love how the U.S. cops ALL had Spanish accents? To be fair, they did a pretty good job with "get out of the truck" or whatever they were saying.

I was despairing over the 2-dimensional characters until that Tracy showed up. ¡¡Qué cute!! And Pedro hired her without even finding out what she did...I think we're going to get some comic relief out of that one.

Also, I always love the abuela character -- hope they bring her to "Fresno."

Rosemary, I thought that scene was well filmed. Even before they got to the belt buckle, when we just saw his boots walking into the room, I immediately got a sense of exactly what sort of guy this character is. Then the ring, the whiskey, the belt, the abs...it was entirely set up before we ever saw his face.

That Tracy girl was funny. I know people who talk exactly like her.

The cops, on the other hand...I was amused by the same thing in Eva Luna, that most of the extras playing locals didn't have native gringo accents. Odd, considering they film in the U.S.; there should be plenty of bilingual extras available who don't sound foreign. Whatever, it was funny.

"The cheese stands alone." Well played, ladies!

Three things just catapulted out at me about the first episode:

- the ridiculous and utterly inappropriate chemistry between siblings Antonio and Lucrecia Negrete (YMMV, of course, but for me damn);
- Aaron Diaz successfully achieving either the 50s "greaser" or 80s "Latin gangster" look--I'm still not sure which--complete with implied nearly visible dirtiness, though he really did seem to be into it;
- and I just couldn't take Sergio Reynoso seriously as a head villano. I'm assuming this will pass, but here his Don Gregorio was like a Bond villain on a horse, complete with bombastic declarations about EL TALISMAN! (Yeah, he pretty much spoke in caps about it.) And on top of that...as I put it elsewhere, he either looked like
a. an evil mariachi band leader;
b. a messed-up alternate universe version of La que no podia amar's Rogelio Montero; or
c. lawyer/ambulance chaser Jim Adler (AKA "the Texas Hammer").

Oh, that thing wasn't silver; it was SOLID GOLD baby! Along with the ring and the necklace. Yes, Aaron Diaz looks like he's having a ball after playing the saintly Mariano in Teresa.

This one is going to be fun for snark. The lush countryside is beautiful. Ah, Fresno! Just like how I remember it...

What's up with rich girls in the countryside and bare mid-drifts?

Shouldn't Antonio see about his divorce first if he wants seduce Mariana to get her to marry him so he can get his hot hands on El Talisman?

I'm looking forward to Cynderella's first recap.

Hi could one of the bloggers please put up a discussion page for Familia? Cherly is on vacation and there is not blogger for Monday until she gets back.

Love the subtle hints of the GIANT ring and the GIANT beltbuckle. In case his behavior didn't let you know that he's a MANLY man. Actually I thought the ring had a watch on it, but then he put on a watch, so that'd be wierd.

It's a GIANT cheeseball of a show, but in a fun way. Except the music is better over on La Que, etc. At least Pedro didn't have to cross over at the sand dunes.

Kelly

Madeleine, it looks like Ezra did a recap but forgot to "publish" it. I just did that. Let me know if it is NOT last night's show, OK?

YEah! A passer-thru noted that belt buckle and asked me what's with the belt buckle instead of who's he.
I myself am still dizzy from the rapid scene zooming. Dying woman to men and horses pausing on bridge to dying woman eyes glaze with bedside loved one screaming she's gone to another scene. AND THEN the not really dead woman's husband at bedside! I'm sayin' finish the scene all 30 seconds together.

Julia, It really was a great scene, a superb combination of danger and smoldering sexuality. I could totally understand Mariana falling for that guy and her parents' distress about it. Every time she said "He's not like his father" I got the feeling she was trying to convince herself more than anyone else.

Yes, Tracy is adorable. Her Spanglish was very believable and typical of kids like her. (Based on my friends from Mexico who complain about their younger siblings, born in the U.S., who regularly mix Spanish and English together.)

Bill, Sergio Reynoso is going to be the most difficult for me. I'm glad he's a bad guy because I don't like him. Can you believe the first time I saw him in a telenovela he actually played the galán? Talk about a leap of faith!

Oh dear, is the GIANT MANLY buckle really solid gold? Stoopid TV! Gold...even BETTER!!!

Oh yes, it's everything I was hoping for and more!

I have put my tinfoil beanie in storage and will be wearing my cheesehead for my sojourn in tropical Fresno.

Bring it on Venevision, bring it on!

Bonney, mama died twice as far as I could tell, LOL!!

She was just kidding the first time she died. :) It's a good thing Mariana has Pedro in her life because she has no common sense, and with mom gone, and dad soon to be gone, she would be a sitting duck for Los Negrete.

I am also happy to report that Rafael Novoa is over 40, so I can officially think he's cute. COZ I'M NO CRADLE ROBBER (robacunas.)

I personally think that men aren't usually hot until they're 30. So Raphael Novoa is caliente and picante at the same time.

I didn't have a chance yesterday to argue with Vivi whether Rafael Novoa was beefcake. Here is my evidence pro-beefcake: Rafael Novoa's IMO very hot bod!

Audrey

Isn't there a rule somewhere that says you shouldn't wear a belt buckle that is bigger than your face??

Audrey- Maybe he needs to walk around with his shirt off like that and I'll change my mind. :)

FACE? Who's going to notice his FACE>

Thank you Cap'n Sylvia, it is posted now it was last night's show. thanks.

The first episode was quite a whirlwind of events. I need a score card to keep all the characters apart and in the correct family. Hope the anger simmers down, I quit watching Podia for that reason.

Wow, way to start the day - in California at least - with major snark. You guys are good.

Univisión certainly doesn't emphasize subtlety. Every character loudly broadcast their role in the show: Evil spurned-lover older man; evil conniving younger man; saintly older owner of ranch; hyper-sexual rich girl who paws the galán. Check, check, and check. The only surprise for me was the heroine. Instead of blushing and waiting for Navoa to find her, she went right to him and talked about their attraction. You go, girl!

I almost turned the show off though when they showed Pedro telling the nuns he was going to the US to get money for the orphans. Please.

Pure Camenbert, all right.

All:

Just got in from a morning meeting and found your wonderful comments. Wasn't this a scream?

A couple of questions for you all—what's with the older model truck being driven by Don What-his-name? Pedro nearly mowed Camila down with the same vehicle, but by that time, Pedro was Don Dying-of-Terminal Cancer's right hand man. Maybe Pedro had some really special skills that led him to the top of the worker heap in such a short time?

Camila sure did not waste any time. She sashayed right up to Pedro and said, "Baby, baby." Now that is a BOLD heroine. We don't yet know if she has any brains but she sure has brawn.

'Fres-no-not-really' is a grand place. Can't wait for the excursions to the local sights. The house is pretty neat, but a fake lake with that much water would be surely used to water cattle on a ranch in dry, hot central California.

If I were Mariana I could be tempted into a relationship with Antonio—just for the sake of the gene pool, mind you. For the good of all humankind, I devoutly hope Aaron Diaz reproduces. I also hope he doesn't trying riding a horse in those low-rise jeans. The resulting plumbers-crack problem would be a sight to see.

EJ

I think we are going to have a blast with this.

Sylvia:

"The Cheese Stands Alone". I can't stop laughing at your title.

EJ

EJ, you inspired it!

The timeline seems a little wonky. Even the caption said something like "Tiempo Despues", so they were very vague about how much time had passed. This show definitely screams for beanies, no doubt about it. I gather that the rancho was getting very difficult for nice papa to manage and Pedro showed up in the nick of time, allowing nice dad to hold onto it for a bit longer. I'm sure Pedro has numerous very key skills that will reveal themselves over time, hee.

Emilia, maybe instead of cowboy hats we should be wearing head-sized belt buckles for our attire? Sure sounds uncomfortable to me.

It was funny how taken aback Pedro was by Camila's boldness. "Hey baby, I felt the earth move, didn't you?" Said while looking pure and virginal, unlike the mid-drift baring skank from next door who had just propositioned him. Brawn indeed. I hope she has brains too. But she sure is trusting of her dad. None of them should believe that the guy is going to change and stop gambling.

Thank you SilviShark. I say we make a cheesey list and start with: One back from the dead. Two struck by lightning love.
Loved the Florida tropics sound effects {-)

OK, one more quibble for the record. It is about 340 miles from San Diego, just over the border from Tijuana, to 'Fres-no-not-really'.

So Mariana and 'Don Terminal' just got in their older truck and drove 340 miles to San Diego, picked up the handsomest undocumented worker with a broken leg they could find, and drove with him on their bench seat the mere 5-7 hours back to El Talisman?

Guau!

EJ

I figured they made it past the border and the checkpoints on the 5, all the way up to Fresno before finally getting caught. Note to self- Never try to sneak across the border with a baby.

Love the wardrobe so far on Camila (right? Our very bold heroine). It's cute and feminine, but actually covers her abs and most of the boobs. Well done, wardrobe dept.

Kelly

lovit-lovit-LOvit! Love the minds here!!! EJ that is screamin funnie! (breath) This is going to be so much FUN!!!
Tryin now for a strait face over the name Don Dying...but it aint appropriate to belly laugh.

Audrey - That picture!

I love the big belt buckle being our official accessory. We may need to hit some yard sales.

Did it display what year we were in but I missed it under my CC? Sylvia's plot synopsis makes us think we will span many years.

R la O

I was wondering what the abuela was going to do in Mexico, now that her whole family left. I also thought the house they left was very nice. Who needs a ranch?

I for one liked Lucrecia's outfit more than Camila's. I'm guessing (hoping) those were Camila's traveling clothes, and she'll get a little more daring with time.

Kelly:

Two great points. You are such an optimist!

So the truck full of undocumented folks made it all the way up the '5' to what, Harris Ranch, before getting stopped?

Nice thought, and more sensible than my presumption of a L-O-N-G pickup truck ride back to El Talisman. The small talk could have been fun to imagine though, "Hola. Me llamo Pedro. I love orphans and kittens and tortillas and raisin pie."

Also, ITA on the heroine wardrobe. Nice job and not skanky or too sweet for a change.

EJ

EJ

Abuela's in Texas, not Mexico, right? She does have a nice big house. I wonder how much she'll be involved in the story now that everyone else left.

No one in that family should trust gambler dad with the money. It should be in an account he can't access and the ranch should be in his wife's name. No way is he going to stay away from gambling; at least they should limit the quantities he can lose. Of course he'd probably end up with thugs after him breaking his knees...

I have to admit I like the commentary more than the episode. It felt a bit like the chopped up DVDs you get after the run of the show. I'm still going to watch it tonight. I don't want to make any hasty decisions. Lol. I loved Pedro and Camila's theme. Aaron is going to be a great douchebag.

Wow, never has a new show started so fast. So much covered in so little time.

I love me some Raphael Novoa, so totally handsome. And Camila is beautiful. They will be very nice to watch falling in love.

Aaron Diaz plays a great bad guy. He knows just how to give the look. I wish he wasn't so good looking. I'd rather the bad guys be ugly. It makes it easier to hate them.

Wonderful comments. Meetings all day and just able to check in.

Boy am I glad I wasn't the only one snickering and eye rolling last night--all in a "this is going to be so fun to comment on" sort of way. I had to tell myself going in," self, there will be no Silvia, but there is Aaron, so give this is a shot." And my, did Aaron NOT disappoint. What a hoot, and he is 100% just going for the buckle gold on paying the baddie.

I cringed at poor BS's boot/tanktop/long skirt wardrobe (please tell me that won't last long) and she's a little stiff for me, especially after watching Cuando and the women there. But like you all, I'm game to keep watching, especially if turns out to be the over-the-top type show episode one was.

Well, I'm certainly glad I didn't miss the little stroll down Aaron Diaz' body...the boots, the abs, the belt buckle...fabulous landscape.

I bailed when the super tender-hearted good guy-lover of orphans bade farewell to nunsie. Figured I'd already seen the best of the episode. But I'll definitely be checking in to read the comments. You all will be at your best with this hot mess.

The first episode was a little disorienting for me, but in a good sort of way.

The Dr. certainly didn't mince words about poor don Bernardo's cancer. Camila got right to the point with Pedro and Marcela ("Estoy embarazada.") did as well.

Will this be a TN where there's none of the usual beating around the bush?

Carlos

I'm with you, Judy. Quite a stroll. Mike snorted when I accidentally "mmmmm, mmmmm-ed" out loud.

Emilia- I'm sure that Mike understood that you were just referring to the nice piece of cake or other desert you had just taken a bit of. Right?...;-)

It's a shame those immigrants had to spend the whole trip in the back of a truck because-in defense of the Central Valley- it is nice to look at the crop label on all the stuff growing on the side of the highway. I like seeing what food looks like, pre-grocery store. Of course, since the immigrants will be the ones to pick everything, they probably don't care. Still, yeah farmers!

Kelly

That must be it, Vivi. Cake, not beefcake!!

was that marcela mar sitting at Don Gregorio's table? she was the lead lady with Rafael Novoa in Pura Sangre, but she looks way thin here, almost malnourished. Is she here to stay?
Rafa Novoa looks awesome as kick ass Pedro the handiman/foreman of the hacienda...
Vivi i could not agree more on your comment.
It was funny how taken aback Pedro was by Camila's boldness. "Hey baby, I felt the earth move, didn't you?" Rafa's face was priceless!
i also agree with Carlos that this first ep was a bit disorienting... but have to give it a few eps... i do like the 'up front in your face' attitude of Camila and Mariana.. btw, karime Lozano looks good, better than in prev novelas...
I am sure we will all hate Don Gregorio and his children in NO TIME!

Is Sergio R. the guy who looks like Emeril Lagassi in a cowboy hat ? I am not fussy about that actor, and I think I know the novela you are referring to , Sylvia. Didn't he play a veterinarian ? I guess I will give this a try. I am not interested in any of the galans, but since none of my telenovios are in shows right now, I suppose I'll check it out. The girl from Eva Luna has an interesting wardrobe in this one. She wears what looks like a skirt over a skirt, vest, tee, boots. I'm getting a Coldwater Creek vine from her. Kinda cute and ranchy.

Judy, it does look like a hot mess... and it sounds like this one we will be serious about at times an sometimes we will snark the heck out of

I think this is going to be a very fun TN; I just put my beanie on for El Talizman and leave it on through LQNPA.
Yeah, it's like Eva Luna, swamps and palm trees in Fresno. I had a hard time keeping up with what was Mexico and what was Fresno.
Camila, you need to pull back a bit with Pedro. You'll scare him away.

Aaron Diaz/Antonio reminds me of Al Pacino/Tony Montana in Scarface w/ a wardrobe updated beyond white polyester disco suits. Waiting to hear him say, "All I have in this world is my balls and my word, and I don't break 'em for no one." Think about that, ladies, while you enjoy the eye candy.

Don Bernardo de el Cancer Terminal looks like Richard Webb, who played Captain Midnight (re-branded as Jet Jackson) would have looked at that age. Ah, Baby Boomer memories. I think a cereal box top and 25 cents got me the Captain Midnight decoder ring back in the day.

Julia, I agree - my impression was that the dear ol' abuela was in "Sur de Texas" somewhere.

Mike- That's what I got too, that everything was north of the border, Texas or "Fresno", except for the orphanage scene in TJ. It's not too odd that so many people in these places speak Spanish. You can hear lots of conversations that happen in espanol, or half spanish-half english.

Now if they'd set it in Minnesota...

Kelly

Kelly, the Minnesota setting would be half Norsk, half Hmong and half English, right?

Please excuse my math skills.

Dumb question/observation which was probably discussed with Eva Luna. What's with the weird washed out glow look to the TN?

Hi all, I updated the recap. Poor Cynderella is having first-time poster blues and can't seem to get her recap posted. She won't be able to get her first part to me for another hour so I went ahead and did Part Two for her and just posted it. Sorry about the craziness today.

Yep, the story started in Southern Texas which is where Granny lives.

Oh, and I need to check my history books and find out when the Seminoles migrated to Fresno and built all those chickees I saw.

Mike- Now there's a setting that could get interesting!

Kelly

Wow! Cynderella, I love the second part that was posted. You are fantastic at bringing the snark. So, did Antonio intend to impregnate Mariana? Seems fruitless if he's still married. It's not like he can marry her right away.

I noticed that they never showed us any love/sex scenes between those two. Just implied, but Mariana was already fully dressed and Antonio was buckling that belt of his.

Looking forward to part 1.

Susanlynn - I love Coldwater Creek and agree with you on Camila's outfit.

This first episode did seem a bit choppy and frenetic. I think it was an attempt to rope us in from the get go. Certainly that was the idea behind the 41 commercial free minutes.

My guess is we'll get into the groove and end up really liking this one. I see lots of possibilities with these 3 families. I think it was our Sylvia who thought CME was going to be a dud the first week and was so glad she stayed with it.

Unfortunately, I can't imagine trying to follow this plot AND enjoy a little sipsy at the same time. Of course I may not get as thirsty given it is not filmed at a vineyard.

Anxious to see what tonight brings!

R la O

Vivi, Oops, to clarify, I did part two because Cynderella got caught up with schoolwork and such. I might delete a portion of mine if her Part One goes more than halfway.

Yes Rosemary La O, I almost bailed on CME, perish the thought!!!

Susanlynn, I would LOVE it if you joined in on the discussion for this telenovela. It really seems like it will be a hoot. I already can't wait for tonight's episode. Only thing, I doubt we will see much swordfighting in this one.

Is the size of that belt buckle any indication of the size of what it's meant to lift and separate?

Sylvia, I'm not clear on who actually wrote part 2. You said, "...so I went ahead and did Part Two for her and just posted it."

It sounded a lot like your style:

"Ha, I wonder if I sound that sleazy when I say it?"

In any case, part 2 is brilliant. Thanks for posting it.

Lucrezia certainly is in the running for my early favorite. With her and with Cinthia in LQNPA I'm in midriff heaven.

Carlos

Fabulous part 2! I loved Screw-loosecrazia.

Yes, I authored Part Two. Cynderella got partway through her recap and due to a series of technical difficulties wasn't able to post her first part. She should be able to get her partial recap to me in about a half hour.

Carlos, you sure know my style by now.

Sylvia- No wonder it was so brilliant off the bat! Thanks amiga. Well done.

Telenovios! Midriff heaven! You guys are a hoot!

Part One is up! It's hilarious! Nice job Cynderella.

Marvelous debut, Cynderella! A snicker a minute! Loved the clown-car image of people coming out of the back of the truck...

Sylvia - Te movio el tapete. Thanks for Part II. I am delighted to see your nicknaming beginning right from the start. "Crankypants" certainly fits Don G., and "Little Miss Screw-Loosecrecia" is a real winner!

Why is it so fun and darling when we mujeres comment on the guys, but when Carlos starts in saying he may like Lucrecia, it irks me? lol Carlos, we are really hoping you'll choose a non-irritating one this time. Someone nice, not necessarily too pretty. Maybe abuela? Then you won't make any of your telenovias jealous.

Blue Lass, did you come up with that word: telenovios? It is so cute! And just how we feel about our guys!

Off to read Part I.

Thanks again, Sylvia!

R la O

Great job Cynderella. Very funny. Lots of great lines, my fave:

"Someone must have told the children to act enthusiastic and threatened their pay, because a group of them run over to him to say goodbye."

You'll fit in nicely here.

Like you, I don't think that we've seen the last of Daddy's gambling.

Carlos

Notice how both Cynderella and I put "children" and "kids" in quotes? Great minds think alike.

I was also creeped out by the initial interaction between Antonio and Lucrezia. They didn't really seem like brother and sister.

Cynderella, I love your description of the people busting out of the back of the truck. And your snark about the driver buying just a snack for himself, brilliant. Those coyotes aren't known for their kind treatment of illegals, that's for sure.

Old Spice Guy, ha haaa!! Funny.

I for one would be very disappointed if our Carlos did not stick up for the bad girl.

Thank you, Cynder, for persevering! I really enjoyed the recap. You caught Antonio's smoldering looks alright. There is not a bit of kindness in those hot eyes.

ElnaJune

Cynderella, you are a riot! That first half was hilarious. Thanks for pushing through difficulties and getting it to us.

Cynderella, you nut! This was so funny! My two favorite lines were "getting dressed almost reversed Chippendale dancer way" and "Well for some reason Pedro falls over nothing and twists his ankle". lol Lots of laughs the whole way through. Thank you!

Are we to assume Pedro was raised in the orphanage and is just now leaving? Kind of like Tobey Maguire in Cider House Rules?

I guess you are right, Sylvia. We do expect Carlos to stick up for the bad girl. I guess that's why he is drawn to our group?

R la O

R la O, that is undoubtedly the reason!

Just one note about the very confusing beginning of this show. (In fact I had to watch it three times to make sense of it.)

1) In the present: The first two guys who are talking and looking out the window are nice old don Bernardo and his helper Raul who are in the house of el Talismn and cursing Gregorio (of the big eyebrows) for setting fire to the stables some years ago.

2) Flashback to the past: The two guys who set fire to the stables and are hiding in the bushes are Gregorio and his henchman. They are shocked to overhear that Matilde, the love of Gregorio's life, is actually in the stables. Nice job dumba$$.

3) Back in the present: Matilde is finally dying from emphysema caused by her lung damage.

Good guy = Don Bernardo Aceves, owner of El Talisman.
Bad guy = Don Gregorio Negrete, owner of El Alcatraz, arsonist and unintentional killer of Matilde.

Oh, both parts, so, so funny!
Thank you both!

Jardinera, how did I miss your comment: "Is the size of that belt buckle any indication of the size of what it's meant to lift and separate?" Naughty!! (And just what I was thinking last night.)

Capn, also so funny. thank you for clarifying.
Why does Gregorio need El talizman?

Camila and her Mom are about the same age, right?

What? It separates?

EMarie - I don't think Don G "needs" El Talisman, but really really wants it, to the point of obsession. Evidently, it really is a beautiful piece of property that anyone would love to own, but Don B would never consider selling it to Don G given their bad history. This is why women who play hard to get are smart. Guys tend to want what they can't have. Hear that, Lucrecia?

We haven't heard from Elle today. She was worried that her Dish Network would not carry El Tal. Elle? Are you out there?

R la O

Emarie, funny. I just checked birthdates and Julieta Rosen is about 16 years older than Blanca Soto, so the mother/daughter relationship is possible. The funny thing is Julieta looks young for her age and Blanca Soto has a mature look. So yeah, it's kind of disconcerting.

Calling Elle, Calling Elle! I hope you check in.

"Telenovios" was Susanlynn's coinage -- but I have commandeered it as part of my vocabulary from here on out! "Midriff Heaven" was, of course, our Carlos.

Gawd--I haven't even gotten past "who looks like she's riding a rocking horse" and I'm peeing my pants laughing! Bien hecho!

OMG Cynderella and Sylvia, you guys have me twisting over laughing out loud...
from Tyra would be proud, the rocking horse, the 4th quarter gatorade splashing, and that 18 wheeler contents spilling out! Including the goats and chickens! LOL!!
also the two 102 y. o. men fighting over a dead woman in a gasket... did i miss something?
HYSTERICAL!! now how am I going to match that tomorrow? but certainly so far this is going to be a cheese fest...
and so true that it seemed it was the women visit Pedro day... how many was that? 6 total?
Mariana, Lu-craz-ia, the cook nutsy girl, Camila...
so nice of him to help the women and kids of the truck... but his facial expression when Mariana decided to cover up for him out of the blue was priceless!

OMG! Cinderella! A laugh a minute. Never read your recaps before, but am glad to have made your acquaintance!

==

Capn Sylvia: Loved reading your invaluable witticisms again, amiga! Laugh a minute from both of you recappers for this one!
