La Traición, Fri, June 27 - Grand finale

Alcides' fantasy

Reality

Alcides demonstrates his markmanship skills

Hugo mourns his brother

Happy together at last - the end

So this it, folks. All things considered, they wrapped it up better than I thought they could in one hour. It’s been my privilege and pleasure to recap this novella. As I have said, I intend to go back and do recaps of the early episodes. If anyone wants to be notified when one is posted, send your email address to: jmbickal@yahoo.com and I’ll let you know.

Soledad gives Dr. Dan his ring back. She says that she has caused him great pain and asks him to forgive her. Dr. Dan says that he sensed that he was losing her. He asked what caused her to make this decision? Soledad says that she doesn’t want him to feel that way because of her. Dr. Dan says that for two years he ran away from love and lived like a hermit. He felt that way until the day Soledad came into his life. She lit up his life and now her words have left him in the dark again. Soledad says that she is just an ordinary woman with faults. She doesn’t deserve to be thought of that way. Dr. Dan says that she is the woman of his dreams and he loves her. Soledad thanks him for all his feelings and for all that he has done for her and her family but she can’t lie to herself, she can’t deceive herself. She says that she needs to tell him that she has always loved Hugo. Dr. Dan struggles to be able to speak. He says that he always knew that Hugo’s part of the story hadn’t ended yet. He asks if Soledad knows why he didn’t leave her. He says that it was because deep down he hoped that one day she would love him a little bit. Soledad says that she does love him. He is her friend and the love she feels for him is very special. “I know that I have lost you,” says Dr. Dan, “and I have to let you go away from me.” He embraces her and says that at least he has always has her smile and that is something that no one can take away from him. Soledad thanks Dr. Dan for understanding and says that she wishes she could return his feelings but it’s too late for her. The day she met Hugo she gave her heart to him forever. Dr. Dan asks her forgiveness too for not telling her he was divorced. Soledad says that is not necessary. It is all in the past. Dr. Dan has to live in the present now and be happy. “No,” says Dr. Dan, “I just lost the woman of my dreams and I don’t know how to get her out of my heart.” Soledad tells not to do it then. There will always be a very important place in her heart for him. She leaves. “Goodbye Soledad,” says Dr. Dan, “goodbye forever. I hope you are very happy.”

At the cabaret, Eloisa tells Paquito that Manuela is Dr. Dan’s wife brought to town by Alcides to discredit Dr. Dan with Soledad. She says that the plan failed when Hugo unmasked her. Paquito says that he knew she was wicked (‘una fiera,’ literally, ‘a wild beast’). Paquito says that compared to Manuela, Eloisa is a sweet dove (‘una dulce paloma’).

Manrique comes to talk to ‘George’ when she is on break. He congratulates her on the magnificent way she plays. He introduces himself and we find out that Manrique’s first name is ‘Elias.’ He tells Antonia that he wanted to take piano lessons from her but he understands that isn’t possible. He says that he has found someone else to give him lessons or at least he hope so – Antonia de Obragon. He says that he has had problems with her family but he likes her. He says that she is a woman of strong character, like him but a completely a lady. He tells ‘George’ that he finds Antonia very attractive. ‘George’ looks at Manrique like he is crazy.

At Arturo’s house, Gladis walks in and sees Arturo’s stump. “Santo Cielo!” she exclaims, “What happened to your hand?”

Manuela goes up to Paquito and asks him if she isn’t what he needs for his cabaret. Paquito says that he likes what he saw. “Then pay me,” says Manuela. Paquito puts some money in her cleavage as an advance. She leaves with Paquito gazing after her open mouthed. Eloisa comes over and closes his mouth. She tells him that she doesn’t like Manuela. She has a bad feeling about her and thinks that Paquito shouldn’t have hired her. Paquito says he thinks Eloisa is jealous. Eloisa denies it.

Arturo says that now Gladis knows about his shame. This is why he will never get married. His medals and his family name don’t matter because he is a monster. Gladis asks how this terrible thing happened. Arturo says that Alcides chained him up in a cabin full of gunpowder and he had to cut off his hand to escape. Gladis asks why Alcides did this. Arturo says that Alcides knew that Arturo wanted to kill him. Arturo wanted to take vengeance on Alcides because he killed his sister Beatriz. Gladis looks like she is having a heart attack. Arturo says again that Alcides de Medina killed Beatriz. It’s too much for Gladis. She says that it isn’t true. Beatriz is alive and will return very soon. Arturo tells Gladis again that Alcides killed Beatriz and she isn’t coming back. Gladis screams in denial and now she has lost her mind. She repeats over and over that Beatriz is coming back and she will wait for her.

At the cabaret, Paquito is paying the staff. Eloisa is tired and wants to go home. Paquito says that they have to talk. He asks her what she said to Alcides because Paquito thinks Eloisa touched his heart. Eloisa says that Alcides is not doing well. She says that Paquito doesn’t know the horrible things that Alcides went through. Things she wouldn’t wish on her worst enemy. Paquito tells her not to exaggerate. Eloisa says that in addition, if Alcides keeps up his obsession with Soledad, it will end very badly.

Alcides is dozing in a chair at the Hacienda. “Alcides,” says Soledad, coming into the room. He sits up, “I knew you were looking for me,” she says. Alcides asks Soledad how it went with his brother. Soledad says that she only went to see Hugo to clear her thoughts. She tells Alcides that she has made a decision. “What is it?” asks Alcides smiling at her. “I want to be yours,” says Soledad. She says that she has been thinking about it a lot and Alcides is the man for her. Alcides puts Soledad in his lap and says that she is the love of his life. They start to kiss and suddenly Alcides sees in the mirror that he is alone, holding nothing. It was a dream, a fantasy. In a fury, he throws a bottle and breaks the mirror. Reality hits him like a physical blow. “I’ve lost her, (‘la perdí)” he says, “If she’s forgiven Hugo, I’ve lost her.” He chokes back tears, “I’ve lost her.” Then he gets calmer and speaks to himself in the third person, “Just a minute, Alcides, just a minute. If she isn’t for you, then no one can have her.”

Ursula tells Soledad that she saw Boris and Marina naked in bed. Ursula says that Boris betrayed her. Soledad says that it seems very strange. Boris has always been a very honest person. She suggests that it could have been Marina trying to keep Ursula and Boris apart. Soledad says that Marina is capable of anything. Ursula say that she would like to thing that Marina was behind the whole thing but she has doubts. Ursula says that she can’t believe Boris. She can’t. Soledad hugs her and says that tomorrow they will go to the Hacienda and confront Marina. She will have to tell the truth.

The next morning Arturo is looking for his mother. He finds her in a chair, dead. There is a bottle of some powder by her chair. She has killed herself. (She changed out of her nightgown into a black dress to kill herself.) “What have you done, Mother?” asks Arturo. He kisses her forehead. “Alcides de Medina, I swear your time has come. I swear it.” (We can start the body count: one down. Although she didn’t kill anyone, Gladis knew what her son was up to. She was a nasty piece of work.)

Paquito is stacking up money in his office. He tells himself that he is a genius and very soon he will be rich and Eloisa will marry him. The door opens to the judge and two policemen. The judge tells Paquito that Deborah’s body has been found. The judge says that he understands that Deborah worked for Paquito. Paquito flashes back to finding her body. The judge says that she had a wound in the neck in the shape of a hook. Paquito says nervously that he doesn’t know anything about it. The judge tells him not to be nervous. He isn’t being accused – yet. The judge notices a hand peeking out from under a sheet. Apparently, Paquito didn’t check his office for dead bodies before he started counting his money. The judge pulls back the sheet to reveal Manuela’s body with the same kind of wound in the neck. Paquito desperately says that Manuela just came to town and he just hired her… The judge orders Paquito arrested for the two murders. He is taken out protesting. (That the last we see of Paquito – two down.)

Alcides tells Hercu-less to prepare everything as he as instructed. He says that there is not time to lose. Herc starts to object. “No buts, (‘no hay peros que valgan,’ literally, ‘there are no ‘buts’ that are worth anything.’)” says Alcides holding Herc by the neck with his cane, “this is your most important mission for me.” Alcides tells Herc to go and he goes. Eloisa comes in asks why he sent for her so early. Alcides tells her to go to the treasure vault and get all the gold and jewels she can carry. She asks what she will say? “Eloisa!” yells Alcides, “do what I tell you and don’t ask questions.” Eloisa say that she recognizes his expression and asks him not to do anything crazy. Alcides tells her to be back in an hour or he’ll cut her head off.

We hear Soledad calling Alcides from downstairs. Alcides tells Eloisa to go without letting Soledad see her. Soledad comes in with Ursula and the baby. Alcides smiles and says that this is a nice surprise. He wasn’t expecting her. Soledad says that they are looking for Marina. Alcides asks why. Soledad says that Marina laid a trap for Boris to make Ursula think that they were still together. Alcides replies that that is completely false. Marina and Hercu-less have been lovers since Marina came back to the house. Ursula gives a sigh of relief.
A: Soledad, no one can touch you here, not your family, not your employees, not your living, not your dead. No one can lay a finger on you (‘nadie te puede tocar ni con el pétalo de una rosa,’ literally, ‘no one can touch you even with a rose petal'). (Soledad and Ursula look at Alcides like he has lost his mind.) (to Ursula) Don’t worry, I’ll see to it that Marina gets what she deserves.
S: Fine. If you’re taking care of it, I’ll be going.
A: Soledad wait. I have something very important to tell you. (he smiles) You’re leaving this house, of course you are, but you’re leaving with me.

Hercu-less says good morning to Margot. She slaps him and asks where he was the previous night – with that slut? Herc says that he slept in the hotel because he wanted her to calm down. Herc says that he is there to say goodbye. He’s leaving with his boss. He says that Alcides has gone mad and is going to kidnap Soledad. Margot says that Herc will go to jail or be killed. Herc says that he doesn’t have an alternative. If he betrays Alcides the way he did with Arturo, he will be a dead man.

In his house, Arturo gets his gun out.

At the Hacienda-
A: Please don’t be upset. Eloisa will be here any moment.
S: Eloisa? Why Eloisa?
A: You’ll know soon enough.
S: We’d better leave.
A: Soledad, the only way you can leave her without me is if I’m dead.
S: What? Alcides.
A: Soledad, you got engaged to my brother, Hugo. You finally told him yes.
S: Hugo told you?
A: No, no, he didn’t tell me. I found out on my own.

Hugo (in a spiffy red jacket) tells Boris in the forge that he didn’t know that making swords could be so profitable. He counts how much the collector paid him. Boris says that the collector ordered more. He tells Hugo that he deserves it after all his hard work. Hugo says that Boris has worked hard too. Margot calls to Hugo (for whatever reason, this was obviously shot when the actors weren’t in the same place). She tells him that Hercu-less told her that Alcides is planning to kidnap Soledad. They are at the Hacienda. She says that Alcides plans to take her away from San Marino by force. She begs Hugo to save Soledad and her Herc. “Let’s go,” says Hugo to Boris.

Marina comes in to see Arturo. He asks what she is doing there. She says that Alcides threw her out of his house like a dog. She has come to offer information in exchange for money. Arturo tells her to tell him all she knows. Marina says that Alcides is leaving the Hacienda with Soledad. He has kidnapped Soledad. Arturo asks how she knows this. Marina says that Hercu-less told her. “Excellent,” says Arturo, “the whole family will be there together.” Marina asks to be paid. Arturo asks her to wait a minute and he will pay her well. Marina says that she hopes he will be generous. Arturo opens a drawer and there is a hook, a la Captain Hook. (Arturo must have taken the one from Dr. Max that he initially refused or gotten another from someplace.) Marina says that the information she gave Arturo is very valuable. Marina is looking around. She notices Gladis and asks what is wrong with Arturo’s mother. Arturo (holding his hook behind him) says that his mother is dead. “It the fate of everyone,” he says, “to die. By the way, here is your payment.” He stabs Marina with the hook simultaneously flashing back to killing Deborah and Manuela. “Now it is your turn, Alcides.” (Three down.)

Eloisa has come to the Obragon house and tells Antonia that she wants to see Soledad. Antonia says that Soledad, Ursula and the baby went out. Eloisa says that she will wait for Soledad in her room. Antonia starts to ask why when the guard comes to say that Elias Manrique has come to see Antonia. Antonia tells Eloisa to wait and goes to see Manrique. Eloisa goes right inside the house.

Manrique says to Antonia that he is a man of few words. He has come to insist that she accept his offer to teach him to play the piano. (Cut to Eloisa going into Soledad’s room and opening the door to the treasure vault.) Antonia tells Manrique that she has only heard bad things about him. Manrique says that he isn’t proud of what he did. He regrets it and want to make it up to the family, especially Antonia. Antonia says that she isn’t interested and turns away. Manrique says that he won’t bother her for very long. He has a terminal illness and not much time left. He begs Antonia to fulfill at least half of his wish and teach him to play the piano.

At the Hacienda-
S: Alcides, Please. Let us go.
A: Soledad. Be patient. We’ll leave soon.
Hercu-less comes in and says that everything is ready. The coach is waiting.
A: You see. Now all we have to do is wait for Eloisa and we can leave.
S: Eloisa will go to the police. You know that she is my friend.
A: Money is her only friend, my love.
S: Alcides, you’re not well. Please, calm down. Let us go.
A: My brother always gets the best part (We see Hugo coming up the stairs, gun in hand.) This time he won’t.
Alcides simultaneously shoots the guns out of Hugo’s and Boris’ hands.
S: You’ve killed him!
H: You’ve gone crazy!
A: Don’t worry, my love. I have the world’s best aim (all those watermelons didn’t die in vain!) (to Hugo) One more move like that and I’ll forget you are my little brother.
H: You can’t take Soledad. Not with me here.
A: Who said I was taking her?
H: I knew you would do something crazy when you found out that Soledad and I had reconciled.
A: (to Hercu-less) What are you waiting for? Tie them up, stupid. (to Soledad) You’re dressed as Snow White (she’s actually wearing pink but Alcides has gone crazy so maybe he’s seeing things) You are more beautiful than ever. (He holsters his guns.) Eloisa won’t be long.

Eloisa is stuffing a bag with treasure. She says that she has to hurry before that witch Antonia finds her. She finds the tiara and says that this time she is taking it with her. She sees Michelle’s sword and picks it up. “Poor (stupid) thing,” she says, “to think that you are buried down here.” She says that she has to hurry. She puts the sword down and in doing so, she cuts a trip wire and is shot by an arrow.

At the Hacienda-
A: Eloisa is taking too long. We’d better go. We’ll come back for Eloisa. Let go.
S: No. I’m not moving from here.
A: (talking like a little boy) My love, let’s go. Soledad, what do you call a person who is capable of killing his own brother? A fratricide?
S: No, please don’t.
A: Let’s go.
Hercu-less goes to where Hugo and Boris are tied up. (Hugo either knows that it is useless to argue with his brother or we don’t have time for that.) Herc tells Hugo that the knot he tied can easily be undone and he leaves Hugo’s gun with him. Alcides says that it is time to go and Herc says that he is just making sure that Hugo and Boris can’t escape.

Antonia says that she agrees to teach Manrique to play the piano. Manrique thanks her and says that she doesn’t know what this means to him. Antonia says that she does know. Dr. Dan appears. Manrique leaves. Ester comes running out and says that someone is in Soledad’s room calling for help and the door is locked.

Eloisa has made it back to Soledad’s room with an arrow in her stomach. She manages to break the arrow off. She tries to close the door to the treasure vault but at that moment, Dr. Dan and Ester break in. Ester, Antonia and Lucas ask where the heck that door came from while Dr. Dan tends to Eloisa.
E: Daniel. Don’t let me die.
DD: What happened?
E: (gasping) Stupid Michelle …
DD: Michelle?
E: Michelle is down there…
DD: Michelle is down there?
E: She got her revenge. Daniel, don’t let me die…
DD: Calm down.
E: Don’t let me… (she dies)
Dr. Dan says that Eloisa is dead. Everyone is impactados. Lucas says that they have to inform the authorities.
(Four down)

Alcides, Soledad, Ursula, the blanket named Aurora and Hercu-less are outside the Hacienda.
S: Alcides, please, listen to me. You are acting very strangely. You’re not yourself.
A: Soledad. Life is strange. Death is strange. Love, it’s all strange. Please, get in (the carriage).
S: No. I’m not going anywhere. I’m not leaving with you. I love Hugo. I’ve always loved him. You can’t make me.
A: Of course I can.
S: Then you’ll have to kill me because I’m not leaving with you (‘con tigo no me voy.’).
Alcides tosses Herc his cane. He smiles very strangely and kisses Soledad. She slaps him. He grabs her and kisses her by force.
A: You are mine. You are mine and no one else’s. You are mine.
Arturo come up, “Alcides!” he yells. Alcides pushes Soledad away and tells her to take cover. Arturo shoots Alcides and then Hercu-less. He shoots Alcides again and Alcides falls to the ground. The baby is crying. “I hope you rot in hell, Alcides de Medina,” says Arturo. He turns to Soledad, “Now it’s your turn, Soledad. It’s nothing personal but you and your daughter must pay.” Ursula begs him not to do it. They are innocent. Arturo raises his gun and he is shot in the chest by Hugo who is standing behind him. Arturo turns towards Hugo and Boris who just stand there while Arturo raises his gun again. This enables Alcides to get his guns out from underneath him (he was lying on his back) and shoot Arturo several times. (Five down)

Hugo comes over to Soledad and asks if she is all right. “He killed your brother, Alcides,” says Soledad. Hugo kneels beside Alcides. “You won again,” he says, “You won the last battle.” Hugo takes his hand. Alcides calls Soledad. “I’ve always loved you,” he says, “Always,” He kisses her. “My only sin was to have loved you.” He dies. Hugo leans over and closes his eyes. “He was shot in the heart,” he says, his eyes full of tears. (Six down, I guess)

Ursula interrupts to say that something is wrong with Aurora. She thinks the shots frightened her. Hugo says that she is very cold. She needs to go to the chamber. They run into the house leaving Arturo and Alcides dead (and presumably Hercu-less) dead on the ground.

In the treasure vault, Ester asks how it is possible that such a treasure could have been under their house. Lucas says that it has to be Jeremias’ treasure. The judge is there too. Dr. Dan is holding Michelle’s sword. He tells the judge that he knows this sword. It is Michelle’s and he has bad feeling about that. An officer says that they found a will in one of the chests in which Jeremias leaves all his fortune to Soledad. Impactados looks all around. Boris comes running in and says that Aurora is very ill.

At the Hacienda, Soledad asks that nothing bad happen to her baby. Hugo is operating the thermal chamber. “Nothing bad will happen to our daughter. It’s just that this time she has had a very serious attack. It was too much pressure: the gun shots, the screaming.” Soledad says that she must live. Dr. Dan arrives. Hugo says that baby vital signs are very weak. Soledad begs them to save her. Dr. Dan says that there is only one thing left to do. He says that a blood transfusion is the only thing that can save the baby. Hugo says then let’s do it. His daughter must be saved. Dr. Dan says that it is risky. Since he hasn’t had time to finish his tests, if Hugo and the baby’s blood aren’t compatible they could both die. “Do it, Doctor,” says Hugo, “I will do whatever it takes to save my daughter. I am ready to take the risk.” Dr. Dan says that he needs Soledad’s authorization as well. Soledad asks what their chances are. Dr. Dan says that he won’t know the results until the transfusions are over.

Five years later. Soledad is on the steps of the Hacienda reading a letter she has written:
Dear Daniel:
It’s been five years since you left San Marino and your letter brought back such memories. I am very glad you know that you are married and happy with your wife. I am pleased that you decided to name your daughter, Soledad, after me. Here in San Marino, many things have happened. For example, Boris and Ursula got married and have two precious babies. In addition, Boris and Hugo are world famous for the swords they make. Margot bought the tavern and runs it with Hercu-less. Their latest show is doing very well. My father finally recovered. Mother and father forgave each other and spend their time writing love letters to each other. It’s a way of showing how much they love each other. They finally made their peace with Hugo and they get along very well. Every year we visit Michelle’s grave in her city. We remember her with great affection. It was terrible for us to find out that she had died at the hands of Alcides. We gave Jeremias’ fortune to charity in the city. You can’t imagine how big a hospital we have now with lots of doctors. I didn’t deserve that inheritance since I’m not Jeremias’ daughter. With respect to my daughter, Aurora, she is so big and pretty and she loves her father. I am very happy.

Hugo comes down the stairs of the Hacienda with Aurora as a little girl. He kisses another baby.
H: Our life couldn’t be any better. Our daughter was finally cured. Huguito was born healthy. We love each other.
S: Our dreams are a reality. I love you.
H: And I love you. I love you.
They kiss.
Fin.

La Traición, Thurs., June 26 - Hugo and Soledad appear to reconcile; Dr. Dan has a bad night; Marina breaks up Boris and Ursula

Soledad comes to reconcile with Hugo

Alcides invites Dr. Dan to fight with him man to man

Alcides' killer expression

Alcides gets the best of Dr. Dan

Soledad gives Dr. Dan his engagement ring back

Eloisa asks Alcides to tell her what happened to Beatriz. Alicides tells her that he killed Beatriz in self defense. He flashes back to Beatriz stabbing him and him cutting her throat. He tells Eloisa about Vlad saving him and teaching him to live in equilibrium and not respond with violence. Eloisa then says that she doesn’t understand how Alcides ended up with Jeremias’ treasure. Alcides smiles and says that he won’t tell her that. Alcides says that after regaining most of his memory, he could only think of one thing – Soledad. He repeated her name day and night and something changed inside of him. Eloisa says that of course Alcides changed after everything he went through. She says that things didn’t turn out so badly for him – he is immensely rich and he is fortunate to have her to help him. Alcides doesn’t seem to be too happy with that thought. He asks Eloisa to leave him alone so that he can put things in their place.

Someone comes to get Margot saying that Hercu-less is going to be killed in a fight in the bar.

Antonia tells Soledad that she learned late in life that she was wrong but Soledad has time. She can still forgive. Antonia starts praising Daniel. Soledad stops her. She says that she has forgiven Dr. Dan but Antonia knows that Soledad loves Hugo. Antonia says that she doesn’t like Hugo or his brother. Antonia admits that Hugo did give Soledad a beautiful daughter and he is trying to win her heart back. Soledad says that Hugo has given her many proofs that he loves her. Antonia counsels Soledad not to wait. Open her heart. If Hugo is her true love, Soledad should resolve their differences. Soledad says that it isn’t that easy. Antonia says that it is easy if she lets her heart lead. Soledad shouldn’t end up like Antonia. She waited years for perfection that never came. Antonia tells Soledad to love without fear and be very happy.

A letter is delivered for Ursula. It says that she should go to the Hacienda Montenegro to see how her boyfriend cheats. It’s not signed. (It shouldn't be too hard to guess who it might be from, eh Ursula?) Ursula wonders why Boris would be at the Hacienda.

Boris comes into Marina’s room at the Hacienda. Marina is waiting for him in a provocative dress. Boris says that he has come to talk. He says that she told him she wanted money in exchange for consenting to a divorce. He hands her the ring and says that should be sufficient. Marina looks at the ring.

At the cabaret, the fighters have been separated. Hercu-less says to Arturo that it isn’t over. Paquito orders him thrown out of the place. Margot comes in. Herc calls for her to come with him as he is dragged out but Margot just stands there.

Marina looks at the ring and says that it is a valuable heirloom from Hugo’s family. She asks if Boris stole it. Boris says that he just wants her to sign the divorce papers. Marina is in no hurry. She says they should have a drink to celebrate his freedom. She puts something into one of the wine glasses. She asks to have things end nicely for all the good times they had and that she was to be the mother of his child. Just one toast. She holds out the glass with the (presumably) drugged wine and asks him to do it for her.

Soledad says that Ursula seems very distracted. Ursula asks permission to go out. Soledad says that it is late. Ursula says that it is important and she will explain later. Soledad tells her to be careful. Ursula leaves. Soledad flashes back to Antonia’s advice to follow her heart. Ester asks what happened with Antonia. She’s not in her room. Soledad says that everything is fine. Antonia is probably giving her piano lesson. They talked about the past. Many wounds need to be healed. Soledad says that she wants to ask her mother a very important favor.

Margot is trying to tend to Arturo’s bruises from the fight but he pushes her away. He says that Herc reminded him, to his face, of his ED problem. Margot never should have told Herc about that. Margot says that she had to. Herc was very jealous when he found them in bed and that was the only way he would let her alone. Arturo says that it is Margot’s fault that Herc made the ED remark in front of everyone. Margot says that Arturo doesn’t have an ED problem. He has shown her that he was a real man several times. His problem is in the head, not the other place. Arturo angrily says that he doesn’t want Margot’s compassion. Margot asks what Arturo wants from her then. Arturo says that Margot has to decide whether she wants to be with him forever. He wants to marry her.

Boris drinks the drugged wine and conveniently falls unconscious on Marina’s bed.

Paquito waits impatiently for Antonia to show up to play the piano. She arrives. Manuela is in the bar and she says that she is answering an ad Paquito placed for a beautiful woman to work with him. She’s that person.

Marina has gotten Boris undressed and she is in bed with him in a pose that suggests they just had sex. Ursula comes in and sees them. Marina says that they had a few drinks and one thing led to another. Ursula is upset.

Soledad comes to see Hugo, who is in a dressing gown.
H: Hello Soledad. I wasn’t expecting you. If I knew you were coming, I would have worn something more presentable.
S: Don’t worry. I didn’t mean to intrude. I came because.. I don’t know where to begin.
H: You look beautiful.
S: I feel terrible. I’m so confused. I needed to talk to you.
Hugo asks her to sit down.
H: Is our daughter all right?
S: Yes, she’s fine. I left her with my mother. After everything that happened today, I need to clarify many things. About you, about us. Hugo, I can’t go on living with all these doubts and tears. I need peace. That’s why I came here. I need for us to clear things up.

Boris wakes up. He tells Ursula that he can explain. Ursula says that there is nothing to explain. Marina says that Boris still loves her. Boris tries to get away from Marina. He says that things aren’t as they appear. Ursula cries.

Paquito is doing his job interview. He says that Manuela is very attractive but he needs to see more. She raises her skirt to show her thigh. He asks about her experience. Manuela says that depends. She has a lot of experience with men. Paquito asks her to audition, as it were.

Margot asks if Arturo is crazy. Is he making fun of her? Arturo says that he has never been so serious. Margot says that Arturo is from one of the most prestigious families in San Marino. How could he want to marry her? Arturo says that he doesn’t care about any of that. Will Margot marry him? She laughs.

Ursula asks how Boris could fool her and play with her feelings. Boris says that he didn’t betray her. Marina put something in his wine. Ursula tells Boris to stay with Marina and not come looking for her ever again. She leaves. Marina tells him not to be upset. He’s lost Ursula. Boris says that she will never succeed in separating him from Ursula.

Manrique says that ‘George’ is a virtuoso who should be in a concert hall not a cabaret. Hercu-less comes back into the bar and gives Paquito a wad of cash for the best bottle in the house. Paquito asks where he has been getting his money (‘¿quien es la gallinita de los huevos de oro?’ literally, ‘who is the hen with the golden eggs.’) since everyone knows he is a bum (‘un vago y vividor,’ literally, a vagrant and a sponger’) Herc asks if Paquito is going to serve him or should he go somewhere else. Paquito warns him against getting drunk or making a scene. Manuela, now in a skimpy chorus girl outfit, comes over to where Herc is sitting.

Margot has decided that Arturo is proposing to her to make Hercu-less jealous. Arturo asks what he can do to convince her he is serious. Arturo says that he will organize a huge party to announce his engagement to Margot. (Mom’s going to love that idea.)

Dr. Dan is in the lab. He says that if his chemical formula is correct, he can save Aurora. Dr. Dan turns and Alcides is there. Alcides asks where Soledad is. Dr. Dan says that she isn’t with him and suggests that she is at her house. Alcides says that he just came from there and she isn’t home. Dr. Dan asks if Alcides is sure. Maybe Soledad didn’t want to see him. Dr. Dan says that Alcides will have to take his word that Soledad isn’t here. Alcides takes off his jacket saying that he is tired of Dr. Dan’s insolence. He is tired of having Dr. Dan stand between him and Soledad. Dr. Dan says that he is tired of Alcides’ threats. Alcides says that he isn’t making threats. Only one of them will leave this place alive tonight. Guess who? (So much for giving up violence, Alcides.)

Manuela tells Hercu-less that Alcides’ brother found out about her and Herc says that his wife found out about him too. Manuela says that they both had the same bad luck. Herc replies that is true, for now. Herc says that he knows he will get his wife back. She loves him a lot.

Margot says that she can’t marry Arturo. Everyone knows who she is. She has worked in the tavern for years. Arturo says he doesn’t care. Margot says that he will care when he is in the street and people whisper that he married a slut. Arturo says that no one would dare say that about his wife. He would kill anyone who said such things. Margot says that Arturo would have to start with his mother. “She hates me,” says Margot, “she looks at me like a cockroach or worse. She will make my life impossible.” Margot says that she wants a poor but tranquil life with a man who… Arturo asks what she means and then he realizes that she doesn’t want to marry him because of the ED problem.

At the cabaña, Soledad looks at Hugo and flashes back to the first time she was there with him.

Alcides takes off his guns. He says that he isn’t going to shoot Dr. Dan and be arrested. He wants to fight like two men without arms. Dr. Dan says that he is a peaceful man. He isn’t afraid of Alcides but he won’t kill him. Dr. Dan takes off his gun. Alcides says in that case, he know who will die today because he will kill any man who comes between him and Soledad. They start to fight. Alcides says that Dr. Dan isn’t a bad fighter for a ‘doctorcillo.’

Margot says that it is true. She is a woman and she wants a man who loves and respects her and can give her children. Arturo can’t give her children. Arturo leaves.

Boris says that he regrets making Marina a part of his life. Ursula didn’t deserve that. Marina says that she got what she wanted. Ursula will never go back to him. Boris says that he will explain how Marina set all this up. Ursula will understand. Boris takes the ring back. He says that Marina didn’t keep her word. He will get a divorce somehow. He leaves. Marina says that they will see who wins this battle.

Alcides says that he didn’t want to go this far but Dr. Dan left him no alternative. Dr. Dan never should have looked at Soledad. Dr. Dan says that Alcides has gone crazy. Soledad will never be interested in him. Alcides says that he loves Soledad and he has shown it by his good acts. Dr. Dan asks if his ‘good acts’ include bringing his wife to town to destroy his reputation. That was a cowardly act. A respectable man would never do something that low. Dr. Dan goes for his whip. He gets the whip around Alcides’ neck but Alcides swings around and gets behind Dr. Dan. Alcides says that all is fair in love and war and this is the end for Dr. Dan.

Still holding Dr. Dan by the neck, Alcides says that he could exterminate Dr. Dan with one move like he could kill a mosquito. “Just do it,” says Dr. Dan. Alcides says that he isn’t a murderer. He’s never liked killing people. He doesn’t want to kill Dr. Dan but he doesn’t have any other option. Dr. Dan says that Alcides is a murderer. By killing him, Alcides isn’t just killing one person, he’s killing two people. Alcides asks what he means. Dr. Dan says that he is the only one who can cure Aurora’s catalepsy. If Alcides kills him, he destroys Aurora’s future. Alcides says that Dr. Dan isn’t the only doctor who knows about catalepsy. Dr. Dan says he is the only one who can cure Aurora. Alcides says that he offered Dr. Dan money and help to find a cure but Dr. Dan always turned him down. Dr. Dan tells Alcides that he cured Hugo of catalepsy.

Ursula comes into Soledad’s room. Ester is there. She asks why Ursula is crying. Ursula says that she found out that Boris was unfaithful to her with Marina. He still loves Marina. He betrayed her.

Alcides says that that Dr. Dan is making this up (‘me está tomando el pelo,’ literally ‘taking the hair') as his strategy to gain time… Dr. Dan says that he did cure Hugo. Alcides releases Dr. Dan from the neck lock. He ask how Hugo was cured. Dr. Dan says that it was the result of the work by his father and Michelle. Alcides asks how Hugo is cured but not his niece. Dr. Dan explains about the good blood stuff that Hugo has and about the flower. Alcides asks when Hugo was cured and Dr. Dan says that it was when he was broken out of prison. He says that Hugo was having a catalepsy attack and Soledad herself gave him the injection. “It’s true then,” says Alcides, “My brother Hugo is cured of catalepsy and he never told me.” He says that explains some things that didn’t make sense.

Ursula says that she doesn’t understand why Boris lied to her that way. Why did he raise her hopes if he still loved Marina? Ester says men are like that. She knows from experience. Ursula shows Ester the letter that Boris sent her as evidence of Boris’ affections. Ester tells her that Boris didn’t write the letter. It’s Lucas’ handwriting.

In the cabaña, Hugo and Soledad are making love.

Alcides asks why the flower cured Hugo but can’t cure his niece. Dr. Dan tells him that Aurora doesn’t have the good blood stuff. Dr. Dan explains that to determine if Aurora can be cured of catalepsy, he needs to test hers and Hugo’s blood. If they are compatible, the cure will work. If not he will have to try with Michelle’s blood. Alcides flashes back to killing Michelle. He says that he hopes Hugo’s blood is compatible. Alcides puts his jacket back on. He says that Dr. Dan is lucky. He can’t die because he needs to cure Aurora. Dr. Dan says that Alcides doesn’t have to ask him, he wants to do it. Alcides asks him how much money he needs. Dr. Dan says that he doesn’t need any of Alcides’ filthy money. All he needs are samples of Hugo’s and Aurora’s blood. Alcides says that he will keep an eye on Dr. Dan’s work. For his own good, he should stay away from Soledad. Dr. Dan says that he won’t give Soledad up ever. “First, cure Aurora,” says Alcides, “then we can talk.” Dr. Dan asks if Alcides’ words mean that he is sentenced to death? “One of us will go to hell before the other, that is certain,” says Alcides and leaves.

Manuela’s performance at the cabaret is well received. Eloisa comes into the place and asks herself what Manuela is doing there.

Ester tells Ursula about Lucas love-letter writing business. She says that maybe Boris ordered a letter. Lucas comes in and tells Ester what what she just did was wrong. Why is she killing Ursula’s hopes? She shouldn’t disclose the identity of his clients. Ester tells Lucas that it was necessary to tell Ursula in this case because she found Boris in bed with his former wife. Lucas says that he is sorry but she must confront Boris. He is here to see Ursula. Boris tells Ursula how Marina set the whole thing up by pretending to agree to divorce him for money. When Ursula asks where Boris was going to get the money, Boris shows her the ring Hugo gave him. Ursula says that she might believe Boris if it weren’t for the letter. The letter was written by Lucas and Boris’ feelings are as false as his words. She never wants to see him again.

Soledad leaves Hugo’s bedroom. She says to herself, “Why are we playing with fate’s error? We forgave. Now we should forget. Let’s have another chance.” When she is gone. Hugo picks up an earring that she has left. Soledad tells the coachman that she wants to leave very quietly so that no one hears. He asks if they are going home. Soledad says that she will tell him where to go when they are on the road.

Dr. Dan says to himself that Alcides is right. One of them will die first but it will be Alcides who goes to hell. He smashes something as Soledad comes in. She tries to find out what happened but Dr. Dan won’t tell her. Soledad tells him what a wonderful guy he is and she will always be grateful that he saved her father and cured Hugo and is trying to cure her daughter.. Dr. Dan interrupts and says that he has the feeling she is saying all this because she is going to drop a bombshell on him (‘me vas a dar una estocada,’ literally, ‘you are going to give me a thrust (with a sword’)) Dr. Dan says that she should cut to the chase. Soledad gives him back his engagement ring saying that she can’t give him love. The credits roll.

Tomorrow- Grand finale!

La Traición, Wed., June 26 - We explore how various characters reacted to betrayal and suffering

Hugo is devastated to learn that Soledad kissed Alcides

What good are material posessions if you can't help your best friend?

Soledad and Ursula exchange confidences

Alcides tells Eloisa how Beatriz tortured him

Yesterday we finished with Soledad saying to Hugo:
S: Have you spoken with your brother, Alcides? Did he tell you what happened?

The conversation continues:
H: I just spoke to my brother, Alcides. He also asked if you had told me something. Soledad, what happened when I was gone?
Soledad flashes back to Alcides telling her that he isn’t Hugo.
H: What are you hiding? What are you hiding from me Soledad?

At this moment Dr. Dan and Manuela approach. Manuela mistakes Hugo for Alcides and asks what he is doing there. Soledad asks if they know each other.

Boris is hammering away in the workshop and Marina comes in. “Don’t tell me that you’ve come to agree to a divorce,” he says. Marina says that she will sign but under one condition.

Lucas is looking for Ester but he finds Ursula who hastily hides a letter. She is crying. Lucas asks what is the matter. Why is she crying? What is she hiding? Ursula says that it is nothing; she is just a little emotional. Lucas asks her again why she is crying. Ursula makes Lucas promise that he won’t tell Ester and shows him the letter from Boris (actually written by Lucas). Ursula says that it is the most beautiful thing she has ever read.

Eloisa comes in to where Ester is sewing. Eloisa starts to make up some excuse about why she came back but Ester interrupts and produces the emerald that was found in Aurora’s chubby little hand. Ester asks if it is Eloisa’s.

Soledad asks why Manuela and Hugo don’t say anything. Are they acquainted? Manuela starts to make up something. Hugo interrupts.
H: The lady doesn’t know me but I know her.
DD: How is this possible? How long have you known Manuela?
H: She thinks she knows me because she is confusing me with my twin brother. Isn’t that so, Señora Manuela?
MM: Twin brother?
H: My name is Hugo de Medina.
MM: Pleased to meet you. Manuela Marín.
H: Yes, I know. I also know of your plans in San Marino.

Grateful to be provided an excuse, Eloisa says that the emerald is hers and that it fell out of a ring she was wearing when she was playing with Aurora. Ester says that Eloisa isn’t wearing a ring now. Eloisa replies that she took the ring off when she saw that the stone had fallen out. She has come back to the Obragon house to look for it. Ester gives her the jewel and says that it is lucky that Ursula found it before Aurora put it in her mouth. Eloisa agrees. Ester bids Eloisa good afternoon. Eloisa (who is trying to get into the treasure vault) asks to see Soledad but Ester says that she is still at the hospital. Eloisa has no choice but to leave. She says to herself that she can’t get the gold Alcides needs.
Manuela says that she doesn’t know what plan Hugo is talking about and Hugo replies that she has come with an evil plan (‘un proposito perverso’) to harm Dr. Dan. Soledad says that she has to see patients but Hugo asks her why she doesn’t want to hear the truth. Hugo tells them that by chance he was on the same train as Manuela and he saw her and Hercu-less, his brother’s servant, get on the train in Alcala. Hugo says that Manuela is in San Marino to do harm to Dr. Dan on the orders of Hugo’s brother, Alcides.

Lucas tells Ursula that her reaction to the letter tells him that she and Boris love each other very much. Ursula admits this. She says that she didn’t know what love was until she met Boris. Lucas says that Ursula loved Boris from the first moment she first saw him. Ursula admits this also but says that she stepped aside when she saw that Boris was in a relationship with Marina. She also had doubts when she thought Boris was working for Alcides before they all found out that he was really Hugo. She flashes back to asking Boris how he can work for Hugo’s worst enemy, Alcides. She says that now she knows that Boris never lied to her and that is why it hurts so much to think she might have to give him up. Lucas asks why Ursula would have to give Boris up and she says that Marina will not agree to divorce Boris and she doesn’t know what will happen.

Boris tells Marina that he thought for a second she had changed back to the old Marina, but no. Marina says that nothing in life is free. Why shouldn’t she get something in exchange for agreeing to a divorce? Boris asks what she wants. Marina says that she wants money – Boris’ liberty in exchange for money.

Dr. Dan asks Manuela if what Hugo said is true. Is she working with Alcides to make trouble between him and Soledad? Manuela starts to act out her story of the abandoned wife who still loves him. Hugo tells Soledad not to believe a single word. Soledad asks if it true that Manuela arrived with Hercu-less. Manuela spins a tale about meeting Hercules in the station and that he helped her find Dr. Dan. Hugo shakes his head in disbelief. He says that Manuela’s skill in lying is impressive. Manuela tells Dr. Dan that she loves him but DD says that Hugo is right. She is a liar. They haven’t seen each other in two years and she never answered his letters.

Boris laughs bitterly, “You’ll give me a divorce in exchange for money?” he says. He asks if Marina has forgotten that he doesn’t have a dime. He works as a blacksmith and barely makes enough to eat. Marina says that it isn’t true that Boris doesn’t have any money. She remembers that Boris had saved up a small fortune while working for Hugo. Boris says that all that money was spent helping Hugo and buying the blacksmith business. Marina laughs. She says it is too bad that once again Boris has put his life aside for Hugo because he isn’t getting a divorce for free. Boris says that he will do anything to get a divorce. There must be something they can agree to. Marina says maybe there is something. She asks him to come to the Hacienda that night to discuss it. Boris doesn’t want to go to the Hacienda.

Soledad says that she doesn’t know Manuela but it doesn’t make any sense that she would come all the way to San Marino to hurt Dr. Dan for Alcides. Hugo tells Soledad that she knows Alcides. For her, he is capable of anything. Dr. Dan says that he knows it was wrong to lie to Soledad about not being divorced but she shouldn’t believe a word that this woman is saying. Manuela starts to say that Dr. Dan put her through hell. He responds that it was a hell she made when she betrayed him with his best friend. Soledad suggests that he and Manuela talk in private. Dr. Dan says that he has nothing to say to Manuela. Hugo says that Manuela is not to be trusted (‘no es de fiar’). Soledad tells Hugo that he hasn’t said anything convincing. Hugo responds that a gentleman never talks about other people’s private lives but in this case, he has no alternative. Hugo apologizes in advance to the ladies for what he is going to say. Hugo says that on the train he witnessed indecent behavior between Manuela and Alcides’ servant. Dr. Dan is impactado.

Marina asks why Boris doesn’t want to go to the Hacienda. Is he afraid of being alone with her? Boris says of course not. He simply would like to work things out now. Marina says that she is in a hurry. Alcides must be looking for her and she doesn’t want to lose her job. If Boris wants a divorce, he has to come to the Hacienda. Boris agrees. Marina says that he knows how to get in without being seen. She’ll be waiting. She leaves.

Manuela asks how Hugo could make such an accusation. She is a respectable woman. Hugo says that he isn’t going to give the details of her behavior on the train because Soledad is present and she is truly a respectable woman. Soledad tells Hugo that his accusation is very serious. Hugo replies that Soledad knows him very well. She knows that he feels very uncomfortable talking about such things. Dr. Dan says that he believes Hugo. He asks Manuela if she knows how long he suffered because of what she did to him. Hugo says that unfortunately for Manuela, her plans didn’t turn out as she expected. She didn’t count on him being on that train listening to her plans. Dr. Dan tells Manuela that she can go back to where she came from and tell Alcides that his plan failed thanks to Hugo. Manuela laughs, “You know what,” she says, “let me be very clear to you, to this lady (‘esa mujercita’) and to the twin (‘y a ti, gemelito’) that I will never give you a divorce. Never.” Soledad says that she can’t believe that there are people like that. Dr. Dan says to Hugo that he doesn’t know why he did that but he thanks Hugo. Hugo says that life has taught him a very hard lesson: lies, even if told for love, never bring good results. Dr. Dan asks if Hugo spoke to Michelle. Hugo says that Michelle wasn’t home. She has gone to Europe. Dr. Dan says that he understands. She went to heal her wounds. Dr. Dan thanks Hugo again and leaves. Hugo looks at Soledad.

Ester tells Lucas that Antonia has locked herself in her room for hours and won’t come out. Lucas wonders if she is ill. Ester says that she won’t say a word. Lucas says that he will go and talk to her.

Soledad and Hugo-
S: Alcides will have to answer for many things after this. It’s incredible that he would dare bring this woman here.
H: He will deny everything.
S: Thanks for everything. Really, your behavior surprised me a lot. I didn’t think you were capable of doing that.
H: Why? Because I helped the doctor?
S: Yes, I thought that…
H: Let’s make it clear. The doctor remains a strong candidate to win your heart.
S: I admit that your frankness amazed me. Because you were fair (‘hiciste justicia sin mezquindad,’ literally, ‘you acted justly without stinginess’), without caring that this would benefit Daniel. You still did it.
H: I have shown you that what I did because of jealousy or because you married my brother or whatever, my plan of vengeance was stupid and I haven’t stopped regretting it for one second of my life.
S: I’d better get back to work.
H: I need you to clarify a doubt that I’ve had (‘ronda mi cabeza,’ literally, ‘has been turning about in my head’) since I spoke to Alcides.
He flashes back to Alcides asking if Soledad had told Hugo what happened.
H: What happened between you and Alcides when I was gone?

Lucas tries to get Antonia to come out and tell him what is wrong. She says that she just wants to be alone. Antonia flashes back to telling Soledad about her obsession with Soledad’s sin with Hugo. Antonia says that she will only speak to Soledad. She is the only one who can forgive her sins.

Hugo and Soledad-
S: Ok, I’ll tell you what happened between me and Alcides.
H: Did he hurt you?
S: The first thing that I want you to know is that it is very difficult to make this confession…(Hugo starts to say something) Please don’t interrupt me until I finish telling you what happened.
H: It’s clear that I won’t like what you are going to tell me.
S: I went to your house to find you. I didn’t know you had left the city and Alcides was there. Alcides pretended to be you, Hugo. It was all very confusing. He pulled his hair back and I didn’t imagine that he was your brother, Alcides. And … we kissed. I kissed your brother Alcides because I thought he was you.
H: But how, how could this happen? (Hugo’s eyes are full of tears) How, Soledad, how? Alcides will pay for this. He will answer to me. But if Alcides kissed you, thinking it was me…it was because you let him kiss you. Or was it a stolen kiss (‘un beso robado’)? I don’t understand. Why did you come looking for me?
S: It was for something very special.
H: Something very special?
S: Yes.
H: What… very special thing?
S: I was thinking about what you told me.. about us. You told me to find you when I felt prepared to.. and I feel that I am prepared to forgive you, Hugo.

Margot is rehashing her love problems in front of a mirror with the help of flashbacks. She had some good times with Hercu-less but he betrayed her and doesn’t love her anymore. Then there’s Arturo and his ED problem. Margot says that sometimes she is afraid of Arturo and sometimes… She flashes back to kissing him. Margot says that she will take the afternoon to think about what to do.

Lucas continues to try and get Antonia to open the door but she won’t. Ester sends Lucas and Ursula away. Antonia says that she betrayed Ester too. Antonia confesses that she knew about Lucas and Rebeca and didn’t tell Ester.

Hugo and Soledad-
S: I’ve been thinking a lot. You are the father of my child and that will never change. I forgive you, Hugo, and now I ask your forgiveness if it was I who failed you.
H: Soledad, I will spend the rest of my life regretting all the harm I did to you. I will never forgive myself for pretending to be my brother, Alcides.
S: Hugo, those are painful memories for me.
H: Then… does this mean that you are giving us another opportunity?
S: No, we can never be together, Hugo. The only thing that ties us together is the love we have for our daughter, nothing more.
H: This means that you will accept Dr. Dan.
S: The only thing I will accept now is to be tranquil. I’ve gone through so many things – pain and frustrations and if the price that I am going to pay for peace is to be alone, I will do it, Hugo.
H: You will never be alone. I will always support you because I love you. I love you above everything.

Hugo leaves. Dr. Dan comes in. He asks how Soledad feels. She apologizes for doubting him. Dr. Dan says that it doesn’t matter. The only important thing is that she knows the truth and he won’t rest until he gets a divorce. Dr. Dan sees that Soledad is crying and guesses it is because of Hugo. Soledad doesn’t want to talk about it. She decides she doesn’t feel well and decides to go home. (Nobody said anything to Hugo about curing the baby!) Dr. Dan doesn’t have any more patients so he tells the nurse he is leaving. He has something very important to do.

It’s back to memory lane with Antonia and Ester talking about what happened with Rebeca and Lucas. Ester forgives Antonia for happened but Antonia still won’t open the door.

At the forge, Boris tells Hugo that he is a very noble person to help his rival like he did. Not many men would have done that. Hugo says that at least he is at peace. Boris asks if Soledad gave him any hope and Hugo says no, “but when you truly love, hope is the last thing you lose. You hold onto anything. You wait for a miracle.” Boris says, “a miracle,” with irony. Hugo says that he knows Boris perfectly and asks what is the matter. Boris replies that it is Marina. She came to the workshop and asked for money in exchange for giving him a divorce. Boris says that he doesn’t know what to do. As Hugo knows, they don’t have a cent.

Manuela barges into the Hacienda looking for Alcides. Marina says that Alcides isn’t home. Manuela doesn’t believe it. She yells for Alcides and says that he never told her that he had a twin brother and the failure of the plan is his fault and he is going to pay her anyway. Dr. Dan comes in during this and tells Manuela that what Hugo said was true then. Dr. Dan also doesn’t believe that Alcides isn’t home. He shouts that bringing Maneula to San Marino to make him look bad in front of Soledad was just another of Alcides’ dirty tricks but Alcides will never get Soledad. Manuela says that Dr. Dan won’t get Soledad either because she won’t give him a divorce. Dr. Dan says that everyone knows what kind of a woman she is and a judge will give him a divorce without her consent. Dr. Dan yells to the absent Alcides that he can buy Manuela, he can pay to have Dr. Dan killed but he can never buy Soledad’s love. Manuela warns Dr. Dan that Alcides is very a dangerous man.
Dr. Dan says that he isn’t afraid of Alcides.

Hugo takes off one of his rings and gives it to Boris to give to Marina. Hugo says that it is very valuable. Boris says that he can’t take it. It’s a family heirloom. “What good are material things,” says Hugo, “if I can’t help my best friend. Take it.” Hugo points out that Boris gave up his savings to buy the workshop. Hugo tells him that Marina knows that the ring is valuable and she’ll take it in exchange for giving him a divorce.

Soledad comes home from the hospital. She tells Ursula that something happened that had it not been for Hugo, would have turned into a nightmare. She rehashes what happened with Manuela, Dr. Dan and Hugo. Soledad isn’t sure whether to believe that Alcides was responsible for bringing Manuela to San Marino but one thing she is sure of is that Hugo behaved like a prince. He gallantly (‘tuvo gran gallardía) defended Dr. Dan knowing that he wants to marry her. Ursula tells Soledad that Hugo is a good person. Soledad has to forgive him. Soledad is telling Ursula that she did forgive Hugo when Ester comes in and explains about Antonia’s bizarre behavior.

At the Hacienda, Eloisa tells Alcides that he came back to San Marino a changed man with one purpose – Soledad. He can’t resort to violence or he will ruin everything. (Did they cut something here? When did Alcides say that he was going to get violent?) Alcides responds that he is trying. Every day he tries to calm all his accumulated hate (‘apaciguar tanto desamor acumulado,’). He has a lot of hate inside him against his parents, against Hugo and what is worse, he is tormented by memories. Eloisa asks what memories is he talking about. Alcides says the memories he has of what he lived through when he lost his memory. It was a living hell. He tells Eloisa with accompanying flashbacks that for months he lived in a cave as a beggar. He didn’t know who he was. Then Beatriz de Linares, Arturo’s sister, rescued him. She took him to a cabaña in the woods and drugged him, and drugged him and drugged him. Eloisa says that she never knew any of this. Alcides says that later it was one horror after another: ridicule, (vejámenes), torture. Eloisa says that it was a miracle he survived. Alcides says that the scar he showed her before was from when Beatriz tried to kill him. “What happened in the cabaña almost turned me into a man who only wanted vengeance,” says Alcides, “but they didn’t succeed, they didn’t succeed.”

Antonia tells Soledad how much she has suffered for what she did. Soledad asks how Antonia changed from the person who taught her how to knit when she was a little girl to this woman obsessed with sin. Antonia tells Soledad that she was raped. (There is a pattern here. We have various people: Hugo, Soledad, Alcides, Dr. Dan and Antonia who were hurt or betrayed and they all dealt with it in different ways.)

Arturo is at the cabaret. He is unusually cordial to Paquito. Hercules is there as well.

Antonia says that being raped was her fault. She allowed it. She wants to rip the pain out of her heart. Since that day, her life changed. She became obsessed with serving God but she had no love and treated everyone badly. That is why she hurt Soledad and her family. Antonia says that she knows she doesn’t deserve it but she asks Soledad to forgive her. Soledad does so. Soledad says that this will be their secret.

Arturo sits down with Hercu-less. He says that he found out what happened with Margot. Arturo doubts that Margot will forgive Herc. Margot is Arturo’s now. He wants to marry her. Herc says that Margot won’t accept a guy who has an ED problem. They start to fight.

Alcides tells Eloisa that Beatriz kept him in the cabaña for various months obsessing about him remembering something that he did. Eloisa asks what Alcides did that caused Beatriz to hate him so much. Alcides says that Beatriz thought he had raped her. Eloisa is surprised and Alcides says that there are still many things he doesn’t remember about his past. There were too many months of torture: blows, whippings and injections.
(Alcides doesn’t remember raping Beatriz?) Eloisa asks why Alcides didn’t escape. He is a strong man. Alcides says that the drugs weakened his muscles and he could barely walk. Eloisa asks what happened after that. Alcides says that it went on that way until the end. “The end?” says Eloisa? “That’s right. In life, for good or for bad, there is always an end.” Eloisa asks how Alcides escaped from Beatriz. The credits roll.

Tomorrow – Dr. Dan and Alcides fight.

La Traición, Tues. June 24 - The excitement builds: Lucas writes a letter, Manrique tries to rent a piano and Eloisa rips her dress

Aurora heads for the trip wire

Did I do something bad?

Eloisas takes Aurora out of the treasure vault

Alcides wipes off Manuela's kiss

The sign for Lucas' new love-letter writing business

Margot gets up, faces Hugo and asks if he recognizes her. Hugo says that he thought she was Manuela. Arturo is confused and irritated. He tells Hugo to say why he came or leave. Hugo tells Arturo that he doesn’t know how he got out of jail. He will find out later. He tells Arturo that he knows what he is planning. Arturo says that he doesn’t know what Hugo is talking about. Hugo asks why Arturo sent his servant to get Manuela.

At the Hacienda, Alcides tells Manuela that he assumes she knows why she is here and asks Hercu-less to leave them alone. Manuela says that Herc explained everything to her. What she isn’t sure about is the payment for her services. She asks how much Alcides is talking about. Alcides asks if 200 grams of gold sounds good.

In the treasure vault, Eloisa and Aurora are playing with jewels. Eloisa considers taking a tiara but she thinks Alcides might notice if it was gone and kill her. Suddenly Eloisa notices that Aurora is right next to the trip wire for the booby trap. She tells the baby to be still and first nicely and then angrily. (Good luck with that.)

Soledad asks if Dr. Dan is sure of what he told her. He says yes. If Aurora gets a blood transfusion, she could be cured of catalepsy. Dr. Dan now explains that he wants to exchange all of Aurora’s cataleptic blood with some other blood and then she’ll be cured. He says that medically it’s very logical. Soledad says that nothing could make her happier than curing Aurora. Dr. Dan says that he swore to find a cure for her daughter and he will, she’ll see. Soledad thanks him and goes to change.

Eloisa tries to tell a little baby not to do something. She goes and stands where she will be hit by the arrow and Aurora grabs the trigger. The crossbow is triggered – Eloisa gasps.

Ursula is knocking on the door of Soledad’s room and calling her. Ester comes up and asks if she has seen Soledad. Ursula says that she was at the market. When she came back, she found Soledad’s door locked and no one answers her knock. Ester knocks and calls. Ester asks who is taking care of the baby. Ursula doesn’t know. Could someone have taken her again? They go to ask the guards.

Manuela asks if Alcides doesn’t think that her coming from so far away to help him doesn’t merit something more. Alcides asks how much she wants. Manuela says that depends – just the basics will cost half a kilogram of gold, a deluxe job will cost more. Alcides says that if she does the job well, he will pay what she asks. Manuela agrees and ask Alcides what exactly he wants her to do. Alcides asks her to listen carefully. She is going to meet with Dr. Dan in front of Soledad. Manuela says that she already understands that Alcides doesn’t want Dr. Dan to marry Soledad and that will happen if he doesn’t get a divorce. Alcides says that he wants to use her presence in San Marino. He wants Manuela, in front of Soledad, to tell Dr. Dan how much she loves him, how much she misses him, etc. He wants Soledad to feel that it is Dr. Dan’s fault that Manuela is suffering. “That will make Dr. Dan look like a heartless villain,” says Manuela. Alcides agrees. Manuela tells Alcides that that will cost him 3 kilograms of gold.

Soledad tells Dr. Dan that she will donate as much blood as is necessary to cure her daughter. Dr. Dan drops the bombshell that just any old blood won’t work. It has to be the blood of someone who has been cured of catalepsy. Soledad says that would mean Michelle or… Dr. Dan finishes the sentence, “or Hugo de Medina.”

Arturo says that he doesn’t have anything to say to Hugo. This is a private dinner so Hugo should leave. Hugo says that he knows that Arturo is conspiring again with his brother, Alcides. Hugo says that Alcides probably got him out of jail and as a thank you Arturo sent his servant to get Dr. Dan’s wife in Alcala. (Hugo, you’re really not thinking here. Don’t you remember that Arturo accused Alcides of being responsible for Arturo losing his hand? Why would they work together?) “Hercules went to get a woman?” asks Margot. Hugo says that he saw Herc get on the train with a babe and they had a good time on the trip. Margot is upset to hear that Herc was fooling around behind her back and she leaves.

Hercu-less is looking for Marina at the Hacienda. He takes off his shirt and washes. Marina comes into the room behind him and watches lustfully.

Manrique begs Antonia to give him piano lessons. She says that there are serious problems in her family right now and she can’t think about piano lessons. Manrique says that he is a man of quick decisions. He wants to know whether Antonia will give him lessons. She asks if Manrique has a piano. He says no but they could use the one in the tavern. Antonia says that she could never go into the tavern. Again Manrique offers to pay her whatever she wants. They could use the piano in the tavern in the mornings when the cabaret is closed. No one would know. Antonia suggests that Manrique leave. He does.

The guard tells Ester, Antonia and Ursula that Soledad left without the baby but that Eloisa came in. Down in the treasure vault, the arrow missed Eloisa by a hair. She is relieved and irritated at Aurora. She grabs the baby and leaves the vault. (I think Aurora is still clutching an emerald but she isn’t wearing the cute bonnet that she had on).

Alcides says that he will pay Manuela 3 kilograms of gold but she has to get on the job right away. Manuela says that she isn’t finished negotiating. She wants half of the gold up front. Alcides says that she is a good bargainer. He asks what she does for a living. Manuela says that she lives off of men. Alcides says that can be very lucrative. He asks how Dr. Dan fells into her clutches (‘caer en sus redes,’ literally, ‘fell in her nets,’) She replies that she is good actress and gives Alcides a sample performance. Alcides says that he is impressed. Manuela says that she has other abilities as well and strokes Alcides’ leg.

At the hospital, Soledad says to herself that Dr. Dan is very good to her and her daughter but no matter how much she tries to deny it, her heart belongs to Hugo, only Hugo.

Arturo tells Hugo that he is free because he didn’t have anything to do with kidnapping Aurora. Then Arturo finally tells Hugo that Hercu-less betrayed Arturo and has worked for Alcides for months. Hugo turns on his heel and leaves. “Hercu-less brought Dr. Dan’s wife to San Marino,” says Arturo to himself, “Alcides must be up to something for his brother to be so upset.”

Eloisa puts Aurora in her crib and tells her to be quiet. (Aurora has her bonnet on again.) No one must see her leave. She opens the door and Ester and Ursula are standing there. Ester asks where Eloisa was. Why didn’t answer when they knocked a few minutes ago. Ursula asks about the baby and Eloisa says that she is in her crib. Then Ester (the seamstress) notices that Eloisa’s gown is ripped and asks how that happened.

Manuela tells Alcides that men who know her intimately says that she is the best of the best. Alcides pats her hand, “Congratulations, (‘la felicito’)” he says, “but really I’m only interested in your services as a professional imposter.” He gives her some gold as an advance. Herc comes in. Alcides ask him to take Manuela to find Dr. Dan. She knows what to do. Alcides tells Herc that no one must see him. Alcides says that if anyone finds out that Manuela is involved with him, the whole plan will fail. Herc says not to worry no one will see him. Manuela kisses Alcides on the cheek as she leaves and says that she will be back for the rest of her payment. Alcides wipes it off with his scarf and says that Manuela is a professional slut.

Manrique comes to see Paquito and says that in San Marino only he and the Obragons have a piano. He wants to rent the piano in the cabaret.

Eloisa says that she fell while playing with Aurora and tore her dress. Aurora does have a jewel from the treasure vault (choking danger!) Ester asks why Eloisa didn’t respond when she and Ursula knocked. Eloisa replies that she was playing with the baby and didn’t hear. Eloisa takes the offensive and ask why Ester is asking so many questions. Eloisa volunteered to watch the baby when Soledad went to the hospital. She says that Ester’s suspicions offend her. Ester backs down and says that so many strange things have gone on that they are all on edge. Eloisa says that she has to leave to get her dress fixed. Ester offers to do it for her but Eloisa refuses. (She’d have to take it off and all the jewels she stole would fall out.) She leaves. Ursula goes to Aurora.

Manuela comes into the hospital and asks nurse Soledad to see Dr. Dan. Soledad asks for her name and symptoms. Manuela says that she isn’t sick. She is Manuela Marin, Dr. Dan’s wife. Soledad is impactada.

Alcides imagines the look on the ‘little doctor’s’ face when he sees his surprise he sent him. He hopes Maneula does a good job. Hugo comes in.
H: We need to talk.
A: I heard you went to Europe looking for Michelle. What happened? Did you find her?
H: I’m not here to talk about Michelle or my personal life. I’ve come for another reason.
A: Calm down. You always act as if everyday were your last. Sit down. Would you like a brandy?
H: No, thanks. I don’t want anything. I want answers. And you’ll give them to me one by one.
A: Uff. I take it things didn’t go well with Michelle.
H: Michelle wasn’t there.
A: You don’t know how sorry I am. But tell me, to what do I owe the honor of your visit? Or did Soledad tell you?
H: Tell me what? What did Soledad have to tell me?

Manuela asks Soledad again to get Dr. Dan. She says that he is with a patient but she will get him in a minute. “Thank you, nurse,” says Manuela. “I’m not a nurse,” says Soledad primly (in her nurse hat) I’m an assistant to the doctor.” “Nurse, assistant, it’s all the same to me. Please get Dr. Dan,” says Manuela. Dr. Dan comes into the hall and sees Manuela. He is super impactado. Manuela starts her performance right away. “After so many years I have returned.”

Paquito makes excuses about why he can’t rent the piano to Manrique but he insists.

Ursula finds the emerald in Aurora’s hand and wonders where she could have found something so expensive.

Hugo and Alcides-
H: What happened with Soledad?
A: Well if you don’t want a drink, I do. (To himself) How do I explain impersonating Hugo and hugging and kissing Soledad? No, I’ll let Soledad explain it.
H: I’m waiting Alcides. What must Soledad tell me?
A: You have no sense of humor. Tell me why you’re here.
H: Don’t act stupid. I know what you’re up to. I think it’s base.
A: What are you talking about?
H: Manuela Marin de von Chirac.

Manuela says that she got his letter and now she’s found him after so many years of neglect. Soledad says that she will leave them alone. Dr. Dan asks if they have met and introduces Soledad to Manuela as his fiancé. Manuela says that Soledad is one who wants to take her husband.

Margot finds Hercu-less. She slaps him.

Boris goes to see Lucas. Lucas asks if he has good news about his divorce but Boris says that unfortunately he doesn’t. Lucas says that Boris seems to be very much in love with Ursula. Boris says that he is madly in love with Ursula and that is why Lucas should let him see her. Boris says that he knows Lucas’ family has problems with Hugo but… Lucas interrupts and says that his relationship has nothing to do with his boss. Lucas shows Boris his “Love letters written here” sign. Lucas says that is his new job. It is all he knows how to do. He doesn’t know if he will have any clients. Boris says that he will be Lucas’ first client.

Ester and Ursula discuss where Aurora could have picked up the emerald. They consider Eloisa and Alcides. Ester says that it couldn’t be Alcides. He can’t get by the guards.

Hugo and Alcides-
A: Manuela Marin de von Chirac. That’s the name of the ‘little doctor’s’ wife. I saw it on the marriage certificate.
H: Alcides, I just came from Arturo de Linares’ house. He says that Hercu-less works for you.
A: What’s wrong with that?
H: I saw him and that woman on the train from San Marino and not only that, I heard all their plans. At first, I thought it was Arturo’s idea in conjunction with you but no. It’s you who are the one who is responsible for everything. It’s you who are behind everything.
A: Little brother, why don’t you calm down. You’re getting upset. What is the problem? He’s your enemy as much as mine.
H: Alcides, I don’t play dirty (‘yo no peleo dando golpes bajos,’ literally, ‘I don’t fight with low blows’) My fight for Soledad is clean and transparent.
A: However, Dr. Dan isn’t playing fair (‘limpio,’ literally, ‘clean’). No sir. He fooled Soledad, our beloved. He shouldn’t have done that. Don’t you think he should be punished?
H: Who do you think you are? God?
A: No but I have more money than Him.
H: Ayy, brother. At times I pity you. We are so different.
A: You’re wrong. We are exactly the same. The difference is that you have always had everything you wanted but I haven’t. I had to work hard. I had to work for what I have with a little scam (‘trampita,’ literally, ‘a little trap’) here and there.
H: Like now. No brother. I don’t play by those rules. I’m going to tell Soledad the truth right now.
Alcides puts out his arm to keep Hugo from leaving.

Manuela says that Dr. Dan abandoned her and never responded to her letters. Dr. Dan stands there open mouthed. Soledad says that is not what Dr. Dan told her. Manuela says that when she got Dr. Dan’s letter it broke her heart because she thought that she was the love of his life. Dr. Dan asks why Manuela is telling these lies. She knows perfectly well that he found her in bed with his best friend. Manuela says that isn’t true. Dr. Dan says that it is true and he wrote to her a thousand times asking for a divorce but she never responded. He asks her to divorce him because his heart only belongs to Soledad. “Don’t you care about my feelings?” says Manuela. Soledad excuses herself and Dr. Dan says that he and Manuela have a lot to talk about.

Hercu-less asks why Margot slapped him. Has she gone crazy? Margot says that she knows he was on a train with a slut named Manuela. He asks what she is talking about. Margot says that someone saw him. Herc says that they are lying. Margot says that Hugo saw him making love with Manuela on the train. She slaps Herc again. Margot says that he is just like all the other men. Herc says that he can explain but Margot says that she doesn’t want to hear it. She’s leaving him. After she’s gone, Herc curses his bad luck to have been on the same train as Hugo.

Hugo and Alcides-
H: Are you going to kill me?
A: Listen to me, Hugo. Listen to me. Brother, that attitude is going to push Soledad into the little doctor’s arms.
H: I heard everything. I heard everything. I heard her say that she is here to wreck Dr. Dan’s life.
A: What do you want? That he ruin our lives? Is that what you want? I’m sorry brother but I can’t let you leave this house and tell Soledad all these stupid things. I forbid it.
H: You can't forbid me to do anything. (Hugo drops his walking stick.)
A: We’ll see. I’m better trained than you now. I don’t want to hurt you.
H: What are you going to do? Bury me alive again?

Boris takes his letter and thanks Lucas. He says that he couldn’t have found the words without his help. Lucas has a real talent. Boris asks Lucas not to reveal that he wrote the letter. Lucas says that he won’t.

Ester knocks on Antonia’s door but she says that she is busy and won’t let Ester in. Ester says that she wants to know if Antonia has lost an emerald. Antonia says that she doesn’t have any emeralds and to leave her alone. Ester wonders what is going on with her.

Hugo and Alcides have an awkward confrontation because they are both played by the same actor.
H: The only thing that has changed about you is that you have a lot of money. But you continue to be as selfish (‘egoísta’) as ever.
A: Leave my house. Leave my house and do what you want. Run to Soledad and tell her what you want. Tell her and I’ll deny it all.
H: It will be your word against mine. As always.
Hugo leaves. Alcides says that he can’t believe fate put Hugo on the same train as Dr. Dan’s wife.

Arturo finds Margot and tells her that he thought she might like some company after what happened. Margot says that she didn’t know he cared about her problems. They kiss. Margot says that Herc betrayed her but she won’t pay him back the same way. They kiss again.

Dr. Dan asks what Manuela is doing in San Marino. Why has she suddenly turned up when he found the love of his life? Who sent her here?

Eloisa comes to the Hacienda to see Alcides. Marina says that he isn’t home. Marina refuses to bring her something to drink. Marina says that Alcides left her a letter. She goes to get it. Eloisa tells herself that Alcides will be glad when he finds out what she told Soledad to make him seem like an angel.

Hugo finds Soledad at the hospital. She says, “Hugo,” like she’s found her long lost love and he says, “Soledad,” like he’s reading the phone book.

Margot stops kissing Arturo. She says that it isn’t right. Arturo says that he thought she cared for him. Margot tells him that she should leave. Arturo says that Margot is always welcome in his house. If she ever wants to see him, she should do so.

Marina is insolent when she gives Eloisa the letter. The letter explains about Manuela and how Hugo found out about it. He wants Eloisa to do damage control with Soledad. He also wants her to go into the treasure vault and get four gold bars.

Manuela starts to tells Dr. Dan that after he left terrible things happened but he says that he doesn’t believe a word. He tells Manuela that Soledad is the only woman that he loves now. He says that Manuela is going to go out right now and tell Soledad that there is nothing between them and that it was Manuela’s fault that Dr. Dan left her. Manuela says that she won’t do it. Dr. Dan tells her not to make him do something that he doesn’t want to do. She tells him not to threaten her. Dr. Dan tells her that Soledad is his future and he isn’t going to let Manuela ruin that.

Hugo and Soledad-
H: I know that I promised not to come looking for you but I just got back from a trip.
S: Ursula told me that you went to find Michelle. I don’t understand why you came back so soon. What happened with Michelle?
H: Michelle wasn’t in her house. I spoke to Andres.
S: Where is Michelle?
H: She went to Europe. It seems that she doesn’t want anything to do with me.
S: I see. Why is it that we hurt the people who love us, Hugo? It is as if our being together makes bad things happens to those around us.
H: That’s not correct. Michelle left because she is an intelligent woman and she understands the thing that we don’t want to understand.
S: What do you mean?
H: That our lives are linked forever. That we love each other. That our love is stronger than our wish to be apart.
S: Have you spoken with your brother, Alcides? Did he tell you what happened?
The credits roll.

La Traición, Mon., June 23 - The final week starts out slow! Hugo eavesdrops, Margot bakes a cake, Manrique wants piano lessons and Lucas gets a trim

Margót has made a cake for Arturo

Eloisa hasn't childproofed the treasure vault

¡Tan preciosa!

Hercu-less tells Manuela how attractive she is but she says that she isn’t interested in servants. She wants the bosses with the money. Hugo appears to be listening to their conversation. Herc says that he doesn’t have money but he has other virtues and starts to unbutton his shirt saying that it’s hot… Hugo wonders who the woman with Herc is and what they were doing in Alcala? Hugo thinks Herc might be on an errand for Arturo. Manuela takes off her extremely modern looking shoes and starts to play footsie with Herc.

Soledad asks why Antonia took her baby. She remembers that Antonia was very hard on her but why did she take the baby? Antonia says that the baby was a product of sin since Soledad wasn’t married to Hugo. That is why she had Dr. Max take the baby to a convent. Antonia flashes back to making her agreement with Dr. Max. Soledad says that they thought Arturo had taken the baby when Hugo rescued her. Antonia tells her that Arturo took the baby from Dr. Max. Soledad is horrified. Aurora could have been killed. Antonia says that she is really sorry. When she came to the Obragon house, she was obsessed with having everyone live under God’s law. That is why Antonia wanted to punish Soledad such as when she set the baby’s clothes on fire. Flashback to that incident. Soledad says it was an accident but Antonia says that she did it on purpose and almost ended up killing Soledad.

Eloisa asks why Alcides needed to speak to her so urgently. Alcides asks Eloisa if she remembers what he told her when he came back to San Marino. Eloisa says how could she forget it – Alcides would give her half his fortune when Soledad was his (‘cayera en tus brazos,’ literally, ‘will fall into your arms,’). Alcides says that now seems to be the perfect moment to reach that goal. Eloisa flashes back to seeing the treasure. “Half your fortune,” says Eloisa dreamily. Alcides says that it is enough to live like a queen for three lives. Eloisa says that she will convince Soledad that Alcides is the best man in the world. Alcides says he doesn’t want only that. He wants Soledad to think that he is right man for her. He tells Eloisa that he has just sent Soledad flowers and he needs to sacrifice a pawn (‘peon’). “That’s me,” says Eloisa, “Don’t worry, I will defend the King in front of the Queen and it will be checkmate (‘defenderé al rey frente a la reina, y le daré jaque mate’).” She leaves. “Con tiempo y un ganchito, Soledad,” says Alcides, “each time, I’m getting closer to you.” (You didn’t hear Soledad tell you that she loves Hugo and has forgiven him?)

The judge tells Margot that it was a dirty trick to steal his boots to get Arturo released from prison. He says what she did is immoral and reminds her that he is the highest authority in San Marino. Margot says to herself that she hopes she doesn’t get arrested. She starts to apologize when Arturo comes in. Arturo says that it was he who asked Margot to demonstrate his innocence. It was nothing personal. He was lucky that Margot found him – who better than a judge to impart justice. Arturo says that he hopes the judge has no objection. The judge grudgingly says that he has no objection and leaves. Margot hugs Arturo. He tells her that she is his savior and he is eternally grateful to her.

Soledad asks how Antonia could have done what she did to her and her baby. She never imagined that Antonia hated them that much. Antonia says that she didn’t hate Soledad; she just thought she was taking the wrong path. However after she saw Soledad suffer with Hugo’s vengeance and her baby’s illness. When she saw Soledad make so many sacrifices for love with such nobility, she realized that she was mistaken. Antonia says that she doesn’t expect Soledad to forgive her; she knows God will punish her. She wants Soledad to know that she is doing something terrible to pay for her sins and help support the household. Eloisa breezes in and seeing Soledad and Antonia says that she might have arrived at a bad time.

Arturo says that he is a free man thanks to Margot. She is happy. Arturo notices that she isn’t watching the window. Where is Hercu-less? Margot says that he has gone on a trip. Arturo wonders what Alcides is up to. Margot tells him not to worry about it but to go home and get some rest. Arturo asks if Margot would like to come with him. Margot says that she has to wait for Herc. Arturo says that he will never forget what she did for him.

Hercu-less is putting the moves on Manuela. She asks if he is married. He says he is married to someone who loves him very much. Manuela says that Herc does not seem to love his wife that much. Herc asks what love has to do with it. Any man would go after a woman like her. Hugo says to himself that the woman is a featherbrained (‘ligera de cascos,’ literally, ‘light of brains,’). Herc asks Manuela if she knows what to do when they get to San Marino. Manuela says that she has to go his boss’s house and see if he has the money that he promised her. Hugo wonders who they are talking about. Why did Arturo send for this woman? Manuela continues that after that they will go to Dr. Dan’s and ruin his plans for Soledad.

Eloisa apologizes for coming at a bad moment. Soledad says that she and Antonia were discussing a family matter. Eloisa says that she will return later. Eloisa flashes back to unmasking Antonia at the cabaret. She winks at Antonia. She tells Soledad that on second thought, she will wait in Soledad’s room because what she has to say is very important. Eloisa admires the flowers and ask if they are from Soledad’s suitors. She leaves. Antonia says that she can’t carry her guilt any more.

Dr. Dan is healing the sick and a nurse comes in and tells him someone is bleeding to death.

Back on the train, Herc says that Manuela understands the plan well. She says that she hopes Herc’s boss has the money because she doesn’t feel like seeing her ex-husband again. Herc reminds her that Dr. Dan is her husband. They aren’t divorced. Overhearing, Hugo is confused. He wonders why Arturo would bring Dr. Dan’s wife to San Marino. He flashes back to Alcides telling him that Dr. Dan was married. Hugo figures out that Alcides found the wife and is bringing her to San Marino. He can’t understand why Arturo’s servant is doing the job. Are Arturo and Alcides allies? Manuela and Herc go off to a private carriage for some nookie. Hugo concludes that this woman is part of a plan by his brother and Arturo to get Dr. Dan out of the way.

Ester is cutting Lucas’ hair (I guess they can’t afford a barber). Lucas says that Antonia is acting very strangely and talking about sin. Lucas wonders if she getting enough sleep. He doesn’t like the idea of these nighttime piano lessons. Ester says that Antonia is making good money and their lifestyle has improved. Lucas says that he will put a sign out tomorrow that says, “We write love letters.” (There’s a lot of foot traffic outside the Obragon house.) Ester says that she kept his love letters. They were wonderful. Ester says that she is sure he will have lots of orders.

Paquito is paying his staff. He pays Pierre and Esmeralda. Paquito asks Esmeralda if she wants to know a secret. He puts her in his lap and says that he is not as effeminate as everyone things. Sometimes he wants to love a woman. If she is interested, he will pay her extra. She seems to be interested.

In Soledad’s room, Eloisa asks if Antonia is ok. Soledad says that it is a family matter. She asks what Eloisa wants to tell her. Eloisa says that it is about Alcides. Soledad is concerned that something happened after Soledad left Alcides at Eloisa’s house the previous evening. Eloisa says nothing happened but that Alcides was so upset by what happened that he started crying. He regretted how he had behaved in the past and hadn’ know how to win Soledad the way she deserved. Soledad says that it is too late. All she feels for him is disgust. Eloisa says to herself that this is going to more difficult than she thought (‘esto va a ser más difícil que matar un elefante a pellizcos,’ literally, ‘this is going to be more difficult than killing an elephant with pinches,’). Eloisa tells Soledad that at least her feelings are clear. Soledad says that on the contrary she doesn’t know what she feels in her heart. Eloisa mentions the two bouquets of flowers. Alcides told her he was sending one, she asks Soledad who sent the other, Hugo? Soledad says that the other bouquet is from Dr. Dan. Eloisa ask Soledad to tell her frankly what she feels for Dr. Dan.

Dr. Dan tells the other doctor at the hospital that their patient needs a blood transfusion. The other doctor says that he has never done a transfusion. Dr. Dan says that he learned a special technique. He goes to get his equipment. (This has to mean something. Is this how Dr. Dan is going to save Aurora – a blood transfusion from Hugo?)

Margot runs into Gladis and her maid in the street. Gladis is her usual nasty self. Arturo comes up and tells his mother not to call Margot names. Thanks to Margot, Arturo is free. He asks her into the house. Gladis says that Arturo can associate with whomever he wants in the street but he can’t bring this woman with a bad reputation into her house. Arturo warns Gladis that if she doesn’t stop talking about reputation and the nobility, he warns her that his is capable of marrying Margot.

Paquito finishes his business and pleasure with Esmeralda. Manrique shows up. He wants to realize a childhood dream and take piano lessons with ‘George Wilde’ and needs his address.

In response to Eloisa’s question about what she feels for Dr. Dan, Soledad says that he is intelligent, well educated and generous but he lied to her. He wasn’t capable of telling her the truth about his marital situation. Eloisa says that was a terrible thing. She goes back to her pitch. She says that Alcides was really upset. What if he has changed? Soledad replies that Alcides tried to kill his brother. After trying to do something like that, could a person really change? Eloisa says that Alcides was gone for a long time. He lost his memory and went through a lot. Sometimes people change after such experiences. Soledad isn’t sure. Eloisa continues with her pitch by saying that she understands why Soledad doesn’t trust Alcides. Eloisa says that she wants to tell Soledad that the man she saw last night was totally destroyed and vulnerable. Soledad says that maybe Alcides has changed but for good or bad, Hugo has stolen her heart. Eloisa struggles to conceal her exasperation.

Hercu-less and Manuela return from their train tryst. They will go to Herc’s boss’ house. Manuela says not to say a word about what happened. The train arrives in San Marino. Hugo says that Alcides will have to explain this low blow against Dr. Dan. He says that in love you don’t win with traps and lies.

Dr. Dan does the transfusion with blood that is amazingly bright red and thick like ketchup. The procedure is a success. Who was donor? The nurse says that the hospital is very proud of him. Dr. Dan wishes Soledad thought so.

Soledad repeats to Eloisa that her heart belongs to Hugo. She can’t help it. Soledad needs to go out but Ursula isn’t there. Eloisa volunteers to take care of the baby. (Bad idea) Soledad agrees.

Ursula has gone to see Boris who is taking out his frustration on some piece of metal. Ursula asks if Boris saw Marina. Will she give him a divorce? Boris has been crying.

Gladis says that if Arturo marries Margot, he will never set foot in her house again. He will lose his inheritance and his mother. Gladis leaves. Margot asks what Arturo is doing. He will give his mother a heart attack. Margot laughs at the idea of she and Arturo being married. Arturo says that he said what he did to get his mother off his back. He asks what Margot is carrying. It’s a cake she made with her own hands. Arturo says that the cake will be the perfect dessert to the dinner he has planned for her. Margot will be the guest of honor.

Paquito gives Manrique a bunch of excuses about why he can’t provide ‘George Wilde’s’ address. Manrique says that means he will have to go to Plan B – he holds out the ad Antonia put in the paper about piano lessons. Manrique didn’t want to go there because the Obragons hate him.

Eloisa, holding the baby, locks the door of Soledad’s room. She says if she wants to steal some of the treasure, she is going to have to take Aurora with her. She opens the door to the treasure vault.

Dr. Dan explains to the patient’s wife how he saved her husband with a blood transfusion. Then the lightbulb goes on for Dr. Dan. He can save Aurora with a blood transfusion! Why didn’t he think of that before? (Because you haven’t been thinking with your brain lately, Dr.Dan). Soledad arrives at the hospital to work. Dr. Dan says that he has great news that has to do with the health of her daughter.

Eloisa and Aurora are in treasure vault. Eloisa puts Aurora down on the floor and starts stuffing jewels into her garters and cleavage. Aurora is playing with a pile of diamonds or something right next to the trip wire for the booby trap.

Boris tells Ursula that he talked to Marina and she won’t give him a divorce. Ursula asks if Boris is telling the truth or does he still love Marina. Boris assures Ursula that he and Marina are finished. He loves Ursula. Ursula asks what they are going to do in the meantime. The Obragons won’t let them see each other until Boris is divorced. Should they meet in secret? Boris says no. He will get divorced somehow. Ursula leaves.

Hercu-less brings Manuela to see Alcides. She introduces herself and asks who he is or should she call him ‘Master,’ (‘Patron’) too? Alcides says that a lady like herself shouldn’t call any man ‘master.’ He introduces himself to Manuela. He says that he hopes this is the beginning of a long and rich friendship (‘una larga y fructífera amistad’). He says that he loves to discuss business with a woman as beautiful as her.

Soledad asks Dr. Dan not to keep her in suspense. Dr. Dan says that it is very risky but he is almost sure that if he gives the baby a blood transfusion, that will cure her catalepsy.

Antonia is roaming around filled with guilt. She says that she should have told Soledad the whole truth. She had to purge the wickedness from her heart. The only thing her family must never find out is that she plays the piano in a cabaret disguised as a man. Manrique appears. Antonia asks what he is doing at this house after all the damage he has done. Manrique says that he isn’t there on a social visit. He has come on business. Seeing the maestro play in the cabaret awakened some youthful dreams he thought he had forgotten. He says that he understands that Antonia gives piano lessons. He would like to be her student. He will pay whatever she asks.

Arturo offers a toast to Margot’s kindness and tremendous courage. Thanks to her, he is a free man. He starts to give Margot instructions on drinking wine. In barges Hugo saying that he just saw this lady with Hercu-less on the train. He asks what kind of a man could commit such a base and evil act. Hugo calls Arturo a miserable coward. Arturo asks what Hugo is talking about. Hugo says that he knows that the woman Arturo is with is Dr. Dan’s wife. (Why didn’t you follow Herc and Manuela, Hugo?) Arturo and Margot look very confused. The credits roll.

Tomorrow: Aurora goes for the trip wire in the treasure vault.
