Welcome to Caray, Caray!

Caray, Caray! is a community where telenovelas (TNs) from Spanish-language networks that air in the United States are discussed. Different patios form to discuss TNs presented by larger networks such as Univisión, Telemundo, and Unimás. Participants gather to share their thoughts and insights about characters, plots and subplots. They praise, critique, and snark about what they like or don’t like; and they present ideas about what may or may not happen…but this is based on pure speculation, not spoilers.

TNs are usually covered via daily recaps or discussion pages posted bi-weekly. On discussion pages posted for more than one novela (e.g., Telemundo y Más and Daytime TNs), commenters are urged to precede their comment with the title or part of the title of the TN they are commenting about; it makes it easier for others to identify the TN they are interested in.

A Bit of History

For Caray, Caray! it ALL started with AMOR REAL and Juan Alvarez (the earlier).

Jane Peppler, founder of Caray, Caray! was a mentor in a program sponsored by the school system where she lives. So it was her pleasure to hang out with a 9-year-old Latina whose family came here from Toluca, Mexico when she was a baby. The little girl speaks perfect English, but her parents didn't, so Univision played all the time at their house and Amor Real was her favorite show. That’s how Jane got hooked.

Amor Real is set in 19th century Mexico. It's the first telenovela with hoopskirts (and almost without cleavage)! Amid the usual plots of betrayal, revenge, etc. there is a historical subplot about Juan Alvarez. Although Jane’s young mentee was too young to care much about history, she and Jane looked up Juan Alvarez. He was quite a character.

Watching Univision, one is quickly made aware that the struggle against criolismo in Mexico is by no means over. Manuel Fuentes Guerra, the millionaire bastard, half-Indian (mestizo) hero of Amor Real, is the FIRST non-white Jane EVER saw in any Univision show, who was not a servant, an ignorant and superstitious peasant, or the butt of a joke.

When Jane got hooked, she really got hooked. Next came Alborada, in which she started offering translations into English of each episode all by herself on her website “Pratie Place”. By the end of that telenovela, though, she had collected others who pitched in to recap the episodes. She then started Caray, Caray! to cover only telenovelas and most of her little following, followed her over to her new blog. Their first offering on Caray, Caray! was in April, 2006 for Barrera de Amor.

Below is Jane’s final entry on Pratie Place for telenovela translations. You can view it and the Alborada recaps here: http://pratie.blogspot.com/ (Scroll about halfway down on the right side with the image of Modesta…right above the elephant.)

“FRIENDS: the current plan is to migrate the telenovela adventure to its own blog, starting with Jean's recap of the Cristina show appearances of the Alborada cast. We are going to pick up with Barrera de Amor, the new 9:00 novela, midstream. I have already posted the synopsis and the cast of characters, with commentary and pictures. There will be one more recap here, of the Friday finale [of Amor Real], and then - we're off!”

And boy, did it take off!!

In December, 2018, Jane decided to say good-bye to Caray, Caray! and parted ways; so a team of current recappers, led by Anita, Kirby, and RgvChick, united to “save the blog.” And here we still are…

Community Rules

1.  Be respectful of others: Everyone has a right to voice their thoughts and opinions, so be considerate and accepting of other member’s views, especially if they oppose your own—agree to disagree. Recappers volunteer and dedicate much time to providing recaps; a short, simple thank you and/or a brief comment is sufficient to let them know that you are out there (shuffle your feet so-to-speak)…but comments can be as long as you wish. Support all bloggers; don’t scold or denigrate them. Be reminded that actors are only portraying a character as per the director’s orders; so mock the character, not the actor. To quote a former member: “We love to mock here; don’t mistake it for real hate.” (Chris Ferro)

2.  No spoilers: Discussion of previews, trailers, or any other plot information not found in a current or past episode of the current production is prohibited.  Spoilers WILL be removed by the admin.  This includes references to earlier productions of the story, and even the original novel.  (Note: If you don't like running into spoilers any more than we like seeing them posted on this site, avoid Wikipedia and IMDB pages.)

3.  Keep politics, religion, and celebrity gossip at home. Politics or religion to the extent of proselytizing is not allowed. These may be mentioned in context of the artistic vision and/or history of Mexican culture.
Comments that don’t follow these rules will be deleted by the recapper or an administrator.

Interested in Recapping?

Individuals recap for a variety of reasons—some do it to enhance their writing skills; others do it to assist those who are limited in the Spanish language in enjoying the shows; still others do it just for the fun of it and as a service to the Caray community. Keep in mind that recapping is on a purely voluntary basis. It is common for recappers to spend three hours on a recap; some take longer. Recaps may consist of bullet points, highlights, short summaries, or detailed summaries—every recapper has their own style. If you are interested in recapping, contact us at rgvchick627[at]gmail[dot]com – if we have more people, we can cover more telenovelas.

Great introduction, Rgv Chick!

This is just terrific, Rgv Chick! I was one of the Pratie Place early adopters and followed Jane to the new site. It's been years and years of feeling close to fellow lovers of telenovelas, even having never met them face to face.

I'm grateful to you, Kirby, and Anita for taking over the administration and keeping my playroom going.

JULIEEE!! So nice to hear from you! Thanks!

novelera, I did not know that you were one of the Pratie Place early adopters. What a privilege to still have you here! Thank you for your loyalty and dedication...and the same goes for all the others who have faithfully supported Caray, Caray throughout the years! I just found you all a couple of years ago; and I must say that I am honored to have been welcomed into this friendly and AWESOME community.

This was utterly fantastic Rgv Chick!

What a lovely tapestry you wove! I've been with Caray, Caray for 11 years and did not know the full history of how and why Jane started it all which you narrated beautifully.

Caray is implanted in my mind and heart. It's been a refuge, a safe haven where we can share, rejoice, empathize and commiserate. There are few places as important, as relevant and as valued in my life.

The recappers and commenters have been and are a joy.

Julie, I wish we "saw" you more often.

Novelera, I also did not know you were with Pratie Place. I wish we'd watched more of the same novelas.

Rgv Chick, you, Anita and our beyond talented photographer Kirby have my utmost respect. And gratitude. Thanks to all of you for keeping this "alive". I am deeply grateful.

Diana

Thank you, Diana! I always look forward to reading your comments. There are so many talented writers here and you are one of the best. The "team" had input in developing this page; so I cannot take full credit...it's a tapestry of cooperation, dedication and love of the Caray community.

Fabulous Rgv Chick. I knew some of the earliest beginnings but not all those details so it was delightful to read. And JULIE! yesss..great to see you. You were recapping La Fea Mas Bella when I first started timidly writing a comment or two. And you taught me how to "cut and paste" so you are my hero.

I know Susanlynn went back to those early days as well, I think. Ah what an era! So glad that you,Kirby and Anita are keeping it going. Blessings and have a great day.

Thank you, RgvChick, for the wonderful introduction. I knew nothing about the early days of Pratie Place or Caray. A big thanks to you Anita and Kirby for keeping the blog up and operational.

Julie! Nice to “see” you again!

Chickie, what a lovely idea to post the history of caray caray.

I have been here since the beginning.. Right after my mother died 11 years ago, I was blue and looking for some escape. Then, one day , I was channel surfing. I saw this handsome guy with shoulder length dark hair , carrying a sword, and dressed in period costume. I watched intrigued, but I had no idea what the actors were saying. I googled "Alborada" and found Melinama's (Jane's ) Pratie Place site. She was singlehandedly translating Alborada ,and people were commenting. I had surfed into the show and missed the beginning, so my sweet hub found dvds of the show for me online . It was a good distraction from the loss of my mother , and I was hooked. Next, I watched "Amor Real" on Melinama's recommendation. The telenovelas and caraycaray have been a constant in my life these past 11 years and continue to distract me from sad, bad events in my life. I have "met" so many lovely, caring, wise, clever, witty people here. Julie...Hi...I miss you.

I hopeo your chickie-ens and goats are not going hungry or lonesome as you slave away here on Caray. You are a gold mine which unceremoniously blew in on a South Texas wind. Thank You.

There you are , Kirby . I miss your beautiful photos.

Thank you, JudyB, Susanlynn, Jarifa and Kirby. As we move forward, we wanted everyone to know how Caray started. It's such a treat to hear all the stories of how everyone got started on Caray...and the dedication and loyalty of so many is remarkable.

Kirby, my goats and chickens are doing just fine and getting fed on schedule :-) I missed the eagles, too!

Hi Gang:
The Google + thing going away made my big photo avatars go away. If you do an avatar as your regular blogger one it is smaller than a postage stamp any way you look at it, so that ended my photograph publishing on Caray. As a matter of fact, without a convenient way to share them, I do not have as much interest in photographing the birds and all as before. Now, if you click on an avatar, then click "view full size", the page blows up full screen, with a postage stamp picture in the center of a huge black screen.

I guess I could publish them on a web site and post a link but it still wouldn't be the same.

kj

Thanks for the info, Kirby.

Well, please know ,Kirby, that your photos were something I always looked forward to seeing went I came to the patio each day. ..an excellent addition to an already wonderful place. Thanks for giving us something lovely to look at. You know my favorites were those beautiful, dreamy photos of the moon.

I have been here since the beginning. I began watching telenovelas when hubby and I lived in South America. One of the first telenovelas I watched was in Colombia, based on the 1887 novel "El Caballero de Rauzán", written by Felipe Pérez. His novel was also the basis for the updated, Colombian version "La Traición".

Like others, I came across 'Caray, Caray' when I started surfing the Internet for articles about 'Alborada'. From Day 1, I was hooked. And thank goodness!! Thereafter, somehow I found my way to 'Amor Real', Pasión, and the rest is history…. I believe I've watched 'Amor Real' close to at least a dozen times, followed by 'Pasión' and 'Alborada'.

Even when I'm re-watching a novela, I read the corresponding recaps and comments! It's so much fun to read comments again, and what a kick I get out of it. Also, one can't help but come across various 'Caray', commentators who have stopped posting, and wonder how they are doing.

Somebody asked the other day what was the maximum number of comments for a novela that was recapped here on 'Caray’. I'm re-watching ‘Mañana es Para Siempre’ and actually came across one episode that had over 200 comments! I believe that the comments for ‘Lo que la Vida me Robo’ garnered over 200.

I too was unaware of the reasons why Jane started 'Caray, Caray' and found its history, as explained above by Rgv Chick, fascinating. For many years, Jane gave so much of her time and energy to entertain us all, it's sad to see her go.

During difficult times over a couple of years, I stayed glued to telenovelas (thank you YouTube) and 'Caray, Caray'. My sanity was saved by encountering the wonderful world of all things telenovela ! For real !!

Reading the daily recaps has become a part of my normal day. My USA friends think I'm crazy being addicted to telenovelas and ‘Caray’. But my life would not be the same without my daily novela fix. Sometimes it feels as if I know all the recappers and commentator as friends.

I wish to thank everyone for making my day more enjoyable. I'm sure Anita, Kirby, and RgvChick will carry on and do a fantastic job !!

Again, thanks for saving 'Caray'.

I want to add my thanks for all the recappers and commenters that make Caray Caray so special. It is hard to explain for the un-hooked how much this community of novel a lovers can mean to a person Equally as hard is explaining why I love novelas. I am a faithful lurker. Caray Caray is my go to reading last thing at night.
Mely

Victoria, it's amazing to see how many have been here since the inception of Caray, Caray! but I can certainly see why. The camaraderie and support that is so obvious here is extraordinary...and not just in terms of telenovelas, but also in personal matters. I think JudyB coined a perfect term when she came up with the "virtual family" because that is what we have here at Caray.

Mely. I'm so glad you "came out" and let us meet you. "It is hard to explain for the un-hooked how much this community of novela lovers can mean to a person" ITA! This community has become a vital part of my life and I am so glad I found it.

Big thanks to Caray Caray and all recapers. Especially for LQLVMR and Amar a muerte.

It’s our pleasure, Anon10:33. Thanks for stopping by.

Thank you all for time and effort. I am big fan of the Mexican telenovelas and big fan of the Caray Caray.

Anon 4/10/2019 at 1:14PM, my apologies for the delay in response. Thank you for your support; you are not alone as a fan of telenovelas :-)

This blog is a wonderful resource for everyone, and it is unique in its content! Would you know where to post a question for the readers of the blog? My elderly mother is hoping to remember the name of an older novela in which a lady hears a violinist and she is so enchanted by the music that she follows the sounds to find the violinist. The novela probably aired before 2006. Mom has the recording somewhere on very old VHS tapes, but they may not work after so many years. Would you know where we could post this question so we could at least learn the name of the novela?

To 5student--
I published your query here, though this is probably not the thread that gets many hits now. If I weren't leaving on a trip early tomorrow morning, I'd share it with the other front page headliners. You can do it yourself in each comment section. Be sure to start out by typing OT (off topic). You might mention that "Anita" said it was ok to post.

By doing that you will get more "eyes" to see your post and someone might have a reply.

Sorry I can't help you out. My telenovela watching didn't start until 2008, and I don't remember one that sounds like this.

Good luck in finding an answer to your quest. I've been watching novelas for about a decade but don't remember the one you described. If I see an answer posted, I'll definitely try to watch it, as it sounds interesting.
If you knew one main event, actor, song, director, it would be be easier to search.

Hi Everyone! I wasnt sure where to leave this comment but as I've been a faithful Lurker here for several years I wanted to be brave and take a minute to express my thanks to Jane and all the Recappers for their hard work, time and knowledge. You cant imagine how many Lunch hours, Breaks, and airport Waiting areas we've spent together! and Commenters, I've laughed, talked and snarked with you so many times I feel I actually know you! And thanks to you all I've been able to enjoy many of the Classics that you've recommended in your Comments. Pasions was amazing, FELS meh, Soy tu Duena, lucky lucky Lucero, and i'm now working my way thru Destilando. Thanks to you I can read them like books and fill in the blanks left by the DVDs. Muy Muy Gracias!
SaraAnne

SaraAnne,

Though you say you have been with us for quite some time as a lurker, I will still welcome you to the site and thank you for “stepping out”. I found this site about 3 years ago and started as a lurker, then gradually started contributing comments as “Anonymous” until I finally identified myself. Of course I use an avatar name, but everyone still welcomed me with warm and supportive arms, I quickly became part of this amazing family and now they can’t shut me up LOL.

I am glad that you find the site resourceful; it is inconceivable to me how many TNs have been covered and recapped so thoroughly; your comment that they are like reading a book is spot on. We have some amazingly talented recappers who I sometimes wonder if they are professional writers...they are that good!

Your comment is very appreciated; hope to hear more from you.

Have a wonderful day and a very happy new year!

Thank you Rgv Chick for your comments. I confess I love this Website! I started while watching Teresa in 2011 and it opened a new world. Im so glad to have found Caray - I will never leave now! LOL
Just an aside, I was so in hope that somewhere in the list of Novelas for 2020 one would include a story with Fernando Colunga -- he is just TBLMTW!
SaraAnne

SaraAnne
You and all of us ladies on the forum have wished for FC to return to the TV screen. Alas, we wait in vain; 2020 will probably be no different. He's now 53 and most producers won't consider him for a galan role. For some reason they tried that one last time in Porque El Corazon Manda and the Anti-Galan in Pasion y Poder. Each left us rather disappointed.

Not only that, the telenovelas WE were drawn to featuring Fernando were where he was heroic and larger than life. Those stories don't exist any more. Now we get conflicted guys who have their darker side--see El Dragon, for instance.

But, even without Fernando the Magnificent, we still gather around to watch and share, laugh and cry and snark and laud. Glad you will be with us for the long run.

Welcome.

Anita,

Did you see the news that Fernando Colunga just signed a deal with Telemundo? The say he is going to be the protagonist on a production, still not disclosed. I hope it's a good one. I didn't see any of work in its hay day. Any recommendations?

And welcome SaraAnne. We look forward to having you around here!!

Esther

SaraAnne and Anita, and other FC fans

Beware O/T

There is a Fernando Colunga fanatic uploader on YouTube, Mary Mardorre, who uploads something new everyday about FC, either a photo (past or recent—beautiful ones), an interview, a news article, etc. I subscribe to her channel just to see his wonderful smile each morning.

Yesterday, she uploaded the following news: You can also search YouTube and find additional info .

https://youtu.be/AT7NOUjtAlQ

He's moving to Telemundo!

I'm sorry I don't know how to properly insert a link.

I remember Stevey [observer of all things telenovela (per Anita!!) writing in his post 'Stevey Weighs In, Part 1 year before last that Fernando had a big shouting match with Rosy Ocampo, (Lord High), Executive Producer of World-Class Content, Creativity, Innovation, and High Impact" (Productora Ejecutiva de Contenidos de Clase Mundial, Creatividad, Innovación y Alto Impacto... It was over his rejection of the role that Sebastián Rulli finally took in "Papá, Todo Madre". He didn't like the character or the story, but Lord High insisted his exclusivity contract demanded he accept the role. Evidently, there went Fernando's exclusivity contract out the window.

I wonder where Stevey is and how he is doing in his world-wide travels?

Victoria—
How wonderful to know this.

TO ALL:—Any comment to be posted in a thread that is over a week old comes to a monitor, instead of posting automatically. This helps us block spam and trolls before they get posted—and there are a lot. Sometimes it takes a day for us to see it and approve it for posting, so wait a bit before trying to post the same comment two or three times.

Oh, the last time I heard from Stevey, he was exploring the Amazon jungle from the Bolivian side. That was about a year ago. I guess it’s about time to check on his whereabouts.

It would be great to know how he is doing.!!

Anita,

I think I just mistakenly posted to the wrong page. I thought SaraAnne, you, and Esther were posting to the El Gran Final page and kept wondering why Blogger was eating my posts. Haha!! Now I understand. 😂

Hey Guys! its Marta (formerly known in Telenovela-world as marta I, here as martaivett.)

Hi, Marta!
