La Fea Más Bella #152 11/23/06 But You Say He's Just A Friend

Sitting in Le Noir, Lety and Tomas make up. Fernando is intently watching from the bar. As Lety and Tomas hug, Fernando mutters “Aha! That’s how I wanted to see you, Leticia Padilla Solis!” [In the teaser commercial yesterday, they show this piece and the clever announcer responds “No, Fern, it’s how Lety wanted you to see her!” LOL] A woman in a slinky dress comes over to greet Fern. It seems they know each other. Fern says he can’t talk. She tells him not to be a sangron [literally I think this is sanguine, although in Spanish this is an insult, like “bad-mannered”]. Fern tries to walk away but she pulls him back to the bar. Meanwhile, Lety makes a toast with Tomas “to us” and kisses Tomas on the cheek. The woman with Fern hangs all over him but he is only interested in getting a good view of Lety’s table.

At Lola’s place, PM and Lola are discussing Saimon. Lola asks again how PM really feels about him. PM says he makes her feel great. Lola speculates that that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s love. PM assures Lola that she (PM) loves him.

Lety asks for the check. Tomas wonders why, since they haven’t even eaten yet. Lety says they are not going to eat; they are going somewhere else. Tomas – “Where?” Lety - “Where do people go right after they make up and have a bottle of wine?” Tomas – “Yikes! Are you planning to take advantage of me?” As Tomas pays the bill, he complains about the prices again and says that thank goodness this is the last time he will have to pay with paper money; he is picking up the Filmo Imagen credit card tomorrow. As they leave, Lety instructs Tomas at every step, “Pull out my chair, hug me, look happy.” They walk out still pressed together in a tight hug, cheek to cheek, in an awkward quasi-waltz. When they walk out, the swiggle-mobile is already waiting for them outside. Tomas whispers to the valet that that’s not his girlfriend, this is just the way they get along. He jips the valet out of his tip again! [I’m surprised the valet didn’t do something vengeful to the car.]

Fern follows them out of the restaurant. Another woman tries to grab his attention but he flies right by. Guess what, his car is waiting for him too! Talk about service! He trails Lety and Tomas in his car, saying “You want to play with me, Leticia? Okay, let’s play.”

Lety sees that Fern is following them and tells Tomas to stop the car. Tomas pulls over, and so does Fern. Lety orders Tomas to act romantic. He wants to know how long she’s going to string her boss along this way. Lety’s not sure but she figures until Fern stops playing with her. Tomas thinks it’s an exciting game, as if they are being pursued by a jealous husband. Lety laments that he’s only suffering because he cares so much about his business. She gives us a timeline of upcoming events: Tomorrow Fern’s parents will arrive, the next day is the big Cannes shindig, the day after that is the even bigger board meeting, and two days after that is Fern’s wedding. She grows angrier as she explains to Tomas that the night before, Fern kissed her because he wanted to make sure that she would rig the balance sheets. Tomas observes that he got in big trouble for being her unfaithful boyfriend, while at the same time she’s going around with and kissing her engaged boss. Lety confesses that she was weak to let him kiss her, but she is determined not to let it happen again, since he’s only being amoroso (romantic) in order to keep his company safe. He’ll do anything to save his ass, even kiss her. Tomas agrees, “Yeah, Don Fernanado is nuts, he would probably even be willing to boink you again; talk about nuts! …Woops, did I say that aloud?” Lety looks like she wants to strangle him. He tries to change the subject by asking if she really plans to cook the books for Fern. She hasn’t decided. Tomas thinks she should get a big bonus for that type of work. Lety notes that he has allowed her to spend all that money at Le Noir and even agreed to let her keep the swiggle-mobile. He also promised to cancel the wedding after the board meeting, but she is sure that won’t happen. The Letter from Omar the Imbecile spelled out in detail that all the promises are just a ploy.

Fern is still parked behind them, not realizing how obvious it is that he is stalking them. Marcia calls. Fern answers and pretends he’s happy to hear from her. He says he’s just leaving the office. She wants to talk (and talk and talk) about how excited she is and about all the stuff she’s checking off the wedding to-do list. Fern impatiently rolls his eyes and hold the phone with his shoulder so he can make talking motions with his hands. He promises to be home in half an hour and hangs up.

Lety thinks the board meeting will be a terrible disaster, because Ariel is determined to sell his part if the company. Tomas’s phone rings. Tomas does not want to answer. Lety offers to answer, grabs the phone, and sees that it’s Alicia the Oxi. Lety realizes that Tomas never called to cancel his date with her. She yells at him for it, but he says it’s not so easy, because when he calls to call it off, he’ll be cutting off the whole thing off, not just the date. Lety seems to understand.

Alicia hangs up her phone and gripes about Tomas standing her up.

Lety explains to Tomas that Alicia is only interested in him to spite Lety, and of course, for his money. She compares Alicia using Tomas to Fern using Lety, and she doesn’t want Tomas to end up hurt like her. Tomas replies that he’s not as dumb as she thinks. He knows Alicia just wants his money, but this is the only way he would ever stand a chance with someone like her, and that’s okay because it gives chance to fulfill his dream of going out with her. But he understands that this is not acceptable to Lety, and so he will give up his dream of boinking the Oxi. Lety is sympathetic. She tells Tomas to drop her off at home so that he can go pick up the Oxi. Tomas can’t believe it. Woohoo! He kisses Lety in gratitude and they drive off. Fern follows.

PM tells Lola she wants to find a man who can provide a better life for PM Jr. [yeah, not to mention a big house and a swiggle-mobile for her]. Lola wonders why PM is with Saimon, since he can’t provide what she wants.

Lety and Tomas arrive at her place. In the car, Lety gives Tomas her blessing to go after the Oxi, but gives him three conditions: 1)he can’t lie to Lety anymore, 2)he can’t give Alicia any money, and 3)he can’t get emotionally attached (I guess to Alicia and the money) because this is just a game and it will be over very soon. Tomas promises to comply and thanks Lety profusely. He says he’s going to put Alicia to the test. Then he notices Stalker Fern has just driven up.

Fern is relieved that Tomas brought Lety straight home.

PM says Saimon should not have left work without her. Lola thinks PM is mighty self-centered. Just then the doorbell rings. It’s Saimon.

Alicia calls Tomas again. Lety wants to listen in. Tomas answers. Alicia says she is on ascuas (on live coals… antsy or impatient, I think). Is he coming or what? Tomas explains that he just dropped Lety off and is on his way to pick her up. Lety congratulates him on his professionalism and skill in the category of being unfaithful to her. Tomas promises he won't spend any of her or Filmo Imagen’s money. Lety groans that Alicia will surely have a field day tomorrow when she blabs all about her date with her rich new boyfriend. Lety does a great imitation of Alicia “Aaaaay Maaaarcia…” Since she knows that Stalker Fern is watching, she orders Tomas to kiss her goodnight.

Lola let’s Saimon in and tells him PM is sleeping. She won’t wake PM up because she’s mad at Saimon. Saimon pouts.

Lety and Tomas perform a romantic and dramatic goodbye scene for the Fern’s viewing pleasure. Tomas drives off and half a second later Stalker Fern drives up to her door and calls sternly “LETICIA PADILLA SOLIS.” She pretends to be impactada. She asks what he’s doing there. He shushes her. He says he came to confirm what he has always suspected. He saw everything, absolutely everything: Le Noir, the handholding, the affections, the kisses, and the obvious happiness. He wants to now why, Why, WHY! Lety is indignant but she tells him to calm down. Fern says he won’t calm down, HE WONT CALM DOWN because she denied everything but tonight he saw everything for himself. He is P.O.'ed! Lety wants to know what exactly she did wrong.

Saimon tells Lola about his computer class, but says it didn’t go so well, because he didn’t understand anything. He thinks that he’s not good enough for PM.

Tomas arrives at Alicia’s building. He calls her and says in his best 007 voice that it’s “Mora, Tomas Mora.” Alicia invites him up. Before going in, Tomas goes through his pre-Alicia ritual with the talcum powder and cologne gargle. He wishes he had remembered to get flowers, then grabs some twigs from the lawn. He thinks they look exotic.

Lola goes to PM’s room and orders her to go talk to Saimon. PM obeys like a 6-year old when you tell her she has to eat her broccoli. Lola thought bubbles that PM doesn’t deserve Saimon.

Standing by her front door, Lety insists that she and Tomas are just friends [Anyone remember Bismark E from the 80s? “oh baby yoooou’ve got what I need, but you say he’s just a friend”] . Fern agrees that they are obviously great friends, and wonders if they played “doctor” together when they were kids. Lety says that she and Tomas had a fight that day over money but that they cleared it up and made amends. Besides, she says, how dare he ask about her relationship with Tomas when he kisses Marcia everyday and goes home to her practically every night. He says that, actually, he hasn’t touched Marcia or any other woman since the first night when he was with her. As a matter of fact, he can’t be with any woman who is not Lety. Lety tells him not to lie to her. She begins to walk away. Fern stops her. He grabs her tenderly by the arm. F - “I swear by the most sacred thing in my life, which is you, Lety, that I’m telling you the truth.” L- “Yeah, right.” He caresses her cheek and begs her “Please.” Lety says he drank too much. Fern agrees but says he wants to kiss her. He goes in for it. Lety goes in too, but then backs away. [Darn!] Fern looks deep in her eyes. She can’t help it; she looks deep into his. F- “Please?” He goes in for a kiss again, she yields. It’s beautiful… but before any lips touch, Robpop opens the front door [Darn it Robopop!]. Fern is smooth. He pretends Lety is helping him get something out of his eye. Robopop wants to know why Fern is yelling at his precious and eternally little baby girl. They tell him Fern wasn't yelling, he was singing. He doesn’t buy it and tells Fern to watch himself. As Lety and Fern go inside, Fern gets in his car. He can’t believe he just yelled at Lety. He thinks he must be going insane without her.

Alicia takes out her last bottle of wine and sprays herself and the room before opening the door for Tomas. She’s not sure what to do with the twigs he brought her. She puts them down and shows him around her apartment. He is interested in seeing the bed. Alicia excuses herself and goes into another room. She removes a layer of clothing. Tomas struggles as he tries to open the bottle of wine. Alicia thought bubbles that it’s time to put her plan into action. Tomas is hungry, he goes to Alicia’s fridge but it’s completely empty. Alicia calls her house phone from her cell phone and then goes back to the living room to answer it. She has a pretend conversation with the creditor and begs them to let her keep her car.

Saimon and PM talk. They both pout. He explains that he didn’t stand her up; he had to leave to go to the computer class. PM say “woops, sorry” and they make up. [That storyline took a good seven minutes worth of novela time that Lety and Fern could have made better use of by making out! Darn it!]

Alicia explains to Tomas that the creditors are going to keep her car if she doesn’t come up with the money she owes. Tomas offers to help. Alicia feigns humility.

Lety lies to her mom about the fuss outside with Fern. Julieta tells her to either tell her the truth or not to tell her anything at all. Lety groans that she has crucial decisions to make about her life. She’s not sure if she’s strong enough to handle it. Julieta gives a pep-talk.

Alicia continues with her crocodile tears and damsel-in-distress act. Tomas says he’ll help her get the money she needs. [Oh dear, I really hope they reject his credit card application.]

Goodnight everyone... woops, I mean good morning...

It was you and me, Alma, on duty on Thanksgiving. It was a great episode, wasn't it, I loved watching Fern hiding behind everything in the restaurant.

Remember Tomas said he had made a killing on his investments so I think he thinks he can spend money on Alicia without dipping into Filmo Imagen money (of course, it was FI money he invested so that's a murky justification).

Thanks so much Alma for clearing up last night's show.
I love Fernando with his yearning for Lety and unfulfilled passion. Whew! Darn that Robopapa!
I like the way Lety has gradually become more attractive and less goofy. I'm glad it's such a slow process.
Tomas is sinking deeper and deeper into the quicksand. I just can't see any hope for him.
Carrie L.

It looks like Tomas and Alicia are going to sleep together and if this happens it will be as hard to watch as Lety's quincenera flashback.
Why did Robopop have to open the door just as L & F were about to kiss, this is just too torturous.
Why can't Fern figure out that Lety found the letter, her change of behavior has been so abrupt.Oh well,I guess this is just the way of novelas.

Alma, you are so right....they should not waste time on PM and Saimon when it could be Fernando and Lety. Terrific recap, as always.

Would love to be in Monterrey on 12-01-2006 where Jaime Camil will be performing in concert..

Excellent recap...Oh Robopop...this explains much of Lety and Tomas's social retardation.

I am sooo over PM & Simon...
