Duelo de Pasiones - Tuesday 3/27 - In which Thelma tries to calm her raging hormones...with MURDER.

"Alina my love!" Emilio holds a wet and fallen Alina but he cannot revive her. He orders Orlando to ride ahead and have Vera prepare a bed for the unconscious Alina.

Thelma paces in her room and complains to her auntie that she feels responsible for Jose's death and it has brought out the worst in her. If she has to lie she'll lie, if she has to betray she'll betray, if she has to kill she'll kill. Thelma gets evil squinty snake eyes and auntie beats a hasty retreat.

A drenched Orlando enters and tells Thelma to look out the window. She flounces over in time to see Emilio carrying unconscious Alina on horseback. Thelma ain't happy and Orlando gets sarcastic, he says their "hero" had the nerve to cry "Alina mi amor" in front of him. Thelma swears she wants to kill that maldita Flor. Orlando is all "No way, if you get Emilio then I get Flor. You lift one finger against her and I'll blab about your adventure in the Devil's Cave!" Thelma scowls but agrees to help Orlando separate Emilio and Flor.

Emilio tells Vera to cover Flor with blankets and keep her warm until the Dr. arrives in the a.m. He sees the burn on Vera's arm and asks what happened. Vera's eyes dart nervously around the room.

Angel is, you guessed it, coughing. Sexy Nurse Susi tells him that his treatment is no longer working. (Did it ever work? I think not.) She advises him to return to Puebla to see a specialist and get new treatment. Stupid suicidal Angel says he'll never leave as long as Emilio stays in Escondidaville with Alina.

Vera lies to Emilio and says she burned herself, right Rosita? Rosita reluctantly agrees. Emilio tells her to watch Alina during the night and then buy some new clothes for her in the morning. It's about time Flor got some new duds.

Rosita tells Emilio she's glad that God touched his heart and that he cares for Flor. Flor loved him for a long time before he showed up in Escondidaville. She knows because Flor told her. "Flor loves you sir and she always has." Emilio actually smiles. Sort of.

Efigenio is guarding his cousin Arcadio. He asks Arcadio if pobre Jose was really the father of Alina. Arcadio says no, how could Efigenio think such a thing? Jose came here to get his woman, her name is...hmmm, he can't remember. Another guy takes Efigenio's place and he and Tonki stand guard.

Rosita tells Emilio over and over how Flor has always loved him. He says Flor tried to tell him the truth but he responded with scorn and reproachments. He strokes unconscious Flor and says things are going to change.

Mariana, Malena and Dr. Love are still in the funeral home. As Mariana weeps on her daughter's casket Dr. Love complains to Malena that Mariana said she wouldn't marry him. Malena says give her time, wait and see if that guy (Jose) returns, see how things go between them. Dr. Love might have a chance now that his puppet and Jose are dead. He needs to get rid of the bow-tie. Why does James Bond look smashing in a bow tie while Dr. Love looks like a doofus?

Emilio talks to unconscious Flor and kisses her cheek. He says he will seek her forgiveness.

Meanwhile, Thelma lounges in her slinky yellow robe trying to figure out a way to get Emilio back to Puebla. The only thing he's interested in is that damn Flor! She's got to do something. Angel coughs in the background. "Of course! Angel your dear brother, he's my solution," she smirks.

Fast forward through Emilio and unconscious Alina. Whoaaa...he has a fuzzy white fantasy that they are getting married. He gives her a gross lamprey wide-mouth bass kiss. Oh wait, no...It's Flor's dream. She mumbles his name. Bleh.

Rosita tends to Vera's bad burn and says she should have told Emilio the truth. The truth is always the best, that's why she told Vera about what happened to her. Vera curses Don Max. Rosita tells Vera it's worse than she thought, she's pregnant! Castulo walks around the corner and hears Rosita. He gets all mean-looking and says to himself that he did this to her. Vera exclaims to Rosita it's a tragedy, what will she do? Castulo interrupts to "grab some fruit" he says. Oh yeah, he's good at grabbing fruit all right. He totally checks Rosita out before leaving. Pig. Vera says she has never liked Castulo.

Emilio tells Orlando he needs his help. He has decided to separate from Thelma and he needs a good argument/reason for validating the divorce. Orlando is impactado.

Emilio says his marriage to Thelma is a nightmare and he needs to get out. Orlando asks has Emilio forgotten the small detail of The Child? Emilio says he'll give the kid his name (gee thanks dad) and Thelma money, whatever it takes to get rid of that albatross around his neck. Orlando says he'll help. Liar.

The storm rages on.

Elias sniffs and kisses Soledad's monogrammed hankie. The one that Blanca found. Do you remember Blanca, Asshat? He sighs, "If Alvaro didn't exist then maybe you and I...ah Soledad, why do I fantasize, you have always been an impossible dream."

Cut to a wet and crying Soledad. She remembers her last meeting with Elias. "Elias, how different my life would have been with you. You loved me a lot, maybe you still love me, but now my heart is dry and closed to love, I feel only infinite hate."

Cut to Don Odio, I mean Loco, recalling Thelma saying that Jose called Flor his daughter. He mutters that Soledad is a liar and Alina is not his daughter. He knows it so why does it hurt so much? Lightning strikes as he sheds a tear.

Orlando has set up camp in Thelma's room and he's drinking her booze. She's not happy to hear that Emilio wants to leave her to be with Flor. She tells Orlando that she has a plan, she'll go into Angel's room and...

Nurse Susi and Vera are in the kitchen preparing a tray for Angel. Orlando comes in, gets rid of Vera and asks Susi to make him a cup of coffee. Instead of telling him to pour his own damn coffee she's a nurse not his servant, she stupidly complies. When her back is turned he replaces Angel's large white pill with two tiny ones. Surely Nurse Susi will notice this sudden change in medication, won't she?

Orlando reports his successful pill swap to Thelma. She says they will help Angel sleep through the night while she does her dirty work. "What will we do if he dies?" asks Orlando, perhaps a little late in the game. "All the better, he's a hindrance" she answers, "and when Emilio has to arrange his funeral in Puebla where all their friends live...well, we will have succeeded."

The storm rages on.

Stupid Nurse Susi gives Angel the two tiny sedatives instead of his usual big pill. She doesn't notice the change in medication. I think her shirt is too tight and is cutting off the blood to her brain. She tells him she hopes he sleeps through the storm. Ha! After she leaves, Angel whispers that he hopes he dreams of Alina and that nothing will wake him. Be careful what you wish for sonny!

Rosita runs into Don Max in the hallway. He gets sleazy and lecherous and they have a scuffle. He insults Santos and she slaps him then runs away. He smirks and says her slap enchants him.

Luba crouches down under an overhanging rock. She was on her way home when the storm trapped her there. She sits in the dark looking sad and worried. She has that flashback where she is standing in front of a young man, she chants and pulls out her vial filled with green fairy liquid. She puts it to his lips and he drinks. Back in the present she says "Gaspar my son, I don't want anything bad to happen to you. I don't want them to find us alive, especially you." Huh? I don't get it.

Thelma sneaks into Angel's room, says "you must die," removes his blanket, unbuttons his shirt, and opens the window. "Until never little bro-in-law, rest in peace."

She reports to Orlando that part one of their plan is completed. Angel will die and Emilio will return to Puebla, far from Flor.

The next morning she slips into Angel's room and closes the window. She has not been found out. Satisfaction!!

Alina tells Vera that she doesn't believe Emilio did all those nice things for her the night before, he thinks she's the daughter of a foreman, same old same old blah blah blah. Vera tries to convince her but Alina remains stubborn.

Don Loco sleeps with Soledad by his side. She's not wet or covered with hay and she's sleeping with a lot of jewelry on. He wakes up and reaches for her...it was only a dream, a damn dream. His hair is perfectly coiffed (it looks like he has hair plugs!) and the bed isn't even wrinkled. Who sleeps like that? My honey holds a six-hour judo class in his sleep every night. That's probably not normal either. It's the opposite end of the normal spectrum.

Luba leaves her sheltered overhang and steps out into the morning light. She is impactada by the damage and many mudslides the storm caused to the hillsides. The Virgencita must have been really angry. Uh oh, she remembers Gaspar spent the night wounded and alone. She must see her son!

Arcadio swears to Emilio and the other soldiers the he and Jose only came back so Jose could find his woman for his daughter's sake. Emilio asks if Alina is Jose's daughter. Arcadio says no, Jose's daughter lives in Mexico City. Orlando says Arcadio is lying, Thelma heard Jose call Alina "hija." They decide to let Arcadio go as they have no proof against him.

Thelma is on cloud nine and tells auntie they'll be going back to Puebla in no time. She has even started packing. "Don't tell me that you..?"asks auntie, horrified. "No no, I'm no assassin," Thelma says, "I just helped him along, he was practically dead anyway."

Oh dear, tragic music plays and we are at Marianita's burial. Mariana is hysterical and tries to jump into the open grave but Dr. Love and Malena hold her back. Juanito throws a flower and fistful of dirt into the hole. Mariana howls at God, "Why? Why?"

Alina has bathed and is fresh as a flower (heh heh). Vera arrives with some bags of new clothes and shoes. Thank goodness, I loathed Flor's ribboned wedgies...so impractical for roaming about the countryside.

When Luba gets home she's relieved to see Gaspar sitting at the table, his pecs bulging over his bandaged chest. (OK, I was relieved about that last part.) He's pouting because she didn't come home the night before. He was worried about her. She lights up a doobie and tells him she was at the hacienda and got caught in the rain on her way home. Gaspar says the patron should have put her up for the night. Bad patron! They're all bad! Luba takes a toke and asks Gaspar who shot him. "An ungrateful soldier, Ma. If it weren't for me the whirlpool would have swallowed him. I saved him and he tried to kill me."

Luba tells Gaspar to stay away from La Rinconada and to forget "that woman." Gaspar says he's not going to forget his child, and when it's born he's going to take it away. "Virgencita help me," she sighs,"those ideas are going to get you killed. If you die I'm going with you." This agitates Gaspar, "No ma, I don't want anything to happen to you," he caresses her face and kisses her forehead, "if you die I'll die."

Emilio and Orlando are discussing Jose-Gomez-Alina's-dad-yes-or-no when Nurse Susi rushes downstairs. Something is wrong with Angel!!

Mariana cries over Marianita's teddy bear and yells at God some more.

Angel is practically coughing his guts out. Orlando, Emilio, Thelma and Nurse Susi stand around and watch Angel gasp for air. Nurse Susi is a stone fox but she is the worst nurse ever.

Don Loco and Don Max encounter one another on the road. Max says Loco's going to La Rinconada, right? And he's not going for any good reason, only to start something with Emilio, right? Loco can't believe Max would defend Emilio. "Hey, he's my blood and I don't want to become a traitor to my own people," says Max. Loco says chill out, he only wants to verify that they have the girl under control. They do some more chest puffing and Loco rides off toward La Rinconada. Max glares after him and says "It's too late to start distrusting me Alvaro. It was I who fed the jealousy that poisoned your calm and destroyed your life."

Alina, looking good with combed and curled hair, worries about Tonki. Vera promises he is well-cared for. Jaime enters to tell them that young master Angel is dying!

Alina rushes to Angel's bedside. He wheezes while she weeps "don't die, don't die."

Emilio paces while waiting for the doc. He tells Orlando he blames himself for Angel's illness. Thelma stalks in and shrieks "Don't blame yourself, if anyone is to blame it's Flor!" They have words. Boring repetitive ones.

The doc arrives and he and Emilio run upstairs. Thelma bares her lower teeth to Orlando.

"Save him doctor!" begs Alina. The doc kicks them all out except Useless Nurse Susi who will aid in the examination.

Cut to scenes of local people who were displaced by the storm. The soldiers are feeding them and hauling emergency supplies. Many people are dirty, injured and crying, but the soldiers will see them through this tragedy. This scene brought to you courtesy of the Mexican national army.

Arcadio tells Efigenio he plans to leave Escondidaville and go to Mexico City because this place makes him crazy. I'm thinking he'll run into Mariana, why else would they have this scene?

Thelma tries, again, to turn Emilio against Flor by blaming her for Angel's illness. Emilio shakes his head and walks out. Thelma is annoyed and looks like she wants to kill someone. Of course she will, the only questions are who and when.

Don Max rides up and Auntie Opera tells him that Angel is deathly ill. Don Max snaps that Angel should be in Puebla, tell Thelma to convince Emilio that they should all return to Puebla right away! He stalks off and auntie comments that it seems like Don Max wants to get rid of his nephews ASAP. Why?

Mariana sees a ghostly vision of Marianita on her little bed. Marianita tells her mami not to cry, she's fine, she has her hair, she doesn't want mami to be sad. Mariana reaches out to her daughter's ghostly hand but touches nothing. She cries out what will she do without her princess, her angel, her baby?

The doctor tells Emilio that Angel is very sick, he doesn't think he'll survive the crisis. Emilio begs him, "please tell me you're wrong!" The doc says he can only hope he's mistaken, and God knows it's his greatest hope to free Angel from death's grip, but the truth is the truth, and as hard as it is he must tell the truth...Angel is beyond hope. Surely Emilio is impactado, but he looks the same as always.

Great re-cap Sylvia - Gracias! We had our own tormenta (storm) that wrecked my reception from the satellite so I didn't get to see the end. About your sentence:

"Max glares after him and says "It's too late to start distrusting me Alvaro. It was I who fed the jealousy that poisoned your calm and destroyed your life."

Whaaaaaa? What is that about? I know that Maximo had some interest in Soledad for himself but it didn't seem strong enough to warrent messing with Don Loco's head that way. Was there some other reason that he wanted to be the Iago guy to Don Loco's Othello? And isn't that Orlando's purpose in the novela? (being the Iago guy I mean)

Estoy confundida (I'm confused)

PS. If they all take their horses out in the storm, who dries the saddles so they don't get mold on them? Or is the tack room air conditioned?

Thanks, Sylvia~~Once again, your recap was great on so many levels. I must go to work [Dang it] , so I can't mention every point I loved . However, one quote springs immediately to mind : ''DO you remember Blanca, Asshat?'' That one will live in my mind for awhile. I was thinking about Elias sniffing and fondling that hanky. Do you remember Adolfosolis [Manuel always said his first and last names as if they were one name] in Alborada? He carried Matilde's handkerchief for a looong time. He used to tuck it into his jacket after kissing it and gazing at itfor hours at a time . Sighhhh. Since most women don't carry hankies today, what do you think today's equivalent would be?? Perhaps, a blackberry: ''Ah, this is Tiffany's blackberry. I remember how she used to ignore me for long stretches of time while she talked to business assocciates all over the globe and took over small companies. Good times. So many memories. Tiffanyyyyy!!! Come back ! I loveeee youoooo!'' And, one more mention---NurseSusi--1]the nurses around here all wear those really baggy loose scrubtype tops and pants..you can't really tell what's going on under there.I've never seen a nurse wearing skintight clothing. 2] Doesn't NurseSusi seem more like the type of gal Orlando/Eddie Haskell would really be interested in? I guess that he only wants Florina because Emiliooo wants her. Next, I am so glad to see Gaspar [and his pecs] up and around and obsessing about the baby again. Also, I thought that TonkiDonki was under house arrest along with Arcadio , so I'm relieved to hear that TonkiDonki was actually a guard dog. Finally, I am wondering if Adela is still allowed to style Soledad's hair, or if we will watch her stylish look begin to fade. ^^^^^ Susanlynn, late for work again

susanlynn, I am dying over here and I am afraid my boss is going to walk over and catch me.

I have to learn to read your comments at work but I can't help it they always bring a make a dull day better.

Loved your side comments Sylvia, As always!

I guess if Alina has to be a maid, Tonki has to go to work too, as a guard dog!

I am still not catching the drift of the Luba flashbacks either. The green potion, etc. When she was worried about Gaspar from under the rocks she was looking out at the mountainside that had been washed away. I thought maybe she was thinking about the people who had lost their homes. For once it was good to be living in a cave!

I actually about a little more than 1/2 hour of this show.

I saw when Orlando switched medicines (I too thought Nurse Suzi would surely catch on, I mean one can surely tell the difference between one horse pill and two baby aspirin, eye roll), Elias caressing or whatever the hanky, Alina dreaming and Emilioo asking Orlando to help him with a divorce from Thelma. Now I remember why I don't watch this, I just wanted to scream at the TV and I think I did too.

Very nice recap...I rarely watch more than a few minutes of this.
I am very glad to see you embraced the term "AssHat", it is so pliable, so useful in many, many of life's daily scenerios.

Oh Angel, you haven't even begun to live yet...by the by do we know what is wrong with Angel? Other than doing the big Camille?

Beckster, I think it was said in the first epi that Angel has a chronic lung infection. Why, we don't know, he's just always "been sickly." Maybe he has a compromised immune system. The thing is, You'd think two weeks in a hospital with an IV drip of antibiotics couldn't lick this thing. It must be some kind of bacteria that resists antibiotics.

Maybe Angel has Necrotizing fasciitis or as we lamen call it the Flesh Eating Bacteria. That would explain his being resistant to the bacteria because its busy eating up his insides.

I caught about three seconds of this last night too and I saw Angel pulling an Anna Nicole by taking injections. perhaps that is how the bacteria was introduced?

Perhaps Angel and his nurse Susy are getting on my nerves.

Thanks Sylvia for a funny recap. Loved the hair plug comments!

I didnt check my spelling/typing. I meant to say we Laymen. Not lamen.

I thought you were introducing a new low-cost lunch - lamen noodles.

Don Odio -- hahahaha, I like it! This was a very well written recap, much better than the actual episode, in fact.

I hope Elias doesn't marry Soledad. I don't like the way he's forgotten Blanca so quickly. It makes him seem a bit creepy.

Oh, and Katie's comment above about the relationship between Don Max and Don Loco. I think Alfonsina may be to blame for taking the letter to the wrong person but It was Max who kept saying "you go guy!" To Loco. I guess this means that not even he believed Soledad cheated on Loco. He was just doing it to stay on Don Loco's side and reap whatever benefits of that came his way. Now that Loco is just complicating his life, he's willing to dump him over the side.

Things must have been sweet for him when he and Loco were knocking back Tequilas, before Emilio and his posse showed up and Flor was just some girl who lived in a cave.

There is a kind of Iago aspect to Max but not as much as Orlando and Emilio. Orlando is jealous of Emilio and will do anything to bring him down. I just don't see Max as that ambitious.

(And I can't believe we're comparing this telenovela to Shakespeare!)

I think that some way, some how we can trace plots and characters of many soap operas and telenovelas back to Will Skakespeare's plays. He was the original soap opera writer. Lots of others have stolen his ideas over the years.~~~Susanlynn

Wasn't Shakespeare in his day a playwright for the common folk? I don't think it's too far a stretch to compare telenovela plots and characters to those of the bard. Switched babies, unrequited love, murders in the dead of night...yep, that and more. Duelo does kind of remind me of Othello.

I think Don Max is out for number one. He gives face time to Loco's rants because Loco has power in the nation, but it sure sounds like he has deliberately tried to send Loco off the deep end. Why? For fun? I wonder what he hopes to gain.

I continue to be confused by Luba's flashbacks and history. What do we know? Old caftan guy is probably the same as young caftan guy. Luba and Gaspar were crying by Gaspar's pa's deathbed, is he caftan guy? If so why would they cry if he's such a jerk? I recall that Luba accidentally killed the young man with her potion. She hides her special box that she was supposed to give Don Loco when Loco's mom died. Does it contain something that would help Luba get revenge on Loco? Loco's mom was a qualquiera so do we know who Loco's birth father really is? It sounded like Gaspar killed somebody accidentally. Are Luba and Gaspar hiding from someone?

Sylvia, as always, thanks for the terrific recap with so many delightful asides! The last 48 hours the administrivia at work has overtaken my life with a vengeance and the recaps are saving me. I appreciated finally knowing what grosero really means, too.

If I were Thelma’s aunt, I’d be worrying for my own life around that girl. She’s a loose cannon! I agree with Rosita, Vera should have told Emilio that his wife went wacko and touched a hot iron skillet to her arm when she wouldn’t repeat something Thelma didn’t quite catch while she was eavesdropping.

I want to know why opening a window is going to kill Angel. That’s just weird.

Too bad Arcadio couldn’t remember the name José has told him. That’d really help, but I suppose it’s too much to hope that the loose connections will get cleared up soon.

At least Gaspar’s still alive. For now.

Jeanne

Sylvia, maybe we can just chalk Luba's flashbacks to all the pakalolo she smokes.

Jeanne

Very weird---people are dying from drinking water and sleeping in a room with an open window. Uh-oh, I've done both today . Should I be worried? The whole Luba-Gaspar-Caftanman thing has me confused, but then , I can never figure out mysteries. I think I don't paay close enough attention. I think Luba is tied to Don Loco somehow...I just don't know how. And, that box and the bottle of green liquid on the shelf??? I will scream if we never find out what's up with that.~~~Susanlynn, too tired to think about it now

Dr. Love is inherently and profoundly a doofus no matter what kind of tie he wears. Shelly
