ZORRO; Monday July 23, 2007: Two funerals & a wedding, and with a few fast forwards in time, the de la Vega family grows.
We are all cordially invited to the wedding of Esmeralda Sanchez and Diego de la Vega. Padre Tomás is presiding over the nuptials. A mangled Mangle is crashing the service. Outside the church, the pirates are poised to take over the city.
Meanwhile, Tobias is drowning his sorrows in the local cantina and bemoaning how women only make you suffer. Another patron is looking for a fight (methinks it is a pirate) and soon Tobi is being roughed up.
Across town, Fernando is confronted by men with swords (also pirates). Fernando, as noted before, is one bad a*s and he takes on the pirates, killing them all. Sadly, his trusty sidekick, Jose ---introduced for the first time today--- is killed in the skirmish. This just goes to show that on this show, only the minor characters can die right away. Fernando doesn’t mourn the loss too much, he thinks only of his daughter, Mangle.
As Fernando wanders the mean streets of LA, soldiers are being knocked around by the pirates on the rampage.
Olmos is talking with Gerardo. He’s convinced that Mangle is still alive and waiting for him. Gerardo isn’t so sure, but figures that Olmos must really be in love to still pine for Mangle. Olmos tells him that it isn’t love, it’s a curse.
Fernando makes it to the church and mingles with the guests. No one seems overly concerned that he’s just walking around the church. All eyes are on the couple of the hour. FS spots Mangle and recognizes her, not by her flame red hair---which is hidden under her black cloak---but by a bracelet she’s wearing which was obviously a gift from him at some point in the past.
SAM/Sgt. Garcia spots Fernando, and not wanting any problems for his dear Esme and Diego, approaches the former governor. FS tells SAM that the pirates are attacking the city.
Somewhere else in town, Catalina and her father are running late for the wedding. Cat comments that they must be the only ones not at the wedding. The pirates take this opportunity to nab the only woman not in the church, and the haul off Cat. The intend to use her as a prize for the pirate who grabs the most loot. Tobi hears her screams as he’s being tossed out of the bar.
Fernando weaves in and out of the guests at the wedding. Diego and Esme are taking their vows. PT is uttering the “speak now or forever hold your peace” line. This would be a perfect time for Mangle to make a scene, but she chooses not to do the obvious. PT pronounces Diego and Esme husband and wife and the newlyweds share a kiss. Mangle pulls out her gun now and Fernando jumps in the way. Mangle fires and hits her father. Complete mayhem ensues. The crowd freaks and Maria Pia screams “NO!” Mangle stands still, holding the gun. Her vanity gets the best of her, she spends time covering her face instead of getting off another shot. She addresses the newlyweds and tells them that the bullet was intended for them (which one, I don’t recall, but perhaps she was hoping for a two for one special). She tells them that she was almost eaten alive by the cannibals (I’ve used the expression when talking about mosquitoes, but never heard it used for cannibals). She’s angry that no one came to her rescue. We don’t find out how she escaped, but we can surmise that her hellish personality and evil ways easily overcame the ever lethargic creepy cannibals. Mangle heads out of the church. No one makes an attempt to subdue her, which I find rather odd, but oh well. She sees Olmos outside the church and tells him that she’s going to kill him. He says he wants to see her face before he kills her (que romantico). We get a glimpse of her face---she looks rather ashen and a little worse for the wear, but I guess I was expecting more of a mauled up look. Mangle shoots Olmos just as he stabs her. They fall to the cobblestone street together, face-to-face, almost in an embrace. They are dead (I thought Olmos was like the Energizer Bunny, and he’d keep going and going—his 9 lives must have been used up).
Tobias takes on the man carting Cat away. Tobi stabs the pirate and he’s shocked at his own actions. Cat tells her husband she loves him.
SAM and the troops fight the pirates. The soldiers are winning. SAM fights dirty---kicking one of the pirates in the family jewels.
Maria Pia begs Agapito to save Fernando. Pito says it is grave, FS was hit in the heart. Since it is the last show, and because there is some repenting needed, Fernando will not be getting the Zorro gunshot cure. He really is going to die. Knowing the end is near, FS asks Alejandro and Diego to forgive him. Diego grants him forgiveness in the name of his mother. Fernando has flashes of Regina/Purina or Yumali (one of the two---I can’t tell, they’re identical after all). He says she’s here. Meanwhile, Maria Pia is sobbing over his body. Alej tells Fernando that he has their forgiveness (seems the right thing to do, since he just took the bullet intended for either your son or his bride). Fernando tells Maria Pia that wherever he’s going, he’ll always love her. Fernando dies.
We are next treated to a montage of Fernando’s and Mangle’s funeral (jointly held, hopefully Pito cut a deal with the family---perhaps this is where Mangle got the two for one deal). Padre Tomás’s voice talks about Fernando finally finding peace and not knowing what ruled Mangle’s actions.

The family is on a picnic. Diego and Esme try to sneak a little kissing in behind a tree, but Alejandrito interrupts. Diego and little Al go fishing and have the same gestures (scratching their behinds at the same time).
Cifuentes invites SAM to share a drink. The soldiers comment on how peaceful things have been since Montero died. Cifuentes suspects that Zorro left with the Queen, but SAM is sure that he’s still around, watching out for LA.
Diego lets Tornado go, fly and be free. He encourages Tornado to go find a mare, but make sure that he brings her around to meet the family.
MONTHS LATER
Esme tells Diego that she’d like to have a sister for little Alej. Diego says he knows how to make little girls. They disappear underneath the covers.
MONTHS LATER
Esme gives birth to a daughter (I guess Diego really did know what he was doing), they name her Elena. General Alej likes the name. SAM arrives shortly after the birth to say that the Queen is dead. The town mourns.
YEARS LATER
A new military commander is coming to the city. Esme fears that Diego may come out of retirement and she says that now that they have children she doesn’t want him returning as Zorro.
Diego starts to train Alejandrito (all growed up now). They practice with swords, guns, and the whip. Diego shows him the Fox Cave. They discuss how the new commander is causing problems in the town and they need to confront him. Diego asks his son if he’s willing to be Zorro. Alejandro is not so sure, but Diego assures him that he’s been well trained and that he has his trust. Just then, Bernardo arrives with a horse for Alejandro. That seems to be the selling point. Alejandro dresses in the Zorro clothes (apparently well preserved over the years, and conveniently just the right size).
In full daylight, Alejandro takes his horse out for a ride, in his Zorro attire. Esme and Diego watch him leave. Diego is proud and says that he hopes his son will find love just like he did. Esme and Diego kiss and Zorro waves from a distance. THE END

My favorite part was Alphonso's return. I hadn't thought of that.
They could have ended it with the picnic/fishing trip as far as I'm concerned. I don't care for the Alejandro Zorro. Didn't like his personality or looks.
Or they could use history to develop another plot. From 1810 to 1821 Mexican fought & won its independence from Spain. Diego was born "in the 1790's" according to Telemundo, so he could have been 40ish & his son 20ish toward the end of that revolution. Alejandro Sr. mentioned about the war with Mexico intensifing. Alejandro Jr./Zorro would come in handy to the freedom-fighting Mexicans! Do I hear "sequel" ???
It seems likely that McCulley (originator of Zorro) was inspired by Mexican history. The plans for the Mexican fight for independence were made by a secret organization (former a literary society) & a liberal priest (Hidelgo) lead the fight.
Did you see Harry Geithner (Montero) on Correando this Tues. morning? I wish someone would do a recap 'cause it looked like he was having fun. The program embarrassed him by showing footage on the Zorro set with Harry dancing silly & Andrea Lopez (Mariangel) laughing at his antics.
Speaking of Andrea Lopez, I can't find much about her on-line. She is a wonderful actress. You'd think she would have been in lots of novelas, etc.
I'm looking forward to seeing what the rest of y'all thought about the last episode. I'm already missing the characters, even the villains. :*- (

Should have added this before my posting, sorry this is so late....it was a crazy day. Thanks to everyone for posting comments thoughout this Zorro adventure. It has been nice sharing our entertainment pleasure together.

All in all, I was pretty disappointed with the ending. I agree Alice, they could have just ended it at the picnic/fishing trip. That would have been fine. I found the constant, 6mos. later, 1 year later irritating.
Still, I am going to miss this show. I do like a good swashbuckler and did get a kick out of the wackiness of this show--Amazons and hunchbacks and pirahnas, OH MY!!
I'll be lurking around Caray Caray. I'm still trying to get into Juan and I've started watching Amar Sin Limites.
Funny how I seem to have less time for television in the summer than I do during the school year. Oh well, some how I'll fit it all in.

And I wasn't expecting DiEsme to break out in tears at Fer's death, but a little acknowledgement that he just saved their lives might have been a nice thing to do...

Wow, our villains got offed like in the first fifteen minutes. I couldn't help but wonder how in the heck they were going to fill up the rest of the show.
I was disappointed that Mangle had more than one hair. I was hoping that she would be balder, or look worse. She still looked hot, even after being ravaged by cannibals. Overall, even though she deserved a horrendous death, I thought it was poetic justice that she and Olmos killed each other then died in each others arms.
On one hand, I am always curious about the 'happily ever afters' of my favorite telenovela characters, so seeing the de la Vega family grow (but NEVER AGE) over the years was kind of fun. On the other hand I found the fast forward timeline kind of irritating because nothing substantial seemed to happen. OK, I did think the father/son scratch the butt thing was adorable, but other than that, not so enlightening.
As a viewer I wasn't convinced that the new Zorro would be completely dedicated to his role as protector of the city. He seemed a bit lethargic. I couldn't help but wonder where in the heck is Elena???? Perhaps his little sis would be a bit more passionate about carrying on the family tradition...

Great recap, Cathy.
I agree that the finale was pretty disappointing.
Mangle's disfigurement appeared to be a few scratches, no makeup and her hair messed up - a big let down. Once she killed FS, nobody was in danger from that pistol - it has to be reloaded after every shot. (Later, we see Diego and Alejandrito practicing with revolvers - I checked and they were invented in 1825 so that's possible.)When the pirate mayhem breaks out, everybody just runs out and leaves the Queen. Their first reaction should have been to protect the Queen.
Six years go by in an era when there was no reliable birth control and Esme only has the one child?
Two women who must have been 40 years old (they waited 20 years for their true loves) survive pregnancy and have healthy babies?
Ponce de Leon was looking in the wrong place - southern California, then as now, is the land of eternal youth!
Once Montero was dead, there was no need for Zorro? There weren't any other problems - landlords abusing their workers, bandits, persecution of indians, etc. that Zorro could have helped out with?
Poor Bernardo, he doesn't get anybody.
I agree that the finale was pretty disappointing.
Mangle's disfigurement appeared to be a few scratches, no makeup and her hair messed up - a big let down. Once she killed FS, nobody was in danger from that pistol - it has to be reloaded after every shot. (Later, we see Diego and Alejandrito practicing with revolvers - I checked and they were invented in 1825 so that's possible.)When the pirate mayhem breaks out, everybody just runs out and leaves the Queen. Their first reaction should have been to protect the Queen.
Six years go by in an era when there was no reliable birth control and Esme only has the one child?
Two women who must have been 40 years old (they waited 20 years for their true loves) survive pregnancy and have healthy babies?
Ponce de Leon was looking in the wrong place - southern California, then as now, is the land of eternal youth!
Once Montero was dead, there was no need for Zorro? There weren't any other problems - landlords abusing their workers, bandits, persecution of indians, etc. that Zorro could have helped out with?
Poor Bernardo, he doesn't get anybody.

Did anyone notice that when Mangle shot FS, there was no hole in his jacket and no blood. I watched it a couple of times. There's supposed to be a little charge and a bag of fake blood under the victim's clothes that makes it look like he's been shot. I thought for a second that Mangle had missed. Then FS fell down. Either the mechanism didn't work and they didn't want to reshoot it or they were too cheap to use one.

Cathy, thanks for yet another diverting recap! The recap made up for the fizzle of a final episode. Jean started the ball rolling, and I remember that you took up the challenge very quickly and did two nights (during the SCHOOL year!) for which we were all very grateful. Thanks for doing yeowoman's work here, too!
I wasn't surprised by Alfonso coming again. It just seemed to me we weren't through with him and that MP and Fernando couldn't actually end up together. I was a little surprised that when the Queen died, no one came looking for the Mayorga side of the family since she had restored them anyway. But, then, Alejandrito couldn't be Zorro if that happened and there'd be no sequel potential.
I wanted more of Tobi really showing Cat how he feels. Olmos and Mangle's ending was indeed poetic justice, I agree. It wasn't the worst we could have imagined, but if you think about it, Mangle is probably turning over in her grave at the way it came down. I wanted to see what happened to Santiago. Maybe he's going to show up in a sequel as a villain and Alejandrito/Zorro will get rid of him. Ah, well.
I loved this novela even if the end dragged a bit. It was better acted than most and had a better overall plot than most. Plus, it was more understandable than most (the lines were delivered more clearly--maybe it's characteristic of Columbian work or maybe it's the language of the period, less modern slang used). That made it enjoyable, too.
I've really appreciated all the recappers' work here. Thanks to every one of you for making this possible.
Also, thanks for all the great comments, everyone. It really has been a great "community" to be a part of (my mother would glare at that dangling part of speech). Bouquets to all the GREAT recappers. Loved all the snark and funny, pseudo-Victorian-novel titles to each recap! Well, the consensus seems to be that the final was disappointing. My company's Mexican Payroll Admin and I have been re-hashing episodios of various novelas for years now. She LOVED Zorro, as did I, but found the ending flat, the population explosion silly, and wanted more mangling of Mangle. It would have been fairly easy to really mess up her face, but no. Christian Maier remained delightful to the very end, didn't put a foot wrong for me. He's now vying with Fernando Colunga in making my heart throb.
I agree that I wanted more of Catalina and Tobi's reconciliation. They hinted at some big secret as to why he wouldn't "tocarla" but never came through with it unless I missed it.
And yes, the Zorro Junior was pretty flat and disappointing. The kid in the second Antonio Banderas Zorro movie nailed the role, being about 8 or 9, but itching to be a hero.

Alice, good thought about Hidalgo. I had forgotten about him. The story took a tiny literary liberty here and there. But it did fit in serveral ways with the general history of the time.
I found the ending pretty satisfying. Except for no Selenia reappearance. [sigh!] I thought the scene with Diego sending Tornado back out into the wild was sweet. I'm assuming that Zorro, Jr.'s horse at the end was the Son of Tornado. That was a cool arrangement.
That scene and the whole routine with Alejandro finding out Diego's Big Secret, with Diego and Esmeralda and Bernardo looking like six-year-olds who were just discovered doing something forbidden, and Alejandro making Diego sweat a bit before he told him how proud he was of him, were nice touches contributing to the Happy Ending mood.
I liked the 20-year jump because it showed us just how powerful the recuperative powers of the air and water and local crops were in Los Angeles 150 years ago. I mean, the kids grew up, but the changes in the adults over 20 years were indetectable!
Also, Mangle in a few days went from being a hideous monster with one sprig of red hair who the very sight of her would send healthy Spanish gentlemen fleeing in terror, to someone who looked like she had experienced a fall and a bad haircut. I guess unless somebody was shot or stabbed directly in the hard or rapidly devoured by man-eating fish, most everybody then just died of old age.
Nice parallel between the Diego/Esmeralda wedding and the Olmost/Mangle "wedding" outside the church.
I loved the "When Pirates Attack" scenes. Especially when Diego and Esmeralda and Alejandro are standing there on the steps staring in dismay at Mangle and Olmos while pirate fighting was going on all around them. At one point you could see a pirate stabbing someone over Alejandro's shoulder. I guess after Diego dispatched a couple dozen cannibals, they figured they could ignore the pirates unless they got too close.
And I know that Regina had forgiven Fernando from murdering her and all. But her spirit appearing to him to lead him over to the Other Side looked a lot creepier than when she visited Almudena in dreams and visions. No glowing carriage for Fernando's trip, it looks like!
It was nice to see Tobías and Catalina make up, too.
And that new Comandante doesn't look like he believes all those stories about el Zorro. Boy, he's gonna be surprised!

Jeanne, all the Spaniards are Catholic on this show, so Fernando will probably have to be purged in Purgatory for a couple of decades. Although Regina had a pretty grim look there in his vision.
Cathy, I was wondering how Mangle got away from the cannibals, too. But your theory that "her hellish personality and evil ways easily overcame the ever lethargic creepy cannibals" sounds right to me.
Shoot, even the piranhas spit Montero's remains out onto the bank. They could only stand so much of him, either. But it made for an appropriate "last meeting" between Mangle's bloody feet and what remained of Montero.
Olmos and Mangle went to their rewards with matching creepy black cloaks. An appropriate touch.

I actually discovered it when Jeanne stumbled across my own attempts at weekly summaries, which for some reason I started doing back in February at my blog.
I just posted a season-ender one with some screen shots, though the prose can't compare with the clever daily summaries we've had here:

Yes, my husband and I both saw the Onion Brothers in the bar behind Tobi. We were expecting them to have some role in the action.

Cathy, Yes, we noticed what seemed to be the Onions in the bar. Santiago *did* sign off rather than "poof" off. He told young Alejandro to tell his father good-bye for him & gave Zorro a knowing look. At least that's what I surmised from recaps & what I saw. Agreed, I would *love* to see him change his lazy ways & become Zorro II in the sequel !!! He's sassy enough, nice looking enough, & was second only to D. in fencing. If the producers of Z. would just read this blog, they could write the best sequel ever. LOL

After reading as much as I could of the comments they were a scream. I still haven't really caught up so I am going to have to watch the episodes I missed and re-watch the ending just to get everything in sync.
The ended fizzled out there but it was a fun ride. I am going to miss this one. I don't think I have ever had this much fun watching a novela.

Alice, you are so right! How could I have left off my list the ridiculous fat, white rat or guinea pig shuffling along with a big note tied to its neck that none of the guards ever noticed.

I was wondering about the Onion Brothers, too. I thought that was them in the town tavern.
They must have edited something out on Santiago and the Onion Brothers. I wonder if they might have intended that to be a longer subplot. I mean, why did the Onions stop some random guy on the road thinking it might be Santiago? How did Santiago go from being beaten senseless by them, to having overpowered them and tied them up in their next scene, to being chased by them in the wagon when he rescued Baby Zorro to the Onions being back in the tavern while Santiago wrecked his wagon but saved Baby Zorro? There had to be something cut.
Mangle escaping the cannibals off-camera, I can understand that.
I hope the DVDs are going to be reasonably priced. Or at least available through NetFlix. Maybe we'll learn the Secret of the Onion Brothers there.

I think mine was the one in which Mangle is trying to get some information from Olmos. He is in bed, with the covers pulled up, and she comes into his room in her long robe open in front and her little white nightie (or maybe it's undies) and sits on the bed displaying her long gorgeous legs while Olmos chews on the bedcovers.

I just discovered this past weekend that for NetFlix members, you can watch the original Zorro movie from 1920 online for free, and also the 1940 talkie version. I watched the 1940 version, and I'd have to say it's pretty well done.
There are two volumes of Johnston McCulley's Zorro stories that have been published, Zorro: The Master's Edition, Vols. 1 and 2. They're out of print but I'm sure they are available through inter-library loans.
