Sorry, in the moment I didn't have time to post an explanation for those of you unfamiliar, so here is a really nice balanced (I think) excerpt that describes the significance of el Grito and independencia for the Mexican People.
We in the US, like them, or they like us, were colonized under Eurpoean rule, and so both of our countries share that revolucionary pride. I, for one, salute all the visionaries who had the courage and fortitude to stand up against imposed governments and to take measures to determine their own destiny, even dying for their causes.

Albuquerque is celebrating Mexican Independence this afternoon at the National Hispanic Cultural Center on Cesar Chavez Blvd. from 5PM to 8PM.
"A celebration of Mexican independence with musical and family activities throughout the night concluding with the official “grito de dolores” by the Mexican Consul. A collaboration with the Consulado de México and Fundación Educativa Mexicana."

Shucks, Cheryl, I'd love to be in Albuquerque to see that celebration some time. I have an elderly cousin whom I adore living there, and he'd enjoy it; he grew up in Havana because his parents were stationed there. Wow. I saw an hour of the celebration on Telemundo, from Los Angeles, and it looked stupendous. It wasn't captioned but I'm getting so I understood it anyway. Neat!
Klee, I saw where you're in a hotel without Univision, geez, Louise! You mean to tell me there's no Univision in a hotel in New Mexico? ¡Qué lástima!

I know, I was expecting to have it available and was looking forward to watching it undisturbed...We do have Galavision, but I'm sure Aahndres won't be on.

Enjoy Santa Fe, it is one of my favorite places. I can visit in 45 minutes but it is soooo much cheaper to live in the Abq. area. However, Santa Fe has wonderful museums including lots of art and history on Spanish heritage as well as the pueblos (about 19 of them) and Navaho Nation which spans New Mex. and Ariz. I hear there is a new exhibit opening shortly in the Georgia O'Keefe museum. Hope you have fun.

On this day, you are supposed to eat Chiles en Nogada, which uses the red, white and green colors. It's green poblano chile, stuffed with spicy meat/fruit mixture, covered with a white sauce made with ground walnuts (nogada), and topped with red pomagranate seeds.
oh, it's really delicious. I have made it myself with a recipe from Gourmet magazine that is fairly authentic. But I did not have any pomegranate seeds.
