Pasion - Feb. 5, 2008 - Rico and Cami's secret wedding

(ed. note: new word - hambriento means hungry, starving, famished; new character - Don Laurenzo is played by Luis Courturier, AR, DA, stage play TDM with FC and Cesar Evora.)

* Sofia and Ofelia make arrangements to talk privately later. Cami asks Sofia for her help, in convincing Jorge not to take the mill from her father - it may kill him for sure. Sofia pledges her assistance.

* Paco tells Justo of Santo's arrest - Justo is impactado and asks for Ofelia. Paco explains no one is there but them and his aunts. Justo is insistent. Paco leaves to get Ines and Rita.

* Sofia and Ursula barge into the office to confront Jorge. He thinks it's about Ursula. Sofia and Ursula get after him about Santo's arrest. Sofia and Jorge argue - Jorge laughs and dares her to try and stop him. Sofia is so angry, she yells and screams and scolds him, and as he turns his back to her. She starts to hit him. Ursula tries to pull her back and make her stop. She continues to scold and hit. Jorge slaps her hard across her face. Ursula is impactado. Sofia stops and indignantly leaves the room. Ursula asks Jorge about Santo's sentence. Jorge says it will be one week in jail and then a public whipping of 20 lashes. Ursula leaves.

* Sofia sits in the raguan, crying.

* Ines and Rita talk, gossip about Santo's arrest, then Rita starts to whine and moan about her jealousy over Cami and Rico again. She goes on and on. Ines scolds Rita for continuing her jealous rants - she yells at Rita to stop, no wonder Santo is so fed up. Rita stares at her. Ines apologizes. Rita is hurt and goes inside.

* Ofelia, Rico and Cami meet in the bedroom with Justo. Justo grunts his argument to Cami for her to leave town with Rico and get married, in order to protect her from Jorge. Rico hesitates but agrees. Ofelia explains to Rico that Monte Carmelo is outside the territory and Jorge has no jurisdiction and the friar monks will cooperate with them. Cami agrees to the plan. Rico asks about the distance. Ofelia explains and then says they need two witnesses for the ceremony. Ofelia offers to go as one. Justo grunts for them to ask Sofia to go also. Cami looks at Rico, who is in his own little thought bubble.

* In the kitchen, Ofelia talks with Cami and Rico about the plans. Ofelia is worried about leaving with Santo in jail; she will go visit Sofia to ask about him as well as being witness to the ceremony. Rico agrees; he tells Cami that he will meet them at her house, to receive word from Sofia. He leaves still in his thought bubble. Ofelia and Cami wonder what's bothering him.

* Rico walks through the shop and pulls Ascanio away to walk and talk to him. Rico explains to Ascanio that he has to marry Cami right away to protect her from Jorge; Ascanio gets after him about the false name. Rico knows that but has to choice; Rico explains all his motivations as well as Jorge's determination to take the businesses away. Ascanio agrees to go along with him, but only for Cami's sake. Rico leaves. Ascanio returns to shop. Vasco asks what that was about. Ascanio lies and says about a job but he couldn't accept. Ascanio gets back to work.

* Ines and Cami are talking by the gate. Rico joins them. Ines wishes them the best. Ines watches Rico and Cami leave.

* On the street, Cami asks Rico what's bothering him. He covers by saying he has lots on his mind (investigation of the robbery, Vasco, the letter, his mystery truth he needs to tell her later). Cami assures him about the friars at Monte Carmelo will help them. As they walk through the plaza, Ofelia walks silently passed them to the mansion.

* Ursula is in her bedroom telling her maid what she wants done. Maid leaves and Fortunata, who had been listening from the side of the bed, talks to Ursula if this has to do with Vasco. Ursula is still upset with him. They discuss Sofia's interest in Justo and Santo. Tita is playing with her mom's feathers on the bed. Ursula suspects that her mother's interest is for diversion. Ursula plans on having a little fun herself. Fortunata gets after Ursula and reminds her to keep it clean, she has to continue to report to Sofia.

* In the raguan, Sofia and Ofelia talk. Ofelia asks about Santo, and Sofia tells her to have patience and everything will be resolved. Sofia asks about Justo, and Ofelia tells her he is recovering well. Ofelia tells Sofia that Rico and Cami have decided to run off to Monte Carmelo to get married in order to protect Cami from Jorge and have asked Sofia to be a witness. Sofia grumbles that she would be delighted to be a witness, to the disgust of her leech of a husband.

* In the salon, Rico and Cami tell Jimena the good news - they're getting married. Jimena is thrilled and asks to go also. Cami tells her that she can't go, they are trying to keep it a secret. Jimena suggests that she help get the dress and other items ready for the wedding. Rico tells Cami she does have a point, this is your wedding after all. Jimena leaves to get things ready. Rico and Cami sit down and talk about their love and the marriage. She only wants to know if he really loves her. He tells her he loves her with all his heart. She promises to never doubt him. They kiss. (AY!)

* In the raguan, Sofia and Ofelia continue their conversation. Sofia mentions all the illegitimate daughters Jorge has to his credit, but no sons. Sofia brings up her suspicion that Santo is Jorge's only son. Ofelia gets nervous and scared, she says her son is a good man, devout and a church-goer, she doesn't want her son anywhere near Jorge. Sofia wonders why Ofelia doesn't want Santo to relish in his inheritance as the other Lord of San Fernando. Ofelia is paranoid and desperately asks Sofia to stop pursuing this. Ursula runs in and interrupts. She smiles and tells them the good news that Santo will be released in one week. Ofelia and Sofia are happy. Then Ursula tells them the bad news, he will have to undergo 20 whippings in public.

* Ofelia arrives at Cami's house. In the salon, she tells Cami, Jimena and Rico that Sofia has agreed to be the second witness, and will arrive here later tonight in the coach. Cami turns to Rico and reminds him about the papers. He says he will go to his hacienda for them and will join them over there. Ofelia also tells them that Santo will be released in a week, also he will have to receive 20 whippings in public.

* Rico returns to the hacienda - he shouts several orders to Jesus and Pablo outside.

* In the salon, Rico tells Mario about having to marry Cami tonight and his reservations about doing so with his fake name. Mario teases him about sleeping with Cami. Rico gets after him about always thinking about whores; don't you want to settle down with a decent wife? Rico asks about Mario's past. Mario finally fills his buddy in on part of his past - apparently he fell for a high society lady, who made a fool of him. She convinced him to sneak into jail, and kill many many guards to help the lady's brother escape; Mario's dad discovered this and ordered Mario to disappear. Rico asks Mario what happened to the lady. Mario discovered the lady hooked up with another man, so Mario killed both of them right there. Rico says not all ladies and society families are like that. Mario laughs and isn't interested in continuing the conversation. Rico asks Mario to go with him tonight. Mario taps his buddy on the shoulder and leaves. Rico sighs and holds his hand on his face. Lis wanders in - she hasn't seen much of him lately and wants to talk. She asks if he signed the marriage contract yet. Rico lies and says he can't do it now, because Justo had a stroke and Santo's been arrested. Lis is shocked and asks about Santo - Rico tries to end the talk with "I'm busy now and can't talk". Lis continues to badger with her questions about his stolen money. Rico continues to say he's busy and walks to the hallway. Lis follows. Servant tells Rico that the coach is ready outside the gate. Lis is stunned and asks what coach? Rico says not now, Lis, I'm busy, we'll talk tomorrow. Lis is left baffled and bewildered in the hallway as Rico closes the door to his room.

* In his bedroom, Rico stuffs the papers into his vest. He takes out his little chest and finds his mother's wedding ring - the special perfect ring to give Cami at their wedding. He stares at it and smiles.

* In the hallway, Lis pushes Fran to look out the window and tell her what's happening outside. Rico, Mario, Pablo and Jesus leave on horses to the street. Fran tells her they left the yard and are escorting what looks to be one of the Mancera coaches. Lis is curious.

* On the road, inside the coach, Sofia asks Cami about her first marriage - Cami tells her and Ofelia about her marriage to Tim and the ceremony. Cami tells them she blames herself for Santo's arrest. Sofia and Ofelia assure her otherwise.

* Vasco and Ascanio sit quietly at the table, while Rita vents her hostility and continuous jealousy over Cami leading the privileged life. Ines is fed up and scolds her for it, finally tells her to stop. When Rita finally shuts up, Ines escorts her inside to go to sleep. Ascanio and Vasco go to the front gate and discuss where to find Bernie. Vasco doesn't know where he went. Ascanio says think, it's important. Vasco mentions family, friends, the capitol and another location. Ascanio warns Vasco of the danger of Bernie trying to use the letter to extort more money or worse, actually giving it to Lis. He tells Vasco this could ruin Cami's life; besides Jorge already is determined to take the businesses away from Justo. Vasco is impactado by this last news brief.

* The group arrive outside Monte Carmelo monastery. They knock on the door. A friar answers and speaks with Sofia. Sofia, Ofelia, Rico and Cami meet with Don Laurenzo in the rectory office. Don Laurenzo discusses first with Sofia and Ofelia the urgent reason for the nighttime nuptials for Cami and Rico. Cami and Rico pledge that they are serious about going through with the marriage and are honest. When Don Laurenzo is satisfied, they follow him to the chapel where the quick ceremony takes place - they exchange vows, Rico says "I accept" then Cami says "I accept"; Rico slips the ring on Cami's finger; Don Laurenzo declares them husband and wife and blesses them. As they follow Don Laurenzo to the next room, Rico and Cami again declare their eternal love for one another and share a kiss. (AW!) In the room, at the table, Don Laurenzo hands Rico the feather pen. Rico hesitates for a moment and then signs the registration book. Rico hands the pen to Cami, who signs the book. Then Don Laurenzo asks Ofelia and Sofia to sign the book. Don Laurenzo takes the book away and says he will return in a minute. Sofia wants to have a big shindig to celebrate. Cami says they can't, Justo's recovering and Santo's in jail. Rico and Ofelia suggest a small family dinner instead. Cami agrees. Sofia mentions they will postpone Vasco and Ines' wedding until Santo is released. Sofia remarks on the beautiful wedding ring. Don Laurenzo returns to tell them their marriage is now official. Rico thanks Don Laurenzo.

* In the coach, Rico and Cami climb out in front of Cami's house. Sofia and Ofelia congratulate the couple, and promise to tell Justo. The coach leaves. Mario asks Rico if they are planning on going to the hacienda tonight. Rico says no they'll stay here. Mario and crew give Rico and Cami a "seaman's sword salute" and ride away. Rico kisses Cami; Cami gives him the keys; he holds the door open and sneaks in a kiss as she enters. He closes the door behind him.

* In the courtyard, Cami suspects that Jimena has left. They are all alone and hug passionately. Then they kiss and he picks her up in his arms and carries her inside. (AW! HOW SWEET!)

* They enter the bedroom, and find Jimena's surprise for them. The room is filled with lots and lots of bouquets of roses. Rico takes off his coat and pours the champagne. He toasts there happiness. He tells her that although the wedding was rushed, small and in secret, he pledges that they will always be together in love and happiness, and they will have lots and lots of children. Cami starts to cry - Rico says no tears - she says they are tears of happiness. They kiss and he starts to undress her. She asks what he loves about her - he loves her character, her strength, her ability to be strong in the toughest of situations. He takes off her necklace. She giggles about her fears and nerves, and asks if he's nervous or scared. He says "soy hambriento (starving), ahora soy muy hambriento (hungry)." They kiss and he picks her up and lays her on the bed. He kisses her and she unbuttons his shirt. He tells her she's so beautiful. They undress each other and make love. (AY-AY-AY!) Rico says, "I love you, my life, I love you. Cami replies, "I love you too."

Well, there's your love scene, girls. -g-

I don't know if there's anything Sofia could have done to put a bigger twist in Jorge's knickers. Can't you just see the way she's going to smile at him? He finally pushed her too far!

I'm still wondering if Mario's explanation to Ricardo concerning his past is true. Mario is too protective, too loyal and is often counseling Ricardo, so, could they be brothers? Could Mario be Ricardo's father (can't remember his name) bastard child and was never recognized?
Wondering in Arizona.....

LOL at least we got some foreplay this time. Loved how Sophia was all for sticking it to horny Jorge. Glad we got to hear some of Mario's past. I suspect there's more he didn't tell. Too bad the marriage won't be valid since Ric used a fake name but the wedding and the honeymoon was very romantic.

Excellent recap, thank you. I'm a little bothered by the named assumed by Rico, too. Not that I think using an alias will invalidate the marriage. It's the fact that LaFont went to Mariana to ask the Bishop(?), Ric's godfather, if Ric is the genuine article. I know Ric has had extensive conversations with his padrino and that the padrino knows he's been a pirate. But, I don't remember if Ric told him about the name change. So, if he didn't, and LaFont asks the Bishop about Ric with a different name, what will happen then?

Anyway, at last the good guys are dancing the two-step around Jorge. I just don't think he's going to be outdone by anyone. It's just too early in this game to have a knock-down, drag out swordfight or something like that.

Also - forgot to say this yesterday. Cheryl New Mex, welcome back. I missed your wit. Where did you go?

From lower Ala

I think Ricardo's godfather, Don Gaspar, is a cardinal (all that red!). And he should recognize the assumed name - he wrote a letter of introduction for him using that name.

And I'm anticipating Jorge's final downfall - he's going to pay and he's going to pay big time!

Toddson

Toddson: Thanks for the info. That's a relief.

Also, I think Mario's story was very compelling, but, I don't think he's given all of it up yet.

Thanks for the super recap so rapidly delivered. I am so hoping that Mario will be related in some durable way to Ricardo, like Wondering in Arizona suggests. They are such soul mates. Ric doesn't have other trustworthy buds like him among his scurvy set of piratebuds. Even if no blood exists to tie them, they seem like lifelong friends for sure.

It was such fun to see Sofia deftly stick it to Jorge. He really has to get a scorpion pie down the road for smacking her like he did. Now that I think of her as "my new friend, Mariana," teehee, I am seeing her blazing blue eyes and subtle expressions with a greater understanding of her acting skills. She has a keen sense of humor too, so I bet she had great fun with these scenes.

And oh my, the sweet love scene laid carefully by Jimena with roses, candles and champagne so perfectly bubbly. I wish I had set the recorder so I could play the ensuing scene several times (a day). Ahhh, Fernando does such wonderful renderings as the subtle, passionate lover.

Pasofino, thanks for the warm welcome back, I missed you all too. I was in Cuernavaca at Universidad Internacional's Spanish School for 4 weeks with time in Mexico City (DF) both before and after to indulge my passion for museums, pyramid/temples and iglesias. So the last day was so perfect, I started in the north of DF at the Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe then ended in the South in San Angel at Caray Caray with MK. It was a unique two-shrine day for sure!

I'm confused about Mario and his story. I understood that he came from a family of "high society." Because I understood Ric to ask him if that were the case, why doesn't he know how to read or write, and Mario replied that he wasn't interested. Any clarification?

I liked the fact that although Ric was happy at the wedding, we also saw his concern/guilt about the false name. Fernando was playing several different actions during the scene. Also it was ironic that he gave Camila his mother's ring, as she was the one who extracted a death bed promise from Ric to get Tim's money away from Camila.

Thanks for the recap this morning. Last night's episode was interrupted over and over ... what with Super Martes and all... distractions... :)

The interruptions explain my confusion, I thought that Mario was talking about his own experience rather than that of his father's. Didn't he sneak into the prison to kill the guards, or was it dad? And what up with his tears? Was that for the dead dad, or the life he lost? Maybe a subtitle... Even Pirate Mario Cries.... I thought that he ran off to find the woman and then killed her and her new guy. Was that dad's woman or his? It seems more evil for it to have been dad's... mas confusion.

I also thought that Ric referred to himself as a lobo hambriente (starving wolf), a wonderfully colorful phrase. But, that was about it-- I was unimpresssed with the Pasion. maybe it was me, the election night, he's hawt; they're not. I am jes saying.

VV

In re Mario - my understanding was that it was Mario's story; he was from a good family, but wasting his opportunities (kind of like Vasco, only from a higher level of society), fell in love with a woman from his circle, her brother was in jail (for fraud?), at her request he broke into the jail, killed some guards, freed her brother. His father, who ran the prison, told him to disappear. When he went to the woman, he found her with someone else and killed them both.

And Ricardo's mention of a wolf - if I understood correctly, at one point he said (referring to his relationship with Camila, I think) that he was a sheep in a wolf's skin.

Now ... for those whose understanding of Spanish and its idioms is better than mine, there are several words used to refer to babies and I don't get the differences. I've heard "criatura" and "varon" (which seems to refer specifically to boy babies). What's the differences.

Toddson

Can a recapper please move this to the sidebar/delicious? Thank you.

Am I being a big baby for always requesting this? Is there a reason that lately it often hasn't been posted to the sidebar (four times in two weeks, I think)? Is posting to the sidebar unnecessary in the larger scheme of things?

My problem is, if its not on the sidebar, I can't find it down-the-road. It's buried somewhere in the daily additions to the main page. Unless there is an address I should be using instead...? Am I doing this all wrong? I'm not carping, honest. So if I'm missing something, please enlighten me.

Toddson, I believe you are correct. I understood Mario's story to be that he was from a good family and it was HE HIMSELF who fell for a woman who he broke out of jail, then found her in bed with someone else and killed her and the other guy. That was what I heard and my native Spanish speaking wife confirmed this when I asked her. So the deal is that Mario himself was burned by love, that's why he gives Ric such a hard time about it and why he hasn't put more moves on Jimena by now, I would guess.

I've done the tagging, Polly.

My understanding also was that the brother of the woman Mario loved was in jail for fraud and Mario broke him out of jail (killing several guards in the process) as a favor to her. Before fleeing as his father told him, he went to look for her. Finding her with her lover, he killed them both.

Now that we've gotten Cami and Ric's passionate love scene out of the way, when are they going to give my gorgeous Ascanio some romancin' to do?

Jestena that makes sense that he broke her brother out, not her, I only confirmed that it was Mario's story and not his father with my wife, I didn't ask about that. Does anyone still have that episode recorded and can watch it again with captions so we can nail this down? though I suspect in the long run the details aren't that important, but I know how we all like to know everything.

thank you NinaK for tagging this to delicious. I appreciate the helpful assistance.

thank you Toddson and everyone for helping clarify Mario's story.

Bienvenidos de vuelta a la tierra de la ingles, Cheryl. I spoke with cap'n jenny cash/schoolmarm last night and she told me about your trip, and your meeting MK in person. Que suertana tu eres!

J.R. :)

Jestina, thats what I understood Mario's story was.
I also thought Ricardo was responding to Camilla's confession that she had been afraid of him. Such gentle loving sweetness between them. I cringed each time Ricardo's face was hidden from Cami and saw his dread that she would have to know one day.
What an actor! He uses 2 or 3 seconds revealing his internal conflict.
And thus the Director does not have to bore me with third party conversations about how he was feeling. Or worse, several charactors speaking for days about so-and-so's feelings.
What a best friend Jimena is. Now of course my main man Mario will need a little civilizing but I could see him and Jimena going over for dinner with the --- what's Ricardo and Camilla's name? ?-)

During the talk with Fray Laurenzo (do I have that right?) at Mount Carmelo, he said something about the church being against Jorge taking his "rights". So ... if he's making a practice of claiming these "rights" to the point of abuse, can't the church do something about it? I was reminded during church this morning (it's Ash Wednesday) that in the past the church has been able to refuse sacraments to anyone who is openly and "notoriously" (to quote the Episcopalian service) going against church teachings. THAT might get him to behave better.

Also, this might be a test of Sofia and how much she wants to hurt Jorge. Does she spill the beans about Santiago being his son? or does she wait until after he's been publicly flogged and then, if Ofelia hasn't told him, let him know. The punishment is pretty severe - any time a person (even our big strong blacksmith) was whipped like that there was a danger of him being permanently disabled (Jorge's already responsible for him walking with a limp - we don't want things to get worse for him!).

Toddson

I'm a little confused about what Cami doesn't know. Is it just Ric's other full name? Why would that be such a big deal to her since she already knows his other name (Antillano) and the fact that he was a pirate. Does it all boil down to an illegal wedding?

J.R. - Thank you for the fabulous racap! I can assure you that even though I did not watch the episode, your description of the loving scene is so alive that I could definitely feel their pasion.

Jimena 's surprise was sooo sweet. I also found the name of "Monte Carmelo" very sweet.

I don 't know who is more annoying. Vasco, Liz, Grita, Whore-hey or someone else? IMO, it depends on the episode. Sometimes I find Vasco intolerable, most of the times I dislike Liz and Grita. For instance, in this episode Grita got on my nerves. Thankfully, I always know the characters that I love.

Cheryl welcome back!

...Just thinking...If Santi becomes the lord of San Fran, doesn't gRita become the lady? And seeing last night how she even envyies her sister coming into money, I'm thinking that gRita coming into money and power will be a threat like WhorJe; using power to bring harm to Camilla.

I don't see Lis as a bad or dangerous person. I see her as very focused on her goal, get Ricardo. But she hasn't done anything to harm him, hasn't threatened to betray him, hasn't agreed with her aunt to believe that Ricardo will kick them to the curb when he marries. She truly loves and trusts Ricardo and defends him.
I would not like her to get into the hands of that mysogonist, slimey Boufant. She could be intimidated into betraying Ricardo just as Manuela does what she is told in the hopes of avoiding a backhand slap.
And Autie-dearest would be the first to go running from the room while Slimey slaps the blind helpless victim.

I think Camila knows it's a false name, but he still had to use it for the wedding in case he has to show the marriage document to anyone. Also, since Salamanca is a wanted man, he can't risk having that name in the church's records.

The marriage is valid in the eyes of the church, but it might not be valid in the eyes of the law. However, when Ric gets his pardon, I think everything will be OK.

And can I just say what a refreshing change it is not to have to wait till the very last episode for our couple to get married??

And how refreshing that the main couple doesn't keep breaking up every week over some misinterpretation of some random comment by some random person, like Three's Company? Whoever wrote this show, I want to see stuff that they write going forward, since they don't fall into all the old cliches. Just thinking back to Duelo and Heridas now makes me feel almost sick after seeing something with quality like this.

So true Julie! (re: not wait till the end for a wedding.)
When it actually came off I said and it's not even a Friday!
I'm loving the pace of the story.

Polly aka Paula - I don't know which browser you use, but if you have Firefox, you can add something called a Live Bookmark. A Live Bookmark lists all the recent post titles in reverse chronological order, so that you can quickly find any recap that was posted within the last few days. (I don't think IE lets you use live bookmarks, but I could be wrong.)

All of the recaps do get added to delicious eventually, but it's not automatic and therefore it might not be as prompt as you would like. And sometimes delicious gets a little flaky, we add something to it but it doesn't stick right away. Since recent recaps are always on the main page, the delicious links are more for convenience in finding older recaps.

Before I knew about live bookmarks and RSS feeds, I simply searched the main page for the novela title or a character's name. Takes about three seconds.

Chris, I rewound it and that's what was said, but you're right, what matters is that Mario was burned by a so-called society woman and that's why he's cynical and prefers to deal with rameras. And also why he says that love makes a man weak. So when is he going to admit to himself that he has feelings for our girl Jimena?

Capt. Bonney Morgan, I love watching the many tight friendships on this show: Mario & Ric, Jimena & Cami, Ascanio & Cami, and Sofia & Justo. Ascanio has made it clear to Ric & Mario that his loyalty is to Cami and not them.

Is it likely that Cami would have refused to marry Ric had she known about his fake name. Even if the marriage is technically inalid, she's still under his protection unless someone evil finds out. Oh, who am I kidding? This is novela land. Somebody evil has to find out.

I've warmed up to Vasco. I believe he's sorry for what he's done and is developing some character. Plus he's such a loving dad to Paco. If anyone saw Amor Real, there was a similar character development with Humberto, the formely n'er do well son.

Jestina said:So when is he going to admit to himself that he has feelings for our girl Jimena?
I thought M.M.M Mario was indicating that when Jimena fussed at him tugged his beard and he stepped into the fountain and poured water on his head. He is so funny, so cute.

A small nit to pick. A better translation of the "azotes" Santiago will be sentenced to would be 20 lashes. 20 public whippings sounds like they'd bring him out 20 different times and whale away!

Wedding night scene was pretty well done, although I wanted Fer's shirt off! And IMO Susana still just can't act lust! My all-time favorite lovemaking scene with Fer (which I replayed over and over AND over) was in Amor Real when he sees Mathilde (Adela) getting out of the bathtub, wraps her in a towel and carries her off to bed. Ay!

True, Susana can't act lust. And we may be a bit premature in thinking that Ric and Cami live happily ever after, despite some hardships along the way of course. I think this marriage (at least this time with illegal name) is doomed.

Like Camilla, I'm just going to be happy...until the bomb drops...either Paco or Lis and Auntie-Dearest.

Cheryl New Mex:
I am very interested in hearing more about the Spanish language school. I looked at their web site, and the rates seem reasonable. Did you think it was worthwhile? What kind of accommodations do they offer?

That Paco ... he's going to kill his grandfather yet! first he drops the news that he found the unburned letter and gave it to Vasco, and Justo has his stroke. Then the poor man's in bed, half-paralyzed, and the kid tells him that Uncle Santiago's been hauled off to jail.

But Vasco seems to have repented and turned over a new leaf ... we'll see if it lasts, but I have hopes for him.

And Ricardo needs to take his shirt off! the man obviously spends time getting those lovely muscles - why won't he show them off?

Toddson

Great show! As always, thanks for the recaps. Lots of details which always adds to the story.

Novelera: I'm with you--take the damn shirt off already! Why the tease? My TV was steaming & then BAM! the show was over. C'mon...give a girl a thrill every now & then. He is just SO fine.

Sophia is terrific. She'll get even with Whorny Whoreje one way or the other. Brains vs. beast always wins.

Love Mario! Now that man knows how to cry. Just a single tear, no blubbering or histrionics...just a touch of tenderness slipping out of a rough package. Jimena better take care of him!

Oh...anyone else sick of the theme song? My son wanted to know if every marital consummation had a theme song...LOL!

M from CT

I like the main theme song, but I hated the Ric/Camila love song the first time I heard it, I have referred to it as the "Disney love theme" because that's what it sounds like to me.

I think they're the same song. Doesn't it start off with that Disney princess thing (I wonder if Sarah Brightman has done actual Disney princess songs), and then go into the part that we hear in the opening credits?

oh my god you're right - I went and found the video on youtube to see and it's true. It starts out all Disney and then gets to the part they play during the credits after a minute or so. Then I guess I hate/like the same song, just different parts of it.
I don't see any Disney in her imdb.com entry, but she should, I think Disney every time we hear the "Suenas..."

Thank you , JR, for the recap of another action-packed episode. That was a quickie wedding. I am wondering if it will be valid since Ric used a false name. Anyhoo, I agree with Novelera about the hottest love scene being the bath scene in Amor Real. Alborada was my first telenovela , and I thought that the love scenes between Fernando and Lucero were hot, but I ordered Amor Real on ebay and was amazed at the MANY hot love scenes and the chemistry between Fernando and Adela. That telenovela was really big on bath scenes....everyone was squeky clean in that show. However, that being said, this love scene was more satisfactory than the first one which was very abrupt and came out of nowhere..they're in the salon..then...whizz bang...they're in bed. I agree with those who said that Susana is not doing her fair share in bringing the heat..it takes two to tango. Fernando was trying to hold up his end of the deal. Well, practice makes perfect, so maybe things will improve. Maybe Susana will get into the flow and the chemistry will improve. And, I think that Sofia will tell Jorge about Santiago to save him from the public whipping. Uh-oh, my TV guide lists futbol tonight instead of Pasion...que lastima.

My guess is the Ric/Camilla marriage will probably be doomed for now or otherwise compromised. It's too early in the novela.

I love M from CT's comment about her son asking if every marital consummation has a theme song! The duet part of theme song gets on my nerves, but I'm starting to like the guy's part and his voice.

I personally liked the tenderness of the wedding night scene, although I did keep waiting for Cami to get Ric's shirt off! However, I think it is too soon to be comparing love scenes to other shows or to assume that Susana can't do lust. They seem to be showing Cami more confortable with time.

The whole name tied to being legally married thing has always confused me. You should be marrying the person, not the name. So, does anyone know for sure--the marriage is valid in the church but not civilly? When Ric gets his name back (we all know he will at the end), can he retroactively fix the legality of the marriage?

Toddson and M~~~Have you seen Alborada ? If you want to see Fernando without his shirt, that's the show you've got to see. In fact, his character Luis is shot in the side and so we get to see him in bed without his shirt for SEVERAL episodes followed by a scene where he is undressing to get ready for a wedding. HELlo !!!! M~~~You have a very funny son !!!...marital consummation set to music...I love it !!!! Maybe we should all pick our own theme song !!!!~~~Mad Bess, going off to think about her theme song

Thank you so much for the recap!

My spanish if finally getting better and I pretty well had it down that Mario was in love at some point with a wealthy girl but I thought it was her father (not Mario's) that he was referring to.

Finally, we have liftoff (so to speak) of a wonderful love scene and all that pre-scene buildup.

I actually found some VERY interesting You Tube scenes of Pasion that are pretty steamy. I did a google search of "Ricardo y Camilla Pasion You Tube". This should take you to the page to get to You Tube. Once you view a scene there are more to view in the side bar. One scene in particular I would be very surprised to see aired here in the States. :)

WARNING: Some of these scenes have not yet aired.

*Susan*

I guess Ursula (Whoresula) hasn't caught sight of Ascanio o o o yet. He looked mighty fine when he was walking away in his white blousy shirt, nice fitting tan pants and with his cute little ponytail (no mullet or dirty hair here.) He certainly has caught my attention.

Several people have commented on Camila's hairstyle change. This change happened immediately after her first noche de amor with Ric. Coincidence???...I think not.

I'm thinking that can't be all of the boda night. If they don;t continue the scene on Thursday, then I think the censors have robbed us of some hot scenes. Thank goodness for You Tube for uncensored versions.

The Pasión theme song (which will now make me laugh every time about consummation theme songs) was Fernando Lima's debut recording. Sarah's new CD came out mid January, but Fernando Lima's very first solo CD came out February 5 (hey, like yesterday) I looked for it in Mexico, DF on Saturday but they did not have it yet (now I know why). FL's album is called Pasión and I just ordered it on Amazon. Both Sarah's and Fer's individual albums have the duet included. Just incase you wanted to know. And Ferro, I don't know if you could make a copy of the song and erase the parts you don't like. That would be interesting to try.

NinaK, I went back to Uninter for the 3rd time in 3 years and already have plans to return in 2009 in January. I think it is wonderful and it is now a sub site for the Cervantes Institute and has qualified to administer CI's DELE for beginner level for sure and perhaps the intermediate level. The DELE is really the gold standard in Spanish fluency testing as far as I know. I like staying with a family to keep the immersion going. We can sidebar on e-mail if you want more info. I am cherylnewmex@gmail.com.

But back to the really important stuff: Didn't we learn during Alborada that Fernando Colunga works out about two hours every day to keep that fine physique always ready for prime time. I would like to have seen the shirt ripped off of him myself but maybe that's just me or perhaps you too SusanLynn?

Howdy =)

The whole shirt thing was very frustrating. It seemed as though they kept trying to take it off and it just wasn't cooperating. Maybe when it's over and they go in Cristina (I think it's become a tradition for folks to appear on her show after a telenovela ends) they will show this on the blooper reel and mention how it kept getting stuck on something.

Someone asked about "criatura" and "varon." Technically, criatura means "creature," but it can also mean child or baby, and it can also mean human being, as in "una hermosa criatura" - a beautiful creature or a beautiful being or just plain someone really hot! I guess technically "creature" means all those same things - "what an adorable little creature" - referring to a child. "Varon" in the terms used here refers to a male, usually a human male. It can refer to a baby's gender, or just a "male specimen." It is the more refined version of "macho" which can mean any male from humans to animals to flower pistils and pollen. On a totally different note, "Varon" with a capital V can mean "Baron," the title of nobility. Go figure.

As for the question on the friar, I believe the spelling is "Lorenzo." I don't think the church necessarily had much power over what the government did. Especially at the level of a simple monastery friar with a little mission. However, I suppose he could try to send the chisme to someone higher up and they could pass it on to the royals that this guy was making them look bad. The church was certainly still strong in those days.

Re: Al going to look for Gaspar, it was indeed to see if the letters that Ric presented were legit, Gaspar's standing in the church was never questioned. I seem to recall that Ric told his padrino that he goes by "Lopez de Carvajal," but maybe Gaspar will forget.

The thing that Camila doesn't know is that Ric is indeed a real pirate (he made up the story of being a spy for the crown) and that he is Lis' cousin (this might make Cami wonder if he was after her money). I do think she'd probably be kosher once he told her the truth, but he's worried (big surprise). I don't know whether or not the marriage would be legit in the eyes of the church after he signed a fake name. There was (and is) such a thing as proxy wedding where a person could stand for another, as long as their actual names were used, but there is also the issue of marrying the soul as opposed to the name, so I don't know what the church would say. In the eyes of the state however, I think they'd have a hard time with that one.

J. R., thanks for the great recap! I missed the epi because the so-called full-service hotel where I stayed doesn’t have Univision. Drat, will have to watch extra episodes of Pasion and Juan when I get home. That is if I get home, given the nasty weather. This morning I left the hotel and had no brakes, rolling part way into the street just off the hotel parking lot. Seemed like that when snow got blown under the car, it messed with the brakes like rain would! Who knew? Or maybe it was just that nothing got cleared. Then I went 15 miles on the interstate at 40 mph and few people were passing, most were that slow. Makes me think lovingly of Hawaii.

Good for Cami for going straight to Sofia. That was her best chance.

“she yells at Rita to stop, no wonder Santo is so fed up. Rita stares at her. Ines apologizes.” Bad move, Ines. gRita does NOT deserve an apology.

Jeanne

Just in case anyone doesn't already know, there's no episode tonight because of the soccer game.

I was the one who asked about "criatura" as opposed to "varon". Thanks for the answer!

Rita's probably going to die - in childbirth, perhaps, but she's gone too wacky to keep around.

And Ursula hasn't noticed Ascanio - he's clean, fully dressed, his hair's always neat. For "entertainment" she seems to go for what we'd call blue-collar types ... if they had collars!

I was happy for Ric and Cami to get married, but even happier to hear Mario's story and see that lone tear slide down his cheek.
Given the pattern of tnvla obstacles, you know there will be some type of problem with Ric and Cami, leading to physical or emotional separation. And then, a reunion and maybe another legally binding marriage. Just guessing, but it can't be smooth sailing with so many anvils hanging above.
LaPaloma

Note to Ursala: Ascanio o o o has some lovely muscles to ogle under that shirt and an added bonus is, he's not related to you.

Muchas gracias J.R.!

Did I miss it or has Cami never actually said I love you to Ric? I keep hearing her say "Yo tambien".

Regarding Susanlynn's comment about Cami's new hairstyle, the traditional hairstyle change of a female character to accompany her change in *status* has been one of my favorite features of novelas!

On another topic, Rita seems doomed as a character, but maybe she will die under semi-suspicious circumstances. Then they will be hard pressed to find anyone who would not be relieved to have her out of the picture.

Anon 7:01 "Note to Ursala: Ascanio o o o has some lovely muscles to ogle under that shirt and an added bonus is, he's not related to you." ROTFL! Ursula might not care. She was, after all, inclined to marry Alvaro who was into EVERYTHING. 'Course, I can't remember if she actually knew that Al was into everything. Jorge didn't care about giving his daughter to someone who was into everything.

Jeanne

Maybe Rita will die and Lis will find a way to blame Cami, or Jorge will blame her. That would create problems.

Jeanne

Boo hoo! No novela tonight!

I also agree about Ric's shirt not being ripped off! What's with Cami...Everyone else has gone around shirtless except Ric...and then it was so dark I was squinting!!! Sheeesh!

Wonder how Mario looks without a shirt......

Susanlynn, you are too funny about theme music!

I think that if Camila finds out that Ricardo is the nephew of her former husband and Aunt Fran, and cousin to Lis, it might produce a crisis of belief (or she could be manipulated into believing) that Ric has married her to get the family money back. Also, given her experience with the other pirates, I don't think she'd be thrilled to find out that Ric is REALLY a pirate and has done it for the money. I dont think either of the above will in the end affect their marriage, but it will add the necessary agita. (By the way, Fernando is great at playing heroes with problems).

Sarah Brightman was married to Andrew Lloyd Weber and played many of the original roles in his musicals. I don't think she's ever done any Disney. NJSUE

About Cami's hair change. Her dress style changed at the same time. She now wears dresses less like an aristocrat and more like Ofelia's.

About the church's power, the abbey is out of Jorge's jurisdiction. There must be a church in San Fernando.

The church was always the balance of power to the throne. The throne, and those it appoints, had the power of life and death. But the church, in that system, had the power of heaven and hell through the threat of excommunication - if mass is a requirement for salvation, and you're locked out of mass, guess what?

And DJ's activities would certainly come onto the radar of the church by now; the question is whether the region's bishop has the will and strength to do anything. It sounds like that piece is not in play, in this chess game.

As far as Cami acting hot, I don't think that women put themselves into the sex act in the olden days. They were what todays women would call "frigid". It wasn't unusual even in my grandma's day for only the man to make the moves and sounds. Just think how we bad mouth women who seem to enjoy sex. We tag them whores and want them dead. Cami's not the hot type. Get over it.

PASION the best telenovela on at the moment! Thanks for the recap!!!!

MARGARET! Since there's no show tonight, can I go slightly OT? On the 1/31 cap, you said you studied Economic History. Can I ask you something?

The medieval patron system (actually from Helenistic times), where you economically supported those above you, and provided protection and favors to those below you. I saw it as a VERY strong theme in Fea (who was loyal to whom, who protected whom, who shifted their support from one patron to a different patron). It permeated the series. I don't see it in Pasion much (other than family relationships), and I haven't watched other novelas yet. Is it a strong theme in other novelas? And is that because the attitude still persists in Latin American countries? I know it's not formalized like it was in feudal times, but at least in Fea, it seemed to be a driving force in most human interactions. Is is still a strong force in society?

Any light appreciated.

With no Pasion on last night, I started watching my newly arrived Netflix DVD of "Ladron que Roba a Ladron" (con Fernando Colunga, of course). It's really fun.

Also, in the trailers was "I love Miami" with my favorite heartthrob Jaime Camil (tan divino!).

Someone asked if Cami had ever told Rick that she loved him (see below). Reread the last sentence of the recap and it is spelled out very clearly that she has. On the other hand, even if she has only said "yo tambien", that means she loves him.
"Did I miss it or has Cami never actually said I love you to Ric? I keep hearing her say "Yo tambien".

I think I've missed something pertinent to the "storyline." If Cami doesn't know that Fran and Lis are Ric's aunt and cousin, then what reason has been given for them living in the casa de Ric? Cami obviously knows them already from her Timiteo days.

Camilla and Jimena discussed who Ricardo really was many episodes ago. Camilla was the one that said "He not only looks like Antillano, he IS Antillano. What they don't know is that he is Timeteo's nephew. He and Lis and Tia dearest have the tale out that he is just 'a friend of the family'.
Oh yes...I hate the theme song of the show and didn't realize there was a lovers theme. I was disappointed that they decided the song was so popular that they would feature the singers as a sidebar. I have trained myself to ignore it.
I enjoyed the theme song of Alborada so very because of the voice of Placido Domingo. But then again I love opera. I loved all the music in Alborada! Some telenovelas remind me of grand scale, intricate stories in operas.

I was also surprised and confused by the insinuation that Cami might not know that Lis is Rick's cousin. So, when Cami gave them part of her inheritance, I guess it was only because she knew that Lis was Tim's daughter. She knew that the man in the picture that Tim kept stabbing was related to Liz, but I guess she didn't know that it was she actually Rick's dad who was being stabbed. So, I guess that's a subplot that will develop into an obstacle. It obviously means more than what meets the eye.

Mad Bess: OK, I Youtubed Alborada...muchas gracias! Would it be too trampy of me to get a hold of the DVD & fast forward to all of the hot love scenes with Fernando in it? I wonder if they could issue a special release version with chapters just for shirtless Fernando sightings.

(bad...I know...& it's only the second day of Lent)

M from CT :-)

On the subject of Novelas on DVD - I never saw Amor Real but am hesitant to watch it on DVD because it has been so shortened. Has anyone seen the DVD version and does it hold up in the shortened version? Thanks in advance. Same with Alborada - I saw it when it aired but since I understand Spanish so much better now I wouldn't mind rewatching it - does the shortened version take away from how good it was the original way?

Ferro~~~For Christmas 2006, hub bought me the shortened DVD with English subtitles and the full novela of Alborada. The shortened version had all the main plots of the original. I watch both the original and the condensed. Likewise with Amor Real for my last birthday....bothe the full version and the shortened with English subtitles is great.

Susanlynn - your endorsement is good enough for me, thanks!

Mad Bess, you chose to get the condensed when you already have the complete. Was it to get the maximum impact? For the subtitles? Reproduction quality? Something else?

I have Fea complete and I'm going to get the condensed, but I haven't clarified for myself why. So I'd love to hear your angle on why, and how you use the two versions. Thanks!

Is there someplace I can buy the complete version? I didn't know they did that -

I just ordered Amor Real and Alborada in the shortened version without knowing that full versions were available. I would much prefer the full version, with or without subtitles so I would also appreciate knowing how to obtain them.

I don't think any novela could surpass Amor Real in my estimation, though Alborada was a close second, and I'd love to have both in my collection uncut.

Reason to get the condensed: Because it is a legal and licensed copy. That way the artists get paid for their work.

I totally understand why people buy the longer versions, and I'm not criticizing or judging at all. I'm just saying that "paying the artists for their work" seems like a great justification to me. It also encourages the studios to keep releasing DVD sets.

As long as their own sales keep up, the studios have less reason to prosecute people who sell not-completely-legal copies. If people stopped buying the licensed DVD sets, I think the studios would get very grumpy about the unlicensed ones.

Ferro, Mad Polly, and Jestena~~~~I got the shortened DVD because they've got English subtitles [I don't understand much of the dialogue. However, I'm improving and sometimes understand complete conversations. ] They also have bloopers and other extra footage [specials on the telenovela, interviews, etc]--I got them online [from Target, I think] for about $20.00 , but later I think that I saw them at our Blockbuster. These DVDs are good , but only the major scenes are included so lots of great stuff is left out and I wanted to see these shows [and Fernandito in todo. Hub ordered the complete versions through Ebay. I think that Alborada came from Spain and Amor Real was from California. These full sets cost about $100.00, but I considered them well worth the price because I had never seen Amor Real and only caught the last half of Alborada when it was shown on TV...That was my maiden voyage into Telenovelaland. -The quailty was pretty good except for one or two discs.

The site is www.te-lenovelas.com . Here is the link for Amor Real. It costs $65 plus shipping.

They do not have any subtitles, English nor Spanish. I've been pleased with the products and service. It is the complete show, anyway as complete as it was broadcast in the US. If Televisa would make a complete version, instead of condensed, I'd prefer that. But since no authorized complete version is available, I get this.

Please excuse the double post. I'm having a little problem here. Also, just wanted to say that I LOVE THIS SHOW !!!! It just keeps getting better and better as the plotlines develop , the story unfolds , and the characters become more rounded and real. Carla and Monica certainly know how to weave a tale, and the actors and actresses are really living their roles and making the characters come to life ,...kudos to casting . This telenovela will be right up there with Alborada and Amor Real.

Good points, Julie, and well stated. I am buying the condensed Fea in addition to the complete one I have, and that does make me feel better about having bought the unauthorized one. But I hadn't considered your other two points - that it encourages more condensed productions, and it takes the heat off the unauthorized operations. Thank you for shedding light.

I think in the end I'll go with a condensed version, as I can't seem to be able to watch more than one currently running show, how can I watch a full length show on DVD?

Now - does anyone have any info on when Zorro will be on DVD? I really wanted to watch that and wasn't able to. It looked like a great show, and not just because Miss Perfection Marlene Favela was in it.

Of course it would be nice if they'd produce authorized full-length sets, but with royalties and everything else they'd probably cost a fortune. :(

I considered recording Destilando Amor (and later Pasion) in entirety myself, but quickly realized that I would probably never watch them again. A 17-hour (or whatever) refresher course, maybe. But not the whole thing!

Amor Real and Alborada DVDs condensed version have 2 two-sided discs. I think that it's about 6 hours worth of the telenovela plus extras like bloopers and interviews, and specials about the show. I was very pleased with mine. All the main events of the show are included without the retellings as seen in the regular length show. Those were such excellent novelas. I'm sure you'll enjoy revisiting them. As my Spanish vocabulary grows ever so slowly, I understand more each time I watch them.

Thanks so much for the link, Mad Molly. I've just gotten my shortened 2-disc sets (from Amazon) but I'm also going to spring for the full version of Amor Real as a Valentine's gift to me. I hope those seeing it for the first time get the full impact from either version.

Back to Pasion: We're seeing some great acting turns here and compelling storylines. It's really cookin' now.

Just checked to make sure....Amor Real is 436 minutes in duration.

Anon 8:10 - I was the one asking if Cami actually ever said "I love you" - I understand "Yo tambien" (my spanish isn't THAT bad!) as "me too" - so I don't count that as saying I love you, it's something you would say on the phone if you were embarassed that someone else would hear.

Ferro, I've been watching telenovelas for about 7 years now, and Amor Real is, without a doubt, the most wonderful and grippingly exciting one I've ever seen. Even if it takes you a long time to get through the whole thing, I'd definitely recommend getting the ENTIRE Amor Real. Alborada was pretty good but Amor Real surpassed anything I've ever seen. I work with lots of Latinos and Latinas, and EVERYONE was watching it, husbands included. When I worked late one night and dropped into the taco and burrito restaurant in lieu of cooking anything, THEY had it on, and I'm lucky I got any salsa on my tacos because they were watching so closely!

I am confused. someone said they were surprised that the main characters got married so soon instead of the end. I thought it was camille and santiago that were supposed to be the item and that it was them that marry in the end????

Ferro, you asked about what Mario said when he told his story to Ric on Tuesday before the secret wedding: I just watched it. Mario said he was from a family of “position,” his father the prison warden/chief, with money, everything. Mario met a girl of Quality (society) and was crazy about her. Her brother was jailed for fraud; the girl asked Mario to help him. One night Mario went into the jail, killed a number of guards, got the boy out and the boy took off. There were witnesses, though, and his father knew (found out). His father ordered him to disappear and Mario went looking for the girl, whom he found with someone else. He killed them both. (Ric asked why Mario didn’t learn to read and write if he was of “position,” and me being the special educator thought immediately of a learning disability).

Did that clear up the who did what questions, or is it just more of the same?

Jeanne

Anon 8:17, Ric is the main hero of the story. I'm afraid Santiago is just there to make potential trouble.
