Pasión 2-29: "We may be assassins, but we're just following orders!"
Manuela is still sniffling, I would sniffle too contemplating marriage to a guy who uses a whole can of moustache wax every week. And if my dad had a dead animal's tail hanging down between his eyebrows. And he slams her around, too.
Liz, goaded by Auntie, is agonizing over the difficulty of betraying Ric without getting him mad. Auntie sez give up your pitiful unrequited love - if Ric dumps Camila he'll take another woman, and another, but he'll never take you. Cry and then start looking out for your own interests.
Ric and Mario discuss Foreman's visit. Is he really proposing to let them join Jorge and Alberto's Contraband Band? Mario thinks Jorge will now realize Ric is a pirate and will nail him after Foreman leaves; he begs Ric to skedaddle, they should go back to sea and earn the money Camila now owes because she bought the mill, but Ric won't go - he wants to reveal the Contraband Band, and also has to deal with the ED card of which I am very, very tired...
GRita really wants Saintly to ascend in the socio-economic realm and relocate them both to the palace. He's disgusted. She says, "What, you want your son to grow up to be a snot-nosed blacksmith?" Nice comment to make to a blacksmith. He leaves and Ofelia tells GRita she is an impudent, ambitious egotist. Heh.
Ursula sashays down the street with Fortunata, delighted to be sprung from House Arrest, and spots Foreman in the cafe. She goes over to say hi, though it's not proper. He says "I'd buy you a drink, but it wouldn't be proper." Bouffy (Alberto, of the animal tail forelock) asks Foreman about his dinner at Ric's and reminds him he's expected at Casa Jorge that very night. Then Ursula and Fortunata, hanging on his arms, tell him all the local gossip we already know. They stop for a drink - sherry, chocolate, and champagne. Eew.
Bouffy tells Jorge he's changed his mind and now recommends recognizing Saintly as heir. It would secure the lucrative position - one can't be sure Ursula will bear a son - and the lowly people will like having Saintly, one of their own, elevated. It might be good to get Saintly out of town for a while, though, while the Contraband Band is still doing so well - maybe he can be sent to finishing school in the big city, or be set to doing good works to keep him out of their hairdos.
Saintly shows up at the castle while Bouffy is in conference so he talks with Doña Sofia. She explains how she figured out that Saintly was of her husband's seed and says she wants him to accept the inheritance mainly because he'd be a good governor. "I appreciate your interest, but your husband raped my mother and my fiancee." "Your mother, yes, but Camila, no."
Saintly, so impactado. "Well, why did Camila say he did, then?" "No idea."
Ric tells Mario they have to check out some more of Jorge's henchmen in the continuing push to crack the Contraband Band. Gonzalo and Mateo, for instance. "We need to infiltrate, but they won't accept our guys." "How about Ascanio?" "He says he won't help because you haven't told Camila your true name." "Well, I have now, she was upset but she understands."
They see Saintly at the door, he's come to talk with Camila, "You can be present" he tells Ric. Mario isn't invited, though.
They go in. Saintly isn't too happy about Ric's presence but Ric won't leave -- until Saintly gets all emotional about hating his dad. "I hate him, but hating isn't Christian, I must pardon him," and cries etc. so bleghy to guys, so Ric slips out and paces in another room, wondering what's going on, which is: "Did my father rape you?"
Camila's "no" gets Saintly all happy and crying on her shoulder. "But why didn't you tell me?" "He threatened my dad, and by the time I got back you were married to MY SISTER and what was the point of bringing up old stuff?"
Meanwhile, upstairs, Liz tried to get Clotilde (why does she always have her hand up in the air like those ladies on the commercials shilling for laundry detergent?) to spy on this super secret conversation; Clotilde demurred, afraid of getting fired, so Liz went herself. She is stooping at the door, hearing everything ...
... but then Jimena comes along and catches her eavesdropping and shouts, "This is how you found out about the Ed card!!!" and there's a little tussle, Jimena knocks Liz over and calls her a witch...
... Ric comes along, and Jimena rats Liz out, and then Saintly comes out and wants to know what all the fuss is but Ric, frostily, refuses to share the gossip...
Things calm down. Ric asks Camila what the super-secret conversation was about. She tells him. He asks if Saintly will now accept the inheritance. "I dunno -- oh, don't make that sulky face, my dear!" They make up ...
...while Liz, and her dolly and Auntie, back in their bedroom, are sure they'll get thrown out now! Auntie suggests they go live at Jorge's house. "Oh Auntie, I don't want Ric to think I betrayed him." "He betrayed you first..."
Camila and Ric walk and wonder if it's true that Liz spilled the ED card story to Bouffy. "If the card had not been destroyed, then why hasn't it surfaced yet?"
The conversation moves on to Foreman. Camila hopes Ric won't accept Foreman's proposal that he join the Contraband Band.
"But how am I going to make money?" [I LOVED this conversation. --Ed.] "I don't know, dear, but not by robbing, not by contrabanding, and not by piracy." "You don't understand me." "Yes, I do - all you know how to do is murder and steal."
! ! ! ! ! !
He's indignant. "Well, I don't do it for fun, it's just my job. Yes, we're delinquents and assassins, but we are only following orders..."
! ! ! ! ! !
"... as soldiers do. They may be considered heroes while we're villains, but the job is the same."
Now on to Ofelia and Justo, she's saying yet again that she doesn't want Saintly to accept the inheritance because money corrupts and what if he turns out like his father?
Saintly enters and wants to know: "Why did you never tell me that Jorge did not rape Camila?" Justo: "Because I was a coward and Jorge threatened us." "You should have told me! I would have sought her throughout the world." "God willed it this way." Saintly is not at all appeased by this and briefly disses God. Ofelia tells him not to lose his faith.
It's time for dinner at the Big House. Jorge compliments Foreman: "I didn't think a guy with your ... interests ... could be a gentleman." "In our profession, you find all kinds." "Are you affiliated with the English Armada?" "We consider ourselves to be an inferior branch, we have our own ships but we don't get paid, so we have to seek our own compensation."
The reason Alberto wrote to Foreman and invited him now comes out: "The place we have to take the cargo is too far away and therefore too dangerous. We'd prefer that the merchandise be collected closer." "OK, I know a place half a day's journey from here, you can leave the booty and I'll have some guys pick it up." Jorge is surprised that there is a suitable spot so close: "In my lands?" "No, in the adjoining realm, Salvatierra." "Who would pick up the booty?" "People I trust." "Filibusters?" "Yes." "The ones that interfered with our operations?" "'fraid so - they were bored and nervous and needed something to do, it won't happen again."
Back to Ofelia and Saintly, who says he'll go see Jorge tomorrow. Ma is worried about Rita: "Sometimes I think there's a demon in her body." "No, ma, it's my fault, I haven't been a good husband since Camila returned." "We're all at fault - we should have counseled you to wait."
Saintly says he hates Ricardo, there is something hidden inside him. "But look how good he is, he paid for the mill..." "No, he didn't, it was Camila's money, he's an adventurer." "Do you still want Camila?" "I will never stop wanting her."
STRAW POLL: How many of you think Ric will die and Saintly will get Camila? How many of you think, instead, that Saintly will die? Both? Neither?
Foreman says there is a plague of contraband in New Spain. He suggests that Jorge is well-situated to fix all necessary documents. "It's risky." "Not as risky as stealing the stuff." They want to rob while the robbing's good, they sense the golden age of thievery is coming to an end. [Never --Ed.]
After leaving, Foreman tells Bouffy that he finds Jorge fearful. "No, he's cautious - he has to think of his prestige, but he'll go with your plan in the end." Big ending: "Tell me, is Ricardo a pirate?" The curtain falls.

Normally, I've got really strong opinions about how I want a show to go, but this is one time I just can't decide what would be best! (Or likeliest.) Camila ultimately being returned to her first love would be oh-so-romantic, but how much would it hurt her to lose Ric now? And if Santi goes, who'll be the kindly taxman who endeth Jorge's reign of impotent terror? If we could just find Santi a nice girl to finally get him over it properly...
I think Ric would have to die for Cami to end up with Saintly since she is way too in love with Ric, and I don't think they would kill Ric, so I'm sure Ric will get Cami and who knows with Saintly.
Yes, Saintly did say he'd have tried harder to find Cami - his justification though was that he DIDN'T search because he thought she'd killed herself and he'd have known she wouldn't have done that if he'd known she hadn't been raped. That was so lame and convoluted it made me tired to think about writing it so I left it out.

I just assumed it would be Ric in the end but with all this talk, I'm beginning to think it may be Saintly ... not my choice :o(
As for "just deserts" I really hope the directors give us the satisfaction of long-drawn-out justicio. Death, torture, the fires of hell. Whatever! I wanna see 'em suffer: grrRita, Tia, Lis, LaBouff, and the Don.
Yep from the first whine on..Saintly was asking for it. If Rita continues to live (which I doubt), well then Saintly would no doubt opt for death. Otherwise, he'd opt to get in Cami's knickers. I pick Ric for Cami as Jeez, I mean Cami & Saintly had like one good memory, then he wandered off, then Don Jorge, the impotant impaler intervented, then Cami got gang banged by pirates, then Don Timmy (who I bet smelled of decay, and even thou she didn't have to sleep with Don Timmy, it wasn't really good times), then she comes back to Rita/Saintly. So I think their would be lots of baggage. Besides those Thanksgiving dinners would be really awkward with his "new side" of the family. Ric gets my vote.
In your straw vote, I must say I feel that telenovela's, like fairy tales, always end up goody twoshoes.
I think Ric and Cam will live happily ever after and Saintly will find a wonderful woman (Lis?)and live happily ever after and all the townspeople will love him as their new governor.
As for the baddies, I hope they suffer, suffer and then die.
Alice
I wonder if we will have any of Carla Estrada's famed public executions in this show? I would put Bouffy at the top of the list for this.
Wonderful recap Melinama. I love the title, how appropriate and timely. Thanks for filling in!!
The conversation with Ric & Cami discussing future career options is very interesting. Of course she's in complete denial about the reality of their options, but that she sees Ric as a murderer and thief is revealing. The writers are showing more and more of a wedge in their differences in how they view life. So, she and Saintly would pair up more easily, but I have a feeling that Ric will be the one to keep her. I'm not sure if that's a good thing, but being a novela novice, this is out of my league.
Top on my torture/death list would be Buffy, followed by a lesser evil, Tia, Grita, Liz and Jorhey. Buffy is pure evil, Tia had someone killed to get her way and continues to lie and push her agenda. Grita is a manipulator and coward also, while the world revolves around her. Liz really knows how to play the 'ciega' card and is driving this whole ED card mess, while doing it in the name of 'love' for Ric. Then Jorhey's hands are just as dirty as Buffy's for killing, stealing, etc.
The only happy ending I'm hoping for is that MMM Mario marries the brave, smart and lovely (though chismosa) Jimena...

I don't think anyone said Sofia is a terrible person. Maybe they were talking about her husband Jorge?
Finally, I have been totally spoiled and there are no loose ends in this. Some plot points may take a lot longer to be resolved than you'd like, but they will be.
melinama, thanks for the amusing recap.
Cami Supporter
And I agree with Susanlynn...Ric will get Camila because he has a bigger....role.... was that the word?
How in the heck can Auntie say that Ric has betrayed Liz? Did I miss something? She is right in that Ric would never marry her so Liz needs to move on. I too would like to see Santi hook up with Liz. At least she isn't harpy like Grrita. Speaking of Grrita, kudos to Ofelia for finally saying to her what I believe everyone has been thinking.
I absolutely cheered when my girl Jimena caught Liz eavesdropping. What would have been better is if the maid did go listen in instead of Liz. Jimena has had that nosy body maid's number since day one. That would have been sweet!
I was glad to see Ric show some class in letting Santi & Cami talk alone even after Santi said Ric could stay to listen. Heavens know what his reasoning was for leaving the room.
I don't think Ric is going to bite the big one nor will Santi. If someone is going to bite the big one, hopefully it will be Bouffy, Auntie Fran, the Nosy Body Maid or even Grrita. I can't think of four more deserving candidates.
As for Grita.....she definitely needs to go! Saintly can find someone else. Mario and Jimena should live happily ever after, and Ascanio and Manuela will hopefully also live happily ever after! Don't really care about what happens to Ursula.
Can't wait for Monday night's show!
I definitely vote for Ric to get the girl. I don't know if Saintly will die, but I'm pretty sure he won't live happily ever after with GRita. Maybe she'll die and a new character will be introduced for Saintly. Someone else earlier posted that they thought Cami would raise Grita's baby, and I suppose that could happen. And I'm surprised Cami hasn't shown up preggers by now. Usually novela heroines are fertile Myrtles.
And, yeah, Saintly's comment that, if he'd known Jorge couldn't do the deed with Cami, he'd have searched forever, was pretty dumb, although I accept that it could mean he'd thought she committed suicide. But, another continuity error, because he did continue to hope she'd return for months. So, why would her continued virginity mean he'd have waited longer?
I think Saintly is on the road to becoming less saintly. Didn't he diss God in the last episode? How saintly is it to knock Ric and say he think he's an adventurer, without his knowing anything specific? And he certainly looked JEALOUS when Paco talked about Tio Ric and his horses and his eventually riding one. I think Santi is going to become Don Jorge's heir and turn into a not very nice person, resulting in Ric getting the girl.
There's plenty of precedent for the heroine's original BF to not end up becoming Mr. Heroine. In Heridas, which is the first telenovela ENDING I've ever seen, Miranda started out with Fabrizio (I think that was his name?), but he ended up marrying her middle sister instead, and Miranda ended up with Guy Ecker. (I liked Fab better, but it was obvious that that was never going to happen.)
I don't think either Ric or Santi will die. I just can't see Cami going back to Santi in any case. I think she's outgrown him in too many ways. Even if becoming señor eventually makes him a wiser person, I just can't see it.
I really do love the idea of Santi + Lis - but that assumes that she'll get over Ric and find some other motivation for living. That seems pretty iffy right now.
Maybe Lis and Santi team up for petty reasons, then fall in love, and then BOTH reform and become nice? Would that be too weird?
It's obvious, though, that Cami has a problem with the way Ric makes his living. How is this going to be resolved? What else can he do for a living? Real estate??
I miss Claudio. I hope he comes back into the story soon!
As for the voting: I vote early, often and forever for my personal favorite Ricardo. He's the hero with enough spicy badboy with a heart of gold. Santi is too guapo to die and way too saintly. I think he was Camila's early innocent love, unconsummated and they have both changed. Anyway she won't truly forget that he married her ugly sister when he gave in to the nagging of the family and chose to accept that she wouldn't come back, after only a few months. He's not interesting enough to spice up her life now that she has seen Pareee, uhhhh, I mean Ric, I mean really seen him... makes me feel a little dizzy to dwell on this.
I am a Camila fan and don't think every heroine should be Adela Noriega or Lucero or their clones although I love both of them. I am happy to see a different sort of heroine and I think this role is slowly maturing and developing.
There used to be a rumor that it was originally legal to kill someone in Texas if they needed killin'. My list for resurrecting that law here in Telenovelaland is a rather long one.
Guapos is well my kind of TeleNovela, overacting and stupid plot lines and the best cliche, after 18 years, now we wonder what happened to the missing grandkid, hey I guess people get busy and time slips by.
I agree with you, Ric is an awesome piece of piracy.
Lookin forward to tonight's episode.
My vote is for Ric & Cami but we all know that it will be a long & torturous path to "Happily Ever After." I bet Santi will eventually be freed from Grasping Grita, Ascanio will provide a pleasant surprise (still waters run deep, my mom always advised), & Good will trump Evil by the end. The fun lies in the way we get there!
I definitely think we have to get this calendar off the ground. Isn't there some charitable organization that needs a great fund raising idea?
:-0
OF COURSE Ricardo and Camilla will make a life together! She already told Santi that she is no longer that young nieve girl he fell in love with; she wants and needs Ricardo for 'so many reasons'; she has forgotten how much in love they two (Santi and Cami) were. The hard headed Santiago may need to actually look into Ricardo's eyes and accept the woman is gone for good!
But I am sensing that Foreman now knows Ri-car-do's weak spots. And why was Iguana such a publicized safe haven ANYway! Do they have the fort built yet?!
Meanwhile, Tia goes on the search party to find gRita and the fallen tree rolls over her and traps her....hanging over that swift water fall. There was a water fall, right?
How does that sound?
;-)
No, then not a horse hit. I want more vi-o-lence in my retribution. Whoresela was carrying that basket of scorpions...and quick as a swarm of bees, they attack the fallen bodies. ...the safe untouched horses are down the road apiece. :)
M in MN
Probably not... I don't think women in telenovelas get killed for being nosy. Remember in Destilando, Elvira was dismissed and given a decent severance, while what's her name, the younger one at the CRT who was actually getting paid for her treachery, was simply fired.
Oh, Ric & I are in the daisy field with the horses, riding off into the sunset because I'm WAY smarter than Cami. Brains beats beauty every time.
I think a lot of these people will bring their own endings on themselves - I'm still in favor of Rita getting in a huff and stomping off and either falling off a cliff or going into labor and dying. The baby might survive or not, depending. Ursula ... ends up married to Foreman and whisked off to live piratically ever after on an island ... with no other men around. Francisca will alienate everyone and end up in a convent (and not one of the nice ones where you only pray and do embroidery - she'll be scrubbing floors).
Toddson
Ursula would make a great pirate wench. But I think she would be more of a pirate queen. She would give Foreman a run for his money. Possibly literally.
Clotilde + fire ants + wandering scorpions = satisfying ending for me.
There are a lot of anvils to fall. Fortunately in this show we have some blacksmiths handy and their anvils very close by...
Speaking of blacksmiths, Mad Maggie you can gallop out of the daisy field with Ric, but then I get Ascanio, San Fernando's Next Top Apron Model, for myself.
MinMN
Days later, Tia Fran is out at on the coast in a small boat. She's going to bribe a doctor to replace the ED letter. Something bumps the side of the boat. Tia Fran sees it's gRita's body. Filled with disgust, not by the decay, but by the thought of being so close to foul peasants, she barfs overboard. The smell distracts the shark that has been nibbling gRita's fingers. It leaps out of the water and consumes skinny little Fran in one bite, just as greed and treachery had consumed her throughout life.
Well, I take a "Pollyanna" view of novelas, so I like as neat and happy an ending as possible. But there are some people who in my opinion, MUST go! Rita is number one, followed by LaFont and Tia Fran (I can't stand her!). Jorge can go either way at this point. Sometimes he shows a genuine fondness for Sofia, and I think to myself "maybe he's not that bad". Even though she is a horrible person, I would like to see Lis rehabilitated. She seems to have a liking for Santi, and she once said that his hands were like Ricardo's. On his part, he is very kind and protective of her. I wouldn't mind seeing them together. I know- I am WAY too soft and sentimental. Hello? That's why I watch telenovelas in the first place!
the letter will come into play, and
when eventually your "Saintly" takes over,he'll be able to rectify
things for Camila,etc..I guess,then
"Curly" would have to die or something,in oredr for him to come into power, right? Hmmmm. The real question is,...Will any scalp
"Eddie Munster"? P.
I don't want Ric to die, but since he's lived by the sword (though it wasn't his fault it got that way), he should be the one to die by it--and very heroically. but he's the big hero of Novela Land--which means he'll probably make it out alive instead of Santi.
GRita should be smashed by a runaway carriage (an expensive golden one) and leave Santi to raise their child.
The tiny animal on top of LaFont's head should suddenly wake up and claw him to death in its confusion. It's good that Lis is blind; if she could see that thing, she'd bash it with her cane.
Well, yeah, Whorehey should go down in flames, while Whoresula should find that one good man who changes her around. I wouldn't mind it if Fran joined the ranks of the dead as well.
It'll be interesting to see what characters do avoid the chopping block. The answers may end up surprising us... :)
I'm voting for Ric and Saintly both to live, with Ric and Cami ending up together. Cami has outgrown her innocent love for Santi; she's given her heart to Ric. He didn't scorn her even though she was raped by pirates and he feels a real bond with her.
Santi can have another chance at love, because gRita will surely suffer some ghastly fate. She doesn't deserve to live in the palace or wear fine clothes--too mean and selfish.
I bet Lis will be on the alert for Jimena from now on. That girl knows how to bring it.
And thanks for Pancho and Crispin's real names, as well as all the other ideas for a guapos calendar.
La Paloma
I'm dyin' over here. You are too funny!
As for our calendar, FC is a shape-changer - he has so many different looks. So why not have four different FC looks, for four different months. Different looks:
