Pasion Thursday March 27—Santiago's up, Ric's still down; Paco's getting another new cousin

On board the Salamandra, Paisana and Mario have charge of Ric’s care. Mario rushes into the room and asks Paisana if she gave him the herbs that Chino’s healer gave them. Paisana says no because she didn’t know which ones to give him. Mario, exasperated, says that the guy told them to mix them all together. Mario expresses his doubts about oriental medicine and thinks it should have worked by now. Paisana responds that it’s in God’s hands now. She remarks that he has great love for his captain. Mario snaps back that they all do. Ric groans in discomfort.

Ines is walking with Justo. She’s angry that her brother has gotten involved in this mess with Camila and Ric. He’s stubborn and proud. She agreed with him when he swore he wouldn’t do anything with Don Jorge, but now Jorge is the only guy who can help Camila.

Back on the boat, Ric is calling for Camila. Mario tries to calm him. He tries to get up and everybody tries to hold him down. He’s delirious and starts raving about having leeches put on him. He doesn’t want any leeches. Mario finally cold cocks him to get him unconscious again. Paisana suggests giving him a cold bath to lower his fever.

At Mancera Mansion, Santiago has gone to tell Don Jorge about Lis’ cruelty toward Camila. How she won’t sell her. Jorge says that Lis is within her rights. Santiago exclaims, “So you’re not going to help?” Jorge says “I could.” Santiago says hotly “In exchange for what?” Jorge says, you know, be recognized as my son and heir. Santiago replies “to keep your lands?” Jorge says that his family originally fought to earn their lands and In his lineage there were good and bad men, “just like in any family.” But what they earned ought to be conserved, “it’s a divine right” he finishes up. Santiago looks thoughtful and then says that he wants to borrow the money to free Camila. Jorge says no—it will be his welcome gift to Don Santiago de Mancera. Santiago looks nervous.

Later, Jorge is at La Font’s. He makes flirtatious small talk with Manuela, telling her that she’s very pretty and that she must have a lot of admirers. Manuela says no and gets all flustered. He says she should. She asks about the gossip with Camila and Ricardo. He says it’s water under the bridge. La Font comes in and Jorge tells him that he knows that Lis is refusing to sell Camila. He tells LaFont that he knows that Ric has paid the debt. La Font says, so what, even if the debt is paid, if the will is invalid, so is Camila’s letter granting her freedom. He tells Jorge that Lis is within her rights to keep Camila. Jorge says flatly that Lis’s rights are not above his—and he wants to buy Camila as a present for Santiago. La Font complains that the other night, Jorge seemed to accede to Santiago’s wishes. “Could it be that your judgement is affected by this young guy?” SO? Says Jorge and he turns on his heel and leaves. LaFont looks mighty uncomfortable at Jorge’s displeasure.

Lis and Fran are reviewing the previous nights’ events. Lis is angry at her aunt for interfering. “You had no right” she says in tears. Fran says that she was just trying to avoid having her commit a crazy act that would ruin her life, she says “I had the right, I took care of you your whole life.” Lis responds that she did it of her own accord. She never asked her to. She did it because she was alone and had no children of her own. And now, she finishes, she says she hates her Aunt because if she hadn’t done what she did, Ric would still be alive. Fran points out that if she hadn’t tried to run away with him, he’d also be alive. But he’d still be in love with Camila. Lis is overflowing with tears now and burbles about Camila having bewitched him. Fran says it doesn’t matter anyway now because he’s DEAD. There’s a knock at the door, it’s Clothilde announcing that Alberto has arrived. Lis doesn’t want to see him but Fran tells her to dry her eyes so that he doesn’t realize who she’s crying for. She tells Clotilde to show him into the great room and offer him something.

A few moments later, Lis is with LaFont. He’s already made the pitch to her to sell Camila to Jorge because she’s already refusing and saying that she’s within her rights to keep her. La Font explains how Jorge wants her to sell Camila to him so that he can give her Santiago but Lis still refuses. “I have to give in to the will of a blacksmith?” LaFont, exasperated, says that it’s Jorge wishes she’s giving into and her rights are not above his. Lis again refuses and LaFont finally does a powerplay. Grabbing her by the face, he tells her that (1) he knows she was about to betray him with Ricardo (he puts off her feeble excuse that Ric forced her) (2) she owes him for what he’s already done for her; (3) they’ve signed a marriage contract and she’s going to honor it and (4) he expects total obedience from her after they are married or it will go very badly for her. The stricken look on Lis’ face is priceless.

Next we see Camila in modest garb and rucksack leaving the house. Her family are there waiting for her with Jimena and Ascanio. Santiago and Rita are back at home. While Santiago washes his hands in a basin, Rita asks cloyingly why Santiago did not go with the rest of the family to greet Camila. Santiago that mostly it was her family that went. Rita points out that Ofelia went, Santiago turns on her and asks why SHE didn’t go and Rita claims she would have only the baby was constipated. He lopes away from her and sits at the table. Rita demands that servant Ramona ask him what he wants. Santiago is oblivious to her aires until she starts harping on when the ceremony is , whether they will be living in the palace, etc. When he tells her and says that Jorge wants him to move in with him, Rita is ecstatic. Santiago finally notices her unseemly happiness and looks disgusted by her. She seems to notice his reaction anc backtracks by saying “how nice this will be for the baby.”

Meanwhile, Jimena and Camila are walking home. Jimena asks her about what happened to her clothes. Camila is dressed like a peasant. Camila explains that Lis demanded that she leave them all, that they all belonged to her. Jimena says that this was not right, that some of the dresses were bought for her by Ricardo. She can borrow some of her dresses and she will fix her up. Camila says she doesn’t care. This is the way she wants to dress, as Justo’s daughter. And besides, right now she has no thought in her head other than to find a way to look for Ricardo. “OK, miller’s daughter! says Jimena.” They finally arrive at home and Paquito runs up all happy to see his Aunt Camila. He asks about Uncle Ric and Camila gasps and hugs him.

Days later, another boy is running toward the surf on some distant shore. He cries “the Antillano is coming! He’s been wounded!” Sure enough, the gaggle of pirates from the Salamandra has landed and is carrying Ric along on a stretcher.

Back at the Mill offices. Camila is with Jimena and Ascanio. Camila begs Jimena to come and live with them at Justo’s. Jimena begs off, saying that there’s really no place for her there. Ascanio then chimes in that he was thinking of moving. Camila bursts into tears and says that she needs them both close to her, now more than ever. She misses Ric so much! He’s the love of her life and they are her true friends. She reminds them both of when they were together with Claudio, how they made a little family and she prayed that they would never be separated. Even though Claudio was no longer around, she hoped that they would remain. Ascanio breaks the moment by mentioning that before the fateful night, Ric had entrusted to him a letter that was supposed to be given to Justo. He gives it to Camila saying that he would leave it up to her to decide whether to give to her father or not. Camila takes the letter and holds it to her breast.
It’s now nighttime. Camila is alone and she opens the letter.

My Most Esteemed Don Justo,

I hoped to have been able to tell you this personally but events intervened and I was unable to do so.

I deeply love your daughter. Why? Love has no explanation. It’s a gift from God. Love comes suddenly, it holds us, it’s an obsession, It makes us feel that without this person, life isn’t worth living. Life without Camila isn’t worth it.

Camila talks back to the letter—“Me too, my love. Life isn’t worth living without you. You are my life, my time.

I know that you have been informed of who I am and what I do. But I want to explain to you how I came to this. My misfortune began when I was falsely accused of a crime. Fortunately, the case is now closed and I have been cleared, but it’s too late. I turned to piracy because that was the only way I could survive. I was a boy of 17. At that age, the survival instinct is much stronger than the intellect. When I left my home I joined a group of men, whose situation as desperate as my own. One day a group of pirates disembarked in search of water and after killing a bunch of us, put the choice to the rest of us to join them or die.

[We see a flashback of a younger Foreman in adorable flaxen braids making this demand on a a beach—Ric looks scruffier and has longer hair.]

In reality, all of us chose life. Since I knew how to read and write, the captain, an English pirate had me writing his logs (bitacora) and later I learned navigation, the routes, how to fight. Although I tried to become accustomed to the life, I never was able to do it. There was too much blood, too much violence and I always looked for a way out. I killed, yes, but it was kill or be killed. Then one day a woman appeared. No ordinary woman, but a special woman. And I don’t know what happened to me with her.

[Flashbacks of him kissing her in bed and them telling each other that they love one another].

She is the one that I dreamed of having children with, a family. It was never my attention to marry your daughter with a name other than my own. I had hoped to marry her AFTER I had received my pardon, which I expected since I was doing the crown some service. But events got ahead of us and I was forced to marry Camila in order to protect her

[flashbacks of the ailing Justo in bed telling Camila to hurry up and Marry Ric to protect her virtue--recall that Ric promised Justo that he would marry Camila quickly in order to keep Don Jorge from forcing her to be his mistress.]

I should have told you and her but love made me afraid. Yes, I was afraid of losing her.

[Another flashback of Ric seeming hesitant to marry Camila and Camila accusing him of not really wanting to marry her, or that she had so many problems that he didn’t want to get involved. Ric says it’s not that but…stopping short of telling her the truth.]

I affirm that Camila is my wife and that we are married because to me, we swore an oath before God on an altar and we are married until one of us dies. I know it will occasion great suffering to take her far away from you but it’s the only way that I can avoid that she continue as a servant. My affection for your family and my love for Camila are sincere, please never doubt it.

Camila clutches the letter and cries.

Outside, of Ric’s beach house, there is a prayer vigil going on. There are statues and a bonfire. A crowd holding candles sings a hymn, the refrain of which is in latin—dona nobis pacem (grant us peace). Inside the house, Paisana, Mario and Pablo are taking care of Ric, who is still sweating with a fever. Pablo tells them that he’s seen a squad of guards nearby, they should get going. Paisana says she doesn’t think that they are looking for Ric. Mario says he doesn’t care, he wants to get back on the ship and head for Coral Island. Paisana disagrees—if they move him again, he’ll die. Mario feels the pulse around his neck.

It’s the next morning and Camila and Jimena are now both dressed like peasant girls with kerchiefs and linen aprons. Jimena asks Cami whether she’s going to deliver Ric’s letter to her father. Camila says she doesn’t know. Jimena whispers that there goes Santiago and sure enough, he limps briskly past without seeing them to greet Justo. Justo thanks him for intervening to get Camila set free. Santiago responds that there’s nothing to thank him for, they are family. Camila approaches and there is an awkward exchange of greetings. Santiago indicates the folder of papers under his arm and says that he’s come to give her freedom documents. Jorge signed them and gave them to him. Camila is overjoyed to the point of tears and Justo does a silent YES! in the background. Santiago leaves and there are hugs all around. Justo comments that Santiago has behaved very well in this instance. Camila takes her Dad aside and says she needs to talk to him. About Ricardo. Justo counsels her to start over and forget “that man.” Camila says she can’t. She’s upset because she doesn’t know if he’s dead or alive. Justo responds equivocally that everyone’s life is in God’s hands. She replies that she knows but she needs to know. Justo says, “Listen, I don’t doubt that he was in love with you, He paid your debt with Lisabeta but he married you in a sham wedding and he’s a PIRATE. “It was due to misfortune, Dad!” she pleads. Justo isn’t buying it. “I’m not going to let my daughter continue to be deluded by a criminal.” She shoots back that he’s not a criminal and she’s not deluded. She LOVES him. Justo points out that sometimes people fall in love with the wrong person. He uses Ines as an example. Vasco’s a disaster. Cami argues that it’s not the same. Justo says her case is WORSE. Ric held her up to the whole town for ridicule as a loose woman (una qualquiera). Cami is impactada by this and has to take a step backward. Clearly these words from Dad stung. She runs to the nearest tree and leans against it, crying. Justo goes after her and says that she’s hurting, but she has to be strong. He reminds her that she was also very much in love with Santiago. She says “that was different!” Justo asks why, “Because Ric sailed around under a pirate flag and made himself rich (robbing people)?” Camila laughs and says “NO!” and shakes her head at Dad. Justo says that Ric was a liar. He even lied about his fortune. Justo relates how Ric told him that his fortune had been stolen, now he’s not sure that was true. Camila says that it WAS true. Justo says he lied to everybody. Camila says not to her he didn’t. Justo doesn’t like the sound of this. He tells her to forget him the same way that she forgot Santiago. He walks away. Jimena runs to her and they hug eachother.

Later, inside, Jimena and Cami talk it over. Cami can’t understand why her Dad is harshing on Ric. Jimena says to look at it from his point of view. To Justo, Ric is a pirate who deceived his daughter. Jimena asks about the letter. Cami says, “why? He’s never going to understand.” Camila says that she doesn’t know where Ric is but she has to go try to find him. She thinks they should start looking in La Iguana. That’s where they first took them when they were kidnapped. Jimena asks if she knows how to get there. They were taken in a closed wagon and couldn’t see where they were going. Camila says that they could ask. Jimena asks her “who?” She points out that if it’s El Antillano’s secret pirate lair, it’s likely to be remote, hard to find and well…secret. Camila despairs but then suddenly gets an idea—“That man, the Oriental—he knows Ricardo!” She grabs her shawl and rushes out with Jimena trailing behind.

Next they are in the street outside the hotel. Yoshi-he (AKA el Chino) who comes out with the acupuncture specialist. Chino greets her and notes her being freed. She confirms this. He introduces her to Master Fukuda, the alternative medicine practitioner who attended Ric. She asks Fukuda if he thinks he saved Ric. Fukuda says he did all he could and now it was out of his hands. They begin walking. Camila tells Chino that she wants to go to LaIguana to find Ric. Chino says he knows where it is but it’s very far away. Camila is crestfallen but asks for his help. Jimena tells him they just need directions. Camila says she needs to know if Ric is dead or alive. Chino tells her that he was thinking of sending someone to find out how he was doing. Camila asks to go with them. Chino says that if she leaves town they will send guards to find her. They’ll trail her right to Ric, and if he’s still alive, they’ll finish him off. He says he’s about to leave and will send her a report if he finds out anything. After establishing that she can read and her last name, Chino tells her that Ric is no ordinary guy; he’s not easily defeated. The two men bid the ladies goodbye and they go their separate ways.

Chino and Fukuda had been on their way to see Don Jorge. Chino tells him that he needs to leave for the Antilles to buy more merchandise. Chino says he’s tapped out with everything he’s brought and he needs to get more for here and to fulfill other contracts. Jorge asks him where else he sells and Chino tells him that his most important market is New Orleans. They sit on the sofas. Chino further explains that many of his former er comrades have retired there to become prosperous merchants or landowners. Jorge says that piracy must be a good business. Chino says for a few, fortunate people. The majority end up on the gallows. “And you are one of the fortunate ones” comments Jorge. “Until now” says Chino with a laugh. “I’ve been lucky but one never knows.” Jorge turns to Fukuda and asks if he is staying. Fukuda responds saying that he can’t stick around too long either. He needs to get started on his son right away because he’ll need a few sessions to fix his leg. Jorge asks if Santiago’s leg can be fixed up good as new. Fukuda says he’ll know more when he’s localized the problem.

Justo has stopped by Ofelia’s. She’s giving somebody a potion to get rid of his tapeworm problem. The guy leaves and Justo unburdens himself about Camila. She’s still stuck on Ric and won’t give up trying to justify his actions. He says he understands that he may have suffered misfortunes but he lied to them all and she got involved with him. Ofelia says that he should try to understand her. “Life hasn’t been good for your daughter.” Justo says that the only thing he wants is for her to forget him. He thinks that will end her suffering. Ofelia says “Hopefully.” “But sometimes the suffering never ends.” She tells him to sit down. He asks how she’s doing. She tells him that next week, Jorge is going to recognize Santiago as his son and heir. Justo says that he knows that she’s not happy about it but she should think about how this is a good thing for him. Justo asks her what she’s afraid of. Ofelia tells him that she’s afraid of a lot of things. They’ve always been a very strong family. With straightforward friendships, good, hardworking people. But now…her son will be living in another world. He’ll be living in a palace with his wife and child. Justo tries to reassure her that Santiago won’t forget them. Ofelia agrees that her son has always been good but with them gone, the house will be very lonely. Justo places his hand on hers to comfort her.

We jump ahead to next week and the big ceremony in church. The priest announces that Don Jorge has decided to “rectify an error of his youth “ by recognizing his son, Santiago. He holds up a scroll and hands it to Don Jorge. Don Jorge takes the scroll and hands it to Santiago. The Priest comments that everyone knows Santiago as a virtuous man, who is kind to all and who has lived his whole life in accordance with the precepts of Holy Mother Church. The Priest hands Jorge a GIANT ornate cross on a chain. Santiago kneels before his dad and Don Jorge puts it around his neck. A choir of two women starts singing an Alleluia. (Song of Praise) Next Jorge hands him a little plaque with the Mancera Coat of Arms. He announces that now he is a worthy heir of the Mancera family. [We see the elated expression of Rita in the background and Ofelia’s less happy one. There is applause all around and we see various expressions. Sofia’s face bathed in tears—all her scheming has worked. Wacky Lis smiling slightly, no doubt preoccupied on her own problems, Ursula with a mixed expression of her own—cut out of the inheritance. Fortunata with a genuinely happy expression. More Alleluias from the choir.] Outside, the priest announces that everybody should be happy that Santiago has gained his rightful place under the human and divine law. He says he’s sure that when it’s Santiago’s turn to govern San Fernando, he’ll do a good job, like his father before him. Don Jorge smiles. A children’s choir starts singing a hymn in Latin. [I think it is this one].

We’re done with the Church, now it’s time for the State. A squad of soldiers comes up to the steps of the church and the lead guy hands Santiago what looks like a small dagger covered with ribbons on a pillow. Santiago lifts it off the pillow and raises it up then puts it back down on the pillow. The soldiers take it away. More applause. Rita leans over to Santiago and presents her cheek for him to kiss. She’s wearing a dress with about three feet of lace hanging from the sleeves. Justo is wearing is fancy scarlet coat next to her. Vasco and the others are handing around well dressed in the background. Don Jorge asks Justo to come to the party and Justo says he’d be honored. Meanwhile Ines is trying to coax Ofelia into going. She doesn’t want to. Ines tells her she needs to leave her feelings aside and do it for Santiago. He’s going to feel bad if she’s not there. Ofelia refuses. Camila who has been standing with Jimena calls out to Santiago. He comes over to her and she congratulates him. Jimena says that she hopes when it’s his time to rule, she hopes he’ll be a better Lord than his father. He nods and leaves. Rita comes along with Ursula. Camila congratulates her and Rita smiles broadly and asks her if she like the new dress she has on that Sofia gave to her. Rita tells her that she should come over to the palace and tell her “all about her pirate.” Camila says she has nothing to tell and gives her a dark look and withdraws. Rita sniffs like whatever, on with the show and continues along with Ursula.

Santiago encounters the guys from the office—the twins and Ascanio, all dressed to the 9s. the twins are in matching scarlet jackets. One of them says wow boss, who would have thought! They are happy for him. Santiago says modestly that he hopes he’s doing the right thing. Santiago turns to Ascanio and thanks him for coming. Ascanio says he wouldn’t have missed such an important event. Santiago says that since the business trip to San Miguel Fair, he has realized that he was right in a lot of what he said. We all make mistakes. Ascanio generously allows that he’s made a few too and hopes that Santiago forgives him. Santiago asks him to come and see him. “At the house?” Ascanio asks. Santiago tells him that Don Jorge wants him to go move into the palace with him. The twins ask about the blacksmith’s shop and he says that he hasn’t forgotten them. After a pat on the back from Ascanio, Santiago moves on. LaFont is next and announces to him “Santiago Mancera y Ruiz…You can’t know how pleased I am and everybody in San Fernando is to have an heir [to the title].” Santiago thanks him tersely. Lis who is beside him, congratulates him as well and notes that the priests words were very apt. Fran gushes that everybody holds him in high esteem and know that he’ll make a great Lord. Santiago gruffly says “God willing.” He limps off. As they turn to go, Lis trips and LaFont grabs her before she goes sprawling. He gives her a look of exasperation. The bloom is off the rose.

Ascanio and the twins are still kibitzing about future of the smithy. They ask Ascanio to find out when he goes to talk to Santiago. Manuela sees Ascanio and says that she’s sorry that she hasn’t seen him at the blacksmiths.’ Ascanio tells her that he no longer works there—he works at the Mill now. Manuela nervously excuses herself and runs off. Ascanio looks wistfully after her. The twins look at him sadly.

Over at Mancera Mansion, musicians are playing and a party is in full swing. Jorge and Santiago are sitting on a dais. People are eating, drinking and dancing. LaFont is nervously sitting in a corner and Lis is enjoying the music. We see pretty much every minor character in the show with some kind of social status or a set of good clothes.

Meanwhile, the pirates are still holed up at El Antillano HQ. Pablo comes running down the beach, and comes into the hut to ask how Ric is doing. LP and Mario have just been talking about Ric’s condition. It hasn’t improved. LP tells Mario it’s not the herbal cure’s fault. Ric has sustained two mortal wounds. Ric is murmuring what sounds like Camila’s name. Pablo is the bearer of bad news—he’s seen another squadron of guards. This is the third one. Mario tells Pablo to make the ready the Salamandra and the Camila. LP says nothing but looks alarmed. Ric continues mumbling in his delirium.

At Justo’s Camila is crying when Jimena comes upon her. She tries to jolly her friend. Camila is worried that no reports have arrived about Ric’s whearabouts or wellbeing. Jimena says too little time has passed. She’s going to have to be patient. Camila says darkly that maybe they haven’t sent anyone because they found out he’s already dead. She cries that she was there and saw what happened—he got shot in the chest and stabbed in the gut. Nobody survives that. Jimena says that she needs to have faith. Camila says she’s always had faith but look what happened—She returned to find Santiago married and after finding Ric, she loses him. Jimena insists that she hasn’t lost him. She hugs her. All of the sudden, Camila covers her mouth runs away and [in one of the two unmistakable signs of a telenovela pregnancy—the other being fainting] WRETCHES against a wall of the house. Jimena asks her if she’s sick to her stomach. Camila says yes. Jimena asks if she’s eaten anything and Camila says no. Jimena thinks it’s that. Camila says she thinks she might be PREGNANT! Jimena says “a child of Ricardo!!” and the two start jumping up and down excitedly. Camila says he always wanted a child She prays to God that he might know this child. “Truly, yes,” adds Jimena.

Next time: Camila tells Ines and Paco and they take the news well too. Justo, not so much. Ric’s life still hangs in the balance. ULTIMOS CAPITULOS and the next chapter is advertised as MONDAY.

Margaret: I missed last night's chapter. Your recap has helped fill in the gaps. It is excellent, thank you.

From lower Ala

Oh Margaret, thank you so much.
And I was so into the show last night that I couldn't separate the ending from the previews!

Pacopacopaco...Noo.ooo. I said (early in the episode before he appeared on screen!) Go to Tia Camila's room, look in that curious box, and take that letter to abuelo :) (Camila is being so silly looking for the right moment to give it to Justo!)
At the end (I thought) of the episode he appears and did you see Inex reach for him three seconds TOO LATE. I fell back against the pillows laughing.
You did good Sweetie Pie, now go on...go to tia Camila's room.

THIS is truly interactive television. I was talking to the TV. But the Script Writers once again had a surprise and delightful re-direct for me! I love this story. And I LOVE the little Bombadier!
Abuelo is still on medication right?

Margaret, thanks for that excellent recap and comments. Reading it, I enjoyed the events of last night's episode for a second time. No episode tonight? The last time my newspaper tv schedule did not list Pasion , it was wrong. Luckily , I doublechecked and saw it. Ric really knows how to write a letter. I used to keep Hub's love letters that he wrote to me when he was in the Navy in a little wooden keepsake box that belonged to my grandmother . When we were robbed years ago, the robber took the little box because it had a tiny heart lock on it so he thought that there was something he wanted inside. As he drove down the road, he threw out Hub's letters. Luckily, some neighbors found 2 of them , recognized the names, and returned them to me. However, most of the letters were lost forever along with the little wooden keepsake box that was one of the only things I had to remember my sweet grandmother. Camila will keep that letter forever. I also loved Ric giving her his pocket watch and telling her that it was his life and his time. Soooo romantic. I love this guy...I love this show. Hats off to the writers.~~~Mad Bess/Susanlynn, hopeless romantic

Thank you Margaret!

Man, that Ricardo guy sure writes a pretty letter!

Rita & Ursula - buddies? I wouldn't count on it, Rita. Watch your back. (Not to mention your big mouth.)

Oh fudge! No Pasion tonight??

Mad Bess, something similar happened to me - I had a piggybank that my great-grandmother had given me. The only "valuables" inside were relatively recent, non-rare pennies that my father had collected from faraway lands when he was in the Navy. The robbers probably had to smash the bank to get the useless coins out, too. :(

I guess when robbers see old-looking things, they assume that they will be stuffed with riches. On the contrary, I store my "riches" in the most mundane-looking manner possible. I never thought I'd have to hide a piggy-bank, but perhaps they thought the contents were as old as the bank!

They also took my Apple ImageWriter II, which in those days cost three times as much as we would now pay for a decent color inkjet printer. :)

Great recap, Margaret, thanks!
I was crying with Cami when she embraced her best friends - very powerful sceene, and definitely the best friends one could ever dream for!

Now we know the original connection to Foreman - he taught Ric everything related to piracy and how to be a captain. No way Ric ever is going to put him down for pardon from the Rey.

Paco, little scout, he is always in a wrong place and in a wrong time! How many more left for him?

Over all everything is going in much faster pace the before with more action and pasión in every episode.

Eve from Cleveland

It was so jarring to hear Justo talking with Ophelia and as you translated it Margaret:
"Justo says that he knows that she’s not happy about it but she should think about how this is a good thing for him."
Why thats exactly how Justo is responding to his daughter! Camila is not happy about separating from Ricardo BUT IT IS A GOOD THING FOR HIM (Justo). I remember the look of relief when that judge told Justo the debt had been paid and although everybody knew she wasn't REALLY married that sort of stuff happens with rich gentlemen. Justo stopped hanging his head in shame at that point.
I am exasperated by this adult. I can barely wait for Camila to get away hopeing she doesn't have him come to visit to soon or to long.

I took that to mean "it's a good thing for Santiago." No?

Julie~~~Que lastima ...re: your piggybank. The same robbers [a father and 13 year old son ...the wife/mother was the driver of the getaway car] also took my entire jewelry box [not much of real value there except Hub's and my class rings and a gold charm bracelet with 3 charms]..the rest was cosume jewelry]. They also took my baby's banks [she was 2 months old] which had only a few coins in them and my wedding silverware and chest. With the insurance money, we bought 2 chairs which we needed more than the jewelry and silverware. So far, Hub has not sat sown to rewrite the letters, but he does leave me notes occaisionally [''Sweetpea, I'm playing golf. See you about 6 pm. Love, xxx Mike''] ...the notes are just not the same as those lost letters . I don't save the notes, but I guess I should because I'm not expecting a letter from him any time soon. P.S. I had a friend who was a local cop who knew exactly who stole my stuff and told me not to expect to get anything back because the guy always drove straight to NYC to sell his loot and buy drugs. The guy was caught for another robbery and hung himself in jail. The End

Si Julie. Justo did mean good for Santiago and as Santi's mother she should think of it that way.
But the irony to me is as Cami's father he is not thinking for her to get who she loves is a good thing for her. He's thinking of himself, its a good thing for him Justo.

Ah, I get it, Capt. Bonney. D'oh, I'm not so swift on a Friday afternoon. :)

That ceremony was way more that I would have expected considering how the heir was generated. It showed also how power can make hipocrites of us all.
As usual Queen Rita was striking. I mean she is still a snake when it comes to her sister. Will Camila never stop reaching to touch that rattler? She bites her everytime!!!

Great recap Margaret, so much detail, especially on the letter was nice.

Justo doesn't qualify for father of the year award. He's all about saving his face. cpt. bonney morgan, you are so on the mark with your comments. I was thinking the same, so that means I'm right too...

Thank you SO much, Margaret, for the recap. Missed the show & man, I'm really sorry but you filled your description with so much detail (including Ric's entire letter...wow! I am impressed) that I feel like I didn't miss much but the visuals.

Ric is not only a hot, suave, dimpled, horseman but he's a writer??? OMG...I am totally in love. Is there rehab for Ric-aholics?

Saintly, please behave & get your head out of your nether regions. Justo, dude, don't be so narrow minded & let Cami be happy. Lis, all I can say is HA HA HA HA!!!!!

Cami is preggers...finally! We all knew it was coming.

LOVE this show! Thanks again for the awesome recap. I hope it's on tonight...it goes so well with my Friday night glass of wine.
:-)

Margaret what a great recap. I feel spoiled by all the talent and generous expenditure of time. And what fun it is to come here and hash it out all over again.

Mad Bess, (so sorry your things are lost forever), but it sure sounds like an episode from a telenovela what happened to them.

Cami was awfully close to the Tree of the Buried Letter last night when she had her case of the upchucks. After seeing greedy gloating grrrrrrRita waltzing around in her fine duds smirking to all and sundry, I was so ready for it to resurrect.

And now that we've learned the chief port of call for our estimable samurai's mercantile adventures is Nueva Orleans, you can bet we'll see Claudio again. I'm sure they had to wait for Carla's son to finish out the term at school so they could tie up this loose end

ah, I can hardly wait to see how they resolve all this!

LaFont was muy impactado when Jorge said what he did about giving Santiago what he wants - from the look of it, he was working on a plan to become the new Senor of San Fernando ... possibly after hastening Jorge on his way to the afterlife (wherever he's going to end up!). Now, with a young healthy heir, any such plan isn't going to work. Maybe he'll do away with Rita and try to marry Santiago to Manuela. And he's going to take out some of that frustration on Lisabeta (I have no pity for her). The marriage won't last long ... but it'll seem like an eternity to her!

You'd think Santiago could have washed - or just combed - his hair for the ceremony. Is this his way of asserting that he's still the same old Santiago, regardless of how he's dressed? Still clinging to the green scarf ... the wardrobe department must have bought a gross of them to keep one on him for the entire telenovela.

And Rita's already started on her campaign to get back at everyone who hasn't given her the consideration she thinks she deserves. And having it made public that Camila was living with a man she wasn't married to - she's loving every hateful minute.

And Paco ... sigh ... is he TRYING to kill his grandfather? Perhaps they're working on a new, different, ending, where PACO is the evil mastermind behind everything!

Toddson

Another important topic: What has happened to Ascanio o o o's hair? It even looked a little greasy especially in the scene with Jimena telling him Cami was pregnant. Did he change salons in San Fernando, to Santi's? Does he spend all his personal hygiene time ironing the sleeves on his white poofy shirt? I know it has to get dirty when he's writing. There is water to wash his hair, it's outside, he's living at the mill. I miss the cute little ponytail. What, me shallow? Obviously, love Ascanio o o (Marcelo) a little too much.

Thanks for the great recap, Margaret. I missed most of last night. Mad Bess, Julie, sorry about the loss of such precious things. That's horrible.

I was robbed once while in college and since we were broke college students there was nothing to steal except an old boom box. Whoever robbed us did take all of my underwear out of their drawer and arrange them in a circle in my bedroom and from the pile of ashes and six inches of pot smoke hanging at the ceiling spent some time in the middle of the little Stonhenge made of my panties. The cops couldn't stop laughing and took lots of crime scene photos.

Okay, at the risk of becoming the most unpopular person here, I thought Camilla telling Ascanio she needed him and he shouldn't leave was rather selfish. He has done so much for her and her family. Yes, she has had a tough go of it lately and his timing may not have been the best, but she didn't even ask why he wanted to move or anything. It was just no I need you and I miss Ricardo. I just don't think that's fair. He's done too much for her and her family to be held emotionally hostage by her for the rest of his life. I hope she soon looks past her own troubles and asks Ascanio about his.

That said, I can't wait to Lis get married and gets exactly what she has been dishing out and then some.

MinMN

Lisabeta is going to discover what real misery is - especially if she continues to believe that Ricardo is dead.

Now ... LaFont is determined to marry her. Will he, um, consummate the marriage right away or will he leave Lisabeta in torment waiting for him to put his paws on her?

And wouldn't it be entertaining if he spent, squandered, or hid away HER money, didn't consummate the marriage, and left her in much the same position she put Camila in? he he he

Toddson

Wow, it's only been a couple of hours since I posted and already 15comments. Thanks all!

Yes, from the context, Justo was saying it would be good for Santiago, not for himself. He's a businessman after all, and if he were in Santiago's shoes, he would see it as a great opportunity for the young man to increase his wealth and connections. Frankly, I was a little put off by Ofelia's response. All along, we have been thinking that she was worried about Santiago's virtue getting corrupted by evil degenerate DJ. Her responses lately have boiled down to that she is just worried about being left alone. Obviously the situation is more embarassing for her but she's got her own interests here that she really isn't clear about.

Agnes--I noticed that too--that Cami leaned against THE VERY TREE that Rita buried her letter under. At this point though, even if it was on vellum, it would have disintegrated by now. I am guessing that either Paco has already found it and hidden it (and we'll see it in flashbacks) Or Rita confesses while in a rage or afraid for her life.

Things are happening fast--there's been a major development every night.

Wonderful recap - thanks!

Ric looks good with a beard, doesn't he, although I thought he couldn't have grown one that quickly! The fight wasn't that long ago.

Rita, dear, ever heard of the old saying, "You can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear"? That's you!

Poor Lis - she's in for a very miserable life. If LaFont takes her cane away, she'll truly be helpless. It just hit me that he'd do that to her, like he locks Manuela in the dark closet.

At last, Cami is preñada! If only Ric could get that message via ESP or whatever, it would surely help him.

The ONLY reason I'm ok with the show not being on tonight is the NCAA basketball Sweet 16. Hook 'em Horns!

I think the lack of ponytail is the problem with Ascanio's hair. Without it, it doesn't look nice, plus it's hiding more of his excellent face.

Toddson, I think you're right about Lafont. He had been hoping for a "promotion."

I also think he is seriously underestimating Jorge, mistaking his laid-back demeanor for weakness or apathy. Instead, Jorge saves his good stuff for when it really matters. If Lafont tries any funny stuff, Jorge will set him straight on this matter.

Margaret - what an interesting idea, that Paco found the letter already. In a way it would make a lot of sense. He was so upset when he found out that the other letter he found had caused some much trouble. Of course he wouldn't be eager to show off another acquisition.

However, at some point his reading skills will improve, and then if he understands what the letter says, he's going to be even more upset!

I really want them to show Paco as an adult asking, what the heck was going on when I was a child? Hopefully by then they could laugh at it instead of him feeling bad.

MinMN, yes, Cami is being selfish with asking Ascanio to stay. But, Ascanio and Jimena are more her family than her natural family and she is in a bad place right now. I'm sure it is only temporary.

I'm very happy that Cami is pregnant, but I don't think that Justo (or Santi!) is going to react well at all. I sure wish Ric could know.

MinMN [Is that like Min in Minn ??] ~~~Wow! A panty Stonehenge. This proves that some thieves are creative beings trying to express themselves...in addition to ripping off our things. . I'm beginning to wonder if that letter will ever resurface and if we'll ever see Claudio again. Ric does look good in a beard...as well as out of a beard...with a mustache and without a mustache...with sideburns and without sideburns...with long hair and with short hair...in clothes and....well, I could go on and on.... I'm always amazed at how Fernando can change his appearance with each role he plays. He looks very differenr in Amor Real as Manuel and in Alborada as Luis. In this novela , he has shown several different looks....all of them stunning, I must add. I wonder if he has his next telenovela lined up ? I wonder if Carla and Monica are working on another historical novela [my favs]. One lives with hope.

Margaret the marvelous!! Thanks for the fab recap, you da woman!
It looks like I may be unemployed tonight. Just in case I get skunked again with bad listings, I will check in to make sure. I love this show so much, I can't stand missing an episode.

Else wise I will spend the rest of the evening laughing about the stonehenge of panties. I wonder if the thief had enough intelligence to see the humor in his own creation?

Susanlynn, I don't know if you saw Ladron que Robo a Ladron, last year's movie he (what other he? Fernando of course) but HE was simply divine in short hair and modern dress. He looked better in a convertible than any mortal has a right to look.

Ooohhh Cheryl NewMex. It came today from Netflix (Ladron que Robo a Ladron) and that's what I'm a gonna be watching tonight. I had ordered it on the recommendation of somebody here (you, maybe?) Thank G-d I'l get my Fernando fix one way or another. Such good timing! Thankyou US Postal Service.

Thanks so much Margaret for this great recap. I hope Ric gets well soon...

I know Paco keeps messing up but I'm still hoping he works through his trauma and finds that note tia Camila wrote. Watching Rita smirking last night just made me think how that smirk need to be removed from her face quickly.

Mad Bess, Julie and MinMN sorry to hear about those robberies.

Toddson - ITA with you about Liz. Al will probably take her money and torment her with his husbandly demands. I just hope Tia Fran gets a bit more comeuppance as well.

MadBess, yeah, I'm another Marg. and I'm in Minnesooota. That's how we say it here. I'm also a teacher. There seems to be a few of us lurking about here. As for my brush with crime. From the amount of ashes, rolling paper and smoke hanging at the ceiling he took his time with his art, but may have been too stoned to really appreciate it. It was only one guy, too. My room mate caught him leaving, but was afraid to chase him. Even if the artist in our residence didn't appreciate his own efforts, everyone else seems too. If you've ever seen Spinal Tap, it was about as big as their Stonehenge, but made out of my never worn again panties. The policemen were great, but they could not stop laughing. I was mortified, but now, I appreciate the humor.

I bought Ladron que Robo a Ladron and it's really good, very funny, and Fernando looks hot!!! Now to the show LOL. That letter Ric wrote to Justo who I will now call InJusto was beautiful. Ric's love for Camila is beautiful. And now she's going to have his baby. I hope somehow Ric will know that his wish to have a family is coming true. Rita is certainly smug and couldn't wait to rub it in Camila's face. Arrogance always leads to a downfall. And it's time for that letter that she buried under the tree to resurface. I hope now that sanctimonious Santi has been acknowledged by his father that he doesn't let his newfound power corrupt him. With Ric gone for the moment sanctimonious Santi may try to use the situation to his advantage. Especially since InJusto thinks that this will help Camila get over Ric. As if. I can see why Camila needs Ascanio and Jimena around her. They're more her family than her own family.

Superb recap, Margaret! WELL done. You are so appreciated.

Ric's letter was just the BEST. Man, I cried. C'mon, Ri-car-do. Fight those wounds. Don't you dare give up.

I am dumbfounded by Cami not giving Justo Ric's letter to read, or making him listen while she read it aloud, when Justo started in on Ric's reputation. It might not do any good (it's damn near impossible to change a father's mind when he thinks his little girl has been slighted--they are SO emotional), but it certainly wouldn't hurt. What are you waiting for, girl?? She is on the right track when it comes to going after Ric, though. Go get him!

Good grief, mad bess/susanlynn. Talk about a heartless bastard. The story of your husband's letters makes my heart hurt. :(

Julie--good call about Rita and Ursula. LOL! Did y'all see the look on Ursula's face, behind Rita's back, as Rita was preening to someone about her good fortune? Whoresula's expression said, "Yeah, go on thinking you're somebody now if it makes you feel good, bi-yatch. You can't even shine my boots."

And speaking of The GritEater, WHAT was up with her and Lis out in the street after the ceremony? It was like Pasion meets The Stepford Wives. They were both moving around and tilting their heads and preening to the masses like their joints had stopped working, all mechanical and stiff, like robots. And their expressions, all frozen and wide-eyed, with nothing moving but their mouths as they smiled and talked. That was some weird stuff. I just cracked up.

My DVR guide says that there are two hours of Guapos tonight... but it said that on Monday too, and I ended up missing Pasion that night (it lied). So I'll be tuning in tonight to see for myself.

Let's all cheer for... Paco! I think he dug that letter up a while back, and put it somewhere. I PRAY he did.

Dear Saintly,
So far, so good. You've gotten yourself in a good position to help the town not have to fear Manceras any more. I know you're just a common guy, and it's kind of uncomfortable, but hang in there. You apologized to Ascanio for being a dingbat and told him he was right. You've helped Cami get out of Lis's clutches, and even delivered the papers without insisting she give "it" up first, or even trying to jump her bones afterwards. Whenever you see her, you say hello, then you leave her alone. (You know she belongs with Ric, don't you?) Good boy. I'm really proud of you. Now don't $#&@! it up, okay? -- DQ of 7Cs

LisaBUTTa is so screwed (figuratively, and very soon will be literally... yuh-uck).

Anon 4:47, now I know it wasn't just me. I was eyeballing Ascanio's hair too. It doesn't just look awfully sticky, it's doing this unnatural sticking-out-thing around his collar. I don't want him looking like that!

Le Bouffy will consummate that marriage before the ink is dry, is my guess. He doesn't appear to have had any for quite a while, and Lis is a delectable dish on the outside. Maybe that will cool him off a bit, because every episode his rage seems to amp up a notch. I wouldn't be surprised if the lunatic ended up disposing of Whorehey and Sofi for blocking his way to power with Santi. Or some other such nonsense.

Things seem to be coming down to the wire, everybody. But with us in the 70-episodes, and there are over 90, there's still a lot that can happen.

LOL @ piratebabe! InJusto. Perfect.

It's for sure that we're getting pre-empted tonight. :( They just said so during Guapos.

That'll give me a chance to catch up and watch yesterday's tonight, but I'm still bummed - I was hoping to make it a double-feature.

Thank you for the great recap! No Pasion tonight? Wish we had two hours of it instead of Guapos! Yeah, I hated gRita's smirk. That dress that Sophia gave her was frumpy compared to the beautiful ones that Cami and Jimena used to wear. Just wait gRita....you'll get yours!

Yeah, what's with Ascanio's hair? It looks like a different wig without the ponytail. It looked better before.

Those stories about burgularies reminded me of my single days when I was a poor elementary school teacher living in an efficiency in the late 70's. The entire complex ended up being robbed by the newly hired managers by the name of Shnook. (That last name alone was suspicious.} They stole tenant's color tv's ,stereos, money, etc. They moved my little black and white TV but left it...took a silver tourquoise ring but left my few measly gold things...and that was it! Our apartment even made the news! I was puzzled that they didn't take anything else, but hey, back then teachers made next to nothing! No panties taken...

Funny they moved your B&W TV - the same thing happened with my hi-fi set. It was 1989... everyone in the world had a CD player... I still had a record player with an 8-track tape player in it. :)

(I tried to think of a way to pretend this was somehow related to Pasion, but couldn't come up with one... oh right, the box with the letter in it... yeah, Cami should have just given it to her dad.)

Cheryl~~~I have not seen ''Ladron...'' I wonder if Blockbuster has it and if it has English subtitles??? I am bummed that Pasion is not on tonight. Maybe I'll rewatch Alborada and check Fernandito out as Luis and Marcelo as Marcos. That never gets old. Or maybe I'll check out Fuego en la Sangre on Youtube.~~~~~~~~ P.S. I get the dry heaves when I read the word ''consummate'' in the same sentence as Lafont. I am afraid the Lafont is going to consummate the wig right off Lisabetha....and maybe her little doll, tambien.

I just looked at imdb where it says that Anais is Manuela... you hit the link for Anais and there is just no way it's correct.

Seriously, tell me this is Manuela...

...actually I think the listing on IMDB is correct - that Anais was born in Mexico. It's just the photo that's wrong. The Anais in the photo is the one from Cuba, correct?

Margaret: Wonderful recap and full of all the juicy details.

"[We see a flashback of a younger Foreman in adorable flaxen braids making this demand on a a beach—.....]" LOL! He looked to me like a Ken doll with Barbie's braids!

Ascanio has been looking like a greaser more and more lately. Bummer! Also I wondered where Jime got the peasant duds so quickly and where she stashed the pretty gowns if there's no room at the miller's?

That trip of Lis' as she and Bouffy were leaving for the fiesta and the look of exasperation and impatience he gave the people around him was the only thing that made me still feel a twinge of pity for Lis' condition. Otherwise, what's waiting for her behind closed doors at Frankenstein Manor is more than deserved for what she's put everybody through! As for Tía Fran, that woman has a huge stone encapsulated with ice where her heart is supposed to be. I really, really, REALLY hope they don't shortchange us when it comes to those three getting their come-uppance.

Mad bess/susanlynn: I rented "Ladrón" from Family Video and my daughter rented one from Blockbuster. Both had English and Spanish subtitles. Fer is even more gorgeous on the big screen than he is on t.v.! It just takes your breath away!

CherylNewMex & Pirate Babe: thanks for the Ladron reviews. I saw the DVD in Wal Mart (go figure) & was hesitant to buy it cuz I've never seen it. Guess I'll have to go to Blockbuster to rent it cuz I just gotta see Fernando in that convertable!

Anon 6:24: "Spinal Tap" is one of my fav movies. My favorite scenes in that movie was when the band got lost trying to get to the stage & the bass player getting stuck in the pod (LOL!)

Anya: I'm cheering on the Horns too even though I'm a Sooner fan but I live in TX also. Hopin the OK State girls can pull off an upset Saturday against LSU. Doubtful but one never knows.

O.K. on to Pasion

Poor little Paco. His timing is so impecible. But how can you get mad at that adorable kid? I too think he'll dig up that letter Grrita buried. I grew up with 2 brothers and a lot of male cousins. You would be amazed what boys will find digging up a yard. I know. I've seen it with my own eyes when I was growing up.

Yeah Cami's preggers!! Hey maybe she can toss her cookies on Grrita?!

Ah Ric. Sigh. Nuf said.

Here's a little diddy I made up: "Liz & Bouffy sittin in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-eewwww".

On Anais--the reggeton singer is from the Dominican Republic, I think. And she has much darker skin than this Anais. I noticed this last week. There is no way they can be the same.

I don't know if imdb has the right Anais, but since the opening credits of Pasion say that Anais plays Manuela, it must be some Anais.

I guess this was Foreman's turn at the Pasión-brand Bad Hair Day. I was expecting to want to squeal and pull his braids Jimena-style, and instead, all I wanted to do was pull them out.

Rita is such a class act (or maybe just an ass act). Even in her moment of glory, she's got to get in a jab at Camila. Must be her way of making up for all the time she lost not doing it last week. Marcellino certainly seemed to be having a good time at the party, though!

As much as I want to see all our happy couples end up happily ever after, I hope we aren't headed for an Alborada-style happy ending where all the women are not only married, but pregnant. I know that was kind of the modus operandi back then, but c'mon! We've got so much variation in this novela already, surely we can have some there!

Too bad for missing episode on Friday! I wonder why they do it? Oh, well...

I found the site "www.carlaestrada.com" and when I read one of the articles ( about the book) there was an interesting quote:

"...Pudimos saludar a Fernando Colunga, Susana González y Sebastián Rulli. En especial Fernando fue envuelto por una nube de admiradoras, incluso las mismas trabajadoras en máquinas del lugar.
Colunga a pregunta expresa dejó en claro que le encantan todo tipo de mujeres: altas, chaparritas, gordas, delgaditas, morenas, güeras e incluso pelirrojas . Fue demasiado respetuoso con las damas presentes y ausentes porque dejó en claro que nunca ha sido motivo de ataques durante este tipo de encuentros con sus admiradoras"

Ladies, we all are in luck, he likes us in all shapes in colors!
Fernando, te amo!

Eve from Cleveland

Well, I watched Ladron que Robo a Ladron last night after I got fed up with the Guapos (2 hours of this?) and I gotta say it was a lot of fun. Not high-tech like Ocean's Eleven, on which it is modeled, but more fun in a way, with a slap on the wrist of the USA for its prejudice against immigrants. And, yes PaulaTX, Fernando looks divine in that red convertible. It comes complete with English subtitles (at your discretion). Watch it if you can get it.

Margaret. Excellent recap for an excellent episode! So many emotions! Please indulge me for a mintue: I was surprised at how deeply infatuated I became with Fer and Lety's love story. I ached for them to be together. The stupid new etapa with the sickening Aldo and endless lengthening left me frustrated and angry. I vowed never to watch a telenovela again. It really felt like emotional violation the way the writers/producers played with the emotions.

But Ahhhhh, Pasion! My imagination, attention and emotions are totally captured with every episode. How refreshing to have the two lovers actually able to make love and struggle together instead of one stupid misunderstanding and separation after the other or behaving like mindless marionettes in the hands of the villians. Jaime Camil's breathtaking beauty for me will never be surpassed but Fernando Colugna's face, physique, smoldering eyes, fierce fighting and passionate lovemaking have me swooning with his other vocal fans in this community! Aye! LOVE this novela. What a fine bunch of actors, not a shabby performance from anyone, so believable!

Thanks recappers and community of commentors. These stories and your "company" are a welcome respite from the challenges of the real world.

Anon 12:07 ITA. I too was frustrated with how LFMB ended when all before the Aldo interruption it was a beautiful love story. With Pasion I fell hard for Ric and Camila. The emotion, the intensity, the charisma, and the drama keeps me hooked and I especially love that the lovers are fighting to be together and won't let anyone or anything keep them apart. And the current separation of the lovers from each other isn't because of some silly misunderstanding. A refreshing change.

Amen, Pirate Babe. I didn't think this was possible that the lovers could be together against the forces of evil. And the sweet thing about it, we know there's gonna be some sho' nuff good makin' up. This is a far cry from "Love of Life", "Secret Storm" and "From These Roots" that I used to see my mama watch. Pasion has been such a satisfying experience and thanks to this community I feel a part of a warm, friendly audience being told an exciting story and improving my Spanish all at the same time. If I'd "met" you guys during LFMB maybe I wouldn't have been so traumatized!

Anywho, on another plot point, I have six brothers who collected all manner of odd stuff (so did I for that matter!) I think Paco dug up that letter a long time ago and was maybe afraid to say anything after what happened to one of his finds before. Just don't know how the revelation of gRita's plot could lead to getting her out of the picture. More excitement ahead!

Re Anais: I was recently watching the DVD of LFMB. After Lety gets that horrendous thing in her mouth (after she breaks her braces,) Carolina takes her to an event and someone called Anais is the star.(She in the one who gets her people to transform Lety into Aurora). Anais with beautiful long blonde hair, looking very pretty, is our own Manuela. So there probably are two women called Anais --one a Dominican singer and one the actress who plays Manuela.

I also recently got the DVD of AMOR REAL, which I had never seen, and watched an add-on about making the telenovela. Fernando speaks about his experience and actually gets all choked up and starts to cry. What a man!!!

I thought Ascanio was being gallant when he offered to move, so that there would be room for Jimena to stay. He's getting free room and board but no salary so it would be hard for him to move someplace else. He's a doll and I'm glad Camila told him not to leave. His hair is truly starting to look a little disheveled but with all the stress his friends put him through, it's no wonder.

I agree that ths novela is a blessing in contrast to the others where the lovers are separated by misunderstandings and they get into other relationships to try and get over one another. In this one, they are together from day one almost and struggle without everyone else interferring. I too am a Jami Camile fan. I have never seen anyone so handsome; however, Fernando is right behind him. I liked the passionte looks he gave lety. They were awesome; however, I like the way fernando looks at Camile, with love and respect and caring. I have now watched La Fea, Destilndo, I love Juan and the other one that has the theme song Antes de que te vagasddd and yet i am still mostly picking up words but rarely sentences in spanish. I also took beginner spanish and spanish 11. Does anyone else have this problem Ret

Anon 3:47. What has helped me pick up sentences is just a whole lot of listening. I don't know if I could handle these shows with Spanish I and II. I took up into the 400 level including literature, composition and linguistics classes but this was over 30 years ago! I remembered the advice of my very first Spanish teacher who said learning a new language was like laying down new railroad tracks in your mind. He suggested passive listening to build those tracks, not trying to translate, just listening. I started just having Univision on in the background while I did housework or whatever, didn't re-study any grammar. LFMB was my motivation. I missed a lot at first and my daughter (a Spanish major) had just returned from summer study in the Dominican Republic. I had her watch with me to help me understand. She eventually got hooked as well. Since summer of 2006 there has not been one day that I have not listened to several hours of Spanish: Despierta America, las noticias, commercials and, of course, novelas! LFMB, Accoralada (and one whose name I forget which came on before it) Destilando Amor and by the time I got to Pasion I was understanding everything. The only things I have trouble with are not really related to language, but rather pirate culture!

Sorry to go on so long and maybe this was not what you asked. I would put the Spanish on in the background, sometimes fall asleep on a tv program. Gradually Spanish words began to have their own meaning - untranslated - then phrases and after a while large sections of speech would flow understood into my mind. It won't hurt to learn some vocabulary and review your grammar. Find a format of spanish language that you love and let it flow. . .(Sorry for the mixed metaphor!) :-))

Anon 3:47. I decided to learn Spanish about a year and a half ago.
I listen to a Spanish language CD in my car or Spanish radio. My library card also let's me access Rosetta Stone online.
I am reading a Spanish/English book reading the Spanish part aloud.
Every day I immerse my self in the language. I go to Home Depot or Lowes and while my husband gets his stuff I am reading all the signs in Spanish.
Sometimes I just hear a few words and other times whole sentences. I like to watch first and then read here where I get gaps filled in. It just amazes me what I have learned. Though I have a long way to go I know. I would like to someday go to the school in Mexico, that someone mentioned here some time. I think it would be a great experience.
I love this show and wish I had not caught up yet. The story is a whirlwind, something happening all the time. I hate waiting, but really want to stay with the group here ,as it adds so much to my experience.
I really like the historical setting novelas. Does anyone know more historical novelas, besides Alborada and Amor Real?
I peeked at Fuego en la Sangre and it is one that is another version of Pasion De Gavilanes which I bought after LFMB. Pasion De Gavilanes was good. This version (Fuego en la Sangre) does have Marcia, and Carolina from LFMB. I didn’t really enjoy watching so much Yo Soy Betty la Fea, after watching LFMB>
I also bought , but haven’t watched La Antorcha Encendida. Has anyone else seen it?
Is there somewhere where Telenovela’s are rated, like a ***** five star absolutely must see novela to a *1 star don’t waste your time?
Oh and I peeked at the first episode of Las Tontas no van al Cielo and it looks like it could be really good. To get to see Jaime again. Sigh!

I finally watched this this morning, and I agree with Sun 2:48 - Jimena expressed concern that Justo's house would be too crowded for her to move in, and that's when Ascanio said he was thinking of getting some other accommodation. He didn't say he was thinking of going out of town, or anything drastic like that, so I don't see why it was selfish of Cami to ask him to stay at Justo's. He hadn't shown any interest in leaving before that conversation, so surely he was just saying that for Jimena's sake. Cami was letting him know that he is more than welcome to stay there.

Patty B, I don't know if there's a telenovela rating site, but I'd think twice about relying on it if there were. Before Pasion started, there were lots of rumors that it sucked and that nobody in Mexico liked it. That it was boring, with terrible acting, cheap sets, etc.

I don't know what really happened in Mexico, but we all seem to be enjoying it. (Or if someone isn't, then I have to wonder why they're still reading about/watching it.)

Anyway, if you want to watch something that's boring, with terrible acting, cheap sets, etc. you could certainly find something more suitable than Pasion.

So, you would really have to take those star ratings with a big grain of salt!

Thank you anon for the support on Spanish. My frustation is that I did the two classes, I have many spanish songs in my cd's and i sing with them, along with the spanish translations. I am emerged in this to the point of sometimes when reading something to my clients, I say the word in spanish and can't even think how to say it in Englis. I have John Grays Men are from mars books, in spanish and I had a tutor for over a year who spoke in spanish one hour a week. that helped me and I understood her, but I don't understand the novelas. Could it be the music in the background? Or the fact that they are talking to each other and the tutor was facing me??? OOORRRRR my age of 65. There is some research on how people have to learn a language by a certain age in childhood. Or maybe that is for someone that has no other language skills.

Are you comparing your skill level to what it was two years ago?

Or are you comparing yourself to someone who was born in Mexico and has been speaking the language natively for a few dozen years? ;-)

You really gotta give yourself a break!

Anon 07:53: I was very impatient and couldn't wait for Pasion to continue so I decided to watch it on Youtube. I spend 3 days and watched almost non-stop 30 capitulos - without closed captions. Few days later I realized that my Spanish comprehension improved dramatically - I can understand news, songs, telenovelas, magazines almost without any problems.
So may be the movie marathon can be the boost for you as well.
( I studied Spanish actively for about a year but the last half year I only watched my telenovelas.)

Julie, I was looking for star ratings hoping to know how other people liked before I buy more older ones. Most of the ones I have bought (Alborada, Amor Real, etc) is because some people have mentioned how good they were.
I love Pasion and have from the beginning.
Anonymous 07:53:00 PM- I don’t think we get too old to learn. I don’t believe you can’t teach on old dog a new trick. It keeps our minds active.

Patty B. UT Catching up to anon 7:53 fast!

Howdy =)

Let's see which historical novelas I can remember about:

La Traicion (currently on Telemundo) (1880s)
Zorro: La Espada y La Rosa (1820s)
Corazon Salvaje (Can't remember, but it's about a pirate!)
Bodas de Odio (early 1900s until about 1911 or so)
Si, Mi Amor (Can't remember)
Lagrimas Negras (can't remember)
Gabriel y Gabriela (the first 3rd in the 50s)
La Pasion de Isabela (1940s)
El Pecado de Oyuki (1940s Japan)
La Sucesora (1920s, it's Brazilian)
La Esclava Isaura (1840s, also Brazilian)

Some of these are available in the telenovela website folks recommend (can't remember the name) but would be entirely in Spanish (dunno if the Brazilian ones are in the original Portugese or the dubbed Spanish) and you can also check Amazon for the abbreviated versions with subtitles. You can also look at movies.

Good luck,
M
