Guapos Friday 4/11/08 Tonight on Survivor Mexico City, team Skanky makes an alliance. Mili gains immunity in the hair-pulling challenge

Sheesh, another filler episode. They should be doing better for Fridays--no? Sorry to post this late, but I had a computer malfunction yesterday.

Alex sees Gamuza in the street. He is waiting for Mili. He says lots of people are sick in the barrio, particularly Chiquis, his "cuate" (guy, pal).

Mili is back to kicking in the door at Andrea's apartment. Karla tries to tell Hugo that Mili is banging the door at the wrong apartment. She is looking for her husband and suspects him of having an affair. Problem--Hugo recognizes Mili's voice, but doesn't remember more than that.

In the barrio, the grandfather of Chiquis is worried that his little boy is dying and he hasn't a cent to pay. Alex calls a doctor friend who gives antibiotics for a severe infection. There's some interplay with Gamuza's bad father again. They confide in Alex that their local clinic and school are flooded or destroyed by big rainstorms. They are having a festival the next day, and they invite Alex.

Damien yells at Bobby for screwing up. If he does it again, he'll cut off his head--metaphorically speaking.

Mili tells the girls that she found Hugo at the house of the grenuda (skank). I wish I knew how to enter the tildas and accents, but I don't. Grenuda has a tilda.

Alex tells Granny about the clinic and the festival. She is proud of him for helping. She agrees to go with him the next day. She says he should not tell Connie and Luci.

Lina is talking to Rocky. Val comes over and demands that Rocky get the car. She tells him to stop being an igualada and obey. Lina scolds Val for playing with the feelings of Booby and Morgan. Val says Lina is an igualada too, like her friend Mili, the mugrosucha. (another expression for lowlife).

Horacio goes on a date with Socorro. I'll compress all those scenes into one. After the dinner, they come back to her little room. He wants to kiss her and more, but she says she is not ready. She has never been with a man since her "incident." He says he will wait till she is ready. Later he proposes. They kiss. Karla walks in on them. Horacio leaves the kitchen. Karla excoriates her mother's choice of a gardener with no future. Socorro defends him--he's the sweetest man alive and he really cares for her.

Alex talks to Granny about missing Hugo. He tells her that Mili has spoken to Hugo but no more. He says Hugo is a farsante (faker).

Val goes over to see Snouty (Pilar). Snouty rehashes the incident at the cabin. If Bobby hadn't stopped her she could have killed Alex. She is sorry for what she did, but she is still outraged at they way Alex treated her--it shouldn't be allowed. You know what else should not be allowed? The hideous black and red flowered negligee she is wearing. She concludes by acknowledging glycerin tearfully that Mili and Alex really love each other, and they shouldn't be separated.

Karla tells Hugo that she's going over to visit her mother. He's all hot up to go, but she puts him off. He agrees but jokingly asks her to buy him some striped pajamas to wear in his prison cell.

Mili asks Granny permission to look for Hugo. She tells her she saw him, and he was clearly kidnapped. How could that be, asks Granny? Mili says she knows the sin but not the sinner. Alex comes in and hears that she saw Hugo.

Damien is making some kind of deal on the phone. He calls Beltran and leaves a message. Andrea comes in, and Damien wants to know how Karla came to be living at the skank's house.
Why--what's the problem--you're sorry your girlfriend left you? He says that Andrea and Karla should get along well--they both sleep around for money. Anyway, he realizes that Karla is a problem and Andrea should keep her away.

He asks her to have Connie sign blank papers for future use. She refuses. She says leave it to her--she has Connie eating out of her hand. She drives him crazy in the bedroom. He wants to know why she's so confrontational. 'Cause it bothers her that he wants to use her. Takes one to know one.

Granny and Alex go to the festival and vow to rebuild the clinic and school. Cheers all around.

I'm skipping ahead, but the next day, Granny and Alex go to work on the project. Granny sits at a small table and takes inventory of the lumber. When they seem to be running short, they vow to pay the rest.

Peralta comes in and leers at Andrea. She looks revolted when his back is turned but is all smiles to his face. Damien calls him in to his office. He reveals to Damien that he had that little fling and asks that Damien keep it from Peralta's wife. They discuss the interference with Connie's campaign. Peralta warns Damien to watch over Andrea.

Mili enters the reception area. She wants Andrea to give up Hugo. Andrea plays dumb. Anyway, why should Mili care--she left Hugo standing at the altar. N0, Mili says. Alex took her. Andrea should not change the subject--she saw Hugo at Andrea's building. One thing here--it looks like skanky is not even bothering to be interested in Alex anymore.

Mili and Andrea keep yelling. Mili grabs Andrea and says that if she doesn't tell her what she wants to know she'll find out herself. Connie hears the hubbub and comes out. Andrea utters the fateful words we heard on the avances: Get your daughter off me! Impactada looks all around. Well, here's the unsurprising resolution. Mili says, What did you say? I'm the boss's daughter? Hah, he should be so lucky. Connie tells Mili to go into his office.

He asks Andrea what she was saying. She says that she didn't know what she was saying. Ignore her stupidity. He says, no, it sounded like you know exactly what you were saying. No, no, she says--why? Is she your daughter? Since he won't admit it, they come to a standoff. He thought bubbles that he'll have to watch her more closely.

He then tells Mili not to do such things in the office again. She promises but asks if she can wait by the exit to do them there. He chuckles to himself. I liked that look, but I'm still disappointed in Connie.

Given his discussion with Peralta, Damien asks Andrea if she now considers herself the Mati Hari of her day. He always knew she was trash, going from bed to bed, but business is business. He now has more leverage over her, so he again demands that she help him get the blank papers signed. She says no, Peralta won't tell. Wanna bet, asks Damien. Don't be stupid, he says, we have to work together.

Karla catches Horacio in the yard. She tells him to keep away from her mother, or her mother will lose her daughter. Poor Socorro.

At the girls' dorm, Mili tells the girls that she saw Hugo. Gloria thinks she must have seen wrong. No, says Lina. Mili has good eyesight. She eats carrots, and carrots are good for the eyes. Have you ever seen a rabbit with glasses? Bah-dum-pum.
Anyway, they realize this explains why Karla left her job.
My DVR cuts off here.

Bravo: NinaK loved the way you cut out all the fillers. Wish the producers would do that, too.

From lower Ala

I actually find this novela has fewer fillers than most and keeps me on my toes so i don't miss anything.

Absolutely loved Connie scolding Mili like a father and then laughing when she made her exit. I've never seen Connie laugh before which is a sad commentary on his life and as a matter of fact almost everyone else in Casa Belmonte. Such a gloomy miserable bunch.

Karla once again reveals what a bruja she is. Telling Horatio if her marries her mother she will lose her daughter. Indeed poor Socorra who has actually never had much of a daughter in the first place. I wonder if by the end St. Mili will be able to save that relationship as she seems determined to do with everyone else.

That scene with Peralta and Damian almost made me gag when sleazy P talks about what a savage the skank is in bed.

What is with the glycerine queen suddenly saying Al and Mili should be together. It's like watching The Exorcist and seeing Linda Blair head spin around the way Miss Snouty switches gears. I don't believe her for one second.

Al and Regina in the barrio - a nice touch designed I'm sure to make us believe that Al is a nice caring man (other than bagging everything in skirts) to make him worthy of St. Milagros but he has a long way to go.

Oops Nina, One thing you missed - in the previews Connie is talking to Regina an makes some slighting remark I think about Al and she hauls off and clocks him. Should be V E R Y interesting to see what happens next.

Thanks Nina! I guess we all have different reasons for watching and therefore different barometers for how the show is going. I'm among those that so far don't see a lot of filler, just more aspects of the characters shown to create a bigger picture.

I always cringe at Karla's attitude with her mother, especially since Soccoro is such a sweet woman. I can't help but think Karla may be damned for the dreaded telenovela sin of dissing her mother!

Whatever Karla's ultimate fate, it looks like she won't be able to keep up the lie with Hugo much longer. On to the next scam!

Sorry, I forgot to sign my previous post (anon 4:23)

I think you guys have a good point about what I called filler. The show does zip along quickly, so what happens does move the story along.

Howdy =)

Andrea does tell Mili that she "gave up" on Alex so he could be happy with Mili (the fact that he wants nothing to do with Andrea is totally beside the point).

The previews also show the following: a) Al asking Mili what she plans to do once she finds Hugo, marry him? She says she doesn't know and runs off crying. b) Hugo drawing Mili in her tomboy clothes and trying to figure out where he's seen this woman who's so etched in his brain. c) Mili cleaning the windows on a Taxi and seeing Hugo in it and him recognizing her as the woman he drew.

I missed Mili thinking that Hugo was kidnapped. I just thought she knew someone was hiding him. If it's the former, it actually makes sense for her to look for Hugo. If it's the latter, I think Mili should follow Damian's cue and let Hugo blow off some steam on his own (so Karla can marry him and he can stop stalking Mili). Although Pilar and Hugo are hurt, Mili and Alex have done their own share of suffering, and would suffer with the people they don't love. The most sensible thing would be for Mili to think of herself for a change and try to have a real relationship with Al. Of course, Mili is not necessarily the most sensible one here.

I can just see it now: Horacio swore to Socorro that he would never leave her, and now he's going to do just that so she won't loose her daughter. Hopefully he'll confide in Rocky or Lina who can't keep a secret, and Socorrito will not return to her eternal distrust of men.

Margarita, you are right. I don't think Mili said Hugo was kidnapped--I made an error. I was reading more into it--she said someone was hiding him. Thanks for pointing that out, as I was a bit confused as to what Mili thought. I figure if she thought someone was hiding him, it's more like a kidnapping because otherwise he could leave.

Thanks NinaK...I love your sense of humor (remark about Snouty's awful sleepwear) and compressing scenes....the flipping back and forth between story lines sometimes makes for a difficult recap.
There are several different ways to do tildas and accents, depending on your computer. I'd been told several ways that didn't work and then Sylvia (Juan recapper) directed me to another
site and Eureka! I could do it. Google Spanish accents and you'll find several different systems...one of them will work for you.

Thanks NinaK – your recap was breezy and fun and nailed all the important points.

I liked this episode since it moved the Socorro/Horacio relationships from just little humorous bits where he pays her compliments to more serious ground. I was wondering why Socorro looked so plain on their date (no lipstick, seemed like) when she looks so lovely in her kitchen garb.

It also seemed to signal a greater role for Bobby whose main job for a while now seemed to be to be a straight-up guy and to hover in the background until he was needed. He sure got a dose of Belmonte reality when Damien told him that all Bobby’s ideas automatically become his (Damien’s).

Karla is turning out to be one of my favorite characters on this show. I love how she is so focused, goal-oriented and pragmatic in her approach to getting where she wants to go. She doesn’t whine, she just gets going on her next plan. I hope when awards time comes the actress gets considered – she’s truly outstanding in her part.

I don’t remember (and I should!) how Andrea found out Mili is Connie’s daughter. Can somebody fill me in on that bit I’ve forgotten?

Poor sheltered Alex – he just noticed that there are poor folks living in squalor and need? Even the English princes have grasped that. I don’t live in Mexico and I’m well aware of the poverty there – so where’s he been? The scene of him in his hard hat and all the huddled masses cheering the rich boy come to save them made me cringe. And there was Regina with her diamond brooch and earrings – not a diplomatic choice. Too much noblesse oblige for my tastes!

Maggie...Andrea overheard the telephone conversation between the Padre and Constancio recently where the Padre referred to Mili as his daughter. She didn't even have to hide behind a little bitty tree to hear it!...just kept the line open after she transferred the call.

Thank you judyb!!

Interesting comment about Al seeming to be oblivious of the poverty around him. I don't care how rich you are in Mexico City you can not avoid seeing the grinding poverty even if you are living in the ritziest parts of town. The rich Belmontes go out and drive to work and Al has certainly seen the people trying to make a living washing windows of cars stopped at signals. I guess he just never figured out that these people must live somewhere and that it wouldn't be posh. As for Regina and her diamonds. I don't think she though for a minute to dress down on her mercy run. Same reason. The Belmontes don't appear to have a common sense gene. Except for Mili of course who must have inherited all of them.

OT has anyone seen part of El Pantera? I amused myself checking it out last night. It has the usual familiar faces from novelas but is shot in a very dark, artsy noir style. The lead is like some kind of hired gun who is trying to make the streets safe (I think). It looked like a cross between the Godfather and the Sopranos with a lot of action taking place in a brothel and dealing with blackmailing and sex tapes. Anyway I was just in time to see our Bobby, slightly less nerdy than in Guapos get beaten by a thug and then shot to death in front of the hero (the gorgeous Diego from Alborada). Interestingly our Braulio is also in it, looking much less prissy and swish, open shirt, masses of gold chains and the most awful sideburns ever. It was a trip.

Is El Pantera a movie, or part of a series? I wish I'd looked at it a bit!

Gee, I'd like to see Pantera also. Is it a weekly series? I can't figure out what's happening with Hoy, either. I finally started watching it and it disappeared. I'd contact my friend who works for Univision, but she's overloaded with programming for the Pope's visit.

NinaK successfully tests adding a tilda.

Pantera looked more like a series not so much either a novela or a movie which is what I originally thought it was. It was kind of fun to check out something that is very different from novelas but has many of the same actors. Unlike in this country actors who work in novelas often work in movies, other shows and live theater. There doesn't seem to be the snotty attitude found in this country to people who work on the small scene as opposed to the big one. Which also may explain why so many actors have a huge body of work.

Yea NinaK! You are now tilde competent...isn't it fun!? I printed out the numbers that I had to use on my computer and just scotch taped it to the bottom...that way I'm good to go.

Oh, now I see I had the spelling wrong--tilde instead of tilda. Thanks, JudyB!

Howdy =)

El Pantera is a series based on a pulp comic book (in the spirit of Hellboy, The 300, Sin City). As such, it has adapted their film style/look as well. It airs on Sundays at 10:00 EST at the moment. I think it also has an encore the following Saturday at midnight, but I can't remember if that's the actual time.

Telenovelas follow many styles, can be about topics from romance novels to historical characters, and can vary from shoestring budgets to some really expensive ones. Up until the last few years, most Mexican movies were shot with very small budgets and not the greatest of quality. Telenovelas OTOH, have flourished and gotten longer, have gotten larger budgets, and have gotten transmitted into more countries and in some cases, older telenovelas have been re-broadcast. In addition to being shown in the morning, like American soaps, they also air on prime time, and some times on the weekends. This is why Telenovela actors are respected as serious actors and can easily cross over to film or theatre. This is also why so few (Fernando Allende, Salma Hayek, Thalia) ever see the need to move to the American movie scene.

Take care,
M
