Guapos Friday 4/4/08

This was a rather lackluster filler episode. For the second day in a row, we have no Regina and no Connie. It shows how much those two add to the story.

Review of the campout finale: Mili sings, Pilar eats a marshmallow, Alex gazes longingly at Mili while Hugo paws her.

Damien and Karla seem to discuss marriage. He puts the kibosh on the idea, e.g., I'll marry you when hell freezes over.

Gloria tells Mili to stop the wedding--she still loves Alex. Mili does the equivalent of the four-year-old with hands over her ears saying "I can't hear you, I can't hear you."

Hugo paws the painting of Mili. He reminisces over his loving encounters with our little spitfire and vows "you will love me, Mili."

Braulio and Luci plot some more about how they are going to take over from Connie.

Hugo and Mili meet in her bedroom. Then he leaves and she finds a box and a card. I could not believe it, but the card is a picture of Alex with a noose around his neck and a note saying "don't marry Hugo, I can't live without you." Mili sees a reflection of Alex.

Horacio and Socorro talk about the past. She was ashamed. He reassures her.

Karla fills Andrea in. Milii loves Alex, but Alex was in bed with Pilar. Andrea says he's a womanizer, always will be. Karla tells her about the campout. Andrea wants to know why Karla didn't go--she's supposed to be Andrea's eyes and ears. She tells Karla she could do better than Damien--she should go after Hugo. The son is always better than the father, if you have a choice. The phone rings.

Mili looks at her wedding dress with the designer: call for the Pepto Bismol, as she looks queasy again. She says she likes the dress but doesn't want to get married.

Karla sees that man in the yard. He asks for Amparo, and she says there's no Amparo there. As I later figure out, Amparo is Socorro?

Soco talks to Mili. Don't worry--you just have prewedding jitters, all brides do. Really? asks Mili, as if this might ease her mind. Bad advice, Soco.

Karla tells Horacio about the man asking for Amparo.

Designer tells Hugo Mili is nervous. Soco tells Mili that by her second wedding she won't be nervous, ha ha.

Padre M comes in. Gloria invites him up to watch Mili try on her dress--the groom can't see her before the wedding, but no problem with the Padre!

Horacio talks to that guy about Amparo. I don't bother following the details.

Luci now plots with Andrea. Andrea is surprised to hear from her. I can't keep up with Luci's revolving-door attempts to use Andrea or plot against her. This week she will use her.

Mili tries on the dress. Alex comes in and asks the Padre to marry them now! Mili says no, her novio awaits. She cries after everyone leaves.

More plotting between Andrea and Luci. I'm still not clear totally on what they plan, because each is hiding something from the other. Anyway, Luci is going to come to the office and take over. I suppose the fact that Damien holds shares helps Luci?

There's more about Amparo and the old man, but I'm not paying attention.

Karla gets dressed in street clothes to go out.

Chalupa (I mean Chamuco) brings flowers to Gloria and they have a Seinfeldian conversation about nothing. Morgan gallops up. I note that Gloria, Lina, and Chamuco all speak with a strange intonation. All their sentences end on an up note like Valley Girls. Is this a local dialect of sorts, or a class thing? Or is it just bad direction?

Padre talks to "Miligol." She says she loves it when he calls her Miligol. She says today she is not only Mili--she is sad and crazy.

Alex is at his laptop thrashing things around. He reminisces.

Mili is back in her uniform. Padre say she is the most beautiful bride in the world, but also the saddest. He says she can cheat everyone but not her heart.

Luci catches Karla in the lobby. She makes Karla her new personal assistant. Karla is exultant. They leave for the office.

Horacio and Socorro discuss that guy again. Horacio says that the man said he was Amparo's/Socorro's husband.

Hugo is in his room. Alex comes in to talk. He's going on a trip and he won't be at the wedding.

Gloria tells Mili that if she marries the guapo, she will be happy. Mili says--let's all hear it now--Al Diablo con los Guapos.

Alex confides in Uncle Damien again. He didn't care about the businessman prize--he's just hurt at what his father did.

Luci dictates to Karla her choices for new decor for Connie's office.

Horacio and Soco go to that guy's house. As he opens the door, she runs away. He asks, Where's Amparo.

Andrea tells Damien that she doesn't think this craziness of Luc will last long. Damien won't tolerate it.

Luci sits at the big desk and takes a call from Connie. What is she doing there and why did Karla answer the phone. She lies and tries to cover up. Then she says "let's celebrate." Luci's first moment as a big executive is pretty humiliating, as she tries punching every button to use the intercom, but can't get it to work. She ends up yelling for Karla.

Alex calls Pilar. She comes in. He asks her to go on a trip with him. Sure, whatever you want, honey.

Andrea presents Luci with some documents that if shown to the police would put Damien and Connie in prison. It must have to do with that old blackmail situation that we still don't know enough about.

Hugo calls Mili. Gloria tells him she's not there. Mili is hiding behind a pillar. I wish Mili would go to Acapulco like Lety.

Hugo says he'll die without Mili.

Avances: A last try to Alex to stop Mili's wedding. He seems to swallow a key. More scenes about the wedding without any continuity. Luci dresses in black.

Yes, this was another frustrating, no humor, back and forth I love you/I don't love you episode with a little sinister sidetrip thrown in about Socorro's sad past.
Braulio suggested Luci was bright enough to take part in the business but she seems more interested in using a decorator than using her head. Supposedly her knowledge of Constancio's skullduggery will put the kibosh on Consti's bullying but I rather doubt it. He can always threaten her back with revealing Alejandro's true parentage. Stalemate.
And yeah...things are getting stale. Time for a little sensational drama, writers.

Hello to all =)

Bit of useless, but funny trivia: The names Socorro and Amparo both mean "help." Thus, when Soco passed out a few days ago, Braulio and Horacio both screamed "Socorro" to the person, then "socorro" to the population in general asking for help. It is one of the two most common words used when screaming for help (the other being "auxilio") and when speaking of help given. "Amparo" usually deals more with help in the form of comfort, amnesty, or guidance. One of the many pun jokes is "what is the name of a lawyer's wife? Amparo." Anywhoo, I just thought it was funny that Soco's parents had such a bizarre sense of humor as to give their child those two names (Socorro was her middle name, so she used it when she took her new life).

Back to the story of Amparo Socorro Rodriguez: Creepy guy wasn't her husband. Rather, Horacio said HE was her husband to the guy so he wouldn't question Horacio's interfering in the matter. Creepy guy (I think they said his name, but I forget) killed for Soco (probably the guy that raped her) and that's why he was in prison. He says he doesn't want to "bother" her, but only wants money to go back to his town 'cause he's too old for his old life. At the end of the episode, Horacio asks him how much he wants to disappear. Jury's still out as to whether the guy will ask for a really large amount (thus setting up for a goofy fund raiser of some sort) and truly leave, or whether he will try to blackmail them on a regular basis.

Re Luci's office time: Luci got Andrea to give her some dirt on Connie about a deal from a few years ago (as opposed to the recent bribery thing that Peralta knows about) where they used shotty materials. If the info got to the authorities, Connie and Damien could end up in jail for a good long time as negligent. In exchange, Luci promised Andrea that she would be supportive if Alex ever took her back. Luci figured there was no risk in that ever happening anyway. Damien told Karla he wants her out of there, but Karla tells him he better be supportive of her and his sister or she'll tell Connie he's the one that got Val kidnapped. Alex tries to talk Luci out of it because he fears whatever retaliation Connie will give Luci. Nevertheless, he's not going to stick around to find out, he's gotta pack. Dunno whether Luci will have any luck in her blackmail scheme. I wonder if Braulio set her up for exactly that: having her piss off Connie so he'll stick her in an asylum. Whether by hurting Connie or getting Luci sent away, he wins.

Hugo tells Al that he took a job in Monterrey, so he doesn't need to move 'cause Mili won't be around anymore. Guess, Al wants more distance, and a warm body, to help him in his quest to forget Mili. That boy has a long way to go. I don't think Hugo has told Mili about the move though.

Gloria tries to get Hugo to call off the wedding because Mili doesn't love him, but he makes it clear that he'll kill himself if Mili doesn't marry him. The boy is absolutely certifiable.

I also wonder why Connie and Regina are not in this one. I'm guessing something happened to Cesar Evora as he's leaving for two weeks (in the plot) meaning he won't be around for the big wedding episode. That doesn't explain Regina's absence though.

I'm guessing tomorrow we will see the kidnapping mentioned in the synopsis (how they'll get out of the room after Alex swallowed the key remains to be seen). Wonder how many more botched weddings we will get. Also wonder whether Hugo will truly try to kill himself afterwards, and for how long Mili will be kidnapped. Inquiring chismosas like myself want to know.

Oh, regarding the sing-songy rhythm of the help: that is the speech pattern of the poor/uneducated/street people. Chamuco does seem to exaggerate it though.

Thanks so much for filling in all that stuff, Margarita. You are a fount of information. First, I skipped right over that stuff about Socorro, and as for some of the other plotting, I keep glazing over as well.

I love the info about the slang, puns, and street talk. As a lawyer, I will even laugh at the lawyer joke.

My guess is there will be several stopped weddings and maybe a few that go through before we see the end of this with Al and Mili happy together.

Braulio has convinced Luci that she can stick it to Connie by taking an active part in the business. She does have 20 percent of the shares. Obviously Damian doesn't like it because he won't want her to know what a sleaze he really is plus which I think he is one of those guys who think women only are good for one thing and it isn't running a business. Shades of LFMB and office redecorating. Let's hope there are no sea shells scattered around.

I'm hoping Socorro's ghost from the past takes some money, tells her what he want to talk to her about and goes away.

As for Connie, perhaps Cesar took time off during this show to do another part in the much shorter ASM (the tribute novela that ran only three weeks and where he had a big part). I do miss him and Regina and those scenes with Mili that really drive this novela.

Al is now the King of Moronic Galans. Not only does he constantly tell Mili he loves only her but gets caught in bed with skank after skank. He has now decided to leave Mexico he stupidly asks Pilar to bring her snouty self along thereby encouraging a character who shows all of the ear marks of being another psycho like Hugo.

That photo is in the box was creepy. For a moment I thought Hugo had done it as some kind of warning to Mili. It would be something he would do.

What kind of job could Hugo have secured? Painter of tacky nudes? Another inexplicable plot point.

Decie, you might be right about Connie taking time off form ASM as it was aired in '07 in Mexico and this batch of Guapos episodes was probably aired in December.

Nina, I have two guesses about Hugo's new job:
1) Graphic artist - he could design anything from greeting cards to towels, etc.
2) There is no job and he just made up the excuse to get Mili out of town. He'll probably spend the time he's supposed to be at work in some new disguise stalking Mili.

Does anybody remember what the box Al left for Mili was? I think it was a jewelry box 'cause I saw the tell-tale mirror reflection, but there was no music or ballerina dancing, so who knows.

NinaK and all, I don't watch Guapos much, and haven't been on the blog at all much of the last week due to lots of things, but this is one of the most diverting recaps I've ever read. Thanks, tonight I needed the diversion more than I think I ever have needed it.

"I note that Gloria, Lina, and Chamuco all speak with a strange intonation. All their sentences end on an up note like Valley Girls. Is this a local dialect of sorts, or a class thing? Or is it just bad direction?" Well, maybe they've all visited Hawaii or Canada recently. Locals in both places end their thoughts with question marks every time they talk.

It seemed that the prison guy let Horacio know that he wanted money, but when Horacio talked Socorro into going to see him, Horacio said the guy didn’t want money - I’m wondering why he said that. Of course, then he offers to pay himself… I’m wondering if the guy is off probation – here he is pulling a gun on Horacio. Whoa – ex-con in possession of a firearm!
I liked how he did his part, with a cozy smile and a wink while being so threatening.

Poor Luci, trying to show she’s a businesswoman and all she comes up with is decorating. Nobody is going to take her seriously.

I noticed that upnote at the end of sentences when the fellow who is now playing Horacio played the cabdriver husband in LFMB.

Margarita – wow! Good thinking! It had never occurred to me that Braulio might be setting Luci up. And thank you for all the details on the conversations between characters – I had missed a lot of it and am grateful.

For me what makes this show wonderful despite its wild plotting is the outstanding performances. Friday’s episode had a terrific scene with the padre and Mili when she was in her wedding gown – I thought it was very touching. The fellow playing the padre is doing a great job with his part.
