Guapos: Monday 4/14/08: "The one where I'm too doped up to come up with a title"

I'm sorry to say this episode was watched under the influence of cold medicine, so therefore many details are lacking. Please fill in the blanks.

Andrea flashes her cleavage in front of Constancio & mentions they should spend the night together ---not at her apartment (where Hugo is hidden), rather in a hotel. This distracts him enough that he signs a stack of papers without reading the documents. Included in the stack-- the blank documents that Damien, knowing that Andrea had diddled around with Perlata, blackmailed her into getting signed. So at this point, I think that if Connie is stupid enough to be distracted by a pair, he deserves whatever Damien has in store for him.

Horacio mopes around the garden, thinking about Karla’s threat to never see her mother again if Socoritto marries Horacio.

Karla gets another payment from Luciana---she promises to keep her mouth shut and Luci tells her former maid/secretary that this will be the last payment.

Mili and Gloria are working the streets---no not in that way---Gloria throws eggs at windshields and Mili cleans them for a price. They are working it in Andrea’s neighborhood, apparently Mili hopes to run into Hugo again.

We get a montage of Hugo sketching Mili, Mili and Gloria working their scheme, and Karla shopping.

Damien meets some man and it appears he passes off the documents signed by Constancio. He gets a briefcase full of money in exchange and mutters that his brother-in-law is a gold mine. He later returns to the office and gives Andrea a stack of bills---they are partners. She accepts the money, but refuses to give him the kiss he wants.

Horacio tells Socoritto that he’s realized he made a mistake and he should have never asked her to marry him. He gives her the it isn’t you, it’s me speech. She slaps him and later has a good cry in her room where she laments that she should have known not to trust him and that she’ll always be alone.

Damien meets some old college friend for afternoon drinks…..have to admit I missed the point of this bit.

Hugo goes out and the cab he’s in falls victim to Mili and Gloria’s egg and wash scam. Mili sees it is Hugo in the back seat and freezes. Hugo realizes her face is the one he drew. He orders the cab to turn around and go back, but by then Mili is gone.

Rocky is reading Don Juan and discusses the book with Horacio. I guess as a distraction to his own sorry love life, Horacio decides to mess in Rocky’s affairs. He suggests to the chauffer that he should pretend to have multiple personalities: Rocky and Don Juan, in order to woo Valeria.

Karla returns home to an empty apartment. She spots Hugo’s sketch of Mili and she’s ticked off.

Horacio tells Val that he’s concerned for Rocky---he’s developed another persona. Rocky comes in dressed up in costume and we are treated to comic relief as he stumbles around. He makes a move on Val—quoting the book I assume. He goes in for a kiss and she runs off. He later admits to Horacio that he really looooves Valeria---she overhears this confession.

Damien offers Al’s little buddy, Gamusa, some money. He’s up to no good for sure, but I haven’t figured out how getting involved in Al and Regina’s charity work is going to help him, but we all know it isn't because he is secretly wanting to help the poor folks of the DF.

Karla chews Hugo out for leaving the apartment. She questions him about the drawing and he admits that he saw the same face on some girl when he was out. This worries Karla.

Regina fills Mili in on Al’s good deeds. Later, Regina talks to Al and says she’s proud of him and behind him 100 percent. They talk about Connie and Al questions why his father seems to hate him so much.

Mili wishes Al luck with the award ceremony, which will be held that evening. He asks Mili to go with him and she turns him down, she’s too preoccupied with her worry over Hugo. Al wants to know why she’s worried---it is guilt, is she seeking a pardon from Hugo or does she want to get back together with Hugo, so they can be married. Mili says she doesn’t know and she runs off.

Regina scolds Connie for his treatment of Al. Connie tries to defend his behavior and ends up calling Al a bastard. Regina smacks him and tells him to never call Al that again. She orders her son to be nice, and makes it clear that in this battle she will always be on Al’s side.

Rocky, as Don Juan, makes another move on Val. He shoots and he scores……they kiss.

Some woman (I’ve seen her before, but can’t place her---not from this show but on another novela) comes to see Padre Manuel. She wants his help in finding her daughter whom she left on the church altar many years before when the child was a baby.

The Belmonte family watches the award ceremony. Al wins, but isn’t there to accept the award. He’s at home and comes into the room shortly after it is announced he won. Everyone offers him congratulations, even Connie (who apparently hasn't gone out to meet Andrea for their hotel romp).

Rocky tells Horacio he’s bothered by the kiss, because Val was kissing Don Juan, not Rocky. Horacio is confused and Rocky tries to explain that Val isn’t Dona Ines (whatever that means, I know my lack of a literary background makes me deficient in this area----I never read the Don Juan book, I did however see Don Juan Demarco with Johnny Depp, not that they compare, but any movie with Johnny Depp is worth mentioning).

Al seeks out Mili. She is surprised he didn’t go to receive the award in person. He tells her that awards only feed vanity and ego (yep, tell Hollywood that ---People's Choice anyone?). They flirt and tease each other. He goes in for a kiss. END OF EPISODE

Great recap--no need to apologize.

I recognized the mystery woman too--isn't it "Tia" from Amar, as in tia-loving-abuelo killer?

I was quite disappointed again in the girls' petty criminal money making attempts. Even in the worst days' of New York's financial crisis, when we were plagued with so-called squeegee men, they did not dirty the windshield to drum up more business. They would just hang out near crowded intersections and hope to shame people into giving money. They could usually be waved off.

Vocabulary question: I think Andrea and Connie were talking about her giving him an "adelante," which seemed to be a kiss in preview of their later adventure. Is this a slang that anyone knows about?

"Adelante" means an advance...like an advance payment. I thought it was a way to ask for some "slap and tickle" as the British say before their night in the hotel.
And yes, no need to apologize...the recap was funny and complete. I loved those little one-lipped kisses at the end between Alejandro and Mili.
I assumed Doña Ines was one of Don Juan's many conquests. I saw the opera waaaaay back in '63 when Santa Fe's opera house was in the open, under the stars. Hearing Mozart's Don Giovanni, out in the desert, with a midnight black sky and HUGE stars gleaming overhead was awesome...but alas, I don't remember the names of his wife or his other conquests.

Cathy: Thanks for the excellent recap.

I'm getting into this novela at last. I was just about ready to give up on it. I know that a lot will happen - or has to happen - because it is so long.

Anyway, Mili becomes more becoming as time goes by.

As to Constancio's request for an "adelante" - I thought he was asking for a preview or a sample, and I don't think he met a kiss or a touch.

Hello dears =)

Cathy et al, Re-Damian meeting his buddy for lunch: Damian questions Al about all the materials he's ordered without a client name listed. Al informs him about the stuff he's building in the barrio and tells him not to worry his pretty little head 'cause he and Regi will pay for it. He then suggests that Damien and Connie should consider getting into charity work as it's very rewarding. Damian then meets with college buddy who's wife runs a charitable foundation. Damian says he can get Connie to make a nice donation, which surprises the friend 'cause Connie's never been a philanthropist - at all! Damian says to leave it to him and the friend says fine, as long as I get my cut. I'm guessing Damian will use the signed blank paper, and if caught will tell Connie he did it for his political image. On that same line, the guy who gave Damian the suitcase of cash was making a "contribution" to Connie's campaign in exchange for an affidavit saying Connie would approve some deals for him if elected. I guess this is the "under the table" version of lobbying. Since the numbers are not written anywhere, Damian can take his cut without any record showing.

Re: "Adelanto" - an adelanto is a down payment, or an advance (in salaries, payments, and such).

Re: "Don Juan" - There are a ton of different versions of the Don Juan story (including Mozart's Don Giovanni), but in México, they tend to refer to the play "Don Juan Tenorio" by Jose Zorrilla. Anywhoo, DJ Tenorio makes a bet with a friend on who can seduce more women and kill more men, with DJ winning. The father of Juan's bethroted, Ines, find out about the lad's evil ways and the engagement is dissolved with Ines being sent to a convent. Juan was in no rush to get married anyway, but he still wants to bed Ines. He does manage to seduce her, with help from the nun who cares for her. He also kills her dad. Anywhoo, he runs away, but he realizes he's actually fallen in love. Ines also falls in love, and it is her love that saves him from damnation after he dies. This particular play is a "Day of the Dead" standard in México and often plays through late October and early November.

The "upcoming episodes" show Mili telling Al that she thinks Hugo's at Andrea's place and Al actually finding him there.

I'm actually surprised that the queen of costume dramas with Colunga (Carla Estrada) hasn't decided to do her version of Don Juan Tenorio. She can use all the left over costumes from Pasion and Alborada plus the usual cast of characters - ho hum. I digress

Yep Damian is out making promises in Connie's name and raking in the bucks. I wonder how long it will be before he gambles them all away. Didn't the previews also show Bobby somehow getting involved with the money (sure to be the fall guy when the poop hits the fan).

Regina really lit into Connie and that slap sure surprised him. I'm beginning to see that Mili may indeed not only have Regina's character but also her spirit.

I'm wondering if the mystery woman will turn out to be Gloria's mom. I am also a tad confused with the Padre always mentioning that he wasn't at the orphanage when all these little girls were abandoned or had their mother die giving birth. I also wonder if this woman is a set up to have us believe that Connie and Rosario are not Mili's parents which of course we know they are.

Not to raise an issue here but after Al asked Mili to go to the ceremony where did he go since he didn't go to pick up his prize. He just suddenly appeared in the TV room (who would have thought the Belmontes had one) Was he hiding in his room all the time LOL.

You got all the highlights, Cathy – great job despite the cold meds! What a trooper!

I thought the Socorro scene was sad. She’s such a sympathetic character.

And here was Vale, ready to accept romance if it came in the right package and spouted poetic language. Kinda reminded me of Roxanne in Cyrano.

Thank you too Margarita for your contributions. Your erudition is always impressive!

Howdy =)

I too wondered what Al was up to. I don't remember seeing a TV in his room, but he might have one in a cabinet somewhere. Maybe he was planning his new strategy on how to get Mili back.

PM was said to have arrived at the convent 16 years ago. That was after Mili and Gloria arrived. I also think this is supposed to be Gloria's mom. They might have another confusion sequence about who's her little girl, but I doubt it will last longer than one episode (much like Horacio's confusion about Lina or Mili being his daughter) since Mili knows full well that her mother died, and so does everyone else.

I hope Horacio confides in someone his reasons for breaking up with Soco so they can "accidentally" spill the beans and she won't be so sad. Once Al discovers Hugo (this is what the previews showed, but dunno how long this could take), Karla might get shipped back to the mansion (she has enough on Luci and Damian to get them to bring her back) and may well spill the beans herself.

Two questions:
1) Did anyone else notice that Hugo lost his bandage in about a day's time? Did I miss a "days later" graphic somewhere?

2) Does anyone know if there are other places to look for past episodes beside You Tube? I never got to watch episode 37 (the one where Mili is working at the Rodeo in a cat costume) and so far, nobody seems to have put it up on YouTube.

Thanks Maggie, I've never been called an erudite before. I usually just say that I'm a font of useless trivia that knows a little bit of everything and a whole lotta nothing =)

It's also nice that we're learning new vocab in Spanish and in English.

Margarita, thanks for your info about Don Juan Tenorio. That was really interesting. The plot sounds very ripe for the novela factory.

I too hope they cut short whatever mistaken identity they've cooked up with this new mother. I was also suspecting it was Gloria's mother. Remember Lina's mother She certainly got a quick dismissal. Is she never to return?
